S

pring training is here and opening day is just a few short weeks away! I love baseball and am a lifelong Chicago White Sox fan. As a kid, I would watch them on FOX, channel 32. The first slogan I remember was White Sox Fever, Catch It. My Great Aunt Edna lived in Sarasota, Florida where the Sox used to go for Spring Training and during one of our winter time visits we got to go. It was awesome. I even kept the popcorn box and program autographed by the team including Harold Baines. Today, it is framed and hanging in my sports room in our house. I am a pretty big fan and I love my team through the good times and the bad; through the winning ugly years to Batman and Robin to 2005 when we won the World Series for the first time in a 100 years to today’s team which boasts rookie of the year, Jose Abreau. These days, in the case of the Sox, we’ve been through more of the bad as we can’t seem to put a consistent winning team on the field. Prior to the recent Super Bowl, I saw an interesting stat. Of the 49 games played, which means 98 teams have made it, 24 of them were either the Cowboys, Steelers or Patriots. To put into perspective, that means roughly 25% of the time the same 10% of the league had been playing in the Super Bowl. Tying that back into baseball, take the New York Yankees and the Chicago Cubs. Both teams have super loyal followings,

both teams have a lot of money, both teams have incredible history, but one team hasn’t won — let alone been to the World Series in over a 100 years, while the other has won it 26 times. This is not only commonly seen in sports because I also see it in business. Take Target and JC “The Cuban Comet” and “Mr. White Sox,” Penney for example. As Nov. 29, 1925 – March 1, 2015. a kid growing up in the 70’s, one was made fun of if one got their clothes at Target. Nowadays, however, Target is one of the trendiest places to shop. All the cool, fresh, young and hip brands all want to be on their shelves. The opposite can be said about Penneys. Heck, I couldn’t even tell you the last time I walked through one of their stores. Point is, why do certain brands, on what seem to be equal playing fields, continually succeed over their competition? Is it leadership? Is it talent? Is it payroll? Is it luck? I feel the biggest thing is team chemistry. It is why the Mavs only won one title, the Sox only one title. They weren’t the most talented teams in their respective leagues, but they played the best as a team at those particular moments. When managers/ leaders/owners fail to recognize the same principles, is the season the wheels start to fall off. At OYL! We strive for great chemistry internally amongst our staff and externally amongst our clients. As a team, we are at our best when we are working on a project together, with a clear directive, defined roles and responsibilities, a solutionsbased mindset, and the motivation to go beyond our clients’ expectations. The only difference between us and a championship team is that YOU get to take home the trophy!

Congrats on winning the Philadelphia Marathon’s Rotham 8k in November. How did you feel about racing that distance, with such a competitive field around you?

JIM ¹ Thanks! I was happy to come away with the win. I came into Rothman unsure of who would be in the race but expecting it to be a strong field based on past results. I have experience racing the 8k distance from cross country in college so

What was your race specialty in college?

JIM ¹ College racing is nice because it allows you to focus on a variety of distances between the three seasons. In cross country we raced 8k for most of the season before bumping that up to 10k for regionals and NCAAs. In track, I focused on mostly the mile and 3k indoors and 5k outdoors for my first three years before shifting that focus a bit to 3k/5k indoors and 10k outdoors in my final season.

Do you have plans on moving up in race distance?

JIM ¹ Since college ended, I’ve raced a few longer races including the U.S. 12k Championships in November and the U.S. Cross Country Championships this past weekend which was also a 12k. I haven’t solidified my race plans for the upcoming months yet, but there’s a good chance I’ll do at least one longer road race this year. I’ll

probably end up racing at least a half-marathon eventually. I’m enjoying the gradual shift to longer distances post-college.

What is the hardest component (for you) in training for a race? i.e.: Long runs, longer tempo’s, recovery, long miles, recovery from races… JIM ¹ One aspect of training that has taken me a bit of time to adjust to is the higher volume workouts that I’ve moved towards since I finished college. In my prep for the 12k in the fall along with this winter as I rebuild a base, most of my workouts total over 6 miles of quality running, which was rarely the case when I was in college. I believe the adjustment has gone well, though at times an eight mile tempo run or a 45 minute fartlek can be a bit of a struggle to get through mentally. That said, I feel that these workouts have benefitted me immensely and I feel much stronger than in the past.

What are you currently training for?

