THIS PAST SPRING, NEW MEXICO FASHIONISTAS SWELLED WITH PRIDE to see Santa Fe local designer Hester Sunshine on Season 17 of Bravo TV’s hit show, Project Runway. Ever deserving of her last name, Hester’s designs are a ray of sunshine, embracing color, patterns and whimsy. After working in New York for Betsey Johnson, Coach and Kate Spade, as well as designing private labels for Hot Topic, Spencer’s Gifts, Nordstrom’s and Walmart, she has launched Sunshine by Hester, a handmade line offering fantastical seasonal accessories for everyone. “I have been into fashion and design my whole life,” Hester shares. “I started making clothes for my toys when I was five or six, and I got my first sewing machine when I was in the seventh grade. I’m one of those weird people who have always known exactly what I wanted to do, and never really wavered in any way. I’ve always been in love with fashion as an art form and a form of self-representation.”

Episode 1703 Photo by Bravo Media Barbara Nitke

Hester has a long personal history in Santa Fe. She was born in Manhattan, but her family moved to Santa Fe when she was in the seventh grade. She returned to New York for college and moved back out to the City Different two and a half years ago with her wife to be closer to her parents. Now that she’s back, she cites New Mexico as a significant source of inspiration: “There’s so much visual inspiration here, from the outdoors to the architecture and cultural history. I particularly love the weird architectural mashup. Las Vegas is one of my favorite places to visit in that regard because of the Victorianstyle buildings mixed with adobe. There’s something really special and different about northern New Mexico that forces a creativity unlike anything else.” Hester describes her aesthetic as being over-the-top and kitsch high fashion. “It’s very whimsical; I like to say there’s a whole lot of extra,” she describes. “My designs are also very young minded. To me, this has nothing to do with age. Being young minded is about a mentality and is not exclusionary to young people. It’s about being young at heart.” After being selected for Season 17 of Project Runway, Hester’s status and renown has been greatly elevated. “For me, Project Runway was a chance to mature my design aesthetic in a constructive way,” she reflects. “I got feedback and pushed myself in directions I wouldn’t necessarily have done on my own. It was what I hoped to get out of Project Runway, and what I did.”

Episode 1706 Photo by Bravo Media Karolina Wojtasik

Hester is looking forward to building the recognition of designers locally in the wake of her publicity. She just released a mini collection showcasing a couple of the pieces she wore on the show. Her designs are available for perusal and pre-order on her website, SunshineByHester.com. “I love self-expression through fashion,” Hester summarizes. “For me, clothing is meant to bring joy. Fashion has been this ‘cool kid’ for too long that hasn’t allowed for fun or whimsy. I’m excited to bring back a little whimsy and silliness to the fashion world.”

What’s in A Good Hat? THE DAYS WHEN MEN AND WOMEN REGULARLY ADORNED THEIR HEADS in custom-made hats have passed, but there’s still the undeniable fashion statement of a beautiful piece of headwear. Whether it’s for keeping your ears warm in the winter or shading your face in the summer, the hat is both an article of utility and personal expression. What’s in a good hat? To start with, there’s the material. Traditionally, felt is for cool weather and straw is for warm weather. The brisa weave of the Panama hat, for example, translates as “breeze,” and is woven by mounting one straw on top of another. As you might expect by its name, it is ideal for keeping your head cool. In contrast, the Cuenca weave, another Panama hat variant, is woven by one straw mounting two straws. In this case, the finer the weave and the straw, the less breathable the hat. Other hats, like felted cowboy hats, firmly trap the heat of the head, keeping the wearer’s dome a little toastier. There’s also the question of head size. Similar to shoe size, the circumference of the head as well as the shape thereof varies greatly from person to person. There’s no one-size-fits-all. A felted hat or a Panama hat can be custom fitted to the wearer’s head, but other hat materials are less malleable. Generally, a good hat should fit about a finger’s width above the ears, and a custom fit goes a long way toward personalized comfort. When deciding on a hat, why not seek out the advice of an expert? “We pride ourselves in customer service,” says President Milton Johnson of Montecristi Custom Hat Works in Santa Fe, who has been in the hat business for decades. “We start by talking with our customers and discovering what exactly it is they want. A custom fit is about finding the perfect hat for you.”

Legendary THE

PANAMA HAT

PANAMA HATS HAVE A CERTAIN TIMELESS APPEAL. These traditional brimmed straw hats from Ecuador are always in style, and the craftsmanship of a quality handmade Panama hat is unparalleled. However, high-end Panama hats can be rare and hard to find. Luckily, Santa Fe’s Montecristi Custom Hat Works boasts among the finest collection of Panama hats to be found. President Milton Johnson has been in the business for 43 years and takes pride in working closely with 15-20 incredibly skilled second-generation artisans in Montecristi, Ecuador.

national and international press we received starting in the early 80s stimulated a previously dormant desire for this breathtaking product. It has allowed Montecristi the opportunity to build our inimitable skills in finishing and custom fitting this legendary piece of Ecuadorian history.” With such a fabulous resource for Panama hats in your backyard, what are you waiting for?

In fact, Montecristi Custom Hat Works has been a lifeline for the Panama hat. “Our quest for simply the finest hats and our willingness to pay top prices for the best has fueled production in the village of Montecristi when it was in danger of dying out,” Johnson relates. “We also introduced new weaves and designs that are particularly attractive to customers, including the solid top of the calado (lace-like weave) as well as patterned ventilated crowns.”

Johnson himself was instrumental in promoting the industry in Cuenca when he placed an order for 60,000 Panama hat bodies with Resistol, along with orders for significant numbers of hats with various other manufacturers. “I am very proud of the role I played personally, along with Montecristi Custom Hat Works, in fueling and sustaining the global demand for these magnificent Panama hat bodies from Ecuador,” he says. “The

JAMES KALLAS JEWELERS Custom Is What We Do

Jewelry might best be described as personal adornment. Whether it’s a ring, necklace, bracelet or earrings, jewelry is often filled with memories, symbolism and sentiment. James Kallas of James Kallas Jewelers understands this intrinsically and strives to offer clients custom options, one-of-a-kind pieces and in-shop repairs.

Kallas’ breadth of workmanship underlies his depth of skill. “I started making jewelry when I was 12,” he relates. “Friends of my parents won a raffle on jewelry equipment, so I’d go into their basement and make jewelry. Over the years, I kept building on those first steps. I am mostly self-taught, but everyone along the way meets people who influence them. Even employees have influenced my work, and I am grateful for all my teachers.” Kallas has worked in Santa Fe since 1991, and he opened James Kallas Jewelers in 1996. At James Kallas Jewelers, there is something for everyone and, if you don’t see it, Kallas can make it. His custom line of stackable rings is made from different colored metals, diamonds and gemstones, allowing wearers to change their style simply by rearranging the order of the rings. This unique and chic line can also be paired with matching earrings. When a client comes in looking for custom jewelry, Kallas generally begins by sketching designs on paper. For instance, with an engagement ring, he starts with the shape of the stone. It could be a family stone, or it could be a stone that Kallas has sourced from a host of dealers around the country. Sometimes clients bring in a photo of something they like, or they might model it off another piece of jewelry they admire, like their mother’s ring. Customers also get ideas from finished pieces on display in the store.

After discerning what styles his client gravitates towards, Kallas puts the ideas to computer aided design, which can then be rendered for preview by the client. This way, variances in metals and stones can easily be modified until the client is fully satisfied with the design. When embarking on the process of creating a custom design piece of jewelry, clients often are not able to envision the final product. “By rendering a picture and making a wax model, we try to remove the unknown and give the client a more precise idea of what the final piece will look like,” explains Kallas. Once the wax model is milled and approved by the client, the piece is cast in Kallas’ on-site shop, which extends beyond the showroom. This makes James Kallas Jewelers the locals’ store for custom repairs. Kallas and his team are also experts in restoring your heirloom pieces to their former glory. Stop by to browse the showroom, discuss your jewelry ideas with Kallas, or see him at work.

Expert ADVICE

CARING FOR VINTAGE WATCHES

DAVID PERLOWIN Owner

World Class Watches 216 McKenzie Street 505.992.0200 www.wcwtimepieces.com

VINTAGE WATCHES ARE AKIN TO VINTAGE CARS; whereas the mechanical make-up hasn’t changed dramatically over the past decades, other improvements with regards to parts and design have made newer models more robust. But just as everyone loves a vintage car, there’s nothing like a vintage watch. And—similar to an older car— taking care of a vintage timepiece is paramount in keeping its value.

place. World Class Watches has a Rolex factory parts account, and can service your Sport Rolex without ultimately devaluing the piece.

Santa Fe’s World Class Watches owner David Perlowin is a Swiss-certified watchmaker who brings knowledge and experience to caring for timepieces both old and new. “There are few watches that maintain or increase in value over time,” Perlowin explains. “It has a lot to do with the manufacturer—like Patek Philippe and Rolex—and the models within those brands.”

