Koeboe Sarawan Born in Malang, June 29, 1961. He graduated from Indonesian Academy of Arts in Yogyakarta in 1985. Koeboe Sarawan spent his younger years learning Batik then he started to paint. Koeboe Sarawan’s great asset is his magnificent talent to portray visual reality in detail and realistic manner. He seriously capture the detail form but once he act humorously and critical. His works are represented in more attractive was a way with the exact choices of object. The themes revealed in his paintings were a projection of honesty that attracts viewers to learn more about the painter’s goal through his works. His works are mostly categorized as surrealistic though actually they are more realistic in symbolic way. His ideas are still dominated by his surroundings which represent his social experiences. The painting looks as if it was 3 dimensional, utilizing excellent realism techniques, so every details and perspective of the work seem very realistic. Koeboe’s career journey is comprehended as his life’s journey. He has been drawing since kindergarten. His beloved grandmother, Eyang Soelarmi Jaya Panatas, a loving and nurturing figure has been his painting inspiration especially when she passed away in 1994 at the age 97. His grandmother is regarded as his second mother in Koeboe’s life journey, certainly his first mother is the one who gave birth to him. Koeboe has experienced love and the desire to embrace one another since he was in his mother’s womb. The spirituality of his mother and grandmother was imparted to him. His painting contains certain religion that invites us to approach the spiritual, the inner sanctum. Through his painting he tries to make a dialog between spirits with the grandmother who once stood by him on this world, and who is now heading towards an eternal life. The character he present symbolized the life wisdom, the manifestation in spirit form, the manifestation of the spirit of wisdom that provides Koeboe with the strength to carry out a purposeful, everlasting journey.

Agung Mangu Putra Mangu Putra was born in Sangeh, Bali, on May 11, 1963. He graduated from the faculty of Art and Design at the Indonesian Arts Institute (ISI), Yogyakarta majoring Visual Communication Design (1990). His first exhibition was in Dewata Gallery (1987) at Taman Budaya Denpasar. Being a designer did not satisfy him as an artist then he decided to engage in full time painting in 1998. Since his first solo exhibition in Ubud (1990) his name was considered as valuable painter in Indonesia. He held his solo exhibition at National Gallery, “Teater Rakyat”, Jakarta, 2010; “Silent Word”, Gajah Gallery, Singapore (2008), Mandala, Bidadari, Ubud-Bali (2007), “Belief, Rupa Gallery”, Surabaya (2005),etc. He also joined in several group exhibitions in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Bali and other country. He received awards as the Best in Design Arts (during the 4th and 6th anniversary of ISI, as the finalist of Philip Morris Award in 1994 and Indofood Art Award 2002, Second Place, Jakarta. Mangu seems to put nature as an endless source of his inspiration. The works he produces are from historical explorations depict a dialogue between his thoughts and feelings towards what he read and observed during his experiment. His paintings are not meant to inform, but rather to share his feelings and thoughts through art. He observed the historical events through photographs which later he reimagined those events and translated to his canvas. At the bottom of a lush green river valley lies one of Bali’s oldest and largest ancient monuments - Pura Gunung Kawi - an 11th-century temple and funerary complex in Tampaksiring north east of Ubud in Bali, Indonesia. It comprises 10 rock-cut candi (shrines) that are carved into some 7-metre-high (23 ft) sheltered niches of the sheer cliff face. These funeral monuments are thought to be dedicated to King Anak Wungsu of the Udayana dynasty and his favourite queens. On the east side there are five temples that are dedicated, according to one theory, to King Udayana, his queen Mahendradatta, and their sons Airlanga, Anak Wungsu, and Marakata. The temples on the west side are dedicated, according to the same theory, to the king’s minor queens or concubines. As you wander between monuments, temples, offerings, streams and fountains, you can’t help but feel a certain ancient majesty here. Here, Mangu depicts majestic, timeless and all powerful, yet quietly dormant atmosphere. His feel for colors is always impressive: breathtaking blues for his landscapes, black and whites bonded with a philosophical theme or just translucent colors that captivate the viewers’ attention. 020

Djoko Pekik for the Festival of Indonesia in USA. Since then, he had held numerous solo and group exhibitions in various parts of Indonesia and overseas. “The Art Gallery of Djoko Pekik” is owned by the artist and showcases many of his own collection. Djoko Pekik’s work is unique in the painting world of Indonesia in the 1980s, both in regards to subject matter as well as to style. Djoko Pekik paints what moves him, he says, and what moves him is the plight of those millions of Indonesians who are living under difficult circumstances, in regions infertile from century-old deforestation, erosion and overpopulation, where work other than farming is scarce and the livelihood the land can offer more than meager. People and landscapes are Djoko Pekik’s major themes— depicted in bleak tones dominated by moss-green, black, ocher and cream, enlivened here and there by a deep red or blue. Djoko Pekik’s paintings are strong and simple: Simple figures in strong outlines set in simple, strong compositions. His colors are low tone and earthy; and like the repeated stripes in the cloth, his figures occur mostly in groups, in a choreographed repetition of rhythmic movement. The individual is not the focus of Djoko Pekik’s work like shown in the present lot.

