The lights that adorn the trees are simply a sight to behold and can really put one in the holiday spirit! Canyon Road, with all of the great decorations and lights, is another great place to stroll during the evening. Nothing says the Holiday Season like food and drink! See what several of our featured restaurants are ready to serve up for their best holiday dinners. Check out the “Chef ‘s Favorite Holiday” feature in this issue. Fashion STARTS HERE Anya Sebastian
THE SANTA FE COMMUNITY COLLEGE is the only public college in New Mexico to offer an associate degree in fashion design, so for anyone looking for a way to break in to the fashion industry, this is a great place to start. The two-year course, which was established in the early 1980s, covers everything from textile science (how fabrics are made) to garment construction, fashion design history, pattern making and computer-assisted fashion illustrations. That part of the course is run by one of the country’s most well-known and respected experts, Bina Abling, who taught for many years at the Parsons School of Design in New York city and also worked with international fashion designers like Oscar de la Renta. She has also written many books on the subject and when she finally decided to retire to Santa Fe, the college snapped her up immediately. The course is limited to 15 people, the maximum the college’s fully equipped design studio is able to accommodate. Most are local, with Native Americans making up a strong contingent of students, often as much as 30 to 40 per cent of the total. “Many of them go on to sell their work at Indian Market,” says course director Ezra Estes. “Other students may choose to show their designs on Etsy or at local artisan markets and some are now working in the film industry.” Students display their creations in the Visual Arts Gallery on the college campus and in fashion shows around town. One recent graduate launched her collection during New Mexico Fashion Week. Career opportunities for graduates extend to other fields as well, such as marketing, retail sales, becoming a buyer, stylist or fashion writer, while some use the course as a foundation for moving on to complete a bachelor degree at a 4-year college. For further information, check out the Fashion Design program at the Santa Fe Community College website (sfcc.edu).

James Kallas understands those intricacies and strives to offer clients custom options, one of a kind pieces, restoration of your heirloom pieces that can later me passed on as well as in house repairs. At James Kallas Jewelers, there is something for everyone. If you don’t see it, he can customize something just for especially for you!

Occasionally, clients will bring in a photo of another piece of jewelry they admire. Clients also get ideas from finished pieces on display in the store. We tailor the design to the client’s specific taste. James generally begins by sketching the design on paper. The final hand sketched design gets input into a computer program or James can fabricate it by hand. The whole process takes two to three weeks to complete. BUYING VINTAGE WATCHES
DAVID PERLOWIN Owner
World Class Watches 222 East Marcy Street Ste. 9 Santa Fe 505-992-0200 wcwtimepieces.com
LET’S BEGIN BY DEFINING what makes a watch “vintage”. Opinions vary about how old a watch needs to be to qualify. Some think 20 years old puts a watch into the vintage category. I believe 30 is the correct number, although a younger watch model that has been discontinued could also qualify. Once the watch’s age hits the 50-year mark, it should be considered antique. When a watch enthusiast decides to explore the vintage market, then the fun begins. There are a wealth of vintage watch sellers, whether on the internet or brick and mortar stores. Many stores also list their items on the internet. World Class Watches has their inventory listed on the website, WCWtimpieces.com. There are many decisions to make in identifying which vintage watch is of most interest to the buyer. Is the watch brand an important aspect, or is the date of manufacture of the piece more important? Many vintage watch collectors want a watch manufactured during their birth year. Unfortunately for me, a watch made during my birth year makes it an antique!

One’s budget is obviously important. Many collectors may see a watch that appeals to them and if the price is within budget, it becomes a purchase. Many are looking for a specific brand and model that falls within a certain price range based upon the research they have done online and in person at watch stores. Aside from these parameters, the condition of the timepiece is paramount. Is it in original condition with its original paperwork? Has the dial been refinished or the watch casing been heavily polished? These last two items are very difficult to determine looking at photos on the internet. The online seller must be trusted to give a true description of the watch. Many respectable sellers have a generous return policy if the timepiece isn’t acceptable.
STYLE
Vintage Omega Crown
Is there any information about the service history? This is rare unless it has been serviced by the seller or there is paperwork from the brands’ service center. A very important aspect of vintage watch buying is whether there are spare parts still available, and how expensive they are to purchase. I have found that many vintage watch movements, while extremely high quality, have one or two design flaws which require parts to be replaced. In many cases watch repairers have exhausted the supply of the needed parts. The huge advantages World Class Watches has for vintage watch sales is not only the high level of expertise and the on-site watchmaker, but the fact that all timepieces we sell are serviced and warrantied by us.

STAYING HEALTHY IN THE WINTER Anya Sebastian
Winter officially begins on December 21st and continues through March 20th, 2021. With days becoming shorter, nights becoming longer and the weather very much colder, it is tempting to eat too much, exercise too little and spend far too much time curled up on the couch. But this is the time of year when taking care of your health is particularly important, especially now, in the current circumstances. The good news is that small things can make a big difference, and with that in mind, here are a few suggestions to help you on your way. FOCUSING ON BOOSTING YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM seems like an obvious place to start and, as the saying goes, ‘you are what you eat.’ Foods known to be especially beneficial for this purpose include mushrooms, broccoli, spinach, garlic, citrus fruits and, fortunately for us, chile! If keeping track is too demanding, juicing a mixture of fruits and vegetables is another option that works well.
AS WE ALL KNOW, KEEPING ACTIVE is an important part of staying healthy and that can be a challenge in the winter time. Working out at home, with the assistance of online videos, or special equipment, is one way to keep your body moving, or just bundle up and take a walk around the block.
THE COLD WINTER MONTHS CAN WREAK HAVOC WITH YOUR SKIN, too, leaving it dry and flaky and badly in need of moisture. Drinking water—lots of water—is essential, as is a really effective moisturizer. One of the very best is the Body Serum from K&K Skin Products. Check out our cover story on page 16.
SUPPLEMENTS can help too, and Hemp Apotheke stocks an entire line of medicinal mushroom products that are particularly effective for a number of things, including boosting the immune system. Owner, Gyana Basse, and her team of experts will gladly help you decide which ones would be best for you. Read about their products on page 18.
SINCE LYMPH is the home of the immune system, you may want to consider a lymphatic cleanse. Margo Covington is an experienced practitioner in that field and has helped many people recover from seriously debilitating issues. See her Expert Advice column on page 20.

