DOMESTIC VIOLENCE – An exhibition by Amnesty International Thanks to Amnesty International and to Celia López Carballido, we have an exhibition in our school in Ribeira which paints a global picture of abuses women suffer all over the world. Let us gain some insight into this subject. DISCUSSION: OUR CONTEXT –Take 5 minutes to discuss these questions in groups of 3. 1. What comes to mind when you hear the phrase “domestic violence”? 2. Does domestic violence often hit the headlines in our country? 3. What would you do if you knew there was domestic violence in the house next door? 4. What are the main causes of domestic violence? 5. Why do you think victims of domestic violence stay in the relationship for so long? 6. Is domestic violence a subject that is largely swept under the carpet or a taboo? 7. Do you think alcohol plays a large part in domestic violence? Adapted from http://www.esldiscussions.com/d/domestic_violence.html
RESEARCH: AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL – Use the laptops to visit Amnesty International’s website (https://www.amnesty.org/en). Go to “Search” and type in the words “domestic violence”. Take a moment to read some of the posts and make some notes. Be prepared to share your findings with the rest of the class. VISIT THE EXHIBITION – Let us now go downstairs and visit the exhibition. You will actually find the posters in Galician and English. You are welcome to read either or both. Before the questions, you have the title of the poster to help you find the answers faster. 1. WOMEN AND HUMAN RIGHTS – What is “Women’s Van”? 2. DECLARATION ABOUT THE ELIMINATION OF VIOLENCE – Where are women forbidden to appear in public and therefore girls are sent to buy food? 3.
