Dhi Youth Movement Youth for Youth, to empower and to lead

In early 2012, Dhi Youth Movement began as a small initiative by a few young individuals in Male’, with the vision to bring a positive change to society and to empower young people to contribute to society The group, with a strong following in Facebook, was used to mobilize volunteers for a flash freeze on 29th March 2012 and since then there has been no turning back. We got officially registered on 12th December 2012 as Dhivehi Youth Movement under the Associations and Societies Act of the Maldives. Any and all Maldivians between the age of 16 and 27 are welcome to join DYM. And everyone’s ideas and thoughts are welcome and appreciated

Editor-in-Chief

Dearest reader,

Often, we come upon a problem and see it too large or titanic to solve. We turn our backs and hope as hard as we can that the problem goes away on it’s own. As children we accepted being helpless. Most matters were decided for us and we did not have a say in it. Sometimes we tend to carry this feeling with us as adults although it isn’t as profound as before. But if we just remember that no problem is unsolvable as long as we band together we can rise to the occasion regardless of the obstacles we may face. The first issue of our magazine is the collaboration of so many skilled individuals that it goes to show you how much can be achieved when we dedicate ourselves as a group. From dating to eating to voting, the varied and inclusive nature of our magazine is remarkable. It reflects a fundamental belief of DYM. Everyone is welcome. And together we make a difference. Picture for instance the political realm of our little island nation. Rotten to the very core is it not? While we can choose to believe that our actions have no bearing in the halls of power and on those that dwell within these halls, we can also choose to discover just how much power we wield as individuals in a nation ascending to glory on democratic values. No longer are we the children of our collective memories. No longer are we completely helpless to shape the course of our own lives. We stand today as adults. And being an adult comes with it’s duties and obligations. Supreme among which is the decision that we must make on whether to find our voice and let it be heard. We have so many complaints and yet so many among us shy away from the ballot box for the mere inconvenience of exercising the power that is ours by constitutional decree. If we can take so much issue with the road our nation is headed down is it not logical that we channel our frustration with the system through the system. A day of significant importance approaches. A tick to realise our visions for our country. It is your choice to make. I trust you all to make the right one. Which is to vote.

CREATIVITY

L

ast week I had the chance to attend TEDxYouth@Colombo, an independently organised TED event in Sri Lankan capital Colombo where local experts spoke about innovation and bringing change to Sri Lanka. The eye-opening speeches focused primarily on the importance of innovation in building a strong economy and why Sri Lanka should give room to creative ideas in order to compete with countries like Singapore. The event forced me to rethink about the level of creativity and innovation of the Maldivian youth. It’s been said that everyone is born creative. As kids, we revel in imaginary play, ask bizarre questions that make absolutely no sense, sketch all kinds of shapes and call them names that only we understand. But over time, due to reasons that have even puzzled psychologists, many of us start to suppress those creative impulses. Instead, we learn to conform to established beliefs and values, be more suspicious and more analytical – factors that eventually crush creativity. As Maldivians, it’s common to hear discriminatory remarks about how backward South A s i a n s , except of course Maldivians, generally are in adopting new technologies. We are accustomed to the claims that just because Maldivians buy the latest gadgets, we are more creative & innovative than nationals of other countries in South Asia. But I am beginning to wonder whether those claims hold anyvalue, or that we simply buy those gadgets just because celebrities, athletes and people who are generally considered to be cool usually have one of those devices? Is the fact that we own fancy iPhones and iPads enough to claim that we are more creative and innovative than the rest in the region? Although there is no survey to back up our claim, Maldivians can boast that our country has perhaps the highest technology adoption rate in South Asia. However, there are many other aspects linked to creativity and innovation that our friends in other regional countries can lay claim to: Sri Lankans can take pride in a telecom industry that beat India in introducing GSM, 3G and now LTE 4G. India and Pakistan of course have the most advanced militaries in the region. But apart from the technology-related aspects, how often do we get the chance to attend panel discussions, talk shows, debates, etc. in the Maldives that would instil creative thinking in our future generations? How many of us are genuinely interested in creating a difference for the sake of our country? We can only go so far with our fancy iPhones and iPads. Many of our friends in neighbouring countries might not have the latest smartphones or tablets, but they have the one thing we lack; the creative spirit and will to discuss innovative ideas for a better community and a better nation! So how can we boost our creativity? The late Apple cofounder Steve Jobs gives a simple, yet powerful advice to maximise our creative output; “Kick-start your brain. New ideas come from watching something, talk[ing] to people, experimenting, asking questions, and getting out of the office!”

Patriotism “Patriotism is the latest refuge of a scoundrel”, says Dr.Johnson. In the modern world where the cunning and selfish people thrive and the hard working conscientious people suffer, this quotation rings true. The corrupt few pass for great patriots and hold the entire nation to ransom. However, not all people are like this. Most people are patriotic by nature. They are only allured and misled by the crafty politicians. Ever since man appeared on Earth, he has loved the land of his native birthplace. This place where we have come of age, from our days as a child to the prime of our youth, obviously has a homely warmth to us. We cherish this beautiful string of low lying coral islands and the heavenly turquoise blue water studded with profusely coloured corals. We like the culture of our country and the habits and manners of our compatriots. The very clothes they wear. Their living and eating habits look pleasant to us. This may be why, Sir Walter Scott, the famous poet from Scotland once said, “Breathes there the man with soul so dead, Who never to himself hath said, This is my own, my native land?” Unfortunately, we Maldivians lack these patriotic feelings. We give preference to other countries cultures and their lifestyles. At present our youth are led astray by the crafty neighbouring powers and instigated to destabilize our country and spread lawlessness all around. Maldives has a very old and grand civilization and culture. We should be proud of it. She has given birth to great heroes such as Muhammed Thakurufaanu. She has made tremendous progress after independence and has made a mark on the world at large as symbol of luxury showcasing the simplicity and the sunny side of our land. Let us appreciate her unity instead of criticizing. Let us give social and economic equality, health and education to all and work together to make Maldives strong. Yes, it is true, united we stand, divided we fall. Shiyaz

