IN LOVE, ENGAGED OR MARRIED? CHILDREN? PETS?
I visited the swimming pool with my girlfriend. I dived underwater and grabbed her bottom. When I resurfaced, the welcome I received was a slap around the face! It turned out there was another woman in the swimming pool wearing the same swimsuit …

COMPLETED JOB FOR AEOLUS Van Oord’s offshore transport and installation vessel Aeolus recently completed the installation of 43 wind turbines on the Eneco Luchterduinen windfarm. According to the schedule, all of these turbines will be fully operational by July. CEO Pieter van Oord explained, “Although the weather conditions were not always favourable, the Aeolus did a fantastic job on its first project.” The Aeolus was fabricated specially for Van Oord, and measures 139 metres long and 38 metres wide. The vessel is equipped with a large crane capable of lifting more than 900 tonnes, and two smaller 20-tonne cranes. WAVE OF REDUNDANCIES AT ROYAL IHC: MORE OFFSHORE IN SLIEDRECHT The Dutch Shipyard Royal IHC with head offices in Sliedrecht, has announced mass redundancies before the end of this year, with dramatic consequences for hundreds of families in the Drechtsteden cities and the Albrandswaard.
Ellen Lengkeek In total, the redundancies will affect 487 staff with a permanent contract and a further 1127 insourced employees, from the flexible workforce. The news was announced at the shipyards in Kinderdijk, Sliedrecht and Krimpen aan den IJssel. In the future, global player IHC Sliedrecht, which currently employs some 3000 people, will focus mainly on offshore activities. IHC intends to only continue shipbuilding at the yards in Krimpen aan den IJssel and Kinderdijk. The entire shipyard in Sliedrecht is set to close.
LOWER WAGES Although rumours of the announcement had been heard at the company for months, the news came as a severe blow to the workforce. There will unavoidably be many forced redundancies. The trade union organisations FNV and CNV responded angrily, because IHC has transferred a great deal of work to cheap foreign suppliers, over the past few years. According to senior staff, the company can achieve savings of up to 20 percent on the con-

maximum of 75 crew members. The jack-up vessel is equipped with four legs, each 81 metres long and 4.5 metres in diameter, and is capable of operating in water depths of up to 55 metres. The four legs, two alongside the crane and two behind the bridge, are raised during sailing. Once on location, the legs are lowered to the seabed. On its legs, the vessel is entirely stable, allowing wind turbine components to be installed more easily, since waves no longer influences the vessel’s movements. To the accompaniment of much flag waving and celebration, the vessel was officially commissioned last year by the wife of the mayor of Rotterdam, Aboutaleb. The next challenge facing the Aeolus is the construction of the Gemini windfarm, where 150 wind turbines will be installed in water depths of up to 35 metres, 55 kilometres beyond the coast at Schiermonnikoog. struction of a ship, in lower-wage countries. IHC is already actively building in China, Croatia and Bulgaria, and the company has now announced the need to reorganise as a result of insufficient orders due to the low oil price.
LARGEST ORDER EVER Just two years ago, the company was awarded its largest order ever; the construction of six pipelay vessels for the Brazilian oil industry. All will be deployed for the development of oil fields at a depth of more than 2500 metres. This order, worth around € 1 billion, ensured jobs for 4000 people at IHC, above all at the yards in Krimpen aan den IJssel and Kinderdijk, and among supply companies. This job will be completed by mid-2016, so that after that time staff will also have to be shed. The company was established in 1943 as a result of a merger between seven shipyards, the predecessors to which have been active in shipbuilding since the seventeenth century. On 20 June last year, IHC was given the Royal title, and has since that time been known as Royal IHC.

WHO FOR?
