Vorwort • Preface

Die Fassade ist das Aushängeschild eines Gebäudes, seine ­Architektur wird schnell darüber beurteilt. Aber was bedeutet ­»qualitätvolle Fassade«? Wodurch zeichnet sich eine solche aus? »Best of DETAIL Fassaden« liefert theoretische Fachbeiträge und einen ausführlichen Projektbeispielteil, der neben der Darstellung geeigneter Materialien und Konstruktionen Einblicke bis ins Detail gewährt. Dabei zeigt sich, dass gute Architektur erst durch eine stimmige Einheit aus Fassade, Tragwerk, innerer Organisation und Gebäudetechnik entstehen kann – Entwurfselemente, die in unmittelbarer Wechselwirkung zueinander stehen. Dies stellt Planer vor enorme Herausforderungen, insbesondere weil diese Einheit aus Außen und Innen keine Selbstverständlichkeit mehr darstellt, denn Materialvielfalt und konstruktive Möglichkeiten setzen heute kaum noch gestalterische Grenzen.

Die Publikation bündelt die Highlights aus DETAIL zu diesem Thema und liefert so eine Menge Inspiration und konstruktive Lösungsbeispiele für die eigene Praxis.

The facade serves as the building’s public face, allowing rapid assessment of its architecture. Yet, how does a building’s envelope really make a difference in the quality of its architecture? “Best of DETAIL Facades” explores this topic with theoretical discussions and an in-depth look at a range of selected projects, which, besides showcasing suitable materials and designs, give the reader a detailed look behind the scenes. It turns out that quality architecture can only result from a coherency between the facade, structure, internal organisation and building services – design elements that interact directly with each other. This presents the architect with enormous challenges, particularly as the unity between the exterior and interior is no longer a given, as today’s range of materials and design possibilities offer nearly limitless creativity.

The book gathers highlights on this issue from various DETAIL publications, offering abundant inspiration and constructive solutions for the reader’s own work.

Cukrowicz Nachbaur Architekten created an extraordinary facade for the addition and re­ novation of the vorarlberg museum in Bre­ genz: a multitude of irregularly arranged, relieflike protrusions adorn the even surface of the exposed concrete facade. Its vivid play of light and shadow provide it with a three-dimensional impression with enormous haptic pre­s­ ence. At the same time, the appearance is mysterious: from afar only uniformly distributed dots are visible. At a closer glance circular moulds with a floral structure become apparent that reveal themselves to be casts of various PET bottle bottoms. To be precise, the concrete flowers only cover one part of the museum – the new addition. It is oriented to-

wards the newly designed entry plaza directed at the historic city and replaces the old museum building. A major goal of the alteration was to integrate the bordering existing listed building from 1905 facing Lake Constance.

By adding two further storeys to the existing building, the two building parts placed back to back merge into a prismatic structure – emphasised by the uniform colour scheme with a light grey that almost appears white. By doing so, the addition to the existing building communicates adeptly between old and new: on the one hand, the even surface of the new exposed concrete facade construction is continued here – yet, without the floral pattern. On the other hand, its protrusions and recesses

adopt elements of the historic solid facade penetrated by windows.

Already during the competition phase in 2007 the design concept was to merge the prescribed architectural art with the building. The idea of the bottle bottom casts was developed in close collaboration with the Southern Tyrolean artist Manfred Alois Mayr. The source of inspiration were various finds from the museum collection: clay pots from the ­Roman era that had been produced in large quantities back then and find their contemporary equivalent today in typical everyday beverage bottles made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Along the three facades of the new addition, thirteen different PET bottle bottom

images produce a random pattern. The Swiss geometrical engineer Urs Beat Roth was consulted to develop their placement. Point of ­origin was the question which order the thousands of dots were supposed to follow in their distribution across the three facades.

