Fabulous at 50 Lifestyle with Dianna Bowes
Time to Celebrate Birthday, anniversaries, achievements at work, losing weight...these are some of the events we may celebrate. But how do we celebrate them? In most cases with food, a great meal with our loved ones. I love it! But let’s take food off the table right now... a little pun. What are some other ways to celebrate our wins? I am working with Shonda Holt: Functional Nutrition Practitioner (Nourishing Yourself ) on making some big changes to my diet and health. I have been at it for 4 months, and have learned so much. I have made some big shifts and continue to test myself. I have removed foods that I have eaten for a life time, because of digestive issues and that are just not serving me any more. And I have added delicious green smoothies and chia, something I had not even heard of before. I have also started doing 24 hour fasts, which I thought would be hard, but makes me feel great. So when Shonda said to me, I want you to celebrate how great you are doing, of course the first thing I thought of was.... fooooood.
She suggested I do something for myself. So here are my choices for celebrating me. •
Massage
•
Facial
•
Pedicure
•
Go to museum
•
Go to a movie
•
Buy myself flowers
•
Get my hair done
•
Go for a long walk in a beautiful setting
•
Spend time with someone I adore

our story Mission: To INSPIRE, EDUCATE and EMPOWER the baby boomer woman! Be Fabulous! was designed specifically to be an event magazine to be presented to our guests at the Annual Fabulous@50 Experience and Martini Party. But something magical happened! Dianna Bowes took a look around and realized there was nothing in our community that was discussing the needs of the seasoned woman. Be Fabulous!, much like the Fabulous@50 tradeshows, seminars, the meetup group and the Fabulous@50 on-line membership, filled a gap. Since 2010, Be Fabulous! has spotlighted inspirational women on it’s cover and covered topics that mid-age women want to read about. The vision of creative director, Dianna Bowes, was to publish a magazine that would be written by baby boomer women for baby boomer women. Fabulous@50 and Be Fabulous! is more than a magazine, more than a tradeshow, more than a membership, it is a community! Find out more by going to our website. www.fabulousat50.com

The Ladybird’s Kitchen by Pam Robertson
Moncton, New Brunswick
Scallop and Bacon Salad This is one of my favourite summer salads. The first time I had it was at a restaurant in Moncton, New Brunswick and I return to the same place anytime I am in Moncton because this salad is so tasty (and I’m not a huge fan of lettuce, so this is saying something). For two servings, you’ll need: 2 cups romaine or crunchy lettuce greens 1 cup fresh or frozen raspberries (divided into ¾ and ¼ cup portions) 1 tsp sugar 2 tsp balsamic vinegar 3 slices of good bacon or 1/2 cup Italian pancetta 8-10 large fresh scallops (can also use frozen)
2 Tbsp olive oil 2 cups of mixed tomatoes, cucumber, bell peppers, celery etc. to fill out the rest of the veggies Method: 1. Raspberry Vinaigrette (you can buy this or create it at home – I usually buy it to save a few minutes) Raspberry vinaigrette is made by ¾ cup of raspberries in a pot, and then mash them up with your wooden spoon, add a teaspoon of sugar, and a couple teaspoons of balsamic vinegar. Turn the heat on low to warm things up and extract the juice, and melt the sugar, then use a sieve to pull out the seeds. Save the liquid, add olive oil, some pepper, whisk it all together and voila, you’ve got dressing!