MOVIE REVIEW

Most of you readers are likely to have heard about Christopher Nolan through his recordbreaking blockbusters like The Dark Knight and Inception. His 4th big-screen feature, The Prestige was my introduction to his mastery, and let me start by saying that this movie, brilliant in every sense of word, made me watch every single film that Nolan has made till date, including his low-budget, black-and-white debut, Following (1998). Based on the 1995 novel of the same name by Christopher Priest, this head-spinning psychological thriller centres around two magicians, Robert Angier (Jackman) and Alfred Borden (Bale), out on collusive paths to seek revenge and to beat each other in his own devious game of illusionism. Both Jackman and Bale gives sure-fire believability in their compelling performances. The supporting cast is comprised of Caine as the scene-stealing stage engineer John Cutter, Johansson as Olivia Wenscombe (the sexy assistant and lover to Angier), and music legend David Bowie, whose performance as real-life inventor Nikola Tesla is just one of the many surprises of this historical shocker. Nolan, clever as ever with his direction makes this film as baffling and entertaining as the toughest of magic tricks. Intervening events of the past and present together, it grabs the audience's attention, first out of confusion, then out of sheer curiosity and intrigue. But be warned: it would be hard to understand or enjoy this film with an already occupied mind. Cast: Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Scarlett Johansson, Michael Caine, Rebecca Hall, David Bowie

Director: Christopher Nolan

Rating

This is not your ideal feel-good movie that you'd fancy watching to wind up a long day. Of all the suspense movies I've watched, this would rank amongst the top with most shocking climaxes. It hits hard, like a freight train, that you might even feel like you have been cheated like the audiences attending the magicians' shows in the movie. But nevertheless, it's a climax that makes the pieces fall into place, and it even made me go back for a second viewing, and that's a true achievement for any filmmaker: to have the audience wanting to screen their movie more than once. Nolan expertly achieves that with this film.

May s Must Check Outs May is a month that movie goers certainly look forward to, with some of the year's most anticipated films coming out to make a name as one of the year's summer blockbusters. Though we're not sure about what movies will be screened at our local theatres, here are some movies being released in May that we're stoked about. :D

Iron Man 3: Who's not excited about this? This world-wide sensation is making its return for the 3rd -and final- instalment. With Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow returning as Tony Stark/Iron Man and Pepper Potts respectively, we're super-excited to see Academy Award winning acting legend Ben Kingsley taking the seat of the villain as Mandarin, the leader of a terrorist organization that wreaks havoc into Tony's personal life.

The Hangover Part III: It seems as if May is a month for 3rd instalments in movie franchises, eh? Well, not quite so. But our favorite bad boys from this record breaking comedy franchise is hitting the road for the 3rd film. With no bachelor party or wedding to ruin after their wild night, it seems as if there isn't much to go wrong here. Well, not quite so.

The Great Gatsby: Since it's 1st trailer hit the web more than a year ago, the wait for this new lavish and epic production from director Baz Luhrmann (Romeo+Juliet, Moulin Rouge!) has been almost exhausting. Based on the classic American novel of the same name, this romantic drama follows the life of millionaire Jay Gatsby, played by Leonardo DiCaprio (aren't we already excited?), and his neighbour Nick Carraway (Toby Maguire). With an ensemble of Carrey Mulligan, Isla Fisher, Joel Edgerton and even Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan, this movie brings 2 words to mind: Can't Wait.

The Death Note Part 1

Everything changed when my father married my step mother, a young woman slender and beautiful with a golden heart. I fell in love with her as soon as we met. She was so kind to me that I almost never felt the absence of my mother. My father was always away for work, travelling all over the world. It was my step mother who took care of me after my mother died. But with her she also brought the “death note”, a step sister who for many reasons I never accepted as a sister but rather as a friend and an enemy. Her name was Yasmine. Yasmine was the strangest person I have ever met. She was beautiful like her mother. Guys were crazy about her everywhere she went. But she had a heart and a mind that remains a mystery to me, for I was never able to figure her out. Even if we lived under the same roof we had completely different natures. She was the complete opposite of me. In some ways she was sweet and in most ways evil. When I was in trouble she always rescued me and when I had no troubles she always made sure I had some. Lately everything she did irritated me. For Yasmine, there was no space for compromise, no softening the blow when she decided to speak. At first it hadn't mattered to me. But then things got worse. Countless times I was forced to smooth ruffled feelings that tore me apart. But I will always remember all those times she saved me from being bullied and once from being raped. Yasmine saved me from

being victimised by others but made me her own victim. It was a fine evening when I brought Rayan home for the first time, to meet my parents. Rayan was my boyfriend whom I have loved unconditionally and irrevocably. We were engaged to get married. Rayan had proposed to me the day before. I was walking on cloud nine and thrilled beyond anything you can imagine. It was the happiest day of my life. We were at the dining table having dinner when Yasmine entered the room. I saw Rayan staring at her but I had seen this happen with guys more often to bother. So I ignored him and sweetly introduced them to each other. They shook hands and Yasmine joined us for dinner. She talked to Rayan about work, politics, art, global warming etc. It was easy to pick up a conversation with Yasmine, for if it was a story she was all ears and mouth. I was pleased to see the bonding between them, because Yasmine made the meeting with my parents all the more easier for me. Two weeks later to the birthday party of my mother, I invited Rayan again to my house. We spent the whole evening together. It was at the end of the party when I couldn't find Rayan around. I went looking for him. When I entered the kitchen I couldn't believe my eyes. Yasmine was wrapped around Rayan, kissing. I was about to scream at them whenYasmine broke apart and simply said “Ssshhh…don't! It's image credits: Teen Vogue (teenvogue.com)

