summer Time!
Hello Italy! My name is Aardavanen and I’m from India. I enjoy going to school but I love the two month-long summer vacation. I do so many interesting activities. I have so much free time for my hobbies, especially reading and playing the guitar. During my summer holidays my family plans a nice holiday all together. We visit interesting places and learn many new things. During our summer vacations we have visited the mountains of Himachal Pradesh, the desert areas in Rajasthan and the seaside in Tamil Nadu. When we go to different places in the country we eat the local dishes, and buy the local spices and other specialities to use at home. I like to take photographs of the beautiful landscape and the local people in the different places we visit. I have an interesting collection of photographs. I also like collecting magnets of the main sites of the places we go. The fridge in the kitchen is covered from top to bottom with magnets. We also visit our grandparents who live in Nainital, in the hills of Uttarakhand, in the North of India. We usually have trips to the different National Parks and to the Naini Lake. In the summer Nainital attracts a lot of foreign tourists for its natural beauties. Visiting our grandparents is special because they adore my brother and me and pamper us a lot. I always look forward to my summer vacation as it is fun. What about you? How do you spend your summer holidays? Glossary: Spices = spezie Magnet = calamita ttom = tappezzato Covered from top to bo Foreign = straniero Pamper = viziare

LESSON N. 1 The British are punctual. Being late is strange and, in some cases, is considered to be rude. If you are late for an appointment, you must contact the people who are waiting for you. Also, it is less rude to be late to a dinner party at someone’s home than it is to be late to a public meeting (such as dinner at a restaurant). Never jump lines, known as “queues” in UK. Standing patiently in the queue is a normal part of British culture.

SUNSHINE OR ADVENTURE?
Hi! My name is Emily and I live in New York, USA. Last year I went on vacation to the seaside in Southern Spain with my best friends Susan and Lara. We stayed in a four-star hotel which had two wonderful swimming pools. We really enjoyed ourselves and we got great suntans! This year Susan is going on vacation with her family to Turkey and Lara wants to go on an adventure holiday in South America. She doesn’t really like lazy holidays because she likes exploring new places and learning new things. For me, a holiday means relaxing on the beach, sunbathing and reading a book. I have to make up my mind by next week because we need to book the flights and the accommodation. It will cost $1,500 to go to South America but much less for two weeks in Greece. What kind of holiday do you like? Do you prefer relaxing or exploring?

The little mermaid
Far out in the ocean the water is as blue as the petals of the loveliest cornflower, and as clear as the purest glass. But it is very deep too. The most marvelous trees and flowers grow down there and all sorts of fish, large and small, dart among the branches. On the deepest spot in the ocean there is the palace of the sea King. Its walls are made of coral and its high pointed windows of amber, but the roof is made of mussel shells that open and shut with the tide, and every shell holds glistening pearls. The sea King was a widower and he lived with his old mother and his daughters. They were six lovely girls, but the youngest was the most beautiful of them all. Her skin was as soft and tender as a rose petal, and her eyes were as blue as the deep sea, but like all the others she had no feet. Her body ended in a fish tail. The whole day long they played in the palace, down in the great halls where live flowers grew on the walls. When the windows were open the fish swam in right up to the little princesses to eat out of their hands and let themselves be petted. Outside the palace was a big garden, with flaming red and deep-blue trees. The youngest princess was an unusual child, quiet and wistful and she loved to hear about the world of humans up above them. "When you are fifteen," her grandmother said, "you will swim up out of the ocean and sit on the rocks in the moonlight to watch the great ships sailing by. You will see woods and towns, too."
32
"Oh, how I do wish I were fifteen!" she said. "I know I shall love that world up there and all the people who live in it." And at last she was fifteen. "Good-bye," she said, and up she went through the water, as light and as sparkling as a bubble. The sun had just gone down, the air was mild and fresh and the sea calm. A great ship was sailing and there was music and singing on the ship. The little mermaid swam right up to the window of the main cabin, and she could see so many brilliantly dressed people inside. The handsomest of them all was a young Prince with big dark eyes. He was young, no more than sixteen years old. It was his birthday and that was the reason for all the celebration. Oh, how handsome the young Prince was! He laughed, and he smiled and he shook people’s hands, while the music rang out in the perfect evening. It got very late, but the little mermaid could not take her eyes off the ship and the handsome Prince.

MOUNTAiN CRAZY!
Hi! I’m Pat and I’m from Bath in the south-west of England. My love for the mountains started when I was 5 years old on our first family ski holiday to Austria. My parents are crazy about skiing in winter and about hiking in summer. So we usually spend two weeks in summer and part of our Christmas holidays in the mountains. I definitely prefer the mountains to the seaside. Well! A summer holiday in the mountains means no crowded places, no sleepless nights in airless hotel rooms, no queues and no traffic jams! But lots of fantastic scenery, beautiful views of green trees, wildflowers, streams, clean fresh air, and tons of varied activities. In winter we usually like skiing and last year I tried snowboarding but in summer we like trying new activities every year: mountain biking, rock climbing, walking and hiking. Last summer my parents took me and my brother to a fantastic tree climbing adventure park. It was amazing!!!! Are there mountains near your home town? What can you do and see there? Do you like going to the mountains?

