Summer 2021 in Santa Fe brings a renewed energy to normalcy with the return of a number of local and international events that we are all looking forward to. The Wine & Chile Fiesta will be held at Fort Marcy this year. If you love great food from some of the area’s most creative chefs, this is the event for you. Oh, did I mention the fantastic wines available to taste and purchase? The Plaza will be host again to the Spanish Market, July 24-25, the Indian Market, Aug. 21-22 and the International Folk Art Market for two weekends in July. And what summer wouldn’t be complete without attending an evening at the beautiful Santa Fe Opera. Back with a full offering of events in July and August, tailgating at the Santa Fe Opera is a must. Restaurants are open and their chefs have created new and exciting dishes to stimulate our palates. There is a special “Open Table/Trip Advisor Review” feature in the Dining Section that will give you an idea of what other diners thought about their experiences. Featured on the cover is a home in Tesuque with retractable wind & patio screens installed by Santa Fe Awning. LET’S MAKE AMERICA
BEAUTIFUL AGAIN! WE ARE OPEN NOW AND I CAN SEE THAT COVID REALLY HIT US HARDER THAN I THOUGHT. It seems that we have let our “Fashion” guard down. We have to get out of our current mindset and go beyond our homes and away from our dining room tables and out to restaurant tables, off of our home sofas and to relaxing wine bar sofas, out of our pajamas to nice fitting jeans and sexy tops. We need to dress up and reflect our beautiful inner soul and make everyone take notice. Seeing a beautiful woman wearing nice jeans, a beautiful top and great looking boots, is a simple way to make someone look great again make others really take a second look. When we dress up casually and look great, we are doing ourselves a favor by making everyone appreciate our self love. We are doing ourselves a favor by sharing our beauty with everyone and saying I love myself, assuring everyone you are sexy in that dress or that skirt or that pair of jeans. We can say with our clothes that we are as beautiful as the deep blue sky in New Mexico or as sexy as the sunset in Santa Fe! Love yourself, let everyone know by looking great at the dinner table with someone who enjoys looking at you as much as he or she would enjoy watching a beautiful Santa Fe sunset! Panerai Luminor Flyback with Officine Panerai oscillating weight on bottom
MYTH BUSTERS! IN ANY PROFESSION OR INDUSTRY, RUMORS, ASSUMPTIONS, AND BELIEFS make their way into mainstream thinking, becoming mythical. Watch service and repair is no exception. Here are a few myths that need busting. 1. Pulling the stem and crown out will save the battery in my quartz watch. Busted: Pulling the stem and crown out only stops the hands from moving. The movement in the watch is still drawing power, but the movement is strained. 2. Batteries used to last forever. Busted (somewhat): It is true that batteries used to last many years. However, by international law, mercury is no longer used in watch batteries. The expected life of a watch battery is now 16-18 months. At World Class Watches, spent batteries are recycled. 3. My watch is supposed to be waterproof. Busted: Watch brands have stopped using the term “waterproof” and will only say “water resistant” unless it is a diver’s style of watch. No watch is waterproof if the crown of the winding mechanism is left open and then submerged. A watch that may have been considered waterproof when it was new, loses its ability to retain this status. A 30-year-old watch, if worn regularly, is unlikely to retain its water resistance. 4. My Automatic Wind watch stopped. How can I get it running again? This is not really a myth but a misunderstanding. Frequently, our customers are surprised that their automatic winding watch can be hand wound. Ideally, an automatic wind is wound by the movement of the wearer’s arm when the watch is on the wrist. The natural movement causes the oscillating weight to move, which winds the watch. However, if the watch stops, it can be manually wound. Unlike a mechanical watch which can only be
16
FineLifestyles SANTA FE & ALBUQUERQUE
wound so many times before there is resistance, an automatic wind can never be overwound because the mainspring starts to slip when fully wound. 5. A mechanical watch should be as accurate as a quartz watch. Busted: If 100% accuracy is your goal, purchase a quartz watch. A hand or automatic wound watch is an engineering marvel, and the more complicated the movement, the more amazing it is. Even chronometer-rated watches are not as accurate as a quartz, which gain less than 1/10th of a second per day. That said, a mechanical watch’s movement that is regularly serviced, in most cases, outlasts a quartz movement. 6. The second hand in my chronograph is not moving. Busted: Most chronograph watches have two or three subdials, each having its own hands, and a chronograph hand. Frequently, chronograph owners are unaware of the fact that one of the subdials is the running second hand and use the chronograph hand as the second hand. This causes unnecessary wear on the movement, and in the case of quartz watches, runs the battery down faster. World Class Watches has been in the business of servicing swiss watches for 16 years and we have heard it all. If you have questions about how your watch works, how long it should hold a wind when fully wound, what the button on the side of the watch does, or any other questions, we are here to educate and enlighten you. Visit us at our shop at 222 E. Marcy Street, Suite 9 in Santa Fe. We also sell a collection of pre-owned and vintage watches, watch winders, and a large selection of leather straps.

EXPERT ADVICE JAMES KALLAS JEWELERS CUSTOM IS WHAT WE DO
JEWELRY MIGHT BEST BE DESCRIBED AS PERSONAL ADORNMENT. Whether it’s a ring, necklace, bracelet or earrings, jewelry is often filled with memories, symbolism and sentiment. James Kallas of James Kallas Jewelers understands this intrinsically and strives to offer clients custom options, one-of-akind pieces and in-shop repairs.
After discerning what styles his client gravitates towards, Kallas puts the ideas to computer aided design, which can then be rendered for preview by the client. This way, variances in metals and stones can easily be modified until the client is fully satisfied with the design.
Kallas’ breadth of workmanship underlies his depth of skill. “I started making jewelry when I was 12,” he relates. “Friends of my parents won a raffle on jewelry equipment, so I’d go into their basement and make jewelry. Over the years, I kept building on those first steps. I am mostly self-taught, but everyone along the way meets people who influence them. Even employees have influenced my work, and I am grateful for all my teachers.” Kallas has worked in Santa Fe since 1991, and he opened James Kallas Jewelers in 1996.
When embarking on the process of creating a custom design piece of jewelry, clients often are not able to envision the final product. “By rendering a picture and making a wax model, we try to remove the unknown and give the client a more precise idea of what the final piece will look like,” explains Kallas. Once the wax model is milled and approved by the client, the piece is cast in Kallas’ on-site shop, which extends beyond the showroom. This makes James Kallas Jewelers the locals’ store for custom repairs. Kallas and his team are also experts in restoring your heirloom pieces to their former glory.
At James Kallas Jewelers, there is something for everyone and, if you don’t see it, Kallas can make it. His custom line of stackable rings is made from different colored metals, diamonds and gemstones, allowing wearers to change their style simply by rearranging the order of the rings. This unique and chic line can also be paired with matching earrings.
Stop by to browse the showroom, discuss your jewelry ideas with Kallas, or see him at work.
When a client comes in looking for custom jewelry, Kallas generally begins by sketching designs on paper. For instance, with an engagement ring, he starts with the shape of the stone. It could be a family stone, or it could be a stone that Kallas has sourced from a host of dealers around the country. Sometimes clients bring in a photo of something they like, or they might model it off another piece of jewelry they admire, like their mother’s ring. Customers also get ideas from finished pieces on display in the store.