Born in 1906, Guangdong (China). Wen Hsi was an artist, an academician and a gallerist. He studied art at the Shanghai College of Art in 1928. Wen Hsi settled down in Singapore at 1948 and became an art teacher at The Chinese High School and taught there from 1949 to 1968, concurrently teaching art at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts from 1951 to 1959. As a passionate art educator he had greatly influenced many of Singapore’s early Chinese artists. Wen Hsi was a great observant of nature. Almost everything can be the master’s inspiration to create exciting work namely, landscapes, human figures and animals. Like many of Singapore’s first-generation artists, Chen Wen Hsi was part of the “Nanyang school” — a style combining Chinese traditional ink painting with Southeast Asian flavor. Chen’s most sought-after paintings are his gibbon works, cranes, squirrels, ducks, chicken, and also sparrows. As an artist, he was never bound by tradition of medium and was versatile in both Chinese and Western art. The present lot was acquired directly from the artist (newspaper clips) and are examples of his profound ability to capture the “mood” and “spirit” of his environment, skillfully executed with great spontaneity through deft brush and finger strokes. It showcase the artist’s ability to harmonise Chinese art techniques on distinct subjects commonly encountered in Singapore. MASTERPIECE FINE ART - SINGAPORE

Willem Gerard Hofker Born in the city of The Hague in 1902, Willem Gerard Hofker applied for the local Academy of Fine Arts at the age of 15. Shortly after that, he moved to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam. He won second prize at the Prix de Rome in 1924. and became a well-known artist in the Netherlands during the 1930s. Hofker is mostly known for the body of work he made in Bali, where he and his wife Maria lived from 1938 until 1943. Having gone through the horror of war and Japanese camps, Willem and Maria Hofker returned to the Netherlands in 1946. The official portraits he made of queens Wilhelmina and Juliana helped to quickly regain his reputation as a portraittist. Although Hofker had a remarkable talent to capture the character of the sitter, it was merely -a way to earn a living. He was not very sociable, and often 'hid' behind his easle. The models he really loved were tireless and patient; Nature and Architecture, both in the Netherlands and abroad. The upcoming two lots, made in two consecutive years, epitomize these beloved themes. In 1936, Willem Hofker was invited by the Batavia headquarters Of the KPM (Koninklijke Paketvaart Maatschappij) to make. and personally deliver a portrait of the Dutch Queen Wilhelmina. Apart from that, he was asked to combine the portrait presentation in Batavia with a sojourn through the Dutch East Indies, to draw documentary impressions of the colony. These drawings were to be sent to Holland, enabling KPM to reproduce them for marketing purposes. Hofker initially did not have the anthropologic interest that his artist colleagues W.O.J. Nieuwenkamp, Watter Spies, Rudolf Bonnet and Miguel Covarrubias had displayed, but he was well aware that he Should draw and describe the culture, people and architecture of the Dutch East Indies in detail for the KPM; consequently, Willem and his wife Maria prepared well for their journey in 1938. picking up some Malay words and sentences, and reading books by Karl With, Gregor Krause, and Miguel Covarrubias.
Hofker needed to regain his powerful, decisive touch. Reading his letters and diaries, he was inspired to draw and paint numerous Balinese temples, palaces, and bales although most of them have not been traced (yet). After 4 months in Bali, Hofker had already produced 85 drawings and 15 oils. I feel so at home here. It is strange that all these beautiful things are still made here every day. Sometimes one is reminded of the Italian Renaissance or Roman reliefs of animals used as decorations in cathedrals, on capitols and in other places; this thousand year-oid culture has achieved the same high standard of visual imagery. (Willem Hofker, July 1, 1938, in: Hofker/Gianni Orsini, Willem Gerard Hofker, Uitgeverij de Kunst, 2013* p. 28) The split gate (or candi bentar) we see in the painting, indeed reminds us of the way Renaissance architects like Filippo Brunelleschi (1377-1446) coded the early Renaissance architecture; structural elements (the red brick in the split gate) are coded in a different colour from ornaments (the grey. decoratively sculpted elements on the top and sides of the split gate). A candi bentar marks the entrance into the outer sanctum of the Sukawati temple. A paraduksa or kori, positioned behind the candi bentar, marks the entrance to the inner sanctum, A paraduksa is not split, but closed with a stepped crown on top. It is often consisting of a main paraduksa or kori agung, with a wooden entrance door. only to be used by priests and gods, and two side gates. to be used by casual visitors. ` The painting. now in the splendid condition Hofker 'intended still exudes the grandeur of the royal family of Sukawati. It is remarkable how Hofker depicted the candi bentar, and did not create more depth by also painting the paraduksa behind it. Perhaps it is a conscious symbol of Hofker's mindful spirit -a modest man, who had just arrived in Bali, and was awestruck by an ancient culture- not having entered the main sanctum of Bali just yet.
Gianni Orsini, October 2017
The Candi Bentar is situated only 20 km from where Hofker was living at the time, and is in fact a double guarded entrance gate to Kori Agung, a second gate with a closed door in the middle that is made of red brick. It is slightly visible behind the tree branches on the right of the painting. With a few red brushstrokes, hofker marked the spot between green of the sketchy trees. The whole complex is located on the current Jalan Raya Sukawati and is part of Puri Ageng, the residence of the royal family of Sukawati.

