CONDITION OF BUSINESS The conditions of business set up below are information guidance for prospective buyer and seller with any enquiries relating to buying or selling at the auction. We encourage you to read them wisely and thoroughly.
THE BUYER
Estimated Price Estimated price is the price range, which reflects the opinion of our specialist for the price expected to offer at the auction. This should not be relied on as a statement that this price is either at which the lot will sell or its value for any other purpose. Estimated prices are based upon prices recently paid at auction, and the condition of the artworks including the quality, rarity and history of ownership (provenance). Reserve Price The reserve is the confidential minimum price the seller is willing to accept and below which a lot not be sold. Buyer’s Premium Buyers are reminded that the price to be paid will be the sum of the final bid price plus the buyer’s premium. The rate of buyer’s premium for each lot is 22 % (twenty two percent) of the hammer price.
BEFORE THE AUCTION

Pre-sale viewing is open for the public at no charge and usually displayed for 2 (two) days prior to the sale. Condition Reports Condition reports are available upon request. Leo Eland Eland was born in Salatiga on Java in 1884. Leo Eland is the widest-known and most characteristic exponent of the “Beauteous Indies” – style. He was largely self-taught and was advised by the painter C. L. Dake Jr. Between 1920 and 1929 he moved to the Netherlands and worked in The Hague. Leo Elands oeuvre consists mainly colored, smooth painted Indonesian landscapes, Majestic mountains, palm trees, a rural settlement and agricultural scene, also described some figures, coastal view and market scenes. He produced among others, a large number of dioramas and panoramas paintings for Colonial exhibitions. It is known that he went along plantations in Indonesia where he offered the owners to paint it. In the market scenes, Eland’s painting employs focal distance to reduce the villagers in the picture to small figures whose individually features are indistinct and whose exertions are all but invisible. Distant peasant figures often appeared as iconic types of Indonesian completed with huge trees on the surroundings.

POPO ISKANDAR
(Garut, 1927 – Bandung, 2000) Dua Macan dan Bulan, 1997 Oil on canvas: 92 x 124 cm Signed and dated, lower left: Popo 97 RP 200.000.000 - 300.000.000 USD 14,810 - 22,220
Born in Garut, December 17, 1927. Popo Iskandar started painting in 1944. He graduated from the University of Indonesia and Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). Besides as a painter he is also an art observer and writer. In 1980 he received art award from Indonesian Government. He has participated in many exhibitions in Indonesia as well as overseas. His works were mostly on animal such as chicken, cat, and tiger. Popo Iskandar started painting using cats object in the early 1960s which then developed into leopards in early 1980s. Repetitive theme of cats, chickens and leopards probably has become Popo Iskandar’s main contemplation in reflecting the essence of cats, nudity or even mystery of nature. The source of his idea of cats is not the form of the cat, but rather its involvement in various situations and conditions which stimulate his ideas and imaginations. In painting a cat, he feels that he doesn’t only present it physically, but that he tries to express the meaning and the impression of the cat’s appearance for him. So, a cat for him is a totality of inspired understanding, an integrated understanding of music and poetry. Popo’s leopards strongly express smooth line as if the flow of the music. As in cats, leopards figure often shown alone or in groups. Therefore, we often see a leopard’s or cat’s face with many bodies. The moon at the background can be a symbolic shape that was not reflects the actual mean (moon, balloon or sun), but only as a circle of compositor element. The circle often used to give strong impression that surrounds the object mystery or only as the rhyme balancing. But, sometimes it was only like a dot in a sentence, as idea synchronizing.

