Welcome There’s a fresh wave of design startups that are ready to rock the industry and unleash their abundant talent. That’s what our June cover story is all about, featuring the brainchilds of four exciting design startups in the region. A big shout out to the creative heads of Juxtapiece, Urban Nest, The Hub Interiors, and Grand Hills Interiors for their participation and involvement in making this lead story a great read and a visual treat as well. Another feature that got me super excited is our project this month—rustic and very handsome apartment in Cairo by Badie Architects. This project shows a perfect amalgamation of industrial architecture and subdued glamour. Moving on, there’s an honest and must-read opinion piece by Paul McElroy from Kinnersley Kent Design on the importance of creative criticism especially in our field of design and architecture. This month, I have all of a sudden fallen in love with the foosball after seeing the Teckell foosball table. I want to do both—learn the game and buy the table. Dar Al Arkan launches Mirabilia villas with interiors by Roberto Cavalli Dar Al Arkan, real estate developer in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, announced the launch of the SAR600mn Mirabilia upscale residential villas with interiors by Italian fashion house Roberto Cavalli, in the SAR10bn Shams Ar Riyadh Development. The mixed-use development is a selfcontained community that expresses luxury and distinction in each of its components; residential, commercial, educational, medical, recreational, and religious. The brand has been active in the GCC region for over five years, completing many high profile projects in the commercial sector for HSBC, LinkedIn, Shell, and Adidas to a name a few. Andrew has 25 years of experience in the fit-out sector, delivering high specification projects throughout Europe and the GCC region. Boydell brings insight and understanding of the business culture and the unique supplier chain relationships in the Middle East that will strengthen FUTURE Designs success in the market. Initiatives from the Emirates Green Building Council and Estidama in Abu Dubai, coupled with the corporate policy to reduce carbon emissions has led to the increasing adoption of LED solutions in the region. Dubai Properties launches phase 3 at Villanova Dubai Properties announced the launch of a new phase of its highly successful Villanova community in Dubailand. The third phase of Amaranta, the green heart of Villanova, is slated to begin in the fourth quarter of this year with completion scheduled for Q4 2020. The third phase will comprise over 300 spacious three- and four-bedroom townhouses, sporting modern Spanish façades. The aesthetics of each unit will draw inspiration from the elaborate detail found in contemporary Mediterranean architecture. The meticulously designed twostorey houses will feature elegantly finished interiors and bright natural colours that create an ideal setting for a stress-free and relaxed lifestyle. Mandarin Oriental announces a new project in Oman Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group has announced that they will manage a new resort in Muscat, the capital of Oman. The resort will feature 150 guestrooms and suites, five restaurants and bars, a spa at Mandarin Oriental, and an outdoor swimming pool. A variety of banqueting and meeting spaces will accommodate social and business events. The group will also manage 155 residences at Mandarin Oriental, which will feature some of the most select private apartments in the capital ranging from 75 to 260sqm. The property will be located on the beach in a prime city location and the low-rise architectural design will take full advantage of the views of the Arabian sea. The developer is Eagle Hills Muscat,

a private real estate investment and development company. “Muscat is an entrancing destination with character, charm, and an abundance of visitor attractions. We are delighted to have the opportunity to expand our brand presence on the Arabian Peninsula with this exciting project in partnership with Eagle Hills,” said James Riley, group chief executive of Mandarin Oriental. “We look forward to bringing Mandarin Oriental’s legendary service standards to Muscat,” he added. “We are proud to be entering the Omani market, with our first project in the country. NEWSMAKERS With its innovative design, the upcoming business school will set a new educational benchmark in the Kingdom