The desire for a mix of order and randomness emerged: One the one hand, the goal was a random order without a coherent pattern. On the other hand, a constant number of flower petals was supposed to create a certain degree of regularity. Based on these preliminary considerations, as well as the 2 metre formwork grid as had been agreed on, and the already determined elevations of concrete pour sections, Urs Beat Roth developed the overall order for a formwork module. According to the Fibonacci sequence a 1 ≈ 1 square metre area was divided into two squares of different sizes and two rectangles of identical size (ill. G). In a second step, the arrangement of the concrete flowers along these four fields was determined. The architects selected one of the engineer’s five different suggestions – the order system “Domino 13”. It is comprised of three different elements: one small rect­ angle with two dots, one rectangle with three dots and one large square with five dots. This way, each 1 ≈ 1 m square contains 13 dots.

These elements permit random combination into an irregular structure that, however, dem­ onstrates a certain systematic order through its homogeneous distribution per square ­metre. As if this procedure wasn’t complex enough, the geometry engineer took care that the distribution of points resulted in the creation of repetitive figures such as an ellipse with a centre. Independently of this, the anchor bolt holes also had to be considered within the arrangement. This way altogether 16656 individual “flowers” were distributed along the three facades of the new construction.

Instead of building countless different positive moulds and producing formwork matrixes on their basis, all matrixes were developed by ­superimposition of one single large positive mould (ill. H). Eventually the sophisticated system led to limiting the amount of different formwork matrixes to three. Additional matrixes only became necessary for areas along

windows and borders. The manufacturing of formwork matrixes also comprised a special challenge. Typically, their prototype is milled from MDF panels by use of CNC machinery.

However, due to the size of protrusions this procedure wasn’t applicable. Instead, by filling PET bottles with polyurethane, positive casts were produced and attached to the MDF ­arrier board via wood dowel connections.

From the very beginning the architects had the concise vision that the facade should make a monolithic impression – as if created in a single pour – also to convincingly unite old and new. As a result, prefabricated parts that could have been produced easily, yet would have resulted in visible joints due to their assembly, were not an acceptable option for building the facade. A single layer version of exterior walls with insulation concrete was also discussed. However, it didn’t permit achieving the required energy performance figures. This is why a double layer facade construction with interior insulation was selected.

Here, the ­particular challenge was to create the exposed concrete wall with its flowers protruding up to 4.5 cm via vertical formwork.

As ­a result, venting air from the protrusions was significantly more difficult than in the case of a horizontal pour. In order to achieve a ­perfect result, different concrete mixes were tested. Eventually a self compacting concrete was employed that features very high levels of ­viscosity and a high degree of white pigment M in order to match the colour scheme of the overall complex.

Based on precisely developed formwork plans, the facade was poured step by step ­into formwork comprised of up to 6 m wide floor-height formwork panels placed in front of the insulation layer. Concrete was poured slowly – in order to prevent the creation of bubbles – into the high-pressure resistant and sealed-off formwork elements. Due to the size of the up to 6 m tall pour sections, they had to withstand an enormous interior pressure.

In order to realise an overall impression with a uniform colour scheme, work needed to be done carefully and precisely to the highest degree. Altogether four companies collaborated in the construction of the facade. As final N

steps, the regularly distanced anchor holes were retouched, the entire facade received hydrophobic treatment and was covered in a finishing glaze in order to provide colouration matching the existing building. Although the borders of individual formwork panels and a single ­expansion joint each along the eastern and western flanks can be identified upon closer inspection, the overall impression of the facade is a convincing one, due to the precise craftsmanship and the design concept. The fascinating haptic quality of the casts, precise to the millimetre, inspires visitors to approach the facade closely, and it serves to awaken visitors’ curiosity for the interior of the vorarlberg museum.

Zweischalige Fassaden mit Prallscheibe und Volumenstromregler Um den außen liegenden Sonnenschutz­ behang und die Lüftungsöffnung vor starkem Wind zu schützen, können sogenannte Prall­ scheiben vor den einschaligen Fassaden­ elementen angebracht werden. Die 92 m hohe ADAC-Hauptverwaltung wurde mit ­einer solchen doppelschaligen Fassade aus Aluminium und Glas in 22 verschiedenen Farbtönen verkleidet. Alle Element-Innen­ schalen sind jeweils mit zwei Drehfenstern, die nur zur Reinigung ­geöffnet werden, und einer öffenbaren wärmegedämmten Lüf­ tungsklappe ausgestattet (Abb. 5, 14, S. 35).

