CONDITION OF BUSINESS The conditions of business set up below are information guidance for prospective buyer and seller with any enquiries relating to buying or selling at the auction. We encourage you to read them wisely and thoroughly.
THE BUYER
Estimated Price Estimated price is the price range, which reflects the opinion of our specialist for the price expected to offer at the auction. This should not be relied on as a statement that this price is either at which the lot will sell or its value for any other purpose. Estimated prices are based upon prices recently paid at auction, and the condition of the artworks including the quality, rarity and history of ownership (provenance). Reserve Price The reserve is the confidential minimum price the seller is willing to accept and below which a lot not be sold. Buyer’s Premium Buyers are reminded that the price to be paid will be the sum of the final bid price plus the buyer’s premium. The rate of buyer’s premium for each lot is 22 % (twenty two percent) of the hammer price.
BEFORE THE AUCTION
Viewing Pre-sale viewings are strongly recommended for prospective buyers in order to examine the artworks thoroughly. Pre-sale viewing is open for the public at no charge and usually displayed for 2 (two) days prior to the sale. Condition Reports Condition reports are available upon request. All goods are sold with all faults and imperfections and errors of description. Illustrations in catalogues are for identification only. It is strongly recommended that prospective buyers inspect and seek any independent expert advice to satisfy you as to authorship, attribution, authenticity, genuineness, origin, date, age, provenance or condition of lot. Gerard Pieter Adolfs was born on 2 January 1898 in Semarang, Central Java. He spent his youth in Java and received at home his first artistic inspirations. His father, Gerardus Cornelis Adolfs, was an architect and a versatile amateur (painter, photographer, piano and violin player as well as a pole vaulter). Adolfs studied architecture in Amsterdam. After graduating, he was drawn back to Java, were he designed houses in Yogyakarta, Solo and Surabaya. But soon he swapped the drawing pen for the dry-point, pencil and brush and from then on dedicated his whole life to painting. He was already well-known as a talented advertising illustrator, when in 1924 he was first introduced to the public of Yogyakarta as a painter, water-colourist and graphic artist. Each year Adolfs travelled for a few months, leaving his family in Surabaya. He had studios in Florence, Rome, Vienna, Budapest, Prag and (together with his Japanese friend Fujita) in Paris and exhibited his works of art internationally (Netherlands Indies, Japan, Singapore, USA, England, Holland, Sweden, Norway, France, Switzerland) The main subjects of his work were scenes of Java, Bali, Japan and of North Africa (market sceneries, cock-fights, landscapes and townscapes) In 1940 shortly before the occupation of Holland - Adolfs came back to Europe and settled in Amsterdam. On 22 February 1944, during an exhibition at the Kunstzaal Pollmann, the largest part of Adolfs‘ paintings was destroyed by the bombardment of Nijmegen. But Adolfs kept on working. He wrote and illustrated a book about his memories of Surabaya and exhibited in a lot of well-known galleries. He lived mostly in Amsterdam - interrupted by longer stays in Scandinavia, France, Spain, Italy and North Africa. In 1967 he retired to a small village in South-Holland. On 1 February 1968, G.P. Adolfs died in s’Hertogenbosch - Holland.

Soedibio was born in Madiun, East Java 1912. In 1940, he became a member of the first Indonesian Painters Organization (PERSAGI) where he met with other prominent artists such as S. Sudjojono, Affandi, Basuki Resobowo, Trisno Soemardjo, Agus Djaya, Otto Djaya and many others. During the revolution time, together with S. Sudjojono and Trisno Soemardjo he founded the Young Indonesian Artist Organization (Seniman Indonesia Muda) in 1946. During his career as an artist, he actively participated in several exhibitions from 1950s to the 1970s. Soedibio’s art was considered as a multi-style work since it combined different kinds of style such as abstract, decorative, realistic or even surrealistic one. Though multi style, people remembered him as a painter that had a strong tendency in decorative style. Most of his works centered on the Javanese tradition such as folk tales, myth legend, puppet (wayang) stories, and daily life. As a result many of his paintings appear to be narratives with strong and bright colour.

Sudjojono regularly exhibited his works in major Indonesian cities like Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Denpasar, and Bandung before his death in 1985.