KE Structures completes Caribbean Sea project KE structures were chosen by Arch. Perna and Arch. Tulumello for a prestigious private villa placed next to Antigua’s marina; Antigua is one of the isles in the Lesser Antilles, in the Caribbean Sea, renowned for its white sand and turquoise sea beaches. KE Structures is a major player in the awnings and pergolas market, with several branches, along with the headquarters located in Noventa di Piave (Venice), Italy. The project comes from the customer’s need of covering four different areas of the residential complex: the entrance, the area standing next to the living room, the terrace of the sleeping area and the mooring. With regard to the living room and sleeping area, five placed-against Gennius Isola 2 were installed, three on the ground floor on the exit of the living area and two on the first floor, next to the sleeping area. Isola 2 was chosen in order to meet the need for a structure in line with the architectural look of the residential complex, which is characterised by a neat and linear style and by soft colours. This is why both the structure and the covering cloth are white. Isola 2 is an aluminium awning structure with retractable packaging, made up of a cloth fixed to a system with crossbar profiles, trolleys and guides; the system allows a horizontal sliding. In the area next to the entrance a Kedry Plus bioclimatic pergola with roof blades was installed, being it lighter and more essential in its design, once again in line with the villa’s style and soft colours. Kedry Plus is an aluminium awning structure with an adjustable-blades roof, made up of a perimetral gutter profile that allows blades rotation and water drainage.

Benoy reveals final design of Global Business School in Jeddah Benoy has revealed new details, renderings, and images of their latest project, the Global Business School (GBS) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The new Global Business School, to operate in collaboration with Imperial College Business School (UK), Harvard Law School (USA), and Cornell University (USA), will open in 2020 and will set a new benchmark in business education within Saudi Arabia, attracting students from the Kingdom as well as internationally. The brief for Benoy, which has in the past delivered award-winning education buildings for the University of Nottingham in the UK was to design a new business school for both male and female in Jeddah, which would reflect the client Shababco’s ethos of promoting the youth and education, supported by gender inclusion and knowledge sharing in a creative environment, encouraging social engagement and innovation. It was Benoy’s creative approach and ability to understand the commercial drivers that were pivotal to Shababco choosing Benoy as a design partner for the state-ofthe-art educational institute. Situated in Jeddah, the project evokes Benoy’s dedication to creating places that will inspire the users and have a positive impact on the wider community and environment. Spread over an area of 31,336sqm in total, the Global Business School will provide the core academic, executive education, administrative and faculty facilities over six levels. The larger South wing will house a gym, sports

arena, auditorium, knowledge centre, and student dining halls, supporting the core academic and executive accommodation. The North wing, with the smaller footprint and its own distinctive form, will house the innovation centre, faculty offices, and teaching accommodation. “Benoy’s design approach for GBS is driven by Shababco’s innovative approach of a business school that embodies the country’s rapidly-evolving image and is the manifestation of the increasingly progressive approach that KSA is embracing and promoting. BORA is brought to the UAE market by Kitchen & Bath Gallery at Dubai Design District, where the stunning state-of-theart showroom is opening soon. Luxurious interiors of Pearl Rotana Hotel Capital Centre by Miaja Design Group Middle Eastern reflections of the past in a modern business hotel setting is the highlight of the newly opened Pearl Rotana Hotel Capital Centre in Abu Dhabi. In Middle Eastern culture, geometric shapes and repetitive patterns are used on decorative motifs, tapestry, and buildings. An exploration of this arabesque style, amid a delicate manipulation of light, shadows and reflection, form the interior concept for the newly opened Pearl Rotana Hotel, designed by Miaja Design Group. Located in the heart of Abu Dhabi’s business district, the Pearl Rotana is a modern and luxurious business hotel. As you enter the exquisite hotel lobby, you are welcomed with strong, grounding architectural lines and the main art pieces ‘Tessellations I-IV.’ These impressive arabesque copper installations create a play between light and shadow, and ‘reflections’ of these geometric patterns become part of the design language of the hotel. Throughout art history, the use of light and shadow has been revisited as a medium to create

mood, tone and atmosphere. Contemporary artist James Turrell, who is known for manipulating light and shadow as both subject and medium, said: “Light is not so much something that reveals, it is itself the revelation.” A similar parallel can be made about Isabelle Miaja’s design. She commented: “The design is a reflection onto itself and becomes a new dimension.” Subtle, flowing patterns reproduced on the walls, floors, fabrics and art pieces throughout the hotel, quietly echo the arabesque concept. The main guest rooms have sweeping views of the Capital Centre, while the premium rooms overlook the waters of the Arabian Gulf. The movement, repetition and continuity of the shapes produce a new facet in the manipulation of materials and linear form. By the main counter in the lobby, luminous stainless steel sculptures by French artist, Guillaume Roche are inspired by natural movement within the transformation of torn raw materials, and the contrast between raw and polished minimalist shapes.

