Good Neighbours Being a good neighbour has always been important to me. When we lived in St. Albert it was very easy to meet the neighbours through our children. We were outside more and had lots in common. I planned block parties and we were all there in support of each other. We made so many friends and our children felt secure. They ran around the block, from house to house, in their little rubber boots, laughing and having the time of their lives. And yes, there were times that trouble arose, kids fighting and some neighbours not appreciating others. But overall, the experience of a tight neighbourhood was something I treasured. But some people want to keep to themselves and I respect that. I have always been the one to cross the street or to offer a hand to a neighbour. A few years ago we decided to have a garage sale, which of course gave us a great excuse to meet our neighbours in our central Edmonton neighbourhood.
It was great to meet so many nice people, some we still talk to and have been supportive of each other. Then there is the other’s who use a garage sale or other event to invade your space and push the boundaries. It got to the point, my husband had to ask them not to come back. They bought our garage sale items, brought them back, and then threatened us with fake letters from lawyers. Thankfully the craziness didn’t last long. Now that we don’t have small children, it is harder to meet our neighbours. The people to one side of us, have lived in this neighbourhood their whole lives and are now moving to warmer climate. I do wish we had got to know them better. I am going to make a delicious banana bread and welcome the new people moving in. I sure hope they like cats, music and BBQ’s.

our story Mission: To INSPIRE, EDUCATE and EMPOWER the baby boomer woman! Be Fabulous! was designed specifically to be an event magazine to be presented to our guests at the Annual Fabulous@50 Experience and Martini Party. But something magical happened! Dianna Bowes took a look around and realized there was nothing in our community that was discussing the needs of the seasoned woman. Be Fabulous!, much like the Fabulous@50 tradeshows, seminars, the meetup group and the Fabulous@50 on-line membership, filled a gap. Since 2010, Be Fabulous! has spotlighted inspirational women on it’s cover and covered topics that mid-age women want to read about. The vision of creative director, Dianna Bowes, was to publish a magazine that would be written by baby boomer women for baby boomer women. The Ladybird’s Kitchen by Pam Robertson
Watercress Salad I’m ready to shift away from hearty winter soups, stews, and goulash and head for the garden now that Spring weather is really here. I don’t mean fake spring like the one that teases us around the calendar Spring on March 20, when we start thinking about shorts and sandals. I mean real Spring, when the onslaught of snow and cold are done, and little shoots of green things are poking their way out of the dirt. This recipe calls for watercress, which is a peppery, crunchy green that is usually easy to find this time of year. You’ll see it in a plastic bag or cello container in the grocery store, or in a nice sized bunch at the farmer’s market. If you can’t find any, don’t panic. This is a very flexible salad, so
go ahead and change out the fruit, nuts, cheese, and greens however you like. If you like blue cheese, it’s delicious in this salad! This recipe will make enough for you and a friend. Ingredients for the salad 2 medium sized eating apples or pears – peeled, cored, and quartered 2 tsp lemon juice 2 Tbsp butter 1/3 Cup brown sugar 1/2 Cup feta cheese 3 Tbsp walnut pieces, toasted lightly in a skillet until golden 4 Cups fresh watercress, trim thick stems off
6 • Be Fabulous! eMagazine I www.fabulousat50.com I April• 2018
Dressing ingredients 3 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil 2 Tbsp balsamic vinegar (white balsamic is a nice treat to use here) 1 Tbsp Dijon mustard 1/2 tsp granulated sugar or 1 tsp maple syrup 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 tsp pepper Peel and quarter apples (or pears) and add lemon juice to slow browning (also adds flavour to your dish, so don’t skip the lemon juice). Use a medium to large non-stick skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add apples and brown sugar. Stir gently and frequently until fruit is getting tender but not cooked right through. Increase heat to bring to the boil, and allow to bubble for about 2-3 minutes until the sugar is caramelised. Put aside to cool slightly.
Rinse your watercress and then pat dry with some paper towel, before arranging it on two large plates. Place the apple pieces artistically on the watercress. Crumble the feta over the greens and fruit. Add the toasted walnuts. In a small bowl, mix all the ingredients for the dressing (omit the salt if your feta is salty). Drizzle dressing generously over the salad. Serve with crusty bread. Food Stories with Loretta Friedrich
Food Tastes Better with Great People!
