BIDDING The Auctioneer accepts bids from those present in the saleroom, from telephone bidders, or by absentee written bids left with Masterpiece in advance of the auction. Bidding will be done in Ringgit (MYR). The auctioneer will not specifically identify bids placed on behalf of the consignor.

Buyers are advised to inspect the property themselves. Masterpiece is not liable for any error or omission in this catalogue. All descriptions of dimensions are approximate only.

BIDDING INCREMENTS The auctioneer will normally start with bids below the low estimate and may at his own discretion increase bids. The standard increments are:-

INFORMATION FOR BUYERS

TELEPHONE BIDS Prospective buyers may bid by telephone during the course of the auction. Arrangements for this service must be confirmed with the Bid Department at least 2 hours prior to the auction. Telephone bids may be recorded. By bidding on the telephone, prospective buyers consent to the recording their conversation. Masterpiece will not be responsible for errors of failures to execute bids. SUCCESSFULL BIDS The fall of the auctioneer’s hammer indicates the final bid, at which time, the buyer assumes full responsibility for the lot. CONDITIONS OF SALE FOR BUYERS

Together with the terms as set out in “INFORMATION FOR BUYERS”, These Conditions contain all terms in which a buyer contracts with a seller in respect of the sale of a Lot. These terms may be amended at any time by way of notices or oral announcements during the sale and auction. The buyer agrees to be bound by these Conditions when he/she bids to purchase a Lot. 1. Meanings In these terms and conditions, the following words and expressions have the following meanings:

CONDITIONS OF SALE Masterpiece CONDITIONS OF SALE FOR BUYERS governs the terms and conditions of contract between the buyer and the seller of a lot and is set out later in this catalogue. Persons who have been registered as bidders will be deemed to have read and be fully aware of and subject to the terms as stated in the CONDITIONS OF SALE FOR BUYERS.. No reliance should be placed on oral representations made by any person at the auction.

“Buyer” means the successful bidding buyer of a Lot;

ESTIMATES Estimates are based upon prices recently paid at auction for comparable property, condition, rarity, quality and provenance. Estimates are subject to revision. Buyers should not rely upon estimates as prediction of actual selling prices. Estimates do not include the buyer’s premium. For estimate on request, please contact us for further information.

“Hammer Price” means the price at which a Lot is sold to Buyer;

RESERVES The reserve is the confidential minimum price the consignor will accept. The reserve will not normally exceed the low estimate.

“Reserve Price” means in respect of a Lot, the minimum price which the Seller is prepared to accept from a buyer;

BUYERS PREMIUM Masterpiece charges a premium to the buyer on the final bid price of each lot sold at 12% (twelve percent). VIEWING/ADMISSION Pre-auction viewings are open to the public and free of charge. Buyers are strongly advised to examine the lots thoroughly, Condition reports are available. Masterpiece reserves the right to refuse admission and participation in its auctions. REGISTRATION Prospective buyers need to register for a numbered bidding paddle. Details of bank accounts are required for credit reference purposes.

ABSENTEE BIDS Absentee bids are written instructions from prospective buyers directing Masterpiece to bid on their behalf up to a maximum amount specified for each lot. Masterpiece staff will attempt to execute an absentee bid at the lowest possible price taking into account the reserve price. If identical bids are received from two or more parties, the first bid received by Masterpiece will take priority. The auctioneer may execute absentee bids directly from the rostrum. Absentee Bids Forms are available in this catalogue. Absentee bids submitted on “no-reserve” lots will, in the absence of a higher bid, be executed at the amount of the bid.

“Catalogue” means the Catalogue prepared by Masterpiece which describes and illustrates all Lots for sale by Masterpiece; “Conditions” means these terms and conditions;

“Lot” means each piece of property as described in the Catalogue for which bids are invited for purchase; “Masterpiece”, “our”, “we”, “us” means Masterpiece Auction sdn. bhd;

“Seller”, means in respect of a particular Lot, the seller of that Lot and his personal representatives; “MYR” means the lawful currency of Malaysia. Except where the context otherwise requires, words importing the singular shall include the plural and vice versa, words importing any one gender shall include all genders, and words importing persons shall include companies and corporations and vice versa. Unless otherwise stated, references to Clauses are references to Clauses in these Conditions. The headings appearing in this Agreement are inserted for ease of reference only and shall in no way define, limit or construe the terms and conditions appearing herein. 2. Parties to the sale of a Lot Unless otherwise stated, a Buyer contracts with a Seller to purchase a Lot. Masterpiece acts as the Seller’s agent in respect of the sale of a Lot.