Die Außenschale bildet eine hinterlüftete Prallscheibe. Dazwischen be­finden sich Raffstores als Sonnen- und Blendschutz. ­Eine natürliche Lüftung über solche Fassa­ denklappen ist in Hochhäusern problema­ tisch, wenn die Bürogeschosse als durch­ gesteckte Großraumbüros ausgebildet sind.

Bei starkem Wind wirken sich die unter­ schiedlichen Druck- und ­Sogkräfte auf die gegenüberliegenden ­Fassaden im Innen­ raum als unkontrollierte Zugerscheinungen aus. Um diesen Effekt zu vermeiden, sind in die Öffnung der ­Lüftungsklappe eigens entwickelte Konstantvolumenstromregler ein­ gebaut. So werden die Räume mit Frischluft versorgt – trotz schwankendem Winddruck bei einem konstanten Luftwechsel – und der Energieverbrauch der Klimaanlage wird vermindert: Über vier Klappeneinheiten für Zuluft, Abluft, Frischluft und Fortluft strömt Abluft bei Fassadenunterdruck und Zuluft bei Fassadenüberdruck durch das Gerät.

Der Luftvolumenstrom wird dabei ohne Hilfs­ energie bei 120 m3/h (± 10 %) durch das Schließen der unteren Klappe begrenzt.

Der Regler arbeitet auch bei starkem Wind ­geräuscharm, mechanisch selbsttätig und ohne Fremdenergie. Bei geringen Druck­ unterschieden wird die Luft automatisch am Regler vorbei­geleitet.

Bei den 80 und 90 m hohen »Tanzenden ­Türmen« in Hamburg sorgt eine siebbe­ druckte schmale Prallscheibe vor der Lüf­ tungsöffnung für einen gewissen Wind- und Regenschutz. Der »ungeschützte« Sonnen­ schutz aus Aluminiumlamellen ist besonders windstabil ausgebildet und wird an den Randbereichen von überstehenden »Passe­ partoutrahmen« der Aluminiumfassade über­ deckt, sodass er bis Windstärke 8 ausgefah­ ren bleiben kann (Abb. 6). Die Türme neigen sich zueinander und knicken in unterschied­ lichen Höhen ab. So entsteht eine Neigung der ­Primärfassade von bis zu ca. 7 Grad – ab 10 Grad wäre eine Überkopfverglasung nötig. Bei der Fassadenkonstruktion muss­ ten 16 verschiedene Neigungssituationen berücksichtigt werden. Der Drehflügel der Lüftungsklappe wird manuell bedient und kann über die speziell für geneigte Flügel entwickelte Beschlagstechnik in verschiede­ nen Öffnungspositionen arretiert werden.

