THE LETCHWORTH CENTRE FOR HEALTHY LIVING
CELEBRATING 35 YEARS
Classes, Classes, Workshops, Workshops, Complementary Complementary Therapies Therapies & & Counselling Counselling SEPTEMBER - DECEMBER 2019 Charity Reg. No. 295219 Established 1984
CELEBRATING
I
t’s our 35th birthday – difficult to believe that so many years have passed since we first opened in a Letchworth dining room! It’s not been easy – but today we are one of the oldest centres for complementary approaches to health in the country…
Roberta Meldrum Director
Starting with a single meditation class back in 1985, we now run more than 80 classes a week throughout the year. Our counselling service –which was set up as a response to the need of our clients – now delivers over 6,700 sessions a year. And our complementary therapy clinic, with its highly skilled practitioners, has grown beyond its purely homeopathic beginnings to include a wide range of mainstream therapies.
We are passionate about the benefits that complementary approaches to health can bring to people of all ages – reflected particularly in the growth of our recentlydeveloped programmes for young and old: Mindfulness in Schools and the awardwinning Positive Movement programme. Raising awareness of those benefits is – and has been – our overriding aim and the purpose of all our work.
1984-94
Highlights of these 35 years
• Moved to the then derelict Rosehill • Sir Nigel Hawthorne became our Patron • Nationally acclaimed programme of accredited courses for health professionals developed
2 2
1995-2004
• Won a national award for “Greatest contribution to the community” • Shortlisted for a national award by the Prince’s Foundation for Integrated Health
2005-2014
• Won a second national award for our contribution to the community • Hosted the county’s largest Carers’ Fayre • Together with statutory, health and education partners ran a T’ai Chi-based Falls Prevention Programme
35 YEARS
Our plan over the next few years is to raise money for – and build – muchneeded extensions to our classroom and clinic buildings as well as a link between them. Planners have approved it: the new build would incorporate improved disabled access to both our buildings; new toilet facilities; additional ground-floor clinic rooms; facilities for community use and, perhaps above all, facilities which offer increased safeguarding for the very young and the older and more vulnerable. We hugely appreciate your loyalty– and want to thank you for your continued support. With very best wishes from all of us at the Centre,
Roberta Meldrum Director
2015-2019
• Developed a wellbeing programme for older people, Positive Movement, delivered throughout Hertfordshire and commissioned by NHS Luton • Positive Movement chosen as national winner in the Prevention & Self Care category at the 2018 Complementary Therapy Awards • Developed a Mindfulness in Schools programme which we run in schools and nurseries in North Herts and Stevenage • Opened a charity shop to support both these initiatives • Centre established as a focal point and meeting hub for many local organisations

CREDENTIALS
The Counselling Service is an organisational member of the British Association for Psychotherapy and Counselling (www.bacp.co.uk tel 01455 883300) and operates according to their guidelines. All our counsellors hold current DBS (CRB) checks, professional liability insurance, and all are individual members of a professional governing body.
Deciding to see a counsellor is a huge step and trying to find the right professional can be a daunting process. At the Centre, we have a large team of counsellors with many different specialisms and we take time to match you with the professional who we feel would best meet your needs. The service we offer is open-ended: your counselling will finish when you are ready to finish. There’s no need for a referral – simply contact us by phone, email or in person – and we will take it from there. Sessions are 50-60 minutes in length, and their frequency is tailored to your needs.
LOW-COST SERVICE
Our Low-Cost Service is designed for people in difficult financial circumstances, on a low wage, or in receipt of benefits. It is largely staffed by trainee counsellors who are in their final years of study at a variety of universities and work under close supervision within the Service. Some are already qualified and are working towards a Master’s Degree or accreditation.

PRANAYAMA, MANTRA & MEDITATION - THE ART OF BREATHING WELL
Kate Tomlinson 500 hour MindFlowYoga Qualified Yoga Teacher 13 weeks - last class 10 December Half-term 29 October Pranayama (the control of breathing) is the traditional technique of slow and rhythmical breathing. Research has shown that positive breath control can have a direct effect on our wellbeing and is effective in reducing anxiety. With conscious breathing, the body relaxes and the mind quietens, while the breath becomes deeper and more efficient. The technique alleviates stress by switching on the body’s relaxation response and reducing its fight or flight mechanism. This powerful course will take you through the breathing process step by step, teaching you to use awareness and mindfulness to alter your normal breathing habits and build your lung capacity – thereby bringing wide-ranging health benefits, both physical and psychological.
