Not so long ago, outdoor options centered around “pool furniture” – aluminum and plastic chairs & loungers and glass top tables. Today, the category includes luxe dining and living room furniture that rivals the best offerings for indoor spaces – pool optional. Outdoor living spaces are comfortable and inviting for both quiet relaxing time and for big family gatherings.
TYPES OF OUTDOOR FURNITURE. Enhancing outdoor living space is the best way to add seating for meals and entertaining. The size of your space and your intended use will set the stage for the type of furniture you want on the patio. Design one main space or multiple vignette-type spaces. • Dining. How many would you like to seat? Does the space dictate a round, oblong, or square table? What dimensions work after allowing 3 feet around the table for dining chair movement? Do you prefer table height, counter height, or bar height seating? • Deep Seating. Here’s the ahhh in the drama of backyard living. Sofas and chairs with big, comfy deep cushions in fabric choices as varied as you can imagine. Choose neutral fabrics or bright colors or patterns to achieve the design aesthetic you want. Measure the space and decide on how to best fit sofas, loveseats, gliders, swivel rockers – even recliners! Add end tables and a coffee table and voila! your outdoor space is now as inviting as the rest of your home. • Chat & Firepit. The options are endless for gathering around a firepit. Group 2 or 4 Adirondack chairs or deep seating swivel rockers around a square or round firepit OR enjoy a gas firepit built into your dining or coffee table. Creating a separate space for the firepit, away from the main patio, is an excellent way to add seating for intimate events or big gatherings. • Chase & Other Furniture. Add chaise lounges by the pool (or IN the pool) and other furniture pieces to enhance your space. Chill out in a hammock or add a rolling cast aluminum bar cart to up your entertaining game.
FINISHING TOUCHES. The finishing touches are what perfects the design of your outdoor living space, just as accessories complete your interior design.. • Lighting. Look up. Got lights? Proper lighting sets the tone of your space. • Rugs. Look down. A perfectly sized rug sets the stage in outdoor spaces the same as indoors. • Décor. Look around. Add a patio umbrella to seating areas not under cover for shade and a pop of color. Personalize your patio with plants, décor, and a little bit of whimsy (and very likely a big TV for following your favorite team!)