INDIGO BABY
Santa Fe’s Premier Baby Store By Anya Sebastian
INDIGO BABY OFFERS A WIDE VARIETY OF HANDCRAFTED AND ARTFUL ITEMS for all ages, from newborn to 99. The store specializes in locally made goodies and toys, clothing and parenting essentials, that are ethically made and free of toxins. The eye-catching, appliqued denim jackets and stunning heirloom quality quilts are among the top favorites. The store’s owner, Katie Hyde, grew up in Santa Fe and has a master’s degree in early childhood education from the College of Santa Fe. Now a mother herself, she acquired the store about six years ago, after working there and running it for about a year. “I always knew I wanted to do something with children,” she says, “as well as give back to the community. Promoting talented local designers and artists, and supporting small, independent companies, is a very important part of my business.” Standards are strictly adhered to and companies are carefully researched before orders are placed, to make sure their products are fair trade and ethically sourced. “Small businesses like that are also much easier to work with,” says Katie. “If there’s ever an issue of any kind with one of their products, they will gladly replace it, no problem.”

Indigo Baby is filled with things you will not see anywhere else, and certainly not all in the same place. It is really a boutique, with a range and variety of items far too extensive to list here. The underlying goal is to make it a fun place to visit, with the emphasis on putting the “fun” into functional. Where else would you find handmade wooden toys from Questa, made-to-order, appliqued denim jackets (newborn to adult), jewelry, play houses, non-toxic face paint and nail polish, whimsical Zia T-shirts, handmade fancy dress costumes, charming wooden wall clocks, books by local authors…and so much more? It is the ultimate resource for kids of all ages. Even that is not all. In the rear of the main display area is a section devoted to recycled clothing, donated for resale by customers. There you will find minimally used items for all ages, from newborns to about 8 years old, and since children grow so fast, this is a very valuable community resource. Moms are not forgotten either, for there is also a selection of gift items especially for them, including soaps, wine glasses, bath bombs, crystals and bags. Last, but certainly not least, there is a separate room in the back for special events. Before the pandemic hit last year, it was a popular place for birthday parties, baby showers, music classes, mother and baby yoga, and storytelling, among other things. Currently on hold, it will hopefully be back in use before too long. Check the website (theindigobaby.com) for updates. Indigo Baby 185 Paseo de Peralta, Santa Fe. 505.954.4000 theindigobaby.com

ULI’S
Taking Your Appearance to the Next Level By Anya Sebastian
ULRIKE CAMPBELL STARTED HER CLOTHING STORE IN LOS ALAMOS 36 YEARS AGO and it has since become an established fixture in downtown Santa Fe. The secret to her long-term survival in such a highly competitive business is simple—she does not compete. Uli’s is a genuine boutique, a place filled with things you will find nowhere else; things that are edgy but not trendy; classical but not dated; well-made, quality clothing, both formal and informal, without sticker shock prices. But wait…there’s more! What really makes this place unique is that Uli is on a mission, and that mission is to dress people in such a way that they look, and feel, better than they would ever have believed possible.
20
FineLifestyles SANTA FE & ALBUQUERQUE
“Women’s bodies are not all standard shapes and sizes,” she points out, “and I myself have always been really hard to dress. I could never find clothes that fit me well, which is one of the reasons why I started this store. So I work with people to find things that make them look their best. If it doesn’t look good, I don’t want them to buy it.” Not surprisingly, her exceptional brand of individual customer service, completely lacking any pressure to buy, builds relationships, and well over half her customers are regulars. Some even fly in from all over the country to work with Uli on putting together a seasonal wardrobe, or acquiring an outfit for a special occasion. When people leave her store, they leave with more than just a purchase - they carry with them a memorable and positive experience. It has clearly

been this way from the start, because Uli has files filled with glowing, hand-written notes from grateful customers, thanking her for taking their appearance to the next level.
as well as a kiddie corner catering to newborns and toddlers. There you will also find ideas for a baby shower or birthday, as well as a variety of books, toys and puzzles for children a few years older.
Uli buys from small companies, both American and European, and before signing on the dotted line with designers based in the US, she makes a point of visiting their factories to make sure their employees are well taken care of. She favors natural fabrics, organic cottons when available, and promotes the work of local artists. Accessories are not forgotten either, from hats, shoes and bags, to scarves, belts and jewelry, including a collection by the designer who worked on the long-running TV series, Sex and the City.
And if you are searching for a special gift, check out the distinctive gift section. This is the only place you will find unique salt and pepper shakers made by a local artisan, mini music boxes from Germany, novelty purses and unusual wine glasses, to name just a few. Just like the clothing, everything in the store has an eyecatching quality that takes it beyond the ordinary and when the time comes to leave, chances are you will walk out of there with a smile on your face, knowing you will be back.
Although the main focus of the store is women’s clothing, there is also a bridal section and a section devoted to men,