The Peterson companies operate on a broad business range. In the North Sea region, they above all serve the offshore industry, where many operators have handed over the entire supply chain to them. The heart of the service is the SNS Pool of supply vessels from various shipping operators deployed by Peterson across the southern North Sea. The company also operates major storage locations and warehouses where products are kept for all the participating parties to ensure timely deliveries to platforms and vessels. For unexpected supply services and the transport of offshore workers, Peterson can call in the SNS Pool Aviation and the Air Logistics Centre. As well as in Den Helder, Peterson also has locations in Rotterdam, IJmuiden, Zwolle, Maastricht, Eemshaven and a number of other international centres. Peterson Recruitment was established for the recruitment and selection of skilled personnel. This company announces vacancies and takes on the complete recruitment and selection procedure, ranging from interviews and the related administration right through to medical examinations, suitability testing, contracts, pay-rolling (salary calculation and payment), possibly pension provisions and even internal and external
training, safety training courses and outplacement programmes.
FULL SERVICE Peterson Recruitment has a huge amount of knowledge and experience that can also be made available outside the Peterson companies. “We are able to offer full service to other businesses, confirmed Account Manager Recruitment Julian Bor. He explained that businesses from practically any industrial sectors are welcome to outsource their entire recruitment and selection process to Peterson Recruitment. “Including actual employment; after all, we take the staff into our service, and second them to the company looking for the specialists in question. For our staff, this situation offers the advantages of a fixed contract, because we select staff according to the required background, knowledge, skills and competences. For our clients, the Peterson approach means that they are not stuck with permanent personnel. They are delivered the professionals they need when they need them and where they need them. The result is a win-win situation for everyone – both employers and employees. Peterson Recruitment operates worldwide. “We recruit from every

EXPLOSION-PROTECTED ARTICLES 24/7/365 EN ROUTE TO PLATFORMS The market leader in explosion-protected electronic equipment and systems, Electromach-Stahl in Hengelo, has built up a wealth of experience with 24/7/365 accessibility for the offshore sector, in Aberdeen. The results are so positive that similar logistic services are now also to be provided from Den Helder.
Jan van de Nes Manufacturing company Electromach-Stahl itself does not offer 24-hour distribution to oil and gas installations on the North Sea. The company’s core business is to supply a wide range of electrical components, systems and total solutions for explosionhazardous locations. For the distribution of the ATEX materials offered in its catalo-
gues, the manufacturer calls in the services of specialist companies. In Den Helder, the task has been entrusted to 24/7/365 days a year on-call service provider and maintenance contractor Multimetaal.
EFFICIENCY Commercial Director Arthur Hulsebos explained that Multimetaal “is a market leader for inspection, repair, maintenance and modification work on complex installations for the offshore sector and other clients”. The company has more than demonstrated its added value as a powerfully service-oriented player. The organisation and staff at Multimetaal are specialists in relieving their clients of their concerns, by delivering a very complete range of mechanical, maintenance and installation services, with a reputation on the market based on safety, quality and efficiency. To ensure that every aspect is implemented as efficiently as possible, Multimetaal prefers to deliver the full process, from project management via purchasing, manufacture, offshore installation and logistics right through to maintenance engineering, preventive and corrective maintenance, testing, certification and the turnkey handover of the product or project; and everything, of course, according to the
L. to r. Wilko Lok, Johan Beumer and Arthur Hulsebos following the signing of the cooperation agreement in the hall of the Multimetaal headquarters.
customer’s wishes. Deputy Director of Electromach-Stahl, Johan Beumer, explained that precisely this work approach, in tandem with rapid – even hotshot – deliveries made for example via the nearby Den Helder Airport, led his company to call upon Multimetaal to include Electromach-Stahl ATEX materials in its product range, for direct delivery to the offshore-related businesses in the region. “Many staff at Multimetaal are already used to working on the platforms where our equipment is needed, and as a consequence, the logistic administration at Multimetaal is perfectly equipped to make these deliveries quickly and precisely.” One other key factor for the distribution process at Electromach-Stahl is the permanent 24hour availability of the Den Helder-based business for all offshore operators. Regional Sales Manager for ElectromachStahl, Wilko Lok, added that the more than 43 years experience acquired by Multimetaal in the offshore industry represents an added bonus. “They know all the platforms and how to reach them. They also have contacts with the logistic specialists and are conversant with all the regulations – in particular those relating to explosion protection – making them our ideal partner in the logistic process.” Without a single reservation, Lok also praised the reliability of the Den Helder-based business when it comes to sticking to agreements.