Regardless of the rarity of your watch, it’s important to have even the newest model regularly serviced in order to keep it performing optimally. A mechanical watch should be serviced—which means being completely disassembled, cleaned, lubricated, and parts replaced as necessary—every five to seven years. Even if it’s been sitting in a drawer untouched, a watch should regularly be evaluated, as the mechanical lubricants can dry out or gum up, causing stress when it’s rewound.

Perlowin explains that the Sport Rolex, for example, is best treated at a place like World Class Watches instead of sending it to Rolex because the company often replaces the outdated parts, such as dials and hands, that made the watch so valuable in the first

Should you drop your watch or bang it on a hard surface, it should immediately be looked at; unseen damage like a loose screw can cause injury to the watch over time. Additionally, any signs of moisture or fog should signal a watch check-up, as rust can greatly harm a beautiful timepiece.

Regarding changing the battery in your watch, batteries used to contain mercury and thus last much longer than current battery models. Today, a watch battery needs to be changed on average every 16 months. When the second hand starts to jump in three to five second intervals, this is a good indicator your battery might be failing. And while battery changes are the most common cause for why a watch stops, in older vintage models, it is often because the movement and gaskets need to be replaced. This is yet another reason why regular service is important. World Class Watches sells pre-owned Rolex watches that have been serviced with genuine factory parts, setting the business apart from almost any other pre-owned seller. New watch brands available are Eterna and Luminox. From service to retail, Perlowin’s expertise makes him uniquely sought after in the realm of world class watches.

GERARD’S HOUSE SUPPORTS GRIEVING KIDS AND FAMILIES WHEN A CHILD OR TEENAGER EXPERIENCES THE DEATH of a parent or other loved one, Gerard’s House is there with free grief support services. Since 1997, the nonprofit has helped more than 10,000 children and youth regain hope, stabilize physically and psychologically, and restore sustaining relationships with family and friends in the face of serious loss. As the only organization in northern New Mexico providing free, long-term grief support to children and their families, this important and beneficial service is made available to anyone in the community who needs it. Because so many families experience barriers when they need grief support, Gerard’s House focuses on reaching the city’s most vulnerable grieving youth— kids who have immigrated from war-torn and impoverished regions, kids coping with homelessness, and kids who have attempted suicide. Services include 28 weekly peer grief support groups, a mobile unit, suicide-prevention programs, individual sessions, a summer camp, crisis response services, and support for parents/caregivers, all free of charge and bilingual for youth ages three through 21 who have experienced life-changing loss. Gerard’s House also provides seven weekly grief support groups for adults in English and Spanish, all free of charge.

The Young Parents/Teen Mom Nuestra Jornada Group supports young Latino parents and their babies and children by meeting their basic needs and helping young parents connect with each other, share their stories, and receive nurturing, support and important resources.

When you give to Gerard’s House or volunteer, you join its spirit of justice, love, healing and partnership. For more information about services, volunteering or partnering with Gerard’s House, please visit www.gerardshouse.org or call 505.424.1800.

Catalyzing Loved Ones to Fight Addiction By Emmaly Wiederholt

It’s been recognized that addiction can be just as detrimental to family and friends as to addicts themselves. Dr. Robert Meyers, Ph.D. and Professor Emeritus in Psychology at the University of New Mexico’s Center on Alcoholism, Substance Abuse and Addiction, took that idea one step further: concerned significant others can serve as a catalyst for getting addicts to seek help.

26

FineLifestyles SANTA FE & ALBUQUERQUE

HEALTH & WELLNESS

DR. MEYERS HIMSELF CAME FROM A DYSFUNCTIONAL FAMILY; his dad was alcoholic, and his bipolar mother was physically abusive. It prompted him to join the military at 17, which sent him to Vietnam. After returning to the US, he ended up in San Francisco in the heyday of Haight-Ashbury. After realizing he needed help from several drug addictions, he went to college on the GI bill and studied social work. While in undergrad, he was hired to work for an alcohol and drug program, which led him to the research that would define his career. In the 1970s at Anna State Hospital in Southern Illinois, Dr. Meyers first learned the Community Reinforcement Approach (CRA) for alcoholism treatment. At the time, Alcoholics Anonymous dominated the field (as it still does), but the problem with AA is that the addict must admit he/she needs treatment. It’s self-selected. With CRA, the emphasis is on the community to help get addicts sober. Part of Dr. Meyers’ work was doing the couples counseling section of CRA. “I realized that spouses had potentially far more influence over the drinker than one might expect,” he explains. “I began to wonder if we could work with spouses and help them learn strategies to get their partners into treatment.” In the 1980s, Dr. Meyers was recruited to work as deputy director at UNM’s Center on Alcoholism, Substance Abuse and Addiction. There, he met Dr. Bill Miller, who would become an important friend and colleague. Dr. Meyers told Dr. Miller his idea of working with spouses within CRA, and they began discussing what a clinical trial would look like. A new name for the approach was given: Community Reinforcement and Family Training, or CRAFT.

“Women will often hear they are enablers, but CRAFT never shames women for their actions.” From there, CRAFT gives CSOs effective communication tools for positive reinforcement. Instead of yelling at a drunk husband when he comes home late, a wife might calmly respond, “I’m glad you are home; I’m going to bed,” signaling her concern but not engaging in a fight. CRAFT emphasizes “I” language (“I feel this way”) instead of accusatory “you” statements (“You’re doing this to me”). A study by the National Institute on Drug Abuse found 74 percent of CSOs succeeded in engaging their loved ones in treatment through CRAFT, and 100 percent reported significant reductions in anger, anxiety and depression. Through multiple clinical trials, CRAFT has been found to be two to six times more effective at engaging resistant substance users than other models. “My goal has been to help other families avoid the pain that mine suffered,” Dr. Meyers reflects. “My mother was never able to achieve her most cherished goals of getting my father into treatment and getting him to stay sober. It is to her, and the millions of other families that are tortured by substance abuse, that my work is dedicated.” Dr. Meyers’ book, Get Your Loved One Sober: Alternatives to Nagging, Pleading, and Threatening, is an easy place to start for anyone in an addiction-related situation, and is available on Amazon.

Clinical trials quickly showed CRAFT to be a success. By the 1990s, Dr. Meyers was teaching CRAFT to health practitioners nationally and internationally. Today, it’s used for applications beyond substance abuse, including helping gamblers, family members of people who suffer from schizophrenia, and family members of incarcerated persons. In CRAFT, there is no confrontation, diagnosing or lecturing from concerned significant others (CSOs). In a classic example of the program’s application, a woman might come in because her husband is excessively drinking. “The idea is to first uplift her and let her know she hasn’t done a bad job,” says Dr. Meyers.

Dr. Nicholas Lam, physician and owner of AlluraDerm MD Med Spa, describes how, “CoolSculpting‰ is the world’s #1 noninvasive fat reduction procedure. There is no surgery, no diet or exercise, and little to no downtime. You can literally be eating a cheeseburger and binge watching your favorite show while you lose fat! And, once the fat cells are gone, they are gone for good!” With so many fat reduction treatments constantly emerging, one may wonder why Dr. Lam believes in CoolSculpting ‰. “With over six million treatments performed worldwide, the CoolSculpting‰ technology has shown consistently successful results on a variety of body types. The safety and efficacy data are impressive,” Dr. Lam explains. “However, it has been said that CoolSculpting‰ is 30 percent technology and 70 percent technique. The role of the person performing the treatment is far more important than the technology to create an effective and natural outcome.” Aubreanna, the operations manager at AlluraDerm, adds, “The CoolSculpting‰ specialists have been with us since 2007 and are experts at what they do. They have worked on male and female bodies of all shapes and sizes. Our staff are extremely proud of what they do. After thousands of treatments, they are still as passionate as ever when they see how CoolSculpting‰ has transformed our patients.”

