IN LOVE, ENGAGED OR MARRIED? CHILDREN? PETS?

Married for 18 years to Mirjam, and together we have two fabulous lads, Tim (14) and Sem (10). And a rabbit in the back garden.

Back in love. No children, no pets. No time ... WHAT WAS YOUR BIGGEST PROFESSIONAL BLOOPER?

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? While studying I had a number of part-time jobs from peeling flower bulbs through to repairing handheld telephones. After graduation, my first job was with Verhaar Omega, the company that at the time went by the name J. Verhaar Lzn.

In my last job, I completely blew a major budget forecast. I had assumed twelve months, but invoices arrived every four weeks. At the end of the year, one more big payment came in that had not been budgeted for; but we had already closed the books on the financial year.

WHAT ADVICE COULD YOU GIVE TO NEW PROFESSIONALS IN THE BUSINESS?

kilometres north of Groningen. This twin project (known as Gemini, and owned by NPI, HVC, Van Oord and Siemens) is being built by Van Oord on behalf of Buitengaats CV and ZeeEnergie CV. The Gemini offshore wind farm has been recognised worldwide as one of the largest offshore wind farms ever built. The first steps towards completing this farm that is set to supply 600 MW of power were taken in 2013. The farm will consist of 150 Siemens wind turbines, each generating 4 MW. As socalled Balance-of-Plant contractor, Van Oord is responsible for the complete engineering, procurement and construction of the entire wind farm, as well as all electrical infrastructure. For this project too, two offshore substations and one (in this case) onshore high voltage station will be installed. Van Oord is responsible for all cables, and (as is the case at Eneco-Luchterduinen) will be supplying the vessel that will transport and install the wind turbines. The Gemini project is due to be completed in 2016.

MASSIVE GROWTH OF WIND ENERGY ON THE NORTH SEA

INVESTMENT

The Eneco-Luchterduinen transformer platform in the port of Antwerp.

The North Sea continues to deliver ever more ‘renewable’ energy and consequently more employment opportunities. Although the installation of wind turbines and production platforms is undertaken from several different ports – in the same way that electricity cables are brought ashore at different locations – according to expectations, the maintenance of these installations will primarily be carried out from Den Helder. And in Den Helder, people are closely monitoring the growth of wind energy on the North Sea.

Jan van de Nes Eneco, with its Eneco-Luchterduinen wind farm 23 kilometres off the coast at Noordwijk, is most advanced in terms of project implementation. This month, offshore specialists Van Oord will be installing the 900-tonne OHVS or Offshore High Voltage Station. This unit will collect all the electrical power generated by the 43 wind turbines that make up the park, and will transform the

incoming 33 kV (kilovolt) supply to 150 kV. The resultant electrical current will then be transported to shore via a power cable more than 25 kilometres in length. The cable comes ashore close to Sassenheim, where it is connected to the national high-voltage grid via the 150 kV switching and transformer station installed at that location. Van Oord will be installing the 24 metre-long,

23 metre-wide and 16 metre-high transformer building and sleeping and accommodation facilities for the maintenance personnel prior to the installation of the wind turbines themselves. The turbines will be fabricated by the Danish company Vestas, and will be mounted on their foundation piles by Van Oord. For the design, construction and installation of the transformer station, main contractor Van Oord has subcontracted a separate consortium known as FICG, made up of Cofely Fabricom (a subsidiary of GdF/Suez), the Belgian steel supplier Iemants based in Arendonk and the engineering firm CG, responsible for the highvoltage components.

TWINS Two identical wind farms are also currently under construction alongside one another, 85

A new ship has been built for the offshore installation of all the components. The vessel in question, the Aeolus, completed in 2014, measures 139 metres long, 38 metres wide and is fitted with a crane with a lifting capacity of 990 tonnes. Van Oord also issued the order for the construction of a new cablelay vessel, in mid 2013, that was completed in 2014. This vessel, the Nexus, is 123 metres long, 28 metres wide and is fitted with a 5,000-tonne carrousel. The Nexus will be used for installing export cables that connect the wind farms to the electricity grid on shore, as well as the so-called inner array cables that link each of the turbines together. The Gemini park has been described by the American press agency Bloomberg as ‘the largest investment ever in renewable energy’ (with the exception of the even more expensive hydro-electrical power stations).