NOW THAT CBD HAS GONE MAINSTREAM, it is increasingly found in products that range from cosmetics and bath salts, to lotions and pet foods. Items come from near and far, but the rapid progression from relatively unknown to popular acceptance was not supported by an increase in popular education. As a result, people assume that all CBD, derived from the hemp plant, is basically the same. Nothing could be further from the truth. Apart from the fact that there are many different varieties of hemp, its effectiveness depends on how the plant is grown, processed and shipped. If it is then used as an ingredient in the subsequent manufacture of different products, even more considerations come into play.
KEEPING IT LOCAL Anya Sebastian
24
FineLifestyles SANTA FE & ALBUQUERQUE
It would obviously be impossible for the average consumer to play detective, in order to find answers to such questions, but with Hemp Apotheke based right here in Santa Fe, there is fortunately no need. The owner, Gyana Basse, has established a personal relationship with her suppliers - all of whom are independent businesses, operating to the highest standards of integrity - and she knows exactly where her products come from and how they are made. Much of her inventory is in fact locally made in partnership with Aromaland, the nationally and internationally known company that brought essential oils to the market in 1986, when few people
HEALTH THE & ARTS WELLNESS
had even heard of them. The knowledge gained after so many years spent working with plants, was invaluable, and going from essential oils to CBD was a logical transition. One of the notable things about one of the lines of products developed by Aromaland is that many of them include terpenes. This is something found in all plants, that determines the scent, flavor and feeling response that the plant produces. Does it make you feel relaxed, focused, sleepy, energized, calm? Extracting specially selected terpenes and adding them to a CBD based product can therefore help to address particular issues, such as stress, pain, or difficulty sleeping. The product line also benefits from an additional, specific terpene profile, as well as a proprietary process that optimizes absorption of the ingredients. Everything is produced on state-of-the-art machinery and every final product undergoes rigorous third-party testing in four categories: potency, herbicides, pesticides, fungicides and heavy metals. It just so happens that the state of New Mexico now requires anyone engaging in the manufacture of hemp/CBD
products to apply for a special permit. The process involved is lengthy and thorough, covering everything from the receipt of raw materials to the shipping out of the final products, and Aromaland was one of the first companies to qualify. In addition to its health-focused products, Hemp Apotheke also has CBD gummies, made in-house, a selection of teas, edibles, chocolate bars, sodas, pet treats and a locally made, CBD-based skincare line. The store's main priority is customer service and Gyana Basse and her team go out of their way to offer consultations and advice to customers seeking information about the benefits of CBD and how it could help them. "We make a point of working with people and following their progress," she says, "because everyone is different and there's no 'one fits all' solution. You really need to build a relationship, in order to get the best results".

THE ARTS
SPOTLIGHT on the Santa Fe SummerArt Scene By Anya Sebastian
Summer is here at last, bringing with it some welcome relief after the bleakness of a winter like no other. Those dark times are thankfully receding and the vibrant colors of nature are calling us to bring color back into our lives as well. Art is a wonderful and very effective way to brighten up our home environment and Alexandra Eldridge’s colorful, limited edition prints—illustrations for a new tarot deck The Radiant Tarot, due out this fall—are the perfect artistic pick-me-up (see samples on page 29) With 78 to choose from, there is bound to be something to appeal to everyone’s taste, so check them out at alexandraeldridge.com. They also make great gifts. Santa Fe’s renowned summer art events are back this year, even if circumstances inevitably cause them to operate differently. The International Folk Art Market will take place over two weeks, on the upper level of Milner Plaza, from July 7th to 11th. and 14th. to 18th. About 40 artists will be taking part, and public attendance is limited to a maximum of 200 guests per 2-hour session, with timed tickets now on sale. Masks are mandatory for both attendees and participants, with artists required to take a covid-19 test before boarding their international flights. Another beloved event, Santa Fe Indian Market, is back, but in hybrid form. The virtual on-line marketplace, launched last year, will be combined with a smaller, curated, in-person event on the weekend of August 21 and 22, for which, for the first time ever, a limited number of tickets will be sold. This is to allow for staggered entry onto the Plaza (tickets will be time-related) and will hopefully be just a one-off requirement for 2021. Next year the Market will be celebrating its 100th anniversary and that is definitely something to look forward to. The fact that both these events are held outdoors is definitely a plus right now, and fortunately that includes the Santa Fe Opera, which is also coming back this year. The season, which runs from July 10 to August 18, consists of 30 performances of four operas, including both classics and the world premiere of a new work, The Lord of Cries. Seating is limited and masks will be required, but at least opera lovers will once again be able to enjoy this world class event.

So let’s all breathe a sigh of relief and celebrate the fact that things are slowly returning to normal. Art is an essential part of Santa Fe’s unique cultural and social scene, so let’s get out there and make a point of welcoming and supporting the artists who do so much to enrich our lives and sustain the spirit of this community.

SANTA FE WINE & CHILE FIESTA CELEBRATES ITS 30TH YEAR RETURNING DOWNTOWN WITH TWO GRAND TASTINGS IN 2021 “30th Anniversary September 22nd thru 26th not to be missed.”
ON A BRIGHT AND SLIGHTLY COOL AFTERNOON in downtown Santa Fe on the last Saturday of September 1991, the first incarnation of Santa Fe Wine & Chile took place. It was a one-day event where for $10 you could buy a coupon book with 8 chits, each one redeemable for a taste from one of the 20 participating Santa Fe restaurant food booths. A wine tent featured samples from 20 world-class wineries. Thirty years, and a lot of fine wine later, the Santa Fe Wine & Chile Fiesta Grand Tasting returns to downtown Santa Fe with not one, but two Grand Tastings on the grassy lawn of Magers Field. Event organizers report that each of the two Grand Tastings will feature 90 wineries pouring tastes and 35 Santa Fe restaurants serving samples of their signature cuisine. The ticket price for each of the Grand Tastings on Friday September 24th and Saturday September 25th will be $175, with a two-day pass available for $300. SFW&C Fiesta 2021 President, Hal Leonard, reports that the “Grand Tasting crowds will be limited to half the size as in the previous renditions, providing more space to move about and shorter lines. Meanwhile, the same high caliber wines and extraordinary Santa Fe restaurant tastes will be on hand, with programming that provides for the health, safety and enjoyment of all.” The September 22nd through 26th schedule is filled with daily Wine Seminars, Cooking Demos, Guest Chef Luncheons, a Reserve Tasting, a Live Auction and nightly Wine Dinners hosted at participating Santa Fe restaurants. Sunday events will include the Gruet Golf Classic, a Champagne Brunch at Four Seasons Rancho Encantado and the Rosé All Day extravaganza at Bishop’s Lodge, part of the Auberge Resorts Collection. Tickets go on sale July 5th at santafewineandchile.org.

notes from a local
Lover DISCOVER VALTELLINA VALTELLINA LIES A LITTLE OVER 60 MILES NORTHEAST OF MILAN in the Sondrio province and is not only one of Italy’s smallest and least known wine producing regions, but also one of the most forbidding landscapes in the world in which to grow grapes. Perched on impossibly steep slopes, tiny terraces, many less than .65 acres in size, can only be cultivated by hand. With that in mind, you begin to understand the phrase “heroic viticulture,” which is used in Italy to describe regions like Costa d’Amalfi, Mt. Etna, Ischia, Valle d’Aosta and—perhaps most notable of all—Valtellina. The region’s claim to fame is Chiavennasca, the local name for various ancient clones of Piedmont’s famed Nebbiolo grape. The first written references to Chiavennasca date back to the 12th century, although it is likely that the variety was being grown in the region well before then. The name comes from the local dialect, Ciu Venasca, meaning “more winey”. The average age of the vineyards is around 50 years, with some vineyards in the Sassella sub-zone exceeding 100 years. The Valtellina valley is divided into two wine zones, Valtellina Rosso DOC and Valtellina Superiore DOCG. However, this is Nebbiolo of a different class: more gossamer than Barolo, and more mineral and berry-toned than Barbaresco. The earthiness of Valtellina Superiore is more akin to petrichor—the smell after a rainstorm—than it is to truffles or tar. The wines of Valtellina are on the rise and improving with every vintage. Oenophiles are taking notice, and the next generation of producers is worth watching. Once a rarity in the USA market, one can now find a number of labels that are worth discovering. Three producers that make excellent wines are Nino Negri, Dirupi, and Tenuta Scersce. Try the Tenuta Scersce Sforzato di Valtellina ‘Infinito’. Step up your game and sample the Nino Negri Sfursat ‘Cinque Stelle’ or the Dirupi Sforzato di Valtellina ‘Vino Sbagliato’. All three wines are sure to stop you in your tracks. And the fact that they are less expensive than the more well know Nebbiolo wines from Piedmont makes them that much more attractive. It’s a big wine world out there. Like venturing down little known country roads, being adventurous when it comes to wine pays huge dividends.