LAST, BUT NOT LEAST, SINCE WINTER IS ALSO COLD AND FLU SEASON, Aspen Medical Center reminds us that it’s important to get adequate sleep, take regular exercise, eat a balanced diet, find healthy ways to control stress and, of course, follow the guidelines for keeping yourself, those around you, and the entire community, safe. important than ever to protect yourself, your family, and your community from these contagious diseases. Here are some ways to protect yourself: • Get a flu shot. We have flu shots at Aspen. Annual influenza vaccine is recommended for everyone age 6 months and older who does not have contraindications. This will decrease your chances of getting the flu.
INFLUENZA SEASON OR “FLU SEASON” in the northern hemisphere can start as early as October. It usually peaks in January or February and can last as late as May. This year, 2020-2021, as flu season is upon us, we also continue to experience the global coronavirus pandemic. The novel coronavirus causes an illness we call COVID-19 or just “Covid” for short.
• Wash hands frequently and do not touch your eyes, nose, or mouth.
The flu and COVID-19 are similar. Both illnesses are caused by respiratory viruses. Both can cause fever, chills, fatigue, muscle aches, headache, congestion, cough, and nausea. Other possible symptoms of either illness include sore throat, vomiting, and diarrhea. COVID-19 can also cause a loss of smell or taste or shortness of breath. The flu might also cause sweats and a loss of appetite.
• Follow these and other guidelines from the CDC and the New Mexico Department of Health.
As one can see, there is a lot of overlap and similarity in the symptoms caused by these two distinct illnesses. This flu season we will likely have both influenza and COVID-19 circulating simultaneously. It might even be possible to become ill with both viruses at the same time. It is more
• Wear a face mask and practice social distancing (stay at least 6 feet away from other people). • Avoid non-essential travel. • If you feel sick, seek medical care in a timely manner.
If you feel sick, and are concerned you may have the flu and/or the coronavirus, call your doctor. You can also call Aspen at 505-466-5885 in Santa Fe or 505747-6939 in Espanola. We have the ability to do rapid testing for both the flu and COVID-19. If your rapid test for COVID-19 is positive, it is considered the final answer. If your rapid test for COVID-19 is negative, we will do a backup PCR test to confirm the results. If you have the flu, there are FDAapproved treatments that can be prescribed to help you get better quicker.
HEALTH & WELLNESS
If you have COVID-19, there are currently no FDA-approved treatments but many therapies are currently being investigated. There is also currently no vaccine for COVID-19 but researchers from many different organizations around the world are working feverishly to try to develop a vaccine. There is hope that there may be a vaccine available before the end of the flu season. If you contract one of these illnesses, whether you have the flu or coronavirus, it is important to drink plenty of fluids, rest, and treat your symptoms. And in a worse case scenario, as per the CDC website, if you have trouble breathing, persistent pain or pressure in the chest, new confusion, inability to stay awake, or bluish lips or face, call 911 and go immediately to the ER. As always, even during flu season and the current pandemic, Aspen is here for you. We are doing telemedicine as well as inperson visits. We also have rapid flu tests and rapid COVID-19 tests. K&K SKIN PRODUCTS
A Revolution in the World of Cosmetics Anya Sebastian
It was clearly a partnership that was meant to be. Two sisters-in-law, one a research scientist and one an artisan specializing in blending natural oils for skincare, came together to combine art and science in a revolutionary new line of skincare products.
DR. KRISTINA TRUJILLO, WHO SPENT OVER A DECADE as a biochemistry professor at the University of New Mexico, had come across a molecule that was to change her life. Similar to resveratrol, an ingredient derived from red grapes and often found in high end, anti-aging products, this molecule was even more powerful, with six times more anti-oxidant properties and ten times more anti-inflammatory properties than resveratrol itself. Dr. Trujillo immediately recognized this as an exciting breakthrough; the challenge was how best to maximize its potential. The answer came when Dr. Trujillo’s sister-in-law, Katie, invited her to come and help with the line of skincare products she was putting together. Based on years of research and experimentation, Katie had created different oil blends that had successfully cured her own skin conditions. That is when Dr. Kristina really began to understand and appreciate the scientifically proven properties of these oils. They could be anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-

