IN LOVE, ENGAGED OR MARRIED? CHILDREN? PETS? IN LOVE, ENGAGED OR MARRIED? CHILDREN? PETS? I have a fabulous wife and beautiful daughter (15) and son (13), not forgetting our black Labrador Boo (9 months).

I am happily unmarried, with two wonderful children, a pair of young ladies aged 12, and as far as I know, we have no pets.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?

To be honest, I have made a few, but shutting down the L9FF1 for a full 24 hours was perhaps the best yet!

At a very young age, I started as ship’s boy on board one of our own vessels on the Rhine before working in the hospitality industry, where I learned to recognise what other people need. I then went into the taxi business; I drove thousands of kilometres crisscrossing the city a bit like a cowboy.

WHAT WOULD BE YOUR FIRST ACTION AS PRIME MINISTER?

WHAT ADVICE COULD YOU GIVE TO NEW PROFESSIONALS IN THE BUSINESS?

I would like to tackle the many errors made by the political parties and scrap all those parties I consider as being too small or unnecessary. And I’d simplify the rules.

I would above all recommend that they remain open-minded, look for a good sponsor and advisor, and really listen to their advice. And of course never lose sight of their reasons for first joining the business, and in all cases, put Dutch business first. At the end of the day that approach is good for us all, and you are most likely to enjoy the home match benefits.

WHAT WAS YOUR BIGGEST PROFESSIONAL BLOOPER?

WHO INSPIRES YOU? WHY? There are so many people who inspire me, but generally speaking I am inspired by anyone who has a positive attitude: there are enough grumpy people on the planet already!

BESIDES YOUR PARTNER, WHO WOULD BE YOUR IDEAL DINNER PARTNER FOR AN 8-COURSE MEAL? I am not really interested in an eight-course meal but I would like to go out for a meal with Eddy Vedder of Pearl Jam and then off to a bar for a few beers. What a fabulous evening out -!

WHERE IS THERE ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT IN THIS BUSINESS? Despite the fact that many things are well organised, we need to think more practically in the offshore sector. To quote my mother: “we should stop complaining, and get on with it!”

WHAT WOULD YOU SPEND YOUR LAST € 100 ON? I am not completely sure. I am very impulsive in a number of things, and generally have a sense of what is needed; as you are undoubtedly aware, men live by their intuition, and feel in our waters what has to be done.

WITH WHOM WOULD YOU LIKE TO SWAP PLACES FOR A WEEK, AND WHY? With John Fentener Van Vlissingen. To see what it is like to be board chairman of such a large group of companies, in business and private life. And to see what it is like to grow older, in that way.

FINISH THIS SENTENCE: I AM COMPLETELY HAPPY WHEN … … my children can do whatever it is they want to do; big smiles all round. In business and in my private life, when plans come together, when my hobby is financed and built in ten countries around the world and as a result far more people can live more healthily and happily than they could in the past.

5 idea being that walking onto an offshore structure should be just as easy as crossing the road. The Ampelmann platform is based on the same technology as that used in flight simulators in the aerospace industry. Flight simulators are equipped with six hydraulic legs that are capable of making six different types of movement. “In the Ampelmann, this technology was expanded to include motion sensors and an intelligent control system that measures even the tiniest movement of the ship, caused by the waves, and subsequently compensate for those movements, on the platform. The result is a platform on a ship that remains entirely stable whilst at sea. From the motionless upper deck and a telescopic gangway, personnel can safely transfer to and from an offshore structure,” explained Van der Tempel.

‘PORT OF ROTTERDAM MUST REMAIN THE BEST IN THE WORLD’ THE FUTURE OF THE OFFSHORE INDUSTRY LIES IN THE HANDS OF ROTTERDAM’S INVENTORS

MARKET LINK-UP The Ampelmann systems mean that personnel can safely transfer from a floatel or ship to for example a drilling rig or other workplace. Photograph: Ampelmann.

For the next few decades, innovation (in the maritime sector and offshore) is the key word for the Port of Rotterdam. With that in mind, Incubator YES!Delft and the Port of Rotterdam have joined forces to promote innovation in the port.