In his revolutionary theme he represented not only as the struggling action but he was more to present the memories of the past that illustrate the drama and romance of the time.

Anton Huang Anton Kustia Widjaja (Anton Hwang) (1935-1984; Bandung, West Java), better known as Anton H, studied under artists Kartono Yudokusumo (1924-1957) and Barli Sasmitawinata (born in 1921) in Bandung, West Java. He had performed several exhibitions: Lyngby Kunstforening (Copenhagen, Denmark, 1975), Holstebro Kunstmuseum (Denmark, 1975), Gallerie im Western (Stuttgart, Germany, 1977), Galerie Inart (Amsterdam, Holland, 1977), Eas-West Center (Honolulu, Hawaii, 1988), Festival of Indonesia (U.S.A., 1990-1992), Singapore Art Museum (1994), Centre For Strategic and International Studies (Jakarta, Indonesia, 1996), Indonesia-Japan Friendship Festival (Morioka, Tokyo, 1997). In 1969 he moved to Bali where he developed strong contacts with Western artists on the island. Anton’s decorative works are rich in colour and design. His figures of Balinese dancers in particular are stylized into patters which emphasize their dynamic movements. His paintings sometimes look like mosaic and featuring Balinese arts. He had produced painting using themes of landscape and figures. Most of his paintings revealed Balinese culture. His decorative quality was greatly influenced from his teacher, Kartono Yudhokusumo.

The works of painter Jang Cheol-Seok contain the world’s history. His works is a hyperrealistic series that have a lyrical feelings. Jang’s works feature newspapers from around the world as ingredients, and make a bouquet by choosing flowers that match the daily news and stories. If you buy flowers from a flower shop, the more splendid packaging detracts from the beauty of the flower. Jang’s flowers are made of newspaper to maximize the splendor of the flowers. But look close and see if you can read an article in a paper that’s more beautiful than flowers - It has humanity, and it has love and happiness, culture, art, and world history. Look at the audience! At first people think the flower is the main theme and later they spend more time to look at it and notice that main charractor of painting is the articles in the newspaper that was wrapping flowers. The theme of the works is newspaper articles. Jang’s work has a historicality. Over time, Jang’s paintings will filled with history around the world. I would like to pay attention to the future work of painter Jang Cheol-seok, who records the world’s history in a lyrical language on the canvas.

Affandi Affandi was taught at the Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts in Yogyakarta in early 1955. He received a scholarship from the U.S. government to study arts education in 1957, after participating in International exhibitions in Brazil and Italy. He was made an Honorary Professor of Painting by Ohio State University, and in 1974 was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Singapore. He also received the Peace Award from the Dag Hammarskjoeld Foundation in 1977, and the title of Grand Maestro in Florence, Italy. Affandi was passionate about his country and a large proportion of his works concern his feelings about the land and its people. Though Affandi only painted what he observed and never approached his works from any kind of philosophical or analytical starting point, he was particularly fond of Bali and Javanese culture. The cockfighting is one of the many recurring themes of the artist and yet the unique personality of the sitter never fails to captive the viewers. Very often, despite the artist’s apparent focus on the main subject which is the fight of the animals, Affandi is very fond of creating a sense of spontaneity by adding idiosyncratic details such as the feet of the onlooker, or the drinking spectator at the scene. By doing this, he creates a sense of immediacy equivalent to that of a snapshot and yet capturing the last emotion and personality for eternity. A sense of festivity is also conveyed, as the joyous crowd is clearly drinking to the occasion whilst the fighting animal are entangled in a fury of violence that is conveyed, as the joyous crown is clearly drinking to the occasions whilst the fighting animal area entangled in a fury of violent that is conjured by repeat, swirling stokes in many colors

Hendra Gunawan Hendra Gunawan painted some of his surreal, lively, and emotional work during his imprisonment at Kebun Waru in Bandung from 1965 to 1978. His works captured the life of common people while also conveying a unique, expressionistic, and deeply personal vision of the reality he experienced. His paintings become highly original, modern, simple, and totally Indonesian with its expressions by observing Java’s grand landscapes and natural history. Hendra’s work may thus be seen as illustration of a new mythology. The stylized figures, landscapes features and the decorative approach to color are perhaps influenced by Javanese illustration and design. The underwater world is likely one of the most astonishing and fascinating of Hendra’s works in realistic painting. The subject seems apparently to be a conflict with the artist’s style, themes, and artistic concerns. This painting, Ikan Laut, was painted in 1973, and reflects one of Hendra’s favorite subjects of rich seas. Hendra has clearly created a scheme of expressionistic colors based on the actual hues of the ocean. The link between his distinctive palette and aquatic colors become even more apparent. He used brilliant colors for the ocean textures and character of the fishes.

