2 be the first ever ship-shaped FPSO carried by the Dockwise Vanguard,” explained spokesperson for the sea transport operator Dockwise b.v, Sven Kuit. With offices in Breda, Dockwise b.v. is a fully-owned subsidiary of Koninklijke Boskalis Westminster N.V.
OFFSHORE GIANT VIA ROTTERDAM TO FAR EAST
EXTREME OBJECTS The Dockwise Vanguard is a vessel capable of transporting extremely large objects. As Kuit continued, “The Vanguard is the world’s largest semi-submersible heavy cargo carrier, and as such offers unmatched capabilities for transporting fully-integrated offshore structures and installations, including FPSOs. The Dockwise Vanguard has a carrying capacity in excess of 110,000 tonnes, and a bowless deck with a free surface area of 275 by 70 metres. Because the vessel has no raised bow or even conventional forecastle structure, the cargo is able to protrude at both front and rear.” FPSO Goliat here in full view on board the Dockwise Vanguard.

Rotterdam can once again look forward to a visit by a special offshore giant, the Dockwise Vanguard. The largest semi-submersible cargo carrier owned by global operator Boskalis will be visiting Rotterdam, to take on board a special cargo. The mega transport operation soon to start in the Netherlands will involve the Armada Intrepid, which will be carried halfway round the world from Rotterdam, to the Far East.
Ellen Lengkeek To date, the largest cargo ever carried by the Dockwise Vanguard was the Floating Production, Storage and Offloading Vessel (FPSO) Goliat for the Italian oil company ENI, taken on board in Geoje, in South Korea. During that operation, the Dockwise Vanguard was submerged, and the cargo placed on deck, via the float over method. The Goliat was built at the Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) yard in South Korea, on behalf of ENI, the company that will also be operating the FPSO. With a diameter of 107
metres, the Goliat was the largest cargo ever loaded on board the Dockwise Vanguard. The FPSO travelled via the Cape of Good Hope to Northern Europe, where it was unloaded last month. The crew of the Dockwise Vanguard is currently making preparations for its next assignment. “For Bumi Armada Offshore, Dockwise will be sailing the FPSO Armada Intrepid (formerly the BP Schiehallion) from Rotterdam to the Far East. The FPSO, weighing 42,000 tonnes and measuring 245 metres long and 45 metres wide, will
SEA TRANSPORT Parent company Boskalis, with head offices in Papendrecht near Rotterdam, operates an extensive fleet of around one thousand vessels and workboats, suitable for deployment on specific projects. Dockwise Shipping BV is an operator specialising in heavy sea transport operations. The company was established in 1993 following the merger between Wijsmuller Transport and Dock Express Shipping. The customer base for heavy transport operations is primarily found in the oil industry for whom Dockwise mainly transports oil platforms and other large and heavy objects. Dockwise is also involved in the transport of luxury yachts, ships, factory components and military materiel. The Breda-based company has a fleet of twenty semi-submersible transport vessels in the variants open deck, dual cargo, docktype and yacht carriers.
MUCH INTEREST IN STCW HIGH VOLTAGE TRAINING Major offshore companies including Allseas, Boskalis, Damen, Heerema, Maersk, Van Oord and the Jan de Null Group are sending large numbers of their staff to attend inservice training: STCW High Voltage. Quercus Technical Services recently registered its five hundredth seagoing course participant. The organisation is responsible for training, inspections and advisory services for offshore, industrial, engineering and consultancy firms. Quercus specialises in high voltage, low voltage and explosion safety (ATE, Complex and Ice 05). The specialisations cover electrical operations and safe working on or close to electrical installations. Maritime officers and seagoing (chief) mechanics and engineers are required to attend in-service training in order to keep their certificate of competency valid beyond December 2016. This requirement has been taken up in the Maritime Crews Act, in response to the Manila amendments to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) for maritime crews. The aim of in-service training is to increase the employability of crew members, and to prevent accidents involving high voltage. Quercus will be launching the STCW High voltage training programme in Delfzijl, in April. Following on from Den Helder, IJmuiden, Zoetermeer and Zwolle, this will be the fifth training location where crew members can be taught to recognise the dangers of electricity.