Bidding Registering. Prospective buyers are required to register for a numbered bidding paddle. Copies of bank accounts may be required to be shown to Masterpiece for credit references and/or payment purposes. Reserve. Unless otherwise stated, all Lots are offered for sale, subject to a Reserve Price which is confidential between the Seller and Masterpiece. Bids may be placed by representatives of Masterpiece on behalf of the Seller up to the Reserve Price. There is no obligation on Masterpiece to identify bids placed on behalf of a Seller. Types of bids. Bids may be accepted from those present at the auction and from telephone bidders, or by absentee written bids left with Masterpiece prior to the auction. By bidding by telephone, all prospective buyers consent to the recording of all conversation and bids. Currency. Prices of all Lots are in Ringgit Malaysia and all bids shall be made in Ringgit Malaysia. Final bid. The fall of the auctioneer’s hammer indicates acceptance of the final bid, at which time the Buyer enters into a full valid and binding contract with the Seller to purchase the Lot. The results of absentee bids will be notified to the prospective buyer after the auction. Risk and responsibility of the Lot (but not title) pass to the Buyer seven calendar days from the date of the sale or earlier if full payment is made and delivery made to the Buyer. Buyer’s responsibility. When bidding, a prospective buyer accepts personal responsibility to pay the Hammer Price of the Lot for which he bids if he is successful, together with the premium price of 12% (twelve percent) of the hammer price. Limited warranty No warranty. Neither the Seller nor Masterpiece makes any warranty in respect of the description of any Lot, its value or its quality. Save for the limited warranty set out in this Clause 4(b) below, the Buyer purchases a Lot “as is” without any representation or warranty of any kind by Masterpiece or the Seller. The contents of the Catalogue are statements of opinion only and do not constitute any representation or warranty whatsoever in respect of any Lot. Limited warranty. The Seller and Masterpiece only warrant that the Lot is related to the artist named in its description in the Catalogue. In the event of any allegation of lack of authenticity or forgery, the Buyer is required to notify Masterpiece in writing within a period of 30 days (the “Notice”) from the date of auction. Contents of Notice. The Notice shall include written evidence from a reputable independent expert who is able to show that the Lot is a forgery. Masterpiece or the Seller reserves the right to request for further evidential proof from other experts if in their respective opinions either of them is not satisfied with the finding of the Buyer’s expert. Refund. In the event that Masterpiece is satisfied with the evidence as enclosed in the Notice and subject to (i) receipt of the full refund from the Seller and (ii) the return of the Lot in such condition as it was sold, a refund of the purchase price for that Lot will be made to the Buyer. The liability of Masterpiece and the Seller is limited to the purchase price of such Lot. Neither Masterpiece nor the Seller shall be liable for any other damages, costs and expenses that may be incurred in presenting the Notice. Conflict of opinion. In the event of conflict of opinion between the Buyer’s expert and the expert appointed by Masterpiece or the Seller, or if it can be shown that tests of authenticity would involve scientific process which could damage or otherwise jeopardize the condition of the Lot and which scientific process did not exist at the time of the publication of the Catalogue, no refund will be made of the affected Lot. No assignment of Limited Warranty. The Limited Warranty in this Clause 4 is for the benefit of the Buyer only and cannot be assigned to any third party.

6. Non-payment Where a Buyer fails to make payment with cleared funds within the stipulated time, Masterpiece and/or the Seller shall be entitled, in addition to all other rights and remedies available under the law, to :(a) charge default interest at the rate of 1.5% per month on the outstanding sums due from the Buyer; (b) to commence legal proceedings against the Buyer for recovery of all outstanding sums, including interest, legal fees, costs and other expenses on a full indemnity basis; (c) rescind the sale of the Lot; (d) to resell the property on such terms as they deem fit and to set-off the proceeds of sale against the outstanding sums unpaid by the Buyer; (e) to hold the Lot as security; pledge or lien pending payment of all outstanding sums due from the Buyer. 7. Copyright The copyright in all images, illustrations and literature, including the Catalogue is the property of Masterpiece and shall not be used by the Buyer without the prior written consent of Masterpiece. No warranty is made by Masterpiece and the Seller that the Buyer of a Lot shall acquire any intellectual property rights in it or to reproduce it. 8. Miscellaneous (a) Notwithstanding anything stated in these Conditions, the Buyer shall indemnify Masterpiece and the Seller on a full indemnity basis, in respect of any loss, damage, cost or expense that may be incurred by either the Seller or Masterpiece in respect of any breach by the Buyer of these Conditions. (b) If any part of this agreement is found by any courts to be invalid, illegal or unenforceable, that part may be discounted and the rest of the agreement shall continue to be valid and enforceable to the fullest extent permitted by law. (c) Masterpiece will hold Buyer’s personal data and may communicate it to affiliated companies worldwide for the purposes of enabling the Buyer to consign or purchase property or services and, unless the Buyer objects, advising of forthcoming sales, events and service. (d) These Conditions are subject to Indonesia law, which shall apply to its construction as well as to its effect. (e) Where a translation of this agreement has been provided, the English language version shall prevail in case of conflict.