BRENT DELTA OIL AND GAS PLATFORM TO BE DECOMMISSIONED

CHALLENGING TASK IN THE NORTHERN NORTH SEA This year, Shell is set to start on the impressive task of dismantling its Brent Delta oil and gas platform in the northern sector of the North Sea, off the coast of the United Kingdom. Work has already been underway on this mammoth task since 2007. At least 300 studies have been carried out to ensure the safe and environmentally-friendly decommissioning of the platform.

FACTS & FIGURES

Ellen Lengkeek 400 experts from 180 organisations as well as 1000 trained offshore staff and a selection of onshore engineers have all been involved in the project. According to Shell, it will be the largest project undertaken on the North Sea, and is set to serve as an example for other decommissioning operations around the world, in the future. The Delta platform is one of the four platforms in the Brent oil and gas field discovered by the British-Dutch oil producer Shell in 1971, that started producing oil five years later. According to financial experts, ‘The decision to decommission the platform ties in with the announcement by Shell that it would be cutting back on investments to the tune of 15 billion US dollars. The oil price has fallen steadily over the past few quarters, leading

The Brent Delta platform.

many oil operators to work below cost price.’ At the same time, Shell has been making preparations to shut down the platform after decades of service, for a number of years.

PIETER SCHELTE The transport vessel Pieter Schelte* that put into Rotterdam’s Maasvlakte in January to be finished with a view to carrying out this task, will be deployed for the first time in dismantling the Brent Delta. The 382 metre-long and 124 metre-wide ‘work vessel’ with its double bow is to be completed in the Netherlands, and deployed in the decommissioning of offshore structures in the North Sea. The ship was specially designed for the installation and subsequent removal of large oil and gas platforms such as those in the Brent field.

legs, all of which will be taken away by the Pieter Schelte. Particularly remarkable is the fact that the topsides of the platform – that at 300 metres is as high as the Eiffel Tower in Paris – is due to be removed in one piece. “Once the decommissioning programme has received formal approval from the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC), the metal will eventually be taken to a specialist business in Britain’s Teesside,

RECYCLING The Brent field was discovered in 1971, and production got underway five years later.

where 97% of the material will be reused or recycled,” explained a spokesperson for Shell. At present, the North Sea is home to some 470 platforms which according to reports in the Financial Times are due to be decommissioned over the next thirty years.

In total, Shell will be removing 23,500 tonnes of steel mounted on massive support

The Pieter Schelte (*read the article, page 21) is due to remove the topside – the section protruding above water – in a single lift.

• The first platform installed was the Brent Bravo, followed by the Brent Delta, Brent Charlie and Brent Alpha. The first three are mounted on a concrete pedestal. Only the support structure for the Alpha was made from steel. The Brent Spar, a floating oil storage tank, at which shuttle tankers moored before transporting oil to the terminal in Sullom Voe, was also installed in the Brent field. • Production on the Brent Delta was halted in 2011. Brent Alpha and Brent Bravo were shut down in November 2014. Production from the field continues via the Brent Charlie. • The joint owners of the field are Shell UK Limited (50 % owner and operator) and Esso Exploration and Production UK Limited (50 % owner). • The Brent field covers 115 miles (186 kilometres) and is located in 140 metre-deep water, approximately 150 km northeast of the Shetland Islands. • The field was discovered in 1971 and started production in 1976; initially oil and subsequently also gas production. • Brent is one of the largest oil and gas fields in the North Sea. This fact makes the decommissioning of four manned platforms, more than 140 wells and 28 pipelines extremely complex. • Production fell sharply in 1990, due to major maintenance activities on the platforms, which considerably hindered production. In 2013, just 80,000 m³ of oil were produced. • Shell started the process of shutting down production in the field in 2006. The Brent Spar was taken out of service in 1991, when the fields were connected to an oil pipeline.

PORT AUTHORITY ANNUAL FIGURES CONFIRM GROWTH OF OFFSHORE SECTOR

MORE SEAGOING VESSELS VISIT PORT OF DEN HELDER turnover, and shipping operator Seamar launched a new vessel. These are just a few examples of the way in which Den Helder is developing as the job generator for the region.

MISSION

The Port of Den Helder continues to grow (Photograph: archive Flying Focus

The number of offshore-related seagoing vessels that moored in the port of Den Helder in 2014 rose to 2,776, representing a growth of 7 percent as compared to 2013. This was revealed in the recently published annual ďŹ gures from the Port of Den Helder.

