Letter from the Editor Chief Running Officer, Eric Lindberg

A NEW MILLENNIUM… FALCON There has been an awakening. Have you felt it? Yes, I get goose bumps too when I watch the trailer for, Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens. It hits theaters in 10 months which seems like such a long time and a galaxy far, far away from now, but I know in the blink of an eye it will be here.

Similar to my anticipation for the return of Han, Chewbacca, Luke and Leia, I see an awakening in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. There are just two short miles between the office and my home in downtown Dallas and, dependent on my tough commute, I pass at least seven huge cranes working on residential, retail and office development projects. If I ditch the car and head out on a run, ride or flight in my X-wing Fighter, those numbers easily double or even triple. In planning races in Fort Worth, Plano or Frisco we see it too; road closures, cranes, bulldozers, construction barricades which all lead us to adjust courses and work with city planners and developers to ensure the safety of our participants. This growth in DFW builds excitement similar to my anticipation of the new Star Wars Film while it also presents challenges as we create unique courses. While always working toward the future and thinking lightyears ahead, this is the time of year to reflect; a learning

“I hope you can take some time, slower than warp speed, to enjoy what’s new in 2015.”

opportunity, for growth. Slowing down to reflect and walk more in the moment was inevitable for me recently. For two reasons, I’ve been doing a lot of walking. The first episode happened during the Dallas Turkey Trot where I experienced my first (and hopefully last) DNF. I was humming along through Deep Ellum and downtown, enjoying what I will call the old school portion of the course, but as I passed by mile 3 and the grassy field where Reunion Arena used to sit, I felt a pop in my calf, like a blaster from a Storm Trooper hit me. I was done and ended up limping back to the car. Hence my first reason for doing a lot of walking as I recover. Reason number two is Han Solo himself. If we are friends on facebook or you received our holiday card then you know Han. A rescue from Paws in the City and a mix of husky and shepherd of some type, this smuggler and captain of the Millennium Falcon has me walking at least three times a day and not just around the block. Like me recovering, he is training to start running so we are putting in 2-4 miles at least once a day. Moving at these different paces has been a bittersweet experience. Trust me, I want to run, fast and far, but I need to heal. What has been amazing beyond building a bond with Han, has been seeing my neighborhood at a different pace. It makes my old routes look new. I have seen beautiful homes that normally in my running zone I wouldn’t or haven’t noticed. I see new construction projects start and finish right before my eyes. I actually talk to neighbors who were once strangers. I experience parks and hike and bike trails, new and old, in a different way. Through all of this active variation, or for me a blend of work and play, I am seeing a true renaissance happening in DFW, from new people to new developments to new hike and bike trails. I hope you can take some time, slower than warp speed, to enjoy what’s new in 2015. May the Force Be With You!

wenty seven years ago, I stood listening to the pre-race chatter at the crowded start line of my first marathon. Behind me, two men were talking about it being their seventh! I was shocked and amazed to hear of any nonprofessional runner doing a marathon more than once in a lifetime. I was there that day just to run one marathon in my life before I turned 30. “One and Done.” Setting short and long term goals has always given Top of Mt Whitney, end structure to my very un-routine of the John Muir Trail life as an international flight attendant. After finishing my first marathon with a positive experience, I wanted to do another. I loved the training. I loved following a schedule that produced results for an attainable goal. After running several more marathons, I started thinking about qualifying for Boston. It took 4 more full marathons but I finally achieved a qualifying time.

Running the big Five Marathon in South Africa

Running Boston was great but, “…NOW what”? One of my closest friends and running buddy suggested we run a marathon in every state. Ahhhhh, another goal! Running and traveling! I soon became seriously committed to combining two of my favorite activities and running 26.2 in every state. It took me about 5 years to complete. Twice,

What was the craziest race you’ve run? A 50 mile race for my 50th birthday! Do you run with music? No music (only if I have to run on a treadmill). And no GPS. Just a watch and my thoughts. By Eric Lindberg t is not often I get to introduce a new column for On Your Left! and man I am so excited! I’m excited because it has to do with food! No this is not an advice column about diet and nutrition. Nothing gluten free here. And we are not restaurant critics either so don’t look for intriguing reviews. This is simply about our favorite places to eat as a sinner or as saint. Sure, by looking at the title, it is only fitting that I get to introduce it too! Let’s face it, we train hard and need rewards to stay motivated. Plus, we need fuel to keep our bodies in tip top shape. All too often, I find myself on the rewards side, and when I’m not training for my next race, I am training for my next cheeseburger and beer. Since I mentioned a cheeseburger and a beer (or two), my favorite sinful reward after a long, hard

