Class of 2011 will be the first out of Kolding School of Design to be awarded the MDes title. The academic degree represents the culmination of the school’s intense efforts to receive accreditation as research institution. The title signifies advanced level qualifications, and to the individual graduates as such represents an important parameter in the competition for the best jobs in Denmark and abroad. To Kolding School of Design the title of MDes has great symbolic value indicating a new era in the history of the school; an era in which education, research, and development will intertwine on all levels.

Education, research, and development constitute the pillars of the school. Merging the three in all of our activities is vital to us. For instance, we strive to integrate research results in the teaching, which, moreover, deals with concrete development assignments presented via our on-going business collaborations, etc.

In 2011 we have seen the school’s research and development activities expand significantly, and I am sure this trend will continue. An increasing number of companies display interest in establishing direct dialogue with us, for instance by setting up multi-year collaboration agreements. At the same time, the school’s research funds are increasing. However, this positive development also involves great responsibilities. Now we must integrate the two expanding areas and the school’s teaching to benefit the school as a whole.

Mads Nipper Bestyrelsesformand

These years, the school is opening up even more – to the business community and to the world. Design2innovate, a large-scale project to promote trade, represents the focal point in our efforts directed at small and medium-sized companies. The educational collaborations with Ghana and Shanghai show our commitment to internationalisation. All of the above have made 2011 a challenging, stimulating and educational year. Thank you to the school’s collaborating partners, staff and students for a dedicated and significant effort. I am sure 2012 will turn out even better! Mads Nipper Chairman of The Board

Design eller dø

ELSEBETH GERNER NIELSEN REKTOR/RECTOR

Oveni har Museum of Modern Art i New York meddelt, at Hâns kanylecontainer nu indgår i museets permanente samling.

Design or die

According to WHO, the re-use of contaminated needles and inadvertent needle sticks are estimated to be responsible for more than 1.3 million deaths annually. Industrial designer Hân Pham has found a solution to this problem. For her graduation project at Kolding School of Design, Hân developed a plastic lid which converts regular soda cans into permanent disposal containers for used luer-slip syringe needles; an easy and inexpensive solution to a massive problem. While imaker holds the rights, Hân’s invention, referred to as the Yellowone Needle Cap, will be distributed in third world countries by Bestnet based in Kolding. In addition, Hân’s disposal container has been entered into the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Naturally, the school is immensely proud of Hân’s achievements. Apart from being the story of a great talent, Hân’s story represents an excellent example of the current development of Danish design. Design is increasingly about addressing challenges and about designing solutions and entire systems rather than creating individual objects. At the same time, design is on a path of becoming an innovation method, a way to develop. We refer to the term ”design thinking”.

Design research is an expanding field. This growth enables us to increase our knowledge of how the designer designs and verbalise the designer’s work methods. This enables designers to teach non-designers how to apply these. We can teach others to think and work as a designer, indeed without turning them into one. Rather, we improve their innovation skills. Currently, Hân is writing a design manual ”Design method in practice”. The manual is directed at personnel within the healthcare sector and contains concrete examples of how change processes can be facilitated using design methods. Meanwhile, she is working on a design project focusing on the handling of medicine at the Kolding Hospital children’s ward. The objective of the project is to eliminate inappropriate medication. Both projects are run by the Development Department at Kolding School of Design in collaboration with the Region of Southern Denmark hospital service. The broadness of Hân’s portfolio corresponds to the broadness characterising the work going on in general at Kolding School of Design these years: working with design as giving shape (to products and services) and design as innovation method. Denmark and Europe are experiencing a serious economic crisis; probably the worst since World War II. Certain questions arise: How will we make a living? And where will the solutions come from? In 2011 I served as a member of the DesignVision2020

Committee. The committee was established by the Danish Ministry of Culture and the Danish Ministry of Business to create a vision for Danish design. The committee proposes that Denmark becomes “the world’s leading design society”.

