A WORD FROM THE

PUBLISHER

WINTER/EARLY SPRING 2021 Volume 6 Issue 4 DESIGN DeAnne Wood ART DEPARTMENT EDITOR Emily Van Cleve Emily@Finelifestylessw.com

With winter winding down and spring on the horizon, we long for warmer days to enjoy the many outdoor activities New Mexico has to offer. Given what we have been through during the majority of 2020, many of us are looking forward to spending more time outdoors whether it be biking, hiking or just enjoying a meal at our favorite restaurant. It would seem, from early indications, that the vaccines are effective and people are wearing their masks and social distancing leading to lower COVID cases and hospitalizations. With that in mind, restaurants are open for indoor dining again and need our support. Many have installed completely new ventilation systems and continue to train their staffs on the proper COVID protocals to keep everyone safe. Many chefs have spent the down time creating new dishes. Also in this issue, is a very informative real estate market update on the red-hot housing market from Barker|Christies International. If you are ready to put your home on the market, now is the time with low inventory levels.

THE STATE OF

I always ask, “What has happened to the American fashion style to go from this…to this”?

FASHION Look how beautiful people dressed in the past. Something has gone wrong over the years and the pandemic has only made it worse! During the pandemic, our sense of fashion has not been a priority and it shows. Can you imagine what people would think 25 years from now looking at the above “Then and Now” fashion photo. Over the years, we have gone from wearing suits and fine dress clothing to t-shirts, pajama bottoms and slippers! The last 12 months have not been easy and caught many of us by surprise. We haven’t been able to go out to eat at our favorite restaurants or go to museums, theatres or movies. Many businesses have asked employees to work from home and our dress reflects that. We have been casually working around the house doing home projects or yard work. All of these constraints have impacted how we feel about ourselves. The beautiful dress we wear, the perfectly fitting jeans and boots reflect our inner beauty. We dress up to let our friends and everyone know we love ourselves, to reflect our inner spirit and let others see the warmth in our hearts and sensitive minds. We say, “I’m going to dress up to let everyone know, I love life, I feel good and I’m not going to be affected by the negativity of sick minded people around me!” When we dress up, we want to feel good about ourselves. We want to put on our sexy jeans and red shoes to show others our beautiful soul and spirit. The clothes we wear are a way to connect others to our sense of artistic spirit. We have worn enough casual, back yard clothes and pajama wear to last a lifetime. It is time to “Dress Up” and go out to dinner and let our soul live and our heart beat and spirit soar again! Let’s Dress Up! Kaldoun Sassella

Staying Healthy IN CHALLENGING TIMES Anya Sebastian

THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC HAS FUNDAMENTALLY IMPACTED ALL ASPECTS OF OUR HEALTH, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally too. Virtually nothing in 2021 is the same as it was last year, but the initial shock has now given way to the challenge of finding new ways to adjust. As a result, priorities have changed, habits have changed, lifestyles have changed. Technology has, of course, played a major role in the shift in healthcare trends. No longer able to stop by the gym for a workout during lunchtime, or on your way home? No problem. Thanks to virtual exercise programs, instructional keep-fit videos and home equipment, such as stationary bikes, portable rowing machines and other appliances, there are now a multitude of options for staying in shape while staying at home. Although it’s important to keep moving, exercise alone is not enough to keep you healthy and strong, because healthcare starts from the inside out. Concern with the quality of food and beverage choices is now on the rise, as people realize that food is medicine and significantly affects the stamina, strength and immunity required for protection against viruses and other health issues. As a result, more people are opting for local foods, reading labels to check ingredients and learning which ones to avoid. This is also a time to support independent restaurants, like those featured in our dining section, that are well known for creating quality dishes from locally grown produce. If indoor dining is limited, there is always the option of curbside pick-up or home delivery. These businesses have been especially hard hit and they need and deserve our sustained patronage. Another significant trend is an increased focus on more natural, holistic ways to deal with medicinal issues and boost general wellbeing. Since the immune system resides in the lymph and 70 per cent of lymph nodes are in the digestive tract, more attention is being paid to foods and supplements that support the health of the gut. These include fermented foods such as kimchi, sauerkraut and kombucha, as well as probiotics, CBD and medicinal mushrooms, to name just a few. Advice and information on all these things can be found at Hemp Apotheke, which has an extensive range of products to assist with a variety of health issues, including stress, depression and insomnia, which are also major concerns at this time. Direct intervention and support is also available from lymph specialist, Margo Covington, who has many years of experience with all manner of health problems and how they relate to gut health. Yes, the times they are a-changing, but the good news is that we are finding positive ways to move forward and deal with these challenges, acquiring healthier habits in the process, that will hopefully become a permanent part of our lives.

BEFORE

Originally hailing from the field of anesthesiology, Dr. Lam served as an associate professor in anesthesiology and an adjunct associate professor in neuroscience. During this time he conducted numerous clinical trials, participated in NIH-funded research, and was invited to speak at prestigious international conferences “I became very successful in anesthesiology,” Dr. Lam relates, “However, anesthesiology is about crisis management and removing negative factors and potential complications. It does not empower a person or provide positivity. These things I found in aesthetics.” In 2003, Dr. Lam impressed an attending aesthetic physician with his skillful work in nerve blocks, prompting the physician to invite Dr. Lam to join her at her practice. Dr. Lam accepted the invitation and never looked back. As the medical director of AlluraDerm MD Med Spa, Dr. Lam is able to positively impact lives on a daily basis. His skill, commitment, and compassion bring out the natural beauty in his patients. “After performing a treatment, not only have I restored youth or enhanced beauty, I have also empowered a fellow human being with a sense of positivity and confidence,” he says.

AFTER

Another patient adds, “I was going out of state for fillers until I found Dr. Lam. I completely trust his judgment and skill. I’ve been very happy with my results…I would definitely recommend AlluraDerm. Dr. Lam will put you at ease.” When asked how a small practice like AlluraDerm can be ranked top 50 in the country over larger practices in cities like New York or Los Angeles, Dr. Lam explains, “I have the greatest staff in the world who share the same vision and passion to empower and instill positivity. My staff is deeply committed to providing world-class treatments and service, and the results speak for themselves. With a team like this, I feel I can achieve anything.” Dr. Lam continues, “When a patient’s face lights up with joy, or when they cry from happiness after having completed a treatment in our office, I feel I have helped them to become the best version of themselves.” With this empowering philosophy and a powerhouse combination of exceptional skill and expertise, it’s no wonder Dr. Lam is #1 in New Mexico!