The PSV-2700 is primary designed for offshore supply of mud, brine, fuel and containers. She has two propellers, electric driven, and two bow thrusters which provide the propulsion for dynamic positioning (DP2) and maximum maneuverability. Because of the optimized low freeboard the vessel is also suitable for near surface activities. She has a length of 72.03 meters, beam of 15.60 meters and total deadweight of 2700 ton.
Kriesels Scheepsmakelaar BV together with a shipyard recently launched a brand new diving support vessel design. The DSV-60 is designed for offshore diving activities and is a medium sized DSV providing an accommodation for a complement of 60 persons complying to the requirements of the SPS code. With the installed propulsion consisting of four azimuth thrusters, two aft and two forward, a highly efficient dynamic positioning with a lot of capacity is created. This vessel is suitable for a variety of diving support activities mainly because of her deck and hold capacity in combination with the installed 50 tons crane.
The OSV-100 is a compact and economical offshore support vessel capable of doing several offshore operations such as diving support, inspection, maintenance and repair activities. She has a total capacity of 100 persons, a moonpool, helideck and various optional crane capacities can be installed. The main crane capacity is 150 tons and an auxiliary crane of 24 tons is included. ROMETAL BV OFFERS STRUCTURAL TOTAL SOLUTIONS He then revealed a fabulous example of a recent order for securing systems for monopiles for wind turbines at sea. Thanks to a special construction, the monopiles for these wind turbines are not only transported fully secured, but are positioned using a hydraulic system that subsequently enables them to be installed on the seabed. Here, once again, consideration was given to supplying and delivering a total concept, rather than just part of the project.
Rometal BV are specialists in the project-based fabrication of (high tension) steel structures and complete projects for the onshore and offshore industry, crane building, the heavy lift industry and the maritime sector, and for dredging operators. “We prefer to work from concept right through to handover and installation on location or on board,” opened Commercial Director Martijn van Manen.
Leo van Teeffelen To be able to manage the entire process, you need to have enough experience in house, access to the right people and be able to offer the ideal production facilities. All those conditions are now met. Rometal BV was established in 2000 by its current Director Gert-Jan van Utrecht. Under his leadership, in just fifteen years, Rometal BV has grown to become a business that employs more than 100 people, more than 80 percent of whom are operators. Van Manen explained, “We are now proud holders of ISO 9001, and are in the concluding stages of ISO 3834, VCA and EN 1090 certification.”
ideal address for (load) testing. We have recently added the ability to finish the products with hydraulic and electrical systems, in many cases in line with the requirements and procedures imposed by the relevant classification offices.”
TURNKEY Certification for High Tension Steel S355, S690, S890 and S960 according to Lloyd’s Register was the essential foundation for the ability to supply a broad and complete range of products on the basis of EPCI (Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Installation). As Van Manen explained, “There are few limits to what we can do. We start off by developing

the concept, in close consultation with the customer. We then provide the (detail) engineering work. At Rometal, procurement not only means pure purchasing, but also monitoring the process of putting the materials into production; in other words, we take over the entire process of planning, stock control and logistics. For urgent orders we can usually rely on our own stocks of steel. We are specialists in fabricating a variety of structures, and we prefer to also carry out the installation work to make the whole thing a turnkey project.”
PRODUCTION FACILITIES The third condition, production facilities, is also well covered. Martijn van Manen continued, “In the Netherlands, on the Moerdijk industrial estate we have 3,500 m² divided between two locations in the port area of Moerdijk, alongside the Hollands Diep waterway.” A waterside location makes it possible to directly mobilise and transport the physically ever-larger products and structures by water. “We also operate a production facility in Brasov, in Rumania, that occupies around 7,500 m². All of these locations have become regular ports of call for our valued customers where we are able to fabricate new steel structures and complete products, as well as carrying out modifications and repair work. We are also the

CHARACTERISTICS No matter how large projects become, at the end of the day, they are still undertaken by people. And at Rometal BV, the human approach is reflected in the characteristics flexibility, low threshold, approachability and a practical attitude. Van Manen continued, “We join forces with our customers to achieve the final objective, to ensure that we meet the deadlines and to take away the worries of our customers. Every Friday we issue a progress report with photographs, showing exactly the current status of the project. Many of our customers are themselves engineering firms, OEM manufacturers in the crane and heavy lift sector or from the onshore and offshore industry, and marine contractors, on whose behalf we elaborate and execute structural solutions. And by structural we mean both contributing ideas, and working alongside our clients in achieving the overall objective, namely ‘a fit for purpose delivery and installation’.” Van Manen ended by addressing all our readers, with the words, “For you, too, we hope to become a reliable partner in the near future! For information about our company, please visit our website: www.rometal.nl/en. If you would prefer a face to face meeting, please do not hesitate to get in touch. We look forward to hearing from you!”