(Amsterdam, 1902 – 1981) Candi Bentar temple, Sukawati Bali, 1938 Oil on canvas: 28 x 39 cm Signed and dated, lower left: WG. Hofker.Soekawati, 1938
The present lot probably the first oil painting Hofker produced in Bali. It clearly shows he was out of practice, which is easily explained: in the preceding months, during the voyage to the Indies and his stay in Java, he was almost entirely unable to paint. His letters and journals suggest that he made quite a number of drawings and paintings of Balinese temples and palaces, but unfortunately few seems to have survived.

SAMSUL ARIFIN
(Malang, East Java, 1979) Innocence, 2007 Acrylic on canvas: 150 x 100 Signed and dated, lower right: Samsul Arifin 2007 SGD 9,000 – 15,000 USD 6,660 – 11,100 Born in Malang, East Java, 1979, Samsul Arifin’s story is a story of a restless soul. He works on his visual creations involving many things and objects. Samsul had always been very much interested in art. His journey in the art world, however, had not been smooth. He started out in Malang, but the town could not facilitate his artistic aspirations and idealism. Eventually he moved to Yogyakarta to study art at the SMSR (the Secondary School for Visual Arts). Now he continues his study at the department of painting of ISI, Yogyakarta. Objects of still life have become recent theme used by young contemporary painters. They sometimes only represent common object that have been familiar with us but never put into account. Objects like eraser or pencil perhaps do not have deep meaning to a person. On the contrary, for Samsul, this object represents what he feels and thinks. They symbolize how modern people get advantage from using very simple and common thing like eraser and pencil. He keeps questioning about the freedom and the limitation of an artist, about art that is ideally free from any tendency. Samsul’s works generally tells of morality and ethics, which he continually questions. As one of the artists who begin their career in the year 2000, like his predecessors, Samsul practices the freedom of choosing his artistic media.

His subject center on life studies, scenes and landscapes done in Singapore and the region. He Siew Hock Meng creates works that are imaginative and thought-provoking, always challenging the viewers to dig deeper into his artistic motivations. His keen observations and personal reflections are especially poignant in the many thoughtful and contemplative landscapes of Singapore and other places he has visited. Despite his low profile and infrequent exposure, Siew’s work is highly regarded in the art circle and is much sought after in the region. His fame as a portrait painter gradually grew and spread in the region especially in Taiwan where he often spent months painting on commission. Not content to restrict himself to portraiture, Siew began to explore a wider range of subjects and themes such as human figures and life and culture of places like Bali, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Myanmar and Cambodia. Apart from his fascination for human forms, vibrant tropical colours and artistic and cultural diversity of the region, he often shows a deeper concern for the social, cultural and environmental realities that people in the region have to face. Awards: Awarded the National Day Medal for Fine Arts in 1971. Awarded the Award for Visual Arts Creation, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts Alumni Association Singapore in 1981 and 1984.

Adrien Jean Le Mayeur De Merpres Born in Brussels (Belgium), on 9 February 1880, in the nobility and linked with the Belgium royal family, he was the son of a painter. Adrien was very keen on becoming a painter himself, but his father insisted that he should complete his studies first. He graduated as a civil engineer (architect), but soon after devoted himself to painting. Le Mayeur’s works were executed with free-flowing and bold, strong strokes, in bright and gay colours. His works, be they sketches done in light colours or bright-coloured oil paints, showed that they were inspired by the brilliant and clear tropical sunlight. His subjects of paintings are Belgian Landscapes, Scenes of Asia and Africa, Balinese Genre, Figures and Nudes. He married with the famous Legong Dancer, Ni Nyoman Pollok, who was his best-known model and settled in Bali in 1932. His works shows effective use of light and shadow in bright colors. Popo Iskandar graduated from the University of Indonesian and Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). Popo Iskandar started painting in 1944, and is known not just as an artist, but an art observer and writer as well. Popo Iskandar has participated in many international exhibitions and in 1980, he was received an award from the Indonesian government for his contribution to arts. Another distinctly unique subject of Popo Iskandar’s paintings besides his rendition of the feline, are that of his roosters. Popo began the study of this subject in 1974 and observed that the rooster experienced several steps of expression, much the same as the five steps for the cat. Popo was inspired by the rooster as it was an object close to his surroundings and often overlooked by many. For Popo’s depiction of the rooster, he looked to another traditional Indonesian culture, Wayang Kulit, or shadow play. The artistic qualities of Wayang Kulit enabled Popo’s roosters to reflect a special artistic and esthetic manifestation as the rooster prepares to take off and dart out of the way. Popo’s use of minimal colours is not due to the lack of tools or materials, but rather his concept reflecting his intellectuality and mastery of the subject matter. MASTERPIECE FINE ART - SINGAPORE

