Keeping it Simple...

I have been following the Minimalists blog over the last few months. Joshua Fields Millburn & Ryan Nicodemus are two young men who are teaching people how to live meaningful lives with less. I find this really interesting, as I dislike clutter and have never been somone who needed the fanciest house or car. I am also someone who always has lots going on. Projects of all types, that unfortunately create clutter. This month’s issue is all about clutter, not just the physical clutter, but the mental as well. When a senior goes into a senior facility, they are forced to declutter and keep things very simple. Joshua and Ryan are just doing it before they become seniors. Even Success Magazine is writing about simplifying your life, downsizing homes, getting rid of the excess that we just don’t need. We spend our entire lives working and purchasing and then when we get older we can’t even give our stuff away. Our kids aren’t interested in the collections of spoons or collections we thought

they would like. My mother-in-law gave me great advice, to never collect things. I listened. I have some beautiful art and a few pieces of nice jewellery that hopefully my children will want and doesn’t end up in a garage sale. The jeweller who designed my wedding band, said that jewellery was one of the best investments. It has value and takes up very little room to store. But in general I feel that the quest for more has put so much pressure on people. People are stressed out, overworking and not looking after their needs. Joshua and Ryan say minimalists don’t focus on having less, rather, they focus on making room for more: more time, more passion, more experiences, more contribution, more contentment. Well I am in for all of that. More is not better, unless it is love or kindness. Dianna Bowes is the creative director of Fabulous@50 and editor of Be Fabulous! CLICK HERE to read more blogs.

Mission: To INSPIRE, EDUCATE and EMPOWER the baby boomer woman! Be Fabulous! was designed specifically to be an event magazine to be presented to our guests at the Annual Fabulous@50 Experience and Martini Party. But something magical happened! Dianna Bowes took a look around and realized there was nothing in our community that was discussing the needs of the seasoned woman. Be Fabulous!, much like the Fabulous@50 tradeshows, seminars, the meetup group and the Fabulous@50 on-line membership, filled a gap. Since 2010, Be Fabulous! has spotlighted inspirational women on it’s cover and covered topics that mid-age women want to read about. The vision of creative director, Dianna Bowes, was to publish a magazine that would be written by baby boomer women for baby boomer women. Fabulous@50 and Be Fabulous! is more than a magazine, more than a tradeshow, more than a membership, it is a community! Find out more by going to our website. www.fabulousat50.com

The Ladybird’s Kitchen by Pam Robertson

I Know I Had It Somewhere... This month’s theme is all about getting organized, and since I usually write about food, I thought it was a good time to share what I did to get my recipe collection under control. I used to have three large bookshelves for recipe books and food magazines. Finding the recipes I wanted was a pain, especially if I was in a hurry. Besides, I usually only use two or three recipes out of each book even though I read them from cover to cover. To get a handle on the mess, I cut out pages for recipes I knew I would use again (sorry Mom!), and put them all into a binder. Over time, I created a document on my computer and saved it as Pam’s Recipe Treasury. Each entry includes the author of the original recipe and the book or website where I found it. For recipes that came to me on a recipe card, I have that scanned and included as an image, so that I always have the person’s hand-

writing (I’m a bit sentimental). Having the recipes stored on my computer means that I can easily keep track of changes I make, and keep notes on them, just like I used to in the books, and I can also add pictures. I also like that I can easily email a recipe to framily (friends and family) when they ask for something. This month’s recipe is an indulgent sweet treat. They are handy to pop into a lunch, or to have instead of cookies when you want a quick snack. This is one of those recipes that stands the test of time, and has been enjoyed Puffed Wheat Squares Prepare a 9 x 12 pan with non-stick spray Ingredients: 1/3 Cup butter or margarine ½ Cup corn syrup 1 Cup brown sugar 3 Tbsp cocoa

6 • Be Fabulous! eMagazine I www.fabulousat50.com I March• 2018

1 tsp vanilla 7 Cups puffed wheat (look for it in the baking aisle – it may not be in the cereal aisle) In a large pot, melt butter, and add syrup, sugar, cocoa and vanilla. When syrup bubbles (don’t let it go too long or your squares will be rock hard), remove from heat and add puffed wheat. Put in the prepared pan and press with a buttered spoon or spatula to make it even. Allow to cool completely (if you can stand to wait that long), cut into squares and serve. Store wrapped tightly or in a plastic tub for up to a week. Food Stories with Loretta Friedrich

