Willem Gerard Hofker Born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, 1902. He studied arts at the academy of Fine Arts, Amsterdam and also learnt under painter W. Witsen and Isaac Israels. He once lived in Bali from 1938 – 1944 together with his wife, Hofker-Reuter. His works were undoubted. His color, texture surface, and contrastive control showed his maturity of painting study. Willem Hofker was a renowned and much sought-after portraitist. Between 1927 and 1981 Hofker made notes on over 1600 paintings, watercolors, etchings, lithos and mezzotints. His color, texture surface, and contrastive control showed his maturity of painting study. His drawing was very refined and smooth, also very poetic. Besides inspired by Balinese women figure, Hofker also painted portraits of his relatives. All are captured in sharply-observed and widely varied attitudes. If no relatives were at hand, Willem would sit before a mirror and draw himself. Hofker left an even larger number of portraits – in various techniques – of his mother, all bearing witness to his great love. In later years his wife Maria was a frequent and very patient subject of portraits in all kinds of techniques. The present lot illustrates one of his objects in portrait paintings. Hofker used a remarkable striking way with the eyes, involving infinite nuances of color and splendid downward illumination. His entire portrait is typified by its especially capable expression, carefully considered compositional unity and subtle color nuances and grey tints in shaded planes. Even the smallest detail is the result of his awareness of the essence of his models.

Mangu Putra’s works arise from intense contact with the world as a conscious expression of his main creative orientation. Representations of natural phenomena, along with the inner pulse of life, form the main stream of his search. The natural world, such as mountains and coasts, are depicted as identifiable objects. Some of his works with abstract designs imply natural images, such as the character of water and the texture and colors of earth or stone. Through his work he expressed his gratitude towards God creations. He gave specific themes on his work from which other painters did not pay attention to. Until now many of his works were collected by art collectors in Indonesia and overseas. This exciting and very talented artist has participated in a number of group and solo exhibitions throughout Indonesia and abroad.

Rudolf Bonnet Born in Amsterdam, 1895. He studied art at the Hendrick de Keijser-school, the Rijksschool voor Kunstnijverheid and the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. He visited Indonesia in 1936 and stayed in Bali from 1931 – 1941. He helped establish the Museum Puri Lukisan and together with Walter Spies founded the Pita Maha Artist’s Association (1936). His works are amongst the collections of former President Soekarno, the Neka Museum, the Agung Rai Fine Art Gallery, the Rijksmuseum Kroller Muller Otterlo and the Sinerg Museum in Laren. During his existence in “Pita Maha” (the creative center for the modernization of Balinese art before the War), a painter society of young Balinese artists, he had successfully maintained a high artistic level of its member producing work of high quality. Bonnet’s figures are always unique and captivating. He has an extraordinary ability to portray impressive faces in a conventional way. Since the beginning of his career, he had deep interest in describing the farmers in their rural surrounding. His subjects are portrayed in an impressive way and full of compassion. He preferred to present his portraiture as a unit, as a single portrayal of a race. The present lot is many of Bonnet’s works that interpret the farmer theme. The figure revealed the story of a peasant in classical state. Here, Bonnet distinctly portrayed the figure with an impressive anatomy of the muscular male body that represents an element of grace and energy. 024 RUDOLF BONNET (Amsterdam, 1895 – 1978) Mannelijk, 1975 Pastel on paper : 71 x 38 cm Signed and dated, lower left: R. Alit Sembodo Alit’s paintings have shown the tendency to become a media for social commentary. He does not purely make social criticism of the wisdom or practices of the ruling politics. He only goes as far as demonstrating the problems of society through the language of his paintings, according to his own perceptive and perception. Indonesian Spectacular is one such commentary, regarding the people of Indonesia after the reformation period which was tumultuous and abusive, breaking down the order of the society, bordering upon anarchism, desperate poverty, worsening violence, and so on. With his combination of strong drawing techniques and the simple colors in the background, the paintings of Alit Sembodo project an image of a dramatic atmosphere of his times. Awards: 2000 – The finalist of the Phillip Morris Art Awards 2000 – The finalist of the Indonesian Art Awards 1999 – The Pratisara Affandi Adi Karya 1999 – The nominee of 40 Best Winsor & Newton Awards

Lee Man Fong Lee’s subject matter included wide range of human figures, landscapes and animals particularly those commonly found in Chinese brush paintings, such as goldfish, doves, chickens, rabbits, horses and tigers. He developed his paintings by creating a personal expression based on observation of live and nature around him. His paintings often are able to transport us to forgotten places in the wilderness, where old trees, withered mambo grow out of hardened rocks. The present lot was one of the many themes about cock and hen. The pair standing on the hardened rock occupies the foreground, while the background is twisted branches of withered bamboo. Lee showed how it is possible to marry many of the most essential elements of both classical painting traditions – light, shadow and realism on the other hand, and expressionism, experienced calligraphic brushwork, and the balance between form and emptiness on the other.

