Für grosses Aufsehen sorgte der „Gübelin – Grosser Preis von St. Moritz“. Anlässlich seines 75. Jubiläums wurde das höchstdotierte Rennen der Schweiz 2014 mit der sagenhaften Gewinnsumme von CHF 150‘150 ausgetragen. Mit insgesamt einer halben Million Schweizer Franken übertraf White Turf alle im Schweizer Rennsport sonst üblichen Preisgelder.
Zu den Publikumsmagneten zählten wieder die weltexklusiven Skikjörings: Mit der höchsten Punktzahl über alle drei Rennsonntage gewann Fadri Casty mit Bergonzi die Credit Suisse Skikjöring Trophy 2014. Nach einem atemberaubenden Finish konnte er sich zum ersten Mal in seiner Laufbahn damit auch den Titel „König des Engadins“ für ein Jahr sichern.

The ‘Gübelin – Grand Prix of St. Moritz’ created a sensation. In 2014, on the occasion of its 75th anniversary, the race with the highest prize money in Switzerland was held, offering a fabulous purse of CHF 150,150. With a total of half a million Swiss francs in prize money, the White Turf surpassed any prize normally handed out in Swiss racing sports.
The world exclusive Skikjöring races will once again be one of the crowd-pullers. In 2014, Fadri Casty won the Credit Suisse Skikjöring Trophy with the horse Bergonzi, achieving the highest number of points on all three race Sundays. After a breathtaking finish he was thus able to assume for one year the title of ‘King of the Engadine’ for the first time in his career.

With this spectacular action, the project originators, Silvio Martin Staub, President and CEO of the White Turf St. Moritz, and the Kulm Hotel St. Moritz with general manager Heinz E. Hunkeler, together with the tourism organisation Engadine St. Moritz with CEO Ariane Ehrat, once again emphasised the innovative spirit of St. Moritz, where winter sports tourism was founded 150 years ago!

Nebst Fussballtrainer Christian Gross und White Turf-CEO Silvio Martin Staub, wagten sich Stars aus der Schweizer Sportszene wie Brigitte Oertli und Franco Marvulli auf das Eis. Doch als Sieger ging mit Mario Cavigelli der Regierungspräsident des Kantons Graubünden hervor. Sein vierbeiniger Partner hiess Buddhist Monk, geritten von Tim Bürgin. Dieses Trio erwies sich im Ziel als unschlagbar. So liess sich das Team bei der Siegerehrung gebührend feiern.

As well as football trainer Christian Gross and White Turf CEO Silvio Martin Staub, stars from the Swiss sports scene, such as Brigitte Oertli and Franco Marvulli, dared to compete on the ice. However, the winner was Mario Cavigelli, the President of the cantonal government of Grisons. His four-legged partner was Buddhist Monk, ridden by Tim Bürgin. The trio proved to be unbeatable and were duly rewarded at the award ceremony.

Araberrennen stehen auch im Jahr 2015 auf dem Programm von White Turf.
arabian retrospective After a period of abstinence the Arab thoroughbreds made a successful comeback on the frozen lake of St. Moritz in 2013, and twelve months later two Arabian races were even run. One of these - the ‘H.H. Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies World Championship (IFAHR)’ remained reserved for female jockeys, the race being won by Pauline Prod’Homme on Phraseur Kossack. The ‘H.H. Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan al Nahyan Listed Cup’ was dominated by Alibaba ridden by Daniele Porcu after a brilliant, explosive final chord. The 2015 programme for White Turf again includes Arabian races.