COLLABORATION On 10 June, Hulsebos and Beumer, in the presence of Lok, signed a cooperation agreement. Before the signing ceremony, the
Hengelo-based manufacturer had supplied its stock of explosion-protected material to the Multimetaal warehouse. “We can deliver on demand within two and a maximum of 24 hours,” explained Hulsebos. “The aim of both organisations is to limit possible downtime, so the customer can concentrate on its core activities.” “That is what it’s all about!”, concluded Beumer.

This year, AE Sensors will be celebrating its 25th anniversary. Cees Edelman, father of current owner Harry Edelman, started the business in 1990, in the cellar of his home. A quarter of a century later, AE Sensors has long outgrown its home base and now occupies well-equipped and complete business premises on the Jan Valsterweg in Dordrecht. It was no foregone conclusion that Harry would end up in the business. A degree in Business Studies at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam clearly suggested other plans; until he too caught the technology bug. “I decided to take a leap of faith, and immersed myself in the organisation. I soon acquired a great deal of knowledge, from practice.” AE Sensors supplies, develops and manu-
factures sensors and systems for the digital and analogue measurement of a wide variety of quantities. “Vibrations, weight, pressure, force, position and inclination; anything can be measured in physical quantities and units. Our systems are therefore used in a huge variety of sectors, ranging from truck building to the maritime industry. For a company like ASML, we supply extremely precise length

measurements to the nearest nanometer of resolution, while for drilling rigs, we are working on applications that have to be completely indestructible. In other words, our workforce needs to be well informed about a whole variety of disciplines. Our package of services is broad but at the same time highly specialised, while innovations in the technology sector are constantly being introduced, in rapid succession. Today, in even the simplest car, you may easily find one thousand sensors. We remain in close contact with our suppliers, in order to keep up and keep ahead. We regularly discuss all the latest developments, with them, and we operate our
AE Sensors always has the knowledge and products to hand, to come up with a measuring solution. And if a product is not included in the standard range, a suitable product or the ideal solution can soon be developed and manufactured, in-house. To make that possible, AE Sensors has its own test and calibration area, and a mechanical workshop where alterations can be made and small products manufactured. “We have also made considerable advances over the past few years, in terms of electronics and software development. We can now deliver complete systems on a turnkey basis, whereas in the past we concentrated only on separate components. And we are constantly on the move. We have a great deal to offer our clients.”

HELMACAB: FOR THE FULL RANGE OF CABLES Helmacab Holland BV, specialists in cables for on-board power and communication, pride themselves on their ability to supply a complete range of cables for the maritime, industrial and utility sector, delivering tailor-made, coded services and contributing valuable and carefully considered advice.
Matthijs Daniels Helmacab Holland BV, based in Schelluinen on the outskirts of Gorinchem, right alongside the A15 and A27 motorways, is an active partner for installation operators. Service provision was born from the company’s own experience, and the demand for good-quality cables. Current co-owner Willem Botter told us all about it. Helmacab Holland was established towards the end of the last century, emerging from a maritime installation business, based in Har-
dinxveld-Giessendam. “The then owner of the installation business regularly went in search of suitable cables. At a trade fair, he spoke to a representative of a company based in Finland, asking whether he could purchase cables from them, and perhaps become distributor for the Netherlands and Belgium,” explained Botter. “He started by buying a batch of cables for himself, but was almost immediately visited by other installation engineers wishing
to purchase sections of cable from him. That started the ball rolling, and led to the addition of cutting cable sections to length, as a form of customer service.” Helmacab Holland was the first company in the Netherlands to sell cables to the maritime sector, cut to length. And as Willem Botter went on, that remained a unique selling point for the business, eighteen years later. “Once a new vessel has been fully measured out, we know exactly how much of what type of cable is needed. We then supply cable cut to size, including labelling and coding for easy connection.” As Willem Botter explained, “We deliver cables cut to size, including labelling and coding for easy connection.”
