Working with your fellow classmates/friends can be difficult, especially when you are in a position of power. You almost feel awkward asking them to get you a coffee, pick up your dry cleaning and bringing you some food, but that’s their job, right? Ah, I am only kidding! Because using some of the most talented designers I know just for coffee runs is an absolute abomination in my opinion. The Remarque 2018 team is a mixture of design students plus one ace professor, and I can honestly say I have never seen a group more committed, supportive and down-right hard working. Each and every one of them contributed and did their best to create something truly amazing and inspirational. This issue contains an incredible mixture of mediums, all bringing something different and unique to each and every page. Seventy-three works were selected from 162 student entries across disciplines. From packaging design to architecture to video, Remarque ’18 truly has something for everyone, and I am proud to say that every single piece has been created by fellow FAU students. Being editor-in-chief is something entirely new to me, yet it is also something I have dreamed about ever since I can remember. I am very appreciative of this opportunity and I am thankful for all the support I received as it was not always easy, but the best things in life are never usually easy and Remarque is definitely not an exception to this. For those of you who made it to this line, thank you for your interest. Please enjoy and I hope you find this issue inspirational, the same way I find the designers inspirational. FACULTY INTERVIEWS Annette Piskel Adjunct Professor, Graphic Design In the field of design, which is better specialization or generalization? There are good arguments for both sides. I tend to believe that when you are first starting out in the design industry, generalization (able to do a lot of things) may make you more employable. Once a designer becomes proficient at one or maybe two things, choosing specialization is quite a valuable tool. People who have a specialized interest and can pair that with an entrepreneurial spirit may be more likely to be self-employed. The self-employed carry a characteristic trait- being willing to take a risk. Whatever you decide to choose it should be based on what is right for you, your goals, and your outlook. Strive for good design with ethics and be happy! What, in your opinion, is your strongest skill? How have you honed it over the years? My strongest skills are my resourcefulness, and that I am a hard worker. I have honed these skills over the years by staying curious with a touch of humor, and embracing the outlook of a life-long learner. What’s the best book you ever read, relating to design? Instead of stating the BEST book I ever read related to design, I will give homage to the first book I ever read related to design. The book is titled, form + communication by Walter Diethelm. It was a required reference book for us newbie student designers. At the time I was eighteen years old and it was the most I had ever paid for a book. But as I look back on it, it was well worth it. It is a collection of material: a way to visualization. My eyes grew big when I first flipped through the pages. It gave me a glimpse of my future vocation. The book supported exciting examples of visual designing and continues to mold and make its mark on me. Today the book is still with me on my studio bookshelf. Marco Bell Adjunct Professor, Photography www.marcobell.com What currently fascinates you? Does it inspire your work? If so, how? For most of my adult life, I’ve been fascinated, to the point of obsession, by topics related to history, national identity, political marketing, economics and culture. My work, primarily photo-based, gravitates toward how we see ourselves and where do we stand in the world.

What types of projects do you enjoy working on most? Although my work has been described as very “cerebral”, the projects I enjoy the most are those in which there’s more space for improvisation, the more intuitive ones. I guess that’s because they throw me back to the years where I discovered the medium, about 15 years ago. Back then I would work on projects with no conceptual ground (really experimenting, extremely fun stuff) and I spent entire days wandering around with my camera and then weeks in the darkroom. What is your motto? Real artists don’t starve. Melanie Uribe Graduate Student, Graphic Design What advice do you have for students? Love the design process; from beginning to end, if you want to do good work, you need to enjoy it. Passion is a big part of creativity. Always keep learning, read books, blogs, listen to podcast and keep practicing. The design world is constantly evolving; it’s essential for graphic designers to be aware of the latest styles and trends to stay a step ahead of the industry. How do you like to tap into your creativity? I step away from technology and take short breaks every couple of hours, sometimes I need that time to clear my mind and restructure my train of thought. I also play music or listen to audio books because it blocks out unnecessary noises and keeps me relaxed and happy, therefore, I focus better. What or who is your current design inspiration? Multidisciplinary designers such as Ebon Heath, Nicole Licht, Pablo Lehmann and Keetra Dean Dixon inspire me. Contemporary designers that experiment with new ways of making images and experiences by mixing techniques, materials and unconventional methods to inspire new ways of thinking.