6 • Be Fabulous! eMagazine I www.fabulousat50.com I July • 2017
2. Bacon Brown bacon or pancetta in frying pan. Remove meat to paper towel and leave drippings in pan for scallops.
FAN FEEDBACK
3. Veggies Prepare your lettuce and remaining vegetables, add bacon, place them on a plate ready to serve. 3. Scallops People make it sound scary when cooking scallops, but all you need to do is tap into your sense of adventure. Make sure your scallops are not wet (dab them on paper towel), heat your pan with the saved bacon fat until it is very hot (6 to 8 depending on your stove), because that way you will create a nice crust on the outside of the scallop while having a tender melt in your mouth middle. Depending on the size of your scallops, the big ones take 2 minutes a side. Medium ones (loonie sized) are just 90 seconds. Don’t over cook them, though they do need to be properly cooked. Practice makes perfect with this but don’t worry you’ll get the hang of things. 4. Dress
Question? Do you have a favorite song you love to sing? Juanita: Coat of Many Colors Margot: Hooked on a Feeling (“Ooga Chaka, Ooga Chaka...), belted as loud as I can. Jacqueline: “I Lived” One Republic Laurel: Brown Eyed Girl, Margaritaville, American Pie, Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You Sharon: Blackeyed Peas, “I got a Feeling”. Katrina & the Waves - “Walking on Sunshine”, The Knack - “My Sharona”, Tony Basil -”Mickey” Loretta: Joy to the World Roberta: Cool Change, Love Come Down, the Remedy Pam: Depends on my mood, but lately there is a medley of “You Raise Me Up” by Josh Groban, “Imagine “by Pentatonix, and “Paddy Murphy” by Great Big Sea. All very loudly LOL.
Place your hot scallops on top of the salad, add a few decorative raspberries, drizzle with dressing and eat your heart out! This is great with some shaved parmesan on top, or a few toasted slivered almonds. Pam Robertson, Ph.D. is the food lover behind The Ladybirds’ Kitchen, and she’s on a mission to help people with food issues like diabetes, heart disease, and allergies to #EatInspired. You can reach her at 1-780-232-0083 and pam@LadybirdFiles.com.
Kay: True Colors by Cyndi Lauper and Don’t Rain On My Parade from Funny Girl currently. Joanne: I can’t say there’s any one song that I choose to sing. The best thing is that I’m choosing to sing and love joining in the chorus of many songs now.

Tea with Sue Paulson
Voices are as Unique as Cupcakes ©
You might guess from the picture that I love cupcakes (scrumptious ones made by my cousin, Colette!). I also love to hear the voices of people as they share their stories. I have heard tales of tragedy and triumph and defeat and victory. All of these voices speak to not only the resilience of the human spirit, but the uniqueness of every human experience. It’s amazing what you can learn about someone in the most ordinary of moments. My former husband was astounded one day at the local mall. While he did some shopping, I struck up a conversation with the person sitting next to me, who shared in some detail something that was going on in his life. Later, as my husband and I wandered down the mall, I mentioned what I had learned from my bench mate. He said, “But I was only gone five minutes. How in the world did you learn so much in that short time?” I replied, “I don’t know.
People just tell me stuff.” And they do – all the time. So I began to wonder why that is. Maybe it’s because I love stories. Maybe it’s because I’m willing to listen. What I know for sure is that each of us craves some undivided attention from those around us. We can’t speak up if there’s no one to listen. When I share a meal with one of my aunts in her lodge, I always ask her table partners to tell me a bit about themselves - such as the woman originally from Glasgow, Scotland. Her dad worked on a customs boats in the harbor, checking cargo on the big ships in port. Her husband was a Winnipeg soldier whom she met during the war. I delighted hearing her story in her soft, Scottish accent. These days, two things are in the way of people speaking up and speaking out. One is our fascination with technology.
8 • Be Fabulous! eMagazine I www.fabulousat50.com I July • 2017
Walk down any mall and count how many people are playing on phones or tablets - oblivious to what’s going on around them. The other challenge is our fast pace of life, which just seems to speed up more each day. We’re overscheduled and underappreciative. When was the last time you just sat and watched the world go by? When was the last time you started talking to someone you didn’t know – whether it was a store clerk or a stranger sitting next to you? Think about it – the sound of the human voice can be so healing and soothing. It’s like the best-tasting cupcake without the calories. We need each other – to care, to
listen, and most of all to confirm that we matter. So here’s my challenge – start a conversation with one person each day that enables each of you to share something that matters – whether it’s your voice of gratitude, his or her tale of woe, or something funny you just witnessed. I guarantee you’ll both walk away as richer human beings. Now that’s the icing on the cupcake! Speaker and author, Sue Paulson inspires others to claim and love their magnificence. Enhancing the lives of others by sharing her voice
Sandy D’Acey What are you looking forward to doing/creating in this next half of your life? I am looking forward to enjoying time with friends, learning French and Spanish and adding more travel to my life. I am currently successfully single, and embracing the idea of getting to know myself more deeply in this phase of my life. In addition, a project in the next few years is to build and live in a tiny house, eventually off the grid in support of sustainable environmental solutions. I’ll start in Western Canada, however the dream location is Maui. I’m also looking forward to doing the full 800km walk of The Camino in Northern Spain. I’ve completed the last 300kms in 2012 and it was magical. I learned about The Camino pilgrimage while performing on a cruise ship in Europe for 4 months. On one of the passenger tours, I assisted
the tour director to Santiago, Spain where we visited the stunning cathedral, the Santiago de Compestela. When I learned that the Way of St. James led to this cathedral, the idea of this pilgrimage sat in my heart for a decade. I planned, gathered all the gear I needed, and completed the trek in August 2012. My biggest goals are in enhancing the lives of others through 1-1 and group voice coaching programs, workshops and events, as well as guiding community singing groups. One of my greatest loves is singing and performing. As the years roll on, I have found such joy in helping others bring out their voices in a holistic way. By bringing awareness to our mental, emotional and physical impact on our voices, we can better understand ourselves in our homes, communities and the world. Our voices are incredible instruments and I would like to guide the world to sing, one voice at a time.