no big deal honey...People kiss you know…by the way it was fun doing your boyfriend...He is so gorgeous...I love him...Good choice sissy” and walked away winking at Rayan who looked thunderstruck. This was one of the many times I had to just swallow what happened even though I was so heartbroken. What choice did I have? I was engaged to Rayan and Yasmine was my mother's daughter. I couldn't bear to do anything that will make my mother unhappy. So I just let go thinking it was just a mistake Rayan did. Eventually it turned out to be my biggest mistake. The relationship between Yasmine and Rayan grew into something else before my eyes until I found them yet again with such intimacy that I couldn't stand watching them. My mother was away travelling with my father and I was left alone with Yasmine. I was bewildered and sick to my stomach to see them together again. Breaking up with Rayan was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do in my life. But he left me with no choice by then, so I called it off. I had a row with Yasmine that night. “How could you do this to me?” I kept on saying until she bellowed “You know what, it's all your fault, you don't know how to keep a guy at your side” “Obviously with you around nobody can” I cried “You are just a big fat loser…and do you know what else you are? You are a freak… you should be thankful to me for saving your life…just get lost okay?” she screamed and walked away. Alright, I thought, if she wants me to get lost that is what I would do. So I got out of the house swearing never to come back ever again. I walked and walked oblivious to where I was going. All I could think was what should I do now? What should I do now to calm myself down and get some rest? I felt so restless and helpless. I walked until I could walk no longer, and collapsed into a tired heap at the side of the road. My colorful floral dress soiled. I felt tired, I felt vulnerable but most of all I felt completely fragmented into countless many pieces as I sat there waiting for something or someone that I was sure would never come. So I held my head in my hand and wept, feeling exhaustion and defeat overtook my frail body as it convulsed as

tears streamed down my pale cheeks. Amidst my tears I prayed, I prayed and wished for every awful thing imaginable to happen to Yasmine. I wanted her dead. Yes. Dead, that's it. I wanted to hurt her, torture her like she had tortured me. I sat there at the side of the road for what seemed like an eternity until I came to my senses and finally decided to go home. The decision to go back was again another big mistake. A mistake which mentally scarred me for the rest of my life. I would never be 'normal' ever again. I walked into the living room to find Yasmine hanging from the fan. She was shuddering for breath. I called for help but nobody was around. The unusual circumstances in which I found myself shifted me into a state of panic. I ran to the kitchen, grabbed a knife. By the time I was able to hurriedly cut her loose she had become very still. I laid her head on my lap and begged her to wake up; optimistically I believed she would. She opened her eyes to look at my face and shuddered one last time. I felt her spirit surrender its attachment to her body. I sat there watching her die. It was the most horrible thing I have ever seen in my life. I couldn't comprehend anything. My mind was so preoccupied with the scene in front of me. I could only hear the rhythmic pulse of my heart beating. Random thoughts danced in and out of my brain. I could never believe Yasmine committed suicide. How could she? She was so full of life, so happy all the time and she adored herself. Why would she do this to herself? I kept wondering. In that moment I suddenly felt more vulnerable than ever, yet I couldn't cry. No tears came from my eyes. I tried to stand up but I had difficulty coordinating my movements. My legs felt like jelly. The mass of my body felt heavy. I stared at Yasmine's beautiful face, feeling detached to reality, my head throbbing, ready to burst any minute. What had become of Yasmine? Her life so priceless, she lay there motionless. Folded in her right hand, I saw a small piece of paper. Inside was a note which read “I warmed my hands before the fire of life and I now am ready to depart” ... To be continued Muru

Being a Good Friend “In kindergarten your idea of a good friend was the person who let you have the red crayon when all that was left was the ugly black one.” That day had made into the past. Things we see and how we see it has changed. Your favorite color is no longer red. It just might be the ‘ugly’ black now.

What I mean to say is just don’t be selfish. For example you are having a conversation. Try not to monopolize it. Just don’t go babbling about your feeling and your problems. Remember your friend has problems too. Make sure you are listening as much as you’re talking about yourself.

What is the present picture? Today, your idea of a good friend is, the person who remembered your birthday via Facebook and writes on your wall sharp at 0000hrs – Or NOT. Now ask yourself – Are you that person? Are you a ‘good’ friend? Well, if you remember your friend’s birthday via Facebook then you may want to pause and reflect. And if you can tell without consulting any of your e-birthday reminders, you are much better a friend than most.

Let’s go back to the giving. Talk to your friend, hear out their problems and thoughts. You might not be in a position to help, but being there for him is something huge that you can do. Give thoughtful advice. Tell him what you think would be the right thing to do, but don’t insist that your friend do as you say. Don’t judge, because at the end of the day who are we to judge. We all make the ‘shitty’ mistakes and that’s what life is all about. Most importantly, don’t get offended because your friend listened to your advice but decided to ignore it.

Anyway, how can you be the good friend. First of all, build the relationship on trust. Make promises you can keep. We all know wellintentioned, but flaky people who says, “Okay, I will”, but never follow through. If that’s you, know that you’re eroding your friends trust. Eventually they will stop believing what you do. Be loyal – Treat him or her, the way you want to be treated. After all this is the key to success of every relationship. Then there is the idea of ‘giving and receiving as well as having and sharing’. By that, I don’t mean gift them the latest Samsung Galaxy series mobile, when it hits the market – NO. Image from iStockphoto (http://www.istockphoto.com)

And finally, work on making your friendship last. Remember sometimes things just don’t go as you want it to and it doesn’t always go right. But it doesn’t always go wrong either. So be forgiving when things go wrong in your friendship. Like I said, don’t judge them. Hate the act not the person . Most things can be talked through. Spend time together, but at the same time know when he or she wants to be alone. Be a pain in the ass, but know when the ass is pained too much. In the end, just don’t be someone who remembers his or her birthday because your alarm rang at 23:59.