The Residences JLT by Signature Developers on track for completion The Residences JLT by Signature Developers is on track for completion this year and, once finished, the building will hold a prime position in Jumeirah Lakes Towers (JLT). The Residences JLT feature a collection of 80 luxurious and stylish abodes fittingly named Monogram, Autograph, and Signature. The superstructure comes with glass pods that extend outward offering spectacular views of the city. The residential units are located on the upper floors of the Taj Hotel, from 20th to 42nd floors. The Monogram Collection includes 53 two- and three-bedroom residences located between floors 20 to 30, with up to five apartments per floor. Each of these apartments are meticulously designed with contemporary details, smooth lines, clean finishes, and ergonomic interiors. The units have three-sided open balconies and terraces, offering views of JLT, Emirates Hills, Dubai Marina, and Downtown Dubai.

Each Monogram residence has up to 3m ceiling height, ambient lighting, marble floors, and advanced technology to create living spaces that are ideal for both entertaining and relaxation. The master bedroom spans up to 26sqm and ensuite bedrooms between 18 and 23sqm each. While the kitchen boasts modern quartz stone countertops and minimalistic wood veneer and glass cabinets. Every kitchen is integrated with the latest oven, refrigerator, and dishwasher. The luxurious bathrooms are fitted with Kohler sanitary ware, include vanity mirrors and large walk-in rain showers. The Autograph Collection comprises 21 units in total, of which 18 units extend across floors 31 to 36 with three units per floor and three-bedroom apartments on floors 38, 40, and 42. The living room is bathed in hues of grey and brown, a blend of cosmopolitan flair and classic accents.

hey are here to conquer the design industry by storm. Roma Arora had a candid chat with the creative heads behind the four design startups in the region who are already the talk of the town. Starting with JuxtaPiece, it was formed by co-founders-Arghavan Hatamabadi and Hanin Abbas Hazeem with an aim of bringing budget-effective customisation to everyone. Moving on, Janaika Elders is the founder of Urban Nest, the online portal selling exclusive and curated collection of leading Dutch interior design items and now have a store at Ibn Battuta Gate as well. Next in the pipeline is an exciting design firm - The Hub Interiors by talented duo - Ayesha Al Moosa, cofounder and Yasmin Noureldin, the managing partner. Another interesting startup is by young interior designer and CEO, Mariem Seddiqi, and her venture Grand Hills Interiors. Learning more about each of them hereon:

JuxtaPiece The company brief: JuxtaPiece was founded in June 2015 and officially launched in March 2017. The brand provides an all in one design and execution solution created using a system that is made to order, budget considerate, and maintains the spirit of handcrafting. It provides a wide range of product lines that are customised as per the client’s needs and requirement. The products include the signature products, personalised portraits, bespoke corporate giveaways, limited edition keepsakes, and exclusive wall features. USP of the brand: A unique system of juxtaposing pieces using wood as the primary material to create customised, budget effective, and handcrafted products. Funding: The company was started with the personal funding of Hatamabadi and Hazeem. The company received a grant of AED 35,000, a trade license, and access to mentorship tracks from Sharjah Entrepreneurship Center (Sheraa). JuxtaPiece is an organically grown business that is self-funded and use product sales as a source of investment into the company. Furthermore, they’re currently working on collaborations with online and retail outlets to scale. Target audience: Our main customer segment is corporates/private entities who are looking for unique gifts and trophies for their events. On the other hand, our portraits and exclusive wall features are mainly designed for art enthusiasts looking for a special customised product. Plans for future: As part of our future plans, we are adopting a zero-waste methodology whereby all of our products are environment-friendly. Also, we are working on integrating motorised technology into our products in order to make them more interactive and enhance the user experience. Arghavan Hatamabadi, 25, co-founder and designer at JuxtaPiece, is an Iranian interior designer graduated from the American University of Sharjah (AUS). She is the recipient of the MAD (Motivation, Attitude, and Dedication) Interior Design Award from AUS. Hanin Abbas Hazeem, 23, co-founder and designer at JuxtaPiece, is an interior designer graduated from the American University of Sharjah. A Jordanian citizen with Palestinian roots was born in Dubai, UAE.