Isn’t it funny how when we’re with great people, the food always seems to taste better? I think that it really doesn’t matter what food is being served since this time is so nourishing on its own. But add delicious food and well, you have memorable food and life moments in the making. My go to “delicious food” is salad. When I’m asked to bring a dish to a friend’s house, a neighbourhood block party, or when family and friends come over, I prepare a salad that honours local and seasonal availability of food. I could make something like a Zucchini Tomato Bean Salad in the summer, a Warm Potato Salad in the fall, or a Greek Chicken Quinoa Salad in the winter. What about for spring, the beginning of fresh and new life? It’s the time of year to use baby greens and delicate sprouts
as stars of a salad! The tender leaves and shoots are ideally consumed within days of purchasing to reap their nutrient-dense benefits. One of my favourite spring salads that I’ve made for a number or years now, is the Radish Love Salad with Tomato Vinaigrette. This salad is so versatile, easy-to-make, and visually appealing. Use whatever greens, sprouts, microgreens or shoots are available and toss at the last minute to avoid sogginess. If you’d rather, plate it like I did in the picture and add the vinaigrette just before serving. I also serve the thick vinaigrette on its own as a dip that is relished by a few of my wonderful peeps. No matter what you serve this spring (or any season) include great people. And then, don’t be surprised if your food tastes better!

Fabulous@50 Featured Member Teresa with her husband and girls.
Teresa Trottman What are you looking forward to doing/creating in this next half of your life? I have joined all these wonderful meet up/woman’s groups that have really helped to save my life. They allow me down time from my very busy work and home life. The best part of the meet up groups is no one knows what is going on in your life good or bad so you can just enjoy a day without having to talk about what is happening in your life. Most of the people I meet at these events whether it be hiking, snowshoeing, going to movies, weekend adventures away or women talk events are retired and enjoying their “next half of life”. My next half will see me being very involved in volunteering for many different charities and taking care of my health and wellness. Getting fit again and taking care of ME and having
Winner of the 2018 Fabulous@50 Calgary Inside- Out Makeover time for others. If you were to share one thing that made a difference in your life, what would it be? Being a nurse for 36 years has taught me so much. Not only all the longtime friendships I have developed and the lives that I have affected, it has made me into a much better person. Seeing all of us closer to retirement not only shocks me because I have to say “how did this happen so fast and where did the time go”. Time goes by so fast in life. In my early 30’s I went back packing for a year at a time ,twice. It was life changing and I met life long friends. I know in my heart that I will travel again and maybe meet up with olds freinds but definitely make new ones in the places that are on my bucket list.

When life knocks you down, what lifts you up? My self care, when life hands you lemons is to treat myself to yoga classes, long walks in nature, cuddling with my dogs, fostering dogs and finding them new homes and going to our cabin in the woods to get away from it all. Trying to stay positive and not all stressed out in our busy world now does take some work. Daily meditations and positive thinking even when you could be thinking negatively is what I strive for. Old friends are the best. How do you celebrate when you achieve a goal or a milestone? I am usually the party planner so I even plan celebrations for myself. When I celebrated my 25th anniversary with Alberta Health Services I threw my own party in the back yard. I did not tell anyone that was invited what it was for but did ask them to bring 25 of something. I received 25 paper clips, 25 Qtips, 25 suckers, 25 Mike’s hard lemonades and many more. Now I am coming up to my 35 so may have to do the same. I love to plan events to celebrate others accomplishments. Always fun to get people together. What would you like to share with younger women about “being beautiful”? As I mentioned life does go by very fast. My mom always said “enjoy life every day because it all goes by so fast”. When I entered the Fabulous 50 makeover contest I truly was having a hard time feeling good about myself. I do know that I am a beautiful person but some of the shine had disappeared. My self confidence was wavering and I looked in the mirror and said “who are you and were did she go”. Going through the full makeover with all the very generous people involved made me realize I could like “my old self again”. They were all so wonderful, kind, giving and taught me so much. I would like to tell the younger women to not be so hard
on yourself, do self care, take compliments with a smile and take care of your inside (soul), outside by treating yourself to spa days, and always look in the mirror and say “you are so beautiful”. I took for granted my husband saying most mornings as I kissed him good bye on the way to work and he would say “honey you look beautiful”. I won’t anymore. No matter your size, your fashion, your new wrinkles , your hair color changing, your body changing and your mental thoughts changing you will always be the same person you were when you were younger . You just need to keep telling yourself “ you are beautiful inside and out”. What is it in nature that feeds your soul? Sunrises, sunsets, our big blue skies no matter what the temperature is, waterfalls, picnics, the mountains, walking my dogs, and enjoying my firepit at the cabin looking at the mountains. What makes you laugh? My husband, all the dogs that come through my home, girlfriends enjoying some wine time, traffic jams when I know no one can get a hold of me so I can blast the radio and just sing along , planning my bucket list and just knowing that life is good.