Auke Cornelis Sonnega An artist’s quest to find inspiration and spiritual contentment can take him on a long voyage far away from home. Such was the journey for Dutch artist Auke Cornelis Sonnega. Born in Leeuwarden and educated at the Kunstnijverheidsschool in Amsterdam (School of Arts and Crafts), Sonnega first set foot on Indonesian soil when he arrived in Batavia in 1935. He did his paintings in Parapat and Medan, North Sumatra, and Bali. He moved to Bali, which became a great source of inspiration for his painting. After the war settled in Ubud in fellow artist Bonnet’s old studio in Puri Kaleran and dedicated himself solely to painting. His style is fresh and unique, clearly influenced by his designer training and background. It is very influenced by Art Deco and often graphic, however, his larger canvases often transcend these limitations and can even be thought to have a mystical impact. He also made many portraits, usually of doe eyed young men (he was in the words of a long time Ubud expatriate euphemism a member of the “club”). These are very stylized and use a brightpalate with strong outlining of his subjects. Sonnega, like Bonnet, stayed in Bali until 1957 when he was forced to leave by the Indonesia authorities in the era of Confrontation. The painting becomes all the more poignant when this separation is considered – the immortalization of a reality that was to him a fulfillment of a dream. He returned to Holland in 1959 and died in Den Haag in 1963.

Lee Man Fong Lee Man Fong was born in Canton, China, 1913. He arrived at Singapore at young age then later moved to Jakarta. He showed great artistic talent from a young age. He participated in the Association’s First Art Exhibition invited by the head of the Dutch East Indies Associations (1931). Lee Man Fong was a successful commercial artist before becoming a full time artist in 1941. His successful exhibitions in Bandung and Jakarta made him a fast growing artist at that time. He received scholarship from the Dutch government to study painting in Holland (1946). In 1952 he returned to Indonesia and gained more accolades as well as acknowledgement. Lee Man Fong officially became the presidential palace’s painter and chief curators of its collection in 1961 and compiled a 5 volume edition of President Sukarno’s art collection. He died in 1988 and remembered as a western vigorous painter and an oriental unique oil painting painter. During 1952, Lee quietly developed his art, which focused on thorough observation of life and nature around him. Lee tried to translate the aesthetic and style of Chinese brush painting into oil on canvas. Considering the differences in texture and consistency between ink and oil, Lee tried to direct the effect of an ink brush with his strokes, which is not a simple act. A large part of these works featured animals, such as the chicken, doves, goldfish, storks, and gibbons. Doves has become Lee Man Fong’s beloved and sought after works in spite of Goldfishes and other animals such as horses, cockatoos, tigers and dogs. Lee Man Fong’s paintings of Doves are especially noteworthy. Since some forty years ago, his animal themes had made a far reaching accomplishment and recently have been eagerly sought after in Europe and America. A testimony to his mastery of technique and realization of theme, this painting depicts the world of the doves as peaceful and calm, but at the same time dynamic. The doves in pairs symbolize a good match, which may be further extended to mean “peaceful coexistence.” 089

Roedyat Martadiredja Roedyat always painted his subject from his personal exploration and examination. Even when using subjects that he often painted, he always felt that he had to see and inspect them each time. The artist was strong in completely analyzing the objects before him. The objects are no longer as physical representations or repetitive illustrations. Instead they become metaphors of the self. The representation of woman figure in the foreground, which somewhat expressionless face, perhaps only treated as a metaphor to describe the landscape of city scene in the background. The presentation of trees is more stylized and abstracted to the point of being decorative. The combination of the unusual green and blue color is quite actually typical of the artist’s painting.

