Visit a supermarket and everyone is wearing facemasks and gloves. You can not enter without it. We must stand at a minimum of six feet from each other. Every passageway is a one-way lane to prevent contact or close interaction. Hand sanitizer must be applied as soon as we leave and then again at home. I wish this were the introduction to a horror novel where the reader is dropped off a plane right into the middle of the chaos. It’s not. In 2020, this is the reality of the world we live in. We have been struck with a surprising and predatorial pandemic known as COVID-19 or the Coronavirus. Throughout the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, we’ve used creativity, technology and perseverance to continue reaching for our goals. Students and teachers are no exception. Like the police, nurses, mail people or grocery workers, we continue. We fight through the stress and challenges. Teachers call for attendance based on if they see you online or not. An entire graduating class received their congratulations virtually through a zoom call. These are unusual times. As many creators have come to realize, we just keep creating. Although human interaction is restricted and we are unable to continue innocent daily errands, creativity is not prohibited. This issue came together over video chats and shared drives by a group of exhausted but dedicated students who were determined to make it happen. Regardless of the situation, we made it, we are here. I present to you, Remarque issue #8, known to us as the “The Covid Issue.” We present to you 129 juried works from FAU’s unique crop of students from visual fields including graphic design, architecture, photography, fine art, film and new media. This issue shows how creatives are able to thrive despite obstacles and still achieve something great. Special selections in this issue were juried by renown graphic designer, Aaron Draplin who visited the FAU Davie campus in February when our semester was still “normal”. Thanks Aaron! A shout out to all of the students, faculty, and workers around the world who continue to produce in these challenging times. Last but not least, we’d like to give you a shout out for picking up this magazine and for reading this soliloquy. Enjoy. Dickson Luna President

REMARQUE | 2020

The FAU Remarque student group hosted visiting designer Aaron Draplin on Sunday, February 2, 2020 at the Davie Campus. Draplin inspired the audience with stories and lessons from his design career and work. He graciously agreed to serve as the special juror for this issue of Remarque. Aaron Draplin is a Portland-based graphic designer who is well known for the tight work he has done for Nike, Burton Snowboards, Esquire, Red Wing, Ford Motor Company, and the Obama Administration. His merchandise, including the Field Notes, are almost as popular as his passionate presentations. It took FAU seven years to get on his schedule. It finally happened and he did not disappoint. draplin.com

INFOGRAPHIC

SUBMISSION STATISTICS For the eighth volume of Remarque, the editors switched the standard method of collecting submissions via email, and instead embraced the benefits of the digital realm. All information for the call for entries was published on an easy to understand website. The entry submissions were conducted using Google forms. This approach allowed students to edit their own entries and reduce errors in the editing process. Also, the new method provides the editors with overall statistics from the submissions, allowing members to improve the visual journal’s exclusivity.

COVID-19 STUDENT & FACULTY INTERVIEWS COVID-19 During this unanticipated pandemic, students and professors alike were faced with the challenge of having to continue learning and instructing, but at home, using a laptop or desktop. While challenging, these students and professors were able to strive forward. These interviews provide some insight into what the process was like for them. Interviews conducted by Dickson Luna.

a new and engaging activity to take their minds off the ongoing pandemic. Take a break from the redundancy of news and social media! Instead, read a book. Watch a movie or TV series. Listen to music or a podcast. Bake or cook from scratch. Donate blood. Adopt a cat or dog. Create some new art or write. And most important, keep exercising the brain and body, energizing them daily.

Camila Afandor-Llach MFA, Assistant Professor How has it been as a student/teacher to engage with one another throughout COVID? The experience of engaging with students during the crisis has been a big adjustment to the expectations I would have under normal circumstances. I opened up several channels of communication to be connected with students and was flexible with due dates. Because this was unplanned and rushed there was a lot of trial and error on what methods work better for engaging students remotely. I realized how much I usually rely on sitting next to my students with a pen and paper to discuss their ideas. It seems that with these conversations I am actively helping them think through their projects. That essential interaction was gone with the crisis and was replaced with some individual meetings where I shared my screen. Even though we had some virtual meetings, finishing the semester without our regular in-person class, made me feel that something was missing from the experience.

Tiffany Taylor Student How has COVID impacted your creative process? COVID-19 has made my creative process leap upwards some days and fall downwards on others. There are moments when I am sitting around inspired by an idea ready to dive into my projects and other moments where I have found it hard to find any motivation. Throughout this wild time, I have tried to focus on new ideas and inspiration.

Alexis Rocha Student, Graphic Design How has COVID changed your creative process? COVID-19 has limited the resources I was able to obtain for my school projects but it did not slow down my creativity. During this pandemic I was able to expand my horizon and do more experimentations. Although I still had to make time for my design projects in order to do well in my classes and graduate, I had more free time to do independent studying. I was able to work on my illustration skills that can be incorporated in my graphic design work. I was also able to learn new tools such as Adobe XD and After Effects with the help of webinars and YouTube. Shane Eason MFA, Assistant Professor What have you learned or taken away from this entire COVID-19 experience? Obviously we should remain focused and positive. As quickly as we moved to this alternative lifestyle, the latter will return, and with it, perhaps some new lifestyle choices. Collectively we need to be more inclined to look at the smallest of details first before jumping to any major conclusions. So, I encourage people to try

Mehrdad Baghbani MFA, Assistant Professor What have you learned or taken away from this entire COVID experience? Certainly, the greatest lesson I have learned from it has been a more accurate understanding and interpretation of the word sustainability and how fragile our illusion can be in this sense. Perhaps this was necessary for us to wake up from a long sleep and, by recognizing our abilities and limitations more closely, to create a better future for ourselves and our citizens. Collin Pierce Student How has it been as a student/teacher to engage with one another throughout COVID? With technology growing as fast as it, various platforms have made the learning curve of adopting ways to communicate via online and group chats much easier. It seems to have made the interaction among my classmates more personal as we miss the face to face interaction, yet we all achieve the same attitude of wanting to learn and help each other both through our classes and personal lives. Dogan Arslanoglu MFA How has COVID impacted your creative process? My practice has transitioned to a mostly studio practice. I am revisiting older works and thinking about books and other forms outside of the gallery model. I am looking closely at other artists who have gone on to successfully support themselves outside of the gallery model through places such as Patreon and Twitch.