inflammatory, anti-oxidant, calming, energizing, healing... and that is when an idea suddenly occurred to her. What might happen if Katie’s products were to be combined with the molecule she was so excited about? The rest, as they say, is history. After extensive research and impressive results obtained from well over 100 volunteers, it was abundantly evident that this revolutionary skincare product worked to dramatically reduce the appearance of wrinkles, stretch marks and scars. It even had a visible impact on psoriasis, eczema and rosacea. Just one product, the BioVer-X Anti-Aging Wrinkle Serum, contains the molecule, for which a cosmetic patent is currently pending. Produced in a certified organic facility in Taos, it does not have any harsh preservatives. “Most cosmetic products are water-based,” explains Kristina, “and since water goes rancid over
COVER STORY
time, they need harsh, artificial preservatives to extend their shelf life. Our products are oil-based, with natural preservatives like vitamin E, and have a shelf life of around three years.” Good news spreads fast and estheticians and spas are now incorporating BioVer-X into their treatments, along with acupuncturists specializing in acupuncture face lifts. Hollywood is on board as well; the company’s products were among those selected to be given to celebrities at the 2020 Oscars and Sundance Film Festival EcoLuxe Lounge, both held early this year. Fortunate timing, for sure, especially as BioVer-X is available through the K&K website, so it can safely be obtained without leaving home. Or order over the phone and speak directly with Katie. It is worth noting that, before K&K came along, resveratrol (the ingredient BioVer-X is derived from) was considered one of the most potent antioxidants on the market. Luxury skincare companies regularly charge up to $500 for products containing resveratrol. Given that BioVer-X is both substantially more potent and substantially less expensive, New Mexico may soon have the distinction of being recognized as the birthplace of the next revolution in the world of cosmetics. The K&K line currently consists of five unique products and, with winter fast approaching, the Body Serum is another good investment. “Harsh winter air can draw moisture out of the skin, leaving it dry and flaky”, explains Katie. “Creams and lotions really don’t help, since they just sit on top of the skin and don’t penetrate.” The Body Serum, however, does. Consisting of a combination of several premium carrier and essential oils, it is best applied on wet skin, replicating the skin’s natural oil barrier and sealing in the water, leaving the skin hydrated, silky and soft. Strong enough to heal dry skin, and gentle enough for baby skin, the Body Serum can also be used for shaving, which makes it effective for the entire family, as well as a great gift. Anyone ordering products from the K&K website, is invited to take advantage of a special 20% discount holiday offer, effective through January 2021. Simply type in the code holiday20 when placing your order. And exciting news! Kristina and Katie will be interviewed by world-famous supermodel, Kathy Ireland, for her show “Modern Living with kathy ireland®” to be aired on WE tv in December. Check the website for further updates.

THE MARKET FOR CBD HAS EXPLODED, big time. Walk into any grocery store, drug store, or even convenience store and you are likely to find a whole variety of CBD-infused products, from shampoos to cereals, beverages and lotions. The fact that corporate retailers and big box stores are heavily invested in promoting and making the most of the CBD boom, may appear to be a good thing, because many people still confuse CBD with THC and making it more familiar makes it more acceptable.
FINDING YOUR OWN HEALING WITH
There is, however, a downside, because the commercialization of CBD—presenting it primarily as a one-size-fits-all recreational product—diverts attention away from the fact that all CBD is NOT created equal and education is required in order to benefit from its powerful health and well-being properties. While there is still much to be learned about this relatively new field of research, results already obtained from scientific studies are really exciting, especially as these are natural products without the sideeffects typically associated with prescription drugs. “Unfortunately, there is very little out there by way of education,” says Gyana Basse, the owner of Hemp Apotheke, the award-winning Santa Fe store specializing in pure, high quality CBD products. “Most people are looking for information and advice on how to deal with their specific issues and we always make a point of assessing their individual circumstances and concerns. That’s important, because there is no magic bullet. CBD comes in different forms and different concentrations and people also respond differently, so a combination may be required, in order to be effective.” The times we are living in are quite unprecedented and heightened stress levels, together with sleep problems, are inevitably among the most common issues people are facing right now. Instead of considering these in isolation, Basse and her team of experts take a holistic approach, because products work on a cellular level, instead of focusing on just superficial symptoms. What kind of life circumstances/home/work environments are people dealing with? What do they eat, think about, feel? Do they exercise, take time for themselves?

“It’s so easy to fall into a place of feeling helpless,” says Basse, “and helplessness can lead into depression, which makes the situation even worse. Now that we’re spending so much more time at home, this is a real opportunity to be proactive rather than reactive and open up to the idea of taking a lead in our self-care. We can start small, because even small choices we make can shift our attitude in a more positive direction.”

WHAT SANTA FE IS SAYING...
I have been under extreme stress at work. After a number of referrals, I finally made it to Hemp Apotheke. I have been doing a very small amount of broad Our 3 spectrum CBD and have noticed a year-old daughter big difference—I am much more was diagnosed with relaxed and it has alleviated attention deficit disorder. She was my stress headaches. having trouble forming sentences Joanie and experienced anxiety so severe, it was keeping her up at night. We began using Hemp Apotheke’s CBD isolate about I am a nurse a month ago and have already seen huge who hasn’t been changes! Hemp Apotheke offers a wide range of products that can help to ease stress, alleviate sleep problems, increase energy, boost the immune system, aid relaxation and purify the environment. In addition to CBD tinctures and essential oils, they include powerful medicinal mushroom supplements, teas, coffee, chocolates, gummies, bath bombs, pet treats and air purifiers, all at the best prices in town. Also included is a range of locally-made, organic, CBD-infused skincare products. Basse says she is especially concerned about parents and kids right now, because, as she points out, “They are really having some of the hardest time adapting to these unreal and unnatural circumstances and it’s the parents who are having to hold it all together. Caring for the care-givers will create a higher quality of life for everyone, because they will then have the energy to pass it on to others.” Judging by the testimonials she receives, Basse is definitely onto something. Since it is considered an essential business, Hemp Apotheke will definitely be open throughout the winter. The website is currently being updated, so that items can be ordered online, with phone consultations available, if required. Curbside pickup is also an option. Expert ADVICE
MARGO COVINGTON Owner
Body Cleanse Lymph Release 521 Franklin Avenue Santa Fe 505.982.0044 BodyCleanseLymphRelease.com
AS WE HEAD INTO THE COLDER MONTHS, also known as “flu season”, the complications in our lives from COVID-19 add even more stressors. Stress and the way you handle it is important. If you’re emotionally in trouble, your body is in trouble as well. There are tools that can not only help you feel better, but actually move the lymph in ways that will support you and your immune system. WHY IS THAT IMPORTANT? 1. Lymph is the home of your immune system. 2. As part of the circulatory system, the lymph is watery, and hydration helps lymph move better. 3. Emotions are influenced by our mind’s interpretation of what is happening. Scientists have correlated emotions and sound, and emotions and water’s flows and shapes. (See the groundbreaking work of Japanese researcher, Masaru Emoto.) Given that our bodies are mostly water, understanding these correlations helps us understand the flow of lymph in the body. 4. Lymph seems to decongest and flow more rapidly through your immune
STRESS, IMMUNITY AND LYMPH
system when you focus on a coherent emotion, notably gratitude, while we are working. Your lymph seems to decongest, gurgle and move better. 5. Also, paradoxically, when clients fall asleep in a session, their lymph seems to flow better.
Scientists have correlated emotions and water’s flows and shapes as found in the groundbreaking work of Japanese researcher, Masaru Emoto.
WHAT CAN YOU DO? 1. First, notice what emotions you’re feeling, whether they are comfortable or uncomfortable. 2. Then, process your challenging emotions of anger, fear, frustration, and hopelessness, in a way that does not hurt another. Discharge those challenging emotions. For example, you can yell into and/or pound on a pillow. Tell someone who can give you good attention. Journal—write it down. Shake it off. Do physical exercise. Plan to get it out in some healthy way that works for you.
3. When you wind down, see if you can find a coherent emotion you can land on: Gratitude, Appreciation, Care and Compassion…if only compassion for yourself feeling so stressed. 4. Then notice how your body begins to change, and calm down, maybe even gurgle more…and appreciate that you can insist on feeling better. Notice and appreciate the subtle; the nuanced, as you process your emotions from sympathetic to parasympathetic responses. (From “fight, flight or freeze” to “rest, digest, and heal.”) There are many scientists and doctors whose work I’ve studied, who provide their peer-reviewed findings to substantiate what my clients and I have experienced and observed, particularly how focusing on positive feelings can support a healthier lymphatic system, hence healthier immune function. Little did I know, 16 years ago, that this work would become my passion. I recently realized that all the varied careers and experiences in my life seem to have uniquely prepared me for this work at this time.
“I began seeing Margo Covington for assistance with heavy metal detox. She is an extremely knowledgeable and skillful practitioner, and the healing that took place went far beyond the physical. I felt a a deep sense of caring and support from Margo in our work together.” Dr. JoAnne Dodgson, Taos, NM Margo’s headshot by Bette Ridgeway

