DIA Annual report 2015/16

12 months of dia Dozens of events, lots of wonderful encounters, old friends and new partners, stable aims and surprising challenges, successful projects and mistakes we can learn from, realised plans and future dreams‌ ‌ just like in the past 16 years of the existence of DIA, throughout the 2015/16 academic year we gained plenty of new experience. This year again we focused on further developing our programs in the fields of debate culture, social innovation, organisational development and we experimented how social campaigns work. Meanwhile we did our best to give a chance to young people in Hungary to explore the diversity of the world, develop their skills and contribute to our common future.

our mission We strive to live in a world where all young people can find their own niche and their community. In order to achieve this, we focus our work on how to empower young people to feel responsible about the future, to gain new experiences and knowledge about the world, to learn to have a say in what matters to them and participate in problem solving as creative thinkers.

What our future will look like depends largely on the young people who wish to have an impact on it in a few years time. They need to be prepared for this role today c

debate culture

We have been teaching debate culture since 2008. Debating gives a chance to young people learn in a playful way, it develops communication skills, fosters tolerance in a community and plays an important role in decision making and in the search for innovative ideas. While young people learn how to debate, they also learn how to construct arguments and solve problems in a constructive way.

LOVESPEECH

CITIZEN RIGHTS

A joint initiative of DIA and the French Institute in Budapest that helped young people to acquire effective communication and persuasion skills. Through various activities the participants were taught about public speaking and reasoning, were shown ways to see through simplistic and claptrap thoughts and practiced how to serve positive values and community cases through argumentation.

During the course of the interactive classes, students learned more about democratic rights in an innovative way. They participated in thought provoking discussions, debated on the limits of freedom and listened to personal stories of immigrants about living in a country where the state does not protect one’s rights. This international project was realised in partnership with 12 European organisations. https://citizenrights.euroalter.com

social

innovation

Young people easily get excited about the world of start-ups and social innovation but a lot of them are helpless about how to turn their world-changing motivation into a smart idea. The methodology of social innovation provides ample opportunities to involve young people in solving social problems and develop their skills necessary for future success: problem solving, creativity, planning, teamwork and effective communication.

Youth2Youth 2.0

speak smart

A competition where talent and innovation meet social reality. The aim of Youth2Youth is to encourage the participating teams to come up with innovative solutions to make the life of disadvantaged youth better and provide them with opportunities. The competing teams of Y2Y have developed 25 different action plans in the last 2 years, several of them are in the process of being realised.

The aim of this initiative is to develop the problem solving skills of high school students. In the first phase of the project the participants searched for local problems, analysed them and elaborated creative action plans. Some of the best ideas involved to turn a whole classroom with unhealthy chairs into a one full of exercise balls, a mobile application for their school and a guerrilla gardening action to redecorate the streets of their city.

“We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them. Albert Einstein

The youths of today will have to solve the social problems, and deal with the economic crises and the environmental challenges of tomorrow. It is important to give them a chance, provide them with knowledge and pay attention to NIGHT them so that they become good GUERILLAS problem solvers. The young Guerrilla gardening people participating in the actions to redecorate social innovation projects the city of Salgótarján. of DIA developed a total of 40 action plans so far.

40 ideas

ROLLING ROOM A special classroom where students don’t sit on uncomfortable chairs but on exercise balls. Thus they not only become cleverer but fitter and healthier too during classes.

FORTÉLY SÁTOR A portable escape room for disadvantaged kids to give them the the sense of achievement.

PIRAMID A special board game preparing youngters for the challenges ahead of them. MAGAM VADON An outdoor experiential learning program designed specifically for children living in foster homes.

community

service

While the 50 hours community service made obligatory for all left high schools in a bit of a shock, increasingly more institutions recognise the educational potential of service learning and volunteering. Helping others gives students a chance to learn more about the world, gain experience, get to know each other and themselves and to get a sense of helping the others.

otp Service Learning Model School As part of a long-time partnership with OTP Bank, DIA continued to help the 9 graders of a large secondary school in Budapest to get a first experience in service learning. As a first step, the students chose from different activities and host organisations (helping at an animal shelter, an orphanage, an old people’s home, fundraising etc.), did the service activity and then reflected on their experiences.

Research on service learning practices Which are the most important values and skills for a teacher to have in order to be successful? How are all these related to the teacher’s thoughts about democracy and the way how he or she would manage community service activities with the students? We asked 200 teachers in the framework of a research project held in cooperation with a Global Gap Year student from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill Campus.

organisational

development

DIA providing organizational development services

DeMo The aim of the project was the capacity building of 12 Hungarian civil society organisations. The idea was to share knowledge, exchange experiences and learn from each other. During the course of the project several trainings, professional meetings and study visits were held and a blog was established collecting the dilemmas and good practices of how to develop disadvantaged children successfully. www.demoblog.hu

Throughout its 16 years of existence, DIA gained useful skills and know-how in the fields of strategic planning, financial management, non-profit communication, volunteer management and fundraising. We are proud to have worked with a number of civil society organisations and social initiatives every year. Our services include trainings, workshops and consultacy. In the last 12 months, we worked together with Tanoda Platform, Pillar Foundation, the Mentor Programme of ELTE AJK, KMonitor, OFF Biennåle and the Independent Students’ Parliament and many others.

innovative

teaching methods

We believe that learning can and should be a positive experience for both the students and the teachers. That is why we are constantly searching and learning those methods that make this happen within or outside of the schools. Each and every DIA project includes the development of new methods and we seek new ways to further improve good practices and techniques. Furthermore, we constantly seek the opportunity to share our knowledge and methods with others.

alternative lessons

hello professor

A new book that introduces methods and techniques that are effective in developing and supporting disadvantaged children with learning difficulties. The book is the result of a concentrated team work of experienced young professionals and is aimed for teachers and special educators who face the difficulties of working with these students on a daily basis. The book can be downloaded from the DIA website: http://i-dia.org/#kiadvanyaink

A pilot initiative tackling an acute problem: there are many amazing young lecturers at universities who did not get any training nor practice in innovative modern teaching methods that are efficient in knowledge transfer, in motivating students and in turning seminars into laboratories of experiential learning. The Hello Professor project offers teaching methodology workshops for young faculty members. We are currently cooperating with the Mentor Programme of ELTE AJK (the Law School of ELTE University in Budapest).

study room - campaign

our media impact

290 000

The right for education is a fundamental human right but in today’s Hungary more than one hundred thousand children live in an environment where they have little or no chance to learn basic skills. If this does not change, by the next decade there will be a new generation in Hungary which will not be able to contribute to shaping the future of our society because of their lack of proper education. The aim of our ’Study Room’ campaign was to emphasise that this problem doesn’t affect only the ones living in extreme poverty: we will all pay a high price for the neglect and its outcomes. A portable installation was designed to sensitise the general public to the circumstances of youths living in extreme poverty. A website was set up listing the NGO’s combatting extreme poverty and fighting for inclusion through education. www.tanuloszoba.eu