Voting with Knowledge “Elections belong to the people. It's their decision. If they decide to turn their back on the fire and burn their behinds, then they will just have to sit on their blisters.” ― Abraham Lincoln We tend to take politics a lot less seriously than we should. We joke about the corruption, the dirty scandals and laugh at the bigotry and the hypocrisy of our leaders as though they were jesters. But these are the people deciding the fate of our country. These are the people who make the laws by which you are obliged to abide by. We constantly talk about the ‘idiocracy’ of the democracy and the lack of knowledge of our leaders; yet fail to grasp the reality that it was our own foolishness that put them there. They are part of the sovereign power that rules us and a mockery upon them is in the end, a mockery on ourselves.

benefit, not yours. So let’s not be so naïve as to think that these socalled-leaders know what’s best and they will make the right moves or the right decisions. Learn, so that you know what’s best for your country. And make your knowledge heard. Make it heard so that when they hear it, they have to listen. And start by voting for the person who has integrity. Who will and who has not in the past, failed to achieve the goals he has set. Vote for a person who is loyal, who is worthy of your trust and who has an agenda that is not only beneficial, but also most importantly feasible. It is easy to weave poetic words together and dream of utopia, but don’t get hypnotized by mere words. Ask questions. Ask how they will achieve the goals they have set and use the knowledge you’ve got to understand whether they can. It is pointless to elect a leader who talks the talk, but can’t walk the walk. And as soon as they realise that you are not a bunch of sheep that can be herded to your doom, they will realise that they will have to do more than that.

This article is not going to advise you on whether you should vote for the corrupt, the naïve or the rich. It will not in anyway try to coerce you into the direction of my political beliefs. All I want to ask As Alice Walker once said, “The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they from you…is to simply vote. don’t have any.” So when you get to the voting You ask why? Because it is your duty as a citizen. booth, understand what that tick in the box It’s the reason we are a democracy and not a means. Make sure you believe in this person. Not dictatorship. Because less than 10 years ago, not with blind faith, but because you understand what one Maldivian had the freedom to do what you he/she stands for and want it to happen. But also can do today with a single mark on a scrap of understand that the person and you yourself are paper. This is one of the few moments that your human as well. You don’t owe a loyalty towards opinion is valued in this flawed system of this person if he/she doesn’t stick to what he/she governance and if you don’t use it, you are passing campaigned for. And even if you voted for him/her, that opportunity off to the many greedy self- you have the ability and more importantly, the interested people who will vote just on the basis of duty to criticise his/her actions in office, more so their own corrupt agenda. Now, not everyone has because you voted and involved yourself in the this national pride or need to be part of the electoral process. Most importantly, don’t let the political arena and that’s fine. But being part of simplicity of the process fool you; with that single this country, it is important for your own survival scrap of paper you are taking part in a process that that you do have some knowledge of who is ultimately decides the fate of your country. And governing you because the people in power can, with it your own fate. So don’t take the decision on and most likely will, use their elected office and whom to vote for lightly; vote with knowledge. the powers that come with that post to their

Getting plenty of antioxidantrich foods makes sense for active people, since free radicals are produced any time the body's cells process oxygen and antioxidants protect our cells from the effects of free radicals. Free radicals can damage cells, and may play a role in heart disease, cancer and other diseases. Basically free radicals = Bad and antioxidants = good. Get the idea? Great. Hence you can clearly see why it is important to take in foods that are high in antioxidants. This Fresh Berry Smoothie recipe is a heap of healthy, a source of carbohydrate and powerful antioxidants and a great way to kick start your day. Image credits: Dr Life Speaks (drlifespeaks.com)

Who doesn't like an éclair? I bet you have had one of these at least once in your lifetime and craved for some more. Well, what we have here is a recipe of what is called an “Éclair Cake”. I know, the name is quite fancy and all but you would be surprised by how easy it is to make it. Enjoy!

Eclair Cake by The Girl in the Toque

All we need is 3 cups milk 230g frozen whipped topping, thawed 460g package graham cracker squares (or just any cracker available at stores near you) 450g prepared chocolate frosting 100g instant vanilla pudding mix

How to

In a medium bowl, thoroughly blend the pudding mix, whipped topping, and milk. Arranging time! a single layer of graham cracker squares in the bottom of a 13x9 inch baking pan. You don't have to be exact, just grab a few crackers and start layering. Spread half of the pudding mixture over the crackers evenly and top with another layer of crackers and the remaining pudding mixture. Top with a final layer of graham crackers. Now comes the fun part. Get creative, spread the frosting over the whole cake up to the edges of the pan and decorate however you like. Cover, and chill at least 4 hours before serving. Dig in while it's hot. (Get the pun?) Image credits: Plain Chicken (plainchicken.com) 23

Interview with the founders of So I’m here with the founders of Dhi Youth Movement, Nawaf, Shaha and Rish. Let’s start with basics. What is “Dhi Youth Movement?” N: What we’re trying to make DYM is a youth platform where young people from across the country can get their voices heard on a more social level and they can showcase their talents and be someone someday and we hope to be part of it, to provide an opportunity. S: Basically DYM is something for the young people b the young people N: As our motto goes, youth for youth to empower and lead. Do you guys have a mission? R: We do have a mission, a vision and we are driven by a set of values. DYM’s vision is to create a society where young people’s voice is heard, valued and young people are actively involved in the diverse practices of civic, social, economic and cultural life. Our mission is to to provide a platform for y o u t h t o express their individualit y, their creativity, and to ensure that their full potential is met. N: DYM is also driven by our values, which is SPEED. What is Speed? S: SPEED is our Spontaneity, our Passion, our belief in Empowerment, of Exploration, a n d D i ve r s i t y. B a s i c a l l y we ’ re ve r y spontaneous people, we do things out of