QUALITY The Finnish company, with which Helmacab Holland has been collaborating literally since it was established, is the cable manufacturer Helkama. The name Helmacab stands for Helkama Marine Cable. “Effectively, we are mainly wholesalers for cables,” suggested Botter. “The cables themselves are of excellent quality; quality that is not always guaranteed from other brands. We see perfectly eye to eye with Helkama.” Helmacab Holland always maintains a considerable stock of cable, and is able to make fast deliveries, any time. “Throughout the Rotterdam region within one day. Our motto for this region is: order today, in house tomorrow.” The range of products supplied by Helmacab is continuously evaluated and expanded. Whenever a customer comes to us with a problem or question, we at Helmacab consider the possibilities for producing a suitable solution. “Wherever specific wishes or requirements are presented, we immediately set to work. For example, we recently launched a drag chain application on the market. Drag chain cables are in constant movement and are now available from us, with a shipping inspection label.”
VALUABLE ADVICE Because the new premises in Schelluinen have plenty of storage space, Helmacab can always guarantee rapid delivery.
Helmacab Holland, however, clearly wishes to profile itself as more than just a distribu-
tor. “When we receive an order, we always first ask what the requested cables are to be used for,” explained Botter. “We often come across cables that are not suitable for their intended application. When we know what the client intends to do with the cable, we can offer the best advice. At the end of the day, that advice can save money, time and a great deal of problems. We recognise the value of offering suitable advice, thereby establishing a sound, long-term relationship with our customers.” Having been established in HardinxveldGiessendam, Helmacab Holland for years operated out of Gorinchem. Eighteen months ago, larger new premises were purchased in Schelluinen, just on the outskirts of the city. This central location for the Netherlands, with ‘all mod cons’ also offers more storage space than the old premises.

15 ned operation. NAM believes that working with flexible maintenance teams on floating workshops combined with hotel vessels like the Kroonborg will result in the necessary cost savings.
GAS AND OIL ARE RUNNING OUT
PORT SET TO CONTINUE
The vacant Buitenveld site will house two new offshore businesses in 2016.
During the conference about the Port of Den Helder, senior NAM executive Ante Frens reported that the 2500 wells sunk in the nineteen seventies are starting to deliver ever less oil and gas.
Jan van de Nes Frens explained that between 2025 and 2050, the offshore companies operating from the Netherlands would be faced by fundamental changes. “The wells are running out and we will only be able to keep
the fields operating by introducing innovative techniques and saving on costs.” Work has been underway on dismantling platforms since 2011, and more and more platforms are being converted for unman-
Nonetheless, Den Helder intends to continue investing in the offshore industry. Based on the demand for dockside space, the port authority will be opening its doors to two new businesses in 2016, on the now vacant Rijkswaterstaat site, that is currently in use for storing concrete channel piling. The NV Port of Den Helder will also be taking possession of the former Naval site (Buitenveld) – that has been unoccupied for some time. Instead of a new marine barracks, this site will house two new to be established offshore companies. In total, eight companies have registered their interest in a location in Den Helder. Four of them can already be accommodated with the other four possibly taking premises in the new inner port.
TIDAL POWER STATION IN TEXEL ROADS The Den Helder-based business Bluewater has designed a tidal power station. The system links a propeller driven by underwater currents to a turbine for generating electricity. Once anchored, on location the system will transport the generated electricity to a shore station via cables.
