Fabulous at 50 Lifestyle with Dianna Bowes
Eating healthy fats More fat...on my last session with Shonda Holt, Functional Nutrition Practitioner (Nourishing Yourself ) made the suggestion to add more healthy fats to my diet. After a lifetime of avoiding fat (bad fat) my head said “What...????” But my heart knew she was right. There is so much research now about the importance of healthy fats in a diet. Click here to find out more about healthy fats. Shonda recommended adding healthy fats to my smoothies in the morning. She recommended adding coconut and avocados too. Plus she suggested Fat Bombs. What is a Fat Bomb, you ask? Well it is a delicious way to add fat into your diet. I am down 8 lbs, it is a slow process, which would normally be frustrating. But I am not doing this as a short term program. I didn’t put this weight on overnight, so it will not go away overnight either. Plus I am working on digestion issues as well, which seem to have settled down, not
that I have removed things from my diet. So, you could be asking, is this a hard program to follow? I would answer yes and no. It is all about choices, how do I want to feel? I treat myself once in awhile, but when I have the treat, I usually feel crappy, so I am not as anxious to do it again. It is about getting real with yourself. Asking yourself the question, “if I keep doing what I am doing, will I get the same results”? When I go out, I check out the menu online before I go or I ask if we could go to a restaurant that may be a better choice. Sorry Italian restaurants...I am not eating pasta. Cauliflower is my new pasta, tastes so great with a homemade tomato sauce. Breakfast have definitely changed. No more eggs, toast and bacon. I eat before we go, then have a fruit cup when I get there and a cup of tea. I am there for the company, not the food. I hardly miss the traditional breakfast, mostly because my tummy feels bad after.

I do a fair amount of networking or social events, and find wine is usually involved. If I do choose to have a glass, I have one only, then switch to sparkling water. My body actually enjoys the sparkling water more most times. As long as a have a glass in your hand, I feel like I am participating and no one notices. The gift of lunch
There are a couple of things I am working at achieving. One is spending at least 15 minutes everyday meditating and eating lunch. Not eating a regular lunch has become a bad habit. But when I stop and give myself the gift of lunch, I feel like I am giving myself something special.
I know it may sound weird to you. But those that are work at home people, may understand. There are no people here saying “lunch time” . The day flies by and before I know it, it is dinner. The Ladybird’s Kitchen by Pam Robertson
Sponge Toffee Want a great treat this summer that brings back your childhood and gives you little sugar kick at the same time? I picked some of this up on a recent trip to Victoria and then started playing with it at home to change up flavours and the texture. I love to cook it until it is caramelized to a deep colour and right before it’s burned. If you play with it you’ll get it to the place where you like it best. Be careful as you work, since this is boiled sugar that is molten hot and sticky. Make sure you have a candy thermometer (if you don’t have one, check with a friend or neighbour – just be sure to share the results with them!), and a silicon pastry brush. Use a 13 x 9 inch (3.5 litre) metal cake pan. Line it with foil and grease lightly or spray with cooking spray. You can also line the pan with parchment but I find it tends to wiggle as your pour the mix in, and so I prefer the foil.
Ingredients: 1 1/2 cups (625 ml) granulated sugar 2/3 cup (150 ml) white corn syrup 1/3 (75 ml) cup water 4 tsp (18 ml) baking soda 2 tsp (10 ml) vanilla Method: In large 12-cup (3L) saucepan, stir together sugar, corn syrup, and water over medium heat just until sugar dissolves. Bring mix to a boil. Cook, without stirring but brushing down side of pan occasionally with pastry brush dipped in cold water, so all sugar granules melt, and until candy thermometer reaches hard-crack stage of 300F (149C). Remove from heat. Stand well back and keep your face away from the caramel as you whisk in the baking soda (mixture will bubble, sputter, and increase in volume rapidly).

Whisk in vanilla (or play with other flavourings like maple. The less you stir it, the better. You need to dissolve the baking soda and not whisk the bubbles out as you add your flavouring. Pour into prepared pan. Let cool in pan on rack without disturbing, about 2 hours. Break into 1 1/2 inch (4 cm) pieces. If you are making it ahead, store layered between waxed paper in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.

