Ladies and Gentlemen, runners and walkers, Angels and Charlies. I have an important announcement. DFWRUNS is now very involved with knockers and knackers.

As you know, DFWRUNS recently added the Juggernaut series to its client roster. This amazing new mud run series is in partnership with Susan G. Komen for the Cure® and helps raise awareness and funds for the fight against breast cancer. We have five events planned for them by the end of this year, and ten for 2013.

As we begin our march into September, which is National Prostate Cancer Awareness month, I see the DFWRUNS schedule filled with events that are benefitting ZERO — The End of Prostate Cancer. Our client relationship with this tremendous organization continues to grow, year in and year REGISTER NOW! out. DFWRUNS now assists in the operations or marketing of six of their events — this month alone.

Like Susan G. Komen for the Cure® and their approach in the fight against breast cancer, ZERO is working on making prostate cancer a “cool” cause to support. It is very challenging as the prostate gland is not something you can see, as well, it is in a pretty uncomfortable spot to reach. You men over 40 know what I am talking about!

So as we work on the Great Prostate Cancer Challenge events over the month of September we are testing various promotions around the country, including: • Save the Males social runs with the Blue Mile running store in Indianapolis • A mini football combine in conjunction with Michael Johnson Performance in Arlington TX

As always, we welcome and value your thoughts. Help us get creative and send us any tips that you think will help us grow the Great Prostate Cancer Challenge series.

One of the amazing things that Komen has been able to do, whether planned or not, has been the ability to empower, engage and energize people to support its cause. I’m sure I am not the only one who gets invited to various fundraisers for Race for the Cure and 3-Day Walk teams. What amazes me the most about these fundraisers is not only the creativity behind the events, but the sheer numbers of attendees that they generate. We want to draw out that same passion in runners who are anxious to see an end to prostate cancer. Participating in the Great Prostate Cancer Challenge series helps us do just that.

s I was scrolling through my playlists in preparation for my marathon training, I came across some oldies but goodies.

Otis Redding sang it like this:

I was born by the river (the Trinity?), oh my In this little old tent, (a EZ-up 10X10 promotional tent?)

Oh, and just like this river I’ve been RUNNIN’ ever since!

It’s been a long, long time comin’ But I know, A change has gotta come!

Good news Otis! A change IS gonna come! The autumnal equinox occurs on September 22! What does this mean? It means a change in the weather. It will officially mark the first day of fall and for runners in the Dallas/Fort Worth area it means the start of a cool race season! While runners and walkers, cyclists, crossfitters, volleyball players and all our other active peeps in Texas watch their training accelerate like a welcomed breeze, we at DFWRUNS are heating up the fall like the gas flame of a hot-air balloon! An equinox occurs only twice a year (March and September) when the Earth sits straight on its axis placing the center of the Sun in alignment with the equator.

aybe your job isn’t as awesome as ours. Maybe you can’t literally run at work. But you CAN REGISTER TO RUN while you’re AT WORK! RUN@WORK Day is a national promotion presented by the Road Runners Club of America. The goal of RUN@WORK Day is to encourage adults to get 30-minutes of exercise each day, in accordance with the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, either before work, during lunch, or immediately following work. RUN@ WORK Day also encourages companies to help employees schedule time for physical activity.

DFWRUNS will be running all over the place during the work day on Sept. 21. Our Angels and Bosleys will be in Arlington, TX, Camden, NJ, Minneapolis and Indianapolis operating our Great Prostate Cancer Challenge and Dash for Dad races taking place the next day. But don’t worry, we’ll all fly up up UP and away back to Plano, TX in plenty of time to run the show at 2nd Annual Plano Balloon Festival Half Marathon, 5K &1K on Sept. 23 too!

Regardless of our travels, DFWRUNS still wants to be a strong force in demonstrating the importance of daily physical activity by participating in the 7th Annual RUN@WORK Day. A

s marathon season beefs up, so do training schedules. With more running hours and miles logged, there is risk for injury. Accidents do happen! Just ask the young boy I saw this past week. He was leaning against a towel rack; the rack broke, and he fell forward with both arms out to catch his fall. Both of his wrists hurt, so his mom brought him in to see me. We took x-rays, and the poor kid broke not one, but both wrists!

He walked out of my office with a long splint on each arm and two slings wrapped around him to hold his arms up...less than one week before school (and his basketball practice) started. Big bummer!

The best way to treat any injury is of course, to prevent one.

For runners, that means running on safe well-lit trails, wearing proper footwear and running gear, lathering up with sunscreen, and paying attention to what is around you, especially your running surface. On new trails and long runs, let someone else know where you are going, what path you plan to take, and about how long you will be gone. Pack water and snacks.

Warm up with a five minute walk, then stretch. Strength and cross train to help prevent overuse injuries. Lastly, listen to your body! A little soreness is normal, but not pain!

Even the best prepared athlete, however, may still get a boo-boo from time to time. Here is a list of common runners’ injuries and first aid suggestions:

PLANTAR FASCIITIS Pain in heel or along bottom of foot. Recovery may take three months to a year!

Do calf stretches, rest, ice bottom of foot by rolling foot over a frozen water bottle, do pool-running or swimming.

ACHILLES TENDONITIS Pain and stiffness where your calf muscle attaches to your heel. This is not an injury to run through. Take a few days off, ice every 4-6 hours, do calf stretches, pool-run, swim, or use elliptical.

RUNNER’S KNEE Irritation of the undersurface of the kneecap. Take a few extra days of rest, decrease your mileage and hills, bike or swim instead.