This means a society in which design is a primary contributor in making objects and processes meaningful to the individual while supporting innovation in industry and the public sector. In short: Design or die! This vision is substantiated. Investigations show that companies that include design have better bottom-line figures than companies that do not. In addition, Denmark has a proud history of design to build on; characterised first and foremost by design being a part of people’s everyday lives. Design helps make life easier; design constitutes part of the foundation of the welfare society. This said, there is also reason to warn against the praising of the many blessings of design. Naturally, the designer cannot save the world. That is, not alone anyway. Time and again, we at Kolding School of Design fall short because we do not have the required technical knowhow or lack knowledge of market and economy. Therefore, we have established a master in design management together with the University of Southern Denmark; a master which has proven very popular. The faculty for social studies and the faculty for humanistic studies contribute to the programme, as do we. The students come with different backgrounds and learn to work across disciplines creating complete solutions that integrate research, sensory perception, dreaming, design, market surveys, business models, etc. Long-term we would like to have access to the technical field of knowledge within Campus Kolding. The technical paradigm and its terminology remain predominant in society’s perception of what generates growth; of what really counts. Thus, designers need to learn the language of engineers while also having a practical inclination to tap into the knowledge of engineers in order to create solutions that are operational and meaningful; so that concepts of the mind turn into prototypes that can be tested. 2011 has been an eventful year filled with challenges. For years, Kolding School of Design has been an independent institution under the auspices of the Danish Ministry of Culture. Along with the other design and architectural schools we are now part of the new Ministry of Education. We look forward to the collaboration and anticipate being able to contribute to the innovation strategy of the Ministry. Also, we feel confident that artistic development work, which forms part of the knowledge base of the design and architectural schools, will inspire the additional educations of the Ministry. Research is not the only way to achieve realisation. Sometimes the hands outsmart the head; knowledge can emerge which the mind cannot generate by itself. Perhaps this explains why so many young people feel displaced in existing education systems that focus primarily on the mind, books, and theory. In this area, I believe that especially conventional universities can learn from us and our work of utilising the intuitive, tacit intelligence of the hands and the body. In return, we can definitely benefit from the long research tradition on which Danish universities are founded. The new sphere can also serve as a launch pad for an even closer collaboration with the university colleges, including TEKO and The Animation Workshop in Viborg. The following pages present many further examples of what 2011 has had to offer. For us, 2012 is already in full swing. We continue our efforts of consolidating the education following the recent accreditation. In compliance with our development plan we focus a lot of energy on further describing our education and the culture of our school; on identifying and verbalising what makes Kolding School of Design special professionally and socially. Our staff and students have a clear sense of what defines

TEKO og The Animation Workshop i Viborg. Denne gang i Ghana.

us. However, we must be able to translate this sense into words; into more than drawings and animations in order to be able to convince excellent students, foreign and domestic, to choose Kolding. This also applies to researchers and employees. We need to attract the best. This requires letting them know that Kolding School of Design is a top-level design school. Besides sharpening the saw with regards to our own educational programmes, I hope that 2012 will foster new design programmes offered by us exclusively or in conjunction with others. Particularly, I would like to be able to finally welcome a jewellery education to Kolding! At the same time, we must expand present educational collaborations, not least with CIID, Copenhagen Institute of Interactive Design, which Kolding School of Design is proud to be a part of. In 2011, we launched a new international educational collaboration. This time in Ghana. I had the pleasure of being a part of it and experience first-hand the vital importance for students and staff of travelling abroad. Being in a foreign context brings you great personal insight. Over and over you are surprised by your cultural encoding; an encoding which at times erupts into pure ethnocentrism; into great self-satisfaction or smugness, depending on the eyes of the beholder. Yet, I also experienced how incredibly capable our staff and students are of keeping a sense of perspective in delicate and difficult situations. The independence that we sometimes feel is lacking in our students at home was present at full throttle among the 62 students in Ghana and the 30 students who spent part of the semester in Shanghai. Internationalisation is the key focal area of the school’s development plan. Therefore, in 2012, we intend to return to Ghana to continue the great collaboration with KNUST University in Kumasi and a number of private and public players. In Shangahi and Kumasi both we wish the collaborations to be full-circle: education, research, artistic development work, and business collaboration. Our main objective is for our staff and students to spend as much time abroad as possible working and studying in order to learn to manage ourselves and become inspired. If then, to top it all off, we can help tackle some of the challenges facing China and Africa (meaning all of us), we will be very pleased. One of the key international ventures in 2012 is the school’s participation in the Milan Furniture Fair in April. Here, we will create a unique exhibition – the first of three – of ground-breaking design with an artistic dimension and a commercial potential. The innovative design projects are being developed in collaboration between six present and former students and six Danish companies. Having received university status the school wants to use the Milan event to focus on the importance of strategic and creative collaborations between designers and companies as well as attract international students and international press. Kolding School of Design wants to be of use. We want to educate some of the world’s best students, and we want to teach the entire society the importance of design;

12

Elsebeth Gerner Nielsen Rektor

why society cannot do without design. Design2innovate, a large-scale regional project to promote trade, is a major venture into this field. We hope that the business community and the public sector will welcome our D2I offer to create even better products, services, and systems using design methods and development of excellent design. Fortunately, we are standing on firm ground, not least thanks to etrans, our collaborations with ECCO, DONG Energy, Bjert Invest, Lego and many more. When we at Kolding School of Design seek the highest first and hope that everything else will come to us, we are merely sharing the vision of Jesus Christ and later the Hippies; nothing less and only slightly rewritten. Happy New Year! Thank you to all who contribute content on a daily basis and thus made this annual report possible. Thank you to all the partners who have provided financial funding or in other ways supported the school’s activities during 2011. Elsebeth Gerner Nielsen Rector

