CONDITION OF BUSINESS The conditions of business set up below are information guidance for prospective buyer and seller with any enquiries relating to buying or selling at the auction. We encourage you to read them wisely and thoroughly.

THE BUYER

Estimated Price Estimated price is the price range, which reflects the opinion of our specialist for the price expected to offer at the auction. This should not be relied on as a statement that this price is either at which the lot will sell or its value for any other purpose. Estimated prices are based upon prices recently paid at auction, and the condition of the artworks including the quality, rarity and history of ownership (provenance). Reserve Price The reserve is the confidential minimum price the seller is willing to accept and below which a lot not be sold. Buyer’s Premium Buyers are reminded that the price to be paid will be the sum of the final bid price plus the buyer’s premium. The rate of buyer’s premium for each lot is 22 % (twenty two percent) of the hammer price.

BEFORE THE AUCTION

Viewing Pre-sale viewings are strongly recommended for prospective buyers in order to examine the artworks thoroughly. Pre-sale viewing is open for the public at no charge and usually displayed for 2 (two) days prior to the sale. Condition Reports Condition reports are available upon request. They are statements of opinion and should not be relied on as statements of definitive fact. Descriptions of property are not warranties and that lot is sold “as is”. All goods are sold with all faults and imperfections and errors of description. Illustrations in catalogues are for identification only. It is strongly recommended that prospective buyers inspect and seek any independent expert advice to satisfy you as to authorship, attribution, authenticity, genuineness, origin, date, age, provenance or condition of lot. Registration If you are planning to participate in the auction, you will need to register with us at the registration desk, to complete a bidder registration form and to receive a bidding number to identify you if you are a successful bidder. ALIMIN TAMIN

(Solok, 1932) Dua Gadis Bali (Two Balinese Girls), 1967 Oil on canvas: 127 x 80 cm Signed and dated, lower left: Alimin, 1967 RP 150.000.000 - 200.000.000 USD 11,540 - 15,380

Alimin began his study in painting under the guidance of S.Sudjojono and Harijadi in SIM (Young Indonesian Artists), Yogyakarta in 1952. In 1954, he moved to Jakarta, where together with Nashar, Wim Nirahua, Mardian, A. Wakidjan, and Alex Wetik, Alimin founded the Matahari Artists Association at Balai Budaya, Jakarta. In 1957, Alimin moved to Bali where he taught painting at the Department of Fine Arts and Architecture, Udayana University, Denpasar. Alimin and Gusti Sholihin co-founded “Kedaton Studio in Denpasar in 1960 and he was the Chairman of CITRA - Indonesian Artists Association in Denpasar, Bali from 1975 to 1978. Alimin has participated in exhibitions in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Bandung, and Bali. A limin was greatly fond of painting themes surrounding Balinese people and its traditions. In the present lot, Dua Gadis Bali, Alimin illustrates two Balinese ladies preparing offerings. One of the most striking things about Bali is the daily profusion of offerings. Offerings are important as they are to give pleasure to the gods and demons. They provide good karma to those who are involved in their preparations. Nearly every village has its own unique forms of offerings and some Balinese even spend all their lives making them. Women mostly, but not exclusively: it depends on type of offering. The work in preparing an offering, itself is an element of worship, and is regarded as part of its content. Here, Alimin present the arrangements of fruits and flowers for the offerings in decorative style. The realistic portrayal of the figures is described in a static scene with detail of clothing and ornaments.

Lee Man Fong Lee Man Fong was one of a rare artist who received honor by critics and collectors across Asia. As an Oriental artist, Lee man Fong has renewed and transformed Western oil painting by imbuing it with the essence of Chinese ink painting, achieving a mutual identity between subject and object, at the same time vastly opening the restrictions on traditional Chinese painting. In short, he created a unique “Man-Fong style”. Besides his great intense in observing the nature especially animal such as gold fish and doves, dancing women or figure paintings were Lee’s most cherished subject. Lee Man Fong, often, made paintings of Balinese subjects. Some of these were clearly based on Willem Hofker’s work. He also did a series of large paintings depicting various activities in Balinese daily life which are remarkable such as the present lot. He was a versatile painter skilled in both western oil painting styles. Man Fong’s portraits are remarkable life-like, fresh and moving and at the same time full of artistic individuality. This resulted from a strict awareness of values and rigorous selectivity. 031