But your going to love the big pieces of sponge toffee as they melt in your tongue, and you can even sprinkle them on plain yogurt or oatmeal for a sweet treat. HEART STUFF Broken or Broken Open© Whenever I coach someone who is nervous about public speaking, one of the most important things I tell them (besides remembering to breathe) is to speak from the heart.
that love can make us feel invincible, yet the loss can bring us to our knees.
Why? Because when we speak from the heart, it taps into our emotions and helps us to connect to the feelings and emotions of others. Heart-to-heart contact is just a step away from soul-to-soul. And that’s where the magic happens!
Sometimes that vulnerable feeling causes us to guard our hearts to protect us from hurt. We say, “If I love fully and openly, I will be devastated if something happens to our relationship. So I will play it safe and not give all my heart.” That strategy might keep us safe, but in turn, does it prevent us from experiencing the full potency we deserve from loving deeply?
Our heart space is a place where we can feel very powerful and also extremely vulnerable. All our love resides there, and so do all our fears. For example, the power of the love I felt for my newborn son sat beside the fears that triggered at the thought of caring for a helpless infant 24/7. Would I be a good mom? What if something bad happened? A similar scenario is true when we fall in love with a potential partner. The might of

I have personally had my heart bruised a few times and broken at least twice. Those old song lyrics, “How can you mend a broken heart...”fit perfectly with my experience. In anguish and pain, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to open to love again. So my heart closed up like a flower in the dead of night.

Although we think about “mending” our broken hearts, patching them up as best we can, I wonder if we end up with a lurking fear that our hearts might not withstand the strain of a new, unbridled love. Instead of the band-aid mending, I believe that healing is a better approach. For me, part of the healing process involved being willing to look at other hurts and wounds, some of which had been around far longer than the lost relationships. Rather than berate myself with the “shuda, wuda, cuda” stuff, I wrapped myself in love and compassion. As I became better at self-nurturing, I could feel my inner strength grow much more than before.
My heart began to re-open to the possibilities of risking it for love. Like the Grinch whose heart had only been the size of a walnut, mine has grown to have much more capacity. Once again I feel ready to embrace new love – a love that would not be possible had my heart not broken, healed, and then broken open to new possibilities. ROBERTA SCOTT What are my top 3 talents: I would say I have been a very good care giver. In my job as a Paramedic taking care of people is something I really enjoy and am told I am very good at it - which is a huge compliment. I am a good organizer, I have been organizing events for years and have been very successful at it, whether it is for my
profession, charity, fundraising or just fun socials, I am good at bringing people together for a cause and creating a positive environment for all. I work well under pressure, am good at handling many things at once and being able to ‘multi-task’ and co ordinate a lot of different things at once, which is a great skill to have in my line of work!

My vision of great leadership: I think a great leader is a people person, a person who strong, positive and is able to unite people to be and do their best. I also think a great leader is motivational, inspiring and has positive ‘vision’. One thing that made a difference in my life: I would have to say my parents. They are both very caring and supportive people and so growing up having them behind me enabled me to be the person I am and today, and accomplish all I have so far in my life. I credit them with making that difference in my life 100%. When life knocks me down, what lifts me up: I always remind myself of how lucky I am, no matter what has happen to knock me down - bad things happen in life and sometimes we fail, but I accept that and look around at all the good things in life and in my own life, and I am usually able to eventually see the ‘silver lining’ to most bad situations along life’s journey. What would I share with younger women about ‘being beautiful’:

I know it sounds like a ‘cliche’ but your beauty is within, and your beauty is your unique self. Don’t get caught up in what the media is trying to sell you in terms of how you ‘should’ look - but celebrate your uniqueness. Love yourself, and if you love yourself, you will feel beautiful and that’s what really matters. What is in nature that feeds your soul: Everything - absolutely everything! I love nature! I look around at the world, at a lovely flower garden, all the amazing animals on this planet, the ocean, and tiniest of insects, and I marvel at it all - nature is so full of energy and inspiration!

How to anti-age your hair Hair is one of the things that can change as we get older, but those changes don’t have to be bad. As the Fabulous@50 community knows, getting older isn’t about sitting and letting things happen to you, it’s about going out there and doing what feels right. If you think your hair is a problem as you rise in age, it’s time to change things up and there are lots of ways to do so. I’ve seen some really inspiring fresh and beautiful hairstyles and in meeting inspiring older women have picked up great tricks on how us Boomers can anti-age our hair. Here are a few tips from what I’ve learnt: 1. Short hairstyles for older women
Just like doing your make-up, picking a hairstyle is about working with what you’ve got, not against it. That means if your hair is getting thin or ratty at the ends don’t just continue with a longer style because it’s what you’ve always done. Now is the time to try one of the numerous great looking short hairstyles for older women. Have a look out for celebrities with shorter hairstyles – think Helen Mirren with her chic bob or Judi Dench with her updated, mature pixiestyle look. Consider what would suit your face shape and if in doubt of which short hairstyles for older women will suit you best, try consulting with a hair stylist for some professional advice.