Dr. Lam’s patients agree, with one relating, “I was very nervous about my treatment but the staff and Dr. Lam made me feel so safe and supported. After my treatment, when Dr. Lam had me look at myself in the mirror, I started to cry. I was looking at the picture of myself that I have carried in my mind. I was over-the-moon happy! Thank you so much, Dr. Lam!”

YOUR GUT KNOWS WHAT’S UP AND IT’S IMPORTANT TO PAY ATTENTION By Anya Sebastian

THE ARRIVAL OF COVID-19 HAS INEVITABLY RESULTED IN AN INCREASED FOCUS on healthcare as the number one priority, and finding ways to boost immunity is an obvious place to start. Taking care of the digestive tract has become particularly important, as more people come to understand that the gut is home to the immune system and interest in CBD, in particular, is significantly on the rise. “CBD has proven to be highly effective in promoting gut health,” says Gyana Basse, the owner of Hemp Apotheke, “because it works with the parasympathetic nervous system to balance the microorganisms, the flora, in the gut.” For optimum results, CBD should ideally be used in conjunction with a healthy diet, probiotics, and supplements formulated to support and strengthen the immune system. “Fermented foods, like kimchi, sauerkraut and kombucha, are especially good for promoting and protecting gut health,” explains Basse. “Medicinal mushroom products are also very effective and come in different forms—capsules, powders and tinctures—to accommodate all tastes.”

16

FineLifestyles SANTA FE & ALBUQUERQUE

Hemp Apotheke stocks a wide selection of Host Defence mushrooms, created to deal with a number of different issues. The powders can be dissolved in water, sprinkled on food, or used in recipes like the ones reproduced here. They can also be combined according to personal preferences, so an immuneboosting powder could be paired with one that helps to alleviate allergies (something else we’re dealing with right now) and in case you’re wondering, there is no after-taste. Anyone interested to learn more about the products available, can consult Hemp Apotheke’s newly launched website, hempapotheke.com. There you will find information, news, and stories of personal experiences, as well as the option to ask questions, seek advice and purchase products online. Adults are not, of course, the only ones to have been affected by the events of the past year; children of all ages, from toddlers to teenagers, have been profoundly impacted too. Stress is widespread and rising rapidly, often accompanied by feelings of depression, frustration and helplessness. Circumstances beyond their control have completely disrupted, not only their daily routines, but their entire way of life.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

In an effort to support children’s physical and mental wellbeing during these challenging times, Hemp Apotheke has put together a special gift basket for those between the ages of 8 and 17. Any child of that age coming to the store with a parent who mentions this article, automatically qualifies. Valued at over $40, the basket includes a tin of CBD gummies, bath salts, a passive diffuser with essential oil and a CBD honey stick. Other products can be purchased to add to the basket, if desired, and a minimum purchase of $50 is requested, in order to enable this gift basket program to continue. The offer will remain active as long as supplies last.

messages we put out to the universe, determine what comes back to us. We hope this gift basket will help age-appropriate children to shift their perspective, and trust that this, too, will pass.” Something practical that Basse suggests for both children and adults, is to take a few moments to carefully massage the stomach area. This helps to loosen any ‘stuck’ particles in and around the gut, at the same time alleviating any feelings of helplessness. As we all know, maintaining balance during these times can be a multi-faceted challenge, which makes it even more important to find ways to support, not only ourselves, but each other. “The gift is intended to restore a sense of personal empowerment and promote a more positive outlook,” explains Basse. “Never underestimate the power of the mind. Our thoughts, and the

K & K SKIN PRODUCTS Changing the World of Cosmetics, One Celebrity at a Time Anya Sebastian

MAKING AN IMPACT IN THE COMPETITIVE WORLD OF COSMETICS IS CHALLENGING, to say the least. It is therefore quite remarkable that K&K Skin Products, the new kid on the block, less than two years old, should already be attracting the attention of celebrities. It all began, appropriately enough, through a connection with Breaking Bad. Jeremiah Bitsui, the actor who played Victor in the award-winning TV series, and a friend of Dr. Kristina Trujillo and Katie Uilk, K&K’s founders, was an enthusiastic fan of their products. Eager to help spread the word, he introduced the skincare line to the person in charge of running the celebrity lounges at both the Oscars and the Sundance Film Festival. She tried the samples, loved them and invited K&K to join the exclusive companies selected to host a booth at both events. “Fortunately for us, both of these high-profile events took place in January and February of 2020, before Covid-19 hit,” says Katie. “The response was really positive and very gratifying and it was Kristina with Giles Marini

wonderful to be a part of the Oscars, as well as the Lounge at the Sundance Film Festival, and to be able to interact and share what we were doing, with so many people.” As it turned out, the end of the year was also marked by a celebrity event, because in October Katie and Kristina were invited to Los Angeles, to be interviewed by super model Kathy Ireland, for her television show, Modern Living with Kathy Ireland. The show, which highlights the latest in trends, products and lifestyle, airs weekly on WEtv and that episode went out on December 17th. The interview can still be seen on K&K’s website, kkskinproducts.com. The impact of this innovative skincare line is also making itself felt in spas and beauty salons, especially following the introduction of its signature product, BioVer-X, in 2019. This ground-breaking anti-aging serum, for which a cosmetic patent is currently pending, contains a molecule similar to resveratrol, but significantly more powerful. Based on over a decade of research, it dramatically reduces the appearance of wrinkles, stretch marks and scars. It is now being used in procedures offered by aestheticians and even DOMs specializing in acupuncture facelifts. At this time, Amethyst Mind Body Synergy Wellness spa

in Albuquerque uses and sells K&K products. The complete line is also available at Seraphym Boutique, inside the Inn at Loretto in Santa Fe. Ordering online directly from the company website is always an option as well. Now that the company is building name recognition among celebrities and reaching a more discerning clientele, it is currently in the process of updating the design, labelling and packaging of its products. The new look will more accurately reflect the quality and sophistication of the skincare line, which currently consists of five products. Research is now ongoing to add a natural, mineralbased sunscreen into the mix, utilizing the protective properties of zinc oxide. “We do our own research and come up with all our own formulas,” says Dr. Kristina, a biochemistry professor for over a decade at UNM, and the one responsible for bringing in the molecule that makes BioVer-X unique. “It’s a lengthy and complicated process to get it right, but the sunscreen should hopefully be available by the time summer comes around.”