hürdenrennen hurdle races White Turf ist bekannt für seine Innovationen. Immer wieder gab und gibt es auf dem St. Moritzersee Neuerungen mit grossen Überraschungen für die Aktiven, die Sponsoren und das Publikum. Doch ganz neu kann das Rad nicht immer erfunden werden – und so kam der Gedanke auf, dass bei White Turf 2015 auf etwas Altbewährtes zurückgegriffen wird. Gemeint ist die Wiederbelebung von Hürdenrennen auf Schnee.
White Turf is well-known for its innovation. Again and again there have been and there are new ideas on the Lake of St. Moritz, delivering major surprises for the active participants, the sponsors and the spectators. But it’s not always possible to completely re-invent the wheel – which gave rise to the thought that we should fall back on something tried and trusted for the 2015 White Turf. What we thought of is the revival of hurdle races on snow.
Diese Prüfungen über Sprünge gehörten lange Zeit zum Programm von White Turf. Bekanntlich wurden die ersten Galopprennen auf der Flachbahn im Jahre 1911 auf dem See gelaufen. Es dauerte weitere elf Jahre, ehe 1922 das erste Hürdenrennen durchgeführt wurde. Damals eine wahre Premiere! Mit dem Präsidenten Emil Thoma-Badrutt an der Spitze fand dieses Hürdenrennen nach den Bestimmungen des Schweizerischen MilitärRennreglements statt, schon zwei Jahre bevor es 1924 zur Austragung des ersten Grossen Preises von St. Moritz kam.
For a long time, these tests over jumps were part of the White Turf programme. It’s a well-known fact that the first horseraces took place on the flat racetrack on the lake in the year 1911. It was to take another eleven years before the first steeplechases were held in 1922. A real premiere at that time! With President Emil Thoma-Badrutt at the head, this hurdles race was held in accordance with the regulations of the Swiss Military Racing Rulebook as early as two years before the first ever Grand Prix of St. Moritz was held in 1924.
In der folgenden Zeit wurden regelmässig Hürdenrennen in St. Moritz abgehalten, doch Ende der achtzigerund Anfang der neunziger Jahre des vergangenen Jahrhunderts liess das Interesse der Ställe mehr und mehr nach, sodass die Starterfelder immer kleiner wurden. Grund genug für White Turf die Hürdenrennen nicht mehr ins Programm aufzunehmen. Im Jahre 1994 war es der im Besitz von Heinrich Raschle stehende Schimmel Matejko, der unter Otto Frei das bislang letzte Hürdenrennen auf dem St. Moritzersee gewann.
In the time that followed, hurdles races were held regularly in St. Moritz but at the end of the 1980s and beginning of the 1990s the interest of the stables dwindled more and more with the starting fields becoming smaller and smaller. Reason enough for White Turf not to put hurdle races in the programme any longer. In 1994 it was the grey Matejko owned by Heinrich Raschle and ridden by Otto Frei that won the last hurdles race on the frozen Lake of St. Moritz.
Nun wird erstmals nach 21 Jahren wieder ein Hürdenrennen ausgeschrieben und der Nachfolger von Matejko gesucht. „Wir sehen dies als Bereicherung und Aufwertung für unser Programm. Die in Arosa gestarteten Hindernispferde erhalten bei uns eine weitere Chance“, sagt White Turf-CEO Silvio Martin Staub. Der Start erfolgt direkt vor den Tribünen, danach werden zwei Runden gelaufen. Ein wahrer Publikumsmagnet und neuer Höhepunkt im Programm. Mit einer Dotierung von 20’000 Franken handelt es sich weltweit um das am höchsten dotierte Hürdenrennen auf Schnee.
Now, for the first time in 21 years a hurdles race has again been announced and a successor to Matejko is being sought. ‘We see this as an enrichment and upgrading of our programme. The steeple-chasers that started in Arosa will have another chance here’, says White Turf CEO Silvio Martin Staub. The race will start right in front of the grandstand, before two laps of the racecourse. A real crowd-puller and a new highpoint in the programme. With prize money of 20,000 Swiss Francs this is the most prestigious hurdles race on snow!

anno 1922 Das Meeting auf dem See umfasst wie vor dem Krieg wieder drei Renntage. Es finden erstmals Hürdenrennen nach den Bestimmungen des Schweizerischen MilitärRennreglementes statt. Ein optisch hervorragend galoppierender Future Security stach sichtlich aus dem verbliebenen Zehnerfeld heraus und besass mit den erschwerten Bedingungen auf der ausgesteckten Bahn keine Probleme. Ein überglücklicher Jockey Alexander Pietsch kommentierte später: „Ich hatte auf Future Security sehr früh ein gutes Gefühl und musste nur noch sicher nach Hause reiten.“ Mit Weile-Vorsprung zeigte der Wallach den Gegnern seine Hufeisen und lief der Konkurrenz auf und davon. So besassen mit Winterwind und African Art die Sieger aus den Vorjahren nicht den Hauch einer Chance und gaben sich weit geschlagen, was auch bei Syndic und dem als Mit-Favoriten gehandelten Andreas auf den nächsten Plätzen der Fall war.