Popo Iskandar Born in Garut, December 17, 1927. Popo Iskandar started painting in 1944. He graduated from the University of Indonesia and Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). Besides as a painter he is also an art observer and writer. In 1980 he received art award from Indonesian Government. He has participated in many exhibitions in Indonesia as well as overseas. His works were mostly on animal such as chicken, cat, and tiger. For Popo, the artistic process is no different from the cultural process, that is, it is a long process of study. Every painting is like a reflection. It is an integral part of every one of Popo’s efforts of the past, the present and the future. One of Popo’s works is not a record of what he has seen, but rather an interpretation of what he has observed through subject matter. Popo’s repetitive themes are not merely duplicates his ideas, but an accumulation of his endless exploration towards his rich experiences. The source of his idea of cats is not the form of the cat, but rather its involvement in various situations and conditions which stimulate his ideas and imaginations. Repetitive theme of cats, chickens and leopards probably has become Popo Iskandar’s main contemplation in reflecting the essence of cats, nudity or even mystery of nature.

In short, he created a unique “Man-fong style”. Lee Man Fong was one of a rare artist who received honor by critics and collectors across Asia. In short, he created a unique “Man-fong style”. Doves has become Lee Man Fong’s beloved and sought after works in spite of Goldfishes and other animals such as horses, cockatoos, tigers and dogs. Lee Man Fong’s painting of Doves is noteworthy. Since some forty years ago, his animal themes had made a far reaching accomplishment and recently eagerly sought after in Europe and America. A testimony to his mastery of technique and realization of theme, this painting depicts the world of the doves as peaceful and calm, but at the same time dynamic. The doves in pairs symbolize a good match, which may be further extended to mean “peaceful coexistence.”

Chen Wen Hsi paintings were strongly influenced by Chan (Zen) and the unorthodox Qing School of Yangzhou. He actively participated in several exhibitions outside Singapore which also incidentally promote Singapore. Chen Wen Hsi’s artistic excellence was recognized. Among the many awards he had received are the Public Service Star in 1964, a Gold Medal by the National Museum of History, Taiwan in 1980, the first recipient of the ASEAN Cultural and Communication Award for outstanding artists in 1987 and received an honorary doctorate from the National University of Singapore. He became famous since his oil study on formalism, cubism, and expressive abstraction and would subsequently become one of the most influential Singaporean ink painters of the 20th century. Acquired directly from the artist, the present lot is an example of his profound ability to capture the “mood” and “spirit” of his environment, skillfully executed with great spontaneity through deft brush and finger strokes. It depicts a keen observation of nature and animals that showcase the artist’s ability to harmonise Chinese art techniques on distinct subjects commonly encountered in Singapore.

Ahmad Sadali Born in Garut, West Java, 1924, Ahmad Sadali was known for his abstract art and titles that never give away any clues on the content of the painting, such as Gold on Purple Relief, or Gold on a wrinkled plane. Considered the father of Indonesian abstract art, and a teacher at the Bandung Institute of Technology, he exerted a wide influence on his students such as Umi Dachlan. Ahmad Sadali was known as an artist of abstract art, while AD. Pirous another abstract painter, who has brought Arabic calligraphy to the level of expressive art, has developed a tendency toward the abstract. The colors, the pieces, the etched gold tinsel, still remains one direction, a mystery. Something that was unreachable, but very large and powerful. In each of his works he always worshiped the Gods greatness. His paintings are sometimes full of question, because it relies on something that causes people to take them into account. He talked about something vague, something grand and beautiful. But because the technique and the intensity have reached a certain level, so we felt there was honesty in his search, he was so convincing. Sadali take us to the Lord's feet with the fields of rich, colorful and emotionless. He had managed to relate us with the world beyond our reach.