Uddannelse: Teori og fag tæt sammen

LONE DALSGAARD ANDRÉ UDDANNELSESLEDER /HEAD OF EDUCATION

Education: Close link between theory and specialist domains

What are the most important advances the school has seen education wise in 2011? – Research-based knowledge and theory have been successfully integrated in the teaching. Previously, the theoretic element of the teaching ran parallel to the specialist domains. Now they effectively supplement each other in the project teaching. Therefore, we have set up teacher’s teams comprising a design teacher and a researcher teaching joint classes, for instance design history. – Furthermore, we have strengthened the methodological part of the education. We have raised the bar by introducing more mandatory courses as part of the master’s degree programme and by conducting a number of master classes by high profile international visiting faculty. What is the next big challenge in terms of education? – Currently, we are busy defining the school’s view of design. It is about expressing what distinguishes us professionally and culturally. More than before, we need to be able to accurately define ourselves, not least in order to attract more international students. – Moreover, we must intensify our efforts to create even closer collaborations between the school’s core areas: education, research, and development. - Finally, we must focus more on creating a demand for our graduates, for instance by integrating business-oriented projects throughout the education and maintaining practice as a key element of our knowledge base.

Forskning: Fra evaluering til konsolidering

THOMAS MARKUSSEN LEKTOR /ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR

Research: From evaluation to consolidation

What are the most important advances the school has seen research wise in 2011? – Having successfully completed an accreditation process and achieved status as education and research institution at university level, Kolding School of Design’s research activities have now entered a consolidation phase. – We are in the process of consolidating the school’s research plan and building an excellent research environment while demonstrating a clear-cut outward profile. This includes preparing the Nordic Design Research Society Conference in 2013. Additionally, in 2011, we have hosted a number of international research seminars underlining Kolding’s position as a principal player in international design research. Also, we are developing research method courses for PhD fellows in collaboration with Aarhus School of Architecture and the Danish Design School. And not least, we have decided to advertise for the school’s first design professor. What is the next big challenge in terms of research? – Close collaboration with the school’s education and development activities is key to the school’s research culture. This is something we are already giving priority. – Moreover, moving from the Ministry of Culture to the Ministry of Education and entering an even closer dialogue with classic university research will be exciting to us. We can learn a great deal from classic university research. In return, Kolding School of Design can offer new insights in terms of how we conduct education and research. Our emphasis is on practice-based research, user-driven innovation, artistic experiments, and new ways of applying theory in design practice. Traditional academia is based on words; we use words and also, for instance, visualisation. – Overall, Kolding School of Design represents an entirely new kind of university connecting profession and research, as opposed to the Humboldt university tradition, which as a matter of principle separates the two spheres. In this respect, we can offer high-level innovative thinking.

Udvikling: Ekspansion på alle fronter

METTE STRØMGAARD DALBY UDVIKLINGSCHEF /HEAD OF DEVELOPMENT

Development: Expansion on all fronts

What are the most important advances the school has seen development wise in 2011? – The Development Department is expanding rapidly. In 2011 this was primarily due to Design2innovate, the large-scale project which aims to inspire the business community and public organisations to increase the use of design tools in their efforts to create growth. The school is responsible for the majority of the project’s education and communication activities. The project’s focus on general design methods is of particular advantage to us because it enables us to move across specific trades. Design methods are a key element of the school’s DNA which is why Design2innovate is an important project to the Development Department and to the school in general. – Moreover, we have achieved great results in a number of specific areas, including innovation in the fields of health, assistive technology and robot technology. The Fashion Zone project, which completed end 2011, achieved excellent results including the sustainable collection Living Lightly and an international shoe seminar. What is the next big challenge in terms of development? – We are about to implement a new organisation plan for The Development Department. It comprises three laboratories for sustainability, social inclusion and cultural diversity respectively, managed by their own specialist project manager. Making the growing portfolio of assignments and projects interact with the organisation plan will be exciting. At the same time, we must maintain our flexibility in terms of bringing in external employee resources while engaging the teachers and researchers in the work of the department.