Life is just a Phase by Laurel Vespi
HI NEIGHBOUR!
There’s an old saying that fences make good neighbours. That’s true…except when it’s not. A fence is simply a boundary and in our modern world they can take many forms. You can build a fence out of just about anything. Some are functional but still attractive. Some have barbed wire and shout “Keep Out!” And some are actually invisible. Privacy
The simplest fence is a physical one between us and our neighbours that serves to delineate property lines and keep our pets in their own space. They afford us some privacy by allowing us to be in control of our exposure. Imagine if your back yard did not have a fence. Sitting on your deck might seem a bit like being a zoo animal for everyone one to see. In life, we typically don’t put all of ourselves on display. There are parts of we prefer to keep private or share with a small group of people. That’s true whether we are talking about a BBQ or our deepest secrets.
There are also invisible fences that we create. Those personal boundaries protect our space without being overly nasty. When we regularly maintain our boundaries we are more able to politely discourage others from overstepping them. It’s when we are afraid or vulnerable, or have let others push us around for too long, that we are more likely to throw up a brick wall. Boundaries make good fences with not only our neighbours, but also our family, friends and co-workers. But the busyness of life has created a different kind of invisible fence that makes us more isolated from our neighbours. Back in the day everyone knew all their neighbours by name. You didn’t have to throw a block party to meet the people on your block because you already knew them. You popped next door to borrow a cup of sugar and got caught up on the latest news. Kids were allowed to roam free because we knew and trusted our neighbours.
14 • Be Fabulous! eMagazine I www.fabulousat50.com I April• 2018
Now schedules are full to overflowing leaving little time to chat in the front yard or over the back fence. Children are kept under close watch and people socialize online rather than in person. The best we can manage is a quick wave to the lady down the block as we drive past on our way to our next commitment. It’s no wonder that people report feeling disconnected. Mother Teresa said that we cannot love God without loving our neighbor. Feel free to substitute “life”, “the universe” or any other meaningful word for “God”. Start by getting to know your neighbours – make time to chat, offer a helping hand, borrow a cup of sugar. Remember fences are good things but not necessarily. Building Neighbourhood
Connections My young son and I happen to live in a small neighbourhood right in the heart of busy and congested downtown Toronto, the biggest city in Canada. So you might think my neighbourhood would be impersonal, unfriendly and hard to make connections in, but if you did, you would be very wrong. My little neighbourhood is called Seaton Village, and it is filled with many small and large parks, surrounding old and mostly renovated Victorian houses that are well over 100 years old. I bought my lovely and cozy house in 2005, about 3 years before I had my now almost 10 year old son Jesse. At first I did not meet many of my neighbours, although both neighbours on either side of me quickly introduced themselves to me and were so welcoming and friendly, which was a wonderful start! But what I started to notice soon after I settled there
in Seaton Village, is that it really was a little ‘village’, full of very friendly and warm people - much to my surprise and delight. What makes this little ‘village’, right in the heart of downtown Toronto, so wonderful and friendly? It’s the efforts the home owners and residents go to bring our little community together, and it makes all the difference. For instances, there are numerous ‘street party’s’ or ‘block party’s’ in the spring and summer, put on by the residents of a certain street. I can count about 10 of them that I know of between May and July, all within a 10 minute walking distance, and I often attend them with my son and other neighborhood friends. Some have been going on as long as 30 years, all organized by the residents. They get a permit to block off the street to traffic for the day, everyone gathers on the street, they have games for the kids,
16 • Be Fabulous! eMagazine I www.fabulousat50.com I April• 2018
