CONDITION OF BUSINESS The conditions of business set up below are information guidance for prospective buyer and seller with any enquiries relating to buying or selling at the auction. We encourage you to read them wisely and thoroughly.
THE BUYER
Estimated Price Estimated price is the price range, which reflects the opinion of our specialist for the price expected to offer at the auction. This should not be relied on as a statement that this price is either at which the lot will sell or its value for any other purpose. Estimated prices are based upon prices recently paid at auction, and the condition of the artworks including the quality, rarity and history of ownership (provenance). Reserve Price The reserve is the confidential minimum price the seller is willing to accept and below which a lot not be sold. Buyer’s Premium Buyers are reminded that the price to be paid will be the sum of the final bid price plus the buyer’s premium. The rate of buyer’s premium for each lot is 22 % (twenty two percent) of the hammer price.
BEFORE THE AUCTION
Viewing Pre-sale viewings are strongly recommended for prospective buyers in order to examine the artworks thoroughly. Pre-sale viewing is open for the public at no charge and usually displayed for 2 (two) days prior to the sale. Condition Reports Condition reports are available upon request. They are statements of opinion and should not be relied on as statements of definitive fact. Descriptions of property are not warranties and that lot is sold “as is”. All goods are sold with all faults and imperfections and errors of description. Illustrations in catalogues are for identification only. It is strongly recommended that prospective buyers inspect and seek any independent expert advice to satisfy you as to authorship, attribution, authenticity, genuineness, origin, date, age, provenance or condition of lot. Registration If you are planning to participate in the auction, you will need to register with us at the registration desk, to complete a bidder registration form and to receive a bidding number to identify you if you are a successful bidder. Registration can be made during the viewing period or 30 minutes prior to the sell.
THE AUCTION

The auctioneer will accept bids from those present in the saleroom or absentee bidders participating by telephone or by written bid left with HERITAGE in advance. HERITAGE FINE ART AUCTION
Theo Meier Born in 1908 in Basle Switzerland, He studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Basel and Academies of Art in Berlin and Dresden. In 1936 he settled in Bali for 20 years then moved to Thailand in 1961. His works have been the collection of former President Soekarno, the Museum Neka in Bali, the Agung Rai Fine Arts Gallery in Bali, and the Kunstmuseum in Basel, Switzerland. Meier, like the city in which he grew up, was fortunate to avoid the hardships of war which quickly overtook much of Europe. Following in his father’s footsteps, he underwent a commercial apprenticeship. At the same time, he attended the Basle School of Art, and enjoyed late night discussions with the local painters, an experience which proved fertile to the young painter. From Switzerland to the South Pacific, from Bali to Thailand, Theo Meier’s life was as varied and exotic as his artistic output, his character as colourful as the oils with which he painted. Theo Meier’s paintings have achieved worldwide recognition for their technical excellence, and artistic integrity. He concerned very closely in Balinese people and tradition. He loved painting the Balinese women, who in contrast to the Polynesian women “were only too happy to undress”. Nudes were his most favorite subjects, although landscapes and flowers also deeply inspired him. In Bali, Theo Meier found what was his dream after all these formative years: Returning to simplicity, purity, and nature - having “Rousseau” in the back of his head. Besides, the ritual songs and dances of Bali inspired him to even further heights. 023

Basoeki Abdullah Born in Solo, January 27, 1915, he is the second son of Abdullah Soerjosoebroto, a prominent landscape painter. He studied at the Academia van Beeldende Kunsten in The Hague, the Netherlands. Basoeki Abdullah started painting since he was 5 years old in simple drawing, and at 10 he traveled to Surabaya and Bali where he started portrait painting. During 1933, he held his first exhibition in Bandung. He brought his painting to RMP. Sosrokartono, RA. Kartini’s brother, who was very impressed on Basoeki’s painting. Sosrokartono and Prince of Mangkunegoro VII became the person who greatly supported his painting career until Basoeki become a famous painter. During that time he continued his study at Academia van Beeldende Kunsten in the Hague, the Netherlands. Basoeki Abdullah is one of the most prominent Indonesian maestros in portrait paintings. The late artist was well-known for his realistic paintings. Besides painting of portraits of beautiful women, he is also noted for his natural beauty and sensuous landscape, as well as paintings of scenes from legends that are also tempered with the same lyrical and overly sensual treatment. Basoeki likes to paint anything beautiful. Flamboyant flowers, women, landscapes, flora and fauna, to the leading figures painted very nicely. He often went to places for field trip, observing object for his painting and put it into sketch. His ability to depict nature makes all the objects seemed to be dramatic, alive and more beautiful in colors than the actual objects.

