Leo Eland Leo Eland Eland was born in Salatiga on Java in 1884. Leo Eland is the widest-known and most characteristic exponent of the “Beauteous Indies” – style. He was largely self-taught and was advised by the painter C. L. Dake Jr. Between 1920 and 1929 he moved to the Netherlands and worked in The Hague. Leo Elands oeuvre consists mainly colored, smooth painted Indonesian landscapes, Majestic mountains, palm trees, a rural settlement and agricultural scene, also described some figures, coastal view and market scenes. He produced among others, a large number of dioramas and panoramas paintings for Colonial exhibitions. It is known that he went along plantations in Indonesia where he offered the owners to paint it. Leo Eland died in The Hague 1952. In the market scenes, Eland’s painting employs focal distance to reduce the villagers in the picture to small figures whose individually features are indistinct and whose exertions are all but invisible. Distant peasant figures often appeared as iconic types of Indonesian completed with huge trees on the surroundings.

Chen Wen Hsi 陈文希 Chen Wen Hsi (b. 9 September 1906, Guangdong, China–d. 17 December 1991, Singapore) was one of Singapore’s pioneer artists. A prolific painter who worked in a range of styles, Chen won acclaim for combining Western art with Chinese brush strokes in his paintings. He was also an influential art teacher at The Chinese High School and the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) for many years. Life Another vital current through Chen’s practice was his insistence on close observation of nature and a solid foundation in drawing from life or life drawing (xiesheng). Chen painted both Western and Chinese paintings. His Western-style works in the early 1950s were realistic depictions infused with post-impressionistic and expressionistic elements. Chen’s Western painting style subsequently evolved, moving from simplified forms and strong colours to cubism, and later abstraction. Besides using oil paints for his Western artworks, Chen also experimented with acrylic and viscous paints as well as sand on canvas. Surrounded with natural landscape Chen’s often painted what he saw. The field of calabash (bottle gourd) a tropical vine grown for its fruit, which can either be harvested young and used as a vegetable, or harvested mature, dried, and used as a bottle has captured Chen’s attention. This simple plant has allowed him to explore his great mastery in combining colors of yellow and black ink in simple forms. Every subject he paints, whether lotuses, gibbons, egrets, monkeys, squirrels, birds, or flowers and trees, is palpably vibrant.

Srihadi Soedarsono The dance is one of Srihadi’s favorite themes. In his paintings of dancers he continues to paint female dancers in the same upright pose that has used in the past. His dance work consist of series of dancers, even so, for Srihadi, each dance has it own particular mood, the gist of which he attempts to capture in his painting. At the same time, dance also offers a panorama of human life in general: it shows the dynamic union between the everyday world of material reality and the world beyond perception, the realm of the material. The merging of spiritual and physical control obtained in dance obviously appeals to the philosophical Srihadi. Some of his figurative paintings, especially the dancers, look deceptively similar, and that the figures have become stereotypes, but one should try to appreciate and study the details and minimal variations. Srihadi pays particular attention to the characteristic of the dancer and the artistic form of the dance. Every dance has its language or vocabulary of movement and type of costume, all of which imbued with philosophical meaning. Srihadi gives us many variants in this new approach to the depiction of the dance. When he first started to focus on the idea of movement, he did so by paying with the parallelism of gestures and by emphasizing the realistic aspect of the dancer’s bodies. Color was then relatively secondary. By the early 1990’s rhythm had taken a life of its own, as shown by the vibrant dynamism of the dancer. In painting the present lot, the dancers’ eyes remain transfixed even as their body movements are transformed into a feast of glittering color. Even so, and however much the costumes of the dancers drift rhythmically over the canvas surface, it is in fact the artist’s working of this background that embodies the idea of movement.