Ellen Lengkeek In the new Port Innovation Lab, opened on the RDM site close to Heijplaat on the left bank of the Meuse, existing and new problems are being converted into scalable business models and start-ups, that could make all the difference for the port itself and operators far beyond. Effectively, RDM is Rotterdam’s answer to the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven, that is already achieving considerable advances. The site of the for-

mer Rotterdamse Droogdok Maatschappij has already developed over the past few years into a ground-breaking knowledge centre and training complex, where businesses, students from senior secondary vocational education and university students are brought together. Appropriately enough, is is also the place where the Delftbased company Ampelmann once preceded this latest batch of ‘Professor Brainstorms’.

INCUBATOR YES!Delft is one of Europe’s most successful incubators. It inspires students, professionals and academics to make the move into business. More than one hundred companies have been started under the auspices of YES!Delft, including Ampelmann Operations, a company with its own production

line on the RDM site. The Ampelmann system, originated by Jan van der Tempel and researchers at the Delft University of Technology, led to a breakthrough in the offshore sector. Together, they developed a six-legged hydraulic platform with swell compensation, that has massively simplified and accelerated access to offshore facilities. Today, more than thirty different Ampelmann systems are available on the market, and Ampelmann Operations B.V. has expanded activities into Singapore. The Ampelmann gangway compensates for the natural motion of the sea. Van der Tempel came up with the idea during an offshore wind conference in Berlin, where the principle of a gangway was born, designed in such a way that it compensates for natural sea swell. The invention was named after the small figure on traffic lights at pedestrian crossings in Berlin, the

The Port Innovation Lab offers the crucial leg up during the first phase of establishing a business. “Direct access to the network offered by the port, knowledge institutions and YES!Delft in combination with programmes like the Port Innovation Lab mean that start-ups are quickly able to identify where they can find the best link-up to the market. In this way, they can go in search of customers all the sooner, and accelerate their own development,” explained Wouter de Bruijne, Commercial Director of YES!Delft. Rotterdam is the largest port in Europe and one of the most important ports in the world, transhipping some 450 million tonnes, every year. Innovation is crucial to maintaining this leading position. As a result, the Port Innovation Lab is taking steps to make the Port of Rotterdam cleaner, smarter, safer and more efficient. Even small-scale innovations can make a huge difference. “Take for example the company OCRS, that has developed a biodegradable spray for removing oil from water,” suggested De Bruijne.

WORLD’S FIRST FLOATING BLUETEC TIDAL PLATFORM READY FOR POWER GENERATION be subjected to tests. This platform is aimed at the global market. It can be transported as a sea container, and installed anywhere in the world, to supply clean electricity to remote areas and small islands, thereby replacing the expensive and polluting energy supplied by diesel generators. A major advantage of tidal energy is its predictability and consistency, that will together deliver stability to local electricity networks. The fragile electronic equipment is safely housed in the floating hull, where it remains easily accessible for inspection, maintenance and repair. This is in fact the first example of a complete, integrated tidal energy system for the market.

that the platform can be transported and installed anywhere in the world.

The BlueTEC tidal platform will be producing its first electricity before the summer.

COMBINED EFFORT

On 9 April last, the mayor of Texel, Francine Giskes, formally christened the ďŹ rst BlueTEC platform for tidal energy, on the dockside in the Port of Den Helder. The oating platform, that houses an underwater tidal turbine, is soon to be installed to the south of the island of Texel, where it will supply clean electricity to the Dutch electricity grid. This first BlueTEC is a plug-and-play demonstration platform intended for remote locations throughout the world such as islands in Indonesia, the Philippines and the Pacific Ocean. It also represents the start of the further development of tidal platforms with even higher capacity, that will be used in large numbers, in tidal power farms. “We are delighted to have achieved this fantastic milestone: our first floating demonstration tidal platform,â€? explained Allard van Hoeken, Head of New Energy at Bluewater, during the naming ceremony. “This day brings us one step closer towards our target of marketing an

all-in-one platform for tidal energy, thereby providing a clean, local and infinite supply of energy to the world.