Urban Nest The company brief: Urban Nest was launched in September 2017. The brand sells exclusive and curated collection of leading Dutch interior design items in the Middle East through our online store. These items can be also viewed at their new studio located in the IBN Battuta Gate offices. USP of the brand: We curate our items exclusively from well-reputed brands including HK Living and Puik Design who work with the Netherlands’ most talented designers like Pepe Heykoop, Lex Pott, and Ontwerpduo. We currently live in a society that strives to differentiate itself and is always on the lookout for that unique item. As such we aim to provide items that stand out and have a story. Funding: For all startups, it is crucial to have a solid business plan with a thorough risk assessment. Like any startup, you learn while you go, and you should have a “small cushion” to help when needed. Urban Nest did that and was able to launch with the personal investment of the founder. Target audience: I work very closely and have good relationships with the designers that we represent, such as HK Living and Puik Design to understand the product innovations and know about the new collections. Our customers are a wide range of companies like boutique concept stores, design firms and other talented individual designers as well. As a member of the Dutch Design Centre based in Dubai Design District, we participate in their events to promote Dutch design in the Middle East region. Plans for future: The brand is always on the lookout for interior design labels with inspiring stories to fit our philosophy. In April I had the exciting opportunity to attend the PERUMODA, a trade show in Lima, supported by the Peru Trade & Investment office in Dubai. Following this recent trip and because of the founders’ own Peruvian background and connections, we are currently exploring the options to add some South American designers with unique stories to our collection. Janaika Elders is the founder and brainchild of Urban Nest. Elders has a multicultural background with a Dutch father and Peruvian mother. She has lived in many countries like Brazil, Mexico, France to name a few, and now in Dubai for the last eight years with her Lebanese husband and two-year-old son. She has a Bachelor degree in International Business and has worked as a supply chain manager in the FMCG industry for the last 10 years. However, she was always fascinated and passionate about interior design. Janaika Elders

The Hub Interiors The company brief: Since the launch in 2015, the main goal of The Hub Interiors has always been to develop close working relationships with their clientele. Based in Dubai Design District (d3), The Hub Interior Decoration is a boutique design firm highlighting the sophistication and glamour of Dubai, whilst keeping the authenticity of its Arabic roots. USP of the brand: We specialise in residential designs. We focus relentlessly on achieving the highest quality standards in the industry. Grand Hills Interiors The company brief: Grand Hills Interiors was recently launched in April 2018. Mariem Seddiqi is the CEO of the company and she works along with her partner and managing director Basmah Siddique who primarily looks after the sales, marketing, and developments. USP of the brand: The company firmly believes in working closely with clients and understanding their requirements. If we get a big job, we work with a consultant that helps with the execution of work with quality. Funding: Seddiqi used her own funds and collaborated with joint ventures related fit-out factories to provide competitive prices. We aim to sustain our presence with the two-year budget we have with them at the moment. Target audience: Hotel, commercial projects, and renovation of offices and villas Plans for future: We have an Letter of Intent (LOI) for a G+17, four-star hotel to be located in Tecom with its design completed and expecting the contract to be awarded to us within next three months. This is a three years project and would amount to AED7mn for interior fit-out work. Another project we are looking forward to is a G +1 mall located in Meydan which has got its drawings approved and would amount to AED1.5mn for fit-out work. Who, where, and what inspires you? I am inspired by the solution of the puzzle and the beauty of nature. I’m intrigued about finding unique solutions to complex problems and issues, whether they are emotional or physical. Added to that the beauty of creation in nature in all its magnificent forms and on how nature has also solved many of the issues we attempt to resolve today, it’s called biomimicry, looking to nature for inspiration.

What are you currently working on? Many, many projects. I love the variety of clients and projects I am blessed to work on. The range of projects goes from retail to hospitality, masterplans to exterior skin. We have just completed the new Four Seasons Hotel in Kuwait and the latest phase of the Avenues in Kuwait, both projects I have been deeply involved in for many years and pushed the boundaries of experience and the impact design can have on our everyday lives.

What is your favourite project to date from the region? My personal favourite is the Gate Building at DIFC in Dubai, as it was the first project I worked in the region.