In what ways do you prefer to give back or pay it forward?
One thing that made all the difference in my life was my mother’s support with my
To give back, I like to spend time with seniors and leading sing-a-longs. As a singer almost all my life, music & song bring an incredible connection that defies the time that has passed. I recall spending a few months as an occasional companion to a 75 yr old woman with dementia. It was such a joy to witness the light in her eyes come through when we sang a song she knew when she was in her 30’s. Most days she struggled with knowing her name, or what she ate for lunch, or what day it was. But when she sang, her whole energy changed, and she knew every single word, knew the melody and kept time tapping her challenged legs with arthritic hands. Through many years of understanding how singing affects the body, this was no surprise AND such a delight. In the visits that followed, I could see she remembered that I was the one she sang with, and she’d lead me to the nearby music room in the care facility. What a gift! As for paying if forward, I still love to pay in advance for someone’s coffee order while at the drive-through at Tim Horton’s. I can only hope it is received the way it was given – in the light of little surprises that bring a lift in the spirit of sharing that still exists today. Other ways I pay it forward is through nurturing students of all ages with their voices. Letting them lead the way with song choice or encouraging their style as often as possible in our voice sessions is such fun!! And it ripples out into their families – on road trips or family events, or with friends for karaoke nights. Even more special are the ones who record a song for a cherished family member. If you were to share one thing that made a difference in your life, what would it be?
Madrid after Camino walk
singing. My goodness, I started when I was 4 years old, singing into a hairbrush standing on a footstool LOL. So after many years of sitting in front of my little record player, I guess she realized I wasn’t giving up anytime soon! She took me to see the Family Brown (a group from Ontario) performing at the Calgary Stampede. I was 18yrs old at the time, and she turned to look at me and said, “Did you know you can sing like that?” I was excited and scared, but together we found a way for me to audition for the Young Canadians of the Calgary Stampede. And I’m still singing and performing today. When life knocks you down, what lifts you up? When life knocks me down, my faith and my friends lift me up. But first I need to ask for help or a shoulder to cry on, and sometimes that can be tough. Aren’t we supposed to understand so much more about life at this point? Slowing down, walking in nature, taking a break to watch an inspiring movie or listen to one of my favorite speakers helps tremendously.

Just as I would do with a friend that needed my support, that’s where being gentle with myself comes in.
What would you like to share with younger women about “being beautiful”?
I remember how many times I was able to move through something challenging by sharing the problem with another. It eases, supports, nurtures and helps me grow through instead of just going through it.
I would share with younger women to realize how beautiful, unique and amazing you are. You only have one life and there’s only one YOU. SO surround yourself with those you admire and support you for exactly who you are, and share the similar interests, ethics and values with. Stand for what you believe in, or you’ll fall for anything.
Who most inspires you and why? There have been many who have inspired me. One who stands out prominently is Dr. Wayne Dyer who has brought profound perspectives that have shaped the last 20 years of my life. Through transformational wisdom, I learned much about forgiveness of myself and others. I didn’t even realize I was hanging onto ‘stuff’. The freedom has helped pave the way for more heart-centred relationships in my life and created the confidence to follow my dreams.
To thine own self be true. This too shall pass. Will it matter in 5 days, 5 months or 5 years? What is it in nature that feeds your soul? I jokingly share with close friends that I really think I was a tree in another life! I rejuvenate my soul and reconnect with the bond between all living things.