GST

(a)

The standard rate of 6% GST will be charged on hammer price ONLY for Lots marked with * and will be borne by the buyer

(b)

For commissions and related charges concerning the purchase of a lot, 6% GST will be charge where applicable. Ie commissions, insurance, transportation.

Payment, Title and Collection of purchases Deadline for payment. All payments for sold Lots must be made within seven calendar days from the date of sale. (b) Title. No title in the Lot will pass to the Buyer until all amounts due to Masterpiece as stated in Clause 3(f) above have been paid, even in circumstances where Masterpiece has released the Lot to the Buyer before full payment has been made. (c) Payment modes. Payments must be in Ringgit Malaysia and may be made in telegraphic transfer to Masterpiece’s bank account. Please include the Buyer’s name and invoice number in the bank instructions. (a)

Collection. The Buyer is required to collect his purchase from the premises of Masterpiece and pay for all delivery and shipping costs. Masterpiece may assist the Buyer in making packing and shipping arrangements at the Buyer’s own costs and risk. Storage charges. All purchases will initially be held for collection at the premises of Masterpiece at no charge for a period of fourteen days from the date of sale. Subsequently Masterpiece will charge the Buyer storage charges, together with all other transport, handling, removal, insurance and other expenses where a Lot is transported to another location pending collection. Limit on insurance cover. Masterpiece provides general insurance cover for sold Lots for a period of up to seven days from the date of sale of such Lots. Subsequently, risk of such Lots will transfer to the respective Buyers.

This bowl features the standard phoenix-and-peony motif and has a prominent everted rim which is filled with the eight Buddhist emblems. The rim is also scalloped and gilded on the edges.

Wine ewer, with a mark of “Da Xing” and embossed phoenix figures. It has finely engraved design on the wine ewer and its handle, which set against a dotted background are typical of Chinese art motifs of the Tang Dynasty. It is used for fermenting all sorts of things. Also used as a punch bowl during Chinese New Year and for many other purposes, kamcheng is ubiquitous in Peranakan culture.This kamcheng belongs to a class of Chinese export porcelain made for Peranakan buyers of Southeast Asia. Called nyonyaware, it is distinctive for its bright pastel colours, profusion of decoration, and preferred motifs of peony and phoenix. This kamcheng which is large was usually used to store or serve food. The knob on the cover takes the form of a lion-dog, and the interior is decorated with parakeet among flowers. “娘惹瓷”特指19世纪末20世纪初晚清民国时期，马六甲海峡的峇峇人（主要是马六甲、槟榔屿、新加坡三地）订制、由景德镇生产、专用于其族使用的一种装饰华丽的粉彩瓷器。它们是旧时的娘惹峇峇平日用的和隆重仪式上不可缺少的重要角色，在娘惹峇峇的生活中，瓷器已经不仅仅是一件器具，而是可以把握和触及的那个遥远的“故国”的脉络。主题纹饰多为凤凰、牡丹，而很少出现中国本土常用的山水和人物。盖盅”Kamcheng”用闽南话发音是“感情”的谐音。峇峇娘惹结婚时有一个习俗，新郎会準备「盖盅」盛红白汤圆，并与新娘一起吃下，表示彼此接受了这段婚姻。以“盖盅甜蜜蜜”之意，盖中内盛入大小汤圆黏在一起的概念，寓意人“和”人相处和谐融洽的情感。娘惹瓷经典色彩，缅怀峇峇娘惹文化的浪漫情怀，透过嫣红的牡丹、五彩的凤凰及盘旋缠绕在碧绿艳粉的底子上无疑展露着“娘惹瓷”的美感。