JIM ¹ My training is geared towards running a good 5k and 10k on the track this outdoor season, though my next race will most likely be the Gate River Run 15k in March. I’m still in the base phase of my training, but will be adding more quality in the next few weeks. → CONTINUED

the distance was familiar. I had spent most of the fall preparing for the U.S. 12k Championships the previous weekend so if anything the distance felt a bit short after racing 7.5 miles. The pace at Rothman was a bit slow from the start; I ended up taking the lead a bit after the three mile mark in an attempt to string out the pack. A few of the guys who were up there fell back and I was able to have a solid kick the last 400 meters.


TMI: TWO MINUTE INTERVALS What is that one season or year you always seem to refer back to as “the perfect season”?

JIM ¹ I’m still searching for the “perfect season”, as I’m sure many other runners are. I’m definitely proud of some seasons or individual races I’ve had, but I’m not completely satisfied with any one season in its entirety. There have definitely been a number of setbacks in my career, mostly through slight mental hiccups and the obvious bad races. I’m definitely happy with how I’ve managed to overcome some rough mental patches and feel that my past experiences have left me more prepared for the future, not only in running but also in life.

It’s race night and it’s time to go to the hotel now that dinners over; or at least everyone thinks that’s the right thing to do. Some other runners head off to a pool hall or go to a movie to relax. What’s your pre-race ritual? What relaxes you the night before a race?

JIM ¹ I usually end up just laying low at the hotel or wherever I’m staying the night before the race. In college, it was nice to have teammates to hang out with and generally distract me from the next day’s competition. Now that I’m traveling to most races alone, I usually just watch the news or read, something to think about other than running. It’s always nice to have some human company as well if possible, whether from a friend, my girlfriend, or my parents.

What motivates you on race morning? (A favorite song, seeing someone, reading, hitting Ryan with a pillow, etc.)

JIM ¹ I’ve never really found any motivation other than the goals that I have set for that day’s race. At that point, I’ve already formed my goals and expectations for the race and am just trying to remain calm and relaxed beforehand.

Do you have a favorite snack the night before a race?

JIM ¹ I usually try to eat pasta of some sort the night before a race. I also always have a loaf of bread and peanut butter with me; I make PB sandwiches to fill in any gaps between meals. I definitely try to eat a good amount the day before races.

What do you reward yourself with after a good workout or race?

JIM ¹ After a good workout or race, I definitely look forward to plenty of time sitting on the couch and a huge meal of some sort. I usually make relatively healthy post-workout meals at home, though the quality wanes when I end up eating at a restaurant when I’m traveling for a race. ne phrase we can always count on around DFW is, “Crazy Texas weather!” As usual, we’ve gone from Christmas shopping in 80 degree temps to being iced over in “Thundersleet” for the morning then back into running shorts by afternoon. Regardless, another thing people around these parts can also count on is a huge turnout and a first class 5K event sponsored by Central Market-Plano; the Thrill of the Grill 5K in great spring weather. F

or a mere beer and free banana, the pop/rock band, Treble Hook, may (or may not) give the Meghan Trainor hit a go — just don’t expect the same curves and luscious golden locks from lead vocalist, Dave Corely. Described in the nightclub circle as, “an action-packed cover band powerhouse”, we label Treble Hook as an active lifestyle partner in crime (we have once received a noise complaint) as they’ve also struck a harmonious chord among the DFW running community. This month, we’d like to sing praises to Dave Corely (guitar/ vocals), Hurshel Burton (bass/vocals), and Justin Krause (drums), for their continued dedication to keeping our participants movin’ and shakin.’ Most recently, they rocked Klyde Warren Park for a recordbreaking number of 4th Annual Form Follows Fitness 5K runners and walkers. In the past, they’ve also traded mosh-pits for mud-pits by performing at our Gladiator Rock N’ Run social along the KATY Trail, have changed their KISS costumes for mariachi suits at White Rock Lake as we promoted Cinco de Miler, and ignited the stage for Thrill of the Grill 5K attendees for hours. “It’s great being outside in these fun environments with such positive and motivated people.” Corely tells us, “The people there are always so intoxicating, vs our nighttime crowd just being intoxicated.” Admittedly not a morning person, Corely says,

“There’s nothing like doing a club gig at night, getting home around 4am and then turning around to load in for a road race at 6am. We are a glutton for punishment. MARCHING STEPS FROM THE NATIONS’ CAPITOL → By Sharon LIndberg