GUIDED IMPLANT SURGERY

IN EXPLORING DENTAL OPTIONS, have you considered the extraordinary benefits of implants? If you’ve done your research, you’ve certainly heard of the state-of-the-art technology of implant placement called Guided Implant Surgery. As a dentist who places implants every day, I can say with confidence that the procedure is safe, predictable and efficient. Guided Implant Surgery is a superior option that provides an excellent solution for both dentists and patients alike, and this cuttingedge technology is available at Divine Dental. When a patient is in need of an implant, an oral evaluation and medical exam is performed in order to be certain that a patient is a candidate for guided implants. Once the need has been assessed, a

3D image (also known as CBCT or Cone Beam Computed Tomography) is created. CBCT is a special type of digital x-ray machine used to increase implant predictability, as regular dental x-rays are not sufficient. The 3D image is used to generate a virtual representation of the patient’s jaw and oral anatomy. We then develop a digital treatment plan to place the implant in the exact position in a virtual version of the patient’s jaw. A surgical guide custom-designed to fit the patient’s mouth is then fabricated. During the surgical procedure, the surgical guide is placed in the mouth and snapped on to the surrounding teeth. I’m then able to make a precise, guided osteotomy (a hole in the gums) and place the implant in the bone with exact depth and angulation. This precision is all made possible within the process of the guide/guided surgery. Our patients feel confident knowing that the exceptional benefits of Guided Implant Surgery include safety, comfort, durability, convenience and esthetic quality. It is also typically performed in much less time than previous methods of traditional dental implant surgery. Less incisions and sutures

LIPS’ STATE-OF-THE-ART CLINIC exclusively uses Juvederm™ medical-grade fillers for all facial procedures. The quality and integrity of facial fillers is paramount in establishing a level of confidence, safety and satisfaction for all clients. Juvederm™ fillers are medical-grade gels that are injected into areas of facial tissue where moderate to severe wrinkles and folds occur. The injected gels add immediate volume and restore a smoother appearance to the face. Dr. Lips uses the entire spectrum of Juvederm™ injectable products for different applications to the eyes, lips, mouth, cheeks and face. LIPS: Natural-looking lips that last Some people simply have naturally thin lips and just want to achieve a fuller appearance. Other people have noticed their lips thinning over time and may also have seen vertical lip lines become more noticeable. Your result will be fuller, more natural looking lips. CHEEKS: Subtle lift that lasts Wrinkles and lines aren’t the only signs of aging. Over time, the cheeks flatten and the skin may begin to sag. This is caused by a natural loss of volume in the cheek area, or what the experts call age-related midface volume loss. JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC, Winner of the 2014 Allure Best of Beauty Breakthrough Award, is designed to add volume beneath the skin’s surface to lift and contour the cheek area. NOSE AND MOUTH AREA: Write your story without parentheses lines and wrinkles Over time, your skin loses elasticity, which contributes to moderate to severe parentheses lines and wrinkles around the nose and mouth (such as nasolabial folds and marionette lines). CATARACTS

DR. MARK RASMUSSEN, OD Optometric Physician

1651 Galisteo St, Suite 1 505.983.7746 ultimateeyecaresantafe.com

JUNE IS CATARACT AWARENESS MONTH! That’s because cataracts are one of the leading causes of vision loss in people over 45. By the time we reach 80, more than half of us will have developed a cataract. A cataract is a clouding of the lens in your eye which is normally transparent. The lens, located inside the eye behind the iris and the pupil, focuses light onto the retina at the back of your eye, where it is converted to nerve signals that are passed to the brain, allowing you to see. When your lens becomes cloudy, the images projected onto your retina become blurry and unfocused and, therefore, the signal to the brain is also unclear. The effect is comparable to looking through a dirty or cloudy window. Usually cataracts develop slowly, so your vision gradually worsens. While most cataracts are a result of the aging process, there are also congenital cataracts that are present at birth, secondary cataracts that result from eye surgery or diseases

36

such as glaucoma or diabetes, and traumatic cataracts that result at any age from an injury to the eye. Research shows that there are environmental, health and behavioral risk factors that can also play a role in cataract development. These include smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or other sources, obesity, diabetes, hypertension, certain medications such as steroids or statin medications, history of eye injury or eye surgery, and family history.

vision (that can’t be corrected with a change in eyeglass prescription), glare from lamps, sunlight, oncoming traffic when driving at night or indoor lighting, colors appearing dim and less vibrant, halos around lights, double vision, poor night vision, and sudden improvement in near vision, a phenomenon known as “second sight.”

Cataracts don’t suddenly develop overnight. They generally start off small and only begin to noticeably affect your vision as they grow. The first symptom is usually that your vision becomes blurred, hazy or cloudy. Additionally, you may become sensitive to light, making sunlight, oncoming headlights or indoor lighting appear exceptionally glaring or bright. Colors may seem dim and you may notice halos around lights or double vision.

While you may be able to live with mild or moderate cataracts, severe cataracts are treated with surgery. The procedure involves removing the clouded lens and replacing it with an intraocular lens (IOL) implant. Cataract surgery is a common procedure that has a very high success rate of restoring vision to patients. Modern cataract surgery is frequently done as an outpatient procedure. Patients will have greatly improved vision the next day, and will continue to improve over the next few weeks. Surgery is often done in one eye first. The second eye, if needed, may be done a few weeks later.

Possible signs and symptoms of developing cataracts are blurry or cloudy

SPANISH MARKET

Honoring New Mexico’s Artistic Traditions By Emmaly Wiederholt

New Mexico’s Spanish colonial period stretched from 1598, when Don Juan de Oñate proclaimed the region “Nueva México,” to 1821, when Mexico won independence from Spain. During these 223 years, numerous art forms developed in the region that were created with local materials. While Spain exerted the greatest influence— particularly in the area of religious iconography—global trade items and the art of nearby Pueblos also wielded great influence, creating a uniquely Hispanic New Mexican aesthetic. 38

Today, many talented Hispanic artists continue to create extraordinary work using traditional methods and materials. The Spanish Colonial Arts Society supports their work through education, promotion and, of course, through Spanish Market. The annual event takes place July 27-28 this year at the Santa Fe Plaza. A smaller winter market takes place annually in Albuquerque at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. The Spanish Colonial Arts Society also manages the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art on Museum Hill, the only museum in the country dedicated to exhibiting the art of the Spanish colonial period. The Spanish Colonial Arts Society was founded in 1925 to preserve the local arts in the region. The first market in 1926 was called Native Market and originally combined what later split into Spanish Market and Indian Market. It was an effort to preserve and present the local art traditions of New Mexico and Southern Colorado, and has never veered from that mission. The market attracts 90,000 visitors each year and is the second largest event in Santa Fe after Indian Market. The event is internationally attended but especially attracts large numbers of Texans, Arizonians and Californians. The preceding week of events is called ¡Viva la Cultura! and includes studio tours, lectures, music, culinary events and more. Preview takes place the Friday before the market and is an opportunity to get first view of the best pieces of art. Spanish Market awards both money and ribbons to exceptional artists, and the prizes are highly sought after by artists and collectors alike.

There are 18 traditional categories (three subcategories: devotional arts, utilitarian arts, and decorative arts) as well as a 19th “innovations within tradition” category that began in 2011. The categories include colcha embroidery, copper engraving, furniture/furnishings, gesso reliefs, hide paintings, ironwork, painted bultos, painted reliefs, pottery, precious metals, retablos, revival arts, straw appliqué, tinwork, unpainted bultos, unpainted reliefs, weaving and woodcarving. The “innovations within tradition” category can function within any other category and was created to revitalize creativity within the market. Spanish Market is the largest and oldest juried Hispanic art market. It carries the work of more than 200 adult artists and 50 youth artists. Youth artists must be mentored by an existing juried adult artist. Adult artists must be one quarter Hispanic heritage, born in New Mexico or Southern Colorado, and anonymously submit three completed pieces to the jury. The pieces are judged on tradition and quality and, unlike many art markets, the guidelines are written by the artists themselves. Every five years, each category must be juried back into the market. This year, there are nine new adult artists coming into the market, two of whom have graduated from the youth to adult market. “Our Hispanic traditions are important to our community and sense of place, just as our Native American traditions are,” reflects David Rasch, director of Spanish Market. “Any tradition that doesn’t innovate throughout the ages stagnates and dies. You will see at Spanish Market very traditional art that has lasted for centuries. Right next to it, you will see innovative art that is based in the tradition. These traditions were born here, and they are still living here today.”

SAVING THE VIDEO LIBRARY By Anya Sebastian Photos Amanda McCarthy Oda

THE VIDEO LIBRARY IS A MUCH-LOVED LOCAL TREASURE. Established in 1981, it was Santa Fe’s first video rental store and now, 38 years later, it’s the last. It has outlived Blockbuster, Hastings and a number of other competitors, and even has the same owner, Lisa Harris. “I grew up in this business,” she says. “I was 21 when I started it and I still love what I do now as much as I did then.” And it shows. You will probably hear the sound of her infectious laughter before you even walk in the door. This is a happy place, where people hang out, talk movies and share stories. Lisa is convinced that social interactions are a reason for her continued success. “People who spend all day working on a computer and hardly talking to another human being are hungry for some real company,” she says. “Humans are social animals, and these days many of us live very isolated lives. We laugh here more in one day than many people do in a week.” Lisa is also a veritable encyclopedia of film. The store has over 16,000 movies, from cult classics to foreign films and obscure documentaries, over half of which cannot be found online, and chances are that she will be able to tell you the plot and even the cast of just about any movie you pick up. She will also let you know if she thinks it’s worth watching. Sadly, technology is taking its toll, so Lisa recently launched a ‘GoFundMe’ campaign to keep her business going. “We are the life blood for those who live in rural areas and can’t get an internet connection,” she points out. “Many of our customers tell us they would be devastated if we were forced to close.” The campaign is moving slowly towards its goal and anyone able to help support the ‘little video store that could’ can do so by visiting GoFundMe.com/save-the-vid. Or just go into the store, share some laughter, and drop off a check. This is one Santa Fe icon we cannot afford to lose. The Video Library 839 Paseo De Peralta, Santa Fe 505.983.3321