ROOTED

in Goodness

I can’t remember a time without root vegetables, particularly potatoes, carrots, and beets, in storage awaiting their usage. Potato pancakes or baked, scalloped, and mashed potatoes are fond food memories along with carrots, together or separately, to enjoy in soups, stews, or baked goods. I have eaten carrots pickled, broiled, roasted, pureed, steamed, and raw for all of its crunchy goodness! Another vegetable that is typically on hand are red beets. As a child I remember enjoying many bowls of red beet borscht, typical food consumed by my Ukrainian heritage family. I continue this food tradition particularly when the beets, carrots, potatoes and other garden produce are fresh. Since I almost always have these vegeta-

bles on hand no matter what time of year it is, I like to play to create new versions of some of my favorite recipes. While experimenting, I came up with this delicious dish that showcases my love of potatoes, carrots, red beets (and more) in a chowder. While it seems like a humble meal, to me, the combination of the flavours is like a party in my mouth! The sweetness of the carrots and beets prop up the taste; the addition of Guinness cheddar cheese offers a wee bit of Irish influence... good timing with St. Patrick’s Day just around the corner. During springtime and into summer, I like to lighten up our meals with more raw and fresh-taking foods to salute the warmer seasons; however, here in Canada

a hearty bowl of chowder is still welcome to warm the body on the lingering cooler days. Next month my column will feature a spring food story and recipe but for now, come rejoice with me with down to earth (literally) good food, and bring your family! It’s meal time. What’s your food story? Loretta’s Chowder • 1 to 2 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil • 1 onion, chopped • 2 large celery stalks, sliced • 3 small beets, cubed • 3 to 4 carrots, sliced • 1 lb ground beef • 6 cups vegetable broth • 1 cup chopped potatoes • Guinness cheddar cheese (or your favourite sharp cheese), slices • Himalayan or sea salt, to taste In a Dutch oven, drizzle oil to cover the

bottom and heat slightly on medium heat. Add the onions and cook until transparent. Add the celery, carrots, and beets, and continue stirring until the vegetables are slightly cooked, about 3 to 5 minutes. Add ground beef, breaking up the chunks, and cook for about 5 minutes. Stir in the broth, and cook for another 10 minutes. Add potatoes and continue to cook for 30 minutes (do not overcook potatoes). Season with Himalayan or sea salt. To serve, ladle hot into bowls and top with slices of cheese. Serves 4. Enjoy! Note: for the best taste, use local market or garden vegetables and ground beef. I can promise you, the taste will be exceptional if you do so! Fabulous@50 Featured Member Karen ziplining in Maui.

Karen Murdock Helping people organize for a happier life What are you looking forward to doing /creating in the next half of your life? I never dreamed I would start my own business in my 50s. My original vision started as simply helping people to organize their homes. It has quickly morphed into so very much more than even I expected over the last four years. Because of this, it is a little hard to have a clear vision for the next half of my life. I do know it will certainly include helping baby boomers, seniors, and their families in multiple ways. Not just organizing their homes but their lives. I would love to see the alliance I founded, the Seniors Solution Team, expand to every area of need so our aging population can continue to live life on their terms. How has hardship or tragedy created who you are? My life was shaped by an accident that

happened when I was only two months old. My dad, a junior conductor at the time, lost both legs in a train accident. While too young to remember the event, I heard the stories of how our community, family and friends helped us during that time. After our family was back on its feet it was our turn to assist others who needed a hand up. We delivered food baskets, volunteered in our community, and did random acts of kindness to name a few. I remember my dad would sit with recent amputees to lift their spirits and help them gain perspective on their futures. I like to think that every job I do, every person I coach, every event I attend is prefaced with how I can help, what can I do for you? What would I consider my top three talents or skills? I believe that my values gained through