Jan van de Nes Bluewater describes tidal energy as clean, safe and reliable. Here the word reliable relates to the operation of the turbine, which is continuous unlike in wind turbines, for example, that stop whenever there is a break in the wind. Tidal energy is a form of hydro-
kinetic power generated by the passage of seawater and converted into electricity. The greatest challenges facing Bluewater are the installation of the turbine(s) in the sea – at the end of the day, the movement matches the ebb and flow of rising and falling tide,
WIND TURBINES TO REPLACE OIL AND GAS Some thirty years ago, Den Helder welcomed the offshore oil and gas industry as the replacement for the downturn in employment opportunities in sea fishing and the Royal Dutch Navy. The next phase is already emerging on the horizon, namely the dismantling of production platforms in the southern North Sea. This phase is expected to last until 2050. Beyond that time, Den Helder hopes to have switched to windfarms. Port Director Piet Hein Kolff looked to the future at the offshore conference North Sea Offshore, in June. In his estimation, there will be more and more opposition from the public to the use of wind turbines off the coast of South Holland. The result will be the construction of hundreds of wind turbines in a farm approximately 40 kilometres off the coast, between IJmuiden and Den Helder. This farm will be of particular interest to the Port of Den Helder and Den Helder Airport, suggested Kolff. He believes that Den Helder will be able to make a major contribution to both the construction of the farm and the maintenance work on the turbines.
STEERING COMMITTEE WIND ENERGY Artist’s impression of the BlueTEC with a single turbine.
as a result of which the turbine blades turn in alternating direction – and the maintenance of the system on location, that must be undertaken at the lowest possible cost. The outcome of these challenges is the so-called BlueTEC-platform (Bluewater’s Tidal Energy Conversion platform). The first tidal turbine was installed in the Wadden Sea, close to the NIOZ dock on Texel, in June.
The first Steering Committee for the continuous learning line demand-based education (offshore) wind energy was recently held at the TU Delft. Organised by the Kenniscentrum Wind op Zee (Centre of Excellence Wind at Sea) and made up of market-leading businesses and organisations from the wind energy sector, the steering committee aims to promote wellorganised education based on demand from businesses operating in practice. The aim: to train well-qualified personnel for the (offshore) wind energy sector.

SEMINAR ON LONG-TERM EMPLOYABILITY IN THE OIL & GAS AND MARITIME INDUSTRY On Thursday 11 June 2015, in collaboration with the IRO, the NPDI and the NoordHolland Noord Development Corporation, MediWerk organised the seminar Long-term Employability in the Oil & Gas and Maritime Industry. The weather was in fact perfect for an enjoyable day out on the beach, but nonetheless the seminar was a success, wellattended and with valuable contributions from those present. In practice, the medical officers at MediWerk regularly speak to employees facing weight problems and suffering from irregular mealtimes and sleep patterns. Those employees who fail to follow the advice and health guidelines from the medical officer find themselves facing problems later on in their career due to ill health, because they
can no longer comply with the requirements in law and regulations for offshore working. “One of the greatest challenges for the sector is the ageing working population. As people become older, the physical burdens of the work become more troublesome. There are also a number of other developments in the oil and gas and maritime industry such
as the ability to comply with the ever stricter requirements imposed by the NOGEPA on employees and employers for allowing people to work offshore, and the ever tighter legislation surrounding shipping. All these factors serve as important grounds for bringing employers, employees and the organisation involved with the problems of Long-term Employability, to examine the opportunities, obstacles and above all the examples from practice of how employees can best be deployed to ensure that they can continue to deliver a valuable and productive contribution in the long-term and maintain that capacity, suggested Maarten van Duijn, Chief Medical Officer.
LOOKING TOWARDS THE FUTURE
Chief Medical Officer Maarten van Duijn, “We are looking at practical examples of how employees can best be deployed in order to continue to deliver a valuable and productive contribution in the long term, and maintain that capacity.
Entering into dialogue with the various stakeholders, backed up by scientific facts, was the ideal approach for helping professionals achieve a more long-term employability policy, in practice. During the seminar, Vanessa Riethmeister, epidemiologist at Shell, and Frank van de Werff, HR Manager and project manager Long-term Employability at Royal IHC, among others, presented the findings of their studies. Frank van de Werff, Royal IHC, chose as the central question for his MBA: What is the effect of managers on the working capacity of individual employees? In a pragmatic approach to ensuring further support from senior management, and by focusing attention on the needs of employees, he has attempted to implement a long-term employability policy. He above all pointed out that in a period of retrenchment, an unstable market and the recently announced job cuts at Royal IHC, it is important to not be carried away with
current events, but to above all look towards the future.