SANTA FE’S FINE DINING, TEQUILA TASTING HOT SPOT By Kelly Koepke Photography by Herschel Mair Photography Creative Direction Suzanna Becerra
SANTA FE’S FINE DINING SCENE COMES ALIVE IN SUMMER – with museums, markets and more luring residents and visitors alike to enjoy the mild temperatures and abundant sun. Sazón, the City Different’s different take on traditional and contemporary Mexican fine dining is ready to dazzle you with fresh flavors. Just two blocks from the Santa Fe Plaza, and walking distance from most downtown hotels, Sazón’s sophisticated Mexican cuisine and libations are unequalled anywhere.

Award-winning chef and Sazón co-owner Fernando Olea has been captivating diners in Santa Fe for twenty years. His unique interpretation of contemporary and traditional cuisine marries the complex, modern flavors visitors expect using Old Mexico’s indigenous and culinary techniques and seasonal ingredients from around the world. In addition to customer favorites like his interpretation of chile en nogada, and savory, earthy corn truffle over mini crepes, Chef Olea has created some tantalizing new summer plates. The entrée rack of lamb with New Mexico mole, rice noodles, silky sweet potatoes and blanched beets drizzled with balsamic reduction combines simple ingredients to superior effect. For dessert, try the helado de mole poblano, Chef’s famous mole poblano ice cream floating in chocolate with roasted beet and sweet potato crisps. And what goes better with the exciting flavors of Mexico than tequila, the national libation? Sazón’s recently introduced tequila tastings on Wednesdays and Fridays offer curated flights of both mezcals and tequilas. Don’t know the difference? These tastings are the perfect opportunity to discover the distinctions, what the three aging designations mean, and why the very best tequilas can be more expensive than the priciest French cognacs. The offering includes a flight of five tequilas and mezcals, two flavors of house-made sangritas, as well as a nibble of Sazón’s famous home-made moles. Space is limited and pre-paid reservations must be made in advance; ask about private tastings, as well. Like the public areas of the restaurant, the private dining room is decorated with original artwork both from coowners Lawrence and Suzanna Becerra’s private collection and world-class Mexican artists whose works are snapped up by discerning collectors. Or, make your reservation for the handful of intimate outdoor spaces. In fact, with a second consecutive year Wine Spectator Award of Excellence and its ranking among the top restaurants on the Trip Advisor Travelers Choice Award list, Sazón’s world-class experience of cuisine, service and ambience means reservations are a must this summer and into the fall. And if a visit isn’t in the stars, Chef Olea’s palate-pleasing moles are available through the Sazón website for local pickup or shipping direct to your door, ready to complement your own at-home dining. Welcome, summer. Welcome to Sazón.

Award Winning Fine Italian Dining! By Kelly Koepke Photography by Herschel Mair Photography Creative Direction Suzanna Becerra
WHAT’S BETTER ON A WARM SUMMER AFTERNOON or evening than relaxing on a gorgeous patio? How about enjoying the innovative Italian cuisine of a multiple award-winning chef? When you visit Sassella, Santa Fe’s premier fine dining destination, you’ve got both! The spacious, leaf-shaded courtyard has been refreshed and expanded by co-owner and designer Suzanna Becerra. New umbrellas and a covered pergola make the patio perhaps the most romantic outdoor dining experience in a city known for mild weather and picturesque views. With a newly imported pasta making machine direct from Italy, Executive Chef and co-owner Cristian Pontiggia has expanded

Sassella’s pasta shapes and textures, and combined them with seasonal and traditional fillings, toppings and sauces. The classic carbonara, a peasant dish given a sophisticated twist with a sous vide egg, is already a visitor favorite, as is the lobster risotto. Chef has also introduced a Snake River Ranch Wagyu beef filet topped with a torchon of truffle foie gras that melts into the fork-tender meat. What better way to accompany one of Sassella’s signature dishes than a glass of the restaurant’s newest wines. “Chef’s deep connections in Italy mean Sassella can bring some amazing wines to discerning diners of Santa Fe,” says Lawrence Becerra, co-owner. “We have been able to bring in the Derthona Timorasso from La Colombera winery, made from vines cultivated in the Tortonian territory of Italy since the Middle Ages. We have brought one from the Dirupi winery; Cristian knows the winemakers—they are from the same town and went to school together.” Chef Cristian was recently named the American Culinary Federation’s 2020 New Mexico Chapter Chef of the Year. This prestigious accolade comes in part for Chef Cristian’s cooking, but perhaps as important, his service to the community and profession. He volunteers as a “superchef” for local nonprofit Cooking With Kids educating children and families to make healthy choices. Chef also serves as President of the New Mexico Chapter of the ACF, advocating tirelessly for the restaurant industry, while providing over 4,500 lunches to first responders at Christus St. Vincent hospital, a thanks for their extraordinary work this past year. As we emerge from our isolation, heading to a tailgate at the Santa Fe Opera or a patio party with friends might be on the calendar. So pick up bake or grill-at-home pizza kits from The Deli at Sassella, directly behind the restaurant on Mckenzie Street. Not only can you gather ready to eat Italian sub sandwiches, sauces, meatballs and sausages, pasta dishes and charcuterie boards, three exclusive-to-Sassella artisanal desserts from local bakery Coquette are now available. Whether the lemon, berry or classic Nutella, all in decorative jars, strike your fancy, these single serving treats are a sweet end to any meal.

So welcome the summer with delicious food and drink from Sassella—on their patio or yours!