Expert ADVICE

MASKS. BREATH. IMMUNITY.

MARGO COVINGTON Owner

Body Cleanse Lymph Release 521 Franklin Avenue Santa Fe 505.982.0044 BodyCleanseLymphRelease.com

NOW THAT WE’RE IN AN ERA OF WEARING MASKS so much of the time due to COVID 19 protocols, how can we make mask-wearing even safer for ourselves, while also improving our immunity even further? Slow, diaphragmatic nasal breathing—is my short answer from a book, Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art, by James Nestor. Several of my clients have recommended this book and/or told me how they tape their mouths shut at night, to great, healthy effect. We have discussed and experimented with their nasal breathing during sessions and have seen some delightful results. Our lymphatic system begins to get swampy, with edema in between the cells, when there is not enough oxygen in our bodies. How do we get more oxygen into our lymphatic system, to keep lymph fluid moving? In his book, James Nestor describes that the amount of air we bring into our bodies is very different from how oxygenated they are. Mouth breathing can bring in more air, but does not oxygenate us as well. His initial exercises are my focus here.

Lymphatic fluid and congestion can be understood when you blow your nose. It can be clear, cloudy, white, and even all the way to cookie-dough-like. Of course, hydration makes a big difference to how congested and mucousy the lymph’s viscosity may be. However, we can even move the sticky lymph during treatments, with slow, diaphragmatic, nasal breathing. SEE WHAT YOU NOTICE: First without a mask, then with… 1. Breathe in gently through your nose… to a count of 5 – 6 in, 5 – 6 out. 2. Once that’s comfortable, try bringing your diaphragm into more conscious activity both breathing in and out. My voice teacher taught us to quickly relax our belly…to “drop” it before we breathe in. Gravity pulls the relaxed belly down, and effortlessly starts opening up the lungs. Next, add more breath by moving your diaphragm further down and opening up your ribs.

If you try it at night, notice that you may need to clear your throat, or cough more often, to move the congested lymph through your throat on its way out. I am impressed by how much faster the more congested lymph can move out of our bodies when we add this technique. I would be interested to hear about your results, or to work with you if you’d like to try it out during a treatment. And because the lymphatic system is the home of our immune system, these exercises can help you get healthier and healthier…even while wearing a mask…at a time when that matters more than any other time in the last century.

3. Then she taught us to use our breath by tightening the belly muscles, almost like rolling up the end of a toothpaste tube as you breathe out, or sing, or talk. Use your breath more than usual. 4. Notice that you may cough, or clear your throat, as the stickier lymph starts moving better. So be sure to try this out when you’re in a “safe to cough” location! Margo’s headshot by Bette Ridgeway

on the Santa Fe Art Scene

While some art works can be completed in relatively short periods of time, sculpture takes a long time to make from start to finish. Parkes uses the ancient technique of lost wax casting to create his bronze pieces. Through this process utilizing a mold, he casts a sculpture done in clay or wax into a metal. From the beginning of Parkes’ first sketches to the completion of his first cast piece, it can take up to six months of work.

By Emily Van Cleve

Sculpture has been the medium of choice for many artists since prehistoric times. It’s been an important part of the expression of religious devotion in many cultures worldwide. Traditionally, sculpture has been created in materials including stone, metal, ceramics and wood. In recent history artists have experimented in working with fiberglass, concrete, paper maché and an assortment of natural and man-made materials, including found and recycled objects. As the kinds of materials used in sculpture have expanded, so have the kinds of forms that are created. Some artists prefer to work in a realistic style, while others prefer abstraction. Many ancient works depict humans, animals and mythological beings. Sculptor Michael Parkes, whose work is represented

“The one thing that I have realized is that if I am truly connecting with archetypal symbols in my work, they apply to everyone and everyone responds on some level,” says Parkes in an artist statement. “The exciting thing about making art is the constant challenge of creating a window through which the viewer feels comfortable enough to step into this unknown space.” Lisa Rodgers, the owner of The Longworth Gallery, is delighted to be featuring Parkes’ bronze sculptures in her Canyon Road space. “The prerequisite to showing in my gallery is that the artist must be an authentic lovely human being first as it is the only way I can fall in love with their art,” she explains. “Michael is that and more. He ‘gets it.’ He is the embodiment of his narrative through his art.” Sculpture created by local, regional and international artists is shown at galleries throughout Santa Fe. Many galleries have set up sculpture gardens that showcase works designed to be exhibited outdoors.

Celebrating the Gold Standard of Picture Framing Anya Sebastian

24

FineLifestyles SANTA FE & ALBUQUERQUE

THE ARTS

MARTIN (MARTY) HOROWITZ, THE FOUNDER OF GOLDLEAF FRAMEMAKERS, had plans to become an art teacher after graduating from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. The universe, however, had other plans, because he was then drafted and when he was granted a deferment (he was passionately anti-war) his graduate school funding was pulled. Having been drawn to picture-framing since childhood—he began making frames for 50 cents an hour, at the age of 13, in a small shop in Long Island - Marty changed course and determined to become the very best frame-maker instead. During his time in college he had met and studied with Henry Rothman, a master of the art and also a gilding maestro. From him he learned the Renaissance techniques of picture framing that Goldleaf still uses today, as well as the importance of historically and artistically accurate frames. After graduating, Marty went to work for Bob Kulicke, a wellknown revolutionary in the picture framing business and the biggest and most respected custom frame maker in New York at the time. There he acquired more in-depth knowledge of the history of period picture frames and also learned how to run a manufacturing facility, He went on to gain further experience with a couple of other well-known companies, as General Manager and Vice-President, before joining forces with his original mentor, Henry Rothman, to form Rothman and Horowitz, Master Framemakers. For the next several years the partnership flourished, with clients that included museums and galleries, as well as private collectors, but then health issues intervened. Marty contracted a bad case of pneumonia and was advised by his doctors to move somewhere higher up and less stressful, with a dryer, more suitable climate. A trip to Santa Fe in 1987 sealed the deal. Marty fell in love with the City Different and moved here the following year. He was 38 years old and decided the time had come to pursue his true calling, both as the creator of top-of-the-line, hand-carved, gilded picture frames and as an artist in his own right. That was almost 33 years ago and Goldleaf Framemakers has been going strong ever since. Marty sadly passed away last year, but his legacy is now in the capable hands of his son, David, who says simply, “I grew up in this business. I started working here when I was 12 years old and have been involved with it all my life.” Although he is clearly as passionate about keeping the tradition alive as his father was, David had initially embarked on a career as a scenic designer. About 10 years ago he was based in San Francisco, working primarily with theatre companies, when Marty called with an idea he wanted him to consider. “What he said was, ‘I have time now, and can remember enough, to teach you if you want to learn the business,” David recalls. “If you wait a few more years, I don’t know if that will still be true.”