Internationalisering

Internationalisation

Internationalisation of education is a key focal area to Kolding School of Design. We send students and employees out into the world, and we bring international researchers, designers, and not least students here. Thus, in 2011, we had the pleasure of having the great D’Wayne Edwards, American sneaker designer, in the house. Orit Bergman, Israeli illustrator conducted a master class, and Julian Roberts, British expert in Subtraction Cutting, taught his intuitive and experimental pattern cutting method to the school’s fashion and textile students. Foreign visiting students are an important element of the school’s atmosphere, and we always host around 30 international students. In addition, we send an unprecedented number of our own students out into the world. In 2011, 40 students and several teachers spent five weeks in Shanghai working with students from Tongji University on developing concepts for the layout of electric cars. 60 students and teachers went to Ghana to collaborate with local students on designing creative solutions to the country’s massive waste problems. Moreover, we advise our students to complete their internship abroad, and many of them do. The work placement period is part of the fourth-year curriculum, and approximately two-thirds of the year group find international placement. The school’s research activities are also characterised by more international focus. In 2011, a number of international researchers visited the school, some of them as participants in our international PhD seminar on design management. In the next few years, we will continue to strengthen the internationalisation of education by affiliating high-profile international visiting faculty, by having more students complete international internships, by setting up more partnerships with international design schools, and attracting more international students.

The collaboration stems from mutual interests, especially with regards to the internationalisation of education and the formation of alliances with industry. The course takes place in a dedicated studio in Copenhagen, and the programme is sponsored by three Danish Companies: Novo Nordisk, Maersk and Velux. CIID attracts students from across the world.

Can you wonder without words?

In 2009, the school entered a research agreement with Aarhus University aiming to investigate how to promote research-based teaching and develop an ”alternative university education” which considers the unique conditions and interests in terms of creativity and craftsmanship at Kolding School of Design. The focal point of this action research-oriented development project is to investigate how to create methods for teaching and supervision based on wonder using a socalled practise-phenomenological approach. How do creativity and wonder relate? Will having a wondering approach make it easier for the students to discover their own voice? Narrating vivid stories from own practice and creating Socratic communities of wonder the design teachers have explored their own teaching practice and designed various experiments of wonder for the students to participate in. The project is managed by Associate Professor Finn Thorbjørn Hansen. It is expected to be completed by the end of 2012. Learn more about the project on the school’s website.

Syrian students captured the streets of Kolding

In spring, Kolding School of Design hosted a group of Syrian students. They were sent out to explore the city and capture the essence of being Danish. The visit was part of Kolding School of Design’s perennial collaboration with the University of Damascus. The collaboration focuses on cultural diversity and exploring the visual identities and cultural rituals of the two nations. In spring 2010, Kolding students visited Damascus to explore the city with the local students and capture the essence of the city. Thanks to the local students they managed to get behind the scenes and experience parts of Damascus which are usually not visible to visitors. The Danish students were eager to requite the great experience, and some of them prepared to show places from their daily lives interested to see what the Syrians would choose to define as the essence of being Danish. The students’ assignment was to produce galleries consisting of at least four images that zoomed in on details as the maximum motif area could only be 40x40 cm. The results were presented at an exhibition at Kolding School of Design and subsequently in Damascus in connection with a workshop.

Stort erhvervsfremmeprojekt skudt i gang

Kick-off of large-scale project aiming to promote trade

Design2innovate will inspire companies of Southern Denmark to innovate through design. In the beginning of March, the foyer at Kolding School of Design filled with committed and eager people gathered to kick off Project Design2innovate. Representatives of Danish industry and public institutions came to support and, from the very start, influence the project. Everybody agreed that design is central to the discussion of what will make up our future livelihood. There was also consensus about the fact that design represents much more than specific designing and actual products. There is no question that form and function will be an increasingly important parameter in the competition to win customers. But for Design2innovate it is also a matter of “design thinking”; of using the working methods and innovative techniques of the design profession in businesses and organisations. Using ”design thinking”, the project intends to inspire companies that do not traditionally apply design methods; specifically, different creative methods and techniques for generating ideas and testing them in a specific context, e.g. proof-of-concept and rapid prototyping techniques. Stor samarbejdsaftale med ECCO

Comprehensive partnership agreement with ECCO

Udstillingens titel var “My Shoe – personal dream shoes for the real world”. We have entered an extensive three-year partnership agreement with ECCO. The agreement is important to the school, and we are proud to be able to enter such strong ties with one of the leading shoe manufacturers in the world. The agreement includes internships, participation in artistic development projects, and ECCO input to student projects. The agreement was marked with an exhibition in the spring. This concluded a course during which the students had designed ECCO shoes targeted at themselves. The title of the exhibition was “My Shoe – personal dream shoes for the real world”.