THE ARTS
SPOTLIGHT on the Santa Fe Art Scene By Emily Van Cleve
Santa Fe began developing an art colony in the early years of the 20th century when artists from around the country were drawn to northern New Mexico’s captivating landscape.
ALEXANDRA ELDRIDGE
Not only were these talented artists, many of whom had reputations in East Coast cities including New York and Chicago, interested in painting the natural world around them but also the people they encountered up and down the Rio Grande Valley. As time went on, artists working in less traditional artistic styles settled in Santa Fe. A lively Modernist movement that incorporated elements of Cubist and Abstract art began thriving. Today, the art expressed by Santa Fe artists is as varied as can be found in any large city in the country. Alexandra Eldridge, whose work is represented by G2 Gallery at 702 1/2 Canyon Road, is a Santa Fe artist interested in communicating her private dreaming life through her work. Symbolism plays an important role in paintings. “Symbols are the language of the soul,” Eldridge explains. “Through symbols our imagination is stimulated.” Animals are featured prominently in Eldridge’s work. They can be seen in her photo-based paintings, which are created after scanning glass plate negatives from the late 1800’s, and in her mixed media paintings. Eldridge enjoys exploring the connection she feels between humans and animals. Many of her images include birds.
TRUE WEST GALLERY
“I see birds as messengers from other realms,” she adds. “They bear witness to life from their vantage point high in trees.” To see a wide variety of artistic styles and media created by Southwestern artists, check out the work featured at True West (130 Lincoln Ave.). This mainstay in the downtown area offers a large selection of Native American and Southwestern jewelry, pottery, weavings, paintings and sculpture. The gallery represents award-winning artists whose work is collected internationally. Although Santa Fe’s natural beauty initially brought artists from outside the state to town, artists have been coming to the area for many years because they feel the freedom to express themselves in a wide variety of ways. Diversity is what defines the Santa Fe art scene!

ALEXANDRA ELDRIDGE’S World of the Imagination By Anya Sebastian
WHEN ALEXANDRA ELDRIDGE WAS FIVE YEARS OLD, her kindergarten report card said simply, “Alexandra lives very much in her imagination.’ That was true then and it is still true now. “Wandering the inner worlds is where I feel most at home,” she says. “I’ve never felt completely here, or entirely of this world.” Her work as an artist defies branding, as is clearly evident to anyone visiting her studio in Santa Fe. Paintings, large and small, line the walls, together with re-imagined old photos, ancient Chinese scrolls and mixed media works. A sculpted deer, and a couple of adorned antique dresses, are displayed on stands. The result is a collection so unique and different, the variety so extraordinary and diverse, it’s hard to believe that everything was created by the same person.
22
FineLifestyles SANTA FE & ALBUQUERQUE
But the one characteristic common to all Alexandra’s artwork, is that it disrupts the conventional, leading the observer to explore inner worlds of the imagination, marked by symbolism and metaphysical thinking. Here, art, life and psyche intertwine, and all engage simultaneously. Although inspired by her own personal life journey, Alexandra tries to avoid telling people how to interpret her paintings, or what they mean. “I’d rather let everyone work that out for themselves,” she explains. “What people see in my art, and how they respond, is always very personal and seldom the same and I much prefer it that way.” It is clear, from her work, that she believes everything to be connected. The different forms of creation—animal, vegetable

