Yusof Ghani After working on Hijau series for four years, Yusof Ghani returned to explore the human figure under the series of paintings New Protest Series. Always one to document the changing times, Yusof Ghani placed emphasis on the documentation of human movement to capture historical and social commentary. None more significant than this masterpiece, 050513. Completed on 5th May 2013, it captures the movement of a very significant date in Malaysian history; the 13th General Elections. There were much excitement to the buildup towards the elections, it was highly anticipated and the turnout was the highest in history. Yusof Ghani captured all this with this painting. The shift in the political arena can be seen as the ruling party is represented in blue. Standing tall and resilient, they seem determined to resist sea of change. The sea of change, which comes in the form of the opposition coalition, is represented by the three figures behind which are intertwined with colours as it to represent their parties and unity. The outcome of which was despite their efforts, the ruling party still stands, with a smaller majority. The light colour palette reflects the vibrant environment the generated by General Elections had and the brushstrokes which is rash and free flowing reflects the eagerness of Malaysians for a change. 072 YusoF ghanI (b. Renowned Indonesian Maestro

Hendra Gunawan Born in Bandung, 1918. He taught at the Indonesian Fine Art Academy (ASRI), Yogyakarta in 1957. Hendra took part in founding the Front Seniman (Artists Front) in Bandung, and Pelukis Rakyat (People’s Artists) in Yogyakarta. He also established the art club Pusaka Sunda together with Barli, Obon and some other friends. He is undoubtedly one of the Indonesia’s greatest pioneers of modern art and was considered to be one of the best and most versatile painters in Indonesia. He died in Bali 1983. Hendra Gunawan created paintings conveying his great feelings and deepest emotions for his country and people. He inspired his paintings with sympathy, compassion, and affection about common people. Portrays of women figures, sellers or mother and child were on old theme that constantly revisited throughout the artist’s career. Hendra figures are types, not clearly distinguishable individuals. He used exaggerated profiles, with long necks, protruding noses, and large eyes, echoes the stylization of human form found in wayang. Hendra’s people are never passive victims of their faith; they are always depicted as active subjects. He took the daily lives of people subjects for his paintings and captured them movingly on canvas in his inimitable style. Though Hendra’s art was, from the very beginning focused towards celebrating common people and their struggle that depicts his deep feeling and irony inspiring perspective of life’s most fundamental issue: freedom and hunger, Hendra also love the land and paint some in his several themes. Hendra later paintings are melancholic and emotional as a result of the hardship that he experienced during his thirteen years in Bandung Kebon Waru prison. During his imprisoned time he painted some of his most dreamlike, vibrant and emotional works. He illustrates the sadness and the mystery in a brighter, more saturated, expressionistic and abstract.

Tajuddin Ismail, Dato’ Olive trees are known for its mythical powers. Known as the tree of the Gods, its ability to withstand the harshest of conditions and its nutritious yield have made the olive tree and integral part of many cultures. Even Van Gogh once tried painting the olive trees only to note that “the olive grove has something very secret in it, and immensely old. It is too beautiful for us to dare to paint it or to be able to imagine it”. Often revered for its fruit, in The Olive Tree, Dato’ Tajuddin Ismail captures not that of the fruit, but of the bark. A close inspection of any olive tree and one can view how immensely course the bark is. Weathered, the olive tree goes through a hard life fill with struggles, twist and turns, and uncertainty, but ultimately it will bear fruit. Much like the life of an artist who, from the moment the journey begins, endures a hard life, which only with determination and sheer grit will the artist fulfil his duty. Either a personal experience or an advice for budding artist, the message Dato’ Tajuddin is trying to convey has been elegantly portrayed in The Olive Tree. Tajuddin Ismail is a multi-talented artist. After obtaining his Bachelors in Fine Arts from Mara Institute of Technology (UiTM), he studied Graphic Design at the Art Centre College of Design, Los Angeles, (USA) in 1974 and subsequently pursued his post- graduate in Interior Architecture at Pratt Institute, New York. This wide array of education has broaden Tajuddin’s perspective and often it is reflected in his work. He has been awarded for the prestigious Salon Malaysia, National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur (1979) as well as the Malaysia Design Council (1994) and receiving an Honourable Mention for the Philip Morris, Malaysian Art Awards (1994).

Lee Man Fong

Lee Man Fong was born in Canton, China, 1913. He arrived at Singapore at young age then later moved to Jakarta. He showed great artistic talent from a young age. He participated in the Association’s First Art Exhibition invited by the head of the Dutch East Indies Associations (1931). Lee Man Fong was a successful commercial artist before becoming a full time artist in 1941. His successful exhibitions in Bandung and Jakarta made him a fast growing artist at that time. He received scholarship from the Dutch government to study painting in Holland (1946). In 1952 he returned to Indonesia and gained more accolades as well as acknowledgement. Lee Man Fong officially became the presidential palace’s painter and chief curators of its collection in 1961 and compiled a 5 volume edition of President Sukarno’s art collection. He died in 1988 and remembered as a western vigorous painter and an oriental unique oil painting painter. During 1952, Lee quietly developed his art, which focused on thorough observation of life and nature around him. Lee tried to translate the aesthetic and style of Chinese brush painting into oil on canvas. Considering the differences in texture and consistency between ink and oil, Lee tried to direct the effect of an ink brush with his strokes, which is not a simple act. A large part of these works featured animals, such as the chicken, doves, goldfish, storks, and gibbons. Doves has become Lee Man Fong’s beloved and sought after works in spite of Goldfishes and other animals such as horses, cockatoos, tigers and dogs. Lee Man Fong’s paintings of Doves are especially noteworthy. Since some forty years ago, his animal themes had made a far reaching accomplishment and recently have been eagerly sought after in Europe and America. A testimony to his mastery of technique and realization of theme, this painting depicts the world of the doves as peaceful and calm, but at the same time dynamic. The doves in pairs symbolize a good match, which may be further extended to mean “peaceful coexistence.”

