Editor’s Note Since its print debut in 2012, Remarque has been a Broward-based student-led effort for FAU students to showcase not only their creative talents but their passion, vision, and voice through the following creative disciplines: Graphic Design; Film, Video & New Media; Architecture; and Studio Art. It is my honor and privilege to serve as Editor-in-Chief of this issue of Remarque. I would like to recognize our creative staff of dedicated student volunteers, and thank our outstanding professors whose guidance has proven invaluable. Also, special thanks are extended to FAU’s Broward Campus Administration for providing the funding to make our publication possible. The Remarque team and Designers’ Edge group are grateful for the participation of Graphic Design guest jurors, Shane Crawford & Ross Clodfelter from Device Creative Collaborative, who took the time in March to visit us from Winston-Salem to inspire us with their creative journey and achievements. The 2015 issue of Remarque culminated in over 300 entries and 111 selected pieces from 45 FAU students. Each piece is distinct, original, and unique. We are proud to display the works of FAU’s aspiring creatives who are determined to leave their mark on the FAU community and beyond. I strongly urge every student to continue their pursuit of excellence in all personal and professional endeavors. Find inspiration, embrace curiosity and creativity and be encouraged by all the wonderful opportunities that FAU continues to offer! Leah Silochan Editor-in-Chief

Chance Stillman Mediatheque Vessel 2015 Armando Luna Fort Lauderdale Media Center Rhino, Lumion, Photoshop, 2014 When it comes to the concept of knowledge, there are two types of people, the readers and the writers. One who creates/ teaches, and one who observes/ learns. Designing a building that can inhabit both parties called for two kinds of circulation paths, one of which spirals around the central focal point of the building. This spiral is then subtracted from the mass resulting in a carved architecture.

FACULTY Interviews Camila Afanador-Llach Graphic Design

Anthony Abbate Architecture

What artist/designer inspires you within your field?

What artist/designer inspires you within your field?

I’m inspired by many artists and designers! I like to learn from their work to better understand the practice of graphic design today and imagine its future. Some classic names that come to mind are Josef Müller-Brockmann, Ladislav Sutnar and Jan Van Toorn. Among conceptual artists I’m drawn to Sol LeWitt’s instruction-based art and it’s relationship to contemporary art and design. I’m also inspired by creative uses of computer programming in the work of Joshua Davis, Rafael Rozendaal and Nicholas Feltron.

I have been inspired by many architects over the years, as a student and young practitioner LeCorbusier and Louis Kahn were influences, and after that Massimo Vignelli, who taught a summer course at Harvard that I attended. It was there that he explained “the language of design” that inspired me to think of design well beyond the scale of architecture.

What would you be doing if you were not teaching? I would probably be working in a design studio. Ideally, a multidisciplinary office fostering collaboration between graphic designers, editors, photographers, architects, developers, writers, historians, etc.

Jeffrey Larson Photography What artist/designer inspires you within your field? The artists that have inspired are constantly changing as I get older and hopefully wiser but Robert Mapplethorpe and Nan Goldin’s use of what they were familiar with in the everyday along with Diane Arbus’ protraits of people on the fringes of society constantly inspire me to look within my self and question the everyday of society and to put that into my art. Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring’s early work on the streets of New York use the idea of making art accessible to everyone is thought provoking as not to use art as a commodity has a naivety that challenges me. While contemporary artists such as Elinor Carucci and Jen Davis use of intimate moments captured in their everyday life has a beauty that I strive to achieve in my photography. Felix Gonzalez-Torres conceptual use of time passing in his interactive pieces is fascinating even twenty years after his death from AIDS. And finally, my students inspire me—I know sounds kind of corny—but working closely and challenging students on assignments and projects makes me push myself as I push them to step outside their box of comfort.

What has been the best moment of your professional experience so far? As an instructor, it is when a long forgotten student sends me an email showing me her work in an exhibit she was accepted into or when a non-art major tells me that he is making a living at photography. As an artist, when John Foster, a professor of ceramics and mentor recently introduced me as a ‘working artist.’ Very simple words but the idea that I am working as an artist in today’s world and making a living (merger as it is) it is something that I am proud of at this moment.

52

REMARQUE

What has been the best moment of your professional experience so far? The best moments of my professional career occur when I meet with former students who are successful as architects, and when clients call me after they move in and live in my designs to say “thank you!”

What would you be doing now if you were not teaching? In addition to teaching I administer the Broward Campuses—and if I were not doing either of those I would probably return to sketching, painting, and woodcutting and pick up where I left off 30 years ago!

Brad Lewter Animation What has been the best moment of your professional experience so far? If I had to pick one, I would say the few days I pulled all-nighters for the students in the labs so the Computer Graphics Club could finish its entry for a modeling contest at the EvolveCG conference. The frames were taking WAY too long to render (over 10 minutes per frame if I remember correctly) so we had every machine in two labs batching out these frames, and it still took a few days. They ended up getting second place, but it was still a huge victory for the club and a great experience all around.

What would you be doing if you were not teaching? I’d probably be rocking slowly on the front porch of a cabin I built with my own hands, playing a banjo as my wife and kids played out in the garden. Realistically, I’d probably be working as a 3D generalist in a small studio or agency. With remote work these days, maybe I could have both. I think I would prefer teaching, however. I really get something from catalyzing and witnessing artistic development in other people that I can find nowhere else. I find few things more satisfying than having a former student contact me from out of the blue to thank me for being a good teacher.
