WHAT ADVICE COULD YOU GIVE TO NEW PROFESSIONALS IN THE BUSINESS?

NICE TO MEET! 2 SECTOR PLAYERS IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Lennard: Since I myself am a newcomer to the business, I don’t know if I can give a meaningful answer. I always try to keep the initiative in everything I do, and constantly ask myself ‘why’. In that way I am forever learning new things. Also remember to take the time for everything you do: quality is more important than quantity. Marc: Take your time to get to know the sector and learn from people with experience. If you work in shifts, you only actually work 24 weeks a year. As a beginner, it will take you at least two years to become truly experienced in the industry.

IN LOVE, ENGAGED OR MARRIED? CHILDREN? Lennard: I recently moved in with my girl-friend. As yet we have no children. We have plans to buy a house next summer, in the always beautiful province of Drenthe. Marc: Married for 27 years to Carolien. We have two wonderful daughters: Lisanne (25) who lives together with her partner Nils, and Lonneke (23), married to Armand, set to become a mother in March. So we are soon to be grandmother and grandfather.

Lennard: I work for Wanted Oil & Gas as operator/ mechanic on the PetroGas platforms. Marc: I work for Cofely Fabricom GDFSUEZ, better known as Fabricom Offshore Services. I started as mechanical technician and have gradually risen to my current position, contract manager for the Total E&P Nederland BV Maintenance Contract.

Lennard: I have now been working offshore for two months. Previously, I was employed in the shipping industry as third engineer on an LNG tanker. I made the change so that I could spend more time at home, and was interested in the oil and gas industry. It turns out to have been a great choice. I am thoroughly enjoying myself. Marc: I started as a mechanic with the Royal Dutch Navy in 1983, and left in 2001. I then spent two years in technical support at Unishore, and joined Fabricom in March 2003. All in all, I have been in the business for more than 31 years.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE? Lennard: I hope to make a career in the oil and

Lennard: A meal with my girlfriend. If there is anything left after that, I would top up my motorbike with petrol. Marc: On my family, but if it ever reaches that point, the whole world will either be on fire, or I will have made a complete mess of everything.

gas industry. First I would like to get to know all the aspects of the business, and then employ that knowledge in an attractive position. Marc: All things being equal, I will complete my post-HBO (higher professional education) degree in Commercial Studies in June. I will then focus on the book I have been working on for years, and am desperate to complete. I also hope to live to a healthy old age, together with my wife, and to be a fantastic granddad who spends more time at home than he did when his own children were small.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE LEISURE TIME ACTIVITY? Lennard: I am fanatical about my motorbike. On rainy days you will find me in the local gym practising my Tai-Jutsu. Marc: I enjoy tennis, running and skiing. I watch fantasy films, listen to music and write columns.

WITH WHOM WOULD YOU LIKE TO SWAP PLACES FOR A WEEK, AND WHY? Lennard: With a senior executive from the oil industry. I would be really fascinating to see what goes on at strategic level. Marc: No one. But occasionally I would like to be able to speak to the whole world, and ask why we are making such a mess of everything. We only live once, and we should all make the best of that life: without arguing, war or other forms of misery.

I AM ONLY TRULY SATISFIED WHEN ... Lennard:... I am sure that I have really done my best. No one can do more. Marc: … everything goes according to plan, the people around me can (at least partly) fulfil their dreams, and I am allowed to reach a healthy old age together with my wife and family, leaving me a happy old man.

NEW SPECIALIST NEWSPAPER:

NORTH SEA NEWS Whether or not coincidental, it is certainly appealingly symbolic that just when the world’s largest mammoth heavy lifter sails into Rotterdam, in the hinterland of this port city, a new offshore newspaper is born.

Ellen Lengkeek We may not be as imposing as the behemoth Pieter Schelte, capable of removing a drilling platform in one go, but we do share the same target group and passion for offshore business. The aim of the newspaper is to bring the offshore sector together in words and pictures, as well as dedicating plenty of space to offshore-related businesses, wishing to share their knowledge, and reveal their latest innovations. The newspaper has been entitled North Sea News, will appear monthly, and is the brainchild of De Stroming Media publishing group, in collaboration with North Sea Energy in the Province of North Holland. The articles, news and business-to-business stories will be distributed in both Dutch and English from various locations, including helicopter platforms at home and abroad. The newspaper of course also has links to all social media, and a website with its own platform.