What do you feel about the architecture here? There is such a rush sometimes to build the craft and care is not taken to allow the projects to reach their full potential. While one can understand the reasons, architecture and the built environment has such a major impact on our planet and resources. Everyone involved in the process should take on that responsibility to the highest degree as we are building the future for our children and sometimes one must step back, look at the finished work and say, was that worth it? This is not new or unique to the region, it’s been going on for many centuries around the world, the difference now is the quantity and speed of construction and the impact that has on our environment and quality of life.

What will be the most important factors influencing the future of architecture? Natural resources for sure. Architecture is emotive, it’s about inspiration, it’s about exploration, it’s about living, and to me, it’s about saving the planet. We need to get smart, collaborate beyond our borders, and embrace the challenges we all face. We need to work with the best thinkers, engineers,

visionaries, and scientists to craft a vision for how we will all live in the next century.

much faster, with experience, opportunity, and reward; we need to build a core of architectural excellence that is local but global in its outlook.

What do you see as the biggest challenge facing the design industry in the next five years in this region?

How is 3D technology a boon for design and architecture?

Talent! Architecture is a fascinating and inspiring profession; unfortunately, it’s not well-rewarded financially and other industries reward the creative mind more than our own profession. In many parts of the world, architecture benefits from patrons who invest beyond the business case in architects to inspire and regenerate places or capture memories and moments. We here need to help the young talent and improve our home-grown talent

3D technology is simply part of the evolution. It’s another way of achieving our dreams and aspirations; I don’t believe it’s better or worse its just another tool and will have huge impacts on certain parts of our industry. We have explored the 3D printed communities to help solve emergency housing issues around the world. The project was the inspiration behind our concept for the first 3D-printed office now built in Dubai.

creative criticism? Paul McElroy, partner at Kinnersley Kent Design, tells why collaborative critiques should be a regular part of the projects

reative criticism in the context of our industry means having the confidence to challenge a designer’s ideas; to critique his or her work to provide reflection and move the design response forward. Far from insulting someone’s designs (not even in a “creative” way!), it means discussing and critiquing them in a respectful, constructive manner to build upon the outcome. The critique approach should be based on understanding the rationale and discussing the design response, exploring alternative solutions. The aim should be to stretch and strengthen a designer, providing feedback that encourages him or her to grow. The origins of the creative “crit” are thought to date back to Ancient Greece, yet it has as much relevance today as ever. Whether collaboratively reviewing our colleagues’ ideas, auditing new project launches in the sector, or respectfully challenging a client’s brief, creative criticism helps the design sector worldwide to build upon good ideas to create even better outcomes. For centuries, creative criticism has been at the forefront of architecture and design journalism, with writers critiquing the projects they publish. Design teams need to be prepared to accept the final review of their work from journalists experienced in the field, even if they disagree. The crit has always been a key part of the design and architecture courses at universities and colleges worldwide, but there has been a slight decline in the tradition of studio culture due to financial pressures. In the world of work, today’s technology, while beneficial in so many ways, has meant faster turnaround times and tighter deadlines. As a result, critiquing work throughout the design process can take a back seat. At Kinnersley Kent Design, having a strong studio culture is a core part of our design philosophy and we work hard to ensure that collaborative critiques are a regular part of projects. Admittedly, the crit can be one of the most intimidating parts of the job, especially for younger designers. There is an innate vulnerability in putting your work forward to be reviewed by others. However, it’s crucial that designers are used to presenting and explaining their ideas, providing a strong defense that intelligently supports their approach. These skills are not only essential when presenting ideas to clients, but also make projects more interesting. When critiquing work with your design team – whether as the client or a fellow designer – it’s important to establish an environment of trust and respect where everyone knows it’s okay to disagree. This helps to encourage the team to be receptive

Client teams are not always experienced in this style of open discussion, especially if it isn’t a natural part of their sector, but it is hugely beneficial. The crit should be an active

rather than a passive experience for the designer presenting, with discussions that are constructive and relevant to the brief. Each party should explain their thoughts and opinions, avoiding statements based on personal taste or preference. This takes the conversation beyond whether or not each party likes it, leading to valuable conversations and collective learning that grows good ideas further. This striving to create something exceptional is ultimately at the heart of design, and why many of us chose this career path in the first place. As designers, we have an innate restlessness with the way things are, and a natural curiosity that encourages us to challenge the status quo. This drive is not usually out of arrogance, but rather a pragmatic aim to improve things. Imagining different scenarios and questioning “what if?” is the very essence of what we do.