Agus Suwage Born in Purworejo, 1959. He studied at Bandung Institute of Technology (1979 – 1986), Artist in Residence in QUT, Brisbane, Australia (199a6), and Artist in Residence in “Sai-no-kuni” Saitama, the Museum of Modern Art, Japan (1999 – 2000). Agus Suwage is one of Indonesia’s most important contemporary artists. He lives and works currently in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Suwage is actively engaged in both local and international scenes since the late 1980s. He has participated in over 150 museum and gallery exhibitions around the world. His art practice - which includes drawing, painting, sculpture and installation - has been exhibited in major art events across Indonesia and abroad. He performed his solo exhibitions in H Block Gallery, QUT, Brisbane, Australia (1996), Cemeti Contemporary Art Gallery, Yogyakarta (1998), Gen Gallery & Public Center Koshigaya, Saitama, Japan (2000), and Nadi Gallery, Jakarta (2001, 2002). He joined several group exhibitions in Indonesia and overseas, Jakarta Art and Design Expo, Jakarta (1992), Art Gallery Conink, the Netherlands (1993), Cheju Pre-Biennale, South Korea (1995), Phillip Morris ASEAN Art Award, National Gallery, Bangkok, Thailand (1996), Tachikawa International Art Festival (1999), Museo de la Cuida de Mexico, Museum of Mexico (2000), Circle Point Gallery, Washington DC, USA (2002), etc. Whilst his oeuvre predominantly circles around the phenomenon of “death”, he is also engaged with an obsession of portraiture. Since the mid 90’s his own projection onto canvas has become the focal point of his artistic concern. At the most intimate level, his works might just be a medium for him to face and overcome his constant personal fear towards it. He thereby often uses popular symbols and iconography to invite an engagement with the beholder. Charcoal figures of skulls and skeletons dominate the works in his exhibitions, using images related to death as a chance to gaze at life face to face. The use of such imagery is Suwage’s way of confronting the act of living to its final point, when all action, belief and faith meet their inevitable end.

Affandi Affandi was passionate about his country and a large proportion of his works concerns his feelings about the land and its people. Though Affandi only painted what he observed and never approached his works from any kind of philosophical or analytical starting point, he was particularly fond of Balinese and Javanese culture. There are some works that used natural landscapes as their subject matter. Affandi especially liked to depict seascapes, or coastal landscapes with fishing boats. However, these works are far from being naturalistic, as they hardly relate to the matter of sky color, as affected by the sunlight. The natural landscapes seen in Affandi’s paintings do not show any “realistic effect”, either. It is generally known that Affandi’s landscapes – as well as other paintings – reveal lines (the result of paint applied directly on the canvas using the painter’s hands instead of brushes) that area arabesque and staccato in nature ant rhythm. The images in many of his landscapes require a keen eye for arts to be recognised.

Artists in Decenta were trying to reprocess the visual elements of Indonesia's traditional arts in search of "local colour and their cultural roots," Sunaryo recalled. Sunaryo is an artist who mixes figurative themes with abstract backgrounds using very refined color palette and graceful lines that show great technical mastery. His last mixed media treat interesting aspects of contemporary life which also render his viewer to the global problem of pollution and preservation of nature. Therefore, there are several inspirational elements in is work, and nature and the environment are key themes. He loves to use natural materials such as rattan, grass, bamboo, jute, canvas, nets and fibers in his multimedia. His works are quite unique. He produced paintings, graphics, ceramics, sculptures and installations. His abstract works are dominated with line and form with the use of white, brown, grey and black colours. Srihadi Soedarsono The merging of spiritual and physical control obtained in dance obviously appeals to the philosophical Srihadi. Some of his figurative paintings, especially the dancers, look deceptively similar, and that the figures have become stereotypes, but one should try to appreciate and study the details and minimal variations. Srihadi pays particular attention to the characteristic of the dancer and the artistic form of the dance. Every dance has its language or vocabulary of movement and type of costume, all of which imbued with philosophical meaning. Srihadi gives us many variants in this new approach to the depiction of the dance. When he first started to focus on the idea of movement, he did so by paying with the parallelism of gestures and by emphasizing the realistic aspect of the dancer’s bodies. Color was then relatively secondary. By the early 1990’s rhythm had taken a life of its own, as shown by the vibrant dynamism of the dancer. In painting the present lot, the dancers’ eyes remain transfixed even as their body movements are transformed into a feast of glittering color. Even so, and however much the costumes of the dancers drift rhythmically over the canvas surface, it is in fact the artist’s working of this background that embodies the idea of movement. In dance paintings from the mid – 1980s onwards, Srihadi has explored other aspects of the inner nature of movement besides those of immobility and diffused dynamism. Some lie midway between these two tendencies. He has explored composed movement, such as that practiced in the traditional dance of the Javanese palaces, in particular the Bedoyo Ketawang, which is considered to be the epitome of Javanese refinement. In the paintings on this theme, the fuzzy atmosphere shrouding the figures is gone; rather, the head and limbs are suspended, almost immobile, and drawn with an extreme delicacy, otherwise found only in the artist’s work depicting wayang puppets. Only the cloth moves, slowly drifting along the ground, merging dark violet into black. There is a visual rhythm set up by the inert head and limbs, the color of the headdress, and the casual placement of the hanging white garlands.