WINE CHILE CELEBRATES 29 YEARS Photos Gabriella Marks

TOUTED AS ONE OF THE BEST MAJOR WINE AND FOOD EVENTS IN THE WORLD, the Santa Fe Wine & Chile Fiesta kicks off its 29th edition September 22-29 at various venues throughout Santa Fe. Most major wine and food events are forprofit and corporate-owned, but Santa Fe’s festival is nonprofit, home-grown, grass-roots, and 100 percent community-owned and operated. The fiesta’s humble beginnings—29 years ago in the parking lot at the old Sanbusco Mall—featured 16 local restaurants and a dozen or so wineries and drew a crowd of about 300 people. This year’s Big Event, covering the entire outside grounds of the Santa Fe Opera, will feature 75 of Santa Fe’s best restaurants and over 100 wineries from around the world, including the honored Winery-of-the-Year, Tablas Creek (featured Champagne this year is Nicolas Feuillatte), and will have over 3,500 attendees and participants. Ticket sales for the Big Event on Saturday are limited to 2,500 and usually sell out weeks before the event. The limit is intentional to prevent overcrowding and to maintain a “boutique” feel. In addition to the Saturday Big Event, Santa Fe Wine & Chile features a film festival, wine-maker dinners at Santa Fe restaurants each evening, seminars, guest chef luncheons, a reserve tasting, tours, a major wine auction luncheon, a golf tournament, a Gran Fondo bike ride, and a Champagne brunch. The fiesta is a year-round effort of a 20-member volunteer board of directors, headed by this year’s president, Michael Trujillo, as well as a full-time paid executive director, Greg O’Byrne (now in his 26th year) and a full-time administrative assistant, Katharine Wright. More information, complete details and schedule for this year’s fiesta are available at SantaFeWineAndChile. org or call 505.438.8060.

SAZÓN

Captures the Spirit of Mexico

Photos Herschel Mair

SAZÓN CAPTURES THE SPIRIT OF MEXICO like no other establishment. The combination of superior cuisine, drinks, service and ambiance has distinguished Sazón from other establishments time and time again. If you’ve heard rumors from friends or neighbors about how great the restaurant is, here are some reasons to go experience it for yourself. Acclaimed chef and co-owner Fernando Olea, originally from Mexico City, is best known for his innovative development and use of mole sauces. Most recently, he has been inspired by seafood and enjoys adding seasonal ingredients to create a medley of unexpected and complimentary flavors. New menu items include octopus and mole poblano ice cream, though he has no intention of discontinuing favorites like the Sopa de Amor or the Dulce Simfonía. Olea was

featured on the cover of the May issue of American Airlines Magazine. “It was a big surprise for me,” says Olea of the national publicity. “I feel like it’s a privilege, honor and a big responsibility.” Sazón boasts the largest selection of Baja wines in the country. Of particular note are two wines from the producer Lechuza—a Nebbiolo and a Cabernet-Nebbiolo blend— as well as Solar Fortun’s “O Positivo”—a Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah blend. Sazón is also carrying Palafox’s “Marija” by winemaker Lourdes “Lulu” Martinez Ojeda of Bodegas Henri Lurton. As for the bar, Sazón has recently brought in some spectacular new tequilas. Código Extra Añejo is perfected over a 15-day process beginning with fully-matured agave, which are cooked in a stainless-steel oven, fermented utilizing an organic bakers yeast in Amatitán, distilled twice in custom-made pot stills, and carefully aged to taste in French White Oak Napa Cabernet barrels. “Up until very recently, the family who makes this tequila wouldn’t sell it,” explains co-owner Lawrence Becerra. “It was just for them and their friends to drink, and it followed a very old and secret family recipe. The family just released their tequila in the past year in very limited production.” Tequila Fuenteseca is similarly prestigious. Maker Enrique Fonseca made his name by producing single cru aged agaves. Sazón carries Fuenteseca Reserva Extra Añejo 15, Fuenteseca Reserva Extra Añejo 18, and Fuenteseca Reserva Extra Añejo 21. Fonseca’s process is quite complex; for the Fuenteseca Reserva Extra Añejo 21, the agave was harvested in late 1993, distilled just barely into the new year, and laid into

barrel in February 1994. The casks were stored for 10 years in a dry, earthen-floor aging room in the town of Atotonilco el Alto before being moved to the higher, cooler climate of Chapingo. The barrels rested there for an additional 11 years before finally being bottled in 2014. Fuenteseca Reserva Extra Añejo 21 is the oldest aged tequila in the world. Another unique offering is raicilla, a lesser-known artisanal Mexican spirit. Sometimes described as the moonshine of mezcal, raicilla isn’t made from a specific type of agave and has a different flavor profile than tequila or mezcal. Sazón is currently carrying two raicilla’s from the producer Balam, and is one of the only restaurants to receive an allocation. A new flight, called Los Parias (The Outsiders), features raicilla, sotol and bacanora. Sazón was recently awarded four diamond status by AAA for the third year in a row. Between the food, drinks, service and ambiance, the spirit of Sazón is more esteemed than ever. Chef Olea and the staff at Sazon would like to thank everyone for their support! AT THE MENTION OF ITALIAN CUISINE, most of us have an idea what that entails: various pizzas and pastas smothered in marinara sauce. Perhaps you’d be surprised to find that true Italian is much more nuanced and complex than the heavy fare most Americans expect. A new restaurant in town, Sassella, has the perfect recipe for educating patrons on how multifaceted Italian cuisine can be. Sazón co-owners Lawrence and Suzanna Becerra and Chef Fernando Olea have partnered with Chef Cristian Pontiggia to open Sassella —a new fine dining Italian restaurant—at the iconic location of 225 Johnson Street (formerly the O’Keefe Café and Maize) in Santa Fe. The restaurant hopes to open mid-June. The prodigious success of Sazón is applied to Sassella: fine dining, superior drinks, top notch service and stunning ambiance. In addition to working at two Michelin Star restaurants in Europe, Lombardy native Chef Cristian Pontiggia has received several awards from La Confrérie de la Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, an international gastronomic society. The Italian government recognizes him as a Master Chef, and he holds a culinary degree that certifies him as a Doctor of Enogastronomy. “Just like Mexican food, Italian food comes in many guises,” explains Lawrence. “Here in America, people have understood Mexican food to be Tex-Mex, but that’s not the culinary tradition of Mexico City, for example. Sazón has helped educate the public on what Mexican food really is. As the American palate becomes more sophisticated, people don’t want to eat an interpretation of a cuisine. They want the real thing. If you eat a pizza in Naples or Rome, it’s completely different than what you might eat in the US. Cristian is an extraordinary chef, and we’re lucky to have him bring his authentic Italian culture and cuisine to Sassella.” The name “Sassella” comes from a hamlet of 60 residents known for its vineyards near where Chef Cristian grew up. “I love every region of Italy, and I’ve included on Sassella’s menu several dishes only found in small towns throughout the country,” says Cristian. For example, zigoiner is unique to two towns near the Swiss border and is comprised of slices of Chianina beef wrapped around a stick served over a plate. “There are so many small towns throughout Italy that make certain dishes,” he comments. “I love researching these towns and bringing their plates to Santa Fe.” Chef Cristian is actively engaged in the community and volunteers as a Cooking with Kids Superchef. In addition to Chef Cristian’s exceptional Italian fare, Sassella features the finest wines from Italy, as well as champagne and rosé from France. The bar includes a large selection of gin and martini-style cocktails and an appreciable collection of amaros—a digestif found throughout Italy and a popular cocktail ingredient. Suzanna Becerra applies her eye for interior décor to implement an elegant black and white photography motif at Sassella. “Doing justice to a beautiful building with history and charm known to locals and tourists alike is a challenge I enjoy. As well, the outdoor patio is one of the best locations in all Santa Fe,” she describes. Sassella is open for lunch from 12 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., and dinner from 5 p.m. until close. The bar opens at 4:30 p.m. If you love Sazón, try Sassella; you’ll be just as enchanted. Sassella 225 Johnson St., Santa Fe 505.982.6734 sassellasantafe.com