BETTER SLEEPING PATTERNS In the framework of Healthy Ageing, Vanessa Riethmeister presented a study undertaken on behalf of Shell into the continued employability of an ever ageing offshore workforce. Remarkable in her study was that on the tenth and eleventh day, employees tended to suffer a dip, which led to a study into sleeping habits. The starting principle was to help employees sleep better, a factor which automatically influences long-term employability. The definitive conclusions of the study will be announced shortly. Shell will then investigate what further steps it will be taking. Finally, she also asked how human behaviour can be influenced. Study, policy and strategy are all well and good, but if an employee refuses to believe in them, the approach will never succeed. Behaviour change is very difficult to influence. Scientific studies have however proven that behaviour can be influenced by a series of small, less obvious changes. Vanessa Riethmeister offered simple but effective examples, such as the use of smaller plates. Frank van de Werff suggested making healthy food cheaper and imposing heavier taxes on fatty foods.
THREE ASPECTS At the end of the day it is all about three things: awareness of personal health, the level of drive and inspiration for work and the organisation. It is certainly an art but absolutely not impossible to succeed in all three areas. In the autumn of 2015, the seminar will be followed up with a Masterclass on Long-term Employability. For a detailed report of the seminar and the scientific findings, that are soon to be published, visit www.mediwerk.com.

GINA KROG UNDER WAY TO THE NORWEGIAN CONTINENTAL SHELF The Gina Krog is the largest launch jacket ever built by Heerema Vlissingen, one of the shipyards of Heerema Fabrication Group (HFG). Completely fitted out and ready for installation, this jacket for Statoil & Partners, which weighs more than 17,000 tonnes, set sail for the Gina Krog field on the Norwegian continental shelf at the end of June.
Heerema Vlissingen won the Engineering, Procurement & Construction contract for the Gina Krog launch jacket and the associated pre-drilling wellhead module in February 2013. The record-breaking launch jacket was loaded onto the transport barge at the end of March, less than 17 months after its construction. On 19 June, it majestically left port and embarked on the voyage to its final installation destination, the Gina Krog field in the central part of the North Sea.
VITAL STATISTICS The Gina Krog launch jacket weighs more than 17,000 tonnes. It has a footprint of 60 x 50 metres and the top of the jacket measures 40 x 30 metres. The jacket is 142 metres high. The pre-drilling wellhead module, which is not scheduled to leave until after the jacket has been installed offshore, will be used to drill wells before fitting the top deck. This module weighs 265 tonnes. The Gina Krog field is a gas, condensate and oil field that is located in the Norwegian central part of the North Sea, approximately 30 kilometres from the Sleipner field. The Gina Krog field will be developed from a ‘fixed’ platform in a water depth of 116 metres and connected to the Sleipner facilities to allow the gas to be exported. The oil will be transported by tanker.
BUOY MEASURES WIND AND SEA CONDITIONS Fugro has installed a measurement buoy in the Borssele wind region. This buoy, which was commissioned by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency, will allow Fugro to measure wind and sea conditions in the future wind farm locations. The wind speed will be measured by laser beams emitted from the buoy. Wind farm developers use the data to calculate the expected yield of the new wind farms that are to be constructed in the Borssele wind
region. In addition, the buoy will collect data about wave heights and sea currents. The measurement results will be published each month via offshorewind.rvo.nl.
FILM TIP Rotterdam documentary maker Stephan Warmenhoven filmed the construction of the Maasvlakte 2 harbour and industrial area for seven years, resulting in Van zand tot land (From sand to solid land). The film - about depositing sand and stones in the sea to create an additional twenty square kilometres of new harbour and industrial land for Rotterdam; the political and administrative preparations at (local) government level; contracting customers and battling the elements at sea - focuses strongly on what the Dutch do best: creating new land in the sea. In addition, the Maasvlakte 2 project had