Popo Iskandar Born in Garut, December 17, 1927. Popo Iskandar started painting in 1944. He graduated from the University of Indonesia and Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). Besides as a painter he is also an art observer and writer. In 1980 he received art award from Indonesian Government. He has participated in many exhibitions in Indonesia as well as overseas. His works were mostly on animal such as chicken, cat, and tiger. Repetitive theme of cats, chickens and leopards probably has become Popo Iskandar’s main contemplation in reflecting the essence of cats, nudity or even mystery of nature. There are hundreds of Popo’s paintings in which the object is a cat. He has been interested in painting cats since the early 60’s. The source of his idea of cats is not the form of the cat, but rather its involvement in various situations and conditions which stimulate his ideas and imaginations. In painting a cat, he feels that he doesn’t only present it physically, but that he tries to express the meaning and the impression of the cat’s appearance for him. So, a cat for him is a totality of inspired understanding, an integrated understanding of music and poetry. “I am an expressionist in a way that I am looking for the essence of fife phenomena. In painting cats, for instance, I feel it is not sufficient to only display their physical features, but I try really hard to reveal what impression, meaning, and appearance the cat opens up me. I see cats not only with my eyes, but also with my heart. It is the entirety of a cat that I appreciate with my whole existence. The end product of my painting should be able to project not only a physical impact but also, more ultimately, what is implied in it, so that dialogue and contemplation will be made possible.” (Rupakata, Art and Thoughts of Popo Iskandar, pg. 268)

Hendra Gunawan Born in Bandung, 1918. He taught at the Indonesian Fine Art Academy (ASRI), Yogyakarta in 1957. He took part in founding the Front Seniman (Artists Front) in Bandung, and Pelukis Rakyat (People’s Artists) in Yogyakarta. He also established the art club Pusaka Sunda together with Barli, Obon and some other friends. He is undoubtedly one of the Indonesia’s greatest pioneers of modern art and was considered to be one of the best and most versatile painters in Indonesia. He died in Bali 1983. Hendra Gunawan created paintings conveying his great feelings and deepest emotions for his country and people. He inspired his paintings with sympathy, compassion, and affection about common people. Hendra’s stylistic figures and landscapes are perhaps influenced by his deep knowledge of rich signs and symbols of Javanese culture. Java’s monumental landscapes illustrated in decorative approach of color are also relates to the deeper level of traditional artistic expression in Indonesia. Hendra’s people are never passive victims of their faith; they are always depicted as active subjects. Many of his paintings depict the lives of fish seller, fruit seller, and also chicken seller. The present lot was one of the Hendra’s paintings that described the theme of the common people’s daily life. He explored their activity, capturing them movingly on canvas in his inimitable style. The deepest emotion about the struggle of common people’s life, made Hendra keep presenting people in this landscape painting even in small and tiny form. He used the natural objects such as huge tree, sandy beach and blue sea as background to his main subject, like illustrated in the present lot.

Srihadi Soedarsono Born in Solo, December 4, 1931. In 1958 he studied fine arts at the Institute of Technology Bandung and the Ohio State University, United States (1960 – 1962). His works has been exhibited in Indonesia, the United States, Australia and Brazil. He received cultural awards from both the Indonesian government (1971) and Australian (1973). In 1978 and 1987, he received the highest award in the Biennial Exhibition in Jakarta. Srihadi is currently a senior lecturer in painting and drawing at the Jakarta Institute of Arts and the Bandung Institute of Technology. The dance is one of Srihadi’s favorite themes. In his paintings of dancers he continues to paint female dancers in the same upright pose that has used in the past. His dance work consist of series of dancers, even so, for Srihadi, each dance has its own particular mood, the gist of which he attempts to capture in his painting. At the same time, dance also offers a panorama of human life in general: it shows the dynamic union between the everyday world of material reality and the world beyond perception, the realm of the material. The merging of spiritual and physical control obtained in dance obviously appeals to the philosophical Srihadi. Some of his figurative paintings, especially the dancers, look deceptively similar, and that the figures have become stereotypes, but one should try to appreciate and study the details and minimal variations. Srihadi pays particular attention to the characteristic of the dancer and the artistic form of the dance. Every dance has its language or vocabulary of movement and type of costume, all of which imbued with philosophical meaning. Srihadi gives us many variants in this new approach to the depiction of the dance. When he first started to focus on the idea of movement, he did so by paying with the parallelism of gestures and by emphasizing the realistic aspect of the dancer’s bodies. Color was then relatively secondary. By the early 1990’s rhythm had taken a life of its own, as shown by the vibrant dynamism of the dancer. In painting the present lot, the dancers’ eyes remain transfixed even as their body movements are transformed into a feast of glittering color. Even so, and however much the costumes of the dancers drift rhythmically over the canvas surface, it is in fact the artist’s working of this background that embodies the idea of movement.