(b. Kutoarjo, Indonesia 1919 – d. Jakarta, Indonesia 2002) Anggrek Liar Di Hutan, 1985 Oil on canvas: 145 x 145 cm Signed and dated, lower right: Widayat ‘85 Signed, titled and dated on the reverse Provenace: Private collection Jakarta RP 380.000.000 - 450.000.000 USD 28,150 - 33,330
Widayat was born in Kutoarjo (Central Java, 1919) in the colonial era. After some military training, he took the apprentice study at the Indonesia Art Academy Yogyakarta under painters Hendra Gunawan, Sudarso, Trubus, and Kusnadi. Then Widayat met a Bandung Painter, Kartono Yudhokusumo from whom he got direct influence of decorative style in painting. Widayat paints freely, unburdened by anything except that he always attempts at infusing contents, giving significance to his imaginary space by means of symbols and indications. Watching Widayat’s works, we are taken to archaic natures and to the daily life, without perspective, and without criticize for something. We may remark them as beautiful and alluring, crowding our retinas, innocently accepting reality, fascinatingly interpretable, and mystically thrilling the space. Widayat studied at the Indonesian Fine Art Academy (ASRI), Yogyakarta, where hebecame known as a lecturer of the Indonesian Institute of Fine Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta as well as a prominent artist. Since 1950 to 2002, Widayat participated in numerous art exhibitions in Indonesiaas well as internationally, in countries such as Singapore, Thailand, Japan, Hong Kong, Netherlands,Italy, United States, and Australia. Widayat is said to be a maestro after Affandi, as published in the book “Educator and Painter” by ISI Yogyakarta in 1988. Widayat was also a revolutionary artist, and master of gardening and graphics arts. Widayat was the first artist whose exhibition was largely exhibited in the Singapore Art Museum, one of the most important museums in Southeast Asia on September 2007 and it was held for the duration of two months. According to Prof. Soedarso Sp MA, Widayat’s artistic works can be levelled with the works of Henri Rousseau (a France surrealist artist) who has been his great inspiration. Widayat’s works show an immense variety of stories about nature, life, myths, and rituals. They are rich in content, texture, and technique. Widayat’s preference for the simplification and distortion of natural forms had a profound influence on many Indonesian artists. His magic decorative style is a personal visual language mostly derived from folk motifs. He focuses on inner structure rather that outward appearance. The re-petition of basic elements are order with an underlying rhythm to create movement. The artist’s works encompass all of his varied experiences as soldier, student, teacher, and religious family man.

Abdul Aziz was born in Purwokerto, Central Java (1928) and showed precocious artistic talent from childhood. His first Diploma was in Social Sciences from Gajah Mada University, after which he studied Art at the Indonesian Fine Arts Academy (ASRI) in Yogyakarta. Due to his exceptional talent he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Academia di Belle Arti in Rome in 1958, where he was awarded two Diplomas, in Painting and in Decoration. On his return to Indonesia in 1965 he lectured in Fine Art at Udayana University and established his studio in Ubud Bali. Abdul Aziz was very influenced by the 3D movies he saw as a child, always wondering how to recreate the same effect in paintings. In Europe he was impressed by the works of Michelangelo, Caravaggio, and Rembrandt and they inspired him to continue to develop his naturalist, three-dimensional style for which he is now renowned. This style requires complete mastery of anatomy and light effects, and his favourite topics were always life in Bali and the beauty of Balinese women. He brings his painted subjects and his viewers together in the same semi-imaginary, semi-real space. HERITAGE FINE ART AUCTION

Lee Man Fong Lee Man Fong was born in Canton, China, 1913. He arrived at Singapore at young age then later moved to Jakarta. He has shown great artistic talent since young. He participated in the Association’s First Art Exhibition invited by the head of the Dutch East Indies Associations (1931). Lee Man Fong was a successful commercial artist before engaged in full time painting in 1941. His successful exhibitions in Bandung and Jakarta made him a fast growing artist at that time. He received scholarship from the Dutch government to study painting in Holland (1946). In 1952 he returned to Indonesia and gained more credits as well as acknowledgement. He was officially become a presidential palace’s painter and chief curators of its collection in 1961 and compiled a 5 volume edition of President Sukarno’s art collection. He died in 1988 and remembered as a western vigorous painter and an oriental unique oil painting painter. Lee Man Fong was one of a rare artist who received honor by critics and collectors across Asia. As an Oriental artist, Lee has renewed and transformed Western oil painting by imbuing it with the essence of Chinese ink painting, achieving a mutual identity between subject and object, at the same time vastly opening the restrictions on traditional Chinese painting. In short, he created a unique “Man-fong style”. Doves has become Lee Man Fong’s beloved and sought after works in spite of Goldfishes and other animals such as horses, cockatoos, tigers and dogs. Lee Man Fong’s painting of Doves is noteworthy. Since some forty years ago, his animal themes had made a far reaching accomplishment and recently eagerly sought after in Europe and America. A testimony to his mastery of technique and realization of theme, this painting depicts the world of the doves as peaceful and calm, but at the same time dynamic. The doves in pairs symbolize a good match, which may be further extended to mean “peaceful coexistence.” 039