2. Hair care products as you get older There’s no point just using the products on your hair that you have always used if your hair type is actually changing too. There are fabulous products on the market that can really help to anti-age your hair. Do a bit of research and work out what would work best for your locks. Many older beauties find volumizing products helpful to avoid thinning and give that much needed hair-lift boost. Try volumizing shampoos and hairsprays. Other ladies find their hair also becomes dry. Why not use a regular hair mask to get rid of any nasty cracking ends? I apply thick and creamy concoctions to my hair at least once a week, leaving it for 5-10 minutes and really notice the gorgeous results! 3. Avoiding sun damage As we know when it comes to skin, sun damage can be bad!
Keeping on top of the potential problem by protecting your hair just as you do your face is vital in warding off cracking or dry hair in the golden years. I love a good 1950s style wide-rimmed beach hat for that glamorous seaside look. Not only does this make you feel rather elegant, it protects both hair and face from sun damage. Have a look too at the specialist shampoos and conditioners which leave a protective barrier on your hair. Using these when you know you’ll be out in the sun all day can have a really beneficial effect. By changing up your style every now and then, using some of the great products on the market and protecting yourself from the sun, your hair will age as gracefully as you do. living in a “me-first” world that pits one person against another?
It’s no wonder. With all of the violence, fear and hatred we see in the world, kindness and love can seem like a radical act.
We are immersed in an epidemic of distraction, where everyone is busy and focused on the next thing that needs to be done. It’s hard to pay attention to what’s happening around us when we have our heads down focused on our to-do list. Add in social media where comparing and judging are all part of the game – where it’s easy to forget that an actual human being is on the other side of our post or tweet. And we also seem to have forgotten how to have purposeful and respectful conversations with others. Not such a great skill to lose in a time when our opinions and ideologies can be quite diverse.
Compassion is the heartfelt concern we have for another person’s well-being. It’s recognizing the suffering of others and wanting in some way to help ease their pain. It’s not just a nice concept. There is a biological component to compassion. Contrary to what many people believe, humans are inherently caring with a desire to be connected to others. In times of real crisis we see that compassion rise up and we take action. But in our regular daily existence we often default to our less kind and gentle selves. So if we are biologically wired to have care and concern for others, how did we get to this place where it seems that we are
I am a big believer in one person making a difference through conscious thoughts and actions. There are some simple, but powerful ways you can help shift the world back to a kinder, more caring place.

First remember that compassion does not discriminate. You have to have selfcompassion in order to be compassionate with others. Start by being kinder to yourself. Notice the conversation in your head and give your inner critic less time and attention. The truth is we are all works in progress. Practice forgiveness for not getting it right all the time. Embrace the mess. Learn from your mistakes and do better next time. Then turn your attention toward others. Instead of looking at what separates you from them – choices, ideas, opinions – look instead for those things you have in common. We all have a desire to be loved, to be safe, to be well. Remind yourself of this by saying. “This person is just like me.”

The heart of the matter is this: The only way we will survive this great adventure called life is if we begin to put humanity back into human being. No problem has ever been solved, in our personal lives or the world, through judgment, anger, or fear. Choose love instead. Begin with yourself and then see yourself in others. Signs of a Stroke The brain is the control centre of your body. It controls how you think, feel, communicate and move. Knowing how your brain works can help you understand your stroke. Brain cells
The brain is full of specialized cells called neurons. These neurons make the brain work. To work properly — and even to survive — they need to be fed by a constant supply of blood. To survive vessels need to be fed by a constant supply of blood. Blood vessels of the brain
Arteries and veins are types of blood vessels in your body. Arteries carry blood, rich in oxygen and nutrients, to your organs. Veins carry waste products away from your organs. Cerebral arteries are the arteries of the brain. Normal brain function needs a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients. When a stroke happens, the blood flow is disrupted. Some brain cells do not get the oxygen and nutrients they need. When the cells die, that area of the brain cannot function as it did before.

The brain is divided into two parts called hemispheres, the right and the left. The right hemisphere of your brain controls the left side of your body. Pamela: Exercise and make absolutely everything from scratch. It’s the only way I know what goes into everything I eat. Sunscreen everyday, wine in moderation, family and friends.