news will literally be flown and sailed to the target group, as explained by Sieg Verzendaal, “The publication can best be described as a handy, informative newspaper to be read on drilling rigs and right along the supply chain.” Together with Jan van Laar, Verzendaal is the initiator and publisher of North Sea News. “Call us stubborn, but we regularly come across businesses that wish to share their knowledge of the offshore sector with other players in the market, without wanting to stand up and be counted amongst the ‘big boys’. We can offer a platform for both.’’ The focus is broad, sober and realistic. North Sea News will be published in the

third week of the month, in tabloid format, in full-colour, and will start with a production run of 12,500 copies. In the style of De Stroming Courant, aimed at the inland shipping sector, special offshore feature inserts can also be produced. Jan van Laar explained, “North Sea News will provide background articles and stories, and will report on developments and the latest news in the field of wind, oil, gas, onshore and offshore, shipping, dredging, ports and harbours and the maritime and salvage sector. Because we are

so focused, we have created a newspaper that can be linked to the offshore network. Copies will be distributed to select business addresses and organisations operating in the offshore and shipping sectors.” Are we mad to be starting a paper-based newspaper in the current climate? “You could describe us as somewhat stubborn, but the same was said of us more than five years ago when we launched the now successful De Stroming Courant for the inland shipping sector. A team of expert journalists works on that publication and we aim to follow the same course with North Sea News”, continued Verzendaal. “We have joined forces with North Sea Energy as a means of providing the broadest possible news coverage. We will be working together with Mark de Vries. When it comes to strengthening offshore activities in the Netherlands, over the next few years, starting in 2015, the main point of additional focus will be the Second Maasvlakte. That is a development we also aim to anticipate.” The newspaper will be distributed in the Netherlands, Belgium, England, Scotland, Denmark and Norway.

INFORMATIVE According to the people behind North Sea News, the decision to not publish a glossy magazine but instead a far more accessible, handy newspaper is a unique concept for the offshore world. Add this to the fact that the

DEN HELDER-BASED BUSINESSES BOOST TRAINING PROGRAMMES

DUTCH OFFSHORE ACADEMY TRAINS THE ENTIRE CHAIN On the initiative of a number of educational institutions in collaboration with regional businesses, the Dutch Offshore Academy was established by the Tetrix and ROC Regional Training Centres, the consultancy and coaching organisation ProChangeSolutions and Den Helder Training Center. The Dutch Offshore Academy identifies itself as the leading specialist college in Europe for training professional craftsmen for the offshore industry through practical and contextbased study programmes at senior secondary vocational education (MBO+) level. This claim makes Den Helder the epicentre for training programmes that actually meet the needs of business and industry.

Jan van de Nes Director of ProChangeSolutions, Edwin Stolk, together with ROC director for Education in the Kop van Noord-Holland Peter Droog, explained that there is a huge demand for practice-based study programmes for the entire offshore, oil, gas and wind energy sector. “The demand not only relates to operational work on platforms but also the Maintenance & Repair sector, technical and logistic staff at suppliers, assembly companies, road and sea transport companies and helicopter operators,” suggested Stolk. “There are also excellent forms of cooperation,” added Droog. “We maintain contact with the companies that are on the lookout

HSV Secretary Peter Droog (l) and Chairman Edwin Stolk. “Our aim is to invite anyone who contributes at any level to the economic development of the Noordkop area and who is in a position to offer good training possibilities and employment to young people, to join in with our collaborative ventures.”

for employees, so we keep up to date on their ever-changing needs. And in turn, we adjust our teaching programmes.” For both policy makers, cooperation is the key strength. “We involve all the participants right along the chain in our consultation sessions, and that helps the various managers in the chain to recognise and understand one another’s problems and solutions,” commented Stolk. At the same time, both are members of the governing board of the Port and Shipping Association (HSV) in Den Helder. Stolk is chairman and Droog secretary.

REGIONAL “In any meetings of the association, we try to bring in other organisations from throughout the region,” continued the HSV chairman. “That helps ensure that all the economic organisations from the port and the centre of Den Helder and from the surrounding towns

Water Management (Rijkswaterstaat) on the Naval Dock site (due to be handed over by the Royal Dutch Navy) and the expansion from the Paleiskade right through to the naval dock at Fort Harssens, are just two examples. “These programmes will above all assist Peterson SBS,” suggested Stolk, who is particularly delighted with the ‘promotional role’ taken up by the HSV over the past few years, together with various organisations including the municipality of Den Helder, the Royal Dutch Navy, the NV Port of Den Helder, Willemsoord BV, Maritime Campus Netherlands, and local bodies such as the Woningstichting/Zeestad BV housing cooperation, environmental organisations and the ‘sister organisations’ in the regions of North Holland and the seaports in the north/northwest of the country.