Auke Cornelis Sonnega An artist’s quest to find inspiration and spiritual contentment can take him on a long voyage far away from home. Such was the journey for Dutch artist Auke Cornelis Sonnega. Born in Leeuwarden and educated at the Kunstnijverheidsschool in Amsterdam (School of Arts and Crafts), Sonnega first set foot on Indonesian soil when he arrived in Batavia in 1935. He did his paintings in Parapat and Medan, North Sumatra, and Bali. He moved to Bali, which became a great source of inspiration for his painting. After the war settled in Ubud in fellow artist Bonnet’s old studio in Puri Kaleran and dedicated himself solely to painting. His style is fresh and unique, clearly influenced by his designer training and background. It is very influenced by Art Deco and often graphic, however, his larger canvases often transcend these limitations and can even be thought to have a mystical impact. He also made many portraits, usually of doe eyed young men (he was in the words of a long time Ubud expatriate euphemism a member of the “club”). These are very stylized and use a brightpalate with strong outlining of his subjects. Sonnega, like Bonnet, stayed in Bali until 1957 when he was forced to leave by the Indonesia authorities in the era of Confrontation. The painting becomes all the more poignant when this separation is considered – the immortalization of a reality that was to him a fulfillment of a dream. He returned to Holland in 1959 and died in Den Haag in 1963. 056

Hendra Gunawan Born in Bandung, 1918. He taught at the Indonesian Fine Art Academy (ASRI), Yogyakarta in 1957. His paintings dating from the late 1950s and the 1960s – believed by many to be the best period in his artistic career – are scarce. He took part in founding the Front Seniman (Artists Front) in Bandung, and Pelukis Rakyat (People’s Artists) in Yogyakarta. He also established the art club Pusaka Sunda together with Barli, Obon and some other friends. He is undoubtedly one of the Indonesia’s greatest pioneers of modern art and was considered to be one of the best and most versatile painters in Indonesia. He died in Bali 1983. There is no doubt that Hendra Gunawan is one of Indonesia’s greatest pioneers of modern art. Using non-traditional, European visual elements, he nevertheless created works which were Indonesian in feeling and in experience. Though Hendra’s art was, from the very beginning focused towards celebrating common people and their struggle that depicts his deep feeling and irony inspiring perspective of life’s most fundamental issue: freedom and hunger, Hendra also love the land and paint some in his several themes. He used the natural painting such as mountain and beach as background to his main subject, like illustrated this present lot. Hendra Gunawan painted some of his surreal, lively and emotional work during his imprisonment at Kebun Waru in Bandung from 1965 to 1978. His works captured the life of common people while also conveying a unique, expressionistic and deeply personal vision of the reality he experienced. His paintings become highly original, modern, simple and totally Indonesian expression by observing the Java’s grand landscapes and natural history. Hendra’s work may thus be seen as illustration of a new mythology. The stylized figures, landscapes features and the decorative approach to color are perhaps influenced by Javanese illustration and design. 50