A Local Hotspot AS THE CITY DIFFERENT FLOODS WITH SUMMER TOURISTS, those of us looking to grab a drink or a bite and get away from the hubbub of downtown head to Midtown Bistro. Conveniently located off San Mateo in a peaceful courtyard of fountains, the establishment is well regarded locally for its delicious fare, full-service bar, and incomparable ambiance. Midtown Bistro’s menu is best described as American with a Southwest flair, blending the flavors of New Mexico within favorite American dishes. “Our menu is seasonal. Depending on what fish, vegetables or fruits are in season, we reflect that in our cuisine. It should be a very good summer based on all the snow runoff we’ve had,” says longtime restauranteur and co-owner Edmund Catanach. Chef and co-owner Angel Estrada echoes: “I cook what is available and what is in season. For example, I’ll change the sides of the rack of lamb or halibut to be in line with what’s ripe at that time of year. Peaches, rhubarb, corn and heirloom tomatoes are all great summer crops I’m excited to use

in the coming months.” Chef Estrada is also re-introducing his popular gazpacho using pureed avocado and cucumber. Since adding a full-service bar two years ago, Midtown’s happy hour is a happening event weekdays from 5 to 7 p.m. In addition to the full bar and a variety of seasonal drinks and cocktails, the bar menu offers a great selection of snacks to munch on while enjoying a drink or two. just recently expanded its patio off the bar. The outdoor area includes seating for approximately 20 in Midtown’s famous serene environment. The older adjacent dining patio continues to be a beautiful respite with its lovely rock fountains and picturesque shading. Midtown Bistro’s legendary fountains are the legacy of Burke Denman, a builder and beloved member of the Santa Fe community who passed away in 2016. “His vision was to have a restaurant in this area surrounded by fountains for people to come and enjoy,” remembers Catanach. Midtown Bistro has now been in business and thriving for seven years. What started with just the dining room has extended into a full liquor license, bar and separate room for private parties as well as two tranquil patios. Catanach and Chef Estrada credit the locals for their success: “We are only in business because of our regulars. We are truly a local bistro with devoted customers and relationships in the community.” Chef Estrada adds: “We have been lucky since the minute we opened. We’ve had such great support from the locals. We want to thank them for that. We’re still growing, especially since we added the bar and private room for events.” “Every day we’re investing in the restaurant and looking for ways to enhance the ambiance and character of who we are,” sums Catanach. “We have a passion for this business, and we want to keep it alive and growing. Since we’ve already grown immensely, we know we must be doing something right.” Midtown Bistro 901 W. San Mateo Rd. 505.820.3121 MidtownBistroSF.com Photo by Liz Lopez

THE COMPOUND IS ALWAYS IN SEASON Photos Herschel Mair

THE SEASONS ARE INDELIBLY LINKED TO FOOD; we’re wired to crave what’s fresh. The farm-to-table movement has popularized the simple joy of eating freshly grown ingredients, and few restaurants have made as much of an effort to offer seasonal cuisine as The Compound. True to the changing of the seasons, The Compound Restaurant changes their menus every 90 days, and has done so for 19 years. “I am now on my 76th menu change,” says chef and owner Mark Kiffin. “A lot of restaurants haven’t changed 76 items on their menu, let alone developed 76 completely new menus. This is something we’re known for and which makes us unique and different from any other restaurant in Santa Fe.” A few beloved dishes, known as The Compound Classics, stay on the menu despite the season. These include schnitzel, tenderloin, pastrami and the restaurant’s famous burger. “These plates only encompass about 20 percent of our total menus,” explains Kiffin. “We don’t run many specials because our whole menu is special.”

54

FineLifestyles SANTA FE & ALBUQUERQUE

Each season’s menu is comprised of nine first courses, nine entrees and seven desserts. The Compound’s spring menu runs April, May and June, and features halibut, lamb and duck breast alongside strawberries, rhubarb and myriad greens – peas, asparagus, green garlic, sprouts and lettuce. Starting in July and continuing through September, the summer menu will take effect with its emphasis on corn, tomatoes and seafood. Fall of course emphasizes apples, pears, truffles and squash. Winter’s menu focuses on braising as well as tropical fruits, as those become ripe in equatorial regions during our coldest months. The Compound boasts two of the finest al fresco dining patios in the city. Because of the restaurant’s placement at the end of Canyon Road, its patios are surrounded by galleries and condos, which means no street noise. The idyllic ambiance is the perfect complement to the amazing food and flavors. The Compound also has a delightful side patio with beautiful south-facing sun.

DINING

After being asked to be part of the Santa Fe Margarita Trail, The Compound has created a variety of frozen margaritas to cater to the late afternoon walk-in traffic from Canyon Rd. The fruits of the season – think prickly pear, blood orange or strawberry – will be prominently featured in these refreshing drinks! If wine is more your style, The Compound’s extensive list includes more than 100 wines from around the globe. Italian and Spanish wines are particularly well represented. In fact, the bar menu itself is reasonable and original, and is available throughout the restaurant for both lunch and dinner. “Oftentimes, people will come and ask to be seated at the bar. We ask, ‘Do you want to sit at the bar, or do you just want to order from the bar menu?’ Most often, the answer is the latter,” relates Kiffin. As the largest restaurant in town able to seat 250 in the summer and 150 in the winter, The Compound is uniquely situated to accommodate any size of party. “The Compound is my life’s work,” Kiffin reflects. “I’ve been working in restaurants since I was 15. This is the greatest industry in the world; I can’t imagine doing anything else.” The Compound Restaurant 653 Canyon Rd., Santa Fe 505.982.4353 www.CompoundRestaurant.com

EL NIDO

The Perfect Pre-Opera Destination FEW THINGS ARE MORE STRONGLY ASSOCIATED with the City Different than the Santa Fe Opera. With summer in full swing, opera patrons head out to Tesuque to fill their ears and eyes with the sweet sounds and sights of the legendary stage. Since the opera’s earliest days, El Nido has served as the perfect pre-opera destination for dinner and drinks. Situated almost directly across US-84 in the heart of Tesuque Village and only seven minutes away from downtown Santa Fe, El Nido is conveniently located to catch the curtain on time. “This is a historic pre-opera restaurant. It is the place to go,” says general manager and sommelier Chris Banks. El Nido is offering pre-fixed three-course dinners specifically designed for opera goers. “Look for our opera menus showcasing El Nido’s popular wood fired kitchen concept serving fresh seafood, steaks and ever popular pastas, and we will ensure you’re out in time for the show,” says owner Rob Bowdon. Wood-fire grilled fare and the historic location are the perfect start to a special evening of La Bohème or Così Fan Tutte.

Banks has also devised a special cocktail in honor of the Santa Fe Opera’s 2019 season. Called ‘La Boheme,’ it is comprised of J.M. Rhum Agricole from the French Island of Martinique, fresh lime juice, French lavender simple syrup, and an Amarena Cherry. El Nido’s patio is among the premier al fresco dining experiences in the city. The spacious courtyard provides seating for 50 and, should a surprise monsoon come up, the entire area is covered. El Nido is sourcing local musicians for events throughout the summer on the patio, including brewery collaborations. The scene is perfect for a casual gathering of friends or family and the garden-like atmosphere is adorned with twinkly lights and trumpet vines. “Our patio is lively and great for sipping a cocktail in the evening.” says Bowdon. “Come hang out and enjoy.” “El Nido’s got its place in history—think about the people who have come into this bar over the years,” reflects Banks. If you’re planning to attend the opera or just enjoy a fun night out, El Nido welcomes you to join its history by partaking in the fantastic food, exceptional drinks and warming ambiance. Please follow El Nido on Facebook for updates on their summer patio events.

Delicious Dining Through Community Connections

FOR MORE THAN 20 YEARS, IL PIATTO HAS STRIVEN to provide guests with a unique and enjoyable dining experience through community building with local organizations such as the Santa Fe Farmer’s Market, Slowfood, Farm to Table, Earth Care, Chef’s Cooperative, La Montanita Coop, Squash Blossom Produce and others. They purchase directly from New Mexico farmers, foragers and ranchers, including Romero Farms, Freshies, Estancia dos Rocas, Kyzer Pork, Beelers Heritage Pork, Native American Beef Consortium, Espanola Valley Farms, Camino de la Paz and Green Tractor Farms. All their breads, pastries and pastas use Sangre de Cristo Mills Whole Wheat Flour, grown and ground in New Mexico. They use only European style grass fed butter and, while far from the ocean, il Piatto utilizes a local fishmonger to fly in wild sustainable or biodynamically farmed seafood. Chef Matt Yohalem, proprietor and executive chef, came up in acclaimed kitchens with top-notch chefs including Commander’s Palace with Emerill Lagasse, Le Cirque with Daniel Boulud, and Santa Fe’s The Coyote Café with Mark Miller. Yohalem opened il Piatto in 1996 as a farm-to-table restaurant and quickly became a local champion for the movement, a role he cemented as a longtime board member for the Santa Fe Farmer’s Market Institute. Il Piatto’s award winning wine list is carefully curated by in-house sommelier, Jamie Taylor. Boasting a custom-made wine cave, they offer a wide variety of wines from all over the world. The restaurant’s highly acclaimed happy hour draws locals and tourists alike, featuring nightly happy hour from 4:30 to 6 p.m. All appetizers and glasses of wine are half price, making it the best deal in town! Joseph's Culinary Pub