SYMPOSIUM and larger villages understand one another’s interests, so that they can be discussed and wherever possible converted into win-win situations. We operate a similar consultation system with other offshore ports like IJmuiden/Velsen, Amsterdam and Harlingen.” As a consequence, the HSV has adopted the role of overall director for consultations with all sectors in the supply chain and for the other port-related sectors such as fishery, recreational sailing and commercial inland shipping. “Together, we are developing long-term visions for the entire Kop van Noord-Holland area in terms of economic development, with a primary focus on our port, and the study programmes and practical solutions that are needed as part of the vision, such as expanding the available dockside space for offshore activities,” suggested Droog. The plans for converting the jetties operated by the Department of Public Works and

At the start of December 2014, a symposium was organised in Den Helder by the HSV and NV Port of Den Helder to discuss the opportunities and restrictions for the socalled Wadden Sea ports, all of which are dependent on environmental legislation for their economic growth. Chairperson of the Advisory Council for the Wadden Sea Ports, Ms Tineke Netelenbos (former Minister of Transport, Public Works and Water Management) made it clear that the opportunities are certainly. John Awater of Bluewater presented an example in the form of the project for tidal energy developed jointly with a whole raft of other companies, that could be installed off the coast of Den Helder. The lecture by environmental expert Arjen Bosch was particularly interesting in relation to the expansion of the port of Den Helder. He outlined a range of possibilities without negatively affecting the Wadden Sea environment.

7 offices in the Netherlands and China. For Heatmaster, worldwide service is an essential precondition. “We have a solid reputation for trouble shooting. Our maintenance staff will be on site, anywhere in the world, as quickly as an aircraft can get them there.” The Dutch financial newspaper Het Financieele Dagblad recently nominated Heatmaster for the Gazelle Award, as a ‘fastgrowing and solidly-performing business in the Netherlands’. To be eligible for this award, turnover growth of at least 20 percent must have been achieved over a period of three years. Nonetheless, Van den Hof has no intention of taking a moment’s rest, and is now steadily innovating in line with the expansion of LNG in shipping, as well as occasionally participating in external studies, while expressing his confidence in ‘tailormade solutions’ using his system designs and main components.

GROWING INTEREST FOR

HEATMASTER

HEATING SYSTEMS

Hard at work at the Dutch company Heatmaster, worldwide suppliers of tailor-made heating systems.

Large businesses in the offshore market for shipping and industry are increasingly recognising the work of the innovative and growing Dutch company Heatmaster. For the company’s director Gert van den Hof, such interest is not self-evident. Innovation, careful maintenance of contacts and above all offering the customer attractive prices for technologically-advanced sustainable total solutions, on the other hand, are selfevident for Van den Hof. And in that fact clearly lies the secret of the growing global interest Heatmaster is experiencing.

Ellen Lengkeek The company, with its head office in Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht close to the port city of Rotterdam in the Netherlands, and with a branch office in Shanghai, China, conceives and builds maritime and industrial heating systems using thermal oil, hot water and steam. Specifically for its maritime applications, Heatmaster is for example capable of precisely calculating heat losses. Heat recovery is employed in all heat sources on

board, and the overall outcome is lower fuel costs. Based on thirty years’ experience and knowledge of innovative heating systems, in 2002, director Gert van den Hof decided to chart his own course, with the launch of Heatmaster.

GAZELLE AWARD Heatmaster today employs forty people and has (service) agreements with local agents in key port areas, throughout the world. Sales, service and design are undertaken at the

WORLDWIDE CUSTOMER BASE The company has worldwide experience of heating systems for a huge variety of offshore units, commercial vessels (including dredgers, roro and heavy-lift equipment) and naval ships. The clientele for example includes the Canadian and Russian coastguard services, while in China, Brazil, Africa and Europe, Heatmaster also maintains a market share in dry bulk cargo vessels and the dry bulk industry. The offices in Shanghai were opened six years ago, to improve service to the Asian market. “We work for inland shipping and seagoing operators, but our current focus is the offshore sector. We collaborate closely with our partners in Wiesloch in Germany, for both the design and production of boilers. The thermal oil boilers are based on the tried-and-tested Wiesloch design, that has been in use for some thirty years. Thermal oil heating systems are very reliable, generate high output and are extremely long-lived. The success of optimum performance lies in the design.”

As well as for shipping applications, Heatmaster also supplies heating systems for industry, with gas-fired boilers and systems for power plants.

LNG DESIGNS The LNG issue (the ever more common use of Liquid Natural Gas as a fuel source) also represents a challenge for Van den Hof, in creating a clear link with his heating systems. As Van den Hof explained, “Naturally we are interested in LNG and the related new systems, as a possible continuing future sales market, for the coming period. We are currently investigating the possibilities, in detail. It is not without reason that we took part in the European TEFLES project aimed at reducing emissions on board ships. LNG has an important role to play in that connection. By using LNG, CO2 emissions can be reduced, boilers remain cleaner, and NOx emissions and soot emissions are decimated.” The Netherlands is recognised as one of the most innovative economies in the European Union. As Van den Hof continued, “If you add to that fact our fifty years’ experience with gas consumption, with our heating systems, we can take a clear lead.” Heatmaster b.v. ARRIVAL OF ‘MONSTER SHIP’ PIETER SCHELTE AS STARTING SIGNAL

MORE OFFSHORE ON SECOND MAASVLAKTE

The megaship the Pieter Schelte owned by the Swiss-Dutch conglomerate Allseas.