What is the brand philosophy of Cosentino? The Cosentino Group is a global, family-owned company that produces and distributes high-value innovative surfaces for architecture and design. Tell us something about your showroom at Dubai Design District (d3). Cosentino has had a presence in the Middle East for

the last five years, catering to projects across the GCC, Jordan, and Lebanon. We opened the doors to Cosentino City Dubai at d3 in November last year. The Middle East is a growing market for us and it made sense to strengthen our operations by having a dedicated showroom right in the heart of the region’s design hotspot, closer to where all the action is happening now. Our 300sqm showroom in d3 is the 10th global Cosentino City in the world. Our Dubai City showroom is designed to incorporate the display of large format slabs. We have an interactive room where visitors can engage with the physical samples and virtually access the entire sample catalogue using touchscreen technology. We take the interactive experience even further with a software program that allows visitors to design and explore the best options for façades, kitchens, floorings, and bathrooms.

What are the surfaces best suited for the Middle East and other GCC countries? For the Middle East market, we have two pioneering and technologically advanced brands Silestone and Dekton, which allow the creation of unique designs for home and public spaces. Silestone is a quartz surface for interior applications, gaining popularity worldwide for its usage in kitchen and bathroom worktops. Dekton is an extremely versatile ultra-compact surface that can be used for both interior and exterior applications. Given the diversity of the projects in the region, both are well suited and find applications in everything from facades to kitchen and bathroom worktops, flooring and swimming pools. Both Dekton and Silestone are extremely low maintenance and available in a wide range of over 130 colours.

What are the exciting projects you're currently working in the region? We are currently engaged in some prestigious residential and commercial projects including the W Hotel, Marina Gate, and Belgravia by Ellington.

How is the competition in your industry and how do you deal with it? The surfaces industry is a very competitive and challenging sector with players offering products across price and quality ranges. And I feel that it is important to have this competition because it not only gives customers the choice but it also gives us the opportunity to educate customers on the importance of quality. We deal with competition

through differentiation. We invest heavily in R&D to create technological innovations that enhance material strength, quality, aesthetics, and applications. We are quick to react and respond with new finishes every six months. While we are operating in a price sensitive market, our focus is on playing an advisory role to our clients and illustrating through example the benefits of investing in quality and long-lasting solutions.

lassy, inviting, and very charming, ‘The country home’ in Cairo by Egypt-based architecture and interior design studio, Badie Architects, is based on an open design concept that encourages freedom of movement and the warmth of a more intimate home. Mohamed Badie, founder and CEO sheds light on this country style-inspired apartment, “We are inspired mostly from the French country homes, in terms of the use of natural materials, hefty beamed ceilings, and carefully detailed wood work. This style is visible in this project as well. The use of stone usually associated with this style was applied in the creation of the fireplace. We also choose to use raw brick walls that are carefully arranged to perfection.” Red Bricks applied to walls and wood works which, in turn, applied to floors and ceilings, added a warm and natural feeling to

the spaces. Exposed brick walls and window arches act as a major architectural highlight of this project. “We considered the space as an experience for the user. We focused on creating a unique element in each space using the same materials; that resulted in the continuity of the warm vibe initially created,” says Badie. Rather than relying on monochromatic shades and bold pops of colours to create visually exciting contrasts, Badie chose such a design that creates a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Badie adds, “The colour palette consists of warm, earthy, natural color that in themselves create the visual contrast needed. The fiery red in the bricks, the sunny yellow in the shades of wood and furthermore, bright black and dull greys on the wall punctuate the bright colours and define accessory pieces placed on it.”

Tell us more about GROHE’s first showroom in the Middle East? We are proud to have opened our very first showroom of the Middle East, Africa, and East Mediterranean market right here in Dubai and hope to be a part of creating exceptional experiences for all our consumers in the region. For the showroom, the idea was to have the biggest hub here in Dubai. We wanted to have the perfect location and a showroom that can incorporate the office as well. The reason is that we have the designers, architects, and endcustomers walking-in and it’s important for us to engage them and explain the products. So, it’s just not a display of production, it’s a great interaction place. I’m glad that we have achieved that successfully at our premises in Media One Hotel.

Who are your biggest clients? We work very closely with designers, architects, and developers, as they form a major part of our clientele.