Agus Suwage Agus Suwage is first and foremost a graphic designer who has had 10-years experiences with commercial art before he ventured into his current profession as an artist. In mid1995, he borrowed the artistic mode of the German Anselm Keifer and the British Francis Bacon. Later, he tried to develop his own style starting to study with his own body and face in various poses and expression in realistic rendering as his means to convey socio-cultural issues in cynical, ironical and parody atmospheres. Suwage’s artistic explorations have as the basic photographic images that he develops with his sensitiveness and manual skills in drawing, adding support from digital manipulation, to produce images. His works illustrate how the constructed image of Western avant-garde art has been inspirational, through “museum without walls”, to the culture of the world’s modern art. Suwage’s mode of appropriation is by borrowing iconic imageries as his reference, to serve the metaphors for values actively working between love and hate, amazement and derision at once, in parodying, and so on. Suwage loves to play music and was craczy about the rock band such as Led Zeppelin, Sex pistols, Radiohead and many more. His knowledge of art and music is encyclopedic. Some of the titles and theme of his works are connected with music. Beside a stacks of exhibition catalogue that stands piled up on one corner of his table, the Rolling stone magazines was always spread out in Suwage’s studio. It came to his inspiration the cover of Rolling Stones magazine as his subject to paint. Anna-Lou “Annie” Leibovitz is an American portrait photographer. She photographed John Lennon on the day he was assassinated, and her work has been used on numerous album covers and magazines. On December 8th, 1980, Annie Leibovitz arrived at the New York apartment building of John Lennon and Yoko Ono to photograph the couple for a cover of Rolling Stone. She urged them both to take their clothes off, a flashback to their first Rolling Stone cover, in 1968, when they appeared naked to promote their Two Virgins album. Ono declined, but Lennon was game, and stripped down before getting on the floor near their bed and curling up in a fetal position next to the woman he called “Mother.” “I remember peeling the Polaroid and him looking at it and saying, ‘This is it. This is our relationship,’ “Leibovitz recalled. Hours later, Lennon was shot dead in front of the building. The image (which in 2005 was voted the best magazine cover of the previous 40 years by the American Society of Magazine Editors) appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone’s January 22nd, 1981, issue. It was the heartbreaking end of a 13-year relationship between Lennon and the magazine.

When his first visit to Bali, he was deeply impressed by the temple rituals and dances, and by a girl called Ni Pollok, a legong dancer, in particular. Balinese culture, nature and Ni Pollok had startled him of the strong magic of Bali and totally changed his vision about life. In 1933, Ni Pollok had turned 16 and was too old to dance the legong, so she agreed to be Le Mayeur’s model. It was a local tradition that a legong dancer is at her best only between 12 through 17 years. She became the main theme of his paintings and in 1935, when she was 18, they married in a traditional Balinese ceremony. His works, be they sketches done in light colours or bright-coloured oil paints, showed that they were inspired by the brilliant and clear tropical sunlight. His brightly-clad, energetic and graceful dancers, dancing to the beat of the drums and bells, or his women, kneeling beside the loom weaving sarong cloth, fully demonstrated the tranquil and fine life of the Balinese. He captured the daily life of people he personally observed around his surroundings and poured them into canvas in stunning expression.

Chen's great interest in observing his surroundings were found in depicting the nature and animal objects. He produced landscapes, figures, birds and animals, still life studies and abstract compositions. Chen was especially adept at drawing egrets and monkeys. Among all the animal paintings by him, Chen's gibbon paintings stand out, as they were noted by Chen's attention to detail and sensitive rendering of the beautiful creatures. His first inspiration from painting gibbons came from a reproduction of a gibbon painting that formed the right triptych of the famous painting, White Robed Guanyin, Crane and Gibbon by the 13th century Southern Song Dynasty Chinese artist Mu Xi. Awed by its lifelike quality, he was convinced with Mu Xi's great skill in close observation of the gibbons. So day and night, Chen studied Mu Xi's print and emulated the painting. Chen had never seen a gibbon when he was in China, and as a result he did not realize that gibbons, unlike monkeys, had no tails. It was only much later in the late-1940s, that a foreigner pointed out his error in his painting, and corrected him. Later on he continued to study the creature's postures and its characteristics, by rearing it in his home garden. Chen Wen Hsi Chinese color on paper illustrates a dimension of great complexity and freshness of Chen’s ink and brush.