YOUR SUMMER SANTA FE DINING EXPERIENCE By Kelly Koepke
SANTA FE IS BOOMING! Travel and tourism have picked up, and restaurants are welcoming patrons eager to return to their pre-pandemic dining out habits. The Compound, Santa Fe’s largest restaurant situated on the bustling Canyon Road, is no exception; it’s the go-to spot for locals and visitors to the City Different at any time of year. And especially in our busy summer season. With two outdoor patios, a small and mighty team of servers, wine and cocktail experts, and led by award-winning chef and owner Mark Kiffin, the Compound has received multiple accolades including recognition as New Mexico True, Wine Spectator’s Best of Award of Excellence 2020, 2015-2020 Certificate of Excellence Winner from Trip Advisor, Restaurant Legacy Award, and the 2015 James Beard Semifinalist for Service. Kiffin, New Mexico’s only James Beard Award winning chef, transitioned the smaller side patio, which acted as outdoor dining space last summer, to serve as a warm weather plein air bar. “It’s really taken off,” he says. “Especially in the evening, with the couches and lights and the firepits, it’s a really fun place to have a glass of wine from our lauded list curated by Kristina Bustamante, our Wine Director.” Or, recommends Kiffin, sip a seasonal cocktail or two created by expert mixologist Bryan Laramie, who finds the most interesting ingredients from our local farmer’s market for garnishes and flavors, like watermelon

Dining alfresco is always a treat at The Compound, with both the front terrace and back patios open shaded by their signature red umbrellas. Note that when making that must-have patio reservation, if inclement weather makes it impractical for a superior guest experience, diners will be contacted prior to service to either relocate their reservation inside if space is available, or reschedule the patio reservation for a nicer day. Naturally, diners will always enjoy their indoor experience, with its Alexander Girard designed décor, and naturally physically distanced tables. To accommodate the increased demand this summer, the Compound now opens Tuesday through Saturday for lunch and dinner, with evening service beginning at 5 p.m. “With restaurants still recovering from the pandemic, we made the decision to concentrate on honing our service, keeping and training our dedicated staff, and ensuring that we can give every single guest the best possible experience. That means making sure that everyone has balance in their work and family lives,” Kiffin says. MORE THAN JUST A PRETTY TABLE! by Anya Sebastian
MIDTOWN BISTRO BLAZED A TRAIL WHEN IT OPENED in what was predominantly an industrial area of Santa Fe, ten years ago. While it may have seemed an unlikely location back then, the restaurant has since established itself as a popular fine dining destination in what is now a bustling business center of town. “We just felt it had potential and was the place to be,” explains coowner Edmund Catanach, “and as it turned out, we were right.” The businesses that have now moved into the neighborhood include doctors, dentists, lawyers, accountants and insurance agents, among others. As Catanach says, “Downtown has come to midtown.” The building itself is unique in a number of different ways and has an interesting past. It is the only commercial structure in Santa Fe made from Pumice-Crete, a mixture of low density, volcanic pumice, mixed with cement and water, that provides both structural strength and insulation at the same time. Originally built as a showroom for Santa Fe Stone, an attractive variety of different kinds of stoneware can still be seen inlaid in the floors; stone structural beams still sit above the windows and doors, and the window sills are fashioned from rock. Outside are

a number of distinctive fountains, with water flowing from unusual stone and rock formations. The gardens surrounding the restaurant are beautifully laid out, filled with plants and brightly colored flowers which, together with the sights and sounds of running water, create a peaceful and welcoming atmosphere. The expansive patio, too, is filled with plants, trees and fountains, and is adorned with fairy lights at night, all of which adds up to a quite exceptional dining experience on Santa Fe’s warm summer evenings. Inside, the spacious restaurant has its own distinguishing features, notably the original works of art by the entrance, and in both the main room and the bar area. The majority of paintings were specially created by Jason Roberts, an exceptionally talented local artist, who tragically succumbed to cancer at the age of 37, about 18 months after Midtown first opened. Several eye-catching works by another local artist, Arlene Ladell Hayes, are displayed in the hallway and the new room in the back. Then, of course, there is the food, which has earned a special reputation of its own. Described by chef Angel Estrada as, “American food with a southwestern flair,” it caters for virtually all tastes, including vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and organic dishes yearround, as well as a wide variety of seafoods and fish. Carnivores are well taken care of, too, with a mouth-watering selection of what Catanach jokingly refers to as “the bad stuff”, such as rib-eye steak, filet mignon, rack of lamb…fill in the blank. Intended to be primarily a local establishment, where people can come to relax, talk business, meet with friends or family, celebrate birthdays or anniversaries, Midtown is now much sought after by tourists as well. “The people who live here are the ones who tell visitors where to go to eat,” Catanach points out. There is also no shortage of favorable reviews on the internet. With its many attractions and special ambiance, a visit to Midtown Bistro is guaranteed to satisfy all five senses. Reservations are advised. Midtown Bistro 901 W. San Mateo Rd. 505-820-3121 www.midtownbistrosf.com

JOSEPH’S CULINARY PUB Discovering a Silver Lining in the New Reality By Anya Sebastian
AFTER 25 YEARS DEVOTED TO HIS SUCCESSFUL CAREER AS A CHEF—something for which his passion has clearly not diminished in the slightest—Joseph Wrede, the chef/owner of Joseph’s Culinary Pub, was finally forced to take a break last year and go back to the drawing board. “When your entire way of doing things is stripped away—the ability to serve inside, with wine and beer, putting specially prepared food on a plate made specifically for that dish by a craftsman, you gain a new perspective on what you’re trying to accomplish,” he says. “So in spite of the shocking and entirely unprecedented set of circumstances we were faced with in 2020, the pandemic was positive in the sense that it made me focus on what my objective really is.” Wrede has now clearly defined that objective, which is to provide the most excellent lunches and dinners possible. With that in mind the restaurant’s hours have now been cut back, with lunch served from 12 to 2:30 and dinner from 5 to 9. “We used to stay open until 11, or sometimes even midnight,” he says. “That’s fine if you’re doing tapas or latenight snacks, but not if you’re striving for excellence.” There are compelling reasons why seating past 9 o’clock is not the best game plan for an eating establishment like Joseph’s. “ We are offering a full 3 course menu with wine, in an atmosphere designed to make everyone feel relaxed and welcome, and there’s a lot that goes into that, behind the scenes,” explains Wrede. “The whole process is like a
42
FineLifestyles SANTA FE & ALBUQUERQUE
DINING
symphony; it requires preparation, taste, texture, presentation, excellent service, sanitization…Sustaining that kind of energy for 6 to 8 hours is a challenge.” Another essential part of the mix is Wrede’s special talent as a culinary artist. As is clearly evident from the menu, what stands out is the unusual blending of ingredients, the bold flavors and excellent quality of the food, most of it locally sourced. The menu changes with the seasons, but vegetables always feature prominently, because Wrede enjoys creating original dishes that raise the bar for those who typically expect vegetables to be unremarkable. He also enjoys the challenge of addressing things that people dislike. “If someone doesn’t like something, that tells me it’s because it hasn’t been prepared properly,” he says.
WREDE HAS A CLEARLY DEFINED OBJECTIVE, WHICH IS TO PROVIDE THE MOST EXCELLENT LUNCHES AND DINNERS POSSIBLE. Being an involved and experienced chef, Wrede spent much of his time during lock down watching videos about cooking in general and Asian cooking in particular, which he found especially engaging. That inspired the creation of a duck pad thai dish—his own version, of course—which is proving to be an extremely popular addition to the menu. Joseph’s has always followed the guidelines and safety protocols required to keep guests and staff safe, and the restaurant is Serve Safe NM Covid certified. Check the website (josephsofsantafe.com) for current days/hours of operation and to make a reservation. Early reservations are advised and if you are not able to find a table, you’ll be glad to know that the full menu is also available for take-out.