O

ut the airplane window, a cherry red sunrise has me eager to land in warm, sunny Orlando, Florida; I open the Southwest Magazine and flip through the articles and am inspired by an ad for Washington D.C. The ad takes me back to one year ago. Each year, our company attends the annual ZERO – The End of Prostate Cancer conference. It is always a great kick off to get inspired for the upcoming year to fundraise for prostate cancer and men’s wellness. Precisely one year ago, following this same conference for which I’m traveling now, we went to visit our client ZERO - The End of Prostate Cancer at their offices where they are based in Alexandria, VA. During that trip, I was also lucky enough to set up home for a couple of nights where a good friend of mine works, (she is also a runner), at the Mandarin Oriental hotel in Washington, D.C. It was so exciting to pull up to this neighborhood of Washington D.C. amidst the White House, the Capitol, and The Washington Monument. Nearby, a wide, beautiful green-space lined by Cherry Blossoms, referred to as “The Mall, offers a runner-friendly crushed granite path and pedestrian friendly sidewalks. It was a cool day in March — about 40 degrees, and at the end of the day, the rain retired. I was

eager to get into my running shoes and running gear and head out to see everything up close and personal. Often when I travel, running the streets is my ultimate favorite way to see a City I’m visiting and to truly get a taste for the locals. Millions of visitors come each year to visit the museums and monuments, to walk the historic steps where Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his, “I Have A Dream” speech to hundreds of thousands who marched, and where protestors opposed the Vietnam War during the turbulent 1960s, where on October 11, 1987, the Aids Memorial Quilt was displayed for the first time during the National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. My run was about 4.30 miles from the hotel, but there are routes up to 6 miles around The Mall as well as additional trails and surrounding parks which can keep you going many more miles. If you ever find yourself in our Nation’s capital, I urge you to go down and run The Mall. Not only is it scenically beautiful, but you’ll be inspired as you explore this power hub of activity too.

With the sun ¹ peeking out more, sunscreen is becoming a routine again. Is there really a difference in SPF numbers? I’ve heard anything above 35 SPF doesn’t protect you any more than 35.

ANSWER ¹ Sun Protection Factor or SPF is a measure of ultraviolet light protection from the sun. A quick way to think about SPF is to put on your math hat and think of SPF x 10 is the number of minutes you can spend in the sun before you burn to a ruby red color. An SPF of 15 blocks about 93% of UVB, an SPF of 30 blocks 97%, and an SPF of 50 blocks 98%. An SPF of at least 30 is recommended, but regardless of which SPF you choose, wear it every single day, not just in the spring and summer, buy an SPF that protects against UVA and UVB rays,

apply a shot glass size amount to your whole body, and reapply it every two hours and whenever you get out of the water. You should be buying a new bottle of sunscreen at least once a year simply because you run out of it; if you don’t need a new bottle every year, you are not applying it often enough. Sunscreens also expire, so check the date! Wearing sunscreen, sun protective clothing, and sun protective sunglasses helps to protect you from premature aging, wrinkles, sunspots, skin cancer, cataracts, and macular degeneration. Try to avoid the sun between 10am and 4 pm, avoid sun lamps and tanning beds, and avoid surfaces that reflect light like water, sand, and white snow!

I’ve had a cold for about two weeks with congestion in my nasal passages. Do you have any homemade natural remedies to clear this up? I am not a huge fan of OTC meds.

What does it look like?” (I love mucous! Haha!) Answers to these questions and more helps me to narrow down a diagnosis. Any nasal congestion, especially with other symptoms, lasting for over one week should certainly be evaluated by a doctor (unless it is allergy season, you have no fever, and you just know from experience these are your usual allergy symptoms). As far as natural remedies, the old myth “feed a fever, starve a cold” is bad advice. You should feed both with plenty of fluids and your usual healthy meals. Some believe in taking an oral combo of vitamin C, echinacea, and zinc, but there are no good double-blind studies to support that this does a lick of good. It doesn’t hurt any, but from patient experience over the years, it seems it might only make a difference in shortening the duration of a cold if you take it as soon as the cold symptoms start. You can also try a Neti pot or saline drops to flush your sinuses to relieve sinus pressure, facial pain, and nasal congestion. According to webmd. com research does back up these claims, “... finding that nasal irrigation can be an effective way to relieve sinus symptoms when used along with standard sinus treatments. For some people, nasal irrigation may bring relief of sinus symptoms without the use of medications.” [If you use a Neti pot, use 16 ounces of distilled or sterile water (only!) along with one teaspoon of salt. And for

gosh sakes, wash the irrigation device thoroughly when you finish!] Grandma may have been on to something when she tried to shove the chicken noodle soup down our throat. Inhaling the steam will calm down the congestion; soup is hydrating, and chicken soup may even help inflammation. It’s an endless cycle of sleeping, eating and working. In this cycle of life, I find as much time for play as possible but, if I’m being honest, it seems more than half of those play times revolve around the table. I gather with friends and fill my body with flavors and conversation. I think we can all agree on this truth to life; it’s a series of choices with consequences. Wouldn’t it be pretty cool if we could just eat, feel good and enjoy delicious food with the only consequences being happy taste buds? So many of us have this mentality that we are awful if we don’t eat healthy or exercise, and we make our eating out to be this performance game of “I did good”, or “I did bad”. We work ourselves into these unhealthy frenzies and, for many people, it becomes a source of anxiety. I must do “this” and restrict “this”, so I can earn “this” and if I did “this”, then I must do “this” because I’ll feel like “this”.