BRIDGES2000 HAS AMBITION TO BECOME GLOBAL OFFSHORE PLAYER As a company that builds, supplies and rents out high-quality, solid, lightweight gangways, bridges, mooring jetties and pontoons, BRIDGES2000 has acquired a permanent position in the maritime sector with a regular client base including Van Oord, major refineries, tank transhipment companies, builders of wind turbines, builders of wind turbines and cruise terminals. Nonetheless, the company still wishes to spread its wings globally, with the aim of serving more international customers in the offshore and maritime sectors.
André Oerlemans The motto of BRIDGES2000 reads, ‘If it has to be fast and good’. The company offers every conceivable type of tailor-made solution to help people safely onto ships, terminals, docksides, offshore projects and onshore storage tanks. Bridges and gangways sometimes have to bridge a gap of up to 40 metres, or carry thousands of visitors a day. The bridges, gangways and scaffolding systems from BRIDGES2000 are produced from lightweight aluminium and steel, and guarantee a long service life. “Aluminium is a strong material, that is also extremely lightweight. It is a material that brings together all our knowledge and expertise. We engineer and fabricate everything, tailor-made, to meet the wishes of the customer,” explained CEO Hendrik van der Ham. Since he founded the company in 1999, business has grown considerably. The next step is to tackle the global market. As Van der
Ham continued, “We wish to become a global player for offshore companies, refineries, cruise terminals and wind farms. In terms of price, quality, strength and weight, we are already tough competitors for other suppliers.”
SAFE ACCESSIBILITY BRIDGES2000 has a solid customer base among big name businesses, including the international dredging and offshore operator Van Oord. During the naming ceremony for the new 123 metre-long and 28 metre-wide cable layer Nexus in Rotterdam, in mid March, BRIDGES2000 supplied all the gangways needed to transport invited guests and visitors safely on board and back to shore. Special platforms were actually mounted on board the vessel. The company provided similar services during the commissioning celebrations and other ceremonial occasions involving the Pioneering Spirit, the world’s largest ship. “Van Oord launches a new vessel somewhere in the world, every three or four months, and we are always on the job making sure that all the moments of celebration run smoothly, thanks to our safe accessibility,” continued Van der Ham.

world’s largest cruise ship, that visited cruise terminal Rotterdam, in 2014. “Cruise terminals in Rotterdam and other port cities have been regular customers of our company, for many years. Very strict requirements are imposed on gangways and bridges of this kind, in terms of both safety and comfort,” explained Van der Ham. “People need to be able to travel from ship to shore and back again, in the dry, without too much of a bumpy ride, and gangways and bridges must also guarantee wheelchair access. Our bridges are designed to move up and down with the ship and the mooring jetty. And to keep the guests dry, we can even fit folding doors.”
MARKET LEADER For the offshore sector, BRIDGES2000 specialises in long, strong bridges that have the lowest possible own weight, while remaining stable, and offering maximum user friendliness. Refineries and storage companies in the ports of Moerdijk and Rotterdam are also among the regular customers. In the past, for example, the company has built special bridges between the Argos storage tanks in
the Botlek district, at a height of 30 metres, while for the construction of windfarms at sea, BRIDGES2000 supplies special bridges that transport the personnel safely between the pedestal on which the wind turbines are mounted, and the jack-up or workboat. For mooring high-sided vessels to docks where space is restricted, the company has even developed special extendable hydraulic stairways. Over the past seventeen years, BRIDGES2000 has become European market leader in all types and sizes of gangways. “Once they have come to us once, our customers always return,” suggested Van der Ham. “We may not be the world’s largest, but we are the most flexible and most specialised. All our material is certified and inspected by Bureau Veritas and ABS, and our delivery times are extremely short.” Van der Ham himself has a shipping background, and even as a young man, was forever thinking in terms of solutions. “And this is a sector in which many solutions are indeed needed,” he concluded. www.bridges2000.nl

DEN HELDER EXPANDS KOOYPUNT INDUSTRIAL ESTATE:
WASTE DISPOSAL SERVICE BEK & VERBURG ENLARGES ENVIRONMENTAL PROCESSING LINE Seven years ago, waste collection and disposal company Bek & Verburg opened premises in Den Helder; the offices and environmental processing line of the firm were located at the Kooypunt industrial estate. Just next door was the undeveloped site of Kooypunt III, the potential expansion location when there was sufficient demand for new plots. That point was reached in February 2015. The municipality of Den Helder instructed site manager, Port of Den Helder N.V., to release new plots and Bek & Verburg was the first company to take up the offer.
Jan van de Nes The collection of ships’ waste is becoming increasingly important, and the processing of that waste is very much a task for specialists. With that thought in mind, more than fifty years ago, Bek & Verburg started operating in the ports of Rotterdam, Dordrecht and Moerdijk. These locations were followed by the North Sea Canal area, and since 2008, the port of Den Helder. The company’s waste collection containers are not only installed on the well-known offshore quaysides, but also at various locations throughout the built-up area that makes up the town’s port. Bek & Verburg in fact offers its services to a wide-ranging clientele, all with the aim of relieving waste producers, by collecting regular waste flows for separation, prior to further handling at the environmental processing line at Kooypunt. During a meeting of port-related businesses on 17 February last (organised jointly with Bek & Verburg, at the company’s own site), the deed of purchase for the site expansion – onto a location immediately adjacent to the current Bek & Verburg site – was signed by Port of Den Helder Director Piet-Hein Kolff and B&V Director Daan van Mullem, in the
presence of some 150 members of the Den Helder Port and Shipping Association. Special guests at the ceremony were the civil-law notary and the Alderman for Economy and Port Affairs. Van Mullem explained to the meeting that his company had purchased a plot measuring almost 3500 square metres, with a view to establishing a socalled port reception building for marine waste. The new business will also represent a boost to commercial activities in Den Helder, since any major waste collection project of this kind will serve more than exclusively maritime ‘users’.
AIRPORT The Kooypunt industrial estate is located immediately adjacent to Den Helder Airport, and more or less opposite the town’s new still to be developed inland shipping dock. “The new site will operate as a so-called service hub,” explained port director Kolff in his speech. The industrial estate is intended for businesses offering services to port-related companies above all involved in offshore, oil and gas and wind energy. According to
In mid-February, around 150 managers of port-related businesses in Den Helder met at Bek & Verburg to witness the start of sale of plots of land at Kooypunt III, together with aldermen Kos (left) and Port Director Kolff.
Kolff, the demand for plots of land for businesses wishing to establish in Den Helder is constantly growing. “Above all thanks to the growing number of offshore and maritime enterprises interested in locating in the port area.” Daan van Mullem expressed the hope that many would follow his company’s example, by moving to Kooypunt III. Conny van den Hoff, Director of Den Helder Airport, also announced the realisation of expansion plans. The airport has acquired two large hangars on the airport site, previously operated by another Den Helder-based business. Now the hangars have changed ownership, more hangar space can be provided for aircraft from the oil and gas industry, the offshore sector and wind energy, and to fixed-wing aircraft for scheduled services. Together, the two hangars offer floor space of around
2,800 square metres, and a further 900 square metres of offices.
MEETING 4 JUNE 2015 NV Port of Den Helder, the Den Helder Port and Shipping Association and Den Helder Airport are organising a one-day promotional meeting in Den Helder, on 4 June 2015. In the morning, a visit will be paid to the offshore quaysides, with an information session discussing establishment opportunities, in the afternoon. www.northseaoffshore.nl