EL NIDO

EL NIDO BORROWS ITS NAME FROM THE SPANISH FOR NEST, and its open, comfortable dining rooms, cozy patio and wood-fired menu certainly speak to the easy living of summer. Less than 10 minutes from the Santa Fe plaza, El Nido’s historic building and tree-filled location in the village of Tesuque form a true oasis in the high desert. This summer, El Nido welcomes head chef Jose Montalvo Alas, or Chef Sigi as he is known around the Santa Fe restaurant scene. Since 1992, he’s mastered grilling techniques at Mark Miller’s groundbreaking Southwestern cuisine restaurant, Coyote Café, and has refined his palate at notable establishments like La Casa Sena and Luminaria.
an eye to the seasons, the El Nido menu features a salad full of the bounty of the local farmer’s market, and specials to highlight what’s new and notable. House made desserts get the seductively smoky treatment, too. As do many of the signature cocktails from the drink’s menu. And the staff can advise the perfect bottle or cocktail based on guests’ food choices, tastes and the season. So, whether you come for cocktails on the patio, or a meal with family and friends in the dining rooms, Chef Sigi and the staff invite you to find comfort this summer at El Nido.
At El Nido, he’s showcasing this rustic casual way that open flame cooking appeals to everyone, whether you’re interested in grilled meats or fish, or freshly made pastas and pizzas. Always with

FANS OF SASHIMI, SUSHI AND TEMPURA have a new place to satisfy their cravings—Su “the nest” in Japanese—a 15-seat, restaurant located within El Nido. Diners enter this tucked away remodeled space (El Nido’s former stage room), by a separate side door last used three-quarters of a century ago. El Nido and Su’s owners, the Bowdon and Odal families, were longtime customers and friends with Su’s Executive Chef Masayuki Hattori. Masayuki trained with his uncle in Kyoto, Japan in the art of making sushi. After 26 years at helming his Downtown Santa Fe restaurant Sushi Land East, Chef Masa “retired.” The families worked with Chef to create an omakase-style experience reflective of his creativity and a traditional Japanese experience. Su showcases his precision and vast creativity in preparing omakase, a Japanese phrase meaning, “I leave it to you.” Diners tell Chef what they like or dislike, or simply allow him free reign to create a seasonal, artistic, intimate and refined meal. Rest assured, everyone will enjoy the freshest fish and vibrant flavors anywhere. Su’s omakase offerings start at $65 per person and change with every visit, built on the inspiration of the master chef and the freshest ingredients. The preparation and attention required to prepare omakase is intensive, so space is limited to a limited number of diners. Book your reservations for Thursday through Sunday for the amazing flavors, delicate beauty, and authentic tradition of omakase at Su, your Japanese nest just 10 minutes from the Santa Fe Plaza. SusanD Every course a new adventure Just marvelous all around. Professional, efficient and super-pleasant staff and service. And the food! Fresh, thoughtful, inspired. We shared the smoked trout, pear and arugula salad, then had the fish of the day (Corvina, with crispy skin, and rice with mango, pineapple and coconut, with broccolini and a pineapple beurre blanc to die for). And then the surprisingly wonderful butterscotch pudding. We will be making Joseph’s a regular destination. You are in first rate hands here. Enjoy! LonB Unbelievably good My girlfriend and I went our first night in Santa Fe, the whole meal start to finish was perfection as well as the service. First course was an appetizer of tuna tartare, the second appetizer was roasted vegetable ratatouille. The entrees were lamb curry and duck pad thai. This meal was one of the best we ever had. We highly recommend this restaurant.
Sarah M A Santa Fe Must! I’ve been here a couple times and I’ve enjoyed it so much every time! The cuisine is amazing, especially their calamari!! Jessica S Beautiful, pandemic friendly patio Step out of the madness and misery of Covid-19. A picture says a thousand words so I will try to include some pictures of this beautiful place. Santa Fe County Residential Market Report
First Quarter 2021
Based on Information from Santa Fe Association of Realtors MLS for the period (MAR 2020) through (MAR 2021). This representation is based in whole or in part on data supplied by SFAR MLS. SFAR MLS does not guarantee nor is in any way responsible for its accuracy. Data maintained by SFAR MLS may not reflect all real estate activity in the market.
A strong sellers market continues, driving prices up over 36% on average. In just one year, average home prices rose from the high $500,000s to the high $600,000s. Homes selling over asking price has become common in our market as buyers bid up the price.
61% DROP IN INVENTORY FUELS HIGHER PRICES Mirroring the nationwide real estate market, our local market continues its trend of rising home prices stemming from increased demand and a shortage in inventory. In the past, 2,000+ homes on the market in Santa Fe County was common. At the end of the first quarter of 2021, there were just 214 homes on the market in all price ranges.
As demand continues to outgrow supply, we saw an increase in sales from the same time last year. If our inventory were sufficient to meet increased buyer demand, that number would be much higher as buyers are waiting in the wings. EXPERT ADVICE ODOROUS HOUSE ANTS CAUSING STINKY PROBLEM IN SANTA FE
A RECENT SURVEY CONDUCTED BY THE NATIONAL PEST MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION (NPMA) showed that ants are the most common nuisance pest in the United States. When it comes to indoor ants, one ant stands out above all others this time of year. Service calls at our Santa Fe service office have begun to pick up for odorous house ants, also sometimes referred to as sugar ants. If you accidentally crush one, you will quickly learn why they have such an unusual name, as they will emit a smell like the odor of rotten
coconuts. These ants are highly tolerant of other ants and occasionally live in compound colonies with other species. Completely black in color, they tend to be no more than 1/16 inch long. Found throughout the world, odorous house ants are one of the more common household ants. In addition, unfortunately for homeowners, this species is known for being one of the most difficult household ants to control because it has the innate ability for “getting into things.” We know odorous house ants will appear each spring because they always take advantage of artificial heating in buildings to survive the winter. They will infest almost all areas of a building where food is available and infests many areas where food is not commonly found. Infestations commonly occur in food service areas. Hospitals are of heightened concern with this species, as these ants can spread disease and contaminate sterile equipment and rooms. Odorous house ants have a wide preference in the types of food consumed. In infested areas, if sweet, fatty, or oily foods are left uncovered for only a short period of time, one can likely find a trail of sugar ants to the food. They will also eat other insects. They have multiple queens and can move their colonies from place to place when disturbed. They begin new colonies when a