Liu Liguo Born in Heilongjiang, China in 1961, Liu Li Guo is famous for his painting style expressing and reflecting Twentieth Century Chinese ‘ego’, demonstrating a merge of consumer society and the traditional elements of modern China. There are many imaginative objects and vibrant colours used in his paintings, but Liu has mastered an avant-garde variation on Chinese traditional arts. Tay Bak Koi was born in Singapore 1939. He was an artist renowned for his portrayals of fishing villages, kampung scenes and urban landscapes. He specialized in oil and watercolour and his works have been exhibited extensively in Singapore and various other countries, including Malaysia, Hong Kong, Japan, Australia, Germany and the United States. His style tended toward a blend of realism and fantasy, and he was known for his recurring stylized imagery of the buffalo. In 1970, he was commissioned to produce 300 works for the Hilton Hotel in Singapore. He died in Singapore 2005. Tay Bak Koi drew many scenes of such, just like his popular buffalo, rocks and village, life by the river of the fisherman, ploughing and harvest, traditional café shop, tropical fruits, temples and many old landmarks faded away in history. Memories from his impoverished childhood were transformed into the leisurely sceneries through his roseate brushes. Tay Bak Koi’s most popular buffalo works were prevalent in 1990s.The shape of buffalos is laconic and was inspired by Picasso’s minimalist line. The buffalos are either resting, or running, accompanied by shepherds and birds. In most of his buffalo paintings, we can always find one buffalo in red, which stands out from the cold-coloured mountain, meadow or other buffalos. MASTERPIECE FINE ART - SINGAPORE

Affandi Affandi was passionate about his country and a large proportion of his works concern his feelings about the land and its people. Though Affandi only painted what he observed and never approached his works from any kind of philosophical or analytical starting point, he was particularly fond of Bali and Javanese culture. The cockfighting is one of the many recurring themes of the artist and yet the unique personality of the sitter never fails to captive the viewers. Very often, despite the artist’s apparent focus on the main subject which is the fight of the animals, Affandi is very fond of creating a sense of spontaneity by adding idiosyncratic details such as the feet of the onlooker, or the drinking spectator at the scene. In the present lot, the cock fight is over. The loser lies in a pool of blood, its scrawny neck still ruffled in death by the heat of the fight. The crowd of onlookers disperses. Brown feet walk away from the small corpse and out of the canvas. This painting was made in Tanjung Bungkak, Bali. In front of Affandi lies the carcass of the white fighting cock that failed in a fight the previous day. The blood which flowed from the wounds made by the rough cuts of sharp spurs has dried on its white feathers. All that for the satisfaction of the gamblers. In Affandi’s mind, there is a tragic aspect to that carcass. The previous day Affandi was among the crowd of gamblers in Denpasar. Of course with that kind of surrounding, where people push each around and almost seem mad yelling for their favorite, he could not draw on the spot like he usually does. He just wanted to experience the atmosphere of the cockfight. (Affandi,Vol II)

Putu Sutawijaya Putu Sutawijaya was born in Angseri, Tabanan, Indonesia in 1971, but today lives in a rural village on the outskirts of Yogyakarta. A graduate of the Institute of Indonesian Arts (ISI) in Yogyakarta, Putu remains active in the Institutes activities. Putu’s works have been nominated many awards such as one of the 10 best paintings of Philip Morris Art Award in 1999 and granted the Lempad Prize from Sanggar Dewata Indonesia in 2000. He has been performing Solo exhibitions in Bali, Yogyakarta, Jakarta Singapore, Hongkong, Malaysia and America. Various motions and human behavior are the theme he likes most in his paintings. His spontaneous and firm lines expressed his dynamic works using minimal color. Putu’s figures are painted with rhythmic motion and minimal color, and are characterized by his strong lines and brush strokes. Androgynous human figures are represented in motion – dancing, flying, floating – or otherwise completely still in a pose of serene contemplation. His art is, above all, about the individual human condition in a struggle to free itself from the constraints of an overly complex world. The bodies signify life, including people who are rebelling against the traditions. The hill on the background is actually a collection of unreadable writing, going from the soil below and pilling up to become a hill. The mountain is believed as the place where spiritual forces commune. In the Balinese context, it is seen as the search to find the whispers of the ancestors.