Srihadi Soedarsono Srihadi’s works centered in the search to the essence of Javanese philosophical value. His work is more spiritual, leading to the intensive self-retrospective towards the mystical union with the divine, especially through the understanding of the nature of the “Presence” (Ada) “sing ana, ana ora, ora sing ana, ana”. The transformation of this focus is translated in the themes which rooted in style and variety. It could be visualized as portraits, horizons, puppets, mountains, Balinese temples, Borobudur, etc. The goal is to achieve a contemplative symbiosis between self and subject, as a vehicle for the unification of self and the Divine. His works are reflected in simpler and full of meditative spirit. Nonetheless to say, Srihadi’s works were an attempt to penetrate the inner experience of “manunggaling kawulo Gusti” the true goal of the Javanese people. His landscapes frequently depict culturally important Javanese sites like Mount Merapi and Borobudur. His Borobudur images portray a sense of serenity and solitude between man and nature. Srihadi’s experimentation on the theme of Borobudur takes a long process of attempting to understand the essence of life and nature. His Borobudur is presented in the abstraction of his personal lyrical expressionistic style. The Borobudur is illustrated as a form of monumental black color. The abstraction achievement is seen through the strong strokes on the wall of the temple combined with the gentle sweep on the sky and earth that present the distinctive spiritual silence. As a concrete statement that religious behavior and attitudes are the highest human values, Borobudur is living proof of the hopes and ideals of mankind. Meanwhile in Srihadi’s Mount Merapi, he uses an intense black background on the mountain which symbolizes the strong soul of the ancestor’s spirit. The white smoke reveals a generous God, while the red lava flowing out of the crater shows the anger power of the soul, an explosion of the strong spirit inside the mountain. The concept often been used as the inspiration of monumental creation in Javanese art and culture.

Ries Mulder (Dutch 1909 – 1937) was a Dutch painter who founded the Bandung School (the Faculty of Fine Art & Design – ITB) in 1947. He developed his own cubist style and has had a great influence on contemporary modern Indonesian painting. The teaching methods were developed by Ries himself During the eleven years that Ries stayed in Indonesia, he continued to work on his specific style. Before the war, he had mainly made figurative and impressionistic paintings, but his work became more and more abstract and the influence of Otto van Rees and Charles Eyck was clearly visible. Georges Braque and Picasso also inspired him. The subjects were stylized into angular geometric shapes, separated by sharp black lines (stained glass). His Bandung period was characterized by the modernist styles of the Ecole de Paris, later the cubist style changed into a strict geometric-abstract arrangement of the canvas. His style was very modern compared to most other Dutch painters in Indonesia. Naturally, his students were influenced by this; until then, the Indonesian artists had mainly painted figuratively, expressionistically or impressionistically. A number of Ries Mulder’s students later became famous artists such as Mochtar Apin, But Muchtar, Ahmad Sadali, Popo Iskandar, Srihadi Soedarsono AD. Pirous and many others. The influence of Ries Mulder on the development of modern Indonesian art has been particularly great. Because of his style and his way of teaching in art history and art appreciation, the young Indonesian artists became acquainted with the West. This style was very modern for the conservative art world of Bandung. The internationally oriented elite of the Dutch and Indonesians could greatly appreciate this work. Bandung wanted to join the international developments in technology and art. In 1954 Ries Mulder had a solo exhibition in the Bandung Art Circle. Ries Mulder died in 1973 in IJsselstein. After his death, a retrospective of his work was held in 1994 in the Stadsmuseum IJsselstein. In 2009, a few of his paintings and some personal details were shown at the exhibition Beyond the Dutch: Indonesia, the Netherlands and the visual arts from 1900 until now in the Centraal Museum in Utrecht.

His painting show breathtaking landscapes, relaxing youths, colourful tropical gardens, glittering seascapes, and quiet temples that evoke a sense of wander. Arie Smit is best known for his paintings of fertile rice fields, vast valley and mountain ranges, temple courtyards and monumental gateways, and festive temple processions of Bali. Arie’s landscapes often go beyond the scenes of nature. Landscape, Hills and Trees is not a mere rendition of the rolling green terrain of the valley. Facades of temple are often shown with human figures in front of them. He uses a simple single vanishing point perspective to depict the temple surrounding. His special characteristics were seen by the use of his tropical rich colour on the object.