ABDUL AZIZ
(Purwokerto, 1928 - Bali, 2002) Nude, 1975 Oil on canvas: 86 x 58 cm Signed and dated, upper right: Abdul Aziz, Bali.1975 Provenance: Private collection, Jakarta RP 100.000.000 - 150.000.000 USD 7.142 - 10.713
Abdul Aziz was born in Purwokerto, Central Java, and showed precocious artistic talent from childhood. His first Diploma was in Social Sciences from Gajah Mada University, after which he studied Art at the Indonesian Fine Arts Academy (ASRI) in Yogyakarta. Due to his exceptional talent he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Academia di Belle Arti in Rome in 1958, where he was awarded two Diplomas, in Painting and in Decoration. On his return to Indonesia in 1965 he lectured in Fine Art at Udayana University and established his studio in Ubud Bali. Abdul Aziz is now regarded as one of Indonesia’s greatest artists of the 20th Century. Originally from Central Java but a resident of Bali for the last part of his life, Aziz was widely known and highly sought after for his realistic paintings of village scenes. Aziz’s paintings include beautiful women, depicted singly or in groups, and portraits both painted and sculpted. Yet his oeuvre stands out as more of an individual contribution to Indonesian art history than most, belonging in a class with artists who are continuously referred to as the ‘greats’: those individual artists that Western-trained or influenced art writers found to be the most original and innovative of their time. Aziz came to learn nude painting during his study in in Italy, where he took the life-drawing classes in the Euro-American sense. As an art student in Rome he was faced with one naked model after the other, most of them women. In Aziz nude paintings, there is nothing particularly sensual about the image. The painting looks like a study of naked human being, who happens to be female, by an artist who is exploring unusual angles and surface-toners rather than painting something which excites his subliminal or conscious desires. He presented the woman as a human being of the female species who has a lovely, beauty, natural thing of the human body. HERITAGE FINE ART AUCTION

Affandi The Indonesian community in Calcutta India was not much in number during the 1940s. At that time the community almost entirely consists of students or trainees who receive scholarships from the Indian government. Among the students there was Affandi, a famous revolutionary painter and creator of a new painting style in Indonesia. Former students in Calcutta have gained success in their respective careers. Affandi was awarded a scholarship to study at the cultural college in Santiniketan, where the late great author Sir Rabindranath Tagore lived. Examining the great talent that Affandi had, the college become worried about the influence of Affandi’s distinctive style, which was in contrast to the origin forms of traditional Hindu art. Therefore, in order to lessen the impact, they put great endeavored to send Affandi to different places which of course accidentally very useful to Affandi. Before he left from Calcuta, he gave two paintings to the present owner formerly the ambassador of India at that time. One was his self-portrait when Affandi was a teenager – painted in a classic style and the other one was rather large painting showing beach scenery where the fishermen were busy fixing the nets. Several sailboats were washed ashore. Blue sky with yellowish colors, while the sea birds hovering in the air. The atmosphere on the beach looked rather gloomy, as if the storm was starting to blow. This painting showed a typical Affandi’s character that present the strong lines of his wild finger strokes and vibrant colors. Two months after Affandi’s living from India, in Calcutta, there was paintings exhibition from Indian painters from Benggal. Apparently there were some paintings that show the influence of Affandi’s character in style and technique. This perhaps become great concerns in Santiniketan. They could not prevent Affandi’s influence, even though they always find a way to keep Affandi in distance from other students at the college. Thus this painting become an important evidence of Affandi’s great influence in India.
