Michael’s journey began on March 25, 1966, in Memphis, Tennessee, as the cherished son of Jimmy Smith and Mrs. Willie Mae Tappan. From the moment he came into this world, it was evident that Michael’s life was touched by a divine purpose.

Raised in the admiration and fear of God, Michael embraced his faith later in life and confessed his sins, accepting Jesus as his personal Savior. His commitment to his beliefs led him to be baptized in the name of Jesus. Michael’s spirit, molded in the image of God, echoed the words spoken long ago, “It is not good for man to be alone.” And so, God blessed him with a loving partner.

Michael Angelo Tappan found his soulmate in Sandra Williams, and although they did not have children together, they were blessed with a son and two grandchildren whom he loved dearly. Michael cherished his family and was devoted to their happiness and well-being.

Michael’s educational journey led him to graduate from Hamilton High School in the Class of ‘85, where he was renowned as an exceptional football player. His talents extended beyond the field, and his determination and skill were admired by all who knew him.

As we reflect on Michael’s life, we remember those who preceded him in transitioning to the next chapter. He joins his beloved parents, Jimmy Smith and Willie Mae Tappan, along with his brothers, Jimmy and Willie Tappan, his sister Martha Graham, brother-in-law Stafford Williams Jr., sisterin-law Diane Pegues, and his mother and father-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Stafford Williams Sr. Additionally, we honor the memory of his nephews, David Graham and Marcus Woods. Those who had the pleasure of knowing Michael were aware that he was never at a loss for words. He possessed an engaging and lively spirit, always ready for conversation and companionship. On August 8, 2008, he embarked on an early retirement from Preister’s & Associates, where he worked as a Carpenter/Foreman.

Michael leaves behind a legacy of precious memories that will be forever cherished by his wife of 21 years, Sandra D. Tappan, and his stepson, Erric. He was a proud grandfather to his grandson, DeMarcus, and his granddaughter, Laterrica. Michael’s memory will also be carried on by his brothers, Robert Tappan and Alton Tappan, his brother-in-law Michael Pegues, his sisters-in-law Deborah Woods and Toni Byrd, and a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

In this time of grief, let us celebrate the life of Michael Angelo Tappan, a man whose love and laughter touched the hearts of many. May his soul find eternal peace and may his memory inspire us to embrace each day with joy, faith, and a zest for life.