How important is innovation to your brand? Innovation is one of the best methods to succeed. For GROHE, in the last three years, 70% of our sales happened due to the innovations we did with our products. Consumers are aware of everything these days; they want fresh ideas and innovative products. From design to technology, to sustainability, we integrate everything perfectly to our products. We have launched the 1m shower; nobody has that kind of product in the market with the functionality and the kind of smart control that we’re providing. We make products, which

INTERVIEW Do your clients demand eco-friendly products?

Developers who are concerned about the green buildings who’re interested in scoring green points for their projects are very much keen on the eco-friendly range. They are using the products which result in water and energy saving. We have a great range of green products, and there are some products that we can tailor make like a concealed tank which comes in standard three and six litres. We can also factory set it to four and 2.5litres to make sure that they lead to low water consumption in your bathrooms. We give a wide menu to our consumers and can do changes as per the requirements in our products.

What is the focus for GROHE at the moment? We are moving towards lead-free products. So, we are about 98% lead-free in a lot of our range, especially the entire kitchen range so that no metal or lead should contact the water. This way we are taking a lot of initiatives.

What are the most overlooked features in kitchen and bathroom? In case of kitchens, people opt for fancy kitchen wardrobes, and when it comes to the kitchen faucets, they end up buying the low-quality products thinking that the maid will use it eventually. But faucet is such an important part of washing dishes and cooking food, how could one ignore that? We ignore the basic inlet of water, which needs maximum attention. In the bathroom, I particularly feel that people are still not investing in hygienic products. A lot of people are using health faucets and trigger sprays, while I believe moving to a shower toilet is something, which is the future. Europe, which is a dry market, has already accepted this technology and I am surprised that it’s still taking time to catch up in the Middle East.

What are the new offerings from GROHE? I would like to discuss GROHE SmartControl technology here, which is perfect for a designer, developer, and an end consumer. It has volume control, all kinds of sprays, and thermostat control, it’s a fantastic product, and a new innovation. We are in a leadership position already in the Middle East. We have now more offerings in the kitchen area, we are introducing kitchen skins, and we are offerings in the ceramic areas too. Being number one brand in sanitary fittings, we are moving towards kitchens and space and would occupy that space as well.

the natural springboard for developing uniquely personal projects. Our project in Emirates Hills is for a family with young children who will use the house extensively and variously. The family is very close-knit and the house will be a centre for all related activities with areas designated for communal, educational, and leisure areas. Then, the house in Al Mamzar is a sanctuary for one of the most prominent individuals in the region. Here, privacy, the understanding of idiosyncratic personality, and creating an environment that meets the specific needs of the individual are paramount. Our project in KSA is for another of the regarded families of the region and comprises a number of individual villas for each of the family’s members and their respective families arranged in the entire compound.

What is your opinion of the major developments that are taking over Dubai's skyline? Again, there is no doubting the ‘impressiveness; of the Dubai skyline from a purely visual experience perspective; however, I am less concerned with the skyline formed by the edifices and more concerned with the quality of the environment they create for their inhabitants. I think too much of today’s developments fail to properly consider the actual purpose – environments for people – and are

concerned solely with aesthetics for commercial reasons.

What kind of buildings would you like to see more in Dubai?

Dubai has built an incredibly structured framework for onward development. Its achievements are, in many respects, unrivalled and are clear for all to see. However, for me, what I would like to see is a bit less structure and a better integration of scale. The great cities of the world are built on organic plans which promote occupation, engagement, and provoke discovery. Dubai now needs to grow somewhat ’organically’ – both physically and culturally - within its established framework in order to create a more dynamic and sustainable fabric.

What sustainability means to you? We’re often asked to create projects that will become family heirlooms that will be handed down to and valued by generations to come. These projects must be both physically robust and architecturally timeless enough to withstand the test of time - this is sustainability in its simplest form. Within projects, we look to deploy modern methods of construction and to source locally wherever possible. We try to bring as many of the materials as possible from within a 500-mile radius and employ local labour; all of which has a significantly positive impact on the environment.

You are working on three residential projects in the region. Tell us more about them? We are currently working on three significant private residences in the region: two in Dubai and one in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). In Dubai, we are designing the new homes for two prominent families and in Saudi Arabia, we are designing the private residence compound for one of the major families of the Kingdom.

