Our Community Center...where Boca Grande comes together. Our Mission is to serve the interests and needs of the Boca Grande Community in collaboration with Lee County
hardworking volunteers provide the backbone of our many and diverse offerings. Without their help, the community center would not be able to provide the services that we do. Volunteers are very special people: they are always ready to lend a hand to any task, no matter how big or small. We cannot say “Thank You enough times to these wonderful people.
Our Dedicated Volunteers
The Friends of Boca Grande Community Center are fortunate to have a large group of very dedicated volunteers who are willing to put much time and effort into the projects and programs we offer to the community. Whether it is reading to the Munchkins, stuffing envelopes, serving on program committees, or helping out with special events, these
Summer Camp
Since Dee Wheeler, the “fun expert”, first ruled the halls of the community center in 1975, island children have eagerly anticipated their summer camp experience. Today, the Lee County and Friends staff work together to provide campers with a safe, supportive experience to make new friends and learn new skills. We provide the opportunity for children to participate in many traditional summer camp activities, as well as specialized in-depth programming. Fitness has been incorporated into the camp curriculum through a
“Hearts & Parks” themed program. Through the generosity of Jack Damioli and the Gasparilla Inn, our campers are able to swim twice a week at the Inn’s spacious beach club pool. Campers also have the opportunity to travel twice weekly to educational and “fun” field trips throughout the Gulf Coast of Florida. None of this would be possible without the continued generosity of The Boca Grande Woman’s Club, which makes a substantial annual donation to offset the cost of field trips and transportation.
The Halloween Carnival The Halloween Carnival for many years was a Boca Grande School event. When the school closed in 1963, the carnival shut down as well. Revived in 1975, the carnival is a safe and happy event for island children. The costume contest, cake walk, ghoulish games, and haunted house make this indeed “spooktacular. Egg Hunt Spring in Boca Grande is heralded by the popular Egg Hunt, now in its thirtieth year. Each child receives a basket and in separate age groups collects as many eggs as time permits. Adults enjoy cheering their children, grandchildren, and those of their friends on this happy occasion.
Special Events
The Bike Parade The Annual Bike Parade, an island tradition for nearly a quarter of a century, brings smiles to the faces of all. Residents and visitors of all ages decorate their bikes and golf carts and ride down the Bike Path from Fifth Street to the community center. This event is a favorite of participants and spectators.
The Munchkins
In 1985 The Boca Grande Preschool Program was organized by a group of volunteers at the community center. To make the program financially viable, nonprofit tax-exempt status was needed so that people could make charitable contributions to support the program. Tax-exempt status was granted to the newly-formed Friends of Boca Grande Community Center on October 27, 1986, at which time the funding for the Boca Grande Preschool was assumed by the Friends and renamed the Munchkin Preschool Program.
For 25 years, our Munchkin Preschool Program has placed emphasis on developing the total child while nurturing each child’s potential, building upon successes and mastered skill. The focus of the program is placed on a balance of fun, creative, hands-on activities, as well as a traditional, educational curriculum that enriches the growing mind and body. The continuity in the program is critical to a child’s progress. Since its inception, there have only been three teachers, and our current instructor, Laquata
Meade, has been serving our children for 13 years. Miss Laquata’s warm, caring environment assists children in developing personal, social and self-help skills and encourages her children to recognize the importance of these skills. Approximately, 325 children have built a vital learning foundation for future success through our Munchkin Preschool Program.
The Reference Room
From its beginnings in 1986, the Arthur A. Houghton, Jr. Reference Room has grown as the “hub” of the community center. The founding committee developed a collection of reference books, magazines, and newspapers, as well as a photocopier. In 2000, the Lee County Library System took over operations of the Reference Room and provided a full time Librarian, Toni Vanover, to staff the room. Since then, the number of library card holders has increased to 1,215. Library cards are free to property owners, renters (6 months or more), island workers and children who attend school on island. Reciprocal borrowers’ cards are free for library card holders of several neighboring library systems and college libraries. Three month visitor cards are $15 and one year non-resident cards are $60.
The latest renovation and expansion of the Reference Room was completed in 2008. Today the library has twelve computers with high speed Internet access, self check machine, wireless 24/7 and a small collection (7,000 items) of adult and juvenile DVD’s, audio books and books are available for checkout for library card holders. The Reference Room has 8,500 items available for checkout and 1.3 million items available from our other library system branches. Monthly circulation for the Room averages 2000 to 3,500 items. March and April have the highest checkout with 5,000 per month. Approximately 1,000 to 2,000 people use the computers and wireless every month. Attendance in 2010 exceeded 20,000.