10 • Be Fabulous! eMagazine I www.fabulousat50.com I March• 2018

life experience are my top skills. Patience, empathy, and compassion. These values have enabled me to develop my emotional intelligence skills to allow me to help others in their struggles. I have been through a lot of transitions in my life. Divorce, blended family, elder care, death, multiple moves, and career changes to name some of the big ones. Life has not always been easy or calm, but I was able to pick myself up and move forward and I believe the best is yet to come. What is your vision of great leadership? My vision of great leadership is someone who leads by example and in doing so empowers others in their journey. A great leader gives options and allows for originality and acknowledges that there is more than one way to achieve a goal. We all have the ability to shine sometimes we just need someone to walk along side us and help blow the dust off, so we can

sparkle again. What would I share with younger women about being beautiful? When you have confidence, self-awareness, and self-acceptance you glow from the inside. Who you are and what you do is what makes you beautiful. Have you ever seen the movie “Shallow Hal”? It’s about a man who falls in love with a woman’s inner beauty and while a comedy the message goes beyond that and is great. As characters are portrayed at different times by the inner or outer beauty and not their physical attributes. What make you laugh? I have a spirit that laughs easily. I enjoy a good wit and laughing until I snort. My favorite laughs are those I share with my hubby. Our shared sense of humour and ability to make each other laugh is one of the cornerstones of our marriage.

Life is just a Phase by Laurel Vespi

WHY GARAGE SALES ARE A BAD IDEA A little nice weather and you see them popping up all over the place. No not spring flowers but garage sale signs. When people think about decluttering, they often start planning a garage sale as a way to get rid of some of their stuff. Here’s the truth: Garage sales are a bad idea. Some of you who are garage sale junkies might be having a “WHAT?!” reaction to that statement but there is some pretty good evidence that they are simply not a good idea. Here are some of the best reasons to skip the garage sale: #1 The garage sale mindset works against decluttering. When you declutter with a garage sale in mind, you stop asking yourself the best questions about what to do with your stuff and start thinking, “I could sell that.” If you weren’t having a garage sale, you would make different decisions about what to keep and where you could, or should, send stuff. Then after the garage

sale, you are left with a pile of unsold things that you still need to deal with. By that time most people are tired and the stuff goes back into the basement. If you are going to declutter, skip the garage sale and do something more efficient with your stuff. #2 Garage sales are not a good return on your investment. People often think that a garage sale is a good way to make some money. Not really. Most garage sales generate less than $50. On top of that consider the amount of time that it takes to get ready for a garage sale, time on the sale day and then clean up. Most people have to actually clean out their garage before they can have a sale. Unless you make a pile of money at the sale, which you probably won’t, your hourly return on your time is minimal. Add to that any advertising you might do and your return on your investment of time, energy and money is quite frankly not worth your time.

14 • Be Fabulous! eMagazine I www.fabulousat50.com I March• 2018

#3 Garages sales are full of over-priced stuff. Everybody having a garage sale thinks their stuff is far more valuable than it actually is. That’s why nothing really sells. People come and look at things and think, “I’m not paying that much for that.” Which brings me back to reason #2. #4 Garage sales create more stuff you really don’t need. It’s tempting when you see a garage sale to stop and take a look. What ends up happening is impulse buying. You purchase something you really don’t need that will probably end up in your own sale some time down the road. Only go to garage sales if you are looking for a specific item and don’t get distracted by other shiny objects. If you really want a garage sale, here’s a radical concept. Price everything for free. You still will have the same time and energy investment in getting ready for it, but you are more likely to get rid of a lot more stuff and isn’t that really the whole point? Karen with a client discussing heritage photo organizing.

S.P.A.C.E. I have noticed that Spring Cleaning has changed over the years. Improvements in central heating have made it less about a big clean and more about rethinking how we use our spaces. It is becoming more and more the time of year when people look at decluttering their spaces and reorganizing what they keep. Most of us discover that we have accumulated a lot of things over the past year, or perhaps longer, and we may not have discarded as many things along the way. To keep our home being our personal sanctuary we need to bring our home back into a balance that works for us. One of the benefits of being self-aware and self-accepting is making better decisions when we are decluttering and

setting up systems that work for us. I recommend that you designate one area to begin your decluttering and have a plan in place before you start that outlines your vision for that area. The area may be an entire room, or it may be a specific area in a room. It is much easier to make decisions when you have declared what this space should have as a certain feel and function. This will lead to a more efficient space as well. SPACE

I learned the acronym S.P.A.C.E. years ago and I believe it is still the best method for approaching decluttering and reorganizing. Julie Morgenstern wrote about this process in her book “Organizing from the Inside Out” in 1998.