Han Snel Born in 1925 in Scheveningen, Holland, Han Snel arrived in Indonesia as a Dutch soldier in 1946. He had a life-long love affair with Bali. Snel immediately fell in love with the island; a love so deep until he marred a local girl, apply for Indonesia citizenship and embrace Balinese Hinduism. He lived in Ubud from 1950 until his death in 1998. Balinese themes are Han Snel’s specialism, in particular figures done in a more or expressionist style: he himself prefers to describe his manner with its very conspicuous, curved lines, as ‘roundism’. In his works, Snel focused his attention on the beauty of Balinese women. His colors were varied and lean towards the primary with contrasting area of dark shading. His visual imageries, subdued colors and fine lines captured the essence of Ubud and the island as a place where serenity reigned and simple people led an honest life.

Chen Wen Hsi Born in Baigong, Caozhu, 1906. Chen Wen Hsi studied art at the Hsin Hwa Art Academy in Shanghai. He became a lecturer at the Nangyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore. His paintings were strongly influenced by Chan (Zen) and the unorthodox Qing School of Yangzhou. He actively participated in several exhibitions outside Singapore which also incidentally promote Singapore. Wen Hsi’s artistic excellence was recognized. Among the many awards he had received are the Public Service Star in 1964, a Gold Medal by the National Museum of History, Taiwan in 1980, the first recipient of the ASEAN Cultural and Communication Award for outstanding artists in 1987 and received an honorary doctorate from the National University of Singapore. He became famous since his oil study on formalism, cubism, and expressive abstraction. Chen Wen Hsi is Singapore’s foremost painter that combines Chinese and Western techniques in his semi abstract work. Chen Wen-hsi is renowned for his skill in painting animal themes. Chicken, gibbons, herons, carps and squirrels are some of his favourite subjects. Wen Hsi’s constant eagerness to strike for something new led him to learn finger painting – a technique that dates from the Tang Dynasty. This drawing style has enabled him to produce unpredictable broken stroke on paper. He developed his skill in finger painting, ink-and-brush, oil, sketches, abstracts and semi-abstract techniques. Every subject he paints, whether lotuses, gibbons, egrets, monkeys, squirrels, birds, or flowers and trees, is palpably vibrant. Besides gibbons and egrets, squirrels are the series of most representative of Chen’s style. Chen’s creates a dynamic, vigorous and rhythmic experience.

Agung Mangu Putra Mangu Putra’s works arise from intense contact with the world as a conscious expression of his main creative orientation. Representations of natural phenomena, along with the inner pulse of life, form the main stream of his search. The natural world, such as mountains and coasts, are depicted as identifiable objects. Some of his works with abstract designs imply natural images, such as the character of water and the texture and colors of earth or stone. Nevertheless, there is a certain progressive critical vision in Mangu Putra’s way of viewing and interpreting the world. His works are not mirrors of direct observations with the naked eye. Natural objects are shown as if through sophisticated technological imagery, so that they appear artificial, attractive, provocative, and even fantastic. His artistic world is not a natural one but instead is ‘polluted’ by civilization. Mangu’s magnificent landscapes and volcanoes are depicted as majestic, timeless and all powerful, yet quietly dormant. They are breathtaking, yet set within an atmosphere of silent intimidating strength. It is this aspect of his work that sets Mangu apart from his predecessors. It is remarkable how he adapts from one series of work to another, from painting lifelike textures of skin to captivating landscapes or sensual nudes. His feel for colors is always impressive: breathtaking blues for his landscapes, black and whites bonded with a philosophical theme or just translucent colors that captivate the viewers’ attention.

Born in Solo, January 27, 1915, he is the second son of Abdullah Soerjosoebroto, a prominent landscape painter. He studied at the Academia van Beeldende Kunsten in The Hague, the Netherlands. Basoeki Abdullah started painting since he was 5 years old in simple drawing, and at 10 he traveled to Surabaya and Bali where he started portrait painting. During 1933, he held his first exhibition in Bandung. He brought his painting to RMP. Sosrokartono, RA. Kartini’s brother, who was very impressed on Basoeki’s painting. Sosrokartono and Prince of Mangkunegoro VII became the person who greatly supported his painting career until Basoeki become a famous painter. During that time he continued his study at Academia van Beeldende Kunsten in the Hague, the Netherlands. Basoeki Abdullah is one of the most prominent Indonesian maestros in portrait paintings. The late artist was well-known for his realistic paintings. Besides painting of natural beauty and sensuous landscape, he is also noted for his portraits of beautiful women, as well as paintings of scenes from legends that are also tempered with the same lyrical and overly sensual treatment. His great fond of paintings women’s figure perhaps derived from his great interest in exploring the beauty of women that is attractive to paint in any way. There are painters who like to paint nudity. Basoeki was one of the painters who identical with his nude themes. Nudity in art has generally reflected — with some exceptions — social standards of aesthetics and modesty/morality of their time in painting, sculpture and more recently in photography. At all times in human history, the human body has been one of the principal subjects for artists. It has been represented on prehistoric paintings and statutes and in all eras since. The male nude was more common in antiquity, especially in ancient Greece, but today the tendency is for the female nude body to be more highly regarded and represented.