STANDARDISATION OF OFFSHORE VESSELS LEADS TO TITLE
KOMMER DAMEN: INDUSTRY LEADER OF THE YEAR Partly thanks to the growth of Damen Shipyards over the past few years – and in that connection the launch of a series of new standardised designs for offshore vessels –the Offshore Support Journal Conference voted chairman of the board Kommer Damen Industry Leader of the Year in London, at the end of February.
Ellen Lengkeek The title was awarded to Kommer Damen for his vision and the resultant massive growth achieved, while still noting that the business has never lost its family values, and continues to cherish its maritime heritage. Damen Shipyards Group is a Dutch group of shipbuilders, comprising more than thirty
operating companies in the Netherlands and abroad, with head offices in Gorinchem, within easy reach of the port city of Rotterdam. The company now operates 32 shipyards throughout the world, employs 9000 people, and generates annual turnover of 2 billion euro. The group was established in 1927, and since 1969 (when Kommer Damen took over the yard from his father and uncle), has built more than 5000 vessels. Today, Damen completes more than 160 vessels every year. According to the jury report, “The company’s growth is partly due to the fact that the group has time and again succeeded in developing new designs that respond to the needs of its customers. In addition, these new designs can be built in larger volumes. Under Kommer Damen’s inspiring leadership, the shipbuilding group started to focus on modular fabrication and standardisation. It is also entirely due to his efforts that Damen has spread its wings worldwide, acquiring numerous shipyards, many of them specialising in niche markets.”
SERIAL FABRICATION
Award winner Kommer Damen in London.
“Offshore ships represent a huge market, and we are continuing to invest in ever more platforms for the standardisation and fabrication of these vessels,” explained Kommer Damen when he took receipt of the award. As a result, the com-

pany is able to fabricate a whole series of similar vessels, at different yards across the world. Over the past few years, Damen has launched a whole series of new standardised designs for vessels to serve the offshore sector, including tugs and offshore support vessels, platform supply vessels and fast crew suppliers. Every year, the company hands over approximately 160 new ships to its customers throughout the world. Thanks to this unique, standardised de-
sign concept, Damen is still able to guarantee constant quality. Alongside ship design and shipbuilding, Damen Shiprepair & Conversion comprises a network of fifteen ship repair and conversion yards, right across the globe, with drydock capacity up to 420x80 metres. The conversion projects range from adapting old ships to the latest requirements and regulations, right through to the total conversion of large offshore constructions.