and mineral—are one; they interact, affect each other and are all part of the universal whole, as are body, mind and spirit. That is particularly evident in the images for Alexandra’s latest project, a series of eye-catching illustrations for The Radiant Tarot, Pathway to Creativity, a tarot deck and book, to be published in the fall of 2021. The Emperor is depicted as a stag, a symbol of majesty and authority; two swans, sacred to Venus, the goddess of love, and famous for mating for life, are the Lovers, and growing out of the skulls in the Death card is a trumpet-shaped lily, heralding rebirth and life after death. “The tarot cards are intended to be used as creative prompts to ignite the imagination and stimulate creative thinking,” she says. The paintings, all 78 of them, have been reproduced as giclée prints, now available for sale through her website, www.alexandraeldridge.com Alexandra Eldridge’s art has been featured in many shows, in cities both throughout the United States and overseas, including Paris, London, Belgrade, New York and San Francisco, among others. Her work is currently on display at G2 Gallery, 702½ Canyon Rd, Gypsy Alley, Santa Fe. She also shows in Telluride, Scottsdale, New Orleans and Park City, UT and is included in many public and private collections, including those of William Hurt, Steve Buscemi and Edie Falco. IN MEMORIAM By Anya Sebastian
MARTIN (MARTY) HOROWITZ, artist, sculptor, innovator and founder of Goldleaf Framemakers, left this world much too soon, on July 2nd. at the age of 70. Born in Brooklyn, he graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York City, where he began his frame-making career in 1969. But it was in Santa Fe, where he landed in 1988, that he established and built the golden empire that still endures to this day. A master gilder, he created a method of manufacturing hand-carved, period-style picture frames, that brought the ancient art into the modern world and at the same time brought him widespread acclaim in the art world, both near and far. A pioneering and gifted artist, he had a natural affinity with gold and an instinctive understanding of its power to give objects a new identity. He even transformed weapons of war, like AK47s and hand grenades, into works of art completely devoid of their dark energy and deadly intent. Marty was an original; a charismatic, multi-talented, larger than life, unique individual. He was a devoted father, an outrageous flirt, a Harley Davidson enthusiast, an accomplished dancer and a loyal and generous friend with a heart of gold. A great storyteller, he laughed, swore and drank with equal abandon and drew a wide circle of friends of all ages and backgrounds. Marty Horowitz lived life to the fullest and in addition to his rich, artistic legacy, he leaves a trove of treasured memories for those of us who were fortunate enough to have known this wonderful, exceptional human being. He is, and will continue to be, sorely missed.

BOOK REVIEW By Wolf Schneider
HIT LIST UPSCALE THRILLER SHOWS OFF SANTA FE SETTINGS THE WRY, SUAVE SOMETIMES-ATTORNEY STONE BARRINGTON pilots his own jet. He owns a lavish townhouse in Manhattan, a sprawling country estate in England, and a coastal getaway in Maine. He pals around with the New York City police commissioner, who gives him a lift up Third Avenue in his armored SUV. When alone, Stone is driven around Manhattan in his own armored Bentley by his factotum Fred, who generally packs a weapon. When Stone visits Santa Fe—arriving of course by private jet into Santa Fe Airport—he stays at his colleague Ed Eagle’s house in Tesuque. There, a houseman relieves Stone of his luggage, and dinner consists of a grilled porterhouse served with a rare California cabernet like a Screaming Eagle. “We had two murders and one attempt today. That sort of takes it out of you,” is Stone’s brand of dinner conversation.

You get the idea. The unflappable Stone lives the high life. Some might think that Stone, who is the hero of a bestselling thriller franchise, is an alter ego for Woods himself. The prolific novelist has written more than 75 mysteries. He flies his own jet. He lives mostly in Florida and Maine, but has at times called Santa Fe home, too. In Hit List, the novelist shows off his Santa Fe savvy, setting scenes at the Tesuque Village Market, Ten Thousand Waves, and a guest house where Stone dozes off to yipping coyotes. The plot? Stone finds his name on a mysterious hit list and escapes from Manhattan to England, Maine, and Santa Fe to shake off his wannabe assailant, who has an uncanny knack for showing up wherever Stone does. It’s a fast, suspenseful ride through fabulous locations peppered with snappy dialogue and selfassured plotting. You won’t be able to put it down.

HOLIDAY WINE PAIRINGS WHAT A YEAR IT HAS BEEN! And if you have coped with the days’ events by drinking more wine and more often, you are not alone! I often get asked, “What are some good wines that I can pair with my holiday meal?” Well, the answer is, “It depends on what you are eating.” So I thought I would provide some wine pairing ideas for the holidays using turkey, beef and lamb as the main course. No meal is complete without some enticing hors d’oeuvres. And no hors d’oeuvre is complete without sparkling wine. I have talked often about sparkling wine, and whether your preference is for the French version, Champagne, the Spanish version, Cava, or the Italian version, Prosecco, you can’t go wrong. Feeling in a French mood? Try the Perrier Jouet Grand Brut which is a very good Champagne and represents extremely good value. Or if you want to step up your game, try the Ruinart Blanc de Blanc or Rose. Ruinart is the oldest Champagne house in the world and their wines are beautifully crafted and just plain delicious. Feeling in an Italian mood? Try the Ferghettina, Franciacorta Brut Rose from Lombardy. An outstanding wine. Feel like breaking out your castanets that you have had hidden away in your closet all these years?. Pop the cork on a bottle of Segura Viudas, Heredad Reserva, a delicious Cava from Catalonia, Spain.