Ugo Untoro Born in 1970, graduate of Indonesian Institute of Arts, Yogyakarta. He was known as one of the first and probably the best of art doll-makers, the usually sulky Javanese rose from haphazard notice ability to fixed nationwide prominence with his rag sculptural works and oil on canvas paintings. His work is deep, original, and fun; sometimes bordering on being lyrical, sometimes unmistakably poetic -- that’s how Ugo’s drawings, sketches, oil on canvas paintings, dolls and stuff and ideas in general have commonly been viewed. Recently Ugo Untoro freer in creating whatever his adrenaline finds fit -- the consequence of yesteryears’ hard work. He is now one of the relatively successful younger artists since last century. As an individual artist who is looking for meaning through imagery symbolism, Ugo’s scratchy paint shows his indeterminate sign and poetic upon his self consciousness. S. Sudjojono Sudjojono’s favorite subjects were ordinary Indonesians, depicted with piercing emotional realism, sometimes showing joy, pathos, dignity, and frustration. Quite often his figures inhabit dramatic urban or rural landscapes in an almost epic sense. S. Sudjojono used a combination of fantasy and memory to create his surrealistic landscapes. Sometimes, he incorporated elements derived from places that he had seen in books or actually visited. Besides landscape, S. Sudjojono also enjoyed painting flowers. Sudjojono still live painting, such as floral paintings began after the 1960s, a decade filled with hardship. It was also the time when the nation was beset by economic and political turbulence. At that time, in addition to creating patriotic works (depicting guerrillas and revolutionary struggles), Sudjojono also created many landscapes, still-lifes, and nude paintings to help the family’s finances. Flower motifs are commonly found in works from this period of his creative life. Flowers – painted in varied styles and of diverse specimens – constantly appear until the very end. His flowers are his way of sustaining and expressing his creative joy, immortalizing an eternal flame despite hardships. Whenever he saw an attractive floral arrangement, he would paint it, usually capturing it in a fluid, impressionistic representation. Often he would present it as a more everlasting gift for his wife, Rose, in lieu of giving actual flowers. Sometimes he would immortalize the flowers that Rose received during concert by painting them as soon as they got home.

What sets his works apart from most printmaking techniques is his use of canvas or jute as a surface, which, as opposed to paper, allows for increased experimentation with scale. The use of canvas as oppose to paper gives Raduan a sturdier material to work with, enabling him the room for experimentation to form the artistic statement, which has shaped him today. Layers of blocks are imprinted, with each block contributing its unique characteristic, which gives depth and complexities to Raduan’s work. 80

Agung Mangu Putra Mangu Putra was born in Sangeh, Bali, on May 11, 1963. He graduated from the faculty of Art and Design at the Indonesian Arts Institute (ISI), Yogyakarta majoring Visual Communication Design (1990). His first exhibition was in Dewata Gallery (1987) at Taman Budaya Denpasar. Being a designer did not satisfy him as an artist then he decided to engage in full time painting in 1998. Since his first solo exhibition in Ubud (1990) his name was considered as valuable painter in Indonesia. He held his solo exhibition at National Gallery, “Teater Rakyat”, Jakarta, 2010; “Silent Word”, Gajah Gallery, Singapore (2008), Mandala, Bidadari, Ubud-Bali (2007), “Belief, Rupa Gallery”, Surabaya (2005),etc. He also joined in several group exhibitions in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Bali and other country. He received awards as the Best in Design Arts (during the 4th and 6th anniversary of ISI, as the finalist of Philip Morris Award in 1994 and Indofood Art Award 2002, Second Place, Jakarta. It is not surprising then that some of Mangu Putra’s works criticize human activities that damage the world. Mangu uses strong lines, shapes and colors in mature and harmonious ways. His vision of nature is “polluted” by civilization. His works criticize human activities that have deteriorated the natural world. His series on exploitation focuses on the slaughter of animals and criticize environmental issues. Natural objects are shown as if through sophisticated technological imagery, so that they appear artificial, attractive, provocative, and even fantastic.