More than meets the eye

The school put spotlight on jewellery design with an exhibition of jewellery designed by former students. The exhibition displayed the works of 14 designers who for the past 16 years have been engaged in working with jewellery design although coming from very different fields. The different design backgrounds bring entirely diverse expressions to the jewellery without disclosing the individual design background. The exhibition demonstrated how different professional approaches can inspire the genre of jewellery. In the long run, we hope this mutual inspiration will result in a Danish Master’s degree in jewellery design to allow Danish jewellery designers to be able to match their foreign colleagues education-wise. Internationally, jewellery design has been part of the design school curriculum for a long time.

C.L. Seifert forventer, at 2012-studenterne vil få mulighed for at få en 100% bæredygtig studenterhue på hovedet.

Student’s cap becomes sustainable

Designer and workshop manager Pernille Fisker has created a sustainable student’s cap which is 100% biodegradable. It was developed in collaboration with uniform and cap manufacturer C.L. Seifert which produces and sells approximately 75% of the student’s caps in Denmark. The sustainable student’s cap was created under the auspices of Kolding School of Design’s Laboratory for Design, Innovation and Sustainability. Pernille Fisker’s work is based on the Cradle to Cradle concept of designing products that do not end up as polluting waste but either become part of new products in a so-called “technical cycle” or become degraded in a “biological cycle” without expelling harmful substances. The sustainable student’s cap does not contain toxic plastics, glue or other chemicals. It is created from materials such as unbleached organic cotton, wool, viscose, silk, gold, silver, leather composite, and the alternative plastic material PLA. However, C.L. Seifert was not able to meet all of Pernille Fisker’s recommendations for the 2011 version of the cap. Yet, the company has commenced a certification process with Cradle to Cradle Denmark to get the final details in place so the sustainable student’s cap can be properly certified. This process will also include the company’s packaging which will be redesigned to comply with the Cradle to Cradle concept. C.L. Seifert expects that the students graduating in 2012 will be able to wear a 100% sustainable student’s cap.

Modeshow

Fashion Show

This summer’s fashion show presenting the school’s Fashion and Textile graduates took place in a perfect setting: The beautiful concert hall of the old DR building on Rosenørns Allé. The show took place during Copenhagen Fashion Week which meant that the fashion industry and the fashion media were present in great numbers. Like only a few others during the fashion week, the school’s show was open to the public, which meant that the big hall was almost full to bursting point. Everything went according to plan, the atmosphere was great, and the graduates definitely made an impression.

Samarbejdsaftale med TRE-FOR

Collaboration agreement with TRE-FOR

The school has entered a collaboration agreement with TRE-FOR, utility company of the Triangle Region of Denmark. The agreement allows the school to address issues related to TRE-FOR in selected courses. In addition, TRE-FOR and the school have initiated a joint artistic development project. TRE-FOR hopes the collaboration will increase the company’s awareness of the potentials of design. The school is thrilled to be able to collaborate with a company with expertise in technology and logistics as well as direct contact to a large number of end-users.

Robots take over the school

In September, the one-day seminar Robots That Care gathered robot enthusiasts from the business community and from education and research at Kolding School of Design. The seminar presented talks on placebo, hybrid materials, thermo-graphic images, and an exhibition of hospital robots. The point of the many different talks was that the development of robots should draw on a wide range of disciplines. Having an all technological approach does not suffice; we must also consider the human aspects. In this respect, Doctor Karen Lund’s talk about placebo research was a thought-provoking reminder of the patient’s own role in his or her treatment. British robot scientist James Auger provoked the audience with his ”Domestic Robots”, high-end design objects for private households which are entertaining, disturbing and socially meaningful all at the same time. Japanese designer Hironori Yoshida presented hybrid materials that could be put to interesting use in future robot design. Finally, researchers and teachers form Kolding School of Design presented suggestions for current and future robot research and design; the latter by exhibiting robots directed at patients before, during and after hospitalisation. The robots are developed by third-year industrial and interaction design students.

Robotter indtog skolen

Collaboration with Israeli art students

Illustration students have collaborated with students from Bezalel Academy of Arts in Jerusalem. The collaboration focused on breaking down cultural as well as geographical boundaries. The Danish students were given the task of illustrating Nehama the Louse, a famous children’s book by Israeli author Meir Shalev. The Israeli students grappled with the equally famous Seven Gothic Tales by Karen Blixen. The project was kicked off in September when Israeli illustrator Orit Bergman visited Kolding. After her thorough introduction to Israeli illustration history, the students were ready to interpret the famous works. Apart from Orit Bergman, Danish illustrator Cato participated in the project. The final illustrations will be exhibited in Kolding and Jerusalem as soon as the Israeli students finish their part of the project.