Wettstetten, etwa zehn Kilometer nördlich von Ingolstadt gelegen, ist ­eine typische Vorortgemeinde, die sich vom Dorf zur prosperierenden Wohnsiedlung entwickelt hat. Durch das rasche Wachstum wurde das Rathaus im Laufe der Jahre zu klein und sollte durch e ­ inen Neubau ­ersetzt werden. Nicht nur neue Verwaltungsräume sollten entstehen, sondern auch ein Bürgersaal, ein Sitzungssaal für den Gemeinderat, ein repräsentativer Trausaal sowie Räumlichkeiten für die Tagespfle­ ge von Demenzkranken und eine Kinderkrippe. Mit dieser Nutzungs­ mischung, so die Hoffnung, würde auch neues Leben in die Ortsmitte einkehren. Aufgeteilt in drei gleichwertige Baukörper, die sich im Maß­ stab an der Nachbarbebauung orientieren und vorhandene Gebäude­ fluchten aufnehmen, fügt sich der Neubau behutsam in die kleintei­ lige Struktur des Dorfkerns ein. Der gewachsene Ortsgrundriss wird wie selbst­ver­­ständ­lich weitergeschrieben – mit neuen stadträumlichen Qualitäten. Auch gestalterisch nehmen die Architekten re­gionale ­Bezüge auf: Die Baukörper orientieren sich an den typischen histori­ schen Jurakalkstein-Häusern der Altmühlregion mit flach geneigten Sattel­dächern, hohem Kniestock und wenig Dachüberstand. Ebenso leitet sich die Materialität der Fassaden – geschlämmtes Ziegelmauer­ werk – aus der traditionellen Bauweise ab. So ist es den Architekten gelungen, ein Bauwerk mit lokaler Verwurzelung und gleichzeitig mo­ derner ­Architektursprache zu schaffen – ein zurückhaltendes Ensem­ ble und dennoch ein starker Akzent für die Ortsmitte von Wettstetten.

DETAIL 09/2014 Situated roughly ten kilometres north of Ingolstadt, Wettstetten has ­developed over the years from a village into a prosperous residential ­area. In the course of time, however, the civic hall had become too small, so that plans were made to replace it with a structure providing not only new administrative facilities, but also a community hall, an assembly hall for the local council, an appropriate space for weddings, a crèche and a day-care centre for people suffering from dementia. This mixture of uses, it was hoped, would also infuse new life into the municipality. Divided into three volumes of equal standing that are related in scale to the neighbouring developments and adopt existing building lines, the new construction is circumspectly integrated into the smallscale structure at the heart of the old village, at the same time extrapolating it to create new urban qualities. In design terms, too, the architects have adopted local points of reference. For example, the construction is oriented to the historical Jura-limestone buildings of the region; the same applies to the materials used for the facades. In this way, the architects have created structures that have local roots as well as a modern design language – a restrained ensemble that nevertheless sets a strong accent at the heart of Wettstetten.

Wettstetten war bis zur Mitte des 20. Jahr­ hunderts ein Dorf mit etwas mehr als 800 Einwohnern und überwiegend landwirt­ schaftlicher Prägung. Das hat sich in den letzten 60 Jahren grundlegend geändert.

Vor allem die Nähe zu dem stetig expan­ dierenden Automobilwerk von Audi macht die Gemeinde zu einem nachgefragten Wohnort mit heute rund 5000 Einwohnern.

Naturgemäß fand das Wachstum überwie­ gend an den Rändern statt, im Ortskern ­dagegen sind die dörflichen Strukturen ­erhalten geblieben.

Mit der ungebrochenen Bevölkerungszu­ nahme ist ein permanenter Anpassungs­ prozess der Infrastruktur verbunden, der schließlich auch die Verwaltung betraf.

Das einst zum Rathaus umfunktionierte alte Schulhaus von 1907 konnte die zunehmen­ den Anforderungen nicht mehr erfüllen.

Die Räumlichkeiten wurden zu klein und es fehlte ein geeigneter Sitzungssaal für den Gemeinderat. Aufgrund des schlechten Bauzustands und der geringen Raumhöhen kam nur ein Neubau in Frage.

Frühzeitig fasste der Gemeinderat den Grundsatzbeschluss, das Rathaus im Dorf am bisherigen Standort in der Ortsmitte ­neben der Kirche zu belassen. Denn wie ­all­gemein bei solch stark wachsenden Vor­ ortgemeinden besteht die Gefahr, dass sich das Leben zunehmend an den Rändern in den Neubaugebieten abspielt und das ­Zentrum verödet. Dem wollten wir bewusst entgegenwirken. Glücklicherweise konnten nach und nach mehrere benachbarte Grund­ stücke erworben werden – sonst wäre der Mehrbedarf an Fläche kaum zu realisieren gewesen. Dort standen vorher einige, für Wettstetten typische, kleine landwirtschaft­ liche Anwesen sowie ein kleiner Handwerks­ betrieb, die alle längst aufgegeben waren und leer standen.

