Professor Dr. Cheah Thien Soong was born in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia in 1942 and trained for three years under the guidance from the pioneering Figures of Nanyang Painting such as Chen Wen Hsi and Cheong Soo Pieng in Chinese and Western art, Thien Soong has established a very strong foundation in both traditional and contemporary art. Cheah is considered the second generation of Nanyang style artist, and has established Seremban Institute of Art in 1985. In 1988, he joined Malaysia Institute of Art as a lecturer in Oriental Art. Cheah Thien Soong is good in manipulation of colour and his contemporary planning in his works. These two features could be easily seen in his works, and from an important linguistic element in his way of expressing contemporary spirit; it is a lot reflective of his style in embodying Western art in his painting. In the choice of subject matters, he equally displays his adventurous spirit. He is fond of portraying relatively unknown fowl, called “Yangji” (Western-hen), because no one has ever devoted so much effort in painting this fowl. This also reflects his sincere attitude to life and his ideology of “ all living things are equal”. In 2002, he has branched out from canvas and taken up the challenge of painting on porcelain, creating works with Malaysian subjects painted onto Jingdezhen clay. In his involvement in art for almost 50 years, he had participated in various exhibitions and won various awards both local and international. He recently had his very successful solo show,’ Cheah Thien Soong: Nanyang Ink Painting’ in National Visual Arts Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, 2015 and was chosen to exhibit in a show,The Enchanting Orient at Starhill Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, 2016. Dr Cheah Thien Song received his doctorate from the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico in 2002. Prof Dr Cheah Thien Soong graduated from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore in 1962.

AWANG DAMIT AHMAD (b. Sabah, 1956) Payarama Baru“Teratai Merah II”, 2015 Mixed media on canvas: 81 x 81 cm Signed, dated and titled on the reverse MYR 35,000 - 45,000 USD 7,806 - 10,036

The unique abstract expressionistic brushwork visible in Payarama Baru: “Teratai Merah II” has placed Awang Damit Ahmad at the forefront of our malaysia’s contemporary art scene today. The present lot is the continues series of the artist’s fourth stylistic phase known as “Payarama”, which reflects upon the interconnection between nature and man. This series speaks about the life of a farmer, which is vulnerable to and dependent on the whims of the weather. This work expresses a profoundly spiritual quality that is deeply rooted in his oeuvre. The premeditated use of colours is suggestive of his sensitivity to the varying hues and their associated meanings. Viewing the painting from a distance shows an intuitive and intellectual division of space on the canvas, where the disparate elements suspend in an optimal stasis. According to Professor Dr. Muliyadi Mahamood, “Awang draws his inspiration from his childhood as the son of a fisherman, as well as from his environment full of green luxurious plants. Around him, he saw neighbours planting and working in their gardens; building houses and buildings; fixing roads full of potholes and mud. Awang tried to understand all the human activities around him, and he compared and contrasted them with his artistic activities.

Raduan Man laboriously incorporates both art disciplines for his works by intricately carving out wood blocks and transposing the images on to canvas. The use of canvas as oppose to paper gives Raduan a sturdier material to work with, enabling him the room for experimentation to form the artistic statement, which has shaped him today. Layers of blocks are imprinted, with each block contributing its unique characteristic, which gives depth and complexities to Raduan’s work. Raduan has participated in over 30 group exhibitions and has held 8 solo exhibitions including Fresh Markings, NN Gallery, Kuala Lumpur (2003), Beyond Print – Raduan Man, Gallery Chandan, Kuala Lumpur (2009), and Living Metals, Purple Houz Fine Arts, Petaling Jaya (2012) and Asension to Abstraction, Whitebox, Publika (2016).

He worked at the Ministry of Culture and Youth and was appointed resident artist at Taman Seni Budaya Pahang. In 1986, he studied Fine Arts and Graphics at University Sains Malaysia. He awarded Honorable Mention: Phillip Morris Asian Art Award in 2000 and Honorable Mention: Phillip Morris Asian Art Award in 1999. Nizar believes that in the final analysis, everyone is the same. One may lead a privileged life, a suffering life or am a successful individual but as Nizar portrays in his "Bayang" (Shadow), a metamorphosis from his previous series -"Topeng" (Mask) & later "Faces and Faces", his subjects are just unidentifiable silhouettes. When one looks at the painting, one cannot differentiate the powerful from the subservient, the beautiful from the ugly, and the rich from the poor. Everyone is equal. Everything is open to each viewer’s own personal interpretation. He uses a mix of materials, acrylic paints and texture paste to stunning effect. Since 1985, He had held more than 20 exhibitions, among there’re Conlay Artist Group – MAP @ Publika, Solaris Dutamas, Kuala Lumpur (2011), Kepada Mu Kekasih – National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpu (2010), Melangkau Ufuk – Antara Langit dan Bumi – Galeri Petronas, Kuala Lumpur (2010), Tampannya Budi – National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur (2009), Palestin - National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur (2008), Lakarasa Inderapura - National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur (2007Senika – Hyatt Hotel, Kuantan, Pahang (1985) and WWF – DBKL, Kuala Lumpur (1985) and many more.