Master class by international British fashion designer Julian Roberts has conducted a master class at Kolding School fashion designer of Design teaching MA fashion and textile design students about his experimental and intuitive approach to pattern cutting, which has brought him worldwide recognition. The unconventional garment pattern cutting method is called Subtraction Cutting. It is an approach to garment pattern making that incorporates chance discovery, distance, gods-eye views, and the ability to cut fast and inaccurately without too much reference to numbers, fractions or mathematics. The basic premise of Subtraction Cutting is designing with patterns, rather than creating patterns for designs. The name derives from the fact that you reduce space to increase outward shape. – It’s about bringing the traditions into the future and rediscovering them. Subtraction Cutting is most usable for shapes you would not have imagined. If you get stuck, it’s a good method to relax you and become re-inspired – something all designers need, Julian Roberts explains. Having H&M and other major brands on his list of clients is an indicator that the method is also suited for commercial purposes. The method definitely promotes productivity. During the master class, the students were able to produce a staggering 80 creations which were subsequently exhibited at the school.

Tre afsluttede ph.d.-afhandlinger

Kirsten Bonde

Three PhD dissertations

Mette Harrestrup

Tekstildesigner Anne Louise Bang fulgte kort tid efter, da hun i maj forsvarede afhandlingen ”Emotional value in applied textiles – Dialogue-oriented and participatory approaches to textile design”. Det store ph.d.-år blev afsluttet af Kirsten Bonde Sørensen, da hun i november forsvarede ”When designing emerges into strategies – in an organisation and in individuals”.

Local design history returns to the school

84-year-old Helene Holst was a student in the very first class at Kolding School of Design. In September she paid her old school a visit and donated her comprehensive material from her school years. The material is of great historic value to us; not only does it include lots of textile and weaving samples, it also includes school timetables, assignment briefs, and the entrance examination. The material presents a fascinating insight into design education then and now. The school’s library is currently examining the vast material and considers making an exhibition to give contemporary students an idea of the development of the design education. The material will definitely play a role in the school’s 50th anniversary in 2017.

Three PhD dissertations and plenty of champagne in 2011. In April, Graphic Designer Mette Harrestrup defended her PhD dissertation ”From Pictogram to Sensogram – a sensous transformation via phenomenology and pervasive computing”. Mette Harrestrup now holds a position as head of the Department of Communication Design. Shortly after, in May, Textile Designer Anne Louise Bang followed with the defence of her dissertation entitled ”Emotional value in applied textiles – Dialogue-oriented and participatory approaches to textile design”. Anne Louise’s project is an industrial PhD project completed in collaboration with textile company Gabriel. Anne Louise Bang now holds a position as assistant professor at the school. Finally, in November, Kirsten Bonde Sørensen defended her dissertation ”When designing emerges into strategies – in an organisation and in individuals”. Kirsten Bonde’s project is also an industrial PhD project carried out in collaboration with the bank Middelfart Sparekasse. Kirsten Bonde is likewise still to be found at Kolding School of Design where she works as a design consultant for Design2innovate, a large-scale project to promote trade. In the near future, Kirsten Bonde will return to Middelfart Sparekasse to implement some of the services developed during her PhD.

På pension – og dog

Retired – and yet Anne Louise Bang

In 2011, three of our employees went on retirement. Yet, this does not mean that they have left the school entirely. All three of them continue with research projects and as guest teachers. The three near-retirees are associate professor and textile engineer Joy Boutrup, former head of department and teacher of illustration and graphic design Merete Skotting, and head of research Poul Rind Christensen. Each has contributed tremendously to the school, and we are pleased that we are still able to benefit from them, even though it will be to a lesser extent.

Charlotte Bodil Hermansen

The Golden Fur Pin

Kolding School of Design won two out of three categories at the Golden Fur Pin Awards. Kolding School of Design was massively represented with six finalists at the award show this autumn. The competition was divided into three categories, and Kolding School of Design students won two of them. Marie Louise Udby Blicher from Textile Design won the Accessories category, and Charlotte Bodil Hermansen, also from Textile, won the Home Wear category. Charlotte Bodil Hermansen had designed a curtain from mink, fox and various textiles inspired by the sea. In addition, she had designed three cushions that can be combined and change shape using fixed metal rings. Accessories winner Marie Louise Udby Blicher’s presentation was quite a surprise. She had designed a poncho using dyed fox fur. The poncho goes on a car seat, so Marie had a bright red Tesla show up in the middle of the show. Among the Kolding School of Design finalists were also: Brian Frandsen, fifth-year Industrial Design, Mette Gliemann, fifth-year Textile, Lærke Marie Valum, third-year Fashion and Nicklas Kunz, fourth-year Fashion.