By finishing the ‘monster ship’ the Pieter Schelte for owner and designer Allseas in the Alexiahaven, the port of Rotterdam this year has sounded the starting signal for a larger offshore market on the Second Maasvlakte. The megaship with its twin hulls, that measures 382 metres long and a remarkable 124 metres wide, was built in Okpo, South Korea. This finishing work will be carried out in the Netherlands, prior to deployment for removing offshore structures, in the North Sea. The Alexiahaven, specially dredged deeper and with surrounding dyke walls, will serve as homeport.

Ellen Lengkeek The Pieter Schelte was specifically designed for the installation and removal of large oil and gas platforms at sea. Allseas, a major supplier to the oil and gas market, is also equipping the vessel for laying large pipelines. The arrival of the Pieter Schelte is set to be the starting signal for the development of the planned Alexiahaven into a centre for the offshore industry. Senior executive at the port of Rotterdam, Allard Castelein,

announced during the presentation of his most recent transhipment figures, that the port authority has signed a ten-year contract with Allseas for accommodating the vessel on the Second Maasvlakte. In between jobs, the ship will moor in the Alexiahaven. On that basis, the Port of Rotterdam Authority is hoping to develop a location for the dismantling of offshore platforms and the reuse of the resulting material. According to Castelein, this means that Rotterdam will offer an alternative for the dismantling of

– to date almost exclusively – ships on the beaches of for example India and Bangladesh. Rotterdam also aims to join in with the market for the storage and transport of components for offshore wind farms, now mainly reserved for Flushing and Eemshaven. “The decision to dedicate a large proportion of the Second Maasvlakte to the offshore sector means that for the time being, Rotterdam will not be building any new container terminals,” explained Sjaak Poppe of the Port of Rotterdam Authority. In the area that takes up almost one third of the total 2000 hectare site of the Second Maasvlakte, two new terminals had been initially proposed (T3 and T4). Castelein expects there to be no additional demand for the new terminals, over the next ten years. Both the new terminals on Maasvlakte 2, RWG and APMT2, and the Euromax terminal operated by ECT have the space to almost double their capacity. “The finishing work on the Pieter Schelte will be carried out on the inner mooring of the Second Maasvlakte. A basin has been specially dredged out for the vessel, at that location. In the port of Rotterdam, the 65 metre-long beams for the lifting system are set to be installed. “The lifting beams were built in Italy, and will be transported to the Netherlands by ship,” explained Sjaak Poppe of the Port of Rotterdam Authority. The arrival of the vessel is the signal for expansion of the Dutch offshore market which at present is above all based in Schiedam and the Drechtsteden towns, within easy reach of the port city of Rotterdam. Allard Castelein has referred to “a fabulous boost for the maritime industry. The work is expected to generate much additional turnover for businesses throughout the region”.

The inner mooring, here clearly visible on the new Second Maasvlakte, is to be the centrepiece of new offshore activities (Photograph: Port of Rotterdam Authority)

PIETER SCHELTE The Pieter Schelte is intended to be deployed for installing and removing superstructures and substructures from large offshore oil and gas platforms, in one piece. The colossus is capable of lifting structures weighing up to 48,000 tonnes, more than three times the capacity of the Balder operated by Heerema Marine Contractors, a ship that with a lift capacity of 14,200 tonnes is still the world’s largest crane vessel. The new ship was built at the Daewoo yard in Korea, on behalf of offshore operator Allseas. Construction costs are around 2.4 billion euro. The ship has space for 570 people and will travel at an average speed of 25 km/h, displacing one million tonnes of water.

DEN HELDER AIRPORT

FIRST HOME BASE FOR NEW NHV HELICOPTERS From now onwards, Den Helder Airport is home base to two brand-new EC175 helicopters.

12 December 2014. Two brand-new helicopters arrived in Den Helder and were ‘christened’ by the airport fire brigade. What kind of aircraft are they, who are they intended for, and exactly what can they do?

Jan van de Nes The new EC175 helicopters arrived at their new home base, like a pair of twins. NHV has decided to deploy its new EC175 helicopters from Airbus Helicopters to Den Helder Airport. For the time being, the aircraft will see service on behalf of Wintershall Noordzee BV. They are to supply the 26 platforms run by this operator. The EC175 is an advanced aircraft that comes in four different models, and from the range,

NHV opted for both the Oil & Gas model and the Search and Rescue model. The helicopter is fitted with double life rafts, and offers space for between twelve and eighteen passengers, in maximum comfort. The entirely new construction method means that vibration levels are kept to a minimum, while noise levels in the cabin remain pleasant. The seats are of course extremely welcoming, and the presence of air conditioning make both air quality and temperature level in the cabin very comfortable.