MARITIME PARTNERS JOIN FORCES TO PROMOTE SEA CAREERS IN DEN HELDER Businesses, teaching institutions and government bodies in Den Helder are joining forces to show school pupils and (potential) students what life is like in a maritime environment, with a form of job guarantee. With that in mind, the job and training fair Carrières Aan Zee (Careers At Sea) is due to be held on 26 March 2015.
Jan van de Nes The driving force behind the presentation of teaching programmes and the related jobs is the Maritime Campus Netherlands. The overarching organisation that brings together training institutions throughout the Kop van Noord Holland region collaborates closely with the commercial maritime players in the region. As a consequence, not only is the course content highly future-oriented (i.e. practice-based) but at the same time the offshore and maritime businesses can feel sure that the graduating students are prepared for a career in the sector.
HIGHER PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION (HBO) MINOR STUDY PROGRAMMES During the career fair, the unique demandbased higher professional education minor study programmes Oil & Gas and Offshore Wind Energy will be presented. Find out everything you ever needed to know about the various specialisations in the oil, gas and wind industry. The training institutions involved call to all those who attend to ‘Get to know this special world in the beating heart of the offshore sector, Den Helder’. The minor programmes have been developed in close collaboration with business from the sector.
The first job fair was organised in 2014 and attracted many young people to Den Helder, together with their parents/guardians. On behalf of the organisation, Eva Vosdingh Bessem explained that the first event was so successful, that it is now being following up with a second edition. “The maritime sector offers fabulous career opportunities above all combined with high job security,” she continued. Nonetheless, many young people are unaware of the study choices in the sector. “The Carrières aan Zee event offers young people, their parents and any other interested parties a unique opportunity to be introduced to learning and working in the maritime sector,” said Vosdingh Bessem.
DEMONSTRATIONS AND GUEST SPEAKERS The offshore (oil, gas and wind energy) and maritime technology sectors will be the main focus at the job and training fair. Maritime technology relates not only to maintenance and repair of ships and offshore installations, but also specific maritime study programmes such as ship management and ship control, logistic tasks on board and life at sea. To provide a clear picture of all the opportunities, information will be presented at the event about the various study programmes and career possibilities, combined with a whole range of interactive activities. Demonstrations will be provided by shipping operators, oil companies, shipyards and the Royal Dutch Navy, and to boost the overall attractiveness of the event, not

only chairwoman of the Royal Association of Dutch Ship Owners (KVNR) Tineke Netelenbos but also a series of other guests speakers will be holding presentations about careers at sea. These will include Commander Huub Hulsker of the Royal Dutch Navy, who will bring prospective students up to date on the dynamic and challenging life in the Navy. A representative of the worldwide-renowned offshore business Allseas will be speaking about the brand-new offshore vessel, the largest in the world, the Pioneering Spirit, while a whole raft of companies will be attending the career fair including NV Port of Den Helder, temporary employment agency Olympia, the Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij, Bluestream, Multimetaal, the overarching offshore organisations IRO and Nogepa, Stork, Den Helder Airport, of course the Royal Dutch Navy, Damen shipyards, the knowledge centre Wind op Zee and Imares Wageningen.
EDUCATION Although the informative event is primarily intended for young people from year 8 of primary education, and for pupils from secondary and senior secondary vocational education, this year
there will also be attention for students from higher professional education and university students, as well as job seekers. Specifically for these latter two groups, a complete vacancy fair has been organised in building 66 (the so-called Steam Engine building at Willemsoord). The following educational institutions will also be attending: the Nautical College, the Opleidingsbedrijf InstallatieWerk, the senior secondary vocational education technical school HMC, the Universities of Applied Sciences InHolland, NHL Hogeschool Leeuwarden and LS&T Leeuwarden, Tetrix Techniek Opleidingen and the Regional Training Centre for the Kop van NoordHolland region. www.carrieresaanzee.nl

OFFSHORE WIND ENERGY MEANS NEW SHIPS
DEN HELDER HOMEPORT TO WIND FARM SUPPORT VESSELS While the oil and gas industry is coming under ever greater pressure due to low oil prices – in Scotland, dismissals are becoming commonplace particularly among oil operators in Aberdeen and the surrounding area – the opportunities for the wind energy market appear to be growing. A number of logistic companies are responding by launching vessels designed specially to support wind farms. And all of them are to operate from Den Helder.
Jan van de Nes In December 2014, the 66.4 metre-long and more than 13 metre-wide Glomar Wave was the first new multipurpose offshore support vessel to visit the port of Den Helder. The Wave (the name is an acronym for Windfarm Accommodation Vessel E-type) ordered in Poland by the Den Helder-based company Glomar Offshore Wind Support BV, is equipped with an Ampelmann hydraulic lift that following mooring compensates for wave movement on the gangway linking the moving vessel and the statically-mounted wind turbine. The lift enables the service engineers to walk to and from the wind turbine from the deck of the ship, safely and without any disturbance due to sea swell. When travelling backwards and forwards carrying tools to and from the fully-equipped workshop on board the vessel, this is a useful characteristic. The vessel with its dynamic positioning capability is equipped with a whole raft of modern (green) systems. The name designation E-type stands for Energy Efficient (propulsion and onboard power supply), Environmentally-friendly
The Glomar Wave was the first new support vessel to be based in Den Helder.
and Economical (in terms of fuel consumption). Glomar Shipmanagement BV, the sister company to Glomar Wind Support, also deploys Fast Crew Suppliers (FCS) for rapidly transporting its engineers between the wind farms and the port of Den Helder. However, those vessels have no on-board workshop and no overnight accommodation facilities.
NUMBERS 2 AND 3 Acta Marine, colleague and competitor of Glomar also based in Den Helder, has ordered fabrication of a new windfarm support vessel in Poland, the Acta Orion. This is of course also a DP-II vessel, that has signed a long-term charter with Van Oord BV, the company responsible for building the new Gemini windfarm to the north of Groningen. The Acta Orion will be equipped with two mooring points for fast crew supply
and will offer overnight accommodation to approx. 75 people. The intention is that the Acta Orion will operate as a type of mother ship, while engineering staff will be carried from and to the wind turbines by FCS. The 108 metre-long and 16 metre-wide new support vessel is due to be launched in September 2015. Number three in this series of new support vessels is the Kroonborg, built for Wagenborg at the Niestern Sander shipyard in Delfzijl. The 80 metre-long vessel offers the same facilities as the two other support vessels (accommodation for in this case 60 people, a workshop, warehouse and an Ampelmann system for swell compensation when moored to a platform) but will not be deployed for serving wind turbines. Wagenborg has chartered the Kroonborg to NAM for maintenance work on the numerous small gas production platforms on the Dutch Continental Shelf, with no regular crew, and no crew ac-
commodation. The Kroonborg is one of the first vessels to operate using GTL as fuel (see box).
GAS-TO-LIQUIDS The new generations of ship fuels come in a variety of types. GTL (Gas-toLiquids) is just one. This synthetic diesel is produced from gas. Producer Shell describes Shell GTL Fuel as ultra-clean and biodegradable. The product is created via chemical transformation (in the so-called Fischer-Tropsch process) which was in fact developed in the nineteen twenties by the two German scientists, Fischer and Tropsch. Shell has completed more than 35 years of research into the project, which it has now launched on the market.