Lee Man Fong Lee Man Fong began his art education in Singapore. Later he moved to Indonesia, where he continued his painting career and became the curator of the presidential collection during the Soekarno period. Lee Man Fong was known for his ability to work with any kind of medium available. He used oil on canvas and hardboard, pastel and watercolour on paper, and pen and ink on cardboard. His works combined Oriental and Western concept in his oeuvre. An exceptional aspect of Lee’s art was his great intense in creating a personal expression through observation of life and nature surrounds him. Lee was quietly developing his art, which focused on thorough observation of life and nature around him. Lee tried to translate the aesthetic and style of Chinese brush painting into oil on canvas. Considering the differences in texture and consistency between ink and oil, Lee tried to direct the effect of an ink brush with his strokes, which is not a simple act. A large part of these works featured animals, such as the chicken, doves, goldfish, storks, gibbons and cows.

Samsul Arifin Samsul Arifin's story is a story of a restless soul. He works on his visual creations involving many things and objects. Samsul had always been very much interested in art. His journey in the art world, however, had not been smooth. He started out in Malang, but the town could not facilitate his artistic aspirations and idealism. Eventually he moved to Yogyakarta to study art at the SMSR (the Secondary School for Visual Arts). Now he continues his study at the department of painting of ISI, Yogyakarta. Objects of still life have become recent theme used by young contemporary painters. They sometimes only represent common object that have been familiar with us but never put into account. Objects like eraser or pencil perhaps do not have deep meaning to a person. On the contrary, for Samsul, this object represents what he feels and thinks. They symbolize how modern people get advantage from using very simple and common thing like eraser, brush and pencil. He keeps questioning about the freedom and the limitation of an artist, about art that is ideally free from any tendency. Samsul's works generally tells of morality and ethics, which he continually questions. As one of the artists who begin their career in the year 2000, like his predecessors, Samsul practices the freedom of choosing his artistic media.

Arie Smit Born in Zaandam, the Netherlands, 1916. He was a student of the Academy of Arts in Rotterdam before working as lithographer for the Dutch Colonial Army in the Dutch Indies prior to the Second World War. He moved to Bali in 1956 to engage in full time painting and became an Indonesian Citizen, produced as well as taught painting at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). Many of his paintings depict the nature of his surrounding environment. He had several solo exhibitions in Bandung Institute of Technology, The Honolulu East West Center, and the Center of Strategic and International Studies in Jakarta. He received the “Dharma Kusuma” art awards from the local government of Bali. Arie Smit is an artist who loves natural beauty and Balinese culture in the form of imaginative painting, painting that express the pure soul of an adventurer, a natural devotee of tropical sunlight. Arie Smit’s painting show breath-taking landscapes, relaxing youths, colorful tropical gardens, glittering seascapes, and quiet temples that evoke a sense of wander. Facades of temple are often shown with human figures in front of them. Arie Smit uses a simple single vanishing point perspective to depict the temple surrounding. His special characteristics were seen by the use of his tropical rich color on the object.

Abdul Aziz Abdul Aziz was born in Purwokerto, Central Java, and showed precocious artistic talent from childhood. His first Diploma was in Social Sciences from Gajah Mada University, after which he studied Art at the Indonesian Fine Arts Academy (ASRI) in Yogyakarta. Due to his exceptional talent he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Academia di Belle Arti in Rome in 1958, where he was awarded two Diplomas, in Painting and in Decoration. On his return to Indonesia in 1965 he lectured in Fine Art at Udayana University and established his studio in Ubud Bali. Abdul Aziz is now regarded as one of Indonesia’s greatest artists of the 20th Century. Originally from Central Java but a resident of Bali for the last part of his life, Aziz was widely known and highly sought after for his realistic paintings of village scenes. Aziz’s paintings include beautiful women, depicted singly or in groups, and portraits both painted and sculpted. Yet his oeuvre stands out as more of an individual contribution to Indonesian art history than most, belonging in a class with artists who are continuously referred to as the ‘greats’: those individual artists that Western-trained or influenced art writers found to be the most original and innovative of their time.

Nasirun Nasirun’s paintings do not simply depict comprehensible scenes, but rather are usually intertwined personifications or animations of his thoughts and quests. He mentions that often he paints to make sense of his concerns. Therefore, there is little sense in trying to understand rationally what he is trying to convey in his art works. His message is meant to be conveyed through senses and emotions. The Javanese characteristic is very strong in his works. At a glimpse other could directly see his works with a strong Javanese culture background. He adopts very interesting themes in his works. He always tells stories or folk tales in painting. Some say his works are horrifying, while actually they embrace a very high sense of humor and allusion as well. He is very skilled in developing plural figures, enabling us to see various figures in one figure. He never uses the same figure to draw the same subject. Various figures sometimes appear in a mess but in an interesting shape. He compiled them into a solid, biting and stunning continual scene that invokes viewers to understand what he means.
