A protégé of Khalil Ibrahim, Ismail Mat Hussin stands today on his own and has kept true to batik painting until today. Batik art has ascended from a humble and practical worn piece of cloth and alleviated to fine art today and Ismail Mat Hussin is one of the very finest in this art. Ismail Mat Hussin’s batik combines warm tones and earthy hues from a restricted palette of colors to depict everyday rural scenes with lively good humor. His human figures are drawn more real looking people with dull background surroundings and Ismail’s trademark is heavy limbs with the muscles rendered mosaic-like and graceful movements of figures. The works of the artist are collected and can be seen in prestigious institutions such as National Visual Arts Gallery, Malaysia Airline System, National Museum, Esso Malaysia, Bank Negara, and Petronas Gallery.

His output of pastels is low, and therefore rare, and thus are valued higher compared to watercolours. Many art lovers are of the opinion that his pastels may be superior to his watercolour, and this particular piece for auction is a superb example of his fantastic control of colours and strokes of his pastels.

Excitingly, the artist unveils the beginnings of new aesthetic directions in “Green Book”, building on past experiences to further his explorations of the formal tenants of art creation. Equally as exciting for those who avidly follow Zulkifli’s career is the opportunity to view one of his installations, which is the genre he has gathered acclaim for, at important international events such as the Venice Biennale. A turning point work for the artist, resulting from the academic pre-production process prized by critical contemporary art, “Green Book” is a stunning visual explanation for the adoration Zulkifli receives from critics, curators and collectors alike. 70

Through his long career spanning over 50 years. Khalil Ibrahim has held many solo and group exhibitions in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Switzerland. He was Vice Chairman of Malaysian Watercolour Organisation from 2002 to 2003. His skills in drawing, watercolour and acrylic, are in styles that move from the almost real to the almost abstract. Khalil’s preference for the human figure has led to memorable images of men and women in the East Coast Malay fishing villages against stark backgrounds of blues and greens and watercolour landscape of villages. From his drawing or sketches, is no doubt he understands the value of the first attempt - the quick sketch or the initial drawing. For it is frequently within that first observation that the artist captures the essence of the thing observed through his/her feeling of, or reaction to, the subject they are observing. It is this initial relationship (to the subject), which often proves to be the most profound, for an artist.

The late Myanmar Artist, U Min Kyi was born in his family’s farm in Kayin Hla Village near Hinthada Town. He studied the basic principles of painting under the master artist, U Kyee Sein. His impressionistic city and country scenes led to his having the nickname “Out-door Min Kyi.” His work has been exhibited extensively at home and abroad and can also be found in the National Museum in Rangoon. Many of his oil paintings were of outdoor sceneries, he believed that colours were just there to deceive the viewers and his strong idea was to captivate the viewers by presenting art with sincerity and simplicity. In fulfilling his one lifelong wish, Merlin Gallery held his solo exhibition “Outdoor Days” in 2015.