Widayat Born in Kutoarjo, Central Java, 1923. He studied at the Indonesian Fine Art Academy (ASRI), Yogyakarta and Ceramics and Landscape, Nagoya, Japan (1960). He received BKPM award (1953), a cultural award from the Indonesian Government (1972), the Best Biennial Painting, Yogyakarta (1986) and the ASEAN Award, Brunei Darussalam (1993). His works have been shown throughout Indonesia and abroad. He performed his solo exhibitions in Yogyakarta (1983), Jakarta (1985, 1990, 1991, 1992, 2000 and participated in joint exhibition in Japan, Netherlands and United States for KIAS (1990 – 1991). The themes of Widayat’s works during half a century have not shifted much. They are centered on landscapes, flora and fauna, actual daily life, myths legends, and religious – spiritual issues. The same remark goes for his treatment of main object and decorative backgrounds with textures that has already become part of his characteristic features. One of the themes extensively treated by Widayat is flora and fauna. After his trip to Japan, the artist created many cherry blossom trees and animal objects like birds, horses and fishes. Fish seem to be the obsession for Widayat, who explained that his fascination for the creatures started in Japan. He went to deep-sea fishing with friends. The fish had all sort of strange, monstrous forms that appealed to Widayat’s fantasy. The fish is a symbol of good health, just like a proverb says “I feel as healthy as a fish in water.” Another reason for Widayat’s attraction to underwater world might be because he was born under the astrological sign of Pisces, the Fish. People with this sign must have the freedom to swim in all directions, living in the depths of the intuitive world of water.

The late artist was well-known for his realistic paintings. Besides painting of portraits of beautiful women, he is also noted for his natural beauty and sensuous landscape, as well as paintings of scenes from legends that are also tempered with the same lyrical and overly sensual treatment. Basoeki likes to paint anything beautiful. Flamboyant flowers, women, landscapes, flora and fauna, to the leading figures painted very nicely. He often went to places for field trip, observing object for his painting and put it into sketch. His ability to depict nature makes all the objects seemed to be dramatic, alive and more beautiful in colors than the actual objects.

S. government to study arts education in 1957, after participating in International exhibitions in Brazil and Italy. He was made an Honorary Professor of Painting by Ohio State University, and in 1974 was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Singapore. He also received the Peace Award from the Dag Hammarskjoeld Foundation in 1977, and the title of Grand Maestro in Florence, Italy. Affandi was passionate about his country and a large proportion of his works concern his feelings about the land and its people. Though Affandi only painted what he observed and never approached his works from any kind of philosophical or analytical starting point, he was particularly fond of Bali and Javanese culture. There are some works that use natural landscapes as their subject matter. Affandi especially liked to depict seascapes, or coastal landscapes with fishing boats. However, these works are far from being naturalistic, as they are hardly related to the matter of sky color, as affected by the sunlight.

Lee Man Fong Lee Man Fong was one of a rare artist who received honor by critics and collectors across Asia. As an Oriental artist, Lee man Fong has renewed and transformed Western oil painting by imbuing it with the essence of Chinese ink painting, achieving a mutual identity between subject and object, at the same time vastly opening the restrictions on traditional Chinese painting. In short, he created a unique “Man-fong style”. Lee Man Fong is famous painter who captures gold fishes in magnificent way. Some gold fishes are swimming freely in the space of an aquarium, still with his essential element by using the light, reflecting the sun’s radiance, Lee success to bring all the goldfishes as a depiction of calmness. As to the Chinese philosophy, Gold fish is believed that the fish can bring rich and prosperity to whose ever owned it. In Lee Man Fong paintings, light is of prime importance and the subjects are consistently bathed in a luminous glow as presented in this lot. The background, unlike the flat, void spaces of Chinese paintings, is likewise illuminated by an almost mysterious glow of white sunlight. Therefore the subjects, reflecting the sun’s radiance, seem also to be lit from the back, creating the effect of “glowing silhouettes”.