What was the design brief given for these projects? When are these projects expected to complete? The two projects in Dubai could not be more different. For me, this is the point of interest and

I

f you want to run into the wild away from the madness of the city, then the newly opened Hotel Cartagena located on the 72nd floor of Tower B at the JW Marriott Marquis, Business Bay is your best bet. Cartagena has replaced Morah, a Mediterranean and Middle Eastern fusion restaurant that was here earlier. Tropical-inspired interiors and vibrant accessories form the backdrop of this Latin American hub serving everything from Cuba, Puerto Rico to Columbia with the flair of the Caribbean and hints of Asian flavours. Elmar Pichormer, partner at Atelier EPJ who worked on the interiors of the Cartagena highlights the design aspect of this property. Pichormer says: “Cartagena has taken the place of the Middle Eastern restaurant Morah, honestly it wasn’t sufficiently successful. From the design perspective, Morah could have been done in a better way. The lighting was a huge problem because it was very bright with lots of direct light. We had LEDs running along the parameter of the floating roof, and the mullions were white. The issue with that was that one would walk into the restaurant at night and not able to see the views. Considering we on 72nd floor, with stunning 360o panoramic views across the city through floorto-ceiling windows, this should have been our biggest design asset.”

The place was given an upside down makeover and Pichormer and his team made sure that all the design aspects are well taken care of in advance. “We ripped-off the entire lighting out and filled the mullions with dark grey matte foil; this helped us in solving the view part of the night. Now one can see the beautiful views without any reflection or any other confusion. We also worked pulled in the reflective ceiling and it has changed the look and feel of the space altogether. ” The place is decorated with tropical wallpapers and same symmetry is maintained through the premises like the inclusion of the peacockinspired chairs, cushions, and funky table tops.

Alongside the amazing views, the interiors depict the harmony of the jungle life with funky, vibrant décor, plush green foliage, raisin monkeys, and parrot figurines carefully placed all across the hotel. “The floor was white earlier, we stained it dark brown to give a dramatic feel. One of the biggest challenges was to fill up vast open space with the staircase in the middle of it which takes the guests to the other level of the Cartagena. So we added the beautiful mural painting by the South African artist carefully lit by customed-designed spotlights hidden under the foliage. Once a small local Clerkenwell event, London Festival of Architecture is an annual, month-long, city-wide celebration of interior design experimentation. The event first began in 2004, and has since grown to become Europe’s biggest annual architecture festival. It attracts thousands of visitors, hosting panels from major cultural and academic institutions. LFA offers guidance for designers of various expertise. The vast majority of events are free, and are staged by a core festival programming team working alongside architecture and design practices and practitioners, leading cultural and academic institutions, artists and many others.

Middle East? Dyson Ltd is a British technology company, headquartered in Malmesbury, United Kingdom. In 1978, founder and inventor James Dyson became frustrated with his vacuum cleaner's diminishing performance. Five years and 5,217 prototypes later, he had invented the world’s first bagless vacuum cleaner. Today, Dyson technology is sold in 75 markets globally. Dyson has grown from one man and one idea to a technology company with an ever-growing team of engineers and scientists at its core. In the past four years, Dyson revenue has more than doubled and Dyson’s technology investments have tripled. By 2020, Dyson aims to hire another 3,000 engineers globally. Dyson has opened its Middle East and Africa headquarters in Dubai since 2011.

What makes it unique? The Dyson Airblade Wash+Dry hand dryer combines in a single touchless unit a tap, and a hand dryer that dries hands in 14 seconds with HEPA-filtered air. The multi-function design helps to save space in the washroom and reduces the problem of water dripping on the floor as users move from a handwashing area to a separate hand drying station. It is also up to 39% quieter than its predecessor.

Why should businesses purchase your product? The new Dyson Airblade Wash+Dry hand dryer costs EUR34 a year to run, compared to its

predecessor’s EUR48. Dyson Airblade hand dryers cost up to 78% less to run than other hand dryers, and up to 98% less than paper towels. Dyson Airblade hand dryers also produce up to 79% less CO2 than paper towels and some other hand dryers.

What’s next for your company in 2018 and onwards? Dyson’s philosophy is about inventing technology to solve the problems that others seem to ignore.