FLEET Having started in 1997 with just one helicopter in Ostend, Belgium, NHV currently operates 26 medium-weight helicopters and 2 heavyweight models. The new EC175 aircraft raise the

total number of helicopters in the NHV fleet to 38 (when the latest additions are delivered) in 2016. The takeover of Blueway announced by NHV in 2014 means that alongside the further fleet expansion plans, these new EC175s will soon be part of a large Airbus Helicopters fleet, once the Blueway takeover has been concluded.

this new design, more flying hours can be achieved with the aircraft than with the previous versions. This new helicopter is also said to be far less sensitive to erosion than its predecessors.

POSSIBILITIES The EC175 has a maximum range of 600 nautical miles and a cruising speed of 150 knots. The aircraft can remain in the air for an uninterrupted period of between 5.5 and 6 hours (depending on altitude). The Two Pratt and Whitney turbo engines can together generate a maximum speed of 175 knots. Given the low maintenance requirements of

The first new helicopter turning onto the platform outside the NHV hangar.

MMS MARINE SERVICES SUPPLIES PUSH BOATS AND PUSH BARGES WORLDWIDE Push boats and push barges from the Netherlands and other European countries are highly popular in South America, Africa, Sierra Leone and the countries of Eastern Europe along the Danube. The international shipping brokers Mouthaan Marine Services (MMS) arrange the purchase, transport, inspection, alteration, insurance and all other necessary aspects needed for delivering the vessels to the customer’s doorstep.

André Oerlemans

The push boat Arctic was loaded on board a sea carrier in the port of Rotterdam, and is currently en route to Montevideo in Uruguay.

Over the past few years, MMS has established a large international network, and today supplies mainly push boats and push barges across the globe, to countries including Uruguay, Paraguay, Sierra Leone, England, France and the various countries along the Danube. “Compared with the vessels that travel on rivers in those countries, our European push barges and push boats are of higher quality,” explained founder and director of MMS, Peter Mouthaan. “In South America, for example, push boats are employed that previously saw service in Central America on the Mississippi river. Their qua-

lity is moderate at best. Now that clients are looking for better-quality vessels, they are sourcing them from Europe.” The Dutch boats that travel on the Rhine offer the ideal draught for the rivers of South America. While they sail here with four or six barges, the convoys they are required to transport on the other side of the ocean are between two and three times that size. Furthermore, they travel an average of 2000 miles between Brazil and Argentina, non-stop.

MMS director Peter Mouthaan.

MODERN MATERIAL “Following a few adjustments, our vessels are ideally suited to the task, and being far younger, offer far better technical specifications than the American material,” suggested Mouthaan. “Given the inland shipping crisis in Europe, with clear overcapacity, various boats and push barges have been removed for example from the river Rhine, and sold on to those countries, or deployed by MMS, in collaboration with Western European

operators.” In total, MMS has already supplied ten push boats and fifteen push barges to foreign buyers. Numbers are growing in relation to domestic turnover. “We are hard at work spreading our international wings,” continued Mouthaan. “We receive instructions from our South American and African business relations to find equipment; we check out what is available on the market, and on their behalf, deliver the vessel to their doorstep.” The service provided by MMS includes brokerage, the purchase and sale, repairs, technical alterations, inspections, classification, insurance, transport, customs formalities and any other tasks that have to be undertaken on behalf of the client. One customer in Uruguay previously purchased the push boat Scaldis. The vessel was so much to his taste, that a second push boat, the Arctic, was recently purchased. The Arctic was loaded onto a sea carrier in the port of Rotterdam at the end of last year, and is due to arrive in Montevideo at the end of January. MMS has already delivered

a series of 4500 hp push boats to Paraguay, and passed on a new project for two push boats and twelve push barges to a German Rhine shipping operator. The push boat Vanessa, pilot boat Rupel and four standard push barges have been delivered to the West African country of Sierra Leone. Within Europe, a waterbus from Dordrecht was given a second lease of life in Lithuania. For the construction of the new underground train tunnel below the river Thames in England, MMS arranged for the delivery of 4 push barges from the Czech Republic. They had seen service on the Elbe and Oder rivers, and were ideally suited for the new task,” explained Mouthaan. Scandinavian partners have also already purchased a number of push barges from the Netherlands. On top of all this work, MMS regularly receives order to purchase tugboats.

SERVICES AND SHIPPING Until the age of thirty, Mouthaan himself was captain on his own push boat operated by Mouttrans. He then worked for Eurobulk, that was subsequently taken over by the French stock exchange-quoted Touax SA group, were he was employed as director, for six years. In 2004, he started his own business, MMS. MMS Marine Services is the international ship brokerage and project division. The company brokers the purchase and sale of every conceivable vessel type for Dutch and foreign inland shipping operators, but specialises in push boats, push barges and tugboats. The other division, MMS Shipping BV, is a transport and management company that manages inland shipping vessels on behalf of groups of investors. In this capacity, for various partners including shipping operators and cargo transporters, MMS supplies shipping tonnage on a charter and rental basis, at home and abroad, for short and longer periods. In Mouthaan’s words, “On average we manage some 50,000 tonnes of cargo capacity.”