Shaparel held his first solo exhibition, Pusaka Rimba at Tuanku Fausiah Museum and Gallery, USM in 2007 and has gone on to hold a few solo exhibitions including, Natural Enviroment (2011), Beauty for Survival (2012), and Imbas Umbi (2014). Ho Hee Khim The late Ho Hee Khim studied art under the guidance of his elder brother, the late Ho Khay Beng, and subsequently learnt batik under Tan Kok Hwa. He is known primarily for his orchid still-lifes. Ho Hee Khim and his brother, Khay Beng, held a joint exhibition in Dewan Sri Pinang in 1975. In addition to being an artist, he is a member of the Penang Art Society. He incorporated watercolour techniques to help accentuate the tones of the petals and used chinese art techniques with swift strokes to add more body resulting in a fascinating insight into the beauty of orchids. His paintings are collected internationally.

After moving to Singapore in 1948, Chen Wen Hsi proceeded to teach at the Chinese High School (1914-1968) and then the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (1951-1959). As an artist, Chen Wen Hsi actively participated in several exhibitions outside Singapore which incidentally promoted Singapore. Among the many awards he has received are the Public Service Star (1964), a Gold Medal by the National Museum of History, Taiwan (1980), the first recipient of the ASEAN Cultural and Communication Award for outstanding artists (1987), and an honorary doctorate from the National University of Singapore. Chen Wen Hsi is Singapore’s pioneer artist that combines Chinese and Western techniques in his semi abstract work. His constant eagerness to strive for something new led him to learn finger painting, a technique that dates back from the Tang Dynasty. This drawing style has enabled him to produce unpredictable broken strokes on paper. Chen Wen Hsi is renowned for his skills in depicting animals, of which it is the gibbons that he is mostnassociated with. He is also famed for his Chinese paintings of sparrows and squirrels. 66

Suliyat Buamar states “I paint according to a simple principle: Man does, God decides and I paint whatever comes out of my heart. Creation is part of my daily life: I breathe, I sleep, I walk, I dream and I paint.” Some years ago, the Bali art scene accorded Buamar the name “The Renegade”. Buamar has had various exhibitions throughout Bali and Java in Indonesia. A multi-talented painter, sculptor, designer and musician, Agustian has been actively showing his art around the world. In his early teens, he met the famous Javanese Roedyat Martadiradja who enlightened him through a gift of bamboo stick with Chinese ink and told him to sketch whatever he saw for the rest of his life. Agustian became acquainted with the late maestro Affandi and immersed himself in the abstract impressionistic painting style. A high profile contemporary artist, Khoo Sui Hoe has held more than 40 solo exhibitions since 1995 at many major cities in Asia, Australia and USA and exhibits actively in open shows in Japan, the Philippines, India, Ireland, Germany and Brazil. In 1970, Khoo was awarded the John D Rockefeller 3rd Fund Grant to study contemporary art in the USA, where he mastered etching and serigraphy at the Pratt Grahpic Centre in New York. He returned to Malaysia to form the Utara Group in Penang, which led to 18 shows throughout the Peninsula. Khoo relocated to USA in 1982 but continued to make his presence felt through exhibitions in Malaysia, forming again, the Alpha Utara Gallery in Penang in 2015. a. Khalil Ibrahim is one of the few Malaysians who received a state scholarship to attend art training at the prestigious Central St. Martins School of Art and Design in London. Through his long career spanning over 50 years, Khalil Ibrahim has held many solo and group exhibitions in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Switzerland. M Zain, also known as Mohamed Zain Bin Idris. To Malaysian watercolour paintings enthusiast, M Zain is a well-known self-taught artist, who has spent more than half of his life as a watercolour painter. Most of his paintings portray the nostalgic and tranquil landscapes of his childhood domain. To him, painting fishing boats amidst white sandy beaches and scenes of fishing villages with gracious waving of coconut leaves reflects timeless serenity and tranquillity. His contribution and diligence as a painter was given due recognition by Frank Sullivan in his poem, titled “Fisherman Artist”. Among His collectors are the Royal Families of Terengganu and Johor, the late Tun Hussein Onn, the MB of Terengganu, Tan Sri Haji Wan Moktar Ahmad, Puan Sri Kuok and also Standard Chartered Bank. His paintings are also sought after by foreigner working in Malaysia. Ismail Latiff graduated from the MARA Institute of Technology in 1979. Ibrahim’s medium was one he coined himself “printage” – a combination of both printing and collage.Though he has held exhibitions internationally in cities such as London, new York, and Copenhagen, Ibrahim’s big break came when his works were exhibited alongside Andy Warhol and Salvador Dali at the Daif Abdullah Al Salam Gallery in Kuwait (1977). Tay Bak Koi is celebrated for his lyrical and romantic portrayal of fishing villages, kampong scenes and urban landscapes, as well as his signature stylised rendition of the water buffalo, Tay Bak Koi is one of Singapore most regarded second-generation artists. Tay talent for drawing was cultivated at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts where he began studying in 1957 under pioneer artist, Cheong Soo Pieng. Although taught in the best traditions of western and eastern art, Tay was, however, dissatisfied with the structural rigidity and formal instructional methods of the school. He soon became aware that to be an artist, he had to carve out a distinctive stylistic direction for himself. He studied at the Art Students League of New York, America for oil painting under Sidney Gross, before leaving representational painting behind for Abstract Expressionism in 1962 and met Leo Manso and Victor Candell during the Provincetown Workshop in Massachusetts in 1964. By then he began to create abstract painting-collages by integrating Chinese artistic principles with Chinese calligraphic strokes. He has held many solo exhibitions, including at the Ruth Sherman Gallery, San Diego in 1965, National Library Singapore in 1966. During his residency at the Singapore Tyler Print Institute in 2006, he created an innovative “water collage” technique with Richard Hungerford, which he continued to exhibit the series locally and overseas, mainly in Southeast Asia.