team have grown with the business, some having been there for many years. All clearly take pride in what they do, which covers everything involved in the process of constructing, designing, carving, gilding, painting and finishing a picture frame. Everything is made from scratch, by hand; even the gesso is made in-house. The result is truly a work of art in its own right. But wait…there’s more! In addition to their gold frames, Goldleaf Framemakers also sources and supplies the best frames from other companies around the world, at all price points. A wide range of these frames is on display in the retail section of their location in Santa Fe. Goldleaf is now a well-known and highly respected name in the picture framing world and, as David says, “There is nothing we can’t make. We work with designers, architects, foundations and museums around the country, as well as individual clients.” As for how he sees his own role in the company’s future, this is what he told Marty when he decided to come back and join the family business, “I want to be the best frame maker since you.”

It didn’t take long for him to decide to change course and move back home. “I decided I would rather work with something that endures a couple of centuries, than something that would be torn down after a few days or a couple of months,” he says, and David has effectively been running the company for a while now. Many of the highly skilled artisans who are part of the Goldleaf

WINTER COUNTS NATIVE AMERICAN CRIME NOVEL TAPS INTO THE MOCCASIN TELEGRAPH CELL SERVICE IS HIT-OR-MISS. Temperatures dip to twenty below. The Stones’ “Gimme Shelter” blasts at the local bar. In the parking lot, expensive rides tuck in at the far end so they don’t get dinged. This is home turf for Virgil Wounded Horse, a thug for hire who dispatches justice for his people when the American legal system fails them. They’re modern-day Lakotas living on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota. Virgil is known as the local enforcer. He’s more interested in what’s fair than in charging hefty fees that might allow him to upgrade his old Ford Pinto or the shack he calls home. Still, the money’s good when Virgil gets hired to investigate the source of the heroin that’s infiltrating the rez. It’s a quest that sends Virgil into a sweat lodge, then teaming up with his strong-minded ex-girlfriend Marie to drive down to Denver. There, they get introduced to sopapillas and coffee that tastes like caramel and

costs as much by the cup as a pound of Folger’s at home, while finding links to the dealers bringing hard drugs to the rez. It all gets more entangled as the drug-dealing network expands, Marie considers moving to New Mexico, and Virgil’s teenage nephew, whom Virgil is raising alone, gets in trouble. Virgil enlists a lawyer in nearby Rapid City, noting, “The lawyer’s office was in the small downtown area of Rapid City, where there were life-size statues of every US president, and also two sculptures of anonymous Native Americans.” Winter Counts is the debut novel by David Heska Wanbli Weiden, an enrolled citizen of the Sicangu Lakota Nation, who received his MFA from Santa Fe’s Institute of American Indian Arts. It’s literary crime fiction at its finest, laced with wry wit, cultural commentary, and a propulsive plot. There’s nothing else quite like this incisive page-turner.

Expert ADVICE

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE BUYING AN ENGAGEMENT RING

FineLifestyles SPRING/EARLY SUMMER 2020 VOLUME 6 ISSUE 1

BUYING AN ENGAGEMENT RING CAN BE A DAUNTING as well as a joyful prospect, so it’s a good idea to know what to look out for before you begin your search. Since diamonds are by far the most popular choice, here are some pointers to get you started. Think of them as the four Cs: Color, Cut, Clarity and Carat weight.

“Jewelry is my passion. I believe that jewelry is so much more than metal and stone; it is your honor, your promise to be true, your history and your heritage. It is an heirloom from your ancestors, or perhaps something you will pass onto future generations. Every piece of jewelry that passes through my hands is treated with that level of respect. This is what I believe.”

- James Kallas

Your Local Jeweler, Your Family Jeweler, Your Favorite Jeweler

COLOR Most diamonds have traces of yellow, brown, green or grey and it’s rare to find one without any color at all. Consequently, the more colorless the diamond, the greater its value. CUT Diamond cutting is a highly skilled and precise art, which determines how the stone’s many facets interact with light and consequently how brightly it sparkles. Look for a diamond with the most brilliant sparkle for its size. CLARITY This is defined by how many small imperfections there are on the surface or within the diamond itself. In most cases, since they cannot be seen with the naked eye, they do not detract from the beauty of the gem, but those with fewer flaws will attract a higher price tag.

The Awning Advantage CARAT WEIGHT This is the unit of measurement used to describe the weight of a diamond, not its size. The average carat weight of an engagement ring diamond in the United States is between 1.00 and 1.2 carats, 1 carat being the equivalent of a fifth of a gram.

Once you’ve decided on the kind of stone you’re looking for, the next thing to consider is the band. Does white gold or platinum appeal to you, or would you rather have rose or yellow gold? Here are a few things to bear in mind when choosing a band: platinum does not corrode and is the hardest and most durable; white gold is an alloy of gold and at least one white metal, usually silver, nickel or palladium. Pure gold is too soft to make into jewelry, so it has to be mixed with other metals for added strength. 18kt gold is 75% pure gold, mixed with silver, copper or zinc.; 14kt. gold is 58% pure gold, with the same added metals. It is slower to tarnish and more resistant to scratching or corrosion, because the other metals make it harder and more durable. The most important thing to remember when purchasing an engagement ring is that it will be a part of your life for a very long time, so choose carefully. Once you have decided and the purchase has been completed, it would be advisable to get the ring insured. That way, you will have one less thing to worry about as you move on to making plans for the next chapter of your life together.