4 QUESTIONS FOR … PIETER ‘T HART What are the latest developments and trends in the offshore sector? Who are the people behind them, and what are their motivations? Groenervaren.nl, the platform for knowledge sharing about sustainability issues and innovation in the maritime sector, aims to find out, with four questions.

1 ∠ WHAT RELATIONSHIP DOES KOERS EN VAART HAVE WITH THE OFFSHORE INDUSTRY? “Koers & Vaart has an extensive network of companies operating in the maritime sector and the offshore industry.

ABOUT GROENERVAREN Groenervaren is the source of information for and from maritime professionals in the form of an independent, online platform focused on sharing knowledge about innovation, sustainability, trends, tips & tricks within the maritime sector. Subjects covered by Groenervaren range from propulsion systems, via regulations and legislation, through to waste substances, fuel economy and grants and subsidies. www.groenervaren.nl.

We are currently working on a project – EkoVation – the objective of which is to develop and build an innovative multipurpose vessel together with a shipping operator and eighteen maritime and offshore suppliers, that is capable of undertaking both offshore and fishery-related activities. Koers & Vaart is also investigating the possibilities for introducing alternative fuels in the offshore sector, and over the past few years has been closely involved in the project for improving cooperation in the maritime and offshore chain.”

2 ∠ WHAT IS THE INTENTION OF EKO-VATION? “Eko-Vation is a project according to which a multipurpose vessel will be deployed to carry out both offshore and fishery-related activities throughout the year. As a result, deployability of the platform will be considerably increased, while the costs for both offshore and fishery activities are slashed. The vessel will be deployed for offshore services such as diving support and as a support vessel for maintenance on wind farms, but could also be used for government inspection tasks. Finally, the vessel will be suitable for catching flatfish. There are already examples of the multipurpose deployment of fishing boats in Norway, in the form of fishing activities combined with seismological surveys.”

3 ∠ WHY IS THERE DEMAND FOR THIS TYPE OF APPLICATION FROM THE OFFSHORE SECTOR? “Maintenance costs for wind farms and

platforms are under considerable pressure. Over the next few years, for example, wind farms will need to cut back heavily on their operating costs. By using a vessel that is capable of both fishing and providing offshore services, we expect to be able to reduce offshore maintenance costs by some 40 percent, thus allowing wind farm operators to fulfil their obligations. The vessel will be larger than traditional fishing boats, but smaller than the platform supply vessels and diving support vessels currently in use, thereby making it an interesting proposition. The concept also offers excellent possibilities for government inspection tasks as a means of further reducing operating costs, by making use of more efficient platforms, capable of multipurpose deployment.”

4 ∠ WHEN IS THE BREAKTHROUGH EXPECTED? “The breakthrough will have been achieved when a number of vessels of this kind are built in series, thereby demonstrating that the innovative concept does indeed lead to cost reductions for the customer, as well as being a commercially-attractive product for the parties who invest in the fleet. We expect the first vessel to be completed in 2016.”

RENOVATION WORK AT HENDRIK VEDER GROUP’S HOME BASE Accompanied by goose bumps, a sense of pride, a fabulous celebration and an impressive corporate ďŹ lm, the Hendrik Veder Group has taken possession of its completely renovated accommodation on the Eemhavenweg in the port of Rotterdam. 370 people from all over the world were invited to enjoy a bird’s eye view provided by a camera-equipped drone, as it zoomed in on the business, the impressive work involving tonnes of steel cables and the completely renovated interior. The roots of Hendrik Veder in Rotterdam stretch back to the year 1800. The recently taken-over Van der Lee rope factory dates back even further, to the sixteenth century.

Ellen Lengkeek The company’s head offices, located according to the company’s articles in the port of Rotterdam, have acquired new cachet. In

just six months, the business has undergone a metamorphosis, and the lease contract for the location has been extended by a further ten years. The Hendrik Veder Group manufactures and supplies steel cables and the related lifting and towing equipment for both onshore and offshore activities. As a large, independent player in Europe, the recent merger provides an answer and a total solution to the previously fragmented market in this field of work. “The group was officially founded on 1 September 2012, and today represents an organisation that brings together a huge volume of knowledge and traditional skills. The takeover of the G. van der Lee Rope Factory followed one year later. Van der Lee was itself established in the sixteenth century, and was still managed by the direct descendants of Jan Pietersz van der Lee (1545-1613), making it the oldest family business in the Netherlands. A fantastic company, explained Jeroen Sant-

croos, marketing and business development spokesman of the Hendrik Veder Group. “The Group can now justifiably describe itself as one of the leading, independent players on the European market. With an extensive distribution network and subsidiaries in eight European countries, and with the largest production and test facilities on

the continent, we are well represented in this part of the world. The Hendrik Veder Group is active in the field of heavy offshore lifting, specialising in cable laid slings and grommet slings. The group companies are also wholesale traders for cables in the industrial, offshore, maritime, automotive and agricultural markets, and operate in the distribution business. The outdoor site available to the Hendrik Veder Group on the Eemhavenweg was recently expanded by a further 15,000 m2 of storage space. The magnificent new corporate film can be viewed on the Hendrik Veder Group site: www.hendrikvedergroup.com.