The project makes use of the unique knowledge and experience of an impressive list of partners, the majority of them active in the offshore oil and gas industry. The list includes Bluewater, Damen/Niron Staal, Van Oord/Acta Marine, Vryhof Anchors, TKF, Tocardo, Schottel Hydro, NIOZ, Tidal Testing Centre, Nylacast and the Port of Den Helder. The project expects support from the Waddenfonds and possibly the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO).

MODULAR ADVANTAGES PREDICTABILITY In the weeks following the christening ceremony, the platform will be installed off the coast of Texel, and connected to the Dutch electricity grid – with the aim of producing the first electricity before the summer. The floating platform will remain in place producing energy for a number of years, during which time a range of different turbines will

The platform is built according to Damen’s modular ship system – a flexible product that can be applied to the construction of a wide spectrum of vessels, and dredgers, breakwaters, ferry boats and barges. The platform consists of three standard modules, the size of sea containers. The combination of the efficiency of container transport and simple installation ensures

FACTS How does it work: BlueTEC stands for Bluewater’s Tidal Energy Converter. The TEC is a floating platform installed at sea, that houses tidal turbines below the water. The flow of water causes the turbines to rotate, in turn driving the generator and producing electricity, which is then supplied to the electricity grid on land, via a power cable. Dimensions: The BlueTEC Texel platform is 24 metres long and 2.40 metres wide, and consists of standard-sized containers (40’ + 2 x 20’ length, 8’ by 8’ wide). Output: Based on a typical current location, the platform with a 200 kW turbine will be able to supply electricity to 200 Dutch households. In remote locations, this volume of electricity could have a hugely positive impact for residents of small islands, removing their dependency on the supply of fuel for cooling and lighting.

FUTURE OF HELICOPTERS UNCERTAIN DUE TO ARRIVAL OF SUPPORT VESSELS Den Helder Airport, the airport from which hundreds of employees of offshore companies fly from and to platforms, work and drilling rigs every day, has growth ambitions. However, the so-called multipurpose support vessels – with on board maintenance workshops, hotel capacity and the Ampelmann lift crane – appear to be restricting the deployment of apparently relatively costly helicopters. Does this mean an end to the ambitions for growth?

Jan van de Nes

Newcomers to the market are windfarm support vessels for maintenance on and assistance during the installation of wind turbines on the North Sea. There is now also a similar vessel for the oil and gas sector (Wagenborg’s Kroonborg). This multipurpose support vessel has been chartered by NAM for maintenance on its small gas production platforms with no fixed crew and without overnight accommodation facilities. And that is not all. On behalf of Vroon Offshore Services (VOS), the VOS Sugar and VOS Star are currently under construction. These socalled walk-to-work vessels literally enable crew members to walk to their workplace via the Ampelmann wave compensating crane systems. These vessels may soon be deployed from Den Helder for work on offshore oil and gas platforms in the North Sea.

EAGLE EYES

Investments are still being made in both new vessels and helicopters. The question is whether the growth in helicopter flights will continue following the increased deployment of multipurpose vessels.

These developments are being monitored with eagle eyes, by the aeronautical sector. They are already the subject of discussion at Den Helder airport, albeit informally. The airport management for example revealed that they have not yet had an opportunity to make any formal announcements, but the developments are the subject of debate among helicopter company crews. After all, as various people have suggested, “they will undoubtedly have an effect on flights to satellite platforms”. At the same time, despite their ground-breaking designs and installations, these vessels are not always deployable. “They clearly have limits in terms of wave height, visibility and wind strength” is the tenor of reactions at the airport.

Commonly-heard comments suggest that additional crew members or equipment (often unexpectedly) have to be transported to a specific platform, and at that time of course there is no second ‘hotel ship’ available to carry out the work. In other words, a helicopter still has to be deployed for this additional task.