Jan van de Nes “In close consultation with the offshore companies, the fisheries sector and the Royal Dutch Navy, we were able to make optimum use of our port capacity, explained port director PietHein Kolff. “Over the coming years, we aim to further expand capacity, and to develop the port as the hub for offshore activities in the sou-

thern sector of the North Sea. Den Helder is experiencing continued economic growth in the offshore industry (oil, gas and renewable energy). There are also indications of growth in the locally-based defence industry. At the same time, the fisheries sector continues to grow, and there are clear indications of further development of the maritime knowledge industry based in and around Den Helder. The Port of Den Helder actively promotes and facilitates economic growth for businesses in the port itself and throughout the region. Director Kolff continued, “Over the past year we have seen growing economic activities and as a consequence higher employment in the offshore sector. Peterson SBS, for example, served more oil platforms, Den Helder Support Services DHSS generated more

At present, the offshore industry is the leading economic factor for the port of Den Helder. The majority of seagoing vessels that call in at the port is offshore-related. The entire region is well populated with companies and organisations that provide support and facility services to this sector, and the Port of Den Helder has expressed the ambition of achieving further growth over the coming years, through cooperation and innovative development. “Our mission is crystal clear. The Port of Den Helder will be the knowledge and service hub for the growing offshore industry in the southern sector of the North Sea, suggested Kolff. He referred to the development of the port of Den Helder over the past few years into an offshore and naval port of regional, national and even international importance. In 2013,

Port director Piet-Hein Kolff, “We facilitate all commercial activities in the port.

the Port signed an agreement with the Royal Dutch Navy to allow civilian vessels to moor in the naval docks and in 2014, during the Offshore Energy trade fair in Amsterdam, a collaboration agreement was signed with representatives of Dutch industry to make optimum use of the port infrastructure. These agreements have created more space for the commercial use of quaysides and plots of land released from (former) navy sites. Finally, the development of the new Kooyhaven inner dock represents additional support for the seaport and inland shipping.

FISHERY

Artist’s impression of the future inner dock in Den Helder: Kooyhaven.

The annual figures reveal that alongside growth in offshore activities, the number of fishing vessels calling in at the port has also risen, from 1,905 in 2013 to 2,000 in 2014. Last year, 705 boats unloaded their catch at the Hollands Noorden fish auction in Den Helder. The number of port calls by inland shipping vessels fell in 2014 from 229 to 110. The opening of the new inner harbour may reverse that trend.

OFFSHORENL: UPDATED PLATFORM FOR DUTCH PRIDE IN THE OFFSHORE SECTOR Same name, but a completely new look for the trade fair. On 24 and 25 March, OffshoreNL is due to be held for the seventh time at the Evenementenhal complex in Gorinchem, but this year the fair will be making a fresh new start as the presentation platform for Dutch pride in the offshore sector.

NEW PARTIES

Matthijs Daniels Give OffshoreNL a new lease of life. This was the goal the organising team at the Evenementenhal Gorinchem set itself. “This particular trade fair was in need of some TLC,” admitted Chantal de Groot. “A shift has taken place towards suppliers in this sector and to businesses that have opted for the offshore industry as a niche market. As a result, for the OffshoreNL platform, we too shifted our focus to a new target group.”

ORGANISATION As part of a team of four colleagues, each with their own specialist fields, she took on the task. “Esther Rodenburg is event manager for this trade fair”, explained De Groot. “She is responsible for the organisational elements of OffshoreNL, and is the first point of contact for exhibitors as well as being in charge of marketing, communication and related issues. Walter Nijssen and myself are consultants to the exhibitors. Together with existing and potential new exhibitors, we discuss and identify how they can best make use of the event as an integral part of their marketing strategy, thereby helping to secure a successful appearance at OffshoreNL. Our underlying goal is successful long-term cooperation.” The fourth

from so many small players. They represent the pride of the Netherlands, and those are the parties we intend to focus on at OffshoreNL,” explained De Groot. “We will of course also see the major players at the event, but as visitors to the various stands. They deliberately choose to attend the event, and that makes the overall quality of the trade fair so high. The exhibitors are the suppliers who make the work of the major players possible.”

Exhibitor consultant for the OffshoreNL event, Chantal de Groot, ‘The major players deliberately choose to attend this event, guaranteeing a high-quality trade fair.’

member of the event organisation is René Floor, product manager. “His task is to position OffshoreNL now and for the future. What should be the focus for the event in five years’ time? What are the target groups and what changes are taking place in the marketplace? He monitors all the developments with a view to making the entire trade fair ‘future proof’.” From now on, trade fairs in the Evenementenhal will be organised according to this formula. “In the past, a single person was responsible for organising the entire fair. Although it was enjoyable, within the new setting, we are able to better utilise each other’s individual specialisations, and complement one another.”