VETH PROPULSION: GLOBAL PLAYER WITH THE FLEXIBILITY OF A FAMILY BUSINESS Veth Propulsion has grown from a oneman business in 1951 to a global player in 2015 with a staff of 150. A household name in thrusters in all shapes and sizes, the Papendrecht-based business is active in a variety of sectors, with offshore and dredging as the main spearheads.

Leo van Teeffelen Cornelis Veth started the company by repairing engines for inland shipping vessels. His one-man business has grown into a fullservice engine and generator division with dealerships for Scania and Agro SisuDiesel. In 1969, Cornelis’ son Jan Veth invented the Veth-Jet, an ingenious bow thruster that draws in water via a horizontal screw, and then forces it back out through a square tunnel. This method meant that the Veth-Jet can even be deployed as an emergency propulsion or braking system. This was the first of a series of innovative thrusters, including the 360 degree-rotatable Z-drive propulsion system introduced in 1986, which has now become the gold standard in passenger shipping. Jan’s son Erik took over the

reins in 2002, and under his management, the family business has grown into today’s global enterprise. An in-house electrical engineering division provides the hardware and software for the control panels, while the research & development division is responsible for ever further development of the products. “Whatever we do, quality, service, innovation and sustainability are our core values. At Veth Propulsion, they are not mere words, but the principles on the basis of which we aim to make a true difference,” General Sales Manager Martin van der Jagt explained. He offers two recent examples.

TO TURN YOUR WORLD A thruster by Veth Propulsion. A typical Dutch product. The end result is robust, powerful and inspired by your specific needs. You can expect a personal and down-to-earth approach and a reliable image and brand awareness in the market. Veth Propulsion is a customer-oriented international thruster manufacturer. farms at sea. Van der Jagt explains: “This project turned out to be a real challenge. We were asked to develop a system that enables the platform to propel itself and maintain its precise position by means of dynamic positioning, using our thrusters. The system also had to be portable, so that it could be used on other platforms. In response, we supplied four retractable L-drives, type VL-900, a control container and power containers that house four Caterpillar C32 main generator sets and four SisuDiesel back-up generator sets. The whole system is classified as DPS2 under ABS.” Veth Propulsion is currently building two Veth Z-drives, type VZ-1800 and a Veth tunnel thruster, type VT-550, for yet another wind farm support vessel.

bution from Veth Propulsion consisted of two Veth Z-drives, type VZ-900, a retractable Veth L-drive, type VL-400 and a Veth Tunnel Thruster, type VT-700. To comply with the Clean Ship notation from Bureau Veritas, Veth Propulsion developed a new seal system for the thrusters. These seals separate a large amount of lubricant from the environment – thus meeting environmental standards while maintaining the performance of our high capacity thrusters. “We create ideas that complement our client’s thinking, so as to meet their requirements, and arrive at a suitable, creative solution,” Van der Jagt continued. A second example of total craftsmanship is the contribution provided by Veth Propulsion to the Jack-up Barge JB 118. This jack-up platform, measuring 76 by 40 metres operated by Jack-up Barge B.V. in Sliedrecht, is intended for the construction and maintenance of wind

The company has agencies on almost every continent, the most recent of which was opened in Dubai: Exalto Emirates. It goes without saying that Veth Propulsion also attends a number of international trade fairs, but contrary to the general trend, the company continues to operate from a home base in the Netherlands as efficiently as possible. Fabrication complies with the Lean Manufacturing system, the aim of which is to create maximum value at minimum effort, resulting in higher production quality, lower production costs and shorter lead times. This system for example relies on the use of efficient workstations and application of the just-in-time principle. In order to keep up with the constant growth of the business, the first pile was driven at the start of this year for a brand-new, larger and sustainable office and production facilities, on the Nanengat, not far from the current location in Papendrecht. DRILLING RESTARTED ON NORWEGIAN SHELF A number of drilling rigs owned by Statoil are now at work or ready to start work on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. The semi-submersible drilling rig Songa Dee operated by Songa Offshore is for example active off the Norwegian coast, in the Gullfaks field. Previously, the rig underwent a Special Periodic Survey at the yard in Invergordon, Scotland. In addition to the Songa Dee, the Songa Delta and Songa Trym are also both at work on behalf of Statoil. In the Balder field, with its semi-submersible rig West Alpha, ExxonMobil has been permitted to install the undersea facilities needed to put a well into production. The Balder field is the oldest on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, ‘discovered’ way back