COST FACTOR The operating costs for these multipurpose vessels are also not yet known. Once those costs are announced, it will be possible to compare them to those of helicopters. “Clearly, a vessel of this kind with its own on-board workshop offers certain advantages as compared to a helicopter, which itself is excellently capable of taking on the transport task”, but if additional people have to be flown in, or unexpected equipment needs arise, that cannot wait for the arrival of the next supply vessel, the helicopter once again becomes essential. Despite perhaps lower operating costs of a multipurpose vessel … Does the wind energy sector with its narrow turbine masts make any difference? “The new windfarms have in fact led to more and more work,” suggested one helicopter pilot who did not wish to have his name printed. Both for helicopters and for these specialist vessels. “In the German sector, it is mainly helicopters that are used for depositing the service personnel.” Only time will tell which option is the most cost-effective for the operators. And at the end of the day, nothing is truly new. “For years, Gaz de France has been operating a vessel similar to that now being deployed for the first time by NAM. And still the number of flights has not really fallen.” For the time being, then, it does not look as if the arrival of the new vessels has put the wind up the helicopter operators. But the question still remains whether the airport’s growth ambitions will have to be downscaled …

EXPANSION FOR GATE TERMINAL On Rotterdam’s Maasvlakte, the Gate terminal recently started building the new LNG break-bulk infrastructure for its installations

“Our goal is to ensure sustainable logistics through the transition from fuel oil to LNG as the gold standard for shipping. We also wish to further strengthen our position as the European LNG hub, explained Allard Castelein, chief executive of the Rotterdam Port Authority. The aim of break-bulk is to break large-scale LNG deliveries down into smaller units (small-scale LNG). This in turn makes it possible to distribute and use LNG as a cleaner fuel on seagoing vessels and in industrial applications. Gate terminal takes delivery of the LNG, stores the product, transfers it to other tankers, and turns it back into gas for delivery to the Northwestern European gas transport network. Dick Meurs, Managing Director of Gate terminal explained, “Gasunie, Vopak and Gate have closely joined forces in developing an innovative LNG break-bulk concept, to expand the capacity of Gate terminal as an LNG hub, and to enable our customers to

supply LNG as a cleaner fuel for transport, shipping and industrial applications.

HARBOUR BASIN The new infrastructure is under construction alongside Gate terminal. The port authority is building a new harbour basin with quayside that is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Gate will build the LNG installations, including mooring and loading facilities for bunkering ships and smaller tankers, to enable LNG bunkering in the Port of Rotterdam and in turn allowing further distribution throughout Northwestern Europe. The Gate terminal is the first Dutch LNG import terminal, and is located on both sides of the Maasvlakte Oil Terminal, close to the North Sea. The jetties are in the newly-excavated Nijlhaven, on the Nieuwe Waterweg side, while the storage tanks are on the other side of the MOT, by the Yang-

DEN HELDER AIRPORT OFFICIALLY REOPENED

HUISMAN’S FIRST ‘HYBRID BOOM CRANE’ NEARS COMPLETION In April 2015, Huisman, the worldwide specialist in lifting, drilling and subsea solutions, started with the final factory acceptance testing of its first 900mt Rope Luffing Knuckle Boom Crane, now called the ‘Hybrid Boom Crane’, at the quayside of the Huisman China Production facility in Zhangzhou. The crane was fully assembled in the main assembly hall and upended by Huisman’s 2,400mt Quayside Crane. In the coming weeks, the crane will undergo an intensive factory acceptance testing program, after which it will be shipped to Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan, South Korea. The crane will then be installed, commissioned and tested on board Subsea 7’s Seven Arctic.

DELAY TO OUTFITTING OF PIONEERING SPIRIT The world’s largest ship, due to be outfitted in the port of Rotterdam, will be finished later than expected. Delays have occurred involving the installation of the twelve 65 metre-long beams that are part of the megaship’s crane system. The ship is intended for removing large oil and gas platforms at sea. The first assignment, on behalf of SBM Offshore and the Canadian energy supplier Talisman, involving the dismantling of the Yme platform on the North Sea, will now be carried out later in the summer.

