World-unique nature

“Our aim is for our visitors to feel the genuineness, thoughtfulness, pride and sense of community that we feel”.

With the world’s highest coastline, visitors to the High Coast are surrounded by the unique evidence of the record-breaking land uplift after the ice age. This is where you can find both Sweden’s highest island, Mjältön, and the Baltic Sea’s deepest trench, Ulvödjupet.

World-unique nature The High Coast is a combination of open sea, towering mountains and deep forests. It is home to the steepest and most dramatic coastline on the Baltic Sea. Nature is the destination’s greatest asset and a source of wellbeing for both local residents and visitors. In the wilderness of Skuleskogen National Park, sights worth exploring include the sweeping views seen from the peak of Slåttdalsberget, the evidence of the land uplift all around you, and the views from Skuleberget of the world’s highest coastline.

...social encounters and companionship A lot of people come to the High Coast to meet others who have the same basic values and interests as they do. For the active outdoor enthusiast, the High Coast’s variation and openness will provide plenty of great new memories and the chance to talk about old ones around the campfire. That campfire feeling is found in all meetings regardless of if they take place when hiking, boating or at a conference. We want companionship, it’s that simple.

... and Sweden’s absolute best outdoor life Nature has laid the foundations for a broad outdoor life on the High Coast. Outdoor life here includes an enormous selection of activities, adventures and events, and this is what makes the High Coast the well-recognised and awardwinning destination it is today. As one of Sweden’s fastest growing tourist destinations, the number of guest nights is increasing every year. In the summer of 2019, the High Coast counted over 340,000 commercial guest nights.

The High Coast is home to endless opportunities to either be active in the outdoors or just relax and enjoy the magnificent surroundings. Try hiking, kayaking, fishing and other activities! Try dog sledding, paddling, rafting, horse riding, snowshoeing, skiing, or go on a beaver, predator or seal safari. You can do everything and nothing at the same time here.

Welcome to the High Coast World Heritage Site! In just a short time our destination has become one of Sweden’s fastest growing tourist destinations. It feels great! Our hearts beat a little faster here in the High Coast and our aim is for our visitors to also feel what we who live here feel: genuineness, thoughtfulness, pride and friendliness. Thousands of years of land uplift have led to a dramatic landscape that gives endless opportunities for activities and outings. Experiencing the High Coast on foot is fantastic! We have a wide range of hiking trails and viewpoints with panoramas that you will never forget. Few places in Sweden have such varied terrain as the High Coast, and this makes for a great outdoor life. Great fishing can be had in our large number of lakes, streams and rivers and along our coastline. But the High Coast is just as good for those who want to take it easy and just “be”. There are a lot of us working all year round to make the High Coast accessible to everyone. Developing good-quality services is an ongoing job. One example of this is our investment in joint tourism services. Thanks to this, we can now reach you using more channels. With our 40 manned tourist service sites, so-called InfoPoints, and 20 additional service points, we can now reach more visitors by being where they are. Don’t hesitate to contact us to help you create travel opportunities and profitable trade. We are constantly working on taking the High Coast to the next level.

A heritage to care for. As humans, we like to leave traces. In the High Coast we have plenty of them, thousands of years old, to visit and explore. We are proud of our world heritage and are therefore wary of the new tracks we leave behind us. We mind The Right of Public Access and work for a sustainable tourism industry that makes it possible to experience our nature in the long perspective. From taking care of, and keeping our wind shelters and attractions clean, to creating regional projects for climate and nature conservation. We welcome you to discover it.

The High Coast is home to Sweden’s most beautiful island t r y s u n da , ö r n s kö l d s v i k

Trysunda is Sweden’s most beautiful island, according to island-lover Anders Källgård who wrote the book “Sveriges öar” (The Islands of Sweden). The island has many lovely bays and a beautifully preserved old fishing village and offers relaxing sandy beaches, beautiful hiking trails and scenic viewpoints. This is where summer mornings are best spent.

Nature Architecture Nature and architecture meet everywhere, which is the foundation for Arknat, the Scandinavian Architecture Festival where architecture students from all over Scandinavia are invited to seminars, workshops and to design and construct wind shelters in the High Coast. A generous donation that became a fantastic art treasure – the High Coast Art Valley is a valley with both interesting art and spectacular nature – not to mention plenty of outdoor experiences. The heart of it all is the art and nature park Herrgårdsparken in Köpmanholmen.

Nämforsen waterfall, by the

Ångermanälven River in Näsåker, is one of the largest single rock carving sites in northern Europe. There are about 2 600 carvings preserved here, and the oldest are thought to be 6 000 years old. A museum has been built close by with fascinating exhibitions, including a children’s museum where youngsters can experience how life once was in the High Coast region.