Awnings commonly come in aluminum or fabric; aluminum is hardier and comes in basic colors, whereas there are over 200 fabric color options in both solids and stripes. Fabrics are vinyl or canvas, and have a 10-year warranty. Businesses often prefer fabric awnings because they can be backlit, and a business name and logo can be printed on the fabric. For businesses, it’s a great way to make an office facade pop, as well as give additional branding.

There’s something timeless about an awning; the appeal lies both in the quaint quality it lends an edifice, as well as its utility blocking the elements. With so much direct sun, New Mexico’s homes and offices are ideal for awnings, both as accent pieces and sun blockers. Santa Fe Awning has been family owned and operated for over 20 years, and has the inventory and knowhow to create the perfect awning for your home or business.

Diamonds come in a variety of shapes, the most popular being round. They can also be oval, square, rectangle, marquise or pear-shaped, it is entirely a matter of personal preference.

wnings are great for north, east and northeast exposures because they block the directness of the morning sun. They are also good protection against rain hitting windows or doors, and can help cut cooling costs by keeping the sun off the glass,” explains manager Sara Talachy. “In the winter, a canopy over a doorway can keep ice off the walkway below. And because so many people in Santa Fe have custom doors, an awning can protect a beautiful front door.”

Huge awnings, like that over the Santa Fe Opera – which Santa Fe Awning installed – can be used as an elaborate patio cover. Santa Fe Awning has even had customers use awnings as makeshift patios and enclosures. One man installed a mini patio under his awning that could be zipped in during the winter to create an improvised mud room. Santa Fe Awning also did the patio enclosures at the Boxcar Bar and Grill and Il Vicino Wood Oven Pizza. It’s a great option for businesses wanting to make use of a patio area year-round.

construct, but also among the most popular. “It comes down to preference,” says Talachy. “A lot of costumers like the dome, but it’s harder to create the circumferences. It’s a classic, upscale look.” Other designs include quarter barrel and half barrel, as well as concave. Santa Fe Awning designs, fabricates and installs all its awnings, taking care of the project from beginning to end. Painting is done in-house in acrylic, usually by Talachy herself. “It gives an ambiance to the living space outside,” she describes. Give your home or business an easy facelift with an attractive awning in time for spring!

Awnings come in a few standard shapes. The rigid frame, or straight-slope awning, is comprised of a triangle over a window. This is the most basic and common design. By utilizing a scissor framework underneath a straight-slope awning, it can become retractable. The dome design is the most difficult to

It was clearly a partnership that was meant to be. Two sisters-in-law, one a research scientist and one an artisan specializing in blending natural oils for skincare, came together to combine art and science in a revolutionary new line of skincare products.

DR. KRISTINA TRUJILLO, WHO SPENT OVER A DECADE as a biochemistry professor at the University of New Mexico, had come across a molecule that was to change her life. Similar to resveratrol, an ingredient derived from red grapes and often found in high end, anti-aging products, this molecule was even more powerful, with six times more anti-oxidant properties and ten times more anti-inflammatory properties than resveratrol itself. Dr. Trujillo immediately recognized this as an exciting breakthrough; the challenge was how best to maximize its potential.

The answer came when Dr. Trujillo’s sister-in-law, Katie, invited her to come and help with the line of skincare products she was putting together. Based on years of research and experimentation, Katie had created different oil blends that had successfully cured her own skin conditions. That is when Dr. Kristina really began to understand and appreciate the scientifically proven properties of these oils. They could be anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-

inflammatory, anti-oxidant, calming, energizing, healing... and that is when an idea suddenly occurred to her. What might happen if Katie’s products were to be combined with the molecule she was so excited about? The rest, as they say, is history. After extensive research and impressive results obtained from well over 100 volunteers, it was abundantly evident that this revolutionary skincare product worked to dramatically reduce the appearance of wrinkles, stretch marks and scars. It even had a visible impact on psoriasis, eczema and rosacea. Just one product, the BioVer-X Anti-Aging Wrinkle Serum, contains the molecule, for which a cosmetic patent is currently pending. Produced in a certified organic facility in Taos, it does not have any harsh preservatives. “Most cosmetic products are water-based,” explains Kristina, “and since water goes rancid over

Good news spreads fast and estheticians and spas are now incorporating BioVer-X into their treatments, along with acupuncturists specializing in acupuncture face lifts. Hollywood is on board as well; the company’s products were among those selected to be given to celebrities at the 2020 Oscars and Sundance Film Festival EcoLuxe Lounge, both held early this year. Fortunate timing, for sure, especially as BioVer-X is available through the K&K website, so it can safely be obtained without leaving home. Or order over the phone and speak directly with Katie. It is worth noting that, before K&K came along, resveratrol (the ingredient BioVer-X is derived from) was considered one of the most potent antioxidants on the market. Luxury skincare companies regularly charge up to $500 for products containing resveratrol. Given that BioVer-X is both substantially more potent and substantially less expensive, New Mexico may soon have the distinction of being recognized as the birthplace of the next revolution in the world of cosmetics. The K&K line currently consists of five unique products and, with winter fast approaching, the Body Serum is another good investment. “Harsh winter air can draw moisture out of the skin, leaving it dry and flaky”, explains Katie. “Creams and lotions really don’t help, since they just sit on top of the skin and don’t penetrate.” The Body Serum, however, does. Consisting of a combination of several premium carrier and essential oils, it is best applied on wet skin, replicating the skin’s natural oil barrier and sealing in the water, leaving the skin hydrated, silky and soft. Strong enough to heal dry skin, and gentle enough for baby skin, the Body Serum can also be used for shaving, which makes it effective for the entire family, as well as a great gift. Anyone ordering products from the K&K website, is invited to take advantage of a special 20% discount holiday offer, effective through January 2021. Simply type in the code holiday20 when placing your order. And exciting news! Kristina and Katie will be interviewed by world-famous supermodel, Kathy Ireland, for her show “Modern Living with kathy ireland®” to be aired on WE tv in December. NOTES FROM A LOCAL

