CONDITION OF BUSINESS The conditions of business set up below are information guidance for prospective buyer and seller with any enquiries relating to buying or selling at the auction. We encourage you to read them wisely and thoroughly.

THE BUYER

Estimated Price Estimated price is the price range, which reflects the opinion of our specialist for the price expected to offer at the auction. This should not be relied on as a statement that this price is either at which the lot will sell or its value for any other purpose. Estimated prices are based upon prices recently paid at auction, and the condition of the artworks including the quality, rarity and history of ownership (provenance). Reserve Price The reserve is the confidential minimum price the seller is willing to accept and below which a lot not be sold. Buyer’s Premium Buyers are reminded that the price to be paid will be the sum of the final bid price plus the buyer’s premium. The rate of buyer’s premium for each lot is 22 % (twenty two percent) of the hammer price.

BEFORE THE AUCTION

Viewing Pre-sale viewings are strongly recommended for prospective buyers in order to examine the artworks thoroughly. Pre-sale viewing is open for the public at no charge and usually displayed for 2 (two) days prior to the sale. Condition Reports Condition reports are available upon request. They are statements of opinion and should not be relied on as statements of definitive fact. Descriptions of property are not warranties and that lot is sold “as is”. All goods are sold with all faults and imperfections and errors of description. Illustrations in catalogues are for identification only. It is strongly recommended that prospective buyers inspect and seek any independent expert advice to satisfy you as to authorship, attribution, authenticity, genuineness, origin, date, age, provenance or condition of lot. HERITAGE FINE ART AUCTION

Abdul Aziz Abdul Aziz was born in Purwokerto, Central Java, and showed precocious artistic talent from childhood. His first Diploma was in Social Sciences from Gajah Mada University, after which he studied Art at the Indonesian Fine Arts Academy (ASRI) in Yogyakarta. Due to his exceptional talent he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Academia di Belle Arti in Rome in 1958, where he was awarded two Diplomas, in Painting and in Decoration. On his return to Indonesia in 1965 he lectured in Fine Art at Udayana University and established his studio in Ubud Bali. Abdul Aziz is now regarded as one of Indonesia’s greatest artists of the 20th Century. Originally from Central Java but a resident of Bali for the last part of his life, Aziz was widely known and highly sought after for his realistic paintings of village scenes. Aziz’s paintings include beautiful women, depicted singly or in groups, and portraits both painted and sculpted. Yet his oeuvre stands out as more of an individual contribution to Indonesian art history than most, belonging in a class with artists who are continuously referred to as the ‘greats’: those individual artists that Western-trained or influenced art writers found to be the most original and innovative of their time. Aziz came to learn nude painting during his study in in Italy, where he took the life-drawing classes in the Euro-American sense. As an art student in Rome he was faced with one naked model after the other, most of them women. In Aziz nude paintings, there is nothing particularly sensual about the image. The painting looks like a study of naked human being, who happens to be female, by an artist who is exploring unusual angles and surface-toners rather than painting something which excites his subliminal or conscious desires. He presented the woman as a human being of the female species who has a lovely, beauty, natural thing of the human body. 028

Auke Cornelis Sonnega An artist’s quest to find inspiration and spiritual contentment can take him on a long voyage far away from home. Such was the journey for Dutch artist Auke Cornelis Sonnega. Born in Leeuwarden and educated at the Kunstnijverheidsschool in Amsterdam (School of Arts and Crafts), Sonnega first set foot on Indonesian soil when he arrived in Batavia in 1935. He did his paintings in Parapat and Medan, North Sumatra, and Bali. He moved to Bali, which became a great source of inspiration for his painting. After the war settled in Ubud in fellow artist Bonnet’s old studio in Puri Kaleran and dedicated himself solely to painting. His style is fresh and unique, clearly influenced by his designer training and background. It is very influenced by Art Deco and often graphic, however, his larger canvases often transcend these limitations and can even be thought to have a mystical impact. He also made many portraits, usually of doe eyed young men (he was in the words of a long time Ubud expatriate euphemism a member of the “club”). These are very stylized and use a brightpalate with strong outlining of his subjects. Sonnega, like Bonnet, stayed in Bali until 1957 when he was forced to leave by the Indonesia authorities in the era of Confrontation. The painting becomes all the more poignant when this separation is considered – the immortalization of a reality that was to him a fulfillment of a dream. He returned to Holland in 1959 and died in Den Haag in 1963.