Following extensive work, the partly renovated platform of Den Helder Airport was officially reopened April 23th. Thanks to the renovations Den Helder Airport is now better equipped for passenger transport to European offshore cities and windfarms in the North Sea.

5 MILLION DUTCH HOUSEHOLDS POWERED BY WIND ENERGY By 2023, windfarms at sea should be supplying five million households with electrical power. The Cabinet has opted for a limited number of large windfarms, rather than larger numbers of small windfarms, since this choice is cheaper and will help to maintain sufficient space for other users on the North Sea. Two areas were previously earmarked for windfarm installations off the coast of North and South Holland. The Cabinet has further investigated five areas, by means of a feasibility study, that were possibly suitable for construction of windfarms. On the basis of these studies, only those areas off the coast of North and South Holland remained eligible. The Cabinet now intends to add a narrow strip to the previously-earmarked areas off the

North and South Holland coast. For the most part, the windfarms will be installed at least 22 kilometres (12 miles) off the coast. Only in two areas off the coast of South Holland and North Holland will a narrow strip of wind turbines be installed closer to the coastline, but still at least 18.5 kilometres (10 miles) from shore. How many wind turbines will be installed will depend on the number of megawatts (MW) per turbine. The minimum size is 4 MW, and at present, the largest wind turbines generate 8 MW. The fewer MW per turbine, the more individual turbines are needed to generate a specific volume of power. There is a formal procedure for the definitive allocation of the areas in question, which was started at the end of April 2015. The final decision will be taken in 2016.

“Thanks to renovation of the platform, over the next few years we will be better able to serve new growth markets, thereby considerably strengthening our position as the international centre for offshore activities in the North Sea,” explained Conny van den Hoff, Director of Den Helder Airport. Over the next few years, Den Helder Airport aims to attract new markets. Thanks to a recently announced permit, the airport can continue to grow to 27,000 aircraft movements per year. Den Helder Airport is currently in negotiation with a number of interested providers of scheduled flight services. Scheduled and charter services are on the cards. Den Helder Airport also aims to focus on helicopter transport for maintenance personnel to the ever growing number of windfarms in the North Sea. Thirty businesses are based at Den Helder Airport. These companies offer 500 direct jobs.

RENOVATION The extensive renovation of the three oldest aircraft hard standings, undertaken by Ballast Nedam, lasted one and a half months. The old asphalt was recycled, and reused in a durable, low-maintenance platform. The renovated surface now consists of seamless, non-permeable concrete, surrounded by new asphalt. Following the renovation, the entire platform was completed with new marker lines, so the airport once again meets the very latest requirements.

The most important goal of the collaborative venture IJPOS in the seaport of IJmuiden is to ensure that major projects are undertaken sustainably. Sustainable working practice for example means that the ecological footprint in executing a major project is kept as small as possible. This can be achieved by calling in local businesses, so that manpower and equipment are not forced to be transported over huge distances. IJPOS was established to contribute to that goal.

THE EPOS OF IJPOS

Jan van de Nes One example is the construction of two large windfarms in the North Sea; the North Sea windfarm off the coast at Egmond aan Zee (Shell, Nuon) and the Prinses Amalia windfarm, (Eneco) off the coast at IJmuiden. Both were built from the port of IJmuiden, and many locally-based businesses contributed to the construction work, via the collaborative venture IJPOS. IJmuiden Port & Offshore Services (IJPOS) consists of a group of service companies based in IJmuiden’s (open) port area. All companies affiliated to IJPOS are located

close together, and together represent onestop shopping for the offshore oil and gas industry, windfarms and shipping. The variety of services available is extensive, from hydraulic systems to towage, from waste processing to the execution of subsea projects and from steel structures through to electronic and electrical installations. Nontechnical services such as the supply of

WET GAS UNDER CONTROL In the framework of cost saving, NAM is taking measures to alter gas production on the North Sea. As part of this programme, drying installations on a number of satellite platforms are due to be removed. The wet gas extracted at these platforms will no longer first be dried, but will be transported to a central manned platform where drying is subsequently undertaken, before the

dried gas is sent ashore in Den Helder. As a result, the satellite platforms will eventually be converted into unmanned units, thereby reducing production costs to such an extent that continued gas production remains viable.