Guest gathered at Enoch Cree Nations for an evening of food and healing at the Redx Talks. Food was prepared by local chefs over open fires.
Voice, Healing and FOOD Recently, we attended an event that was hosted by Redx Talks founder, Cowboy Smith (yes, his real name), and event food curator chef Shane Chartrand. From the outset we could feel that this was going to be a very special assembling on Treaty 6 land at Enoch Cree Nation for voice and healing through talks and food. Under age-old trees our spirits quieted as Elder Irene Morin opened in prayer in her native tongue. This opening was followed by Cowboy, chef Chartrand, Chief Billy Morin, (the return of ) Elder Morin, and other speakers who shared engaging stories that were primarily focused on food. Elder
In particular I was rapt with attention when Elder Morin spoke and it wasn’t just because of her humor; her recounts of food experiences were almost unbelievable especially when she described the time she unknowingly ate gopher! I
almost felt like I was with her when she perfected a lump-free oatmeal recipe, determined to do so because of all those times she ate lumpy oatmeal at residential school. Today, it is one of her favorite breakfast recipes. Which leads me to ask, have you ever taken an unpleasant food memory and made it better, like she did? It is obvious that story is important to her as a path to knowledge and change. Clearly, her community values her wisdom as Elder. I was touched by her voice; she stirred me to be more active in resolution as well. Feast
After the speeches were completed we wound our way through birch tree-filled and sandy pathways to open fires and smoke-touched offerings. The power of speech continued while we feasted: every chef and cook expressed their voice and culture through food.

In all there were around 10 stations where we partook of their heritage with each mouthful; we accepted the food love that they gave us through exceptional presentation and outstanding taste. I felt happily and completely saturated in body, mind, and soul. Food Stories
This poignant event lined up with my ongoing mission to encourage people to recognize the healing power of food and the stories about them. We can receive enormous value from food and food stories using words, action, bits and bites if we allow it. When we give attention to what we know, hear, say, partake and consume, our food stories will restore and fill us and those around us too. Reconciliation
The greater message of this event was about reconciliation and how food naturally brings people together. Just like each used their voice through story and food we can do the same. Do you allow food to heal you and others? Can you connect with others over food and hear each voice and their story? I believe that together we can move forward to strengthen and heal our communities and our individual food stories if we care to listen.

Life is just a Phase by Laurel Vespi
Are You Talking to Me? Just in case you were wondering…. you are not the only person who is talking to yourself! There is a constant conversation going on in our heads. We all have an inner cheerleader and a skeptic and a disrupter, but unfortunately the loudest voice is often that of our inner critic. It’s sometimes hard to hear the other voices when the critic has the megaphone and rarely wants to hand it over. The truth is the one person we listen to for sure, is our self. That means it’s important to pay attention to which part of our selves gets the most air time. Chances are the critic has had free rein in your head for an awfully long time. Chances are the voice of your spirit has been muffled. The trick is learning to manage the messages coming from our inner critic so they don’t hold us back in ways we don’t need. Try picturing your inner critic as an imaginary person or character. That helps to make it easier when deciding how you want to handle it. Inner critics are skillful and wily but they can be managed effectively using some simple techniques: Catch the inner critic in the act.
Your inner critic speaks with a certain tone and vocabulary. It’s negative and harsh. It uses words like should, can’t, or demeaning adjectives. Recognize when that voice is speaking and name it: “That’s my inner critic talking.” Then you can decide what to do about it. Evaluate the inner critic’s message. Ask: Is this helpful to me right now? Just because you hear a message doesn’t mean you have to act on it. Consider whether this moves you forward or supports you. If not, then try one of the next two suggestions. Acknowledge and release the inner critic. Sometimes the inner critic actually has good, although misguided, intentions. It may be a voice that in the past served to protect you. Go ahead and acknowledge the message and let it go. Try something like this: “Thanks. I can handle it from here.” Reframe the inner critic’s message. Take the message and turn it into the opposite or use more empowering language. “I can’t” becomes “I can”.