Cheong Soo Pieng Cheong Soo Pieng (b.1917, Amoy, China - d. 1st July 1983, Singapore) was a Singaporean artist who was a pioneer of the Nanyang art style, and a driving force to the development of Modernism in visual art in the early 20th-century Singapore. Cheong took to studying art at in the Xiamen Academy of Fine Art in 1933. In 1936 Cheong graduated and attended Xinhua Academy of Fine Art in Shanghai for further studies, only to have his education cut short with the breakout of the Sino-Japanese War and the school destroyed by Japanese invaders in 1938. Cheong returned to his almamater to teach art, and pursued his painting passion in water colors due to scarcity of oil paint materials. In 1942 Cheong held his first solo exhibition of watercolor works. In 1945 Cheong left China for Hong Kong and relocated to Singapore in late 1946 where he would be a lecturer at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts for the next 20 years. In 1955 Cheong Soo Pieng, along with five other artists Chen Wen Hsi, Chen Chong Swee, Lim Hak Tai, Tay Wee Koh, and Suri bin Mohyani were invited to showcase their artworks in England, funded by fellow artist and arts patron Ho Kok Hoe. The exhibition was officially opened by the Duchess of Kent. In 1962, the Government of Singapore awarded Cheong Soo Pieng the Meritorious Service Medal. Cheong died on July 1, 1983 due to heart failure. Cheong was also known for his signature depiction of Southeast Asian indigenous tribal people with elongated limbs and torso, almond-shaped faces and eyes in his paintings. He found great inspiration in the landscapes and people of Singapore and the region. Subjects in his paintings included coastal scenes, people watching puppet shows, and people going about their everyday lives. His vast collection of sources of cultural and aesthetic inspiration was also often fueled by his travels abroad. In 1983, Cheong passed away at the age of 66 due to heart failure. His legacy continues to be remembered through posthumous exhibitions of his work by the National Museum Art Gallery in 1983, the Singapore Art Museum in 2010, and Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 2013.

Chen Wen-hsi is renowned for his skill in painting animal themes. Chicken, gibbons, herons, carps and squirrels are some of his favourite subjects. He had successfully combined Chinese and Western techniques in his semi abstract work. Wen Hsi’s constant eagerness to strike for something new led him to learn finger painting – a technique that dates from the Tang Dynasty. This drawing style has enabled him to produce unpredictable broken stroke on paper. He developed his skill in finger painting, ink-and-brush, oil, sketches, abstracts and semi-abstract techniques. Every subject he paints, whether lotuses, heron, gibbons, egrets, monkeys, squirrels, birds, or flowers and trees, is palpably vibrant. His ability to capture the “mood” and “spirit” of his environment, skillfully executed with great spontaneity through deft brush and finger strokes.

There are several stages within his artistic progress. In his early stage of advancement, his painting showed the influenced of synthetic cubism. This was his major artistic credo in the 1950’s. At the same time, he also made figurative paintings depicted in an emotional way that showed the influence of dominant art discourse. He abandoned the cubistic style in the early 1960’s and produced afterwards abstract painting by deforming landscape paintings. Colors in his canvases previously arranged within geometric pattern were freed. Here, Sadali brought Arabic calligraphy to the level of expressive art which developed a tendency toward the abstract style.

S. Sudjojono Sindudarsono Sudjojono was born in Kisaran North Sumatra, on December 14, 1913. He studied painting from Mas Pringadi and a Japanese painter, Chiyoyi Yazaki. In 1937 he founded the Persagi Indonesian Artists Association in Jakarta. In 1970 he was awarded recognition in art by the Indonesian government. His works have been exhibited in the Netherlands and in the Fukuoka Art Museum in Japan (1980). Local exhibitions have been held in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Denpasar and Bandung. He died in Jakarta (1986). Sudjojono is widely regarded as the driving force behind the establishment of modern art in Indonesia. His favorite subjects were ordinary Indonesians, depicted with piercing emotional realism, sometimes showing joy, pathos, dignity, and frustration. Quite often his figures inhabit dramatic urban or rural landscapes in an almost epic sense. S. Sudjojono used a combination of fantasy and memory to create his surrealistic landscapes. Sometimes, he incorporated elements derived from places that he had seen in books or actually visited. Since he often painted landscape paintings, Sudjojono never stood against art of the landscape. In the period after 1965, Sudjojono’s landscape painting show a social-nationalist tendency, where in them elements of life and progress can be found, apparent in the depictions of farmers and fisherman at works and so on. These visual elements are lodged Sudjojono’s dream of ‘utopia’ and concern for the improvement of the peasant life. Sudjojono’s landscape paintings also raise concern towards the lives of the people and the environment within the area. Therefore, what makes Sudjojono’s landscape painting differ from the mooi indie is that he depicted the beauty and the wealth of the Indonesian landscape with its current problems and challenges. Moreover, the landscape do not illustrate physical reality of the nature, instead they represent the landscape of the artist’s mind.

Lita Cabellut Lita Cabellut lived her gypsy-childhood in Barcelona. At the age of 13, after a crucial visit at the Prado Museum wherein she was inspired by the old Spanish and Dutch Court master artists, Lita decided to become an artist. To this end she started to take classical paint technique classes four times each week taught by an established master painter. Four years later Lita's work was on exhibit at the Town Hall museum of Masnou, Barcelona. At the age of 19 she decided to leave her native country of Spain for new challenges in the Netherlands. The artist has been exhibited throughout museums in the United States and Europe. Between 19821984 the artist studied at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. As early as the year 1988 Lita was well-established enough to earn a living solely from her artistic endeavors. Lita Cabellut is considered to be an artist with a unique pictorial language, using a contemporary variation on the frescotechnique and her own personalized 'Cabellut-palette'. Her work has been exhibited throughout museums the United States and Europe, and has been the subject of much critical acclamation.