WHERE FOOD & ART MEET By Anya Sebastian

JOSEPH WREDE, CHEF/OWNER OF JOSEPH’S CULINARY PUB, IS A FOOD ARTIST. His artistry is clearly apparent, not only in the presentation of his dishes, but also in the unique combination of ingredients and flavors. Eating at his restaurant is a culinary adventure. Where else would you find carrot and curry crab soup, New Mexico lamb tartare, or roasted root vegetables with carrot sheep cheese custard? “Both my parents were artists,” explains Wrede, “and when artists make money, what do they do? They go out to dinner and eat well, so I was very familiar with good restaurants growing up. My mother is of Italian descent and also loved to cook, so art and food were always constant parts of my life.” A talented artist himself, Wrede was going to follow in his parents’ footsteps, but his love of food won out and he went to culinary school in New York instead. Even so, the artist in him was still very much alive, and the two came together perfectly as cooking became the way for him to express himself artistically. “I think of myself as a culinary artist rather than a chef,” he says. “I love making art with food, especially in an art town like Santa Fe.” Chef Wrede’s culinary journey did not start out in Santa Fe, however. He first came to New Mexico on a college trip,

60

FineLifestyles SANTA FE & ALBUQUERQUE

and when the time came to choose a place to open his first restaurant, he decided on Taos. “It was much less expensive to get started there,” he says simply, “and since it was my first venture, that was an important consideration.” As it turned out, that first restaurant, named Joseph’s Table, was an outstanding success. It acquired a stellar reputation that reached well beyond Taos but, after 16 years, Wrede decided it was time to move to a bigger marketplace. Santa Fe seemed the obvious choice. “During the time I was in Taos, Santa Fe had become well-known as a ‘foodie’ town,” he explains. “Think about it: the town has no football team, no baseball team, no sports stadium; its identity is defined by the opera house, art and food, so it seemed like a perfect fit.” Joseph’s Culinary Pub is now five years old and has become a firmly established part of Santa Fe’s food scene, but with a difference. Artistic touches are everywhere, from the handpainted wall designs to the hand-crafted plates and the visual presentation of the food itself. The atmosphere is informal, ‘smart casual’ and welcoming, and the menu features top quality ingredients, mostly locally sourced and organic. Dishes cover a wide range of prices and change frequently depending on what’s in season, what’s available, and what chef Wrede’s imagination inspires him to create.

DINING

“My main concern is to attract the broadest possible audience,” he says, “especially on nights not driven by tourism. I need to have dishes that appeal to locals who are not celebrating anything, but just want to enjoy an evening out in an energetic environment.” As an accompaniment to the unconventional and artistically inspired menu, the restaurant offers an eclectic wine list featuring carefully selected, small wineries and dynamic, organic wines. Excellent service by a knowledgeable waitstaff has always been a priority for Wrede, and his servers are well trained to guide and assist visitors in making the most satisfying choices. For a completely different dining experience and a memorable culinary adventure, treat yourself to a trip to Joseph’s Culinary Pub. Your taste buds will thank you and, chances are, you’ll be back! We can now look forward to the pleasures of outdoor dining: picnics, garden parties, barbecues, meals on sun-soaked patios and porches, and of course, since it’s also opera season, tailgating. For anyone who desires more than the boring bottle of wine or beer to accompany their outdoor dining experience, Susan’s Fine Wine and Spirits offers an innovative selection of quality choices, sure to delight even the connoisseur. Gone are the days when the only alternative to a bottle was lowquality ‘wine-in-a-box.’ A visit to Susan’s Fine Wine and Spirits will soon convince you that times have changed and outstanding beverages are available in outdoor-friendly packaging. Susan’s has many varieties of French wines that are not only excellent quality, but also good value. Yes, they’re even in a box that contains the equivalent of four bottles (three liters) at a cost of just three bottles, effectively giving you a free bottle. The contents even last up to 30 days, because dispensing keeps out the oxygen, thereby preserving the wine. There are obviously no corks or corkscrews to contend with, and—another bonus—the packaging is recyclable. Other options abound, too, like cans of sparkling wines and refreshing rosé from Oregon, each about half a regular bottle, or, for a group gathering, pick up a pack of four single-serving cans, complete

Cans are now considered mainstream for corporate producers and independent artisans alike. Feel like a cocktail before dinner? Just pop open a cold can of tequila with grapefruit, a margarita, gin and tonic, a Bloody Mary, or a wine spritzer...Susan’s has them all. Even artisanal sakes from Japan are available in single-serve containers, with prices ranging from $5 to $10. Beer lovers are not forgotten either; on the contrary, Susan’s has over 700 kinds to choose from, the majority being craft and imported beers. Lighter varieties include lagers, IPAs and pilsners, and many seasonal releases, including fruit-based sours from craft breweries to complement summer dining.

NOTES FROM A LOCAL

AMARO

The Perfect Digestif NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH AMARETTO, amaro (Italian for “bitter”) is an Italian herbal liqueur commonly consumed as an after-dinner digestif. Production can be traced back to the 19th century with recipes originating in monasteries and pharmacies. Amaros have a bitter-sweet flavor, sometimes syrupy, and have an alcohol content between 16 and 40 percent. Amaro is typically produced by macerating herbs, roots, flowers, bark, and/or citrus peels in alcohol, either neutral spirits or wine, mixing the filtrate with sugar syrup, and allowing the mixture to age in casks or bottles. Amaros are traditionally drunk neat, often on the rocks, after dinner as a digestive because of their medicinal properties. Increasingly, amaros are used to create modern-style cocktails and feature prominently in martinis using gin and Italian vermouth. The most

64

FineLifestyles SANTA FE & ALBUQUERQUE

popular amaros are Fernet, Nonino, Lucano and Montenegro. Amaro Fernet is commonly referred to as an acquired taste due to its strength and pungency. It is also a proven antidote for a hangover. Drink before bed and you will wake up feeling fresh as a rose the next day! Amaro Nonino is one of the smoothest amaros. It is flavored less with herbs and more with high quality grapes that make the base liquor. Amaro Lucano and Amaro Montenegro are sometimes confused because of their similar labels. Both use a creamy yellow label with oldfashioned drawings. Lucano comes in a tall elegant bottle and the Montenegro in a short, wider bottle. Both are easy drinking and ideal for new amaro drinkers. Don’t wait until you visit Italy to try these delicious drinks. Many labels can easily be found locally. They are increasingly carried in bars where mixologists create some stunning cocktails. If you want to experiment at home, try this delicious cocktail using Amaro Nonino!

Who Needs Ordinary? “YOU SPEND A THIRD OF YOUR LIFE IN BED,” states Barbara Lenihan, owner of Pandora’s, a Santa Fe boutique specializing in unique upscale bedding and accessories. “You may as well spend it totally comfortable. The bedroom should be a soothing and relaxing place.” Consider, for instance, Missoni, a women’s clothing line that expanded into home décor and is now one of the largest and most sought after labels in the world. Pandora’s has proudly carried the line for 18 years. “Their designs and colors are simply unmatched,” says Lenihan. Pandora’s carries Missoni sheets, duvet covers, pillows, throws, towels and robes. Libeco is a Belgian brand renowned for its linen products, and Pandora’s has carried Libeco linens for more than 15 years, including pillows, bedspreads, blankets, sheets, towels and duvet covers. In fact, Pandora’s is the only place you can get Libeco (and Missoni for that matter) products in the state. “Linen is just unbeatable for sleeping,” describes Lenihan. “It’s cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, and it lasts forever.” She describes its look as “rustic,” perfect for a Santa Fe style themed bedroom. Award-winning Kevin O’Brien out of Philadelphia is an artist turned designer who has pioneered techniques in home textiles, especially silk and velvet. Pandora’s jumped on the bandwagon of this talent early on. “Gorgeous patterns – very intricate,” Lenihan relates. “They take a month or so to produce, so we’re lucky to carry his throws, pillows and bedspreads.” Let the chic and colorful textures and styles of O’Brien’s lines make your bedroom a place of inspiration! TREASURE HUNTING SEASON

PERHAPS YOU ALREADY KNOW THAT STEPHEN’S A CONSIGNMENT GALLERY has 13,000 sq. ft. of artwork, antiques, furniture, decorative arts, mid-century modern, Native American arts, designer jewelry, sterling silver, and vintage Mexican silver and arts, but did you also know that Stephen’s estate sales are an incredible opportunity to find beautiful, diverse and rare treasures? Summer is estate sale season, and no one is more in tune with the business than owner and founder Stephen Etre. “Estate sales are generally the result of life changes— inheritance, moving, death, even downsizing,” Etre explains. Because of his reputation and connections with banks, attorneys and real estate agents in the area, he often gets calls asking him to empty a house relatively quickly. “Real estate drives the decision making,” Etre acknowledges. “Our job is to respond fairly quickly. It’s not uncommon for us to assess and schedule an estate sale in one to three weeks.” In an assessment, Etre and his team look for enough quality items to conduct a sale. “We’re full service: we assess, organize, merchandize, run the sale, remove consignment items, and arrange donations.” Etre has worked closely with

shelters and nonprofits throughout town to get any remaining and donatable items after the sale where they need to go. Stephen’s conducts eight to 10 estate sales per summer, so there’s potential that on any given weekend a sale may take place. Local treasure hunters can find out about upcoming events by either visiting stephensconsignments.com and checking the calendar or by joining Stephen’s mailing list and receiving updates when there’s an upcoming estate sale or store event. Etre also advertises estate sales in the newspaper classifieds. Etre’s advice for neophytes is to check the website for images of items you might be interested in purchasing, though he cautions that web photos are not always indicative of the whole selection. It’s also best to arrive early. Estate sales can be incredibly popular; Etre shares how particular sales have prompted people to sleep in their cars the night before. Entry is granted first come first serve by receiving a number.

