Running Charlotte’s Real Estate Scene Written By Mallory Benz Professional Photo Courtesy Jonathan Berkon Photography

Joan Goode, a real estate agent with Dickens Mitchener, runs this town in more ways than one.

While friends and family know Goode as someone who is always finding ways to give back to the community, the city of Charlotte knows her as its greatest ambassador. “Charlotte is an easy sell,” she explains. “With the mountains and the beaches just hours away, it’s easy to understand why more than 40 people move here each day. The region is booming, and I’m excited to be in the center of it all.”

due diligence, all roads led to real estate and I guess you can say the rest is history!” That’s when Goode’s legacy with Dickens Mitchener began, and she hasn’t looked back.

For Goode, that is her favorite thing about her job: acclimating others to Charlotte. To her, there’s so much more to moving than finding a house. Relocating involves the little things, such as where the children are going to go to school, where the pediatrician’s office is located and more.

Goode has a fondness for the area after all – she’s an Asheville, N.C., native; a graduate of N.C. State; and decided at an early age that Charlotte would be the perfect city to raise a family with husband, Lane. In 1996, the fledgling couple moved to the Queen City from Los Angeles, Calif., where Goode worked long hours in the technical sales field. While her professional career in California was fulfilling and exciting, the constantly anticipated earthquakes were not.

“Purchasing or selling a home can be an extremely stressful experience for everyone involved,” says Goode. “My job is to absorb that stress, keep my clients calm and make the process as fun as possible by introducing them to all Charlotte has to offer.”

“I love getting to know each and every family,” explains Goode. “I enjoy welcoming people into their future home, seeing their faces light up when they walk through the front door and watching as they begin visualizing how they’re going to make it their own. It’s an incredibly rewarding career.” Joan and the Vane Mingle CRRA Rookie of the Year Group Circa 2005

Upon returning to North Carolina, the family grew from two to five in fourteen short months. Determined to spend time with her three children, Goode decided to support her family from home. The stay-at-home mom busied herself, teaching aerobics at the Brace Family YMCA (formerly the Siskey YCMA), but longed for more – she yearned for a position that would not only be local, but also boasted flexibility, as family remained important. She decided to investigate a real estate career in 2005. “While I understood that being in real estate required a love for people and houses, I knew that there was more to being an agent,” she explains. “So I decided to interview several agents in the field. I wanted to know what defined a successful realtor and if the life was for me. After conducting my research and doing my

Since joining the Dickens Mitchener team 12 years ago, Good has earned a number of accolades. During her first year in the industry, she received the 2005 Dickens Mitchener Rookie of the Year and Vane Mingle Rookie of the Year awards. In the years following she has consecutively been ranked one of the company’s top producers, been named a Five Star Real Estate Agent Award recipient nine times and been recognized as the Charlotte Regional Realtors Association’s 2011 Committee Chair of the Year. The success she’s experiencing within the industry explains why Goode is highly sought after to represent clients during the purchase and sale of their homes. A responsibility she doesn’t take lightly.

But helping others make such personal decisions day in and day out can be a challenge. Many times, Goode has to make a conscious effort to not make every transaction her personal “leaky roof” as she likes to describe it. “If there’s one piece of advice I can give to the industry’s up and comers, it’s this: it’s okay to take a step back and gain perspective,” she explains. “This profession forces you to get close to other people – you’re essentially helping someone make their most expensive purchase to date. As a result, you must sometimes step back, take your emotions out of the equation and rely on patience, even if that means occasionally acting as a sounding board. If I can accomplish this at the appropriate times, everyone benefits.” It’s this ability to maintain professionalism during even the most stressful moments that has propelled Goode to the top of her field. She closed on 48 homes in 2017, resulting in more than $30 million in sales. For Goode though, the career she’s built over the past 12 years hasn’t been about “making the sale,” but has rather served as a catalyst for her to become involved with the causes that are more near and dear to her heart, such as the many charities and non-profits she supports. These include the Housing Opportunity Foundation, the non-profit arm of Charlotte Regional Realtors; Christ Lutheran Church’s Freedom School program; and The Sandbox.

And while running around Charlotte or running the city’s real estate scene is important to Goode, family always comes first. She and her husband, Lane, enjoy vacationing with their daughter Rachel, a junior at the University of Virginia; and twin sons Dillon, a sophomore at App State; and Daniel, a sophomore at UNC Wilmington. The group recently vacationed in Mexico and is planning a trip to Copenhagen this spring when Rachel studies abroad for a semester.

“When I retire, I want to be remembered as someone who gave back,” she says. “The work I’ve done with the charities I support is what I am most proud of. Charlotte is the city where we all live, play and work, and I enjoy making it the best it can be – whether that means completing exterior projects on residences owned by individuals in need or running a 5K to raise funds for a local housing non-profit.”

Specializing in accounting, financials and taxes of real-estate agencies and agents for over 20 years.

When not meeting with a client or making Charlotte shine even brighter, Goode can be found running on the greenway. Always preparing for her next race, Goode has run two half marathons every year since 2013. She’s run the Disney Marathon in the past, but her favorite is the Disney Princess half marathon because, “there’s nothing like running a race with a Disney character every quarter mile,” she adds with a smile.

“The key is to find the perfect balance between work and life,” says Goode. “Life is about having a good relationship with God, family and your colleagues. If you’re able to establish a sense of accomplishment within these many areas, then you’ve accomplished the unthinkable – a successful life.”