week of training is none other than a Maple & Motor cheeseburger, pink all the way, with french fries AND onion rings and an ice cold Shiner draft. I am drooling just thinking about it. This is my sin. Typically the day after a Maple & Motor trip I feel the need to be a saint and nothing is more the opposite of a giant burger than a veggie filled salad. My favorite salad spot is Eatzi’s. My go to is mixed greens with all the veggies, (no bacon is not a veggie), two eggs, pumpkin seeds half a scoop of balsamic vinaigrette and, if I am feeling frisky, I add alfalfa sprouts. Going forward, we are asking our staff to write about their favorite spots too but we also want to hear from you. Each 5K participant packet will also include a long-sleeve, green and black tech tee you’ll be as proud to sport as your favorite jersey! And as long as you’re suiting up, face the opponents with matching eye black so you can keep your eye on having a ball!

The first person credited with using eye black was Andy Farkas of the Washington Redskins. He was photographed with it on in a game against the Philadelphia Eagles in1942. It was thought that players at that time burned cork and smeared the ashes on their cheeks.

BE FAST OR BE LUCKY! If you’re quick enough, the overall male and overall female winner in the 5K will each win one pair of tickets to the College Football Playoff National Championship game at AT&T Stadium on Monday, January 12, 2015. It’s not clear who was the first player to personalize his eye black stickers. But the trend clearly hit the big time with Reggie Bush, who famously adorned his cheekbones with “619” (his home area code) and “S-E” (for his hometown’s southeastern location in San Diego county). Khalil Jones is the only player spotted wearing one of the logos upside-down.

Never Have I Ever...

Put a Spin on Hip-Hop and Yoga → By Jessica Kane

N

ever Have I Ever… tried doing hip-hop and yoga on a bike. Over the last few weeks I have gotten into a new style of cycling that has you spin to the beat of the music, lift weights, and groove to the music while finding inner peace. These indoor cycling classes reboot the mind, body and spirit like the birth child of Spinning and Yoga combined. It’s not about how much resistance you can add to the bike or how fast you can pedal, but about strengthening your body and mind. Another bonus to this style is that you can burn 600900 calories in 45 minutes. This style of spin is based on the Soul Cycle format that began in New York City and Los Angeles and is now popping up all over the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. I tried classes at the newest cycling studio, ZYN22. When you walk into the class, you can feel the beat inside you as participants setup their bikes and weights. Novice or not, the employees and instructors take time to assist everyone with proper setup in order to prevent injuries and to get the full benefit of the workout.

The instructors begin the class with explosive energy while reassuring you of the journey you are about to embark upon in the next 45 minutes. They explain that it’s about connecting to the bike, the music, and the people alongside you. It will be 45 minutes of escape from all of the other things going on in your life or in the world and is focused on you and what you are working for whether it be a fitness goal, relationship goal, career goal, family goal, etc. Once everyone starts getting the feel of it, then the party really begins with a cardio coaster ride of awesome beats that makes you just want to smash it. Along the ride you are taken into various full body workouts while riding, which involve push-ups, crunches, squats, and some time to just groove while on the bike. Plus there is a small break for a killer arm workout. Towards the end of the ride, they give you time to truly reconnect to yourself and reflect. If you are looking for a new cross training program, look into some of the new indoor cycling studios offering this low-impact workout. Shrink your waistline and balance your life.

SWEAT-THERAPY MEET DANCE PARTY

STUDIOS OFFERING THIS STYLE OF INDOOR CYCLING:

As the class begins, you are given time to just connect with the music, the bike, and everyone around you. It is incredible to watch as everyone begins to move as a unit. It’s like watching waves on the beach, peaceful and beautiful to watch, but powerful as well.

TMI: Two Minute Intervals Dallas’ Nicole Studer → By Brandon Gillingham

N

icole Studer is a 32 year old, Baylor Law School graduate who has claimed a Texassized collection of champion medals. We wanted to cross examine her in hopes of uncovering her secret to success.

What are your personal best times/distances? 2014 4th Place Female. Dallas Marathon 12/15 2:57

1st Place Palo Duro 50mi TX 10/18 7:05:14 1st Place: Rocky Raccoon 100mi TX 02/01 15:42:04

What’s the most important component in training for any race distance?