DUTCH PLAYERS As Chantal de Groot continued, “Over the past six years, OffshoreNL has been perceived as a successful formula. People

deliberately chose to attend, and exhibitors generated plenty of leads. Nonetheless, the time was right to re-examine the underlying formula to ensure that it remains an up-todate reflection of the market. For that reason, the name was changed last year from On- en Offshore to OffshoreNL. The focus is on the key Dutch suppliers active in the offshore sector, whose products make large-scale projects possible.” The trade fair brochure offers an excellent example of precisely what she means, with an illustration of a colossal platform in which the ‘smaller companies’ that made the overall structure possible are picked out: fixation systems with components from Genemuiden, drilling tools supplied by a company in Etten-Leur, pinions, hooks and cable pulleys from a supplier in Haps, and shut-off valves from Gouda and Hardinxveld-Giessendam. “Major projects are only possible thanks to top-quality products

“In other words, a completely new trade fair.” Chantal de Groot is perfectly clear on that point. “The new formula has been well-received by the proud suppliers. Exhibitors are signing up who we have never heard from in the past. Together with them, it is our task to make sure we attract the right kinds of visitors. We are already focusing our attention on a peripheral programme with a conference or lectures, for next year, but for this year’s fair, our sights are set on ensuring a successful trade fair floor, by creating a ‘meeting ground’ for suppliers.” OffshoreNL will be based around standard white stands, with a single central hospitality area as the perfect spot for networking, with topflight catering. Evenementenhal Gorinchem offers its exhibitors a full-service formula, including complete stand units, banners and flags for promotional purposes, unlimited catering for exhibitors and their business relations, free parking and an invitation service.

OFFSHORENL The OffshoreNL trade fair will be held on Tuesday 24 March between 10.00 and 18.00 hours and Wednesday 25 March between 13.00 and 21.00 hours. For more information and address details, surf to www.evenementenhal.nl/gorinchem. Stand registration is now opened.

IMPRESSIVE INNOVATIONS FROM WORLDWIDE-ACTIVE MARIFLEX GROUP The MariFlex Group is one of the world’s leading suppliers of special, portable cargo handling pumps for the shipping and offshore sector and the petrochemical industry. This global scope means that the company advises, supplies and innovates on all the world’s seas and oceans. As reflected by the group’s extensive customer base, the working motto is both powerful and thoroughly understood by offshore and shipping operators in every corner of the globe. With the words ‘We make your problems our business’’, Managing Director Gerd Jan van de Pol described the heart and soul of the business that was launched thirty years ago by his partner Ruud Cogels.

Ellen Lengkeek Directors Ruud Cogels (left) and Gerd Jan van de Pol of the MariFlex Group.

The broad-based service, innovations and knowledge transfer provided by today’s MariFlex Group are deeply-rooted in the DNA of the company, and date back to the nineteen eighties. Both Directors, Gerd Jan van de Pol and Ruud Cogels, can look back on years of experience in their specialist fields; in addition to offering 24/7

Innovation: a twin-walled flexible hose with leak detection.

services, both also concentrate on coming up with sustainable innovations. Today, the MariFlex Group is market leader in design, fabrication and service provision for liquid cargo handling. With head offices in Vlaardingen in the heart of the Port of Rotterdam, the company also has branch offices in Houston (US), Singapore and Sha Alam in Malaysia. In brief, the business is involved in the transfer, transhipment and offloading of liquid bulk cargoes from and to ships, containers and tankers. The cargoes in question are located on board ships or in industrial and petrochemical installations, on shore.

“An explosion occurred on a semi-submersible platform operated by BP, resulting in a number of fatalities. The platform sank causing the drill string to break, and oil poured into the sea over a period of months. It was a massive environmental disaster. Eventually we were able to make sure that not only our own pumps but also sweeping arms belonging to Rijkswaterstaat (Department of Transport and Water Management) were flown into the area, to assist in clearing up the oil spill.” Despite Van de Pol’s sober tone, the effort of the MariFlex Group in tackling the consequences of this disaster are considerable.

ASSISTANCE WITH OIL EMERGENCIES

LEAK DETECTION

“The core tasks of MariFlex are pump services, engineering, transfer and barging services,” explained Van de Pol at the company’s head office, but these core activities have led to numerous ancillary ‘adventures’, for example deployment of the company’s resources in a series of salvage operations. Support from MariFlex, including the supply of hydraulic pumps and power packs in tackling the oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico off the southern coast of the United States four years ago received much attention in the Dutch news media.