THE WHITE WINE REVOLUTION WHILE CRITICS HAVE BEEN PREOCCUPIED WITH RED WINES LATELY, white wines have been staging a quiet revolution. The benefits of white wines are many: they’re typically lighter in alcohol, they pair with a wide variety of foods, and, cost-for-quality, they’re more affordable than red wine. As well, they are typically consumed while young and therefore do not require laying down. We are going to focus on three white grapes readily available here in the USA: Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, and Chardonnay. Sauvignon Blanc is a white wine that owes much of its popularity to winemakers in Bordeaux and the Loire Valley in France. The name Sauvignon Blanc means “Wild White”. Most Sauvignon Blanc wines are dry with primary fruit flavors being lime, green apple, passion fruit and white peach. What makes Sauvignon Blanc unique from other white wines are its other herbaceous flavors like bell pepper, jalapeño, gooseberry and grass. Try the elegant and refreshing Duckhorn Sauvignon Blanc 2019 or the sublime Merry Edwards Sauvignon Blanc 2019. It’s hard not to love Chenin Blanc. Somewhat weightier than Sauvignon Blanc and lighter than Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc makes lithe, dry summer whites and sparkling wines that are versatile in style and have the ability to adapt to a wide variety of tastes. It also offers oak-aged styles with similar flavors to Chardonnay. Thus, there really is a Chenin Blanc wine for every occasion. Try the Chappellet Signature ‘Molly’ Chenin Blanc 2019 or The Prisoner No. 39007 2018. And finally there is the majestic Chardonnay grape, ranging stylistically from the classic style oak aged Chardonnay that produces a creamy, buttery white wine, to the unoaked version that produces a lean, dry minerally style. Oaked Chardonnays are rich, full-bodied and have additional flavors of vanilla, butter and even caramel from the oak. Unoaked Chardonnay has a more zesty style with flavors ranging from lemon and green apple (less ripe) to pineapple and figs (very ripe). For oak aged wines try the Kistler range. These wines are rich and decadent with luxurious mouth feel. For a less oaked style, try David Ramey’s wines. Made in the more Burgundian style where David learned his winemaking skills, these wines offer a more acidic balance while allowing the fruit flavors to make themselves known. Start experimenting now so that you have your wines of choice before the temperatures soar. Start by doing a blind tasting of all three grapes, and then narrow your focus to a particular grape and its different expressions. Better yet, just drink them all! Cheers!

YOUR TASTEBUDS ARE IN FOR A TREAT AT

SAZÓN By Debbie Stone

THE DOORS OF SANTA FE’S BELOVED SAZÓN ARE OPEN ONCE AGAIN and Executive Chef and owner Fernando Olea is overjoyed to see the faces of his customers. “I’ve missed everyone so much—our guests and my team, who are truly like family to me.” The past year was challenging for Chef Olea, as it was for the restaurant industry as a whole. For Chef Olea, however, the difficulties were manifested by a previous fire, which shut down Sazón for seven months. “We closed, then reopened, then closed again,” he explains. “But, now, thankfully, we’re back in business.” Never idle, Chef Olea spent the downtime researching, cooking and creating new dishes for what he describes as his New World cuisine. Originally from Mexico City, Olea brings the classics of Mexican food to life with his own distinct style. He says, “I start with the basics and then incorporate flavors from around the world.” Sazón’s sophisticated fare has enthralled diners since opening in 2015. The restaurant has received AAA’s Four

Diamond Award two years in a row and is ranked number twelve on TripAdvisor’s list of Best Fine Dining Restaurants in the U.S. In Santa Fe, it’s number one. Chef Olea has also been recognized for his culinary artistry, as a James Beard Award semifinalist and New Mexico Restauranter of the Year. He was even on the cover of American Airlines’ Celebrated Living Magazine. Sazon’s cuisine takes diners on a sensory journey. The menu is deliberately small, featuring fresh, organic and sustainable products when possible. Nightly meat and seafood specials such as pan seared beef tenderloin with spinach sauce and rosettes of zucchini, beef bone marrow in a chili chipotle base over a bed of rock salt and salmon wrapped in filo are featured alongside mainstays like Camaron-Tini—lightly battered and fried colossal white shrimp with a sweet Thai chili aioli—and Cholula, a tower of chile poblano, ground lamb, pork and beef, nuts and dried fruits over a creamy walnut sauce. Adventurous foodies might want to try Oaxaqueños or baby grasshoppers served with avocado on a corn tortilla.

accompanied by select pairings of tequila, mezcal and wine for the ultimate experience. And now, small private parties can enjoy an evening of gastronomy in the new Las Catrinas room. “It’s a very beautiful space,” comments Olea, “very intimate and perfect for a small group.” Chef Olea wants to reassure people that the restaurant has taken all necessary precautions regarding the health and safety of its staff and customers. He says, “We take this very seriously, but we’ve always had high standards and gone above and beyond the regulations.” As for the future of the restaurant industry, Olea is optimistic and hopes for normality to resume in the coming year. He emphasizes caution, though, extolling people to continue to be careful, adding, “We all need to work together on this and deal with these problems as a united country.”

In addition to the regular menu, Sazón has a ten-course Degustación tasting menu. This culinary extravaganza can be

Enjoy fine Italian dining with peace of mind at

Sassella By Debbie Stone

NO ONE IS MORE EXCITED TO WELCOME DINERS TO HIS SANTA FE RESTAURANT THAN CRISTIAN PONTIGGIA. The Executive Chef and owner of Sassella has missed cooking for his customers and being in a fully staffed kitchen with all the action. He says, “It’s the noise, the smells, the interaction and the people.” He adds, “It’s everything that goes into giving my customers a memorable dining experience.” Sassella recently opened its doors to indoor dining, and Chef Pontiggia is thrilled to see a number of his loyal guests, along with some new faces, enjoying his exceptional Italian cuisine and extensive Italian fine wine selection. The award-winning chef, who hails from northern Italy, is known for his culinary artistry that melds old-world traditions with new world influences. Sassella’s new menu has something for everyone and includes such taste-tempting dishes as Venison Osso Bucco, Lobster Risotto with pistachio arugula pesto, Veal Sweetbreads in a red wine demi-glace, melt-inyour-mouth Burrata Mousse with heirloom tomatoes and crispy Italian salami, White Seabass over lemon butter fregola pasta and Spaghetti Bison Bolognese.

