At last, we have completed another year and the seventh issue of Remarque. Behind the production of these pages is a group of students that have come together, at first as unfamiliar classmates, but now as a strong unit. This year, we have a special group of students that have joined together to make this publication happen. With only one member from the last issue’s team joining us this year, we have all grown together as we learned what it takes to work as a team, to communicate effectively, and most of all, to have fun and enjoy working with a group as diverse as we are to make this publication possible. In the Remarque ‘19 collection, there are numerous breathtaking photographs, crisp graphic design, captivating films, video and multimedia, and impressive works from architecture that we have the pleasure to present. I’m proud to say I’m a part of a school where I walk among such dedicated, talented and creative students. Across the varying disciplines is an opportunity to appreciate the result of each person’s journey through the creative process. This publication serves as a celebration for these student’s hard work and dedication to their creative discipline. I hope that this issue will be inspirational and appreciated. Of 200 entries, we’ve selected 82 to share with you. These students have worked hard and to have their work juried, acknowledged and seen is a nice reward. Enjoy and thank you for your interest in Remarque. Danisha Cothiere President

GUEST LECTURER & JUROR

The Remarque student group hosted visiting designer Carlos Pérez, Designer, Creative Director and Video Director at Elastic People on Tuesday, April 16, 2019 at the FAU Davie Campus. Carlos inspired the audience with stories and lessons from his design career and work in the music industry—including his directorial work for Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s record breaking “Despacito” video. He also serves as the special juror for this issue of Remarque. Carlos Pérez, Founder and Creative Director of Elastic People, was named as One of the Top 100 Most Influential Latinos in the U.S. by Hispanic Business. Carlos has spent the past 15 years transforming brands. A Grammy winner and multi-disciplinary Creative Director, Carlos weaves Film, Branding and Design into integrated campaigns for clients including Interscope Records, Atlantic Records, Nike Lab, Reebok, Pepsi and the NBA to name a few. A unique sensibility for Latin cultures in the U.S. forms the foundation of Carlos’ vision. Born in San Juan and raised in Miami, Carlos began his career in Los Angeles and has traveled extensively around the world. cargocollective.com/elasticpeople

RECYCLE RUNWAY

The Remarque student group participated in the first Recycle Runway on April 6, 2019 at the FAU MetroLab in Fort Lauderdale. The event brought together students from four South Florida college programs to celebrate the power of Design. The students were challenged to create unique garments inspired by design and constructed from a range of recycled materials including chip bags, CDs, garbage bags, and soda can tabs. Each of these garments were modeled in a one-night runway exhibition.

We first started with googling themes and what art related movement we could do or get ideas from. Then, we just started doodling outfits and trying to figure out things that would stand out and what materials we needed… We collected a ton of chip bags throughout the process. —Kaylyn Koutz, Staff We were able to experiment with many materials & different mediums in creating something unique and stylish. It was fun and challenging, but I had a great team of people who put together their artistic talents, styles and aesthetics to create a dress. We used materials such as cardboard, garbage bags and chip bags to create a functional dress for model to wear. Many hours on campus (past 2 a.m.) were spent to design, create and assemble the dress and it was worth it! —Danielle Wall, Treasurer

INTERVIEWS In Professor Yulia Tikhonova’s Spring 2019 History of Graphic Design course, students were given an assignment to reach out to industry professionals to conduct interviews. Featured here are questions and answers from some of the more insightful interviews. Bryan Singer Designer, Artist AIGA San Francisco 2019 Fellow Award Winner www.someguy.is Interview by Dickson Luna Once you graduated, what were your expectations versus reality? What was your first field based job? And what advice can you offer a young designer like myself for life after college? Fortunately, I’d had two internships before graduating, so I’d seen a bit of what the “real world” was like. Both internships were at companies that did a lot of corporate identity and annual reports (which, back in the day, were kind of a big thing for designers…today, they’re non-existent). My first job was at a design firm in their “multimedia” department, working on interactive projects and web sites (keep in mind, this is 1996, so CD-ROMs are still a thing, and the web is just staring to gain traction). As for expectations versus reality…I think in school, there’s a lot of focus on the designer being the center of the solution…and in reality, the designer is just one small component of any given project. So, my advice to young designers is to learn how to work well with others. It sounds trivial, but soft skills will take you further in your career than a kick-ass portfolio (though, that also helps). Ken Hirsch Architect, AIA Member www.kenhirscharchitect.com Interview by Paulino Andrade Which did you prefer, designing buildings and houses in California, or here in Florida? My Florida architectural career started 1976. The Southern California design work was influenced by the architecture of the area. Architectural design in South Florida in the last quarter of the 20th century was an ideal place to experiment with the Southern California styles and grow my practice. The market place was thirsty for new trends and were embraced by the public and developers.

Lawrence Chappe Graphic Designer, Creative Director, CEO of Chappe Inc. www.laurencechappe.com Interview by Melanie Castro When you start designing a product, do you think or try to implant any of the following concepts: sustainability, diversity, inclusion, equity, social justice, citizenship, and/or design education? If so, which of these do you keep in mind or which do you feel intentionally come off in your work and why? The first thing I think about when designing a product is the costumer followed by how can said product be different from all or most of its competitors. School teaches you to shove these other concepts on people, but the fact of the matter is that if the consumer of that product does not care about say social justice or sustainability, then the product will not sell and the design will be a failure. I’m not saying there’s no room for these concepts, in fact, a lot of companies will run marketing campaigns based on sustainability and inclusivity, but that’s because those companies are trying to appeal to people who believe those are important things. What I’m trying to say is, first you must define who will even buy this product, then you must study them and their behaviors and then act on that…never shove your opinion or beliefs on people, that recipe for failure on many many levels. Angelo Kurbanali Graphic Designer, AIGA Member www.angelokurbanali.com Interview by Ilan Tesone Do you have particular influences from the art world who you style yourself after, or even just look to for inspiration? In terms of my style, I don’t think I style myself after anyone in particular. I try to do what I think looks good or what best suits the objective of the design. However, I can definitely point to influences in my life that inspire me. I’ve always been the type that loves anime and video games, JRPGs especially, so there’s that. A lot of my inspiration comes from nature as well. And music. I try to design what I feel when I listen to certain songs. My religion inspires me as well.