For me, I always want to keep running enjoyable, so it is important to have a good friends to train with. Running with good company makes the miles fly by. I am fortunate to run with the WRRC in Dallas.

What is that one season you always seem to refer back to?

I have been very fortunate to have a great year this year, but I actually had to sit out of one of the biggest races of my season due to injury. Based on my finish at the Rocky Raccoon 100 miler, I qualified for the Western States 100 miler in California. About a month before the race, I developed a calf injury and wasn’t able to make it to the starting line. While I was disappointed to miss out on the race, I feel like I ultimately came back stronger due to this setback.

I am training hard to re-qualify again for Western States this year.

It’s race night and it’s time to go to the hotel now that dinners over; or at least everyone thinks that’s the right thing to do. Some other runners head off to a pool hall or go to a movie to relax. What’s your prerace ritual? I like to watch an inspirational movie. It helps me get mentally prepared to run hard.

Are you into any of the high tech gadgets? GPS? Heart Rate? Ipods? Opinions on any or all? What about lights & other gear? I am definitely a minimalist and am not really into gadgets at all. I do not own a GPS or heart rate monitor. I prefer to base my runs on how I feel and not the time or distance on the watch.

Do you have a favorite meal the night before a race?

I usually eat salmon and vegetables the night before a big race.

What else do you do to stay in shape? Cross training? Weights? Bike? Dance?

I lift weights a couple times per week and take kickboxing classes. Every few weeks I try to take a long bike ride to cross train.

Race Director's Block TAKE NOTHING TO CHANCE! → By Sharon Lindberg and Elizabeth Jones

F

ifty new event planners were looking forward to escaping winter for a few days in late January 2014 by heading to sunny Florida. Old man winter, however, put the squeeze on the orange juice State with a twist of frosty weather. Regardless of frigid temperatures, the spirits of new event planners remained high as they actively set new year goals; to host a running event in their City and fundraise for ZERO – The End of Prostate Cancer.

NEW YEAR, NEW CITIES, NEW EVENT MANAGERS

Each year ZERO brings everyone together for a few days to kick off the year, roll out new plans, recap the previous year, and bring in new urology practices who have decided to host an event in their City. The team at On Your Left! MARKETING & EVENTS attends each year as a partner and educator; we present at the “new event manager boot camp” to get the planners started down the right path to successful event planning, budgeting and marketing. This year hosted the most new faces and their energy and eagerness to get started was refreshing as ever!

O. HENRY! OH TODD!

One face in the group was Todd Pittman – immediately seeing his smile makes a room light up. He hired On Your Left! MARKETING & EVENTS to work alongside him on the event management of his race in Greensboro, North Carolina. Greensboro was home to William Sydney Porter, known to the world as the short story writer O. Henry but after working with Todd, Greensboro is known in our office as the City that did everything right from the start and took nothing to chance all due to his eagerness to learn and apply all the right practices from the starting line.

WHERE IS THE STARTING LINE?

For the new event managers it can be found 12 or more months prior to the date of their event; and the best planners know they can’t go it alone and should hire a team of experts. Great event managers

GREENSBORO, NC WHAT DO WE DO NOW?

As a race director, that can be the best or worst question you get asked at an event. It can mean you are dealing with a crisis, or in the case of Greensboro, perfection. As we rolled into the 6:00 AM hour, at a blustery 28°F and dark, we had nothing to do. We were completely set-up & ready to go, sponsors and vendors in place, registration

equipped to open, DJ jamming, and still an hour to go before any participants were expected to arrive. Todd looked right at me and asked “What do we do now?” I had no answer. “Eat breakfast, I guess” I said, as I walked towards the volunteer check-in tent. As we munched on some donated doughnuts and drank donated coffee under a donated tent, we watched all the Team Leaders and volunteers chatting and dancing — to stay warm. We walked the expo area, said hello to the DJ and emcee, and took photos of the empty start/finish line area. And we patiently waited, race ready, for our runners to start arriving. A few hours later, well before noon, when we were finished cleaning up, saying goodbye to those last racers who hung around to Wobble, and enjoying the sun heating the air to just above freezing, Todd asked me again, “What do we do now?” My answer was simple: “Let’s start planning for 2015! And let’s push back our early morning arrival time next year to 6:30 AM, to give us an extra well-deserved hour of sleep.”

Want to learn more or hire the team at On Your Left! MARKETING & EVENTS? Race to the phone; we’re happy to get you on the right track.