WILLEM GERARD HOFKER (Amsterdam, 1902 – 1981) Ina Levina, 1960

Oil on canvas: 45 x 50 cm Signed, titled and dated, upper area: Ina Levina, WG. Hofker, 1960 RP 280,000,000 - 350,000,000 USD 21,540 - 26,920 Willem Gerard Hofker was born in the Netherlands in 1902. He received a formal art education, encouraged by an amateur artist Father, he attended first the ‘Academy of Fine Arts’ at the Hague followed by the ‘Rijksacademie’ in Amsterdam. A prestigious commission to paint Queen Wilhelmina resulted in a trip to Indonesia in 1938. Inspired by the beauty of the women, the landscape and fascinated by the rituals of Bali in particular, he remained there until 1944. During his sojourn in Ubud, he socialised with the other foreign artists Rudolf Bonnet and Walter Spies who were living and working there at the time. Hofker’s works include many Balinese dancers and typical Balinese village scenes yet this painting is of a Dutch girl. Returning to the Netherlands after the Second World War, Hofker continued to paint for a living. While much of his work was commissioned portraits he would still recreate the beautiful Balinese scenes that he had encountered years earlier. Besides inspired by Balinese women figure, Hofker also painted portraits of his relatives. All are captured in sharply-observed and widely varied attitudes. If no relatives were at hand, Willem would sit before a mirror and draw himself. Hofker left an even larger number of portraits – in various techniques – of his mother, all bearing witness to his great love. In later years his wife Maria was a frequent and very patient subject of portraits in all kinds of techniques. The present lot illustrates one of his objects in portrait paintings. Hofker used a remarkable striking way with the eyes, involving infinite nuances of color and splendid downward illumination. His entire portrait is typified by its especially capable expression, carefully considered compositional unity and subtle color nuances and grey tints in shaded planes. Even the smallest detail is the result of his awareness of the essence of his models.

(Cirebon, 1907 – 1990)) Snow Landscape in Italy, 1972 Oil on canvas: 100 x 130 cm Signed and dated, lower left: Affandi 1972 Provenance: Annonymous sale Sotheby’s Singapore, May 2016 Literature: Affandi “Prix International Dag Hammarskjoeld”, pg. 131 RP 800.000.000 - 1000.000.000 USD 61,540 - 76,920

Born in Cirebon, March 11, 1907. Affandi was considered as the Indonesian Artist par excellent. He was the founder of the Himpunan Pelukis Masyarakat (Community’s Artists Association (1946) and Himpunan Pelukis Rakyat (People’s Artists Association) in 1947, Affandi was committed to creating a new artistic idiom for Indonesia. In the early of 1950s he traveled to India for a grant from Indian Government, he held several one-man shows in several Indian Cities, United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Italy. He received an Indonesian Art Award from the Ministry of Education and Culture (1969), the Dag Hammerskjoeld Prize from Italy (1977) and an Indonesian Government the First Class Merit (1978). His works were exhibited in major exhibitions in Asia, Europe, and the Americas and were also be acquired by major art collectors and institutions all over the world since the 1950s. Affandi prefers capturing his subjects exactly as they are by painting them as they appear in their natural setting. In this, he starts of his use of squeezing paint directly on the canvas, a style that he has used since the late fifties. He not only departs from the use of the brush, but makes use of his palms and fingers to apply the paint on the canvas. Affandi’s work exhibits a distinct rhythm full of emotional intensity. The impact of this emotion is communicated visually depending on the emotional drive of the painter himself. The expressionist painter characteristically has an urgency to simultaneously grab the movement of the moment he wants to describe, along with capturing the textures of the object, a drive that often leads him to work much more passionately compared to the naturalists, the realists, or even the impressionists. In painting the present lot, Affandi directly expressed his pure emotion in the form of strong wild lines dominated with black hues and decorated with the sun. Affandi’s strokes expressed his wild, vicious, and discontentment towards the fixed form.

Lee Man Fong Lee Man Fong was born in Canton, China, 1913. He arrived at Singapore at young age then later moved to Jakarta. He has shown great artistic talent since young. He participated in the Association’s First Art Exhibition invited by the head of the Dutch East Indies Associations (1931). Lee Man Fong was a successful commercial artist before engaged in full time painting in 1941. His successful exhibitions in Bandung and Jakarta made him a fast growing artist at that time. He received scholarship from the Dutch government to study painting in Holland (1946). In 1952 he returned to Indonesia and gained more credits as well as acknowledgement. He was officially become a presidential palace’s painter and chief curators of its collection in 1961 and compiled a 5 volume edition of President Sukarno’s art collection. He died in 1988 and remembered as a western vigorous painter and an oriental unique oil painting painter. In Lee Man Fong paintings, light is of prime importance and the subjects are consistently bathed in a luminous glow as presented in this lot. The background, unlike the flat, void spaces of Chinese paintings, is likewise illuminated by an almost mysterious glow of white sunlight. Therefore the subjects, reflecting the sun’s radiance, seem also to be lit from the back, creating the effect of “glowing silhouettes”. As to the Chinese philosophy, Gold fish is believed that the fish can bring rich and prosperity.