the blue whenever we need. So there is no planning involved? N: No, there is actually. we do make our quarterly annual plans which we try to follow and we have around a week or two to plan and carry out depending on the project and we get a core group member to be the project coordinator. Why the name DYM? S: We’re trying to come up with names that have Dhi right Nawaf? N: Yeah S: Yeah, so we first started with the name Dhi Heart and we made a group. N: After first project, we opened to public to come up with a name S: One of our now core members Shaam, came up with the name DHivehi Youth Movement and we all liked the name How did you form DYM? N: If i’m not mistake, it was 26 March, I met with Shaha and we were at artificial beach and I said there’s a group called I m p r o v Everywhere so let’s do something for Earth Hour. It was more of an event based and the next day I talked to Rish and she was on board. When the event was a success we thought it had more potential. Even after that we operated in a more cool group kind of way. haha, and on 12 Dec last year we got registered.

24

Wow. That’s quite a story. Since there are three of you acting as founders of DYM, how are strategic decisions made and how are they communicated in the organization? R: We have a core group of 10 people and whenever some people come up with a plan, everyone in core group will vote and decide whether we continue with it. I understand you’ve worked with other organizations in the past. What other organizations would you consider to be your organization’s peers? R: We conducted this project called Democracy Evening where 6 NGO’s were there including TM, Madulu, SOS, Revive, MDN and we’ve also collaborated with others in Youth for Youth, and the major event Katti Hivvaru Fest was done in collaboration with Youth ministry and other organizations. What would you say m a k e s “ D h i Yo u t h Movement” different and stand out from all the other organizations? R: We function. N: I think the major thing is we've open to public and in decision making, w e t r y t o c a t e r fo r everyone so if you have an idea pop it by us and we'll consider and try to get it done, given our limited resources. Young people’s ideas are always welcome R: We’re not narrowed down to a specific area and we have a large scope so unlike other NGO’s, where they mark only a special day, we can celebrate any day. S: I’d say we do unorthodox, out of the box things. We don’t just have workshops and other stuff, as one our values is spontaneity, we try to mix it and most of what we’ve done far, are very different and I think that’s why it speaks to youth. All of our projects are very fun, there’s nothing boring that’s how we roll.

Looking back at the events you have initiated as an organization, which one accomplishment would you say DYM is the most proud of? Why? N: KHF it’s where we kicked off as a brand with very limited resources, we pulled off a major two day festival in just two weeks. It was quite a feat. Also surviving for this long is an accomplishment. It’s over an year and we’re growing and stronger than ever. N ow to make things interes ting, I’ll individually question you. I’ll start with Rish. Do you believe leadership can be taught? R: Yes. Leaders are not born. They are made. If a person is not given responsibility, the person will not know how to do it, but when the person is given a chance and asked to organize and conduct things then leadership qualities can be seen. Shaha, what is the future of “Dhi Youth Movement?” S: DYM is going to be t h i s ex t ra o rd i n a r y thing that’s gonna take this country by the storm. It’s gonna be big and what we want is a lot of young people all over the country coming together. We already have a group doing DYM projec ts in Kulhuduffushi, so we want something like that possibly in every island or atoll. Nawaf, what is your advice to our readers? N: If you want to bring change, you don’t need power or money, you only need to believe in yourself and do it, so I wanna tell all our readers, to dream a little bit more, do a little bit more and do as what your heart says.

Coffee with Nawaf Describe your childhood a little. I had a pretty good childhood I would say. 4th of the 5 children my parents have. My school life was really good, made lots of friends, enjoyed every second of life, picked up new habits, mostly bad. haha. Did you have any imaginary friends as a kid? If so what did you name them? I’ve always wanted to have a pixie or an elf because as a kid I used to be very imaginative and I used to read lots of books about elves and everything. ..

How did you get interested in volunteer work? I think I’ve always been interested and involved in voluntary work. I was captain of my Primary and deputy captain of both my, Secondary and Higher Secondary school so even as a kid I was involved in leadership and doing things just because you want instead of because you have to. My parents have always been very supportive and my friends as well and are selfless volunteers. I can’t think of when as far as I can think, I have always been interested and involved.

What is your favourite thing to do on a rainy day? Depends. Err, if I could gather a few people, I would stay out and get drenched in rain and go and have coffee, but If i can’t, then I would stay home, have a cup of mint tea and watch an old movie or something. And of course have the balcony door open.

So I hear you travel a lot, what’s your favourite of the places you’ve been to? I don’t travel a lot but haha. I love Sri Lanka. I love the culture, the mountains, the greens, all the natural historic places, the people, it amuses me all of that. I don’t like Colombo much but when you go out and travel. Last year we went from East to west and you get to see all awesome things.

Something significant which changed my life, I think it would be the London trip. After YLP, 9 of us, including Shaha we went to London for a study tour. Met lots of awesome people who actually made the idea of change into something possible, the idea that you don't need power or money, but just the will and the desire and passion to do it.

strolls around Male’, travelling, reading, not novels just reading articles and blogs and tweeting, facebook, instagram, social media at its best. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Probably doing my Masters degree. What field do you plan to study? Something related to politics or international relations.