MARKETING // PUBLICITY // SPONSORSHIP

like Todd, always begin with “the end” in mind. What are the steps you need to take to produce a successful event and get people to attend? What is the feel and the theme of the event? What lasting impression do you want to leave on attendees? Getting a running start early reduces the chance of missing a crucial element of putting the event together. Building a capable team and strong communication internally and with all involved in hosting the event is key. We also check the timelines to make sure tasks have been completed. One of the main goals of the January meeting in Orlando is to get planners started early on establishing goals and objectives, and start thinking about “the big four:” marketing promotion, event logistics, sponsorship/fundraising and developing the budget. It’s vital to start “building the buzz” early for next year’s race because planning for an annual running event is a yearround process. Todd took nothing to chance and communicated to our team early on y to establish goals, tasks and what to execute throughout the year. His race event was the last in the series and took place in November; and really was flawless.

GADGETS, GEAR AND UNSOLICITED ADVICE → DRIVE FOR GOOD!

H

appy New Year! It is time for new beginnings, new adventures and new goals. I’m kicking off 2015 in search of a new ride to cruise me through new journeys and escapades. It’s always exciting to get a new car but the research and test drives are a bit daunting. But I’m up for the quest! Where did I start? Google of course! I searched, “Cars for Athletes” hoping to “get lucky” in my search for the car to fit my active lifestyle. The first hit of the search lead me to cars.com and a page titled, “top picks for weekend athletes”. I am not an athlete only on the weekends but what the heck, let’s read up! The website offers selection preferences to better steer my search; I can choose features such as MPG, navigation system and heated seats. A slew of cars pop up; everything from Acura’s, BMW, Audis to Hyundai and GMC’s. Fail. U-Turn back to my Google search and scroll further down through the results. It gives me articles about professional athletes, cars that athletes choose, etc. I don’t find these particularly helpful until AH HA! An article titled, “Mama Needs a New Set of Wheels: Best Cars for Recreational Athletes” on an aptly named blog called, “Shut Up + Run”. Albeit a couple of years old, this review highlights several cars I’ve researched and found to be on

the top 10 list for my active life. It’s a decision not to be made in haste as I will drive this vehicle into 2025! Dutifully, I keep researching for countless more hours, navigating through numerous lists in search for the perfect set of wheels. The brand which stands out in my search is Mazda. Why Mazda? Because of its “Drive for Good Campaign”. Purely philanthropic, purely easy to understand and I really like the way they are activating a consumer driven promotion while also giving back to charities. Genius! The 2nd annual Mazda Drive for Good is a partnership with NBCUniversal. According to their news release in October 2014, “Mazda has partnered with NBCUniversal to help expand the reach of the Mazda Drive for Good campaign across the company’s portfolio and ultimately serve one lucky community in need of charitable assistance.” “Mazda Drive for Good started as an idea, a way to bring together the good things Mazda, its employees, its dealers and its business partners were doing in their local community,” explained Jim O’Sullivan, president and CEO, MNAO. “From there it grew into a way for Mazda to reach new heights in charitable giving, whether monetarily or through volunteer service. Mazda is honored to expand our

idea and we’re happy to activate and manage it for the right brand that’s looking for a fresh, new consumer driving promotion in the running space in 2015. Trust me, it’s an awesome promotion; call me to find out more! If your company is looking for additional opportunities through 2015, our events are in need of volunteers too. In fact, this month we’re still looking for a few extra folks to help out at the Extra Yard 5K which is part of the College Football Playoff National Championship. If you can’t find the time in January, we have events almost every month in 2015 in which you can join and give back to your local community and charities. I think I’ll head out now and go test drive a Mazda! The local charity is Make A Wish North Texas. Move forward into new running and driving adventures in 2015! – Sharon Lindberg

efforts further by partnering with NBCUniversal and helping a community that needs an extra hand to achieve its goal.” This year Mazda announced that it will increase its monetary donation from $100 to $150 per new Mazda sold or leased between November 21, 2014 and January 2, 2015. They are differentiating themselves from other brands by pledging one hour of charitable service for every test drive of a new Mazda throughout this same time period. In addition, Mazda is working to assist four national charities and 42 local charities. Plus, all of the volunteer hours that will be donated are just a fantastic way to extend the partnership. Here at On Your Left! MARKETING & EVENTS, all of our events give to charities and we work with sponsors, brands and clients each day who want to assist them with activation ideas through our races. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to work with you on your brand activation and strategy in 2015. And just like Mazda, we can come up with something that gives back too! Four years ago, we pitched a regional promotion between a car dealership/brand and a popular running shoe brand that was very proactive, creative and accomplished many of the goals that Mazda is now doing. I can’t give you all the specifics because the shoe brand never activated on our