Jan van de Nes

hydrographic and navigation equipment are also on offer. Another example is the construction of a new, larger sea lock at the entrance to the North Sea Canal, a project set to be started later this year by Rijkswaterstaat. The existing lock has become too small for the ever larger ships wishing to sail to Amsterdam. The companies affiliated in IJPOS have

joined forces to be able to play a meaningful role as local parties, during the preparation, realisation and maintenance phases, once again based on the principles of sustainability. Thanks to the fact that these companies can offer a wide range of knowledge and skills, and ensure very short delivery lines, the ecological footprint of the construction project is massively reduced.

One key cost factor is the transport of ‘wet gas’. Wet gas is responsible for the formation of rust and hydrates in the costly pipelines, as a consequence of which gas is normally first dried before being pumped from the production platform to the collection point. However, this approach calls for the manning of the installation, and that too is a costly affair. In response, ONEgas (the collaborative venture between NAM and Shell UK on the North Sea) switched to the treatment of wet gas, in the summer of 2014. Three manned production platforms normally transport the gas dried by themselves to the central platform K14 (the platforms in question being

L13, K15 and K81). Over the next three years, these three platforms will be converted and simplified, enabling wet gas to be transported to K14. The first platform to be tackled will be L13. The central platform K14 has itself been entirely converted and prepared for the new work procedure. 2250 metres of pipeline were replaced and relaid, 850 coils were installed and 750 new valves. Because the treatment installation has been relocated from the suction side of the compressor to the delivery side, the wet gas can now be received on K14 under low pressure, before being pumped to shore under high pressure (between 70 and 75 bar).

INNOVATION IN VIEW

4 QUESTIONS TO … MARC SPEIJER What are the latest developments and trends in the offshore sector? Who are the people behind them and what are there motivations? Groenervaren.nl, the platform for knowledge sharing about sustainability issues and innovation in the maritime sector aims to find out with four questions.

1) WHAT IS VAN GALEN MARINE’S RELATIONSHIP WITH THE OFFSHORE SECTOR? “Van Galen Marine is an experienced company that designs, builds and maintains climate control installations of which many are used in the offshore sector. Climate control installations offer comfort and security

ABOUT GROENERVAREN Groenervaren is the source of information for and from maritime professionals in the form of an independent, online platform focused on sharing knowledge about innovation, substainability, trends, tips & tricks within the maritime sector. Subjects covered by Groenervaren range from propulsion systems, via regulations and legislation, through to waste substances, fuel economy and grants and subsidies. www.groenervaren.nl

to crews on board ships, and workers in the offshore industry. The reliability and availability of these installations are absolute requirements, and that in turn calls for the best knowhow from system integrators, like Van Galen Marine.”

2) WHAT EXPERTISE CAN VAN GALEN MARINE ADD TO THE OFFSHORE INDUSTRY? “Van Galen’s strength lies in designing climate control installations, not only HVAC (heating, ventilation en air conditioning) but also drinking water, waste water and ballast water treatment systems and of course HVAC control systems, to ensure that all installations function perfectly and can be managed (remotely), backed up by onshore support. Our experienced engineers can tackle any energy question, and are able to deliver the best result in terms of high performance and availability. The engineering department is also able to translate engineering requirements into 3D models before moving on to actual execution. This process reduces the time needed for installation work to an absolute minimum. Not only for new-building projects but certainly also for retrofits, our engineering expertise is a clear advantage.”

‘Energy saving and CO2 and NOx emission reduction call for innovative ideas and actions’

3) HOW DOES VAN GALEN MARINE STAND OUT FROM ITS COMPETITORS? “Alongside our solid engineering qualities, the operating team and maintenance technicians, with a staff of 225, we are still a family business. As a result, we have a clear focus on our clients and construction partners. We always work towards a long-term relationship. It is not without reason that our core values are dedication, trust, respect and quality.”