SHIN SPLINTS AND STRESS FRACTURES Stress fractures require 8-16 weeks of no running; swim or pool-run with no impact exercises! For shin splints, ice, rest, do stretches, wear an air-cast ankle splint, then slowly return to activity after several weeks of healing using the 10% rule (no more than a 10% increase per week on mileage).

ITBS, ILIOTIBIAL BAND SYNDROME Pain along the outside of your knee. Decrease the amount of exercise. Apply heat and stretch before you run, and apply ice after. Swim, pool-run, use an elliptical machine, strengthen hip abductors with side leg lifts or one-legged squats.

MUSCLE STRAINS AND PULLS Treat with RICE (rest, ice, compression with an ace wrap, and elevation). Try acetaminophen or ibuprofen as directed on the package if you need a pain reliever. (That is true for any of these injuries.)

HYPOTHERMIA AND FROSTBITE Avoid cold-related illnesses by wearing proper gear. I remember a quote somewhere along the way that stated that there is no bad weather, only bad clothes! If your teeth are chattering, fingers or toes are numb or turning colors, get home, get

out of your wet clothes, get in a room-temperature bath, and drink a warm beverage.

ABRASIONS AND WOUNDS Wash gently with warm soapy water. Apply an antibiotic ointment, and monitor for signs of infection such as redness, increased warmth, more tenderness than you would expect, yucky-looking drainage, or a fever. Make sure you are up to date on your tetanus vaccination. (Generally less than ten years is acceptable, but if you have a big, dirty, open wound, or a puncture from a rusty nail, the rule is every five years instead.)

BLISTERS Don’t pop ’em! Wash with warm, soapy water, apply ointment, and band-aid. Let nature take its course. If the blister pops, continue the same treatment and watch for signs of infection.

Generally, most injuries can be prevented by being smart and being proactive (so you don’t have to be reactive). You don’t have to have an injury in order to get better!

Arm yourself with prevention strategies and be ready in case an accident does happen. If it does, try some of the first aid suggestions listed above. If you have any red flag symptoms such as (but not limited to) the inability to bear weight, more pain than you think you should have, extreme fatigue, or signs of infection, get help from a licensed medical professional!

SUNBURN Prevent sunburn by wearing broad spectrum (against UVA and UVB rays) sunscreen.

Cool compresses, avoid heat and humidity for a few days, hydrate, and take an NSAID such as ibuprofen or naproxen.

Avoid heat exhaustion by not running in high humidity or in temps over 90 degrees. Go by the 10% rule and hydrate before, during, and after running! If you develop a headache, confusion, or extreme fatigue, go to the ER!

ABBY ROAD RUN ON!

By Abby Werner hen I went to Run On! for the first time, I had the best (and easiest) shoe buying experience I’ve ever had in my life. First off, when my dad and I walked into the store I was a little surprised to see that it was more than just running shoes- it was everything a runner could ever use.

I met Run On! Dallas General Manager Ryan Wenos and Run On! Marketing Executive Mary Waida and they were both super nice and were very eager to answer any questions I had for them. I was going to get fitted for my first pair of real running shoes.

I sat down in the shoe area and Dawnn Gardener started measuring my foot. She measured both of my feet and had me do different things like walk around the store, stand on one foot, and squat just so she could really look at my arch.

Then she explained that even though I have size seven feet, she was going to get size eight shoes for me to try on to allow for my feet to grow and swell. She then went into the back and brought back about four or five shoe boxes. She put one brand of shoe on one foot and a different brand of shoe on the other. I walked around the store with the two shoes on and picked the one that felt the most comfortable.

She then put a different brand of shoe on my foot, keeping the one I picked the last time. I then once again walked around the store and picked the one I liked best. This went on for about 4 more rounds until I found a shoe that I truly felt fit my foot the best. She then had me try on that shoe’s mate and walk around once again. At that point I had absolutely fallen in love with my black, white, and purple Brooks Adrenaline running shoes.

After I had decided that these were the shoes for me, I wanted to ask a few questions which Dawnn was able to answer quite easily. I asked about how to clean them and the learned that I can just stick them in the washing machine as long as I let them air dry. I then asked how many miles should I put on my new shoes before getting new ones and was told that the answer was between 400 and 500 miles.

I also learned that the most important thing about buying new running shoes is getting the proper fit which goes for

length, width, and the amount of support in the shoe. Also for running shoes you need a breathable fabric, a mesh fabric.

When asked what the best sock for running is, Dawnn told me a synthetic sock is best. I thanked her for answering my questions and then went on the Run On! tour.

Jen VanCleave gave me a wonderful tour of the Run On! store. She showed me the men’s and women’s running clothes areas and made sure to point out that all the clothes were made with very breathable fabric, not cotton. She also made sure that I saw the running sock section, nutrition stand, firstaid stand, light stand, water bottle stand, dressing room, and GPS watch counter. My favorite part though, was when she took me into the back room where all the shoes are stored.

There were a hundreds and hundreds of running shoes, all different brands, styles and colors- it was quite incredible!

I had an amazing experience buying my first pair of running shoes at Run On! I would definitely recommend Run On! to anyone needing a new pair of running shoes. I feel like they were able to find an excellent fit for me without any trouble at all. I am very thankful for everyone there for being so patient with me and I can’t wait to go back!

Speaking of birthdays, have you been keeping up with Jimmy Baggs epic beer miles? When our friend turned 40 a couple months ago, he set goals for the year sure to put some happy into the birthday. Over the course of the next 365 days he will run at least 1 mile per day and drink a unique beer. His total mileage goal is 1,500 for the year and to consume 365 unique beers.