TESTIMONIALS One of my favorite places in Santa Fe! From furnishing my child’s room many years ago, to refurnishing it more recently and replacing worn-out living room furniture, Stephen’s is my go-to place for unique, well-crafted and interesting items. -Tamara L.

Stephen’s Consignment is a wonderful store packed with lots of great items to support your needs from art to furniture to pottery and lovely customer service. I highly recommend Stephen’s for your home needs. -Gavin C.

Had the opportunity to consign a piece of pueblo pottery with Stephen and was very happy with the results. Got a fair price and was paid quickly. -Kenneth S.

“Every sale poses its own challenges and opportunities. There’s no patent formula,” sums Etre, who has been in the business for 40 years and has been running estate sales for 35 years. He adds: “Even if it’s as small as a key-ring, it makes my day when someone finds something they love and want to take home.”

Antiquing is a passion passed on to me by my mother. I’ve traveled extensively across the country and around the world and I can say that Stephen’s A Consignment Gallery is top notch!

the upshot

We all like to think of our homes as a great investment. Good real estate markets result in property owners making more money from their ownership than they may earn in annual salaries. Modest performing markets often result in a homeowner having lived there essentially for free, while of course we know what a bad market does. Although it’s all a matter of timing, history shows time and again, that over the long term a homeowner typically ends up in one of the first two categories. Even considering the housing crash in 2008, homeownership continues to outperform the stock market. Is this the time for you to buy a property as an investment for the long term?

Santa Fe homeowners and sellers continue to enjoy stability and slowly increased pricing while buyers are challenged by little inventory and often times dealing with competing offers. Investors are still actively buying for rental purposes or to remodel and flip. We do not see these trends changing for the balance of 2019.

According to the National Association of Realtors the average homeowner stayed in their home for 13 years with longer periods for multi-generational properties like we see here in Santa Fe. Millennial homeowners tend to sell or buy more frequently, averaging under a decade with any given property. With that in mind, here is a 20-year snapshot on the appreciation of home values in Santa Fe County according to the Federal Finance Housing Agency.

Finally, Santa Fe seems to be attracting young professionals. In the past few years, we have seen a noticeable increase in younger buyers attracted to our unique city and bringing with them different wants and needs when it comes to housing.

Interestingly, the Santa Fe County average residential sales price in 1999 was $258,000. Ten years later, in 2009 it had increased by 66% to $429,000 or an average increase of 6.6% per year. In 2018, the average price was $477,000, an increase of 11% or an average increase of 1.2% per year since 2009.

MANY HOMES IN SANTA FE have grand portals, designed for outdoor living at its best. We are very fortunate to have spectacular views, one of these being west to the Jemez Mountains. However, at the time of day when most people want to relax or entertain on the portal, the western sun has been building heat to such a degree that it is just too hot to enjoy. In New Mexico, we also encounter moderate to high winds which also can be a detriment to the outdoor living experience. The Santa Fe Awning Wind and Solar Screen™ can address both issues. Typically mounted on the side of the main support beam out on the edge of the portal, these screens can be lowered to block the sun and/or locked down to block the wind. The screens are made from a dark colored mesh fabric, called

76

FineLifestyles SANTA FE & ALBUQUERQUE

Buffalo, that blocks 90 to 95 percent of the direct sun but still allows for a view to the outside. The mesh fabric is so dense that wind is significantly blocked as well. For homeowners with a west, east or south facing picture window, not only can heat be a problem, but ultraviolet sun bleaching of furniture, art and flooring is also an issue. Here too, The Santa Fe Awning Wind and Solar Screen™ can be your best friend. The idea is that if you block the sun from the exterior, like a shade tree, you are blocking the heat and UV before it penetrates the window and, as with the portal application, your view is preserved. The Santa Fe Awning Wind and Solar Screen™ can be manually operated up or down with the ease of a hand crank, similar to an operable sky light, or by remote control motorization. Today, most screen systems we install are motorized. Motorization changes the way the screens are used for many people. If one must manually crank screens up and down and lock them into place, more often than not they are left down or up, thus not being used at all. A motorized system, on the other hand, is used constantly to regulate the sun’s heat with the push of a button. It is more costly, yes, but most users would say, “It’s worth every penny!” Motorization

also offers smart phone applications which allow users to operate the screens from anywhere in the world. There are also The Santa Fe Awning Shade Sails, which are primarily a summertime application that works best when applied over sun drenched areas like patios, ponds or swimming pools. These are typically attached to the house on one or two sides and projected out to a post or to another wall. Sails are designed with a mesh type fabric that has 90 percent sun block, leaving a patio cool enough to walk on barefooted or shading a pond or pool to keep the water temperatures down.

PRIORITIZES PET SAFETY AND HAPPINESS IMAGINE YOUR PET NOT ONLY TOLERATING A TRIP TO THE GROOMER or kennel, but enjoying the experience. When you put your beloved dog or cat into the care of Sharon Newcomb at Top Dog Pet Resort, you know you’re entrusting your pet with the best, and their obvious pleasure shows. For more than 50 years, Newcomb has worked with canines as a breeder, handler and trainer, and for more than 30 years has been an AKC International judge. She was most recently a toy group judge at the 2019 Westminster Dog Show. The woman knows dogs! That’s why, at Top Dog, the dogs aren’t boarded together unless they live together, and the beds are off the floor with fluffy bedding. Newcomb provides concierge feeding; if your furry friend has medications, you can rest assured they are taking them. The grounds are triple fenced, and Newcomb takes pride in “cleaning the kennels as I clean my own house”—no hosing with chemicals. When the dogs pee, it drains into limestone, not puddles on concrete like in many kennels. Additionally, the full-service grooming shop offers meticulous services. “We strive for a stress-free environment,” describes Newcomb. “We give you your pet back better than when you brought it in.” Individual indoor kennel suite

Newcomb finds her business primarily competing with pet sitters. While it might sound like a good idea to leave your pet at home with a friend, most sitters can’t recognize a dietary or wellness problem. “Having a professional in charge of your pet at our facility is better than that uneasy feeling you get as you hand your house key to a stranger when you leave town,” Newcomb counsels. “The stories I have heard are endless, not the least of which are parties in your home during your absence.” “Sharon can read a dog’s temperament like none other,” says Lea R., who has used Top Dog since it opened two years ago. “Sharon grooms our Shih Tzu so that her sweet nature shows, especially around the eyes. The safety of the dogs in her care is of the utmost priority. I’ve referred Top Dog to several neighbors who’ve all been very pleased.” Mention Fine Lifestyles Magazine and have your pet’s nails trimmed for free the first time your dog or cat is groomed or boarded at Top Dog. THE

WOULD FEEL AT HOME IN THIS GARDEN! By Debbie Stone Photos Debbie Stone

YOU MIGHT THINK YOU’VE STEPPED ONTO ANOTHER PLANET at Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay. This park takes the traditional conservatory concept up more than just a notch or two. With its Supertrees, suspended walkway, and ginormous domed glass greenhouses, the place is a horticulture wonderland with a futuristic vibe. This “green jewel” is a showpiece of innovation and artistry that presents the plant kingdom in a fresh, new way. It entertains, while educating visitors about plants from around the world, ranging from species in cool, temperate climates to those in tropical forests and habitats. The park is comprised of two distinct waterfront sectors: Bay South and Bay East. Bay South, the largest of the gardens, is home to the attraction’s exciting wow factors. Bay East, on the other hand, is a vast waterfront green space, perfect for picnicking and relaxation. It’s hard not to miss the iconic Supertrees that dominate Bay South, making it look like something out of a sci-fi comic book.