Who are you going to vote for? If clueless tell Is there anyone you consider as your us more. personal hero? hahaha. I am not sure yet, but I think the most As cheesy as it sounds I think it would be by important thing is you vote for who you want, mom. and not sell your vote or blindly follow. Is there someone special in your life right now? Yes or no, do tell us more. There actually is! And I am hoping it would work. When you’re not changing the world, what do you do on your free time? I work for an NGO which deals with young people and so pretty much my entire life revolves around developing young people. All My best friends in twitter and whenever we go for coffee the only thing we usually all about youth unemployment, training and workshops. I love to cook,

Coffee with Rish Describe your childhood a little. It was basically mostly about the studies. It was a good thing that all the teachers encouraged me and they all loved me. It was somewhat good. Were you a good student? Yes. The main aim would be to the brightest student of the grade. That’s what my parents and family wanted to do. D i d yo u h a ve a ny imaginary friends as a kid? If so what did you name them? Well, Up until 7 years, I had my youngest brother as my partner in crime so I did not need anybody else. Imaginary or otherwise. Would you say you were really close? Wes, back then we were very close. Not that we are distant now, we’re just not that close. Share with us something a bit embarrassing that happened when you were young. There was this one day when there was a drawing competition and I won the second prize and it was announced in the assembly that day. There was a gigantic gift given and I was supposed to hold it for a photograph and return it to the guest of honor and go back but I took it with me and everybody was calling me but I didn't hear them and everyone was laughing. I took it and stood in the line proudly. Later when everyone filled me in it was quite embarrassing.

How did you get interested in volunteer work? It started when I was about 13 years old. I was a favourite student of my Quran teacher and he would always ask me to inform the parents about the meetings and how the classes are going on so I used to do that for him with interest and that’s where I started working voluntarily. After that, back in the island we had this NGO called Hand in Hand where lots of young people were asked to join and I started working with them and it was a bit difficult to go out as not everybody in the family supports voluntary work. Since I loved it so much, I go out into the field and do the work. What is your favourite thing to do on a rainy day? Go into the rain and enjoy it with my friends, make some paper boats and go swimming, play football in the rain. Tell us about a life changing event that happened to you. When I was about 6 years. I used to be very closed person, very attached to my father and in 2001 he passed away which was very traumatic and then that changed all of my life I guess. The way I behave, how I got along with people afterwards. What is the most exciting DYM project you have worked on? That would be ARK project that we hosted in Jan. Seeing someone smile, making someone happy makes you happier. A simple act of your making someone happy, that satisfaction is priceless.

Coffee with Shaha

Describe your childhood a little. My childhood was very interesting. I was the first and I was the only child for a long time so I got spoiled by everybody in my family. It was somehow bittersweet but really cool. I also went to school at an early age and I was very much into books. Mom tells me I would go read notices on streets, I would read people’s love letters. I had a special uniform to school because I joined school early and when I get hungry I’ll come back home.

Were you always into stories, reading? Yes, I was always into reading. I have a whole lots of books, the whole Nancy Drew collection, I was into ND at some point in my life. I remember very vividly when Harry Potter, the first book was out but my parents won’t let me read it but I got one from a friend I had and I would wake up real early just so I can read a few chapters before my mom woke up. I was reading ever since I can remember existing Share with us something a bit embarrassing that happened when you were young. I used to read Birbal and Akbar stories and in this one story a woman lost a ring in a dark place but since it was dark, she was trying to find it in a lit place. Time came that I lost a ring in a very hot place, but since it was hot I told my parents I lost it at this flower bed which was shady. They took the entire flower bed out and then I told them about the story. Everybody to even this day make fun of me for that. (laughs fondly How did you get interested in volunteer work? Umm, I think it was after I went to YLP. Before that I would participate in things, but it wasn’t exactly voluntary. I do lots of things, but it was in a more selfish way. What is your favourite thing to do on a cold, rainy day? That would be curling up with a good book, a cup of hot chocolate. That doesn’t count since all you do is that. Is there anything else to your life? I like to write letters. On people’s birthdays I give them handwritten letters. Technology has taken away the beautiful art of written letters. It’s very heartwarming to get a letter that someone has taken the time to write.

30

COVER Tell us about a life changing event that happened to you. Again, it has to be YLP. Before that I was rather selfish, maybe because I studied business so we’re thought to have this mentality to always work for own good and profits and also as I grew up, I was brought up in a very competitive environment. I tell myself that my parents would disown me if I didn’t get my perfect grades, but they don’t even know about that haha. What happened with YLP was that after I went there I realized that every individual had a role in society and I was giving all my time energy to my benefit and that was when everything changed. If I didn’t go to YLP, I wouldn't be here at DYM, I’d be doing my Masters or something. What is the most exciting DYM project you have worked on? All of them are exciting, but there are two that I can think of right now. ARK that we did on our 0th anniversary. It was really overwhelming and everyone was happy and there was a lot of good energy going on. The other is this DYM magazine, which is very exciting. You ask people to write articles and their creativity is so cool.

Is there anyone you consider as your personal hero? A lot of people. To be honest, I don’t have a mentor but I have people whose work inspires me. Some of them are fictional, haha. JK Rowling because she wrote the Harry Potter series which was my childhood. Then there’s Princess Diana. I was very sad when I heard about her death. She was one of the people I looked up to, she was the kind of princess that every girl wanted to be. Then, my parents definitely. My mom especially. It’s interesting that all three of them are women, haha. Some people might throw accusations that you’re a fashionista. How would you answer that? hahaha. I was very interested in fashion even at a young age, I love the colours, patterns, ideas and it’s one of my dreams to have a fashion line. I wouldn’t call myself a fashionista. I like a weird mix styles. I’m in my early twenties, and I experiment with different styles. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? I see myself getting a Masters, preferably a PHD and having my own business, that kinda thing. probably working for DYM, in 5 years it’ll be bigger than life I hope. Who are you going to vote for? If clueless tell us more. I don’t actually. I haven’t seriously given thought to it but I will soon because when I vote, I wanna know. I’m definitely voting. Honestly, I get so annoyed when people don’t vote. You don’t vote and you don’t get to say this and that. I want someone who’s driven, not my money or his/her own personal agenda but someone who listens, and also someone who’s down to earth and passionate about environment.