STATOIL DRILLS FOR OIL IN KRAFLA NORTH The drilling rig Transocean Leader, on behalf of the consortium Statoil, Det norske and Svenska Exploration has sunk wells at a depth of more than 4000 metres in the Krafla North oil field (to the southwest of Norway’s most southerly point). The local water depth is 105 metres. The first well has been numbered 30/11-10, and is to be followed by its twin (30/11-10 A) in the nearby Krafla Main field. A lateral connection will be drilled to the second location, from 30/11-10. Reserves in both fields are estimated at 75 and 143 million drums of oil equivalent, respectively.

in 1967. However, due to the discovery two years later of the far larger Ekofisk field, Balder was soon forgotten, and earmarked as ‘economically uninteresting’. Nonetheless, in 1999, ExxonMobil started exploration work, as sole operator. New facilities have now been added. The West Alpha is owned by Seadrill, and operated by North Atlantic Drilling. Until recently, the drilling rig was active in the (Russian) Kara Sea, at the Universitetskaya-1 location, but had to halt work following the announcement of sanctions against Russia, by the United States. The West Alpha was specially fabricated for deep-sea operations in Arctic waters.

Kosmos Energy claims to have discovered retrievable quantities of oil in the FEL /13 and FEL 3/13 sectors in the South Porcupine Bassin (to the west of Cork) on behalf of Europa Oil & Gas (Holdings). The claim is based on a 3D seismic survey carried out in 2013 as a follow-up to a previous 2D seismic survey. Europa expects to be able to release more information about the size of both fields, during the first half of 2015. The operator hopes to be able to drill and install production units in 2016.

TRICO LEAVES CALLING CARD FOR OFFSHORE SECTOR WITH TESS FABRICATION John van de Wijgaart alongside the Tess, at the Trico Shipyard for finishing.

With the construction of the multifunctional guard, support and supply vessels Tess and Miranda, Trico Shipyard has left its calling card with the offshore sector. Both vessels are under construction on behalf of Van Laar Maritime based in IJmuiden. The first vessel, Tess, is due to be handed over in early March.

André Oerlemans As main contractor and supervisor, Trico is responsible for the entire construction project. The yard outsourced fabrication of the hulls to ATS in Flushing, and is completing the finishing work at its own yard in Rotterdam, both in just fourteen weeks. The vessels are to be deployed as guard and support craft for large soil survey vessels, and will carry out supply work and crew changes. Both will be deployable in a range of functions. Because they will be operated at low speed or low power for much of the

time, the vessels have been equipped with diesel-electric propulsion systems. The Tess is equipped with three Cummins generator sets each producing 440 kilowatt and two 550 kWe thrusters from Veth Propulsion. To sail at full speed, all three generator sets must be run simultaneously, but for the majority of her tasks, just one unit is sufficient. “Thanks to this diesel-electric propulsion, the vessel can sail economically and efficiently,” explained CEO John van de Wijgaart, of Trico Shipyard.

WORLDWIDE The vessel has been built so that she can spend months at sea. There is sufficient fuel, water, refrigeration and freezing capacity for three months, and eight cabins with eighteen bunks. Van Laar Maritime offers a fleet comprising dozens of vessels, deployed for the offshore, wind, oil and gas industry, from the base of operations in IJmuiden. During the nineteen nineties, the company started by converting fishing boats into

guard vessels for the offshore industry, and deploying ships worldwide for standby and guard work, from the African and Caribbean coastlines right through to the North Sea. Converted fishing cutters are also deployed as survey and diving inspection vessels, and as support vessels for seismographic surveys. The Tess and Miranda will be the 28th and 29th members of the fleet, respectively. “These are the first vessels ever built completely from scratch by Van Laar,” explained Van de Wijgaart. “And for us it is the first time we have ever built a vessel of this type for the offshore industry, a market we are keen to break into. It is no coincidence that we are based in Rotterdam, the perfect location for supplying both the shipping and offshore sectors. In principle, the technology is not so different from building for the inland shipping sector. Only the class and regulations differ, and are stricter.”

NEW TRUMP Trico is collaborating on both vessels with its regular specialists and subcontractors. Trico Piping is responsible for all pipework for the numerous fuel tanks and engine rooms. In the past, Trico has above all been involved in repair work for the offshore industry, for example on the Boskalis maritime fleet and the floating shearlegs operated by Bonn & Mees. As Van de Wijgaart explained, “That work is undertaken at the customer’s location, and the onsite approach gives us a clear advantage. The customer gives us a call and we immediately deploy the necessary staff.” The fabrication of multifunctional vessels is a new trump in our pack. Specially for this sector, Trico took on William Sakko, a man with the necessary knowledge and experience in the offshore and shipping markets. “No job is too much and we can build whatever the customer wants, from a multicat to a supply vessel and from a crew tender to a tugboat,” concluded Van de Wijgaart.