It’s not only the food and wine at Sassella that takes top marks, but also its elegant, yet cozy ambiance and attentive service. Chef takes pride in having a well-trained and knowledgeable staff. Sassella’s bar is noted for its selection of over sixty gins from around the world and over twenty- five Italian amaros. Gin and amaro tastings that teach the nuance and complexity of these increasingly popular but relatively unknown libations occur daily. Chef Pontiggia has taken all the necessary health measures to ensure his customers’ and his employees’ safety. The restaurant is New Mexico Safe Certified, tables are appropriately spaced for physical distancing and disinfected between use, UV filters are in place, servers wear masks and have their temperatures checked regularly and menus are sanitized, among other extensive protocols. “We care about everybody,” comments Chef, “and we are doing everything we can to make our customers feel comfortable.” In addition to indoor dining, Sassella has a large patio available to diners. Those who are still cautious about indoor dining are invited to check out Sassella’s newest addition, the Deli at Sassella, located at 216 Mckenzie Street just behind the restaurant. A variety of ready-to-eat and bake-at-home options, along with unique specialty products imported from Italy are available, including cheeses, meats, oils and vinegars, pastas and sauces, homemade

breads, pizzas, soups, paninis, and even gelato. “We opened the deli in December,” notes Chef Pontiggia, “and it’s doing well, considering we’ve mostly relied on word-of-mouth.” He adds, “Customers seem to like all the authentic Italian items. It makes them feel like they’re getting a true taste of Italy.” As the dinner reservations at Sassella will show, however, there is pent-up demand for indoor dining. Eating out has been at the top of many people’s wish lists since the pandemic began. Once viewed as a customary activity in our society, this practice is no longer something we take for granted. Chef Pontiggia, who is also President of the American Culinary Federation New Mexico Chapter, is optimistic about the future outlook for restaurants. He emphasizes that the industry is united in its commitment to safety and that there is hope that life can eventually return to some semblance of normality in the coming year. He adds, “We in this business need to cook and connect with people—that’s our passion.” Visit our website at www.Sassellasantafe.com

SANTA FE IS ON THE MAP The rapid rise of prices and record demand in 2020 have been driven equally by local buyers and buyers across the country. Texas and California continue to be our largest feeder markets, while others filter in from surrounding states. Typically the buyers are coming from higher-priced markets, which gives them a financial advantage that many local buyers must compete against. The ability to work remotely, our high quality of life, and unique culture is attracting a diverse group of people to our city. 530 S. the upshot What a year we had in real estate for 2020! We’re entering 2021 with record low inventories and our December average sales price was up a whopping 25% over where we started in January of last year. Construction costs have been increasing the past several years nationally by about 5% per year but local contractors will tell you it’s certainly more than that in Santa Fe. With little inventory of resale homes, we’re finally seeing a marked increase in new construction in both housing and apartments. That’s good because we need more options for buyers. Transactions of vacant residential land sales increased 77% between the 1st and 4th Quarters while the average price was up only 5.5% to $154,000. There will be no diminishment of out of state buyers coming into Santa Fe; we’re seeing a younger demographic moving here and a higher percentage of them making Santa Fe their permanent residence as opposed to a 2nd or 3rd home. All this bodes quite well for owners of a residential property but makes it more challenging for the first time home buyer.

knew that Santa Fe, with its natural beauty and reputation as a desirable place to live, was a strong magnet for people wanting to escape from big cities. But the demand for new homes exceeds the supply, so people are buying existing, older homes and getting them refurbished and updated, rather than starting from scratch. They would rather do that, than wait a few years for a home to be built to their specifications.”

SPENDING SO MUCH TIME AT HOME DURING THE PAST YEAR has motivated many people to finally confront previously neglected maintenance and improvement issues. “There’s definitely been a shift in how people view their home environment,” says Jeff Valdez, one of the founders of GLASSplash. (see page 48) “They want to make their home into a sanctuary, rather than just a place to sleep.” The main areas of improvement are kitchens and bathrooms, because these offer the best return on investment when it comes to adding value to the home. Both Jeff and his partner, John Patterson, are interior designers, with many years of experience working with homeowners in Los Angeles. Their company, ‘Inspired Living Design,’ which they brought with them when they relocated to Santa Fe, specializes in remodeling and restoring houses, both old and new, and they became known, in particular, for their imaginative kitchen and bathroom designs. GLASSplash is a relatively recent addition, bringing an extra, innovative dimension to the services they have to offer. “We were inspired to move here, because Jeff was raised in New Mexico and we were frequent visitors,” explains John. “We

Another major consideration was the realization that Santa Fe is currently going through an artistic transition. The predominantly Western themes, commonly referred to as ‘Santa Fe style,’ are now evolving to embrace broader, more international, contemporary and sophisticated design elements. “We really wanted to be a part of that,” says John, “especially since we are very familiar with combining classical and contemporary features in our design work.” Being the artistic hub that it is, Santa Fe is home to a wide variety of artists and creative artisans, many of whom are now featured in private collections and, as Jeff points out, “The potential for incorporating artworks from around the world into a home environment is very exciting, especially as Santa Fe is home to Indian Market, Spanish Market and the International Folk Art Market.” GLASSplash has already established some very successful working relationships with both art collectors and indigenous artists in and around Santa Fe. Design consultations with Jeff and John can be arranged through their website (glassplash.us) and they will also accompany buyers and/or realtors to a prospective home purchase, to give them ideas for remodeling options. “Giving people the opportunity to envisage the potential of a place, can completely change how they view it,” says John. “We excel at looking beyond the physical structure as it is, to imagining the possibilities of what it could become.”

