VISUAL COMMUNICATIONS
2014
DESIGN BRIEF The Typographic Timeline is a mural that illustrates the history of graphic design/visual communications and typography. Its purpose is to educate and inform the viewer about the importance of the written word and how it began as early as cave paintings and progressed over thousands of years. The written word is the single most important accomplishment of humankind, giving us the ability to record information that before the alphabet was developed could only be verbally handed down from generation to generation. The role of designers, printers and typographers is to visually layout the written word to convey information, persuade the viewer and to get across a message to an intended audience. The Timeline Mural does this by visually portraying the important segments of type history as humankind moves from cave paintings to the digital era. Graphic designers, printers and typographers are responsible for revolutionizing and educating the world through the art and craftsmanship of visual communications. The goal of this project is to create a timeline mural which will create a powerful visual to the NECC campus that not only promotes the art department but the school as well. Each column will be 2’6 x6’. Columns will be assigned to individual students. Their responsibility is to design a comprehensive, visually cohesive work that focuses on the power, persuasion and beauty of typography.