Elbiler i Shanghai

Electric cars in Shanghai

For the third year running, students and teachers went to China to collaborate with students from Tongji University. 30 third-year students along with eight master students from the Design Management Programme left Kolding School of Design to solve an assignment by the school’s large-scale electric car project etrans: Develop concepts for the interior layout of electric cars utilising the fact that electric cars are not burdened by space consuming and heavy motors. Also, develop a service design which will help break down the barriers that prevent the electric car from becoming a consumer success. The concepts and prototypes were presented at an exhibition, first in Shanghai and then in Kolding.

DesignCamp 2011 – Feel the power

Bl.a.

DesignCamp 2011 – Feel the Power

The participants in the international DesignCamp 2011 were in for a real challenge: To transform electricity from being intangible and abstract to being not only tangible and concrete but even wonderful. Seven groups comprising 49 design students from USA, Canada, India, New Zealand, Syria, China, Germany, Holland, Finland, Denmark and the UK spent two weeks working intensely on the theme of visualising energy. Supported by researchers and teachers, each of the groups created projects with very individual approaches to one of the great environmental challenges of our time: how do we make average energy consumers more aware of their energy consumption? The two intense weeks resulted in eight exciting projects. Among these the Starshiptrooper and the Turbino, educational projects aiming to create energy awareness among children, the art projects Artoverpower and Excess Energy Experience, and the design object the ElecTree; a small installation resembling a tree with changing branches and colours visualising the actual household consumption.

Parasite design on the Series Seven Chair

Sparks were flying when a group of first-year design students created ”parasite design” on and with Arne Jacobsen’s world-famous Series Seven Chair. The focal points of the student designs were message, location, social context, function, and the every-day integrated in one collective design expression. Elements were added and altered that change our perception of the original chair. The parasites were exhibited at the school and subsequently at the Republic of Fritz Hansen showroom in Copenhagen.

Finanslovstasken

The Money Bag

A few days after the election, fifth-year fashion design student Katja Brünchle Knudsen was invited to the Prime Minister’s Office and was able to experience first-hand the Danish centre of power. She met with Lars Løkke Ramussen, who was Prime Minister at the time, to deliver a secret package: Løkke’s present to his successor Helle Thorning-Schmidt. In Denmark it is customary for the outgoing ministers to give the new ministers a welcoming present, and Lars Løkke Rasmussen had come up with the idea to create a bag from the outgoing government’s finance bill proposal for 2012. He contacted Kolding School of Design to ask if we would play along. So, we asked Katja to design the bag, and with the priceless help of workshop assistants and fellow students, the bag was finished in record time. Taking no chances, Katja caught the train to Copenhagen to deliver the bag to Lars Løkke Rasmussen herself. The Money Bag received a lot of media attention from television, radio and newspapers in Denmark and abroad.

Skolen i Ghana

The School goes to Ghana

This autumn, a group of second-year students had the experience of a life-time when they went to Ghana to create sustainable design in collaboration with Ghanaian students from the university in Kumasi. Farmer’s shoes from old car tyres, sawdust as insulation material, room dividers made from second-hand clothes, and so much more. These were the results of the four-week trip to Ghana which culminated in an exhibition, first in Kumasi and then in Kolding. The Ghana project represents the beginning of a closer collaboration between Kolding School of Design and KNUST university in Kumasi. The project is funded by DCCD, Danish Center for Culture and Development.

Focus on the food chain

Kolding School of Design wishes to attract the best students. Therefore, we have intensified our focus on the food chain, meaning the institutions that typically supply our applicants. In 2011, we expanded our collaboration with a number of design-oriented folk schools and independent boarding schools for lower secondary students including Skals Folk School, The Scandinavian Design College, Vejle Design and Art School, and the folk schools located in Askov and Rødding. Moreover, we have organised the ”Fusion Box Conference” introducing 73 primary school teachers to various design methods. In addition, we continue our successful upper secondary school arrangement where 50 pupils become interns at the school.

Israelske provokationer

Under overskriften ”Materials Materialise!

December I December

Living Lightly

Living Lightly

Kolding School of Design has spent a considerable amount of years focusing on sustainability in all aspects of the design process. The clothes collection Living Lightly represents a significant landmark in these efforts. We asked three designers to include all of our knowledge of sustainability and use this knowledge to design a collection which employs sustainable Japanese polyester and reintroduces grandmother’s dress shields. In the beginning of December, Living Lightly was presented at the Danish Ministry of the Environment with the participation of the Minister for the Environment Ida Auken and at an event hosted by Dansk Fashion & Textile in Herning. The collection and the ideas behind it have been captured in a publication. Please contact the school to receive a free copy.