The company has reached an advanced stage in marketing is MariFlex twin-wall flexible hoses with leak detection, an innovation of which Van de Pol and Cogels are especially proud, and which is due to acquire huge importance in their field. “We now have permission to launch our product on the market. The hose, the flexible link between the engine and the network of fuel pipes, includes a leak detection system that issues an early warning when any of the hoses springs a leak. It is then vital to immediately shut the engine down, and take action to avoid further disasters. We have been

working for years on this revolutionary invention, with which we aim to offer our existing and future customers even better service.”

INNOVATION IN VIEW

4 QUESTIONS FOR… RICHARD HEIJKOOP What are the latest developments and trends in the offshore sector? Who are the people behind them and what are there motivations? Groenervaren.nl, the platform for knowledge sharing about sustainability issues and innovation in the maritime sector aims to find out with four questions.

1) WHAT RELATIONSHIP DOES HEIJSTONRG® HAVE WITH THE OFFSHORE INDUSTRY? “HeijstoNRG® is a global full-service supplier of products and services for the on and offshore process industry, broken down into four divisions: personnel, process solutions, process equipment and LNG. We offer and indeed

ABOUT GROENERVAREN Groenevaren is the source of information for and from maritime professionals in the form of an independent, online platform focused on sharing knowledge about innovation, substainability, trends, tips & tricks within the maritime sector. Subjects covered by Groenervaren range from propulsion systems, via regulations and legislation, through to waste substances, fuel economy and grants and subsidies. www.groenervaren.nl

deliver total solutions, worldwide, for oil and gas producers. Thanks to our specialist knowledge and professional skill set, we are able to take over the entire production process or simply participate in the engineering process. We are seeing a worldwide expansion in the offshore industry. Canada, Africa, Brazil and Australia are the biggest suppliers. The major players on the market are shifting their energy strategy from oil platforms to gas platforms and then liquefying resultant gas in LNG liquefying plants. It is our firm belief that LNG is the fuel of the future, and it is one of our specialisations within which we focus on small-scale LNG.”

2) IN YOUR OPINION, WHICH INNOVATION IN THE OFFSHORE SECTOR OFFERS THE BEST PROSPECTS FOR THE FUTURE? “We are seeing a rise in the number of SIP (jack-up) platforms. These platforms offer the advantage that if the reserves at one location become depleted, the platform can simply be moved elsewhere. As a result, the platform does not need to be decommissioned and dismantled, and that fact represents a huge cost saving. Rigs of this kind are already operational in the North Sea and in Canada. Another category of new players on the world market is the FLNG unit. On these floating production units, the extracted gas is liquefied directly on board and subsequently shipped to LNG terminals.”

3) WHAT IS YOUR ROLE? “We have built up years of experience in a

variety of onshore and offshore production processes including refining, LNG and oil & gas processing, worldwide. We also have broad experience of offshore commissioning and production. To a considerable extent, our activities are focused on offshore oil & gas processing, and of course LNG. Our small-scale LNG expertise is becoming increasingly important.”

4) WHAT IS THE EFFECT OF LNG ON THE MARITIME SECTOR? “LNG is occupying an increasingly important position in the overall oil and gas industry. CO2 emissions must be further reduced and LNG can make a major contribution. With that in mind, our focus is on small-scale LNG. We are currently observing a general rise in the use of LNG as a fuel for the maritime sector. We should look for our role models to countries like Norway, where LNG already plays an important part. I personally am very much in favour of bringing all the players together –government, regulators, innovation initiatives, banks and the whole maritime sector – to move in the same direction so that we can all achieve our common goals. We at HeijstoNRG® are more than happy to play our part.” HeijstoNRG® BV 0031-(0)180-850374 www.heijstonrg.com

EMS JOINS OFFSHORE MARKET WITH TESS AND LIMOSA The company has long been involved in tracing and repairing disruptions on board ships, but by supplying the complete on-board electronics for supply vessel Tess and the converted push barge Limosa for deployment in Nigeria, Electric Marine Support (EMS) from Alblasserdam has demonstrated its mastery of offshore projects, too. “This is an interesting market in which we wish to make our presence felt,” explained Ronald Hamstra, founder and owner of EMS.