GLASSplash IS THE CREATIVE OFFSPRING OF TWO INTERIOR DESIGNERS. Although still in its infancy, it is

TAKING ART BEYOND THE LOOKING GLASS By Anya Sebastian

rapidly blazing a trail into previously unexplored territory, attracting the attention of art collectors, celebrities and anyone excited by ground-breaking ideas and original, sophisticated design. Put simply, GLASSplash specializes in giving art a new medium and artists a new canvas, by putting their creative works onto tempered glass, which is then used for a practical purpose. It could be a backsplash for a kitchen sink, a bathroom shower door, an outdoor fountain, a room divider, cupboard doors…the potential is limited only by your imagination. If appropriate, the glasswork can be backlit by an LED light panel, making the image come alive and adding a whole extra dimension. The story began in California, where John Patterson grew up and where he and Jeff Valdez first met. John had an uncle, who was an artist and who, as he explains it, “brought out the artist in me. He took me to galleries and museums and taught me to paint as well. He became like a mentor to me.” Becoming a professional painter himself, however, didn’t feel quite right and after graduating from UCLA, John took a part-time job with an interior designer. “That’s when it clicked and I realized where I belonged and how I could fit into the art world,” he says. He went on to partner with that interior designer and spent about ten years learning on the job. He then bought a used furniture store in LA, restoring and refurbishing pieces, both classic and contemporary. And that’s when he and Jeff met, in 2003. Jeff, a New Mexico native, born and raised, had a background in photography and graphic design. It was

upstairs into two apartments for rent, which is what we did. When people saw what we had done, they asked us to work on their homes too. We just went from one to the next, never advertised once.” John picks up the story. “ One of our clients was a prominent African American artist, who loved to cook. Their kitchen needed work and Jeff came up with the idea of putting his art onto glass and using it as a backsplash for the kitchen. A light went off in my head and I thought, that’s it! I started putting together a business plan and that’s how GLASSplash came about.” Since Jeff is from New Mexico, they decided that Santa Fe would be a better place to launch an art-focused business, than Los Angeles. They also felt that it would be easier to form collaborative relationships, spread the word and make an impact, in a smaller city. Since moving here in 2019, they have completed some remarkable projects, primarily in private homes in Las Campanas, Eldorado and Santa Fe. Particularly drawn to Native American art, they discovered the work of Acoma Pueblo digital artist, Jonathan Juanico, and contacted him to ask if he would be interested in putting his designs on glass. Juanico was blown away by the idea and that collaboration went on to become, and still remains, one of the most successful and enduring artistic partnerships. “Our aim is to promote the artists we work with,” says John. “We want to celebrate these artists and the culture that gave birth to their artistry and we also make a point of donating to any indigenous foundation of their choice, after each project is completed.” a perfect match. The two started working together and the business thrived, until one day a well-known Hollywood actress walked into the store. “She bought more furniture than we had ever sold in one day,” recalls Jeff. “She told us she was restoring and refurbishing a house, but she was also planning a wedding and working on a movie and was completely overwhelmed. She asked if we could help out by overseeing the final house renovations, which we were of course delighted to do.” More projects followed and from that point on, design became the duo’s main focus. Life was good and business flourished for a few years. Then the economy collapsed.

Anything that can be digitized can be put onto glass and Jeff’s graphic design background means he can translate works of art into a digital format, while still respecting the integrity of the original. GLASSplash has now partnered with companies around the country that are able to complete the process of transferring the images onto glass, so clients can be based anywhere, nationwide. “We are now collaborating with builders and architects, as well as artists and designers,” says Jeff, “because this really is teamwork. Nothing we do is a stand-alone piece. Every project, inside or out, has to work with the environment it’s a part of, in order to be successful.”

“2008 changed everything,” says Jeff. “We sold the store and decided to buy and renovate a rundown house in a historic LA neighborhood. The plan was to live downstairs and split the

Meet the Famed Sentinels of the Desert at

SAGUARO NATIONAL PARK

by Debbie Stone

CACTI ARE QUIRKY CHARACTERS WITH THEIR SPINY EXTERIORS AND ODD SHAPES. You either like them or you don’t. I personally find them beautiful and admirable for their unique qualities. These plants are real troopers. They’re strong and stalwart, and possess everenduring patience. Their needs are few and they handle challenging conditions with aplomb. The saguaro cactus is particularly fascinating. It’s the largest cactus in the country and found only in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona. This species is so special that it has a national park named after it. Saguaro National Park is located on the outskirts of Tucson, and is represented by two sections: the East or Rincon Mountain District and the West, or Tucson Mountain District. The districts are about thirty miles apart and the city lies between them.

SPORTS, REC & TRAVEL

The saguaro has a commanding presence over the landscape and is one of the defining plants of the Sonoran Desert. Over the years, it has become a symbol of the American West and been given starstudded treatment in many western films.

If you’re short on time, focus your energy on one of the sections. Both have scenic drives and hiking trails. I chose the West and took the Bajada Loop Drive. The road offers views of the valley and saguaros as far as the eye can see.

As you explore the park, you’ll learn that the saguaro grows very slowly and its height is dependent on the amount of available water. The tallest saguaros are about 200 years old and can have as many as fifty arms. These cacti typically don’t start getting their notable curved arms until they’re around fifteen feet tall and over 75 years old.

The Desert Discovery Trail features ginormous saguaros, and has interpretive signs about the animals, plants and ecology of the Sonoran Desert. Another, the Valley View Overlook Trail, passes through two washes and ascends to a ridge with a picturesque vista.

Saguaro also have long, woody ribs, which support their multi-ton weight. The more hydration they receive, the heavier they’ll get, as they expand to store the moisture.

There are also petroglyphs in the park. The trail to Signal Hill leads to a boulder-covered summit with dozens of drawings etched into rock. They date from the Hohokam period, 450-1450 A.D., and range from humanlike forms to abstract shapes.

The saguaros put on a show in May and June when they produce cream-colored blossoms. Later in the summer, a deep-red fruit appears, and the wildlife has a feast. Some creatures not only feed upon the plants, but they also create nests in them. Humans, too, reap the benefits of this fruit. They harvest it when ripe and make syrup and jelly from the pulp.

Numerous creatures make their home in Saguaro National Park. You might see a Gila Monster or Javelina roaming the desert floor. I felt lucky to spot a rattlesnake basking in the sun in the road. As I gazed at this handsome guy, a park ranger arrived and “encouraged” the snake to find another, less precarious hangout.