Welche Funktion und Nutzung die Ortsmitte genau erfüllen sollte, erörterte der Gemein­ derat in einer Klausurtagung, unterstützt durch das Architekturbüro Eberhard von An­ gerer, das auch den Architekturwettbewerb durchführte. Im Ergebnis wurde das Raum­ programm beschlossen: Neben den Räum­

lichkeiten für die Gemeindeverwaltung samt Sitzungssaal sollte es als Ergänzung zu der bestehenden Mehrzweckhalle einen kleine­ ren Bürgersaal für kulturelle Veranstaltun­ gen, Vereinsfeste und Ähnliches geben. ­Darüber hinaus bestand Raumbedarf für die ambulante Betreuung demenzkranker alter Personen und für eine Kinderkrippe, sodass eine Betreuungseinrichtung für Jung und Alt unter einem Dach anvisiert wurde – aus meiner Sicht eine Kombination, die wunder­ bar zusammenpasst. Als weitere Grundsät­ ze wurden die städtebauliche Einbindung sowie ein Bezug auf die hier einst beheima­ tete Jura-Bauweise festgelegt.

Damit standen die Vorgaben für den Archi­ tekturwettbewerb fest, zu dem acht Büros aus der Region eingeladen wurden und zwölf weitere in einem offenen Bewerbungs­ verfahren ausgewählt wurden. Mit seinem kleinteiligen Entwurf aus drei gleichwertigen Baukörpern hat das Architekturbüro Bembé Dellinger den Vorstellungen der Gemeinde am meisten entsprochen und wurde klar ­favorisiert. Im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen Teilnehmern haben sich die Architekten ­erkennbar intensiv mit der Topografie und dem Zuschnitt der Grundstücksfläche aus­ ein­andergesetzt wie auch mit der traditio­ nellen Bauweise vor Ort. Entstanden ist ein Gebäudeensemble, das sich feinfühlig in die bestehende Bebauung einfügt. Gleich­ zeitig betont die klare Formen- und Material­ sprache den eigenständigen Charakter.

Unter den Einwohnern wurde das neue ­Rathausensemble vor allem während der Bauphase kontrovers diskutiert. Das liegt zum Teil vermutlich an dem betont minima­ listisch gestalteten Erscheinungsbild der Gebäude, das für viele Bürger zunächst ­ungewohnt war. Besonders das Verschläm­ men der ­Fassade traf zunächst auf Unver­ ständnis, da das Sichtmauerwerk auch ohne Überzug ganz ansehnlich aussah. Spätes­ tens mit der Fertigstellung haben sich die Wogen jedoch wieder geglättet. Ich habe den Eindruck, dass viele Vorbehalte ausge­ räumt werden konnten und dass die Mehr­ heit der Bewohner mit der neuen Ortsmitte sehr zufrieden ist.

Down to the middle of the 20th century, Wettstetten was a village mainly of agricultural character with just over 800 inhabitants. In the past 60 years, that has changed radically. In particular, its proximity to the steadily expanding Audi automobile plant has meant that this municipality is much in demand as a place of residence, and today it has a population of 5,000. Growth inevitably took place on the outskirts, while the village-like structure at the centre remained unchanged. This expansion has led to a constant process of adjustment, however, which has also affected the administration. The town hall – a former school building dating from 1907 – was no longer able to meet the demands placed in it. Its spaces were too small, and there was no ­assembly hall for the local council. In view of the poor condition of the building and the low room heights, the only feasible solution was to create a new structure.

At an early stage, the council decided to locate the town hall in the same position in the village next to the church in order to avoid the danger of urban decay at the centre. Fortunately, it proved possible to acquire a number of neighbouring sites in the course of time, otherwise it would scarcely have been possible to meet the need for additional land. On these sites there had been various small agricultural properties typical of Wettstetten and a craft business, all of which stood empty.