Though young, he has received several awards for his artwork on antidrugs illustration design from Yang Dipertuan Agong, Royal King of Malaysia. (1981), Selangor Chinese Townhall (1983), Spritual Assembly of the Bahais of Malaysia (1986) and Penang Anti-drugs group (1989). Yap Chin Hoe has been a full time artist since he graduated from the Malay- sian Institute of Arts in 1991. Tan Gaik Hoon is one of Malaysia’s established fine artist. Gaik Hoon’s work is known to be unique and original as she is known to be one of the few who uses watercolour splendidly. She graduated from the Kuala Lumpur College of Art with a Diploma in Fine Art in 1994 where is a part time artist while teaching art. A member of Malaysian Watercolour Society, Gaik Hoon’s work has been seen around the public and private galleries around Malaysia as well as in other countries. Her more recent solo exhibition was held at the Aidea Art in Plaza TTDI in a show entitled ‘Nyonya Series’. Apart from that, she has been actively involved with art exhibitions where her works were seen at group shows like the ‘Rural Malaysia’ show at the Shah Alam Gallery, the ‘Pemandangan Malaysia’ show organized by the National Art Gallery as well as the ‘Secretary Day Show’ held at the Metro Art Gallery. Her work had also travelled to Seoul in South Korea where it was exhibited at the 22nd Korea New Art Festival. Apart from that, she was the Consolation Prize winner of the 1993 Competition organized by Kontena Nasional & the Shah Alam Gallery where he works have been accepted in the collection in Europe and other countries.

He was educated in Singapore and graduated from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. As a second-generation Nanyang artist, Chia was influenced by the works of Chen Wen Hsi, Cheong Soo Pieng and Georgette Chen. In 1959, he was the first artist from the Straits Settlement to receive a scholarshipto pursue art at Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts de Paris.Chia had more than 20 solo exhibitions. 40 years of Yu Chian’s Art at Penang Museum and Art Gallery in 1989; Chia Yu Chian Memorial Exhibition at The Art Gallery, Penang in 1997 to name a few. In 1959, Chia was awarded with Honorable Mention of the “Salon des Indépendants” and “Société des Artistes Français”, in Paris. His paintings were featured in Christie’s and Sotheby’s S.E. Dato Tajuddin Ismail is a multi-talented artist who graduated with a Bachelors in Fine Art from MARA Institute of Technology (UiTM) then pursued Graphic Design at the Art Centre College of Design, Los Angeles (USA) in 1974 and subsequently done post- graduate in Interior Architecture at Pratt Institute, New York. This wide array of education has broadened Tajuddin’s perspective and often it is reflected in his work. Lee Man Fong was one of a rare artist who received honor by critics and collectors across Asia. As an Oriental artist, Lee man Fong has renewed and transformed Western oil painting by imbuing it with the essence of Chinese ink painting, achieving a mutual identity between subject and object, at the same time vastly opening the restrictions on traditional Chinese painting. In short, he created a unique “Man-Fong style”. Besides his great intense in observing the nature especially animal such as gold fish and doves, dancing women or figure paintings were Lee’s most cherished subject. Lee Man Fong, often, made paintings of Balinese subjects. Some of these were clearly based on Willem Hofker’s work.