The album title is not exactly your ideal name for a breakthrough album. Does it mean that Ms. Lana Del Rey (a.k.a. Elizabeth Grant)’s career has begun only to die quickly? Or that the memories one might make with this album will soon fade away? On the album opening title track, she sings “Sometimes love is not enough, and the road gets tough, I don’t know why.” Every song lyric, that she either wrote or co-wrote boasts of some experience with men and their wealth that she relied on in her struggling days to become a renowned musician. She expresses tragedy, lust, confusion, desperation, pain and etc, ever so gracefully with her poetic writing on the tunes of love-on-unrulygrounds that dominates this album. Her unique style is a welcome change, but it strikes as not everybody’s idea of a-cup-of-tea at the same time. The themes are very repetitive throughout the album, with some similar lyrics even making appearances on two separate songs. And most songs need a couple of listens to really get the feel of it. This album, critically, received very mixed reviews. However, the real winner on this album is her voice. Soft and sultry on the album highlights like “Video Games” and “Blue Jeans”. Overwhelmingly sexy on the tracks “Off To The Races” and “National Anthem”. Generally always highly emotive and moving, especially on tracks like “Carmen” and “Dark Paradise”, her voice will take you on an emotional roller coaster ride that will etch in your mind as a memory that is unlikely to fade away too soon. When she croons “I will love you till the end of time” on “Blue Jeans”, it’s a secret confession you make along with her, and the stand-out track “Without You” from the Deluxe Edition will have you thinking of a love, any form it might be, that you have shared in your past. Lana Del Rey, like everything on earth, is “Born to Die”, but with this album, she has me wishing that she’d stick around forever. image credits: Fem Magazine (femmagazine.com) 32

Despite the mixed critical reception, Born to Die was a financial success. It topped album charts in over 11 countries worldwide, including UK and Australia. In US, it debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 chart, behind Adele’s mega-hit, 21. As of December 2012, the album has sold over 3.5 million copies world-wide, making it the 5th best-selling album of 2012. As for the singles, they had moderate successes on the US charts, with Video Games being the only song that charted on Hot 100, peaking at 91. Internationally, however, the singles had success, spawning 2 top 10 singles in UK (Video Games and Born to Die, both peaking at 9). Summertime Sadness hit #1 in Ukraine and Poland, while reaching top 10 in various other international markets. Customer reviews on Amazon.com and iTunes are highly positive, with most giving it a rating of 4.5/5. Some have cited that “Every song on this album is good”, “Classier than anything I’ve ever heard”, “Outstanding, fresh”, and “..did not take long… to listen on repeat.” Album Accolades debuted at #2 - billboard 200 sold over 3.5 copies worldwide 5th best selling album of 2012 Charted Singles Video Games Born to Die Summertime Sadness

Life List 101

listing you dreams and living them

A life list (also known as a bucket list) is a list of dreams, goals and aspirations. A life list is about living life, it’s about writing down a list of things that you want to do and then doing them. I first read about it in a book that described John Goddard, who wrote 127 things he wanted to do in his life list (most of which were extremely adventurous and difficult) when he was fifteen and then did most of them. Since then, I’ve seen and read several life lists and even made my own.

Tips to Write a Life List 1. List down everything I listed down every little and big thing, from visit every country in the world to jumping on a pile of leaves.

2. Categorize Maybe it’s just my nature of categorizing things, but I found that when I put similar things in one category, it made it easier to track and find exactly what I want. My categories range from travel and sightseeing to food to creativity.

3. Make it your own While Goddard’s list inspired me, I did not copy everything from his, because I did not want them. All my goals are things I personally want. Some of them were borrowed from other’s lists such as “know the alphabet backwards” and most of them are just found on mine including “get the Shaheed Labeeb award”. So make it your very own life list. Your list can tell you so much about yourself.

4. Start from the beginning I started writing it when I was 17, but even before this I had achieved some of the goals I set out to achieve, so I included them and cut them off as well.

5. Execute it! After you write down the list, plan each goal. I usually try to do 6‐10 goals per year or even more. I pick the goal and make a goal plan, which includes a time frame, cost involved and how I’m gonna do it. Right now, I’m working to “read my height in books”, so I checked my height and noted it down, I check the width of the spine and keep cutting off from my height. I’ve given this goal two years since I don’t include e‐books. Once you plan, then just do it! One last rule is to enjoy yourself and not just do it for the sake of crossing it off. Have fun. (P.S: crossing it off is loads fun too)

DATING

Pursuing Desires

There was once a girl. Like all good stories this one is also graced by a lovely dame. I had the fantastic pleasure of coming to know this young dame. At the time I hadn t the foggiest inkling of the adventure on which I was about to embark upon. Or how dear she would come to be to me that fateful half an year ago. Ahh the splendours of being young and naive. I must admit in all humility that I am hardly the best storyteller. But I shall strive to give voice and life to this tale. A story of romance of two worlds spanning across two nations and the countless leagues of ocean separating them. With your gracious permission my dearest reader, allow me to paint you this picture of a daring romance. We met rather ordinarily. As is usual I was upto no good with my usual jiggery pokery. And although it is a point of minor embarrassment to me now had it not been for my mischievous ways our paths may have never crossed. Unbeknownst to me my obnoxious behaviour had managed to tickle her curiosity. Thus began our tango. She sought me out under false pretenses. This wasn t a case of merely using a false name my dear friends. No. Our leading lady is better than simple ploys and meek constructs. She hijacked some poor

soul s identity to approach me. Such is the cunning of our lady. I am normally very suspicious of people unknown to me but who can really be objective when a gorgeously heart warming smile is squarely focused on you. As days passed we grew on each other. We discussed and argued, m o s t l y argued, at length a b o u t co m p l e x notions a n d mundane details. It was our usual habit to make a public spectacle of our dis a g re e me nt s . W i t t y repart ees and playful verbal s l a p s delivered with ill concealed glee on the ether for all to see. Life was good and I was enjoying every moment of it. In fact I was enjoying myself so much that I began to dream of more. Up to this point we had not met and for two people that got along this famously it is a crying shame to have not met don t you agree? Well we were in luck, for it was time for a meeting vis-Ă -vis. Or at least in my mind it certainly was.