S – Sort – Sort your belongings by category. When we collect all similar possessions together it is much easier to decide on what to keep, donate, or sell. Go room to room until you are sure you have everything in that category.

P – Purge - You may even discover duplicates or triplicates of your items. Have

you ever purchased a book twice? Don’t hesitate to purge items you don’t use or don’t need.

A – Assign – Having a home for something to live is all about “Closing the

Loop”. Keep in mind the most functional place for an item to live when assigning it a home.

C – Containerize – Having limits to an assigned home helps prevent overflow and accumulation of items.

E - Equalize – Have a plan to return all items to their home. I like to add that

you will feel your energy return to you in your clutter free home. I always remind friends, family and clients “You need to let go of the past to make room for your future.” Karen Murdock is a Organizing Expert with Your Organized Friend. Visit her website /www.yourorganizedfriend.ca

A beautiful calm, clean hotel room in Palm Springs to rest and rejuvenate.

Creating Calm Amidst a Cluttered Life© There are days when I feel shipwrecked amidst a sea of papers, cornered by electronic gadgets and their charging devices, and spun out with all the memories and thoughts that crowd my mind and vie for attention. Oh - to live a calm, clean, and clutter-free existence! The image of a monk with one robe and one bowl springs to mind. What would it be like to only have two things to look after? The only time I’ve even come close to that is when I travel. I carry as few worldly possessions as possible – though I admit I won’t ever experience Europe with just a toothbrush and an extra pair of jeans. The freedom that comes from living in a space where nothing belongs to me and is not my responsibility has me sighing

with relief. My time can be spent just on me and my pleasure! Unlike my homebody self, I’m a tidy traveler by nature. If there are drawers in my room, I empty my suitcase and organize what I’ve brought. I keep my things picked up and put away, so the maid’s cleaning job is easier. I don’t “make” the bed, but I do pull up the covers and put the extra pillows back. I know I’m pretty successful keeping a small amount of stuff organized. Where I have failed, sometimes miserably, is with an abundance of possessions. As a teenager, my closet of choice was actually my bedroom floor. The only time my clothes were properly stored was after my mother visited my room and said my father would soon be up to inspect. Now that propelled me to act!

18 • Be Fabulous! eMagazine I www.fabulousat50.com I March• 2018

My tolerance for mess in those days was huge. As long as there was one square foot of clean space to complete a task, I ignored the chaos around me. Although dirt and germs bothered me enough to deal with them, clutter and mess had to get really bad – or company was on its way – before I cleaned up. Has anyone else ever filled their oven with dirty dishes because unexpected company was arriving in the next five minutes? How relieved I am to report that those days are mostly over, thanks to a change of mind and the help of others way more organized than I. The litany of “if you’re keeping it, then you need a way to store it” stuck with me. Then the minimalists (who said, “If it doesn’t add value to your life, get rid of it”) activated me to purge and pitch. I use the word “activated” here, because I know now that if I had waited until I were “motivated”, nothing would

have changed! Of course, it doesn’t help that today; we’re constantly enticed by cool gadgets. Fortunately, I now value empty spaces more than something to fill them. I experience a quiet sense of pride each time I gather up my clutter and return my space to its orderly and pretty state. Best of all, I’ve come to a peace about my clutter-bug nature. Although “tidy” and “organized” are not my middle names, I can, I will, and I do what’s necessary to reduce the clutter, clean up my chaos, and clear my mind to a state of calm! FAB Books! Minimalism Live a meaningful life by by Joshua Fields Millburn (Author),‎ Ryan Nicodemus (Author)

About The Book Minimalism is the thing that gets us past the things so we can make room for life’s most important things—which actually aren’t things at all. At age 30, best friends Joshua Fields Millburn & Ryan Nicodemus walked away from their six-figure corporate careers, jettisoned most of their material possessions, and started focusing on what’s truly important. After a pair of life-changing events, Joshua & Ryan discovered minimalism, allowing them to eliminate their excess material things so they could focus on life’s most important “things”: health, relationships, passion, growth, and contribution.