I highly recommend Truly Nolan for pest and rodent control. George thoroughly inspected the interior/exterior of our home. He was professional, knowledgeable and kind.
I signed up for the monthly program that Truly Nolen has in Santa Fe back in November/December 2020. I am so happy that I did! I have a massive ant problem in my house which has been causing me a lot of anxiety. Thomas has been to my house twice - the first time to treat for sugar ants in the kitchen and the second time to begin a treatment plan for carpenter ants. He is incredibly methodical in assessing how the treatment should be done. He is personable and very professional - he’s happy to answer all my questions about ants and explaining his observations regarding how they could have gotten into my house, etc. Finally, I really appreciate him taking my hatred of ants seriously by listening to the problems they’ve caused in my house, as well as walking from room to room with a flashlight and diligently looking for signs of ants, and treating accordingly. Thanks Thomas!
Our long-standing technician, Thomas is efficient and very thorough. He is knowledgeable and considerate in answering all of my questions. Also offering an appropriate amount of small talk while getting the job done. Not to mention he has always been on schedule! We have used their services for over a year, which has dramatically lowered the prevalence of mice/ants in and around our home. Thank you George and Thomas for getting our mice/ant problem under control! JACLYN L. After a long winter, we started seeing some unusual beetle-type bugs. thanks to ongoing service from Truly Nolan year round, they were dead when we saw them. We called Truly Nolan and they came the next day to provide an additional service and identify the bugs. THOMAS THE TECH is our hero. He ALWAYS goes above and beyond. he is pleasant, courteous and knowledgable (and he loves our dogs). Can’t commend Thomas or Truly Nolan enough!
small group of workers and a single queen migrate from their colony to start a new colony. In addition, odorous house ants are crafty because they can build nests in walls, cabinet voids, behind baseboards, refrigerator insulation, the hollows of curtain rods, the folds of clothes, sheets and paper and other undisturbed dark spaces. In short, this ability to find places to build nests makes them extremely difficult to control. Do-it-yourself control of odorous house ants is difficult, due to their nesting in inaccessible areas. Treatment must be thorough and complete at all nesting sites, as well as the foraging area. Thus, treatment must include walls, ceilings, floor voids, and electrical wall outlets. Baits are the preferred method of control for odorous house ants and several baits (insecticides) are labeled for indoor ant control. Ants nesting on the outside may be controlled by also using a perimeter barrier treatment. However, as mentioned earlier, their ability to migrate quickly when disturbed gives this species the ability to survive most conventional household pest control treatments. A colony of odorous house ants will scatter if a toxic substance disturbs it, creating multiple problems where there had been only one. In controlling them, it is often advisable to seek a pest control professional.

DESIGN & ARCHITECTURE
WHY BE ORDINARY? A UNIQUE DESIGN COLLECTIVE WILL BE OPENING IN SANTA FE at the end of September. Interior designers Jeff Valdez and John Patterson, the founders of Inspired Living Design and its latest innovation, GLASSplash, are teaming up with Sukhmani Home, importers of hand-crafted decor and antiques from India and Southeast Asia. If this seems like an unconventional marriage…well, it is, but there is more to it than meets the eye. “We intend to make this a design destination,” says Jeff. “We want people to feel welcome, come in, look around and discover things they won’t find anywhere else.” The approximately 3,000 square foot showroom will be filled with a wide variety of treasures for the home, from furniture— both contemporary and repurposed—to architectural artifacts, textiles, rugs, ritual objects, artwork and Sukhmani Design jewelry. Celebrating indigenous artisans and cross-cultural diversity is a major part of the plan, together with a desire to assist in the evolution of Santa Fe style, bringing new life and a more sophisticated energy to southwestern design. In other words, to quote John, “Why be ordinary? The field is overcrowded as it is.”
GLASSplash has, from the start, made a point of highlighting and promoting the artisans they work with. “We want to celebrate the cultures and creative energies that gave birth to their artistry,” says John. Giving back to the community is also important and the company donates a share of proceeds to non-profits, art schools, pueblos and other organizations. This new venture will carry on that philanthropic tradition. “Our showroom at 340 Read Street, across from the railyard, will be offering the services of Inspired Living Design, as well as the introduction of GLASSplash to the Santa Fe market,” says Jeff. “Our clients will be our main priority and, with that in mind, we want to bring back the art of customer service. We value our community and we’re here to greet Santa Fe with a warm welcome to our new home.” It certainly looks as though the arrival of this novel design collective will give an exciting new boost to Santa Fe’s reputation as ‘the City Different.’ Their mantra, ‘Why be ordinary?” is a perfect fit.

SUMMER’S HERE AND TEMPS ARE ON THE RISE. It’s the time of year when you want to kick back on your lovely portal and admire the view, while enjoying the long hours of daylight. But, you don’t want to bake out in that hot sun, nor do you want to have to contend with the wind. The solution to your problem Santa Fe Awning Patio Wind and Solar Screens.
The company’s Santa Fe Shade Sails is another popular alternative. These colorful, flying geometrical shapes, made of a variety of solar shade meshes or solid reinforced fabrics, are both functional and artistic in nature. Each is custom designed, fabricated and installed, offering a modern look that can take the place of pergolas, porches and gazebos.
Santa Fe Awning, a family run and operated sun solution company since 1994, is in the business of promoting energy efficiency. It offers a variety of products from traditional window awnings and patio wind and solar screens to shade sails and interior screens. The company takes pride in its New Mexico made, high-quality products, attention to detail, exemplary customer service and its employees.
Awnings are also used to help establish a façade for your home and help shelter you from weather elements, while protecting furnishings from the intense rays. The company’s welded frame
“Our employees are like family,” says Sara Maul, who owns Santa Fe Awning with her brother Charles and father, Jeff Maul. “We all work together as a team,” she adds. “We value each of our employees, most of whom have been with us for a long time. Our newest fulltime employee has been with us for nine years; our oldest has actually been with us for twenty-four years.” The main advantages of having Santa Fe Patio Wind and Solar Screens are to block harmful UV rays and wind, without sacrificing the view. With just the push of a button or manual crank, you can enhance the usability of your outdoor space and prevent the heat from beating down on your glass windows. Maul notes that blocking the UV rays significantly reduces summer cooling bills. She says, “We’re finding that more people don’t want to constantly have to run their swamp coolers in summer and they are discovering that our products really help make this possible.” And in the winter, the screens can be retracted or rolled up for solar gain.