For your next course why not have a white wine? If you want to honor the Stars and Stripes, try the Rochioli, Sauvignon Blanc, Russian River Valley, or the Ramey, Chardonnay, Russian River Valley. As an Italian wine alternative try the Frescobaldi Pomino Riserva Benefizio, Chardonnay from Tuscany or the Catarratto Graci, Carricante, Etna Bianco from Mount Etna in Sicily.. If turkey is your main course choice, I would suggest a Pinot Noir. Try the Paul Hobbs, Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley or if you want something really special the Kosta Browne, Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley. For a white wine that’s a bit different, try Bodegas Henri Lurton, Chenin Blanc, Valle de Guadalupe. If beef is your thing, go with Frank Family, ‘Rutherford Reserve’, Napa Valley, for a Cabernet Sauvignon, Fontannafreda Serrralunga d’Alba Barolo, Piedmont or Mas Alta, ‘La Basseta’, Priorat, which is a glorious Garnacha/Syrah blend. Finally, if you are having lamb you really want a tannic, full bodied red wine. Try Spottswoode, ‘Lyndenhurst’, Napa Valley if you want a Cabernet Sauvignon; the sublime Antinori, ‘Guado al Tasso’, Bolgheri for a Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc/Merlot blend; the Tenuta delle Terre Nere, ‘Calderara Sottana’, Etna Rosso, Sicily for your Nerello Mascalese fix, or Bodega Numanthia, Toro, for an amazing Tempranillo, from Spain. Desert anyone? Lots of options here but keep it simple and try a Moscato from Piedmont, Italy. These wines, while adored throughout Italy, do not yet have the following here in the USA that they deserve. They are inexpensive and always a showstopper. Two Moscatos that you can’t go wrong with are the Tintero, Moscato d’Asti, ‘Sori Gramella’, or the Vietti, Moscato d’Asti, ‘Cascinetta’. Above all, this author would like to wish you and your family the happiest and healthiest of holidays..

“When I was little, I would go with my mother to the local abarrote, or specialty store to buy dried salt cod, olives, capers, parsley and sweet almonds. She would prepare a huge amount of bacalao before Christmas Eve. When friends would come to visit between Christmas and New Year, we would all eat bacalao. Like many Mexican dishes, when bacalao is reheated, the flavors get better. At the end of that week on January 1 was the end of the bacalao and the best flavor,” he says.
CHEF CRISTIAN PONTIGGIA’S FAVORITE HOLIDAY DRINK IS THE BOMBARDINO, AND IT’S PERFECT FOR A COLD EVENING.
In a small saucepan, add 5 ounces of Zabaglione liqueur, an Italian aperitif made with cream, amaretto, egg yolks and sugar. A high-quality eggnog makes a good substitute. Add some good brandy. Heat on low until the mixture is warm, but do not let it a boil. Pour into your favorite mug and top with whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon to complete this festive afterdinner treat that really takes away those winter chills.

One of the reasons I love being the Wine Director is that we both share similar palates when it comes to wine. Chef believes, as I do, that Burgundies are a perfect wine to pair with holiday meals. A great French pinot noir or chardonnay and roasted turkey are a perfect match. Our extensive list here at the Compound now has 400 bottles to choose from to fit the bill with any holiday meal.

This very tender fish comes from the cool waters off the coast of Chile. Like many other white fish, Chilean sea bass is a low-calorie, protein-dense fish. Chef Estrada likes to finish the plate with Mussels, Clams, Risotto, Rainbow Churd and Saffron Beurre Blank. The combination of flavors is a joy to the palate!

EXPERIENCE AUTHENTIC MEXICO IN SANTA FE OR AT HOME By Kelly Koepke
SIMPLY SERVING GOOD FOOD won’t rank a restaurant 12th on the Trip Advisor Travelers Choice Award list of the 100 best restaurants in the country. Equally important is the experience. The trifecta of cuisine, ambience and authenticity has earned Sazón its place for its world-class and award-winning taste of Mexico. The select menu at Sazón features customer favorites like Gulf shrimp in a light crispy batter, and Chef Fernando Olea’s interpretation of classic Chile en Nogada - a chile poblano stuffed with a mixture of meats, nuts and dried fruits. This fall, halibut will be a frequent special, as well as other seasonal additions, as Chef’s way to showcase Sazón’s signature salsas and moles.
32
FineLifestyles SANTA FE & ALBUQUERQUE
And now, diners can experience Chef Olea’s palate-pleasing moles at home, too. Available through the Sazón website for local pickup or shipping direct to your door, guest favorite moles featuring traditional and exotic flavor combinations are ready to complement meat or vegetarian entrees. If you would like, pick up your favorite mole at the restaurant after dining. A selection of Sazón moles makes a simple snack or appetizer something special, as well. When speaking of ambience, diners adore the colorful paintings from three world-class Mexican artists whose works rotate in and out of the restaurant as collectors snap up new additions. Co-owner Susanna Becerra designed the warm, comfortable

interior to critical accolades. She continues to introduce paintings by Tanya Talamante, Fragoso Maiz and Julio de Rita to the space, both from the collection she and husband Lawrence own, and for sale to those with a discerning eye. To warm away the autumn chill when dining in the restaurant, Sazón features two cocktails: La Piña and El Caballero. La Piña is a citrusy sweet and spicy pineapple sangrita made with reposado tequila and Licor 43. El Caballero (the cowboy) is an añejo mezcal Old Fashioned created with La Fogata Añejo for its rich notes of wood and earth, as well as the traditional smokey flavors of an aged mezcal. What better way to enjoy these libations, or any of your favorite mescals and tequilas at home, than in an exclusive-to-Sazón set of glassware? Sazón collaborated with renowned local glass blower David Shanfeld of Tesuque Glassworks to design a line of tequila glasses elegantly rimmed with gold. Choose from a set of Atzin glasses designed specifically to enhance the tequila and mezcal experience in their three forms - blanco, reposado and anejo. Either is available to purchase as a gift for oneself or others. What a stocking stuffer! Great food, great service and great ambience. Award-winning Sazón has them all, and now you can bring a little bit of them to your home, too. Sazón 221 Shelby St., SantaFe 505.983.8604 SazonSantaFe.com

