Gardening Cart for the Elderly

Thomas O’Connor Fall 09 Senior Studio

01

Design Brief

Design a product to utilize the therapeutic qualities of gardening therapy for the elderly. Gardening therapy is a simple and proven elderly activity which has shown to improve: -physical and mental conditions -the senses -cognitive ability -anxiety for dementia patients -social interaction -quality of life

Alice is small and frail. Doctors say she has dementia and short term memory loss.

But when she touches the soil, old memories come flooding back.

User Research

Storage for multiple items.

I visited a nursing home with an active garden and spoke to residents and caretakers about gardening and its therapeutic qualities. Problems: -managing multiple components (watering can, tools, planters, gloves, etc.) -walking -sitting down -seated to standing transition -standing to kneeling transition

Outdoor and tabletop gardening is a popular individual and group activity.