Doc in the Box MY NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION: REST

W

hat is one of my New Year’s resolutions? A lot of people have resolutions that involve exercising (like to do it!) or to be more productive in some way (meet deadline this month!). I exercise a comfortable, healthy amount, and I certainly don’t need more productivity in my life. Therefore, one of my New Year’s resolution is to rest more. I was inspired to consider rest as an option when I read Bonnie Gray’s Finding Spiritual Whitespace: Awakening Your Soul to Rest. She sings it beautifully: “Whitespace is a space on a page or art or ad absent of marks, colors, words, or images… Whitespace allows a place for the eye to rest… Whitespace is anything but nothing… It is the breathing room the viewer needs in order to experience what’s being presented and find meaning in it.” Rest to me is not a substitute for sleep, but it is still a necessity. When we sleep we pass through three stages of non-REM sleep and then enter the dreamy REM sleep. A complete cycle may last 90-100 minutes. In stage 1 our eyes close, but we can wake up easily. When we enter a light

sleep stage 2 sleep, our heart rate slows and our body temperature drops as our body preps for deep sleep. In stage 3 sleep we are in a deep sleep. When we wake in stage 3, we feel disoriented for a few minutes. Enter REM where our brain actually becomes more active, our heart rate and breathing quicken. Then it starts all over. Our minds, our emotions, our spirits are generally on full and rapid fire; even as we sleep our unconscious mind is churning solutions and feelings and manifest our dreams. Sleep, as we all know, is sometimes not very restful. For me, rest is done while I am awake, when I am conscious of all that is within that needs to settle. I plan to turn off the computer and Facebook, to drive myself to a quiet place, to walk, or to call a friend and just listen to her without a need to share my own stories. To rest is to breathe deep and to release worries, to-do lists, schedules, and decision making. To rest is the ultimate peace.

Are we designed to rest?

Our Creator actually commands us to rest. Right up there with “Thou shall not murder” is the fourth and often forgotten commandment to rest.

DOC IN THE BOX, CONT. It is crystal clear in Exodus 20:8 “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy… six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day… you shall not do any work.” Matthew Sleeth, M.D. releases my guilt of craving rest when he writes in 24/6: A Prescription for a Healthier, Happier Life, “Up to this point, everything has been created out of nothing, but on the seventh day, God makes nothing out of something. Rest is brought into being.” So, yes, I do believe we are designed to work and we are designed to rest.

“Things can quickly get sticky and snap and become seemingly impossible to scrape new, but there is a cure: it is rest.”

What will happen if we don’t rest?

If we do not rest, something will blow up — literally, our happiness, our health, our jobs, our relationships will be stretched like the uninvited pink goo of bubblegum on the bottom of our shoe from the minute we catch it and step off. Things can quickly get sticky and snap and become seemingly impossible to scrape new, but there is a cure: it is rest. I love how Dr. Richard Swenson redefines rest as “margin.” In A Minute of Margin: Restoring Balance to our Busy Lives he breathes this on the page: “Margin is like oxygen — everybody needs some. If we have too little, we suffer from shortage. If we have too much, the excess will not benefit us additionally. But having the right 2 amount permits us to breathe freely. Margin is a space, specifically the space between our load and our limits.” Where is your space?

Should we ever rest from exercise/ running? Yes, of course? Rest is beneficial to your workout schedule! You should rest once a week. Either take a day off completely or run for 20-30 minutes below your 60% max heart rate. This will help prevent overuse injuries, restore your energy stores, and prevent mental burnout from running. Once a week, run or workout not to exercise, but to have fun! Active.com quotes that most coaches and elite athletes say after a 5K training cycle, you should take a week off. After a 10K or half marathon, take off 7-10 days. And after the big kahuna marathon, rest for two weeks. It’s ok. Go on. Rest. Restore. Release. Find margin.

PLEASE NOTE: The info in this article is not a substitute for medical advice from your own physician. Dr. Johnson and OYL! are not responsible for telling you when you’ve reached your limits. Resolve with me in the Happy, Newer Year to discover margin and to awaken your soul to rest.