The Boca Grande Reference Room & Library never sleeps. When the library is closed or you are out of town, go online to library.leegov.com. Electronic resources are available with your library card including our eBook, music and audio book collection, Download Depot; Value Line; Morningstar; Historical New York Times (full text 1851 – 2006); EBSCO Host Master File Premier (full text for nearly 1,700 periodicals); and PowerSpeak (a language program).
After School Programs
From the days when Dee Wheeler and Betsy Joiner started the program to the adventurous days of Leslie Coleman and Anne Wingate, to the raucous days of Joe Wier, Trey McCallon, and Pat Gratz, to the present day of Angela Colosimo, Jennifer Goslowski, and Lyndsey Burdick, our island children have been well taken care of after their school day is finished. Angela uses a blend of recreational, art, and enrichment activities to provide a wellrounded experience for the children. The program offers flexible, developmentallyappropriate play and a successoriented curriculum by encouraging physical, social, emotional, and intellectual growth and positive feelings of self-worth of each child. The competent and caring professional staff provides a warm, secure environment designed to encourage problem
solving, individual expression, and decision-making where children can respect and enjoy each other in a group setting. Activities are experience based and are interesting and challenging. Afternoons consist of homework assistance, arts & crafts, cooking/ baking, sports, games, as well as special events. FUN DAY & SPRING BREAK ADVENTURE When scheduled school in-service days and holidays do not correspond with moms and dads days off, Friends offers Fun Days and Spring Break Adventures. These programs are designed to be an extension of our after-school program. We provide recreational activities to demonstrate personal and social behavior and encourage participation in activities for enjoyment, challenge, selfexpression, and communication.
BOCA BUDDIES FUN NIGHTS Friends makes sure that parents have a safe and enriching choice for their children when school is out or they just need a break. Youth programs director, Angela Colosimo designed her Boca Buddies around the idea of providing children ages 5-13 the opportunity for an evening of amusement and excitement. Games, crafts, dance, pizza and a special project highlight the evening, while giving parents a needed break. Local restaurants are seeing some Boca Buddies parents taking advantage of an evening to enjoy a night out.
Adult Programs
Literature Forum These seminars focus on writers whose works are considered likely to stand the test of time. Created in 1991 and led for several years by Joan Zabarsky, a Steering Committee currently plans each year’s programs. Writer’s Workshop Wordsmith, an early outgrowth of the Literature Forum, offered writers thoughtful criticism of their work, either on assigned topics or as excerpted from a larger self-selected piece. Recreated two years ago after a lapse of several years following the death of Joan Zabarsky, the renamed Writers’ Workshop adheres to similar practices and principles. Sleuths Introduced in 1991, the Sleuths read and discuss detective novels that offer quality writing and the
probability of engendering lively discussion. Jean Meanwell, Patricia Lombard, and Rosemary Bowler select the books and lead the discussions. Concerts Friends, with the sponsorship of Northern Trust Bank, have offered free indoor and outdoor concerts for many years. Programs cover a wide range of musical offerings from blue grass and jazz to country, classical, and swing band. Lifelong Learning Residents and visitors are encouraged to stretch their brains through Lifelong Learning lectures, courses, and seminars. Established in 2007 with a start-up grant from Gulf Coast Community Foundation of Venice and a partnership with Pierian Spring Academy of Sarasota, Lifelong Learning annually offers a variety of challenging learn
ing experiences in keeping with Friends’ mission “to serve the needs and interests of the greater Boca Grande community.” A Lifelong Learning Committee evaluates each program and welcomes suggestions for future programs from the community. Films and Documentaries Since 1995, we have offered a varied and vibrant selection of films in the community center auditorium. Foreign & International films are shown every Tuesday evening to show the perspectives and many challenges facing people in every part of the world. We are also proud to show some of the most noteworthy documentary films ever produced. Thursday evenings are reserved for the newest release in the movie industry and Saturday afternoon movies are of the family and children’s variety.
Community Center Renovations
The Friends of Boca Grande have been instrumental in providing donor-generated funds for major renovations at the center. In 1994 the Friends assisted Lee County by providing $470,000 to help guild a new multi-purpose wing, complete with storage, restrooms and a fitness room. The Reference Room and Parks & Recreation Department offices were reconfigured, a new outdoor pavilion was added, and new tennis courts and a basketball court were constructed. New air conditioning units, drop ceilings, new lighting,
and indoor décor completed the changes for the first big renovation. In 2000, the Friends allocated $252,281 toward a total reconstruction of the original auditorium, which was built in 1925. And in 2007, the Friends helped fund improvements to the Reference Room, Woman’s Club Room, and restrooms. Throughout the years, generous donations have provided close to a million dollars on renovation costs so that your community center is the “crown jewel” of the Boca Grande community.
