MINDFULNESS AT THE LETCHWORTH CENTRE “If you really want to change your life and open up opportunities, learning to practice mindfulness is one of the most dramatically effective things you can do …” Mental Health Foundation Mindfulness is a gift that you owe yourself! It can immeasurably enrich your life. Mindfulness offers a way of changing the way you perceive the world, yourself and others. It presents a way of being which involves developing objective, non-judgemental awareness of what is happening in your internal and external space – in your thoughts, feelings and physical sensations. People who practice mindfulness report: • • • • • •

Reduced stress and a greater sense of calm An enhanced sense of wellbeing Improved self-esteem and greater confidence Being less distressed by physical and psychological symptoms Altered pain levels and an enhanced ability to cope with chronic pain Better ability to focus and concentrate

Whilst it has its roots in Buddhist meditation, the term as it is used today refers to a series of well-researched techniques largely based upon an 8-week mindfulness programme developed in the 1980’s in America. MBSR is the original, classic course that brought mindfulness into the mainstream, while Mindfulness for Stress and Wellbeing is one of a series of highly-regarded programmes based in part on MBSR and developed by Breathworks, an established UK-based organisation.

Our tutors

Helena Martin is a BACP-accredited counsellor who has practised meditation for many years. She holds a Postgraduate Certificate from The University of Bangor in Teaching Mindfulness-Based programmes and has run MBSR courses at the Letchworth Centre since 2012. Simon McKibbin has been teaching mindfulness for 23 years to business and the general public. He is an Advanced Teacher of Mindfulness (developed by Breathworks) and is a qualified .b teacher of Mindfulness in Schools. He is an Independent Focusing trainer, has trained in NLP and Developmental Behavioural Modelling (DBM) and is a certified Non-Violent Communication trainer.

14 weeks - last class on 13 December Half-term 25 October The exercise ball is a wonderful Pilates tool for improving core strength and developing the abdominal and back muscles. Exercising ‘on the ball’ – which continually moves slightly beneath you as you work – can also increase overall flexibility and mobility. And it’s such fun to do! (You will need to provide your own ball.)