bouncy castles, bake sales, and then have a community pot luck dinner together right on the street. After dinner and/ or during the day they often have local bands playing, sometimes the musicians are neighbourhood kids, and it is all so fun! Plus it is a great way to meet your neighbours, and start building those relationships and friendships that make a regular neighbourhood become something really special. I have met so many local people this way over my 13 years living there. I actually feel like my quaint downtown neighbourhood is like living in a small town, we all know each other, say hi when we pass and have frequent neigbourhood get togethers (I often host) to welcome new neighbours to the street and say farewell to ones who are moving. We also host something called a pot luck ‘Progressive Dinner’ a few times a year over the winter, when people don’t see as much of each other and want enjoy a local ‘night out’ with new friends. We ask for 3 different neighbours to host either appetizers, main course or dessert, and we all bring a dish - this way you get to know and socialize with people in your neighborhood, and its always fun to get the opportunity to see the inside of other peoples homes. We also have many community events like ‘Porch View Dances’ and ‘Open Tuning’ a yearly Music Festival - again organized by the neighbours - where local musicians set up in alley ways, on porches, in parks etc and play for the community. It all culminates in a big outdoor concert in one of our local parks, and you often see a crowd of hundreds show up. We also have residents who put on mini fireworks show on their front lawn for Victoria day and invite the neighbors. Plus every year, the night after Hallow-
een - Nov 1st - we hold a Seaton Village ‘Pumpkin Walk’ through the park, where everyone brings their candle lit pumpkins to join in a lovely display for all to see what a show!! All these are things that any neighbourhood can do to bring people together and create a real sense of community - so if you don’t have these things in your neighbourhood, why not consider starting them? Because once you develop that real sense of community with your neighbours, you realize how nice it is to have it. It makes us feel like we belong, it creates new friends, bonds and supports - which is what being a ‘good neighbour’ is all about! Tea with Sue Paulson
Neighbors in BLOOM© My African violets are a constant reminder of one wonderful neighbor who lived next door to us in Calgary. Newly married, my husband and I had bought a partly finished house with the daunting goal of finishing the inside ourselves. Next door was a tiny, old house with a big garden that was owned by Ollie, a lady in her 80s. She soon invited me for tea. A profusion of flowering plants greeted me as she served tea in lovely china cups and offered me home-baked cookies. In awe of the multitude and variety of African violets that surrounded me, I asked Ollie about them. She was a proud member of the African Violet Society and had won many awards for her violets. I exclaimed in delight at the sight of all the pretty blooms. Some had been grown from seed and others from just a tiny slip placed in soil.
At that time in my life, I had no indoor plants. I was always bemoaning the fact that I had a purple thumb, stating that even my plastic plants died! Imagine my dismay then, to open my front door and discover two African Violets placed on my porch by Ollie. Contrary to my belief that African Violets were hard to grow, Ollie assured me there would be no problems. At the time, I didn’t believe her. Praying that they wouldn’t die and thus cause me to disappoint my neighbor, I placed my new plants in a west-facing window. Much to my delight, they flourished and bloomed, just as Ollie’s and my friendship did. The property on the other side of Ollie was another little, old house that belonged to an elderly man whose name I have forgotten. The two of them had been neighbors for many years.
18 • Be Fabulous! eMagazine I www.fabulousat50.com I April• 2018
Each of their spouses had passed away, so they devoted themselves to their gardens and to each other’s well-being. It was heartwarming to watch and I lent a hand whenever I could. While our stay in that house wasn’t long, that connection to my neighbors underscored the important of developing those relationships wherever I lived. When I was single again, I made a point of getting to know the neighbors on my floor of the apartment building. I could see the hesitation in new neighbors’ eyes as I introduced myself. It was obvious they were not accustomed to finding out who lived next door. But let’s face it. Living in isolation is really hard, especially if our families don’t live
close. It is our neighbors who can help us get connected with new surroundings. Building those connections has paid off in ways I could not have imagined. Over time, many of my neighbors helped me, and I, in turn was able to help them. Some neighbors became good friends. And though it’s been 36 years since Ollie and I first met, she is still with me – one of her violets still graces my plant shelf, purple flowers beaming happily!