Affandi The Indonesian community in Calcutta India was not much in number during the 1940s. At that time the community almost entirely consists of students or trainees who receive scholarships from the Indian government. Among the students there was Affandi, a famous revolutionary painter and creator of a new painting style in Indonesia. Former students in Calcutta have gained success in their respective careers. Affandi was awarded a scholarship to study at the cultural college in Santiniketan, where the late great author Sir Rabindranath Tagore lived. Examining the great talent that Affandi had, the college become worried about the influence of Affandi’s distinctive style, which was in contrast to the origin forms of traditional Hindu art. Therefore, in order to lessen the impact, they put great endeavored to send Affandi to different places which of course accidentally very useful to Affandi. Before he left from Calcuta, he gave two paintings to the present owner formerly the ambassador of India at that time. One was his self-portrait when Affandi was a teenager – painted in a classic style and the other one was rather large painting showing beach scenery where the fishermen were busy fixing the nets. Several sailboats were washed ashore. Blue sky with yellowish colors, while the sea birds hovering in the air. The atmosphere on the beach looked rather gloomy, as if the storm was starting to blow. This painting showed a typical Affandi’s character that present the strong lines of his wild finger strokes and vibrant colors. Two months after Affandi’s living from India, in Calcutta, there was paintings exhibition from Indian painters from Benggal. Apparently there were some paintings that show the influence of Affandi’s character in style and technique. This perhaps become great concerns in Santiniketan. They could not prevent Affandi’s influence, even though they always find a way to keep Affandi in distance from other students at the college. Thus this painting become an important evidence of Affandi’s great influence in India.

Chen Wen Hsi Chen Wen Hsi was of the pioneering generation of artists and was key in the development of a new artistic identity and language in Singapore. Born in a small village in Guangdong Province, Chen Wen His grew up surrounded by nature. Watching the flocks of sparrows and ducks that roamed around his childhood home, he recalled that he would “watch their shape and form, their habits, their every movement, their individual and communal life.” Long hours of observation gave him the ability to paint birds and animals with an extraordinary vibrancy. A prolific painter who worked in a range of styles, Chen won acclaim for combining Western art with Chinese brush strokes in his paintings. He was also an influential art teacher at The Chinese High School and the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) for many years. Chen was also highly skilled at finger-painting. He first learnt this skill from his teacher Pan Tianshou and his artist-friend Fu Luofei in Shanghai. Every works he made shows examples of his profound ability to capture the “mood” and “spirit” of his environment, skillfully executed with great spontaneity through deft brush and finger strokes. Chen Wen Hsi was known to organize art classes that were attended by art teachers and expatriates keen on Chinese art. During these classes, he will paint a range of animals after studying their interactions with their environment and nature. His paintings of Chicks, Herons and Bathing Ducks showcase the artist’s ability to harmonise Chinese art techniques on distinct subjects commonly encountered in Singapore. Chen would subsequently become one of the most influential Singaporean ink painters of the 20th century.

Ugo Untoro Born in Purbalingga, Central Java, 1970. He studied at the Indonesian Institute of Art (ISI), Yogyakarta. As an individual artist who is looking for meaning through imagery symbolism, Ugo’s scratchy paint shows his indeterminate sign and poetic upon his self consciousness. His rough scratches never recognized anything nor reach into form perfections. His horizontal lines sometimes go beyond his conscious and offer not only form but also meaningful message. The horse has its own history in the human history. Ugo explore the image of horse as the witness of the human bloddy and paintful history. The horse has a mistery towards the human betrayal of his/her own best friend. Ugo’s horse reflects a mind set that place the horse as his way to understand reality. Ugo’s horse plays as a personification and a methapore towards reality.

Cheong Soo Pieng Cheong was born the youngest of seven children in Amoy, China. His parents were neutral to his choice of education, when Cheong took to studying art at in the Xiamen Academy of Fine Art in 1933. In 1936 Cheong graduated and attended Xinhua Academy of Fine Art in Shanghai for further studies, only to have his education cut short with the breakout of the Sino-Japanese War and the school destroyed by Japanese invaders in 1938. Cheong returned to his alma mater to teach art, and pursued his painting passion in watercolours due to scarcity of oil paint materials. In 1942 Cheong held his first solo exhibition of watercolor works. In 1945 Cheong left China for Hong Kong and relocated to Singapore in late 1946 where he would be a lecturer at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts for the next 20 year. Besides painting both in the Eastern and Western techniques of Chinese ink and oils, Cheong Soo Pieng also sculpted and crafted metal installations. But it is his Nanyang-style paintings in particular that have received much attention. The techniques used are recognized as a creative blend of West and East, and the subject matter was inspired from his Southeast Asian surroundings hence the term Nanyang or South-Seas style. He was one of the first artists to paint in this theme. Inspiration for this stemmed from a Bali trip in 1952, which he embarked with three others: Liu Kang, Chen Wen Hsi and Chen Chong Swee.