André Oerlemans The Limosa was converted at Shipyard Trico from a tanker push barge into a self-propelling tanker that is set to transport oil from the hinterland of Nigeria to the sea. To fulfil this task, the vessel was fitted with a new wheelhouse and accommodation, generator stets to power the three V-Pods from Verhaar Omega and a new ship safety package. EMS provided all electrical engineering components, installed the power management and fitted the generator sets. Together with a future sister vessel, the Tess will be deployed for guarding and supervising large seabed survey vessels, and for supply and crew change activities. As such, the Tess is a multipurpose workboat. The Tess is equipped with three diesel generators that will not only power the Veth Jets but also deliver power to the on-board network. They are fitted in such a way that they

For the Limosa, EMS supplied the complete on-board electrical system, from the nautical package through to generator sets, and all technical installations.

can be switched on or off as demand for power rises and falls. Ronald Hamstra, ‘EMS can tackle both new-building and conversion projects.’

STRICT REQUIREMENTS “Most of the time the vessel will sail slowly at low power. Hence the decision to fit electrically-powered propulsion,” explained Hamstra. “We will be supplying the necessary power management and to put it simply will be fitting all the cables between the generator sets and propulsion system. Our task includes installing and adjusting the frequency regulation, and the main switchboard is of our own design. In our power management system the computer regulates sailing efficiency, and decides when additional power is needed. Our role is to elaborate, install and program that system.” According to Hamstra, these two projects are the company’s calling card for the offshore market. “They demonstrate our ability to complete both new-building and conversion work,” he added. The biggest difference between this and inland shipping projects is the strict requirements imposed at sea. The inspections are also tougher, particularly for electric propulsion installations. “The system has to be produced in such a way that if one component fails at sea, another unit can take over, so that the vessel can continue its journey. In other words, installing redundant or back-up systems. That is what makes the

layout of the installation different, and calls for adjustments to the system design. With these successful projects, EMS has demonstrated its capacity to meet precisely those needs,” concluded Hamstra. The company believes that it will be able to attract more orders for multicats, supply boats and workboats for the offshore sector. Hamstra continued, “We already carry out service work on large seagoing vessels, and are called in to repair system breakdowns; but that is the market we are looking for.” Over the past few years, EMS has supplied and fitted the electrical installations for dozens of (inland shipping) vessels, ranging from the nautical package through to generator sets and from consoles to switchboxes. The company has contributed to the ground-breaking sustainable vessels the Argonon, Duandra, Zeus and Semper Fi, powered by LNG or diesel-electric propulsion systems, or fitted with 360 degree-rotating thrusters.

COMPLETE ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION “In the last five years, practically no more traditional ships have been built,” commented Hamstra. “This development has made our work far more

complex. We are now more often involved in building electrically-powered propulsion installations and we supply and install the complete electrical system, the cables, the frequency regulators and the control systems for those vessels, as well as the software that makes everything work.” After acquiring work experience as both engineer and manager in other companies, Hamstra started EMS as a one-man business in May 2000. The company has now acquired a solid position on the market, and employs a fulltime team of 20 with 25 contract workers, the majority of whom are deployed at the shipyards where the vessels are built. In Alblasserdam, at the company’s premises by the Noord, most of the work involves building prefab installations and panels, and the underlying engineering work.

HOLLAND SAFETY ON STANDBY FOR OFFSHORE AND MARINE Speed of work is always important. Offshore vessels never remain long in port. With that in mind, inspectors and maintenance engineers need to be ready to swing into action as soon as a vessel docks. Offshore, too, inspections and maintenance work have to be undertaken rapidly and on time. Holland Safety BV in Den Helder keeps its expertly trained inspectors and maintenance staff permanently on standby.

Jan van de Nes Holland Safety BV specialises in the inspection and supply of firefighting and safety equipment for the offshore and chemical industry, shipping, official bodies (including the Royal Dutch Navy) and the private sector. Since 2012, the company has been importing portable and mobile fire extinguishers from the French manufacturer Desautel. Director Henk van Arem said of his business, “Holland Safety BV started out as Holland Stores BV (1982), a company that was responsible for inspecting fire extinguishers for which no standard had been established. In 1993, the inspection and maintenance of firefighting equipment was transferred to an independent

operating company Holland Stores Safety and Fire Control BV. Since 1995, HS S&FC has held the status as approved REOB company (Regeling voor de Erkenning van Onderhoudsbedrijven kleine blusmiddelen – Recognition of Fire Extinguisher Maintenance Regulations) for the inspection of all types of fire extinguishers. Other safety equipment followed in subsequent years.” The inspection of gas extinguishing installations (including those on the ships of the Royal Dutch Navy), emergency lighting, climbing equipment, lifejackets, survival suits and breathing apparatus were added, so that today Holland Safety provide a complete package of

A selection of the numerous safety products available from Holland Safety.

safety-related services. In 2005, the subsidiary became a fully independent company, and the range of products was expanded to include even more firefighting and safety articles, all available from stock, and listed in a clear and concise catalogue (see www.holland-safety.nl). The current name Holland Safety BV dates back to 2007. It moved into the present premises in 2009. Here the company has modern office space, a 250 m2 workshop, a 600 m2 warehouse and approx. 800 m2 of outdoor facilities.