The precise function of the urban centre was discussed by the council together with the Eberhard von Angerer architectural practice, which was also responsible for organising the design competition. The spatial programme was determined at this conference. In addition to the rooms for the council, which included an assembly hall, the existing multipurpose hall was to be complemented by a small civic hall for cultural events and the use of local societies. In addition, space was required for the care of outpatients suffering from dementia as well as for a crèche – in other words, care facilities for young and old beneath a single roof – a wonderful combination to my mind. Further principles that were determined were the integration of the development into the urban context and the adoption of local Jura forms

of construction, which were formerly to be found here. With this, the conditions for the architectural competition were laid down.

Eight offices from the region were invited to participate and a further twelve were selected through a process of open application. With their small-scale design, consisting of three volumes of equal standing, the architects Bembé Dellinger submitted the most convincing solution. In contrast to many other participants, the architects had clearly made a close study of the topography and the shape of the site, as well as taking account of traditional local forms of construction. They have created a group of buildings that is sensitively integrated into the existing urban structure. In ad-

dition, the clear forms that were used and the language spoken by the materials accentuate the individual character of the development.

The new town hall ensemble was the subject of controversial discussions among inhabitants, particularly during the construction phase. Probably that was due in part to the minimalist appearance of the buildings. In particular, the slurry finish to the facade met with a lack of understanding; after all, the exposed brick walling was not unattractive in itself. After the construction work was finished, however, things calmed down. Many reservations were overcome, and I think the majority of local people are extremely happy with the new urban centre.

Unter den Baumkronen eines neu gestalteten Parks in der luxemburgischen Gemeinde Kayl-Tétange schimmert ein rötlich-brauner Kubus: Der »Pavillon Madeleine« beherbergt ein Restaurant in idyllischer Lage. Eine teils opake, teils perforierte Hülle aus voroxidiertem Stahl umgibt den 10 ≈ 22 m großen Baukörper. Ist das Restaurant ge­öffnet, werden die geschlitzten Fassadenplatten aufgeklappt, um Ein- und Ausblicke durch gebäudehohe Verglasungen zu bieten. Das so entstehende Schattenspiel belebt die einfache Gebäudeform ebenso wie die reizvoll unregelmäßige Patina des Stahls. Die 4 mm starken Tafeln, die nicht sichtbar auf der Rückseite befestigt sind, verkleiden das

Tragwerk des Pavillons aus 4,60 m hohen Stützen und 10 m langen Trägern aus Normprofilen. Alle Stahlbauteile sind vorgefertigt und vor Ort verschraubt. Um im Inneren ­einen ruhigen, großzügigen Raumeindruck zu schaffen, sind Tragwerk und Haustechnik hinter der abgehängten Decke oder der Wandverkleidung verborgen. Das Zentrum des Restaurants bildet die offene Küche, in der die Gäste die Zubereitung der Speisen miterleben können. Ein Tresen aus Schwarzstahl umgibt den Küchenblock. Auch der ­offene Kamin und der Weinschrank sind mit diesem Material verkleidet. Charakteristisch für den unbehandelten Stahl sind die Muster und Schlieren – Produktionsspuren, die

beim Warmwalzen entstehen. Eine dünne Schicht aus Bienenwachs schützt die markante Oberflächenzeichnung vor Oxidation.

Die beiden unterschiedlichen Stahlarten prägen das Gebäude und nehmen Bezug auf die Geschichte der Region, in der bis in die 1970er-Jahre Eisenerz abgebaut und in nahen Stahlwerken verhüttet wurde. Als robustes und witterungsbeständiges Mate­ rial prägt der voroxidierte Stahl auch die weiteren baulichen Elemente im Park – sorgfältig gestaltete Sitzbänke, Brüstungen, Leuchten – und wird so zum gestalterischen Leitmotiv der Gesamtanlage, die Einwohner und ­Besucher gleichermaßen anzieht.