Awang Damit ‘Pun Pun Kian Menghilang’, which translates to ‘The Diminishing Bait’ expresses how Awang Damit notices that over time, bait which has been a key element for any fishermen, is slowly diminishing. Due to both the change in environment and over fishing, Awang Damit highlights the seriousness of the situation which if left unattended will lead its impending extinction. Awang Damit has always painted from his childhood experience. Growing up in a fishing village, Awang Damit’s works have always expressed the interaction between nature and mankind. He uses oil and acrylic as his painting medium. In his paintings, everything is reduced to its essential elements, nothing superfluous or unnecessary retained. Colors are essential components. For Awang, the colour grey remains the most sacred and significant of all, because it represents a blurred hope. Awang’s non-representational painting, geometrical forms with diverse lines against subdivided background, is often unique and optimistic in spirit. A spiritual quality is deeply rooted in the distinctive abstract expressionist and obscure shapes of brushstrokes Awang Damit is one of the renowned painters who belong to the second generation of abstract expressionists in modern Malaysian art. His love for arts started in the 70s when he travelled around Sabah to learn painting from various artists. After graduating from UiTM in Fine Arts in 1983, he spent some time in the United States pursuing his Master of Fine Arts degree in 1989. There, Awang gained exposure to the conventions of Western art. Awang Damit now lectures in UITM. He has held positions as the Curator of the Art Gallery and Head of the Fine Arts Department before being appointed an Associate Professor in 2000.

Chuah Seow Keng Born in 1945, Kelantan, Chuah Seow Keng is recognized as one of Malaysia’s leading artists and is well known for his batik and watercolour paintings. In 1968 he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Suddeutsche KunststoffZentrum in Wurzburg, Germany. While attending this academy he specialized in fiberglass sculpture, a difficult, but rewarding art medium. While being recognized as an accomplished sculptor, Seow Keng is also acknowledged as a masterful batik artist. His abilities as an artist were noticed at a very early age. He was exposed to the art of batik painting by his father Dato’ Chuah Thean Teng, who pioneered batik painting as a fine art form. Seow Keng excels in this intricate art technique and was chosen to demonstrate his batik skills at the International Freundschaftheim in Buckeburg, Germany. During 1974 Germany’s Television Channel ZweitesDeutsches Fernsehen-Trans-Tel made a documentary film of Seow Keng and his brothers who demonstrated the art of batik painting for German viewers. Seow Keng returned to Malaysia after completing his studies in Germany. Soon thereafter, in 1970, the Malaysian Singapore Airline (M.S.A.) commissioned him to do a fibre-glass relief sculpture entitled “Space” for their lpoh office. The following year M.S.A. commissioned another fibre-glass sculpture entitled “Time & Space” for its Penang office. Seow Keng also created the “Bank Crest”, a fiberglass sculpture commissioned by the Bank Negara of Malaysia and that sculpture is currently being displayed at the entrance of the Bank Negara in Penang. Another fiberglass sculpture entitled “COMPOSITION” is on permanent display at the Yahong Art Gallery in Penang, Malaysia. This batik painting Harvesting depict a charm and fabric of rural life. Seow Keng has brought the liveliness into the painting. Its’ content, the use of warm colours and its composition offer a long lost scene from the past. Here, ladies are depicted with wide hips and ample bosoms – a common symbol of fertility, strength and nursing capabilities. It is one of the key characteristic of the Chuah’s artistic inheritance. 192 chuah seoW keng (b. Kelantan, 1945) Market Scene, 2010 Batik: 98 x 95 cm Signed and dated, lower right: S. One of the founders of HBS – Surakarta Cultural Community, he was selected to edit the book of former President Soekarno’s Private Collection of Indonesian Art (Volume I & II) and was appointed to care and curate for the state art collection. Dullah has never been overly concerned with the innate beauty of charisma of a subject, nor has he manipulated objects and people in such a way as to gain a certain flashy style or shallow substance of his works. In 1960’s Dullah developed a technique for the use of oil paints that was to become his trademark. This technique involved the integrated use of transparent oil washes that duplicated the characteristic of watercolor. The transparency of Dullah’s approach to oils allowed his skilled and graceful brush work to create nuances of color and tone as backgrounds for his subject.

A front runner of abstract art, this is Ismadi’s interpretation of a humble red rose. This painting, while it does not take the form of a rose itself encapsulates, all the energy and vibrancy associated with one. Its stem while less attractive is painted with the rigor needed to form a beautiful flower and its texture, to signify its thorny structure. Ismadi carefully uses different shades of red for this picture, almost to represent ever red found in all roses. And the use of yellow, one can only image the importance of sunlight not just for a rose, but life itself.