Dine In or Take Home A Taste of Italy
By Kelly Koepke
OUR PALATES CRAVE DIFFERENT FLAVORS when fall’s crisp evenings turn to winter’s chill. Sassella, Santa Fe’s premier Italian fine dining destination, knows exactly how to please our taste buds – whether dining at the restaurant or at home. Already a hit with guests, the recently introduced 32-ounce Italian T-bone steak is sliced and simply dressed with sea salt and olive oil for two to share. New for winter is the fun, interactive zigoiner beef skewer cooked over dripping-rich potatoes. This regional dish hails from Executive Chef and co-owner Cristian Pontiggia’s home town of Sassella. The same designer of Sassella’s unique gin and amaro tasting boards crafted the special zigoiner dowels and platters. Something sure to warm you down to your toes this fall is the Bombardino, a cocktail traditionally served après ski. This creamy drink combines luscious house made brandied zabaglione liqueur with Gran Duque d’Alba brandy, topped with whipped cream and cinnamon. The regular Saturday gin and amaro tastings, which include hand sliced charcuterie and cheeses, the perfect way to wile away post-

hike or slopes afternoons, too. Six new amaros join the already extensive list of 20 herbal Italian digestifs. More than threescore gins from around the world include the innovative Hapusa from India’s Himalaya mountains. The restaurant’s Italian wine selections have also expanded with delicious offerings from Sicilian banker turned vintner Alberto Graci. His latest label, IDDA, is a partnership with Angelo Gaja of Piemonte fame. These wines are like drinking fine burgundy or barolo at one third the price. Following the European tradition of fine restaurants having an associated shop for prepared foods, The Deli at Sassella is now open on McKenzie Street behind the restaurant. Decorated by Sassella co-owner Suzanna Becerra with the same sophistication as the restaurant, The Deli purveys imported Italian meats, cheeses and specialty goods like capers, olives, and Sassella’s private label olive oil. Chef Cristian’s fame in Italy means Sassella sources product not found elsewhere in New Mexico. Complementing these imports, The Deli offers daily baked breads, fresh ricotta, mozzarella and burrata cheeses, soups and sauces, and ready-to-eat dishes like lasagna, meatballs and panini sandwiches. Dessert? Certo! House made sorbettos, gelatos and “Santa Fe-mous” lemon mousse cannoli are also available. The Deli is sure to fill many holiday requests for customer favorite Affetatti Misti platter - an elegant appetizer for few or many. Sassella’s catering, both regular menu items and custom creations, are the perfect way to savor the authentic flavors of Italy at home with impressed family and friends, too. All selections are available through the restaurant’s website, as well. “There will always be certain classics there, and as the weather changes, we change the wines by the bottle and glass to reflect the bolder flavors of the food for fall and winter,” he continues. “And we’re introducing some wines we’ve gotten to know through tastings and through friends.” For the fall and winter holidays, Kiffin assures that guests will receive the regular, elevated experience they always have at the restaurant, only kicked up yet another notch. SANTA FE FAVORITE, MIDTOWN BISTRO, has been delighting locals and tourists alike since 2013. Helmed by long-time Santa Feans, Executive Chef Angel Estrada and General Manager Edmund Catanach, the restaurant is one of the finest restaurants in town. It is highly regarded for its mouth-watering lunches and dinners, as well as its scrumptious Sunday brunch. The menu is a showcase for seasonal dishes and Chef Estrada makes everything from scratch, using farm fresh ingredients and locally-sourced products. Midtown Bistro is fortunate to have a lovely, spacious patio, as it has been a saving grace for the restaurant during this past summer and into the mild fall months. With cooler weather ahead, there are heat lamps to help diners stay warm, if they feel more comfortable dining al fresco. Now that the holidays are around the corner, Catanach encourages folks to plan ahead and reserve early, especially with the current capacity mandates. “Be proactive,” he says, “and please don’t wait till the day of, as we want to make sure to accommodate you during this special time of the year.” The restaurant will offer its traditional Thanksgiving meal with turkey and all the trimmings—cranberries, yams, mashed potatoes and green beans—plus pumpkin pie, of course! Seasonal specialties also include elk tenderloin and Chilean sea bass, harvest veggies, and the Bistro’s ever-popular toffee cake, along with the restaurant’s other notable favorites. “We are very grateful to our loyal following,” comments Catanach, “because like all restaurants, we are fighting for our survival, and hoping for a new horizon.” He adds, “We appreciate and depend on the continued support and patience of the community, as these are such difficult times for everyone.” Midtown Bistro 901 W. EL NIDO
Comfort During the Holiday Season By Kelly Koepke
Wood Roasted UHU with Farmers Vegetables
WITH THE FIRST WINTER FLURRIES SURPRISING US in October, our thoughts naturally turn to places of warmth. Where we can eat and drink the bounty of the harvest in an atmosphere of comfort and celebration. That’s what El Nido offers to locals and visitors alike this fall, winter and holiday season. The restaurant takes its namesake from the Spanish, meaning “The Nest”, with the same nurturing connotations – the elegant, open dining rooms feature three crackling fireplaces. And how can you not find respite from both physical and psychic storms with a new fall menu that features rich, hearty signature dishes that bring together the best of the harvest? El Nido’s wood-fired philosophy of cooking, tended to perfection by Chef Ka’ainoa Ravey, showcases diverse choices. Earthy oyster mushrooms and a truffled corn sauce complement the scallop

and corn fritters appetizer. Entrees include a delicate uhu fish with wood oven roasted farmers vegetables and chorizo; rump of lamb in a curried butter bean and tomato stew; and a black garlic rubbed Black Angus porterhouse served with horseradish mashed potatoes, beet puree and confit carrots. Can you say mouth-watering comfort food? A favorite holiday choice of Chef Ka’ai’s is the horseradish and rosemary salt-crusted prime rib served with tender roasted carrots and fingerling potatoes. Slow roasted over pecan wood, this is sure to become a customer favorite, too. Chef Ka’ai’s fire-forward menu takes the rustic, old-world cooking techniques of grilling, smoking and using the heat of coals to prepare just about everything at the Tesuque restaurant. That includes the Thanksgiving menu, featuring

a 12-hour smoked turkey and a pineapple glazed rotisserie ham, in addition to a rump of lamb. In a nod to Chef’s Hawaiian heritage, a whole opakapaka fish will be served as well. You might be tempted to make a meal of the jumbo lump crab cakes, but definitely leave room for desserts like pumpkin cheesecake or a smokey cast iron apple crisp cooked over the coals a la mode with coconut gelato. El Nido plans special, unique Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve prix fixe menus, as well, to take away the stress of holiday meal planning. And they’ll be ringing in 2021 at midnight New York time on December 31 with a champagne toast. All holiday seatings, which begin at lunch and run through dinner, feature capacity limits. They will sell out, too, so make your reservations now. Everyone at El Nido invites the community to enjoy the spacious dining rooms, despite any weather concerns. The restaurant was also one of the first fine dining establishments to become New Mexico Safe Certified, a program to ensure the comfort and hygiene of staff and visitors.