THE TALE OF THE BAMBOO CUTTER
One day a poor bamboo cutter is cutting bamboo when he finds a tiny little child the size of his thumb in the bamboo.
She's incredibly beautiful so he takes her home and raises her with his wife. Later the couple discovers that she's a princess named Kaguya-hime. She's from the Moon - her people sent her to the Earth to protect her from a Celestial war. The father begins to discover nuggets of gold in every bamboo he cuts. The family becomes rich and Princess Kaguya-hime becomes a beautiful woman. The family tries to hide her beauty but soon there are princes from all over the country asking to marry her. She rejects them all. Soon the Emperor himself asks for her hand in marriage. She rejects the Emperor because
she wants to go back to the Moon. Finally the Moon people come to take the Princess in a royal procession from space. The Emperor sends his men to stop the Moon people but they are blinded by a strange light. The Princess writes the Emperor a letter and gives him a special present - the elixir of immortality. If he drinks it he will live forever.
54
The Moon people put a special feather robe on the Princess that erases her memory of Earth. She departs forever. When the Emperor receives the letter and the gift, he is too depressed to drink the elixir of immortality. He doesn't want to live without her. The Emperor writes her a letter. He tells his men to burn the letter and the elixir of immortality on Japan's highest peak - so that it might reach the Moon. The men follow his orders. To their surprise, once they light the elixir of immortality on fire it never stops burning.
This is how Mount Fuji became a volcano and the name Mount Fuji comes from the Japanese word for immortality “不死 fushi”. The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter is from the 10th century and it's Japan's oldest surviving story. It's also considered one of the world's earliest science fiction stories.

LESSON N. 3 Before you cross the road you need to look right, left and then right again because in Britain people drive on the left-hand side of the road. So remember that traffic comes from your right-hand side.
Talking about the weather serves as an ice-breaker. When a British person meets a stranger a ‘safe’ subject of discussion is the weather. The function of the conversation is to initiate contact between two individuals. Remember, weather in Britain can be very variable.

A great summer HOLIDAY
Hi! My name is Alex and I live in Cambridge. I have just come back from the greatest summer holiday! It was so fantastic I never wanted it to end. I spent eight days in Paris, France. My cousins, Andrew and Jane, went with us. We had a beautiful hotel room in the Latin Quarter. It was very comfortable and it had a balcony with a wonderful view. We visited many famous tourist places. My favourite was the Louvre. I am very interested in art, so that was a special experience for me. The museum is huge, you could spend weeks there. We spent the entire morning! My dad got very tired walking around the museum and every now and then he needed to take some breaks and rest. We had a very good guide and I was fascinated by Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo. We took long walks along the river Seine and sat in very elegant cafes. The French food we ate was delicious. My dad said that the wines were tasty, too. Andrew’s favourite part of the vacation was the hotel breakfast. He loved the croissants! We had so much fun that we’re already planning our next vacation! I would like to go to Rome next year! I have never been to Italy. What about you? What is the best city you have ever visited? What was it like? What do you usually like visiting in a city? Which town or country would you like to visit? Do you usually travel with your family or with your friends?

GUESS THE TITLE Sometimes, the difficult part of a movie to translate is the title. For example the title of the film “MAD CITY” with John Travolta and Dustin Hoffman is not translated “CITTA’ MATTA” in Italian but “ASSALTO ALLA NOTIZIA” as the film is about the sensationalism of American newspapers.

Mr. Phileas Fogg is a wealthy man who lives in London and he spends most of his time at the Reform Club, an exclusive social organization. He has a new domestic servant, a Frenchman named Passepartout. One day at the Reform Club, he makes a bet with the other club members that it is possible to go around the world by train and steamer in just eighty days, and that he himself can do it. They bet 20,000 pounds. So Mr. Fogg and Passepartout leave right away to circumnavigate the globe. Glossar y: enestante Wealthy = ricco/b re una scommessa Makes a bet = fa Bid = scommettere ediatamente Right away = imm vapore Steamer = nave a to d’arresto Warrant = manda
At the Suez Canal, where Mr.Fogg and Passepartout will take a steamer to Bombay, there is a detective named Fix waiting for them. Mr Fogg has been accused of robbing the Bank of England. Fix follows Fogg and Passepartout on the steamer Mongolia to India, where he hopes to receive a warrant to arrest Fogg as the robber.
78
The steamer arrives in Bombay two days earlier, but the arrest warrant has not yet arrived. While waiting for the train that will take them across India from Bombay to Calcutta, Passepartout visits a Hindu temple, hoping to see some of the city's sights before they rush off again. But he doesn’t know that because he is a Christian, he can’t enter the temple; in addition, he enters it with shoes on, which is also not allowed. Fortunately he escapes the anger of the priests and arrives at the train station in time. On the train, Fogg and Passepartout meet Sir Francis Cromarty, an Englishman who lives in India. Passepartout spends most of the time looking out the window at the wild jungles of India. But suddenly, the train stops because there are 50-miles of track that is not yet finished, and passengers must find their own transportation to the next station where they can board a train again. In a nearby village, Fogg buys an elephant from an Indian man and hires a Parsee guide to lead them. The group, now including Sir Francis, starts off on the elephant, and after camping for a night they meet a group of tribal Indians preparing to sacrifice a young woman, the wife of a Prince who has just died. Fogg decides to try and save her. Passepartout disguises himself as the dead prince's corpse and manages to jump up and grab Aouda before they can throw her on the funeral pyre. They arrive in Calcutta, but are immediately arrested. Fix arrests them because Passepartout broke the law in Bombay by entering the Hindu temple. Fogg pays a large sum of money, Passepartout is free and they get on the steamer to Hong Kong. Fix follows them because he knows that Hong Kong is the last bit of British territory they step into, and therefore the last chance to arrest Fogg.