Beneath the treetops of a newly completed park in the Luxembourgian town of Kayl-Tétange is a reddish-brown shimmering structure: the “Pavillon Madeleine” occupies a quiet, idyllic site. A partly opaque, partly perforated skin of pre-oxidised steel sheathes the building massing. The pavilion’s footprint measures 10 ≈ 22 metres.

When the restaurant is open, the incised steel plates are slid into parked position and offer views in and out through panes of glass extending the height of the building. The play of shadows animates the building’s simple form, as does the steel’s irregular patina. The 4 mm thick sheets clad the pavilion’s structural members (4.60 metre high columns and 10 metre

beams made of standard sections); the connection of the steel sheets to the frame is concealed. All steel components were prefabricated and connected with bolts on site. To attain a serene, spacious atmosphere inside the pavilion, the architects situated the structural members and the building services behind the suspended ceiling and wall cladding.

The restaurant’s open kitchen is the heart of the establishment; this layout gives guests the opportunity to experience how the different dishes are prepared. A counter made of untreated steel surrounds the cooking island.

The open fireplace and the wine cabinet are also clad in this material. The patterns and streaks that characterise untreated steel are

remnants of the manufacturing process: they come about during hot-rolling. A thin layer of beeswax protects the striking surface tracery from oxidation.

These two types of steel are what distinguish the building. They also make reference to the region’s history: until the 1970s, iron ore was mined here and then smelted in the nearby steelworks. Because it is a robust, weatherresistant material, pre-oxidised steel was ­selected for further interventions in the park – the painstakingly designed benches, parapets, and luminaires – and becomes the conceptual common thread running through the entire park and attracting locals and ­visitors to an equal degree.

Recently completed, the centre for contemporary art in Córdoba has not yet been taken into occupation. It is situated opposite the historic city centre on a bend in the Guadalquivir River. The development seeks to be more than just a museum: it serves as a meeting place as well as providing space for exhibitions, workshops, research and debates about modern – and above all – digital art.

Instead of planning a multifunctional, neutral volume with an indeterminate appearance, the architects deliberately designed a building that is characterised by its bold and highly individual formal language. This, in turn, is closely linked to the history and traditions of the location. The starting point for the planning was a repetitive, geometric module based on a hexagonal form, a motif that plays an important role in the artistic and architectural history of Córdoba. It can be found, for example, in the Mezquita, the former medieval mosque that is now the cathedral of the city. The idea also bears a certain relationship to Arabic literary 5 structures in which one story is woven into another. Here, modules in three different sizes are playfully strung together and interlocked.

The hexagons, 150, 90 and 60 m2 in area – together with courtyards of the same form – can be combined in ever new arrangements, allowing the creation of sequences of exhibition zones with different dimensions and various spatial qualities. The largest of the hexagons – the so-called “black box” – was con-

ceived as an auditorium and multipurpose space that can be used for audio-visual exhibitions, for film showings, theatrical perfor­ mwances and conferences.

The two entrances, at the northern and southern ends of the development, are of equal weight. Each leads to a foyer, from where there is access to the museum shop in one case and to a café in the other. The labyrinthine14heart of the building is flanked by two clearly articulated rectilinear tracts. The twostorey western strip contains offices, workshops 15 and studios. The eastern tract houses the media library and an elongated gallery space for exhibitions.

Internally, the structure is distinguished by its raw, exposed concrete surfaces and the massive, funnel-shaped roof lights. These features reinforce the factory-like character of this centre for art and at the same time create a striking contrast to the white facades clad with glass-fibre-reinforced concrete panels.

A further significant element of the outer 12skin is the media facade, which is oriented away from the city centre and set parallel to the ­river. Here, the hexagonal motif recurs in the form of the many perforations with LED light fittings incorporated round the edges.

Computer-controlled signals create changing images and textual messages, so that at night, the eastern facade is transformed into a lighting installation, the forms of which are reflected in the river.