Ugo Untoro Born in 1970, graduate of Indonesian Institute of Arts, Yogyakarta. He was known as one of the first and probably the best of art doll-makers, the usually sulky Javanese rose from haphazard notice ability to fixed nationwide prominence with his rag sculptural works and oil on canvas paintings. His work is deep, original, and fun; sometimes bordering on being lyrical, sometimes unmistakably poetic -- that’s how Ugo’s drawings, sketches, oil on canvas paintings, dolls and stuff and ideas in general have commonly been viewed. Recently Ugo Untoro freer in creating whatever his adrenaline finds fit -- the consequence of yesteryears’ hard work. He is now one of the relatively successful younger artists since last century. As an individual artist who is looking for meaning through imagery symbolism, Ugo’s scratchy paint shows his indeterminate sign and poetic upon his self consciousness. His rough scratches never recognized anything nor reach into form perfections. His horizontal lines sometimes go beyond his conscious and offer not only form but also meaningful message. Dipo Andy Dipo works are considered belongs to Andy Warhol’s pop art style that focused the attention in imaging object. The differences are seen in Dipo’s painting that uses acrylic on canvas medium, while Warhol uses graphic technique. Dipo uses modern technology in creating his painting that he captured from digital photo then develop them through computer design graphic effect. Under the influence of pop art, he focuses his attention on the strength of mass culture in the lives of contemporary people. He tends to work in series, using modern technology in creating his painting that he captured from digital photo then develop them through computer design graphic effect. Dipo Andy reintroduces famous figures like the pop star Paris Hilton, Madonna, Mother Theresa, and Frida Kahlo, John Lennon, Che Quevera, Bill Gates, etc. Such figures appear with additional graphic that are neatly and dynamically arranged to result in more attractive imageries. Graphic elements are appropriated by manipulating them using computer software. It is as if Dipo re-appropriated technological images by transferring them to paintings. Viewing through the computer medium, forces us to repeat the question about the meaning of genius and the like. But Dipo’s work could perhaps lead us to thinking that anyway technology was invented by human beings for the life of the next human beings. His images are shape by thin lines of nuanced colors to produce portraits out of emphatic lines of different colors. Then he assigned numbers or barcodes. This gives us the impression that Dipo has interest in the issues of industry, technology and the cultural values involved.

S. Sudjojono Sudjojono was a prolific artist and writer. His artistic oeuvre covers a wide spectrum, from paintings, sketches, drawings, public art and reliefs as well as ceramic works. His style and artistic preoccupation were also diverse, from his early and monumental works, which significantly reflect on the true spirit of Indonesia and the people during the war and their struggle against independence; to landscapes; still-lifes; portraits and renditions of his more personal life and family at later years. S. Sudjojono paintings often derived from his fantasy and memory he personally experienced. He often put joyful humor as a cloak over his painting. It’s an image that sometimes gets into his works because humor was always passing by his life. Because of his sense of humor, his works tends to trigger a smile or laughter if not poetic, sentimental, emotional or heroic. His works often come to us in caricature spirit. He used a combination of fantasy and memory to create his surrealistic landscapes. Sometimes, he incorporated elements derived from places that he had seen in books or actually visited. S. Sudjojono paintings have a typical harsh and wild strokes as if the paint has been poured directly onto canvas. His observation of his surroundings seemed spontaneous, as though they were snapshots of views that appealed to him.

Agus Suwage Born in Purworejo, 1959. He performed his solo exhibitions in H Block Gallery, QUT, Brisbane, Australia (1996), Cemeti Contemporary Art Gallery, Yogyakarta (1998), Gen Gallery & Public Center Koshigaya, Saitama, Japan (2000), and Nadi Gallery, Jakarta (2001, 2002). He joined several group exhibitions in Indonesia and overseas, Jakarta Art and Design Expo, Jakarta (1992), Art Gallery Conink, the Netherlands (1993), Cheju PreBiennale, South Korea (1995), Phillip Morris ASEAN Art Award, National Gallery, Bangkok, Thailand (1996), Tachikawa International Art Festival (1999), Museo de la Cuida de Mexico, Museum of Mexico (2000), Circle Point Gallery, Washington DC, USA (2002), etc. Agus Suwage is first and foremost a graphic designer who has had 10-years experience with commercial art before he ventured into his current profession as an artist. In mid 1995, he borrowed the artistic mode of the German Anselm Keifer and the British Francis Bacon. Later, he tried to develop his own style starting to study with his own body and face in various poses and expression in realistic rendering as his means to convey socio-cultural issues in cynical, ironical and parody atmospheres. Suwage’s artistic explorations have as the basic photographic images that he develops with his sensitiveness and manual skills in drawing, adding support from digital manipulation, to produce images. His works illustrate how the constructed image of Western avant-garde art has been inspirational, through “museum without walls”, to the culture of the world’s modern art. Suwage’s mode of appropriation is by borrowing iconic imageries as his reference, to serve the metaphors for values actively working between love and hate, amazement and derision at once, in parodying, and so on.

Agung Mangu Putra Born in 1963 at Sangeh, Central Bali, Mangu Putra was trained in Yogyakarta at Indonesia’s premier art school, Institute Seni Indonesia (originally ASRI, the Akademi Seni Rupa Indonesia). He majored in Design and Visual Communications and worked as a graphic designer until 1997 when he began to pursue career in the Fine Arts. This exciting and very talented artist has participated in a number of group and solo exhibitions throughout Indonesia as well as internationally in Singapore, China, South Korea, Australia, and the United Kingdom. He received awards as the Best in Design Arts (during the 4th and 6th anniversary of ISI, as the finalist of Philip Morris Award in 1994 and Indofood Art Award 2002, Second Place, Jakarta. Mangu Putra’s works arise from intense contact with the world as a conscious expression of his main creative orientation. Representations of natural phenomena, along with the inner pulse of life, form the main stream of his search. The natural world, such as mountains and coasts, are depicted as identifiable objects. Some of his works with abstract designs imply natural images, such as the character of water and the texture and colours of earth or stone. Mangu seems to put nature as an endless source of his inspiration. The works he produces are from historical explorations depict a dialogue between his thoughts and feelings towards what he read and observed during his experiment. His paintings are not meant to inform, but rather to share his feelings and thoughts through art. He observed the historical events through photographs which later he reimagined those events and translated to his canvas.