Jaunt Junkie CAUTION: RUNNING WITH A HANGOVER → By Jessica Kane

A

h…the long awaited Thanksgiving break appeared. The holiday that kicks off the rest of the holiday festivities and holiday breaks had finally arrived. I was spending it in Las Vegas with the boyfriend and his family — for five days! (Yes, let that soak in, because everyone had told me that three days was enough.) In an effort not to go broke or invest too heavily in libations for five full days, my boyfriend and I decided to sign up for the Las Vegas Turkey Trot; a 12K through six tunnels leading up to the Hoover Dam. We always wanted to see the Hoover Dam and what better way to see it then take a scenic run to this national monument. The event started behind Hacienda Resort and Casino at Lake Mead Park (about 30 minutes away from the Vegas Strip) and went along Lake Mead. The trail was about 6 ft.

wide, entirely gravel with some large rocks interspersed, and a steep, several hundred foot drop covered in boulders along both sides of the trail. Each tunnel was no more than 500 ft. long, pitch black with that little cliché light shining from the other end. My slight fear of the dark along with my overactive imagination increased my pace during this portion of the course. Once through the tunnels, the trails weaved through mountains and the power systems as we got closer to the Dam and our turnaround point. Then, the magnificence of the Hoover Dam takes all remaining labored breaths away. All prior thoughts about aches and pains, all complaints over the rocky terrain disappear. At this point, you really get to appreciate the architecture and wonder of the structure, plus the design of the Memorial Bridge that overlooks the Dam. On the way back, however, all our thoughts of the aches and pains and complaining returned, but we are not trail runners. Those who are might appreciate the terrain more than we did. Trail runner or not, it is still a trail I recommend to take a scenic walk or run on while in Vegas. It may seem crazy, but it was a couple of hours that allowed us to regroup, find ourselves again, and appreciate the magnificence of the Hoover Dam and nature during the hustle and bustle of Las Vegas. While what happened in Vegas stays in Vegas, such things just outside of Sin City should be shared!

LEADING LAUREN ROEPKEN → By Abigail Werner

I

don’t know many marathon runners. But when I meet one, it’s such a big deal to me. How could it not be? They run over 26 miles at a time! Last October, the Student Ministries Program Coordinator at my church*, Lauren Roepken, ran in the Chicago Marathon. I recently interviewed her and found out what she loves about running.

Some background information on Lauren (from my point of view)

Lauren is 22 years old and is one of the best people you may ever meet. She’s very energetic and fun to be around. When she gives the lesson at church, you can’t help but listen. Lauren started running in August 2013, to help raise money for the Zoe Ministry at our church. Our pastor, Pastor Mike, developed a running club that raised money for the 1,094 orphans in Rwanda and 174 orphans in Zimbabwe our church supports.

“If I run by myself I’m more likely to quit, but if I run in a group, we tend to have lots of silly conversations that make the time pass more quickly.”

How she got to Chicago

Lauren didn’t always want to run a marathon and only entered the lottery for the Chicago Marathon on an impulse, not really expecting to be picked. When she received confirmation of her entry, she

was less than thrilled. Though the support of a few of her friends who were also running, however, she decided to stick with it. She claims she’s very glad that she decided to do it, because it was so rewarding. “Finishing the marathon actually wasn’t the hardest part,” she explains, “all of the training was. But knowing I worked so hard, and all of that work paid off was incredible.”

What keeps her Going

Roepken prefers running with a group of friends instead of by herself. “If I run by myself I’m more likely to quit, but if I run in a group, we tend to have lots of silly conversations that make the time pass more quickly.” When she does have to run alone,

she enjoys listening to today’s pop hits or inspirational Christian music. Even though she’s already run a marathon, she’s decided to run another, this time with her family. Her parents have always been really into running and it’s a great way to spend time with them.

Her inspirations: Mom and Deena Kastor.

What continues to inspire her are the orphans she met on her mission trip to Rwanda in 2012. “The kids would walk 20 miles just to come meet us and bring us gifts.” Lauren says, “If they can walk that on a daily basis, why can’t I run that?” Not all of her races raise funds toward that cause, but it never fails to motivate her. I’ve met so many people that run for so many different reasons. Whether it’s for health, for fun, or to raise money for a good cause, there’s no wrong answer. So far though, why Lauren runs has been my favorite. In this new year, I hope everyone finds a reason to run or do something active because, as you can see, the effects can be quite extraordinary. *First United Methodist Church in Mansfield