awnings come in different colors, sizes and shapes, such as traditional rigid, dome quarter barrel, concave and more. When it comes to the interior of your home, Santa Fe Awnings’ uses Insolroll Interior Screens and can be custom ordered! They are the answer to protecting your home form the harsh New Mexico sun. This product ups the comfort factor in your house by keeping it cool in the summer. The easy-to-operate, energy-efficient screens do double duty by protecting your fabric, furniture and art from possible sun damage. They are also an answer to creating more privacy if desired, and can be made to fully block out the light for those who need complete darkness when getting their shuteye.
This past year when the pandemic was hitting many businesses hard, Santa Fe Awning was fortunate to stay busy. Maul believes it was the fact that everyone was staying at home and many people were motivated to do home projects. This year, however, is turning out to be more of a normal year for the company with its busy period typically occurring in the spring to fall months. She explains that the company gets a lot of its business via word-of-mouth and traditional advertising, adding, “And we also have a great repeat business record.”
Santa Fe Awning manufactures their products right here in Santa Fe. “We try and make our products so that we don’t have to go back and service them,” comments Maul. “We have very high standards for everything we produce and customer satisfaction is of the utmost importance to us.”

WELCOME TO LINSON’S An Aladdin’s Cave of Fabrics By Anya Sebastian
WHEN LUPIE AND CHRIS LINSON DECIDED TO SET UP A LITTLE UPHOLSTERY BUSINESS, working out of their spare bedroom, 43 years ago, little did they know where that decision would lead. “We got married very young,” says Lupie, “and we needed an income, so Chris took a job in an upholstery shop. He was there for about a year, learned the basics and really liked it, so we thought we’d give it a shot on our own.” From those humble beginnings, Linson’s has now grown into a flourishing family business, well established and well respected throughout New Mexico and even beyond. There is literally nothing for home or business, that requires the use of
60

upholstery or fabrics, that Linson’s cannot provide. Everything is custom made, in house—Roman shades, bedspreads, blinds, couch and chair covers, cushions, curtains, window coverings, even wall hangings. After 25 years on Cerrillos Road, the business recently moved to a new location on Sandoval Street, in downtown Santa Fe. The place is welcoming, light and airy, and is stacked with multiple rolls and displays of every conceivable kind of fabric, both interior and exterior, plus literally thousands of books of samples. “We are now the largest supplier of fabrics in New Mexico, with over 650 lines,” says Lupie, “and if we don’t have what you’re looking for, we know where to get it.”
DESIGN & ARCHITECTURE
Commercial projects have also been a major part of Linson’s business for many years. Hotels, restaurants, real estate companies and, more recently, the movie industry, all feature prominently among repeat customers. They also work with interior designers, decorators and architects, many from out of state, and now have resources in every state to install completed orders.
The Linsons’ eldest daughter, Rebecca, who has been part of the business since childhood, carries out the in-home consultations that are often requested. Seeing the colors and feeling the textures of fabric samples in the environment they are to be a part of can be a gamechanger. “We really don’t want people to make a mistake,” Lupie says, “and we may advise them to go for something quite different, once we see what the job involves.” As an example, she points out that, because of the altitude and year-round sunshine, things fade fast here. “If we’re looking at something to be used outside, or even inside with a lot of sun exposure, we would definitely recommend a fabric that doesn’t fade. We have a special line of those and we even have an outdoor velvet that can be left out in the rain.”
Supplies and parts are also included in their inventory. Zippers cut to any lengths, chains, cords, tassels, braids, books of trims, leather, beads, all types of fastenings, quilting and linings, are all available for sale. They also have a special line of throw rugs, designed by a local artist and they are a designated supplier for Hunter Douglas products. The Linson’s business model is clearly interactive, working with their clients to fulfil their needs and build a relationship in the process. “Every job is different and we’re not interested in just making a sale,” says Lupie. “We want people to feel really good about what they’re getting.”

LIGHTHOUSES SEA STACKS AND A DAIRY LOVER’S DREAM By Debbie Stone
LIGHTHOUSES ARE THE SENTINELS OF THE COASTLINE, visible from miles away. They serve as points of reference for seafaring folks. And for those of us on land, they are highly desirable, photograph-worthy subjects and romanticized symbols. You’d be hard pressed to find travelers to the Oregon Coast who haven’t seen at least one of the dozen or so lighthouses that dot the area. They’re a thing of beauty along this wild and rugged stretch of land. Some are very accessible; others are not, whether due to their location or the fact they are on private land. You can, however, still get up-close to several and learn about their colorful histories, while marveling at their designs and the dramatic views they offer.
Heceta Head Lighthouse
One of my favorites is Cape Meares, located right outside the town of Oceanside. Depending on your perspective, it’s either the shortest lighthouse on the coast or the tallest. Though it’s only 38 feet tall, it sits on a cliff over 200 feet high. Named for Captain John Meares, who was the first to sail into Tillamook Bay, the lighthouse was actually built in Paris and shipped to Oregon in the late 1800s. The panorama from Cape Meares is stunning. And nearby is the trail to the famed Octopus Tree. This botanical wonder is a massive Sitka spruce shaped like an upside-down octopus with branch-like tentacles. Believed to be two-to-three hundred years old, it was possibly shaped by natural forces or by Native Americans. The truth remains a mystery. Heceta Head Lighthouse, near Florence, is another gem and boasts the strongest light on the Oregon Coast. Perched atop a jaw-dropping bluff jutting out into the sea, this historic watchman has been directing ships away from danger since 1894. It’s a striking, picture postcard sight from afar, but with just a little effort, you can walk right up to the lighthouse and stand face-to-face with it. For the full experience, stay in one of the last remaining lightkeeper’s cottages, at the Heceta Head Lighthouse B&B.
View of Heceta Head Lighthouse
The Oregon Coast is also known for its sea stacks; the most famous of which is iconic Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach. This notable formation is the third largest coastal monolith in the world and has been designated a marine and bird sanctuary. The beach itself is also spectacular, with plenty of room to stroll, fly a kite, make a sand castle, or simply doze off to the lulling sound of the waves. And the town, with its galleries, shops and restaurants, is a popular, year-round getaway. Before leaving the coast, I make sure to eat my fill of fish and chips, and clam chowder. Then I always stop at Tillamook Creamery, home of the well-known Tillamook Cheese. Take a self-guided tour (timed reservation tickets necessary) of the factory in its modern barn building, then get some cheese curds and a scoop of ice cream to go. With all the delicious flavors, it can be hard to choose, but I consistently opt for Marionberry Pie. It’s quintessential Oregon!
