THE LETCHWORTH CENTRE FOR HEALTHY LIVING
CLASSES, CLINIC & COUNSELLING APRIL-JULY 2015
Charity Reg.No. 295219 Established 1984
2014 Winner ‘Outstanding Contribution to the Community’
Our Mission
To alleviate suffering by working to increase the understanding and availability of the benefits of complementary approaches to health and wellbeing.

Welcome to the Letchworth Centre For Healthy Living We are a pioneering and award-winning charity – a centre of excellence –unique in the size and scope of the programmes we offer to enhance health and wellbeing and address pain and chronic illness. Our 8-acre grounds with its ancient pine trees and century-old buildings provide a very special atmosphere of tranquillity and support.
How can the Centre help you? At the Centre you can be confident of working with highly qualified and experienced health care professionals on whose expertise you can rely. We offer: • A wide range of complementary therapies including osteopathy, acupuncture, naturopathy, homeopathy, hypnotherapy, massage and shiatsu. • A large counselling service – and a low-cost scheme – which works with individuals, couples, families, and children to help them cope with emotional and life problems such as stress, depression and anxiety. • A programme of over 80 weekly classes for all ages and abilities as well as for those recovering from surgery and serious illness – including a huge choice of Yoga and Pilates, T’ai Chi, Alexander Technique and Mindfulness. • A free lunchtime programme of talks. • A programme of workshops which provide introductions to a rich range of approaches to wellbeing.
The effectiveness of complementary approaches People using Centre services have reported benefits and improvement to their physical and mental health – which have frequently been life-changing.
Working with the Community Often in partnership with statutory and voluntary organisations, we actively seek funding from grant-making trusts and other sources of financial support to underpin the costs of programmes for older people and for carers. We are grateful to the NHS in Hertfordshire, to Hertfordshire County Council, to Comic Relief, to Hertfordshire Community Foundation and to North Hertfordshire District Council, amongst others, for their support. You can now book online at www.letchworthcentre.org

We need your help... As a charity, we cover our running costs from income generated by our classes, clinic and counselling services. However, this alone does not meet either the large capital expenditure involved in ensuring that our very special 100-year old buildings and large site continue to be watertight, sound and otherwise fit for purpose. Nor does our income cover the development or delivery of the bespoke programmes we run and hope to expand on for older people, carers and other vulnerable groups in our community. In 2014, our 30th birthday year, our Centre was recognised by a prestigious national award ‘Outstanding Contribution to the Community’ by CAM, the professional journal for complementary practitioners. If you have benefited from – or are benefiting from – our work, if you want to help others who are less fortunate to gain from that work, if you want to help us to continue to promote the inclusion of complementary approaches in the NHS national strategy – please consider making a donation – or even leaving a gift in your will. We are a beacon of hope and help for many – and a national model for the delivery of complementary approaches to health – but we need help to enable us to continue.
How you can help us to continue to develop our services – an easy way to give Doing your online shopping at any of over 400 major retailers (including Amazon, John Lewis, ebay) via the portal of TheGivingMachine and choosing us as your nominated charity will cost you nothing – but would give us a percentage of your purchase price. It would take no more than a few minutes to register at www.thegivingmachine.co.uk – and after that all you would need to do is enter your chosen shopping website via TheGivingMachine.

COMPLEMENTARY HEALTH CLINIC
NEW! ACUPUNCTURE
ENERGY PSYCHOLOGY HOMEOPATHY & ENERGY MEDICINE Francis Treuherz MA RSHom FSHom Phil Mollon, PhD
Tim Stillwell BAc MBAcC Acupuncture has been practised in China and the East for some 2,000 years. Human health, according to acupuncture theory, is dependant upon the smooth flow of the body’s vital force (called ‘chi’ or ‘qi’) which moves through channels in the body called meridians. The insertion of fine needles at points along these meridians initiates the body’s own healing response. Acupuncture is well known for its treatment of painful conditions but in reality its scope is a lot wider. Our patients have reported benefits for a broad range of conditions including IBS, headaches, backache, sciatica, arthritis and musculo-skeletal problems such as RSI and tennis elbow; PMT and menopausal problems; prostate problems; Bell’s Palsy and trigeminal neuralgia; stress, insomnia and anxiety– as well as conditions which have defied a conventional diagnosis.
8
Energy Psychology methods work with acupressure points and related energy centres on the body, whilst at the same time attending to the thoughts and emotions in the person’s mind. This calms both body and mind – and is thus often very helpful for states of stress, anxiety, physical and emotional pain, and many other forms of recurrent mental or physical discomfort. The effect is usually rapid. Such methods can be particularly helpful for those who find that ‘talking therapies’ alone do not bring about the desired change. The therapeutic work is enhanced by the use of muscle signalling, using methods derived from kinesiology – whereby the practitioner presses lightly on the client’s wrist whilst relevant thoughts and experiences are brought to mind. Apart from this light touch on the wrist, there is no physical contact between client and practitioner – the client is guided to tap or press their own energy centres.
Homeopathy is a system of medicine which stimulates our body’s own capacity to heal itself through the use of greatly diluted natural substances whose effects are painstakingly matched with the symptoms we ourselves are experiencing. It takes account of the mental and emotional as well as the physical aspects of our condition and is without sideeffects.. The homeopath chooses his medicines according to a rule of similars, that the medicines cause in a healthy person similar symptoms to those they will cure in a sick person. Patients treated with homeopathy report benefits in both chronic and acute skin, respiratory and digestive disorders as well as in migraine and arthritic conditions.

MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE Mary Goodfellow
Cert MLD Therapy II and III + CDT
Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a therapy which is designed to improve the functioning of the lymphatic system and help rid the body of excess fluid and toxins. This is achieved through gentle rhythmical movements of the skin which stimulate the contraction of the lymphatic vessels that carry substances vital to the body’s defence and to the removal of waste products. MLD is a key treatment for lymphoedema, venous oedema and leg ulcers, and promotes recovery from wounds, burns and plastic and other surgery. It is used during pregnancy to relieve swollen legs and ankles and during and after radiotherapy to reduce burning and skin inflammation - while patients report it to be of benefit in chronic conditions as varied as ME, fluid retention and glandular fever.

NATUROPATHY Glenys Collings RGN
Diploma in Naturopathy & Acupuncture, Post-graduate Diploma in Integrative Medicine
Naturopathy is based upon the principle that the body has an innate capacity to heal itself, given the right conditions. Always addressing the cause of a problem, the naturopath uses diet, stress management techniques and lifestyle assessment to guide you to better health. Patients with allergies, adrenal exhaustion and stress, IBS and other digestive problems, candida, menstrual and menopausal difficulties, headaches and skin conditions have reported significant benefits from naturopathic treatment.

COMPLEMENTARY HEALTH CLINIC
Complementary Health Clinic Touch is one of the most basic human acts, affecting the body, the emotions and the mind. Used therapeutically in the form of massage, it stimulates blood circulation and brings oxygen and nutrients to our tissues and internal organs, while carrying away waste products which cause inflammation and ill-health. It is used to loosen tight muscles, dissolve muscle knots and improve mobility of limbs and other parts of the body after strain or injury. And it soothes and relaxes the nerve endings which are located just beneath the skin – bringing deep tranquillity during times of stress. At the Centre, we offer many types of massage. Which form you choose is often more a matter of personal preference than clinical necessity.
MASSAGE Jay Chandarana MAR MFHT CNHC Rebecca Ingarfill MFHT Sophie Postollec Swedish Mass. Level 3, Deep Tissue Cert, Indian Head Cert
David Sheppard BA Hons, MFHT, MAR SWEDISH MASSAGE combines slow and
gentle techniques with vigorous ones and forms the basis of all forms of massage listed below.
AROMATHERAPY MASSAGE uses
appropriately chosen fragrant essential oils from plants which are applied to the skin during the massage for all-round therapeutic benefit.
DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE is recommended
in cases of physical injury, chronic pain or for people regularly involved in heavy physical activity. Working deeply within muscles and connective tissue, it helps break up adhesions which can cause pain and restricted movement and can bring long-lasting relief. 10
HOT STONE MASSAGE uses warmed smooth basalt stones to apply deep heat to key points of the body. This eases tight muscles and produces profound relaxation. INDIAN HEAD MASSAGE has been practised in India for over a thousand years. This wonderfully relaxing and at the same time energising massage for the head, face, neck and shoulders relieves stress and imparts a sense of wellbeing. WARM BAMBOO MASSAGE uses hollow bamboo canes to introduce warmth to ease muscle tension and aid relaxation NATURAL LIFT FACIAL
Uses massage techniques to improve circulation and disperse waste products producing a lovely skin glow.