FRESH PASTURES Holland Safety BV has built up more than twelve years’ experience in carrying out inspections on board offshore installations. “Our eight service engineers have all the necessary offshore papers and experience and knowledge of firefighting and safety material at offshore locations. As well as fire extinguishers, gas extinguishing installations, breathing equipment, lifejackets and survival suits, we also inspect emergency signals, lifebuoys, safety signalling devices, eye-wash bottles and showers, helicopter crash kits, hose reel cabinets and appliances, twin agent units, fire dampers and foam applicators,” listed Van Arem. “We carry out most of our work on location on the platforms and are able to carry out repairs at our own workshop. We provide our services for various clients including Total E&P Nederland BV, Wintershall Noordzee BV, GDF Suez

E&P Nederland BV and GSP from Rumania. We also work on shore, and supply materials to a variety of customers including Noble Drilling Ltd, Chevron E&P Neth., Bluestream Offshore, Peterson SBS Supply, Den Helder Support Service, SeaMar Shipping, Acta Marine and Expro.” As a REOB-recognised fire extinguisher maintenance company, Van Arem has its REOBcertified technicians work in accordance with the NEN2559 standard for portable fire extinguishers, NEN2659 for mobile extinguishers and NEN-EN671-3 for hose reels. Holland Safety BV operates according to the rules of the BRL-K21005/01 and is ISO9001:2008 and VCA*2008/5.1 certified. Fire extinguishers can be inspected at the user’s own location, and following the inspection a report containing the findings is always issued. In its own workshop, Holland Safety BV then undertakes to maintain, refill and repair all brands, types and sizes of fire extinguisher. MAMMOTH SHIP NO LONGER TO BE CALLED PIETER SCHELTE The offshore operator Allseas has finally given in to the international pressure to not name the world’s largest work and transport vessel after the Nazi war criminal Pieter Schelte. The son of the now deceased Schelte stuck to his original idea for months, saying he had distanced himself from his father’s wartime past, wishing to merely ‘honour him as the offshore pioneer he was’. Leaders of the Jewish community in the Netherlands and Great Britain and the international transport federation ITF as well as Shell, the company due to deploy the vessel, responded angrily to the decision by Allseas to christen the mammoth vessel Pieter Schelte. The ship was to be named after the father of Allseas Director Edward Heerema, who passed away in 1981. During World War Two, Pieter Schelte Heerema was a member of the Waffen SS. He was subsequently convicted of war crimes and sentenced to three years imprisonment, of which he actually spent eighteen months in incarceration. He then relocated to Venezuela where he laid the

foundations for the Heerema group, acquiring a leading position in the offshore industry. The company has in the past installed oil platforms for Shell and other operators.

INCREDULITY Jonathan Arkush, vice president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews responded incredulously. “Naming a ship after an SS officer convicted of war crimes is an insult to the millions of people who died during the Nazi occupation,” he commented in a British newspaper. “We therefore strongly urge the owners to reconsider the name of the ship.” The international transport federation ITF also demanded that the world’s largest ship be given a different name. Oil company Shell recently issued a similar call. Allseas eventually gave in to the pressure. The new name for this mammoth vessel is the Pioneering Spirit.

IMTECH ‘DEPLOYS’ SPECIAL FLOATEL The huge POSH Xanadu floatel. (Photograph: Imtech/PaxOcean)

Imtech Marine has been able to add yet another remarkable job to its annals. The company, with head offices in Rotterdam, has supplied all external communication and navigation equipment on board the POSH Xanadu. This ‘floating’ hotel – or floatel – was delivered to PaxOcean in Zhoushan.

OFFSHORE WIND MISSION TO DENMARK

Minister of Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation Ploumen will head the mission.

In collaboration with the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO- Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland) will be organising a mission to Denmark and northern Germany on 17 and 18 March, headed by Minister of Foreign

Trade and Development Cooperation Ploumen. Cleantech Holland /FME is jointly organising the Offshore Wind programme within this mission. More than 25 percent of power in Denmark is generated from wind. There are plans to double this contribution by 2020. Den-

mark has set itself the goal of no longer dependent on fossil fuels by 2050. The programme in Denmark includes matchmaking with Danish companies, a networking reception and a series of visits. Contacts have already been established with the entire (offshore) wind industry including Dong Energy and Vestas.