If I am constantly living in a restrictive lifestyle, denying myself the lovely flavors of life I enjoy, I’ll crave the junk I can’t have and deem it as rewards, hence the premise of this column. It’s an ongoing vicious cycle of extremes in our culture of either checking out completely or checking in extremely, that I personally wish more people had freedom from, and found the balance in, including myself. The reality is that we are creatures of habit with strong cravings, and I’ll be first to admit that, from time to time, I host my own Man vs. Food show. When I cave in and check out to my unhealthy extreme it’s the smell of 12 boneless wings in Hawaiian and Mango Habanero flavorings, a side of ranch and an order of sweet and salty fries. (I’m salivating right now just typing it). Recently, however, I bought a Paleo cook book. I craved to learn more about this dietary lifestyle that my incredible, beautiful, and intelligent girlfriend, Katelyn, has adopted. It makes sense to me that eating simple foods would certainly be both beneficial for your health and would keep ones taste buds

entertained. Seeing so many simple food items inside it (many I’ve never heard of) excites my taste buds to go on the adventure. Eating shouldn’t leave us feeling shamed or praised. It’s essential to our survival; we need fuel, so we can live a life of fullness and joy, but eating should be fun and there should be plenty of options that taste great and keep you feeling sharp. I am encouraged by this in-between lifestyle that doesn’t steal the joy of yummy flavors. Still, even our most saintly decisions don’t come without minor consequence. For Katelyn, it’s been the time it takes gathering and preparing the food, but since she takes joy in it and she adopted it as a hobby, it just adds an additional perk to meal time. I admire her for the freedom and balance in which she embraces with food; a beautiful garnish to a consistent and balanced lifestyle. I’ve really enjoyed the paleo meals so far and would be open to the lifestyle, however, I personally find it tough to set aside the time to gather and prepare food for the week. With that being said, my go-to place is HG Supply Co. Here, not only can one enjoy awesome rooftop dining with a skyline view of Dallas, but they also offer the most paleo-friendly menu in town (with the only consequence being a ding to the wallet). I recommend the flavorful Texas Steak Bowl with all-natural sirloin, jalapeño red flannel hash, sunny side up vital farms egg, guacamole & grilled Texas tomato with lemon, olive oil & chives. Eating healthy is not just chomping on a salad every meal and foregoing meat. It’s all about cooking up good balance, consistent decisions, and enjoying the cycle.

MATCHA GREEN TEA BROWNIES/GREENIES → By Gisellawsum

½ cup butter, melted ¼ cup matcha powder 40g white chocolate 1 cup granulated sugar ¼ tsp salt 2 eggs ½ tsp vanilla extract ½ cup all purpose flour

1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius. Line an 8×8-inch square baking dish with parchment paper. 2. Melt the butter in a microwave/saucepan. 3. Melt the white chocolate. (It’s better to use bain marie, but if you want to microwave it, it’s technically okay but you need to do it in 10-15 seconds blast (slow but frequent) or the white chocolate would be irreversibly crumbly and won’t melt. 4. Add the matcha powder and stir till smooth. 5. Stir in sugar, salt, eggs and vanilla extract. 6. Add flour and stir until well combined. 7. Spread batter into the prepared pan. 8. Bake for 30 minutes. The edges should be set and center is firm but still just slightly underdone. A toothpick should come out with a few moist crumbs attached. Let cool 10 minutes before lifting out by parchment overhang to slice into squares. Do you listen to music while you run? What kind? MARK ¹ I only listen to music about 25% of the time, and when I do, I listen to fast paced music. Music can often affect my pace, and I don’t want it to slow down.

What is your favorite part of track meets?

MARK ¹ Probably finishing my race and seeing if my time improved or not and cheering on my friends. They support me, so I like to support them. What’d I say? Short and sweet. Even though Mark didn’t really say much I did feel like I got to know him a bit better. He seems to know that he’s not the best, but he is not going to let that stop him from trying his hardest. He’s passionate and he gives 100% to everything he does, which is why I’ve come to admire him.