80

FineLifestyles SANTA FE & ALBUQUERQUE

These colossal vertical gardens, 18 in total, are between 82 and 164 ft. tall. They’re comprised of nearly 163,000 plants and more than 200 species and varieties of bromeliads, orchids, ferns and tropical flowering climbers. Each tree consists of a reinforced concrete core and planting panels for the living trunk and canopy. The canopies are designed to provide shade in the day. At night, they come alive in a dazzling sound and light show. For another perspective, head up to the OCBC Skyway and stroll along the walkway connecting two of the marvels. Sitting 72 ft. above ground, this aerial path gives visitors a panoramic vista of the gardens and Marina Bay skyline. The domes are also prominent features of Bay South. The Flower Dome, which spans nearly three acres, has the distinction of being the largest glass greenhouse in the world. Thousands of glass panels of different shapes and sizes cover the surface area of the dome in colossal jigsaw puzzle fashion. Inside, there’s a changing showcase of flowers and plants from five continents.

SPORTS, REC & TRAVEL

Cloud Forest, the other glass conservatory, is a tropical paradise. Enter to the thundering sounds of the world’s tallest indoor waterfall and be confronted by a 115 ft. tall mountain covered in lush vegetation. When you’re ready to explore this distinctive formation, start at the top, where you’ll be surrounded by cloud forest plants typically found at around 6,500 ft. above sea level. As you follow the Cloud Walk into the Lost World, you’ll have the opportunity to learn about rare plants and their quickly-disappearing environs, while taking in breathtaking views of the Marina Bay waterfront through the spectrally selective glass panels. If you get hungry while exploring this famed attraction, grab a bite at one of the cafés on site. Or, dine with a view at nearby Marina Bay Sands Hotel. Drink in Singapore’s picturesque cityscape atop the 57th floor of this famed luxury property. From this birds-eye perch, the architectural wonders of the Gardens by the Bay can be fully appreciated.

AMATEUR GOLFERS SEEK COVETED CITY TITLE By Henry Gerard Lucero Photos Henry Gerard Lucero

It’s the moment they’ve been waiting for. Before the fanfare and cheering commences, there’s a steep challenge ahead. As the eagerness creeps in, so does the pressure to deliver an almost perfect score.

AS YOU WIDEN YOUR STANCE AND ZONE IN on the greens, you mentally prepare to analyze the outcome. As you clench the golf club, you take a deep breath and let it soar. Perhaps it’s the perfect shot, perhaps it’s not. A challenge that looks so simple is, in fact, endlessly complicated.

“You’re always looking at perfecting your game and it’s something I strive to do,” states Trujillo. “Winning the City Championship meant a lot to me—especially in the city in which I grew up—and to be proclaimed the best golfer means you accomplished something.”

Every golfer knows it takes a significant amount of time, mostly years, to perfectly craft their skills. It’s a process that ensures the willingness to showcase patience along with mental toughness.

The 36-hole tournament features five divisions (Championship, Business, First, Ladies, and Senior) and includes a scenic-range of challenging terrain. “I wouldn’t say the pressure builds but on the first day you need to set precedence for the next few days,” describes Trujillo. “Every course is different and you’re always looking at something new.”

After years of practice, amateur golfers throughout Santa Fe have gathered year-after-year to compete in the City’s most competitive sports championship. For a selected few, it’s a chance to defend their current title and for others, it’s another shot at redemption. Just ask Eric Trujillo, 2018 City Golf Champion. After a few years of finishing in the Championship flights top three, almost beating out then 2016 City Champion Marty Sanchez in a dual-off, Eric knows how to follow through.

84

FineLifestyles SANTA FE & ALBUQUERQUE

The 2019 Championship, which will be featured exclusively at Marty Sanchez Links de Santa Fe this year, has welcomed residents for over 30 years. “We have a lot of seasoned golfers, just like our current champion Eric Trujillo, who look forward to playing in the tournament by training months in advance for their chance to be named the acclaimed city champion,” says Jennifer Romero, Golf Course General Manager.

Logistics always play a part with one goal in mind; to provide a stellar golf experience. “For decades, the Santa Fe City Golf Championship has been regarded as the premier and most competitive offerings for Santa Fe golfers,” shares Alo Brodsky, PGA Head Golf Pro at Marty Sanchez Links de Santa Fe. “It’s an event that has embodied competitive golf within our community for years.” Although the tournament’s name and format has been changed throughout its duration, the event has been admired and upheld by golf enthusiasts. This year’s tournament is set for Friday, July 19th and Saturday, July 20th. Eligibility is open to golfers with a 25 handicap or lower; GHIN# required (Except Championship Flight). All golfers must verify their amateur status, and all net participants must have a valid USGA approved handicap number. BUSINESS TECHNOLOGY

PROMOTING TECHNOLOGY IN NEW MEXICO By Emmaly Wiederholt

TECHNOLOGY INCREASINGLY ENCOMPASSES ALL ASPECTS OF LIFE, from how we communicate and are entertained, to how we conduct business, to how we find comfort in our homes or on travel. Hubs like the Bay Area, Seattle and Austin have embraced tech and transformed their economies along the way. There’s no reason the Land of Enchantment can’t also reap the rewards of a healthy tech sector. The New Mexico Technology Council (NMTC) is an organization focused on creating and promoting opportunities for tech businesses across New Mexico. Founded in 1999 as the New Mexico IT and Software Association, it evolved within 10 years from an all-volunteer organization to a membership-driven association with a broad economic focus. “Technology has continued to advance into every sector, so our membership now has an extensive reach,” says NMTC’s Executive Director Deborah Breitfeld. The council’s 200 plus members include UNM, CNM, Decartes Labs, Bigbyte.cc, Presbyterian Healthcare, PNM, Nusenda Credit Union, Fat Pipe NM, US Bank, AFRL, RiskSense, the City of Albuquerque, and Los Alamos and Sandia National Labs. Membership is open to individuals and businesses across all sectors. NMTC has many ongoing initiatives and programs. The council supports regulatory issues at the state legislature each session that encourage broadband initiatives and workforce/economic development such as angel investment tax credits and job training incentive programs. Members are mobilized to lobby for the implementation of thoughtful policies that develop and grow technological innovation. The council also hosts two events every year. The Women in Technology Celebration will take place on March 28th at the

Albuquerque Marriott Pyramid North and will laud eight honorees—women around the state doing important work promoting technology. “It really highlights these fiercely intelligent women who are changing the face of IT and breaking down barriers,” says Breitfeld. “They vary from the private sector to the universities to the laboratories and are all doing groundbreaking work that really makes a difference in our state.” The Women in Technology Celebration also highlights several student programs that promote STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education. For example, the winners of the UNM Mobile App contest—which provides an opportunity for students from UNM and CNM to develop and apply coding skills to make useful mobile applications—will also be recognized. NMTC’s annual conference, ExperienceIT, takes place every September. Sponsored by Deloitte and featuring specialists from around the country, everything from social engineering and artificial intelligence to software development and blockchain applications is covered in the one-day event. During the rest of the year, peer groups provide monthly opportunities for members to connect. Groups focus on any range of issues, including cybersecurity, big data, 3D printing,

healthcare, and women in technology. Speakers from around the state present on various professional development topics. NMTC partners with NM Workforce Connection on a program called TechHire NM, which is part of a national initiative funded by the Department of Labor. The job training program prepares New Mexico residents ages 17 to 29 for the technology sector by teaching them skills in computer coding and helping them get placed in positions. NMTC works on the outreach side informing employers of this valuable resource. Finally, DART is an initiative supported by NMTC to grow the software development cluster by bringing new contracts to New Mexico, which has the labor force and training programs to compete for lucrative contracts, not to mention the lower cost of doing business. “Technology is revolutionizing our economy, our workforce, and every aspect of our lives,” sums Breitfeld. “New Mexico has the resources and talent to continue to grow our technology sector.”

MAYOR’S MEMO FOR MORE THAN 400 YEARS, the City of Santa Fe has thrived in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, offering a unique blend of history and culture in an unparalleled setting. Since being elected mayor a year ago, I have committed to making Santa Fe the most sustainable and family-friendly city in the country. No other city combines the culture, diversity and heritage we have here in Santa Fe. Summer brings a multitude of festivals, including the world-famous Santa Fe Opera that kicks off its season June 28, a celebration of Folk Art (July 12-14), Spanish Market (July 27-28), Indian Market (August 13-18), the traditional burning of Old Man Gloom Zozobra (August 30), and the Wine & Chile Fiesta (September 22-29). Shopping stretches from the historic Plaza into hundreds of unique neighborhoods and boutiques featuring wearable art, jewelry, boots, hats and more. The City Different has a thriving music scene, museums including The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, the unique art experience of Meow Wolf, and galleries around the city including Canyon Road and the Railyard District. More than a million people visit every year, drawn by our clear skies and the sights and smells that are so uniquely Santa Fe, like hanging chile ristras and burning piñon. Please stop by one of our Visitor Centers at the Downtown Santa Fe Plaza, Santa Fe Railyard or inside the Community Convention Center. Friendly volunteers will answer your questions, share their knowledge, and provide you with an insiders’ guide to our beautiful city. I want to invite you to come stroll our streets, enjoy the shade of a hidden placita, and spend some time in a timeless place that will always make good on the promise of a warm welcome. Have a wonderful time in The City Different,