Mit der Fassadengestaltung des Paul Smith Store in der Albemarle Street in London ­gelang es den Architekten, den Bogen ­zwischen dem Gewebe der ausgefallenen Modestücke des Designers und Londons ­industrieller Vergangenheit zu spannen. Die gusseiserne Hülle verweist auf das 18. Jahr­ hundert, als das Gebäude entstand. Damals schuf das Material in Großbritannien neue Industriezweige und ist bis heute in Form von Brücken, Laternen und Balkongittern in den Straßen präsent.

Die plastisch hervortretenden Kreismuster der Fassade, die sich überschneiden und so zu einer komplexen Struktur fügen, spie­ len augenzwinkernd mit der Ornamentik der Zeit und erinnern in ihrer modernen Interpre­ tation an die feinen Textilgewebe, für die der britische Designer bekannt ist. Bei genaue­ rer Betrachtung findet der aufmerksame Passant dessen Handschrift in Gusseisen verewigt wieder: Skizzen von Katze, Vogel und Schuh verbergen sich unauffällig im ­eisernen Liniengewirr.

Halbkreisförmige gläserne Vitrinen dienen als Schaufenster und lassen teilweise Einbli­ cke in den Showroom der Ladenerweiterung zu. Die geschwungene Form entlehnten die Architekten den historischen Eingangsfron­ ten in der Nachbarschaft. Hierfür wurde das Glas in Spanien mit sehr geringen Toleran­ zen gebogen und in England mit Edelstahl­ profilen verklebt und auf die verzinkte Stahl­ konstruktion montiert.

Die gusseisernen Paneele gehen aus einer Kombination moderner und traditioneller Her­ stellungsmethoden hervor: Die Geometrie ent­stand am Computer und die Polyurethan­ formteile an der CNC-Fräse, während der Sphäroguss in daraus hergestellten her­ kömm­lichen Sandgussformen seine endgül­ tige Form mit Relief und integrierten Haken erhielt. Danach oxidierten die Platten einige Zeit, bevor ein Rostumwandler auf Tanninba­ sis den Prozess stoppte und ihnen ihre dunk­ le Farbe verlieh. Kaum als Materi­al­wech­sel wahrnehmbar, tritt die Fluchttür aus schwarz geölter Eiche in Erscheinung, deren Ober­ fläche mit dem invertierten Relief der Guss­ DETAIL 07– 08/2014 eisenplatten spielt.

With the facade design for the Paul Smith Store on Albemarle Street in London, 6a ­Architects has set up a relationship between the fabric used in the designer’s offbeat items of clothing and London’s industrial past. The cast iron skin harks back to the eighteenth century, the period in which the building was erected; the material led to new branches of industry in Great Britain back then and has remained ubiquitous on the streets until the present day in the form of bridges, lanterns and balcony grilles.

The raised pattern of circles on the facade, which overlap and thereby yield a complex structure, are evidence of a playful engagement with the ornamentation of the era and brings to mind in its modern interpretation the fine fabrics upon which the British designer’s renown is based. On closer inspection the attentive passerby will recognise his “signature” immortalised in cast iron: sketches of a cat, bird and shoe are hidden unobtrusively in the thicket of lines.

Semi-circular glass vitrines serve as display windows and provide partial glimpses into the showroom of the extension to the shop.

The architects borrowed the curves from the historic storefronts located in the vicinity. To produce them, glass was bent to shape, with minimal margin for error, in Spain and transported to England, where it was glued to the stainless-steel profiles before being mounted on the galvanised steel construction.

The cast-iron panels were developed using a combination of modern and traditional manufacturing methods: the geometry came about with the assistance of a computer program, and the polyurethane moulds were produced on a CNC mill, while the ductile cast iron received its final form – with raised pattern and integrated hooks – through the use of the conventional (CNC-milled) sand moulds. Then the panels were given time to oxidise before a tannin-based rust converter was employed to stop the process and give the cast iron its dark tone.

The change in material from cast iron panel to oiled oak escape door – whose surface is an inverted play on the bas relief of the cast iron panels – is barely perceptible.