NEW LEGISLATION CALLS FOR THE VECTOR MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT APPROACH In part in the light of the tragic Deepwater Horizon, Vector Maintenance Management in Den Helder has seen the European Union place offshore safety high on the agenda, resulting in EU Directive 2013. Operators will need to make the necessary preparations. “We have developed a series of tools to help them,” explained board members Joost de Boer, Robert Krauweel and René Pabst.
Jan van de Nes The aim of the Directive is to reduce the risk of severe accidents and environmental damage during the entire lifecycle from exploration through to production. The elaboration of the Directive takes the form of an unequivocal EU-wide legal framework based on worldwide best practices. As from 19 July 2015, the Directive will acquire legal effect, and will be put into national legislation by every Member State. The industry will have to make adjustments to planned operations starting in July 2016, and to existing operations starting in July 2018. “If you also take account of the huge downturn in income in the oil and gas sector, the inevitable conclusion is that things will have to change,” explained the various board members of Vector. The government is calling for changes. How will the operators present the details of their processes? “We are not exactly in favour of eradicating inspectors, but we do propose that the role of the inspectors as on-board supervisors be reduced. They should simply validate the methods and findings, on the basis of reports drawn up by the maintenance or internal inspection service,” suggested De Boer, along the lines of: “Can I take a look at that document, followed by perhaps a limited on-site inspection.” But how does an operator draw up management
reports that are sufficiently transparent? How do you make sure your staff know what procedures and methods to employ? “You often see workers knowing everything there is to know about specific maintenance tasks, but nothing about the process that precedes or follows their activity,” said Pabst. For example, ‘naturally’ a maintenance engineer has no knowledge of the preceding purchasing procedures. “But if the staff at
the purchase department are informed in good time, they are often able to work more cost effectively,” suggested Krauweel. The same applies for such aspects as material, logistics and job planning. By improving interaction between different disciplines, you can often achieve huge savings, as well as improving process efficiency at the same time. And there is almost always a knockon improvement in the level of safety and quality; in other words, a win-win situation all-round.
RETURN ON EDUCATION Pabst continued, “Our core business is producing a blueprint for the process in the form of a Maintenance, Inspection, Asset Inte-
The board of Vector Maintenance Management, l. to r. Joost de Boer, Robert Krauweel, René Pabst, constantly responds to the latest developments in the offshore world with a view to optimising the business processes at operators, and minimising logistic costs.
grity, Policy & Strategy document. We have now also moved on from Maintenance and Inspection methods to Structuring the management system, all harmonised to match the organisation: an integrated approach.” An analysis of existing processes, identification of bottlenecks or aspects that increase costs, elaboration of improvements and subsequent description of new processes and implementation in a management system are all complex processes. “We have developed a method that can be used for a range of different operators. Via an in-depth analysis of maintenance data from our clients, we calculate optimum strategies and maintenance frequencies. Naturally, maximum safety, reliability and availability at the lowest possible cost are the central points of focus. This approach enables us to offer the ideal concept for every client, on the basis of the perfect balance between economic and statutory targets. Of course, any such project demands an investment by the client. But to date, the Return On Investment (ROI) point has always been achieved, within the course of the project. On the other hand, we do realise that you have to teach the employees of the various companies to make use of these new strategies and procedures,” continued De Boer. As a consequence, Vector Maintenance Management has developed training programmes to teach the staff of the various operators to implement the entire maintenance process in line with the newly developed rules. “It is not about teaching them to rethink their work,” grinned Pabst, “It is all about offering them the ideal management method.” “And forms of cooperation,” added Krauweel. “You create a clear overall view, and prevent individual employees focusing just on their own specialisation, or developing tunnel vision. As a result, the overall structure and methods are supported by the entire organisation and all members of staff. In other words, ROI from ROE: Return on Education!”