Richard Winkler Richard Winkler was born in Norrkoping, Sweden, 1969. He studied arts at the Nyckelviken School of art which later continued his study at the Beckmans School of Design. He was interested in human body His works have been exhibited in Asia as well as European countries. As one of the foreign artists who visualized Bali, Richard Winkler continues the romantic tradition of painting on the island. Winkler was very interested in the human body and anatomy which he put into canvases in exaggerated figures. In the period of 1994-1995, he traveled to several cities in Europe to deepen his visual arts. In 1997, he moved to Bali and creates paintings inspired by the place. Besides painting human figures, he also interested in painting plants of the tropical forest. Plants in most of his paintings are a direct representation or abstraction of fertility of the real tropical plants and a pattern that enrich and strengthen the views of his works. In the present lot, Winkler put the form of bathing figures appeared in the contrast with the natural vegetation in which the figures were placed. The use of bright color, motif, texture and light technique made a beautiful combination on the painting.

Nashar Born in Pariaman West Sumatra on 30 October 1928. He was known as a painter who always searching for painting techniques not available at the academies. He started to learn painting with S. Sudjojono and Affandi in Jakarta. Therefore he was famous for having this principle of Three-Non: non-preconception, non-academic technique, and non-academic aesthetic. He believed that being a painter and painting was a “way of life”, and often inspired painters from the younger generation to have their own significant character. Nashar works illustrate that art does not only deal or produce beauty. Art also means real life. Nashar cared much about his surroundings which he sometimes painted into a painting. He loved to paint human being and very closed to it. He used to paint poor people as his subject matter since he got inspired by his teacher, Affandi. Nashar work didn’t seem to speak through form but he spoke through color, line and plane. He no longer needed form. He discovered that elements like line, plane and color are respectively complete forms of expressions for his inner experiences. To him that was not only a style but a conviction. This what makes Nashar different from other painters. He goes from canvas to canvas that make single continuity form of flowing life. Nashar died in 1994.

Widayat Born in Kutoarjo, Central Java, 1923. He studied at the Indonesian Fine Art Academy (ASRI), Yogyakarta and Ceramics and Landscape, Nagoya, Japan (1960). He received BKPM award (1953), a cultural award from the Indonesian Government (1972), the Best Biennial Painting, Yogyakarta (1986) and the ASEAN Award, Brunei Darussalam (1993). His works have been shown throughout Indonesia and abroad. He performed his solo exhibitions in Yogyakarta (1983), Jakarta (1985, 1990, 1991, 1992, 2000 and participated in joint exhibition in Japan, Netherlands and United States for KIAS (1990 – 1991). The themes of Widayat’s works during half a century have not shifted much. They are centered on landscapes, flora and fauna, actual daily life, myths legends, and religious – spiritual issues. The same remark goes for his treatment of main object and decorative backgrounds with textures that has already become part of his characteristic features. One of the themes extensively treated by Widayat is flora and fauna. After his trip to Japan, the artist created many cherry blossom trees and animal objects like birds, horses and fishes. Fish seem to be the obsession for Widayat, who explained that his fascination for the creatures started in Japan. He went to deep-sea fishing with friends. The fish had all sort of strange, monstrous forms that appealed to Widayat’s fantasy. The fish is a symbol of good health, just like a proverb says “I feel as healthy as a fish in water.” Another reason for Widayat’s attraction to underwater world might be because he was born under the astrological sign of Pisces, the Fish. People with this sign must have the freedom to swim in all directions, living in the depths of the intuitive world of water.

Willem Gerard Hofker Willem Gerard Hofker was born on 2nd May 1902 in The Hague, the Netherlands, as a son of Gerrit Jan Hofker, public servant with the Postal Services. For a while his father was a coworker of De Nieuwe Gids and befriended members of the Eighties movement. He named his son after the painter Willem Witsen. Willem Hofker firstly attended the Haagse Academie and later, at age 14, attended the Rijksacademie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. He was also educated by Willem Witsen and Isaac Israel who were friends of his father, an amateur artist and writer, member of the literary movement ‘de beweging van Tachtig’. In 1927 Willem Hofker won the 2nd price at the Prix de Rome. In 1930 he married Maria Rueter, also a painter, daughter of Georg Rueter, painter and lector at the Rijksacademie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. He once lived in Bali from 1938 – 1944 together with his wife, Hofker-Reuter. At this moment his Balinese landscapes and dancers are very much in demand. And also internationally the creations from Hofkers Balinese period in the last few years draw much attention. Willem Hofker lived in the Zomerdijkstraat in Amsterdam from 1934 to 1938 and from 1946 to 1967.Willem Gerard Hofker died in Amsterdam on 30th April 1981. Willem Hofker also specialized in crayon drawings of cityscapes of Amsterdam, where he mainly focused on architecture, ‘portraits’ of houses and cities. He enjoyed painting a big panoramic view of the city. His works were undoubted. His color, texture surface, and contrastive control showed his maturity of painting study. De Klokkenhof, bij de Belten, Vorden was painted in Amsterdam 1956. The sun was shining in, felt very warm. The scent of the roses and daffodils in the garden seemed very fresh, such a lovely view from the window.