OSTEOPATHY & CRANIAL OSTEOPATHY
REFLEXOLOGY
Trevor Cox BSc (Hons) Ost Med DO

Christina Raven BMus DO MSCC FSCC Osteopathy is a system of gentle manipulation for the diagnosis and treatment of structural and mechanical problems within the body which can arise from injury, bad posture or stress. It is especially effective for neck, back and mobility problems, but also has general health benefits. Cranial Osteopathy is a branch of osteopathy which works on the bones of the skull. Extremely gentle and comforting, it is sought after by parents of babies suffering from infantile colic and sleep problems who frequently report dramatic relief following treatment. Young children suffering from hyperactivity, as well as from sleep, behavioural and learning difficulties appear to experience significant benefits as well. At the Centre, we have, in addition, had encouraging feedback from patients with difficult-to-treat conditions such as tinnitus, sinusitis, migraine, trigeminal neuralgia, Bell’s Palsy and tic douloureux.
“Having seen a range of practitioners for a persistent back injury and related problems, following treatment and advice from Trevor my back problems were treated successfully.” – Patient
MAR MFHT CNHC
Foot treatments have been used in India, Egypt and China for thousands of years. Contemporary reflexology is based upon the principle that areas on the feet are linked to our internal organs and functional systems and that application of pressure to points on the feet can stimulate energy flow to the corresponding area of the body. Reflexology treatment brings a profound sense of calm and wellbeing to patients and research studies support its effectiveness in treating pre-menstrual symptoms and headaches and its benefit to people with multiple sclerosis. Patients report that migraine, asthma and digestive problems respond well to reflexology, and we have found, too, that it has been successful in helping couples with fertility problems.

Reiki Master Practitioner
Jay Chandarana MAR MFHT CNHC
Reiki – meaning ‘universal life energy’—is a form of healing developed in Japan based upon the principle that energy blockages lead to ill-health. It is believed that healing electro-magnetic energy can be transmitted through the hands of the practitioner to the areas of the body needing treatment. Patients experience Reiki as calming and deeply relaxing – and research findings suggest that it can help in pain relief, depression, anxiety, stress and fatigue.
Shiatsu - a Japanese healing approach – is based upon the meridian theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Although literally meaning ‘finger pressure’, in practice a therapist will, while the client is fully clothed, use stretching, pressure and manipulative techniques to, according to theory, remove blockages in the body’s energy system and re-establish energy flow. It is a deeply relaxing experience. Patients report that Shiatsu is of benefit in the treatment of headaches, stress and stressrelated disorders (including migraine), and is particularly useful during convalescence and to generally improve vitality.

Sports Injury and Remedial Massage have been proven to be some of the most effective methods of treating those soft tissue injuries which cause pain and restricted movement. Employing advanced deep connective tissue techniques, they can break down internal scar tissue, realign muscle fibre and encourage dispersal of waste products. They encourage healing, reduce pain and stiffness, improve circulation and increase muscle and joint flexibility and suppleness. They can, moreover, prevent additional injury by addressing existing muscle weakness. Ultrasound and infrared lamp are available on request and as appropriate.

Our team of 14 qualified counsellors come from many different backgrounds and have qualifications in various approaches, including play therapy, young people’s counselling, couple’s counselling and family therapy. Some counsellors are BACP Accredited and others are working towards their accreditation. The team includes two qualified clinical supervisors and, in addition, we have a hypnotherapist who also offers neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) and hypno-CBT. Our team of 10 trainee counsellors on placement are studying at various universities and are in their final years of training and practice under in-house supervision. Some have reached qualification and are on placement to complete to Masters Degree. Our low cost counselling, which is delivered in the most part by the counsellors on placement, is designed to give access to counselling to those people on benefits, a low wage or in difficult financial circumstances. We provide an initial assessment for each referral which is performed by a qualified counsellor. We do not impose a limit to the number of sessions but allow counselling to come to a natural end which meets the needs of the client. Throughout the counselling service as a whole, we work with many different issues including: abuse, anxiety, bereavement, depression, domestic violence, low self confidence, parent/child relationships, relationship issues, self harm, and recovery from substance misuse. All team members hold current DBS (CRB) checks and professional liability insurance. They are all individual members of a professional governing body. The counselling service as a whole is an organisational member of the British Association for Psychotherapy and Counselling (BACP) and operates according to their guidelines. Our low cost counselling service has a cost of £20 for the initial assessment and £15 for a one to one session. Regular fees are £40 for individual sessions, £50 for couples and £60 for family sessions. In addition, we are pleased to offer sessions exploring the art of communicating within relationships. Initial assessment is £35 and a course of 4-6 sessions is £50 per session.

MINDFULNESS-BASED STRESS REDUCTION (MBSR)
Helena Martin GRSM LRAM Dip Couns PGDip Mindfulness Duration 9 weeks Half-term 27 May
Mindfulness offers, quite simply, a way of changing your life. By altering the way you think and perceive the world, it makes you less stressed, better able to cope, more positive, more aware – in short, more able to appreciate yourself and your life. Now offered in schools, in management training programmes, in health care and corporate settings, it is the centrepiece of the Mental Health Foundation’s campaign to ‘Be Mindful’ www.bemindful.co.uk. Research over three decades has shown that people who complete the course report: • Being better able to relax • Being less distressed by physical and psychological symptoms • Reduced pain levels and an enhanced ability to cope with chronic pain • Reduced anxiety and depression
• Improved concentration and memory • Better sleep • Greater energy and enthusiasm for life • Improved self-esteem