16 • Be Fabulous! eMagazine I www.fabulousat50.com I July • 2017
“I should” becomes “I choose to”. “You are so stupid” becomes “you are infinitely wise”. Use the reframed message as an affirmation. Even when your inner critic maybe has a point, remember you would never speak to someone else in that way. You might have doubts, fears or concerns. Consider how you would express them to a loved one or friend. That’s the voice of your inner coach. Inner Critic
The wonderful thing is when you require your inner critic to be a little quieter, the conversation in your head shifts. You begin to hear some of those other voices that have had less air time, like that of your spirit. It might seem unfamiliar at first, but you’ll know it when you hear it. It always has your best interests at heart. It’s a voice of compassion, encouragement, courage and great wisdom.
We LOVE
Keep talking to yourself! Just manage the conversation by inviting more aspects of yourself to participate. LeARniNG tO PLaY WiTh mY VoiCe Almost my entire life, I wanted to sing. I would look at people with awe and envy as they sang, seemly with ease. I had not been blessed with this natural ability, and my tendency as a child, to be overly selfconscious, meant I was not willing to take a risk when it came to singing in public, although singing was my secret desire. I imagined that the sensation of belting out an incredible song would be akin to soaring in the sky’s like a bird. When my son, who is now 25, was finishing up a preschool music class, the instructor at the time was retiring from teaching young children so she could focus on her adult solo vocal lessons. I remember wanting to sign up with her, but didn’t because I had fear around it, and
was too busy caring for my children and all the other responsibilities in my life. I do however, recall the story she shared with us. One of her clients was a woman close to 70 years old, who came to her wanting to learn how to sing so she would not be embarrassed while at church during hymn time. At the time she could only hit a couple squeaky notes. Wonderfully, within a year of lessons, the lady was able to join her church choir. This instructor had a strong belief that everyone can sing. I held onto that glimmer of hope for two decades. Sound Therapy
Within the first year of establishing Fabulous@50 Calgary, I organized an introductory workshop on sound therapy.
18 • Be Fabulous! eMagazine I www.fabulousat50.com I July • 2017
My guests were Sharon Carnes of Sound Wellness (www.soundwellness.com), and Sandy D’Acey of Sounds Within (sandydacey@yahoo.com). These two women would be instrumental in my personal journey to find my voice. At the end of our fun, interactive, workshop, I put out an offer, to the group. I wanted to find a couple ladies who felt they could not sing, or had a fear of singing, to join me in a group singing lesson mini-series, which would be coached by Sandy D’Acey. Sandy is not only an effective sound therapist, but a very talented musician and holistic vocal coach. We choose to call the course PLaY WiTh YoUr VoiCe. Empowering
The next six weeks were incredibly empowering for all of us. Initially, I thought we were going to just learn how to sing, but we all soon discovered that we experienced so much more. I have always said that “ When we step through fear in one aspect of our life, it dissipates in others”. Each week someone would share that something amazing had happened to them the week prior. Often it had to do with using their voice to be speak up about something important, or having felt more confident when making a presentation. We each treasured our weekly meetings, as they became a wonderful opportunity to recharge and reconnect. We laughed; we sang; and we sometimes shed tears.... but mostly we had tremendous fun. We affectionately, nicknamed this vocal series “ Petrified to Party”, because at the end of the series we decided to throw a Fabulous@50 Christmas party, where we bravely stood up in front of our friends
and shared three Christmas songs, complete with some “snazzy choreographed moves” I had initially thought this would be a one off series, but this was not to be the case. We were having so much fun, playing with our voices, connecting with each other and learning to sing, that we chose to continue our singing lessons into the new year. Now, throughout the year we offer two PLaY WiTh YoUr VoiCe courses: introductory and the ongoing Level Up Group. Sometimes in life, we don’t realize how far we’ve come, until we look in our rearview mirror and take note. The other night while at a campfire sing-along, I caught myself singing along, carefree and having a blast. I could feel that I was carrying the tune better and I was singing in a more solid, supported way. Was I hitting every note perfectly? Hell no… But I WAS SINGING. I’ve come a long way form mouthing Happy Birthday at parties. My dream to sing, sat as a dried-up seed for decades waiting to germinate, now, it is a wonderful sapling, waiting to grow stronger with continued attention. Whatever dream you hold in your heart, no matter how old and withered you think it might be, there is a way to fulfill it. If your dream, involves learning to sing… I invite you to, PLaY WiTh YoUr VoiCe.