HCA PROJECT SUPPORT MOVES FROM OOSTERHOUT TO NEW PREMISES IN ROTTERDAM Since early March, the head offices of HCA Project Support have been based in brandnew premises at 67 Scheepsbouwweg, in Rotterdam. The view across the Heysehaven enables head office staff to literally see the personnel seconded from HCA, at work.
Leo van Teeffelen Managing Director Chris van Werkhoven and Sales & Development Manager Leonie Stoppelenburg showed us the ins and outs of the attractive new 500 m² offices, almost twice the size of the former premises in Oosterhout. The location is also far more suitable, with the port and Condor Heavy Services as neighbours.
INTERNATIONAL The origins of the business lie with Hassink Marine and Industrial Services BV in Ridderkerk. This company, owned by brothers Arie & Chris Werkhoven, can look back on decades of success in shipbuilding, dredging and the fabrication of offshore modules. In the past, the company depended on temporary employment agencies for welding, cutting, grinding, cleaning and finishing. To maintain greater control and to guarantee continuity, the brothers decided in 2010 to take over an employment agency, for themselves. They were joined in mid2011 by Ted van den Berg, who is responsible for the Polish division of HCA. As well as the new head offices, a new project office has been opened in the Netherlands in Delfzijl /Eemshaven, two offices have been opened in Poland (in Gdynia and Warsaw), there is

an office in Vigo in Spain, and the existing office in Rumania is relocating to Bucharest. After the summer, a new office is due to be opened in Copenhagen in Denmark.
FORMULA ,,We have invested and will continue to invest heavily in HCA Project Support. Every investment comes with a risk, but we have thought things through carefully,” Chris Werkhoven assured us. “The formula of acting as one-stop shop for our clients is proving successful. We are far more than simply a temporary employment agency; we participate, are involved, and together with Hassink are able to supply not only personnel but also take on entire projects. We even have our own workshop located on the Waalhaven. Within our business, the offshore sector is divided into wind on the one hand and oil and gas on the other. We aim to establish long-term relationships; hence our joint investments, not only in recruitment and selection, but also in the training, certification and full equipment of the personnel. Our experience helps us find the most suitable candidates.” This is Leonie Stoppelenburg’s area of expertise; her goal is to put the right person in the right place. “In a recent urgent assignment for the offshore sector, within just one week, we supplied a tailor-made group of personnel
Maritime Industry
The management team at HCA Project Support: l. to r. Chris Werkhoven, Ted van de Berg and Arie Werkhoven.
Experience in the shipping industry is a massive advantage. As Chris Werkhoven explained, “Arie and I started right at the bottom of the ladder, literally, cleaning ship bottoms. In other words, we know all the ins and outs of the industry. The right mentality is particularly important.” Leonie added, “None of the people we second or send out on temporary employment has a nine-to-five mentality; they are all flexible, enthusiastic and involved in their work.” The same applies
to the board and managers. Chris Werkhoven concluded, “Everyone is part of the client’s working practice. We not only show our faces but actually check out activities on the ship floor. We like to establish longterm relationships with our customers, and we generally succeed; we are proud of our top ten standing in the subcontractor table.” Approximately 85 percent of the seconded staff are operational, with the remaining 15 percent made up of engineers, quality inspectors and managers. It is no real surprise that hands-on craftsmen represent the lion’s share. Now and in the future there is a clear shortage of craftspeople, hence the decision by HCA Project Support to invest in training, to ensure the availability of sufficient staff, not only with the right training but above all with the right mentality.

by providing training, medical testing and certification for the project in question. All are huge challenges, but overcoming them to the customer’s satisfaction leaves a real sense of achievement.”