4) WHAT IS VAN GALEN MARINE’S VISION FOR THE FUTURE IN TERMS OF SUSTAINABILITY AND INNOVATION IN THE OFFSHORE SECTOR? “Ever stricter national and international regulations for offshore sustainability are playing a growing role. More and more part solutions are being delivered to the market. Our vision for the future is growth in demand for integrated solutions in which power generation and power consumption (including climate control installations!) will be the answer to achieving energy savings (OPEX) and reducing CO2 and NOx emissions. Both those goals call for innovative ideas and above all actions, now and in the long term.”

LOENEN REPAIRS BV, GMS BV AND MRC TECHNIEK ROTTERDAM BV JOIN FORCES ‘OUR GOAL IS LONG-TERM QUALITY’

Alexander Harderberg (l) and René Loenen.

The companies Loenen Repairs bv, GMS B.V. and MRC Techniek Rotterdam B.V. have announced plans to collaborate more closely. All three will be joining forces to offer greater efficiency to their clients, worldwide. The overriding objectives are quality and rock-solid, broad-based service provision.

Ellen Lengkeek MRC Techniek Rotterdam B.V. anywhere in the world, are the basic principles of our company philosophy. They are principles we grew up with, as family businesses. We are convinced that specifically a philosophy of that kind, with quality as number one priority, will guarantee a solid position on the market. Even in less favourable financial conditions. And we have been proven correct,” suggested René Loenen. “We have respect for our customers, and prefer to turn down a request for service if we are unable to provide 100% quality. All of our customers receive full and respectful attention, and joining forces means that we can provide our services even more rapidly.”

ENDURES: FROM PROBLEM OUTLINE TO PERFECT SOLUTION In the maritime world, much use is made of metal. The composite materials produced using metals must be resistant to the corrosive effect of the environment, in particular (sea)water. Protective coatings can help extend the useful life of equipment, and at Endures in Den Helder, knowledge, experience and access to a huge scientific knowledge network are available, for advising businesses and institutions on the issues of corrosion and coating.

Jan van de Nes Now an independent operator, in the past, Endures was part of the organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) tasked with the special assignment of advising the Royal Dutch Navy on corrosion prevention and protection for fragile equipment on board warships. Over time, the field of knowledge expanded to cover all maritime objects, ranging from pleasure craft and all types of seagoing and inland shipping vessels and offshore installations for oil and gas exploration, through to sustainable forms of energy supply for Dutch and foreign companies. The expansion then continued into the transport sector (road, rail and air transport) and potential applications in the drink and sewer sectors. After all, in all these applications too there are pipelines, pumps, filters and valves, all subject to corrosion due to the effects of water, chemicals and other (combinations of) factors. The nine men and women at Endures operate a mas-

This network, linked to years of practical knowledge and experience, means that as they arise, corrosion problems can be directly analysed, before recommendations are issued about the best conceivable solution or prevention method.

als. Our staff always start with a thorough analysis of the problem outline, and use tests and practical studies to identify the cause of the problem. In close collaboration with the relevant disciplines within Endures and with our network partners, we then come up with the perfect solution aimed at correcting the problem now, and preventing a similar problem recurring in the future. The aim is to extend the useful life of the materials or installations for the customer and as a consequence to save that customer massive expense.” The objects in question range from complete vessels and installations right through to the related maintenance tasks. Endures is not only involved in investigating problems presented by clients. “We of course prefer to work together with businesses and institutions who design and develop products when they are in the design phase,” explained metallurgist and corrosion material expert Hans Christ BSc. Endures likes to be involved right from the start in elaborating products, many of which consist of a wide range of different materials. “We at Endures know which metals react to the influence of water and the influence of chemicals and microorganisms, in given compositions,” explained Christ. Designers and product developers can use that knowledge, thereby creating a product that performs optimally in what is already known to be an aggressive environment. As a consequence (therefore), the useful life is longer than could be achieved without prior involvement of Endures. The name indeed says it all: Endurance by Research ...