The sight of Future Security galloping superbly, the horse clearly stood out from the remaining field of ten, having no difficulty with the tricky conditions of the marked racecourse. His overjoyed jockey Alexander Pietsch commented later: ‘I had a good feeling very early on riding Future Security and really only had to ride him home safely’. With a lead of about ten lengths the gelding showed his opponents his horseshoes and charged away from the competition. And so the winners from the two previous years Winterwind and African Art didn’t have the slightest chance and clearly had to concede defeat, as was the case with Syndic and the cofavourite Andreas in the subsequent places.

besitzer Ein Event wie White Turf bedeutet für den Veranstalter einen grossen finanziellen Aufwand, bis er tatsächlich zustande kommt. Die Einnahmen rekrutieren sich aus Sponsorengeldern oder aus den Eintrittsgeldern der Zuschauer, um nur zwei eminent wichtige Standbeine zu nennen, damit der Anlass Realität werden kann. Ihr Scherflein dazu tragen aber auch die Besitzer der edlen Rennpferde bei. Und zwar sowohl direkt als auch indirekt. So müssen Nenngelder bezahlt werden, damit ihre Vollblüter eine Startberechtigung erhalten, was White Turf direkt zukommt. Indirekt ist es die Unterstützung der Besitzer dafür, dass sie überhaupt Rennpferde halten, um auf allen Bahnen auf dem Globus mit diesen Vierbeinern starten zu können. Plant nun ein Besitzer einen Start für sein Rennpferd in St. Moritz, dann darf der Aufwand nicht unterschätzt werden. Dies beginnt bereits Wochen und Monate vorher, wenn die Route festgelegt wird, um den Vollblüter topfit im Engadin an den Start zu bringen. Dafür bedarf es nicht nur des kontinuierlichen Trainings am eigenen Stall, sondern häufig auch eines Vorbereitungsstarts, um später mit bestmöglicher Kondition anzutreten. Diese Vorbereitung erfolgt häufig auf einer Bahn in Frankreich oder Deutschland, was entsprechend weite Reisen nach sich zieht.

owners Auch der Aufwand um mit einem Pferd nach St. Moritz zu kommen, ist wegen der Lage in den Bergen immens. Ein bei winterlichen Bedingungen oft beschwerlicher Transport muss erfolgen. Dies gilt für Trainer, Pferdeführer und Reiter, die oft gemeinsam mit dem Pferd ins Engadin reisen. Vor Ort bringt der Pferdeführer das Pferd auf den gefrorenen See. Dort wird es vom Trainer gesattelt und der Jockey erhält letzte Anweisungen über die einzuschlagende Taktik, bevor er sich auf den Rücken des Vollblüters schwingt. Was für ein Aufwand! Doch genau der sollte sich bei White Turf im Siegfalle ganz besonders lohnen. Dieser Aufwand lässt sich für einen Besitzer in Sekundenbruchteilen vergessen, wenn das eigene Pferd das begehrte Ziel in Front liegend erreicht. Was dann folgt ist eine grenzenlose Ausschüttung von Adrenalin, das jedes Besitzerherz höher schlagen lässt. Es gibt sogar Besitzer, die behaupten, dass es gerade bei White Turf besonders schön und einmalig ist, ein Rennen zu gewinnen. Und dies lässt jeden Aufwand zuvor vergessen.
An event like White Turf means great financial expense before the event actually comes about. Event income is obtained from sponsorship money or from entrance fees from spectators to name just two funding pillars of the utmost importance that allow for this occasion to become reality. Yet the owners of these noble racehorses also contribute their mite both directly and indirectly. Entry fees have to be paid so that their thoroughbreds are eligible to race, and this goes directly to White Turf. Indirectly it is the support the owners give simply by keeping racehorses in order that these four-legged wonders can compete in races on racecourses all across the globe. Now if an owner plans to put his racehorse on the starting line in St. Moritz, the cost and effort of doing this should by no means be underestimated. This already begins weeks and months beforehand when the route by which the thoroughbred is to be brought in top-fit condition to the starting line in the Engadine is determined. Not only is constant training at the home stables required to this end, but a preparatory race is often needed to turn up on the day in best possible condition. This preparation takes place at a racetrack in France or Germany, which
of course entails correspondingly long journeys. Even the expense of having to come to St. Moritz with a horse is immense, due to its location in the mountains. Transportation, which is often difficult in wintery conditions has to be carried out. The same is true for the trainer, groom and jockey all of whom will normally travel with the horse to the Engadine. At the location the groom brings the horse onto the frozen lake. There it is saddled by the trainer and the jockey is given final instructions regarding the tactics to be adopted before he mounts his thoroughbred ride. What a cost and effort! But at White Turf it’s precisely this that makes it particularly worthwhile if you win. In fractions of a second an owner can forget all the expense and effort if his own horse reaches the coveted finishing line out in front. What follows is a boundless release of adrenaline which makes any owner’s heart beat faster. There are owners who even say that it is a particularly beautiful and unique experience to win a race at White Turf, and this leads to forget any level of effort and expense beforehand.