Great for conferences, company parties, dining well and enjoying the surroundings. In the summer months, Lotsstugan also offers Bed & Breakfast accommodation. The building is from 1863 and has functioned as a pilot house for ships entering Härnösand’s harbour or the Ångermanälven River. Since 1991, it has been used as a conference centre. Its position is unique and gives our guests a quality to their visit not found elsewhere. We want you to taste and feel the High Coast in everything we offer you. For example, all the dishes in our restaurant are made from predominantly locally produced, organic ingredients. We also organise activities for guests in cooperation with local companies.

WORLD CLASS GIN Hernö Gin is a dream come true. An organic, handmade gin made with passion, created with the High Coast’s nature as inspiration. A world-class gin that has been crowned as the world’s best gin several times since it was founded in 2012. Hernö Gin’s story started when young Jon Hillgren worked as a bartender in London. His passion for gin was born and he started travelling the world looking for information and inspiration. One day he found the perfect place for his dream to come true in: an farm in Dala from the 1800s that he bought together with his wife. This is where Jon founded Sweden’s first pure gin distillery and Hernö Gin took off. Since 2013, Hernö Gin has been Europe’s leading award-winning gin distillery with its 83 trophies, masters and gold medals from the world’s largest and most prestigious competitions. Crowned as the World’s Best Gin 2017 and 2018, World’s best London Dry Gin 2017, World’s Best Gin and Tonic 2016, San Francisco World Spirits Competition Double Gold 2017, Gin Producer of the Year 2016, 2017 and 2018 and Best Gin in Asia 2018.

A TASTE OF ÅDALEN AND THE HIGH COAST There are a lot of distilleries that make great whisky, but some make greater whisky than others. As always, there is no right or wrong when it comes to taste, but quality, precision and local conditions separate distilleries from each other. There is a lot that makes the High Coast Distillery unique. Beautifully located in an old power station by the huge Ångermanälven River, all that is needed to create whisky of high quality can be found here. The climate, the location, the raw ingredients … there are many details that explain the success of High Coast Whisky. Here you can find everything from show cars with loads of chrome and luxury details to our most common family cars – cars you’ve forgotten you remember! At Härnösand’s Car Museum you can experience a wonderful journey through time from 1899 to 1990. Several exhibition halls have a wide range of unique vehicles to discover. And cars – cars are everywhere – about 200 of them in total. It is possible to simultaneously be in awe of cars you could only dream about owning while nodding in recognition at well-maintained examples of standard cars you have probably driven and owned in the past. You’ll find a Rolls Royce next to a tiny GM family car. A T-Ford next to a Trabant. Classic American cars from the 1950s under the same roof as a VW beetle. EXPERIENCE THE HIGH COAST’S INLAND AND ITS FRIENDLY LOCALS Welcome to the High Coast’s inland – where the rivers meet and their steep banks create unique scenery. You’ll find 6000 year old rock carvings, a landscape just asking for you to get outdoors and experience it, and proud locals who love taking guests on adventures. What is the best thing about living in the High Coast Inland? Is it paddling on the river? Is it dogsledding in the winter? Is it eating fresh fish, game and mushrooms sourced directly from the lakes and forest? Or is it the feeling of community? We think: all of the above. And this is exactly what we offer our guests: come and visit us and experience life in the High Coast Inland for yourself. We offer experiences all year round; week-long packages or half-day tours, whatever suits you. SUMMER: Kayaking, beaver safari, guided hikes (edible plants!), eat dinner with a local, archaeo logical expeditions, flat bread baking, and more. WINTER: Bird hunting in the snow, animal tracking, photography safari, ice fishing, dog sledding, snow shoeing, tobogganing, cross-country skiing. We will create a package that suits you, and we promise campfires, good local food and personal contact with locals who want to show you the best parts of living here.

MAGIC IN THE ARCHIPELAGO – BY WATER Come on a trip to Sweden’s highest island, the majestic Mjältön. Hike up to its peak and have a picnic 236 metres above sea level or come on a boat trip around the island. We’ll tell you stories about our World Heritage Site and the land uplift that has occurred here and give you a great experience in the High Coast archipelago – with family, friends or colleagues. The beautiful island of Ulvön with all its quaint fishing huts and delicious eateries is a must! We’ll take you there and pick you up whenever you like, it takes about 40 minutes from our departure point in Sund. Trysunda is, according to many, Sweden’s most beautiful island. It takes about an hour to get there, travelling through the High Coast’s amazing archipelago. Spoil yourself with a seal or bird safari and study the grey seals, razorbills and uria birds on the small rocky island Gnäggen south of Ulvön and Flasan, on the far side of southern Ulvön. They are as curious about us as we are about them. We can tell you about what species we are looking at. Don’t forget your camera and a warm jacket. You can borrow binoculars from us on board. Or why not take a trip in connection with a concert or outdoor adventure at Skuleberget! We can pick you up from Skuleberget Campsite at the foot of Skuleberget.

Our log house was built from trees that grew here, our own ideas and our own labour. There are several elements that inspire – the food, the interior décor, the art, and the eggs that are the world’s largest! Ostriches have been around since the dinosaurs and they are impressive.