Hollandsk mesterklasse

Dutch master class

A film disclosing three ways to melt a chocolate rabbit was the first in a series of unusual projects created by Dutch duo Sander & Lernert. In the cross-field between art and commerce they freely, freshly – even impudently – romp discovering new expressions that amaze and disturb. In the beginning of December, third-year communication design students were given the chance to emulate the famous duo: Make a rip-off; imitate one of our works altering three elements. This was the dogmatic master class assignment presented by Sander & Lernert. The challenge resulted in several excellent pieces, among these a short film showing Rector Elsebeth Gerner Nielsen having a thick layer of make-up removed from her face.

etrans ready to send its concepts out into the world

The etrans project results show confidence that the Danes will begin to love the electric cars. Without the electric cars we will not be able to reduce the CO2 footprint to the determined level, and without using their batteries as buffers, green energy will have a hard time finding a dominant role in Danish electricity supply. They are eco-friendly and do not make any noise. They are expensive to buy but cheap to drive. etrans – a user-driven innovation, design and research project – has spent the past three years working to make the electric car known and loved; on fighting prejudices and building interest and knowledge. End 2011, etrans completed its investigations; all of the processing, analysing, testing, and developing came to an end, and the prototypes and design concepts were displayed in a large exhibition entitled ”On the Road”. 15 of the project partners – representatives of business, public organisations, NGOs, and peers – shared their experiences of being part of the etrans project and presented input for the last major part of the project: getting the concepts out into the world. www.etrans.dk will give you all the information you need but here are some key words of what is on the launching pad: sounds for electric cars, keeping in view environment and safety. reports about acknowledged and unacknowledged desires regarding transport / charging / attitude towards electric cars / establishment of electric car fleets / knowledge concerning experiences of car drivers. games for children and adults creating attention and supplying knowledge of electric cars. game for interdisciplinary programmes in high schools highlighting dilemmas, problems, understanding and attitudes. shared car concepts. ideas from DesignCamps and collaboration projects with Tongji University in Shanghai. apps to make the electric car more fun, more clever or more safe. ideas and concrete suggestions for excitement campaigns in companies and municipalities. The ideas are now ready to leave etrans helped along by the many partners who have supported the project; contributed their insights and extracted new knowledge – not only concerning cars and car drivers but also concerning user-driven innovation and the various design methods applied by the project.

etrans is a three-year project funded by the EU, the Region of Southern Denmark, the Danish Enterprise and Construction Authority, and DONG Energy. DONG Energy and additional partners contribute knowledge on an on-going basis and receive input concerning development of specific business areas.

MY SHOE - PERSONAL DREAM SHOES FOR THE REAL WORLD This book displays the result of a collaboration between fifty students from Kolding School of Design, the Department of Product Design, consisting of Fashion, Textile and Industrial Design, and the ECCO shoe company. Prepare for shoes with black-mottled cowlick toes, shoes for mutated six-year-old feet, super sneakers, concrete soles, jazz boots looking the way Miles Davis sounded in the eighties, shoes for Willumsen’s mountain climber anno 2012, shoes as flower leaves and sanitary towels, nostalgic shoes filled with childhood memories, shoes for car lovers, plaited shoes, shoes with wooden soles and Scandinavian light, adventurous shoes, hairy fur shoes – you name it! Some are couture-like and experimental, others commercial and ready for production. SYV TRIN. SEVEN STEPS. GET STARTED ON ELECTRIC CARS – EXPERIENCES FROM FREDERICIA MUNICIPALITY (IN DANISH) Fredericia Municipality, Dansk Transportoptimering A/S, and the project etrans have shown that – all things considered – phasing in up to 10% electric cars into the Fredericia Municipality fleet of cars is indeed possible without adding extra means. Optimising the fleet of cars would also enable the municiplaity to reduce CO2 emissions from internal transport by 20%. This report presents the analysis and front-runner experiences with successfully introducing the electric car.

CHARGING OF ELECTRIC CARS – A GLOBAL STATUS INCLUDING RECOMMENDATIONS AND DESIGN SUGGESTIONS (IN DANISH) etrans research shows that charging is a critical factor for the success – or failure – of the electric car. It is clear that people who would potentially buy an electric car feel that the current charging options in Denmark restrict their sense of freedom. And they are right. Being willing to plan long trips to the extent that you drive along the coast to be able to charge your car in camping areas and marinas or with other electric car enthusiasts does require a certain character. We should be very grateful to these people; without them, we would not have come as far as we have with the electric car. ELECTRIC CAR – A HANDBOOK FOR ELECTRIC CAR AMBASSADORS (IN DANISH) Handbook for electric car ambassadors published in connection with Fredericia Municipality’s establishment of an electric car fleet.