Widayat Widayat is a famous painter with “decora-magic” style, which means the works were fully decorated and can produced magical effect. His works are based on his daily life experiences. Such experiences he imparts through the representations of human and animal figures, plants and imaginary beings, characterized by spontaneity and uninterrupted strong lines. Most of his paintings can give magnificent excitement by his ability in creating stylistic forms of trees, birds, fishes, or his favorite animal. The form also gives decorative motif with the use of hard and dark color producing textures and subtle impression.

Srihadi Soedarsono Srihadi is an artist with a deep cultural background. His integrity as a creative artist was formed through his formal education as well as through his life experiences. There are two important aspects in Srihadi’s paintings: first, the artistic value of color composition, and second, the philosophical value that reflects the meaning of life, cultural, and social value. Some of his figurative paintings, especially the dancers, look deceptively similar, and that the figures have become stereotypes, but one should try to appreciate and study the details and minimal variations. Srihadi pays particular attention to the characteristic of the dancer and the artistic form of the dance. Every dance has its language or vocabulary of movement and type of costume, all of which imbued with philosophical meaning. The dancing figures in Srihadi’s painting were characterized with the use of other elements such as mask, fan, mirror, offerings or flowers. In the present lot the figure was posing in elegant style holding a fan in front of her chest. The way she looked directed us to a stage of waiting for something or perhaps just a symbolical meaning of her own self contemplation.

Alit Sembodo Born in Magelang, 1973. He took his formal study at the Indonesia Institute of Fine Art (ISI) Yogyakarta. He has actively participated in several solo and group exhibitions in major cities in Indonesia. His work has been awarded the Pratisara Affandi Adi Karya Pize in 1999. His painting has particular and distinct characteristic of all kinds of figures and scenes. He passed away in Magelang 2003. Yet, his short lifetime has been noted by important works that captured the people’s attention. Some of the works that made in 2000 – 2001 reveal Alit Sembodo keen interest in different theme. As usual for Alit, this painting object gave rise to a sort of serial works. Most of his works demonstrate strong characteristics, narrative and descriptive crowd in all kinds of poses and scenes that filled every corner of the canvas. He never left the canvas empty. The canvas seems full with parade of masses like a colossal theater performance. Perhaps this has become Alit’s concern towards all kinds of social problems amongst the populace. He seems does not merely make social criticism towards the ruling politics, but he only goes to describe the condition in his painting through his own perspective and perception. With his combination of strong drawing techniques and simple colors, Alit’s painting illustrates an image of dramatic atmosphere of the condition.

Gerard Pieter Adolfs Adolfs spent his youth in Java and received at home his first artistic inspirations. His father, Gerardus Cornelis Adolfs, was an architect and a versatile amateur (painter, photographer, piano and violin player as well as a pole vaulter). Adolfs studied architecture in Amsterdam. After graduating, he was drawn back to Java, where he designed houses in Yogyakarta, Surakarta and Surabaya. But soon he swapped the drawing pen for the dry-point, pencil and brush and from then on dedicated his whole life to painting. He was already well known as a talented advertising illustrator, when in 1924 he was first introduced to the public of Yogyakarta as a painter, water-colourist and graphic artist. Each year Adolfs travelled for a few months. He had studios in Florence, Rome, Vienna, Budapest, Prag and - together with his Japanese friend Léonard Tsuguharu Fujita - in Paris and exhibited his works of art internationally (Netherlands Indies, Japan, Singapore, United States, England, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, France, Switzerland). The main subjects of his work were scenes of Java, Bali, Japan and of North Africa (market sceneries, cock-fights, landscapes and townscapes). In 1940 – shortly before the occupation of the Netherlands – Adolfs came back to Europe and settled in Amsterdam. On 22 February 1944, during an exhibition at the Kunstzaal Pollmann, the largest part of Adolfs’ paintings was destroyed by the bombardment of Nijmegen. Adolfs kept on working. He wrote and illustrated a book about his memories of Surabaya and exhibited in many well-known galleries. He lived mostly in Amsterdam - interrupted by longer stays in Scandinavia, France, Spain, Italy and North Africa. In 1967 he retired to a small village in South-Holland. On 1 February 1968, G.P. Adolfs died in ’s-Hertogenbosch, North Brabant.