Unbeknownst to me my obnoxious behaviour had managed to tickle her curiosity

36

Truth be told from the very moment we first spoke I had my designs on her. Her dazzling smile, questioning eyes, and lustrous curly locks that just call out to be felt and curled around your finger. As you can clearly see I was smitten. Imagine my thrill when the perfect golden opportunity presented itself in the form of a trip. A journey with a single minded resolution, sweep my belladonna off her dainty arrogant feet. So I went to her. It was my first time in the air and let me tell you soaring near the heavens is the most eclectic feeling. From high on I viewed the wild ravines, coursing rivers and reaching mountains. It was one of the most momentous views of my brief life, Serendiva was forever engraved most affectionately in my heart. Not only because I later made lifelong friendships there. That is a story for another time. It was with great anticipation that I found my way to her residence. She knew nothing of this, which was all well too for I wished for it to be a surprise. As I walked in I composed myself with what seemed to me as my most charming crooked smile. The look of consternation followed by a knowing half smile on her face was worth all the cloak and dagger secrecy. She feigned indifference albeit with little success. We spent hours talking or rather she spent hours talking about a rubbish boy band she fancied and I watched her intently. It was nearly midnight when she realised how it late it was and although I was loathe to leave I did not wish to press my newfound welcome. We bid our goodbyes but of course with a petty argument and with the promise of seeing each other in the early morning hours of the following day. We spend our time together exploring and sightseeing in the harbour city. It was loads of good fun. Then the day I had been dreading eventually came to be, it was time for me to leave. What man is more unfortunate than the one that had once tasted paradise only to know what he is missing?

Although it was time for me to leave I wanted to leave her with something to remember me by. A token of my affection. This turned out not to be one of the best ideas I have conceived in recent memory. On the last day, over eager to make the most of the time I had left with her, I pressed her for chance of escorting her to her place of study. Again not my brightest moment, for I pressed too hard and she took offence with my re fusal to accept her declination. Tempestuous and strong minded as I knew her to be I should have known better. I was left sitting by my lonesome in the lounge of her home, this was the extent of all I had achieved through my brash discourse. Not to be bested by a temperamental young lass I returned hours later to unceremoniously handover my gift to her sister. The brewing storm finally broke when our belladonna returned home to find my gift waiting for her. Naturally she called demanding I take it back and naturally I refused. In hindsight I could have orchestrated the events to have played out so much better. But highsight was not a leisure I had at the time so I stumbled. Time passed and our petty skirmish is all but forgotten save for this account of our tale. I write this tale here for you dear reader to take heed and learn from my missteps. Sometimes an unrelenting pursuit can become a double edged sword. I often catch myself wondering what may have been had I not imposed so impolitely on that day. If you, dear reader, take anything away from this story take this, always respect and listen to your belladonna. In the matters of the heart a conquest is not something to be conquered but something to be gently won over with patience and understanding. Pursue desire but pursue in good measure. Good hunting.

SPOTS

Self Love

the love that really counts

I dated this girl once; a friend of mine set us up on a blind date, because she thought we would really hit it off. I picked her up from her place, and we made chit chat on the way to a coffee at Seahouse. It was nice, and she was pretty too.

otherwise.

She talked about her backstabbing friends who are mean to her at times, yet somehow she is still friends with them. She talked of the lousy university where she is studying something she clearly doesn’t like, but still goes there anyway. She kept talking of how ‘fat’ she is, and how she needed to lose weight, when she actually looked kind of amazing, sitting opposite to me.

Loving yourself enough to abandon what makes you unhappy doesn’t make you selfish, despite what some people may tell you. It is possibly, the best favor you can do for yourself. Life is too short to be lived on someone else’s terms, don’t you think?

Don’t we all deserve to be happy? Why can’t we love ourselves enough to leave behind the twofaced, mean friends we have? Why can’t we respect our lives enough to leave what makes us We sat down, ordered a couple of drinks, and unhappy, and do something we love? Why can’t started talking about each other. I asked her we accept our flaws and be content with how we what she does, where she is from, what her look? aspirations were. The conversation was great, until she started talking about the things that If you can’t see something good about yourself made her unhappy; the university she is in the mirror, get a better mirror. Stare a little studying at, her friends and family, her body. We longer. If you can’t see what is beautiful in you, spent a good four hours or so at the table, and how do you expect others to? That critical family the more I talked to her, the more I realized how member, that judgmental friend – they’re all background noise. Static. much of an unhappy person she was.

We ended our coffee, and I dropped her off at her place. I said I will give her a call sometime, but to be honest, I had no intention of dating her again. On my way back home, I thought to myself of how she could stand all of that unhappiness. It dawned on me that all of her problems were just extensions of a much bigger problem; she didn’t love herself enough. Life can be kind of cruel at times. Just when you feel good about yourself, it acts like an utter scumbag and throws you off a metaphorical cliff or worse. But, let’s face it. The more we allow life to be a scumbag, it shall stay that way until Image credits: Gala darling (galadarling.com)

I am of the conviction that self-love is the kind of love that really counts, because at the end of the day, you are all you have, and all you can fully count on. Not your friends or your family – you! Your life begins from the day you realize you are the center of your universe, and if you can’t appreciate the wonder that is yourself, you can’t blame the universe for falling apart around you either. The universe doesn’t owe you anything. So, love and respect yourself enough to walk away from whomever or whatever it is that is rotting away your happiness and take charge of your own life. Because, no one else will do it for you.