Popo Iskandar Popo is well known through his paintings that represent cats including leopard, and rooster in various forms and shapes. In his development as an artist, in fact, he has also created paintings that represent many other objects such as bull, dog, daily life, fish, flower, horse, human figure, (mountainous) landscape, oceanic panorama,(bamboo) trees, still life, and etcetera. The colourful cat and rooster, however, have long been the most important of his visual idioms. Popo created a number of nude themed and figurative paintings as a response to break away from linear cubism since the early 1960s. In 1964 he Intensively studied European and Western art and achieved his individualised style of painting. Popo was involved in the development of synthetical cubism, where he tends to execute the textual approach through analytical deform which could be found in his nude painting series. The figures have been reduced to their basic geometric spheres, cylinders and cones. In his painting of women’s figures, beside being influenced by Modigliani (with eyes as holes as in the figures in Jeihan’s painting), Popo Iskandar had some difficulty in capturing the essence. The figurative form has stimulated and challenged him various artistic and creative possibilities. In Popo figure studies shows his exploration of form and aesthetic language as a way to escape the boring repetition of stereotypes.

Hendra Gunawan Hendra Gunawan painted some of his surreal, lively and emotional work during his imprisonment at Kebun Waru in Bandung from 1965 to 1978. His works captured the life of common people while also conveying a unique, expressionistic and deeply personal vision of the reality he experienced. His paintings become highly original, modern, simple and totally Indonesian expression by observing the Java’s grand landscapes and natural history. Hendra’s work may thus be seen as illustration of a new mythology. The stylized figures, landscapes features and the decorative approach to color are perhaps influenced by Javanese illustration of sign and symbols. Hendra created paintings conveying his great feelings and deepest emotions for his country and people. He inspired his paintings with sympathy, compassion, and affection about common people. Hendra’s people are never passive victims of their faith; they are always depicted as active subjects. Many of his paintings depict the lives of fish seller, fruit seller, chicken seller and vegetable seller. Hendra women are types, not clearly distinguishable individuals, and they are nourishing, nursing, mothering beauties, voluptuous and undulating bodies wrapped in brightly colored cloth. He used exaggerated profiles, with long necks, protruding noses, and large eyes, echoes the stylization of human form found in wayang. Hendra’s people are never passive victims of their faith; they are always depicted as active subjects. He took the daily lives of people subjects for his paintings and captured them movingly on canvas in his inimitable style.

Ahmad Sadali Ahmad Sadali is known for his abstract art and titles that never give away any clues on the content of the painting, such as Gold on Purple Relief, or Gold on a wrinkled plane. Considered the father of Indonesian abstract art, and a teacher at the Bandung Institute of Technology, he exerted a wide influence on his students such as Umi Dachlan. Ahmad Sadali is more known as an artist of abstract art, while AD. Pirous another abstract painter, who has brought Arabic calligraphy to the level of expressive art, has developed a tendency toward the abstract. Sadali was graduated from the Department of Art, Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) in 1953, where he later taught, becoming a Professor in the Art Department in 1972. He received a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation to study at Iowa State University and the New York Art Student's League in USA 1956-1957. He also studied in The Netherlands and Australia in 1977, a Pakistan in 1980. He held his solo exhibition in Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung and Yogyakarta. He also has participated in several group exhibitions such as in Indonesia, China, Japan, Thailand, Philippines, Singapore, India, Vietnam, USA, Switzerland, UK, France, Brazil and Saudi Arabia. He received some Awards including the Anugerah Seni Art Award from the Indonesian Government in 1972 and awards from the Jakarta Arts Council at the Indonesian Painting Biennials in 1974 and 1978. There are several stages within his artistic progress. In his early stage of advancement, his painting showed the influenced of synthetic cubism. This was his major artistic credo in the 1950’s. At the same time, he also made figurative paintings depicted in an emotional way that showed the influence of dominant art discourse. He abandoned the cubistic style in the early 1960’s and produced afterwards abstract painting by deforming landscape paintings. Colors in his canvases previously arranged within geometric pattern were freed. The colors, the pieces, the etched gold tinsel, still remains one direction, a mystery. Something that was unreachable, but very large and powerful. In each of his works he always worshiped the Gods greatness. His paintings are sometimes full of question, because it relies on something that causes people to take them into account. He talked about something vague, something grand and beautiful. But because the technique and the intensity have reached a certain level, so we felt there was honesty in his search, he was so convincing. Sadali take us to the Lord's feet with the fields of rich, colorful and emotionless. He had managed to relate us with the world beyond our reach.