Santa Fe County Residential Market Report
Third Quarter 2020
Based on Information from Santa Fe Association of Realtors MLS for the period (SEP 2019) through (SEP 2020). This representation is based in whole or in part on data supplied by SFAR MLS. SFAR MLS does not guarantee nor is in any way responsible for its accuracy. Data maintained by SFAR MLS may not reflect all real estate activity in the market.
WARNING SIGNS Following the shock of stay at home orders and lockdowns in March throughout the country, we saw a virtual freeze (albeit short term) in offers, showing requests and listings coming to market. Curiously, our web traffic started rebounding rapidly in April and suddenly we doubled our annual traffic by May. What we did not know we were witnessing was the sudden rise of ‘Zoomtowns’, where more affordable and quality of life focused markets would be in high demand by the recently untethered remote worker.

LUXURY BOOM By far one of the most staggering numbers is the growth of luxury properties (1M+) that are currently under contract. The average price for a luxury property has grown by 7% over the same period, and based on the amount currently selling we expect that to continue to rise. Santa Fe County saw 3rd Quarter luxury solds up 34% over the same period last year.

Overall, the story of the Santa Fe real estate market for 2020 is of unprecedented demand: inventory is at an all-time low and buyers are in constant bidding wars. We are currently seeing more properties under contract than available for purchase, a trend that is pushing prices higher resulting in a historic high median price above $500k for a home in Santa Fe.

THE UPSHOT 2020 has proven to be the year of the unexpected and our real estate market is no exception. Where we feared a crash due to the pandemic, the opposite has proven true: sellers are enjoying competing offers and recordhigh prices, while buyers are needing to make quick decisions while also being patient. Typically the election would also play a factor by slowing the market down, but this is an atypical year and we do not expect these market conditions to change anytime soon. 530 S. SEE WHAT READERS ARE SAYING ABOUT
FINE LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE
I wanted to write and tell you how much I enjoyed your magazine which I received for the first time this week! I was thrilled to read about the real estate market changes over the last year, particularly since the Covid-19 hit here in March. I also discovered new restaurants to try, and two new places I want to shop that I wasn't previously aware of. I can't wait to check them out! I'm really looking forward to the next issue. Keep up the good work! —Deborah S.

ENJOY A SLICE OF
SWITZERLAND IN OURAY By Debbie Stone
Historical Ouray
IF YOU’RE CRAVING THE SWISS ALPS, but can’t travel across the pond, don’t despair. Just head to Ouray, Colorado to experience a “Little Switzerland.” And even if you might not hear any yodeling, the scenery alone will transport you to an alpine wonderland. Though tiny, with a population of only 1,000, this charming western town has a big reputation as an adventure playground. Nestled in a canyon at the base of the dramatic San Juan Mountains, Ouray’s jagged cliff walls and towering peaks offer opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts to hike, mountain bike, rock climb and more. If you’re a hiker, there are paths aplenty, with seventy-six trails available at the tip of your hiking pole. Both locals and visitors enjoy the Ouray Perimeter Trail, a popular six-mile, circular route, featuring a variety of terrain and offering an up-close look at the area’s geology.

One of the town’s main attractions is its waterfalls. Box Cañon, which is located in Box Canyon Falls Park, is regarded as Ouray’s own wonder of the world. The 85-foot waterfall plummets into a very narrow, granite chute and can be enjoyed from vantage points above and below. Opt to take the short hike to the suspension bridge that crosses the gorge for picture-perfect views. The canyon is a magnet for rock climbers, and in winter, an area of the gorge becomes an ice climbing paradise. Known as one of the top venues in the world to develop and perfect iceclimbing skills, the Ouray Ice Park is minutes from town, and even better, it’s free. Add Cascade Falls to your list of impressive sights. This multitiered cascade drops about forty feet from cliffs on the east side of town and is a visible scenic landmark in Ouray. A short, but steep walk leads to the waterfall from the parking lot. It’s a great place to cool off in the summer heat.
SPORTS, REC & TRAVEL
After a day of outdoor fun, relax those sore muscles with a soak in the Ouray Hot Springs Pool (socially-distanced measures are in place). You’ll be delighted to discover that Ouray County’s hot springs don’t have that pervasively strong, rotten egg odor found at many other springs. Thank the water’s mineral content and the local geology for this plus. Several lodges also have their own thermal baths on the premise for guests’ usage. After a heavenly soak, make your way to one of the breweries in town and enjoy an ice cold one. This is Colorado, the state known for perfecting the art of craft beer. For those who need a bit of retail therapy, the eclectic shops along Main Street sell everything from unique clothing and hand-crafted items to antiques and fine art. When your stomach rumbles, you’ll have your pick of numerous eateries, offering everything from burritos and pub grub to innovative, farm-to-table cuisine. And to satisfy your sweet tooth, make a beeline to beloved Mouse’s Chocolates! Just another reason to feel like you’re in Switzerland! History is alive and well in Ouray, as this is a town where the spirit of the Old West abounds. Many of the buildings and Victorianera homes date back to the late 1800s and are on the National Historic Register. Outside Ouray, you can tour a gold mine or explore one of the ghost towns in the San Juan Mountains.