EMHA OFFERS TOTAL PACKAGE OF MACHINE ALIGNMENT AND ON-SITE MACHINING FROM BRAND-NEW PREMISES Director Marco van ’t Geloof called in an architect to design a building that precisely tied in with our work approach. We now have a workshop in which steel and stainless steel are separated, with yet another separate area for all epoxy materials, and a department for all measuring equipment. There is now also more space for our office departments and the engineering department.” The attractive new building offers sufficient space for the 35 members of staff, and even provides for possible future expansion.
MACHINE ALIGNMENT, 3D MEASUREMENT AND SCANNING
Measurement is knowledge when it comes to machine alignment, one of the special services offered by EMHA.
EMHA are recognised as tried and trusted specialists in the field of Chockfast epoxy applications and techniques, machine alignment and precision installations. Although entirely true, this description fails to do justice to the business. In the Marine & Offshore division, alone, service provision goes much further. Project manager Raymond Scholtz concentrates on these aspects.
Leo van Teeffelen Before doing so, he first announced big news. In the second half of March 2015, the entire business is due to relocate from Ridderkerk to brand-new, purpose-built premises at Noordeinde 13 in Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht. As
Raymond Scholtz explained, “We had outgrown the location in Ridderkerk, and were split into different units. The opportunity to build new and larger premises in HendrikIdo-Ambacht came at just the right moment.
A remarkable feature at EMHA, established in 1964, is that the company’s specialisation in Chockfast epoxy applications and the alignment of machines and equipment has led to a whole variety of products and services. The Chockfast poured-in-place and repair epoxy resin from this company is used as a mounting for engines, gearboxes and generator sets, in ships. For the placement of installations, perfect alignment is essential to ensure a long service life, low energy consumption and reduced wear; all the elements of lower lifecycle costs. To achieve that level, EMHA has invested heavily in three-dimensional scanning and measurement. 3D scanning is used for new building, but is also an ideal tool for charting out damage, and in the case of EMHA, the ideal tool for reviewing the entire process, and elaborating the perfect solution.
MOBILE MACHINING While machining in the past was a question of visiting an engineering firm, EMHA has turned the tables, by offering mobile machining,
in other words On-Site and In-Situ. The lathe and grinding machine are delivered on location, even for the machining of crane pedestals used in the offshore industry. “That is our true strength,” explained Scholtz. “The combination of skills we can offer accelerates the process for the customer by offering one-stop shopping. We can provide the offshore sector a full range of machining services from facing to drill cutting and from casting through to MultiMetall (liquid steel).”
THE ENTIRE PROCESS The success formula for EMHA is the ability of the company to provide the entire process. In the case of vibrations, for example, the first step is measurement, followed by analysis. The next stage is engineering, to determine the necessary alterations. Then, using its own engineering staff, all in possession of the necessary offshore papers, EMHA sets to work putting the theory into practice. If the tools or special machines for a particular process are not already available, for example for facing an 18 metre-diameter crane pedestal, EMHA will produce them in-house, to bring the job to a successful conclusion.
MULTIFACETED Certified pipework, welding and construction work; adapting containers for use as offshore containers; the modification of exhaust gas systems; skid building; EMHA can do it all, 24/7. When disaster hits, EMHA will keep time losses to an absolute minimum. Whereas price, quality and service are commonplace, EMHA adds a fourth stream, namely trust, wherever in the world they may be needed. Now from fully-equipped, brand-new premises. Raymond Scholtz concluded, “Nonetheless, the most important element remains the enthusiasm, dedication and craftsmanship of the staff in assisting our customers. That is still unchanged.”

INNOVATION IN VIEW
4 QUESTIONS FOR … FLORIAN VAN DEN BROEK What are the latest developments and trends in the offshore sector? Who are the people behind them and what are there motivations? Groenervaren.nl, the platform for knowledge sharing about sustainability issues and innovation in the maritime sector aims to find out with four questions.
1) WHAT IS IHC’S RELATIONSHIP WITH THE OFFSHORE SECTOR? “IHC offers a wide range of solutions for the offshore market, from individual com-

ponents through to complete high-tech systems such as pipe and cable laying installations, diving systems and the ships on which they are integrated. We design, fabricate and integrate a variety of equipment that enables offshore operators in both the oil and gas market and in the wind market to successfully complete their projects. We are currently working on a so-called module handling system, for integration on board an existing vessel.”
2) WHAT IS THE THINKING BEHIND THE MODULE HANDLING SYSTEM? “The project is for a system for safely installing subsea equipment from a ship onto offshore oil and gas wells, thereby granting temporary access to the wells. This access is needed for optimising oil and gas production from the wells in question, a form of work known by the term well intervention.”
3) IS THE SYSTEM ALSO SUITABLE FOR OTHER APPLICATIONS? “Alongside well intervention work, the system is also suitable for installing or removing the so-called Christmas tree (the shutoff valve configuration on the top of an oil or gas well) and for undertaking construction work on the seabed. Because the system is linked to active oil and gas wells, it is governed by strict regulations and design criteria, one of the requirements of which is
that all the systems must be produced redundant, and that explosion-safe provisions must be included. A series of extensive FMECAs (Failure Mode, Effect and Criticality Analyses) has also been undertaken, in accordance with the requirements of DNV-GL.”
4) WHY IS THIS DEVELOPMENT NEEDED BY THE OFFSHORE SECTOR? “As the oil price falls, the sector has become more cautious with major investments. Putting a new well into production takes a great deal of time and money. Optimising the production from existing wells is a very current theme, as a consequence. Furthermore, our system is fully integrated, thereby delivering greater safety, better maintenance and userfriendly equipment operation. The entire system is operated from a cabin integrated in the tower itself, thereby granting the operator a clear view of the work. The fully duplicated controls are ultramodern, with touchscreens and control panels integrated in the seats.”