The floatel is in fact a semi-submersible hotel platform in the form of a ship, stabilised with pillars, that offers accommodation for 750 passengers and crew members in 390 spacious cabins. Imtech Marine is technology partner to PaxOcean in this project, via its Service and Nav/Com brand Radio Holland. The one hundred year-old name Radio Holland was recently reintroduced to the shipping industry by Imtech Marine. POSH Xanadu provides accommodation at sea in support of maintenance, installation and commissioning work on platforms and floating production units, and can be deployed in any of the world’s seas under any weather conditions. ‘Over the past few years, Imtech Marine has built up a solid partnership with PaxOcean Zhuhai and PaxOcean Zhoushan. Both shipyards are specialised in the fabrication of pilot vessels including light construction vessels, anchor handling tugs, platform supply vessels and ASD tugs. The companies have collaborated on some thirty of their ships, and Imtech was responsible for supplying all navigation and communication equipment on board,” explained representatives from both companies.

NEW MODEL SHOALBUSTER 3512 FROM DAMEN ORDERED BY VAN WIJNGAARDEN MARINE SERVICES Damen has begun work on the latest and one of the largest model yet in its popular, shallow draft Shoalbuster range. Ordered by Van Wijngaarden Marine Services, the Shoalbuster 3512 is 35 metres in length, has a draft of 2.9 metres and GRT of 498 tonnes. The completely new design brings a range of benefits including a larger bridge, an extensive working deck of 134m² and accommodation for up to 11 personnel. The propulsion system is

based on three engines delivering 2910 bKW at 1800 rpm, with the middle engine configured to supplement the twin gensets when additional power is required by hydraulic deck gear such as the crane and winch, and also the bow thruster. As a class, Damen Shoalbusters are exceptionally versatile, handling tasks ranging from short and long distance towing to dredge support for offshore projects such as supporting the construction and maintenance of windfarms. The new 3512 will be available for deployment wherever it is required. A bollard pull of 55 tonnes yet a draft of less the three metres will make it

ARA GASOIL STOCKS, WHIGHEST SINCE MAY 2011 Gasoil stocks held in independent storage at Europe’s Antwerp-RotterdamAmsterdam hub rose by 7 percent to 2.921 million tonnes, data from Dutch-based PJK International showed. Gasoline, naphtha and jet fuel stocks also rose while fuel oil stocks declined. Total ARA stocks rose to their highest level since

January 2010, according to PJK analyst Patrick Kulsen. The rise in gasoline and naphtha stocks was due to large imports from Russia as well as the contango in the market structure, when prompt prices are lower than future prices, encouraging storage. Gasoil stocks rose to their highest level since May 2011 due to the contango in the market as well as weakening end-user demand along the river Rhine, Kulsen said.

ZULU EXPLORATION WELL, OFFSHORE NORWAY HAS BEEN COMPLETED AS A GAS DISCOVERY Lundin Petroleum AB (Lundin Petroleum), through its wholly owned subsidiary Lundin Norway AS (Lundin Norway), has completed the drilling of wildcat well 26/10-1. The well investigated the hydrocarbon potential of the Zulu prospect in PL674BS, which is located 100 km west of Stavanger on the Norwegian west coast and approximately 30 km northeast of the Johan Sverdrup discovery. The main objective of well 26/10-1 was to test the hydrocarbon potential in the Miocene Utsira Formation sand. The well encountered Utsira Formation sand with very good reservoir quality. The well encountered gas in an upper 24 metres sand sequence. Pressure measurements imply a gas column of 36 metres at

the well. Thorough logging and sampling has been performed. Fluid data will be analysed and detailed mapping performed for resource potential evaluation. The well is being plugged and abandoned as a gas discovery. The well was drilled by the drilling rig Island Innovator to a total depth of 995 metres subsea and was terminated in sediments of presumed Oligocene age Hordaland Group. The well was drilled in a water depth of 140 metres on the Patch Bank Ridge. This well was the first exploration well in licence PL674BS, which was awarded as a part of PL674 in APA 2012 and carved out as a separate licence in 2014. Lundin Norway is operator with a 35 percent working interest. Petrolia Norway and E.ON E&P Norge are partners with 35 and 30 percent working interest respectively.