Chen Wen Hsi is Singapore’s foremost painter that combines Chinese and Western techniques in his semi abstract work. Chen Wen-hsi is renowned for his skill in painting animal themes. Chicken, gibbons, herons, carps and squirrels are some of his favourite subjects. Wen Hsi’s constant eagerness to strike for something new led him to learn finger painting – a technique that dates from the Tang Dynasty. This drawing style has enabled him to produce unpredictable broken stroke on paper. He developed his skill in finger painting, ink-and-brush, oil, sketches, abstracts and semi-abstract techniques. Every subject he paints, whether lotuses, gibbons, egrets, monkeys, squirrels, birds, or flowers and trees, is palpably vibrant.

Hendra Gunawan Hendra’s paintings have formed a modern Indonesian folk art where they can be seen as the illustrations of a new mythology. The stylized figures of exaggerated profiles, with long necks, protruding noses, and large eyes, echoes the stylization of human form found in wayang. His subjects of women with long tresses, young mothers, wives, fish sellers, fruit vendors express his goddesses and heroines, while the heroes features were illustrates as the fathers, husbands, fishermen and farmers. They inhabit a breathtakingly beautiful paradise of fertile land, rich seas, majestic mountains, rivers, and spectacular beaches. Hendra later paintings are melancholic and emotional as a result of the hardship that he experienced during his thirteen years in Bandung Kebon Waru prison. During his imprisoned time he painted some of his most dreamlike, vibrant and emotional works. He illustrates the sadness and the mystery in a brighter, more saturated, expressionistic and abstract. The present lot depicts Hendra’s concern of common people. The sellers were placed side by side, one in seated position on the ground and the other is standing holding a bunch of flowers. The woman was wrapped in brightly colored cloth. The picture depicts Hendra’s deep feeling and irony inspiring perspective of life’s most fundamental issue: freedom and hunger.

S. Sudjojono Sudjojono is widely regarded as the driving force behind the establishment of modern art in Indonesia. His favorite subjects were ordinary Indonesians, depicted with piercing emotional realism, sometimes showing joy, pathos, dignity, and frustration. Quite often his figures inhabit dramatic urban or rural landscapes in an almost epic sense. S. Sudjojono used a combination of fantasy and memory to create his surrealistic landscapes. Sometimes, he incorporated elements derived from places that he had seen in books or actually visited. Since he often painted landscape paintings, Sudjojono never stood against art of the landscape. In the period after 1965, Sudjojono’s landscape painting show a socialnationalist tendency, where in them elements of life and progress can be found, apparent in the depictions of farmers and fisherman at works and so on. These visual elements are lodged Sudjojono’s dream of ‘utopia’ and concern for the improvement of the peasant life. The painting of Tol Jagorawi (1981) is one of the evidence of such dreams and concerns. Sudjojono’s landscape paintings also raise concern towards the lives of the people and the environment within the area. Therefore, what makes Sudjojono’s landscape painting differ from the mooi indie is that he depicted the beauty and the wealth of the Indonesian landscape with its current problems and challenges. Moreover, the landscape do not illustrate physical reality of the nature, instead they represent the landscape of the artist’s mind. (Seabad Sudjojono)

Srihadi Soedarsono During his career, Srihadi followed the Bandung style of cubism that was characterized by a kaleidoscopic use of color. Next he tries abstraction, and then informal art to expose the social problems which also included many paintings of Borobudur, the immense 9th century Buddhist monument in Central Java. Srihadi’s experimentation on the theme of Borobudur takes a long process of attempting to understand the essence of life and nature. His Borobudur is presented in the abstraction of his personal lyrical expressionistic style. The Borobudur is illustrated as a form of monumental black color. The abstraction achievement is seen through the strong strokes on the wall of the temple combined with the gentle sweep on the sky and earth that present the distinctive spiritual silence, like in other work of Srihadi. Srihadi considers the artistic architectural form of Borobudur set in the surrounding natural environment. As a concrete statement that religious behavior and attitudes are the highest human values, Borobudur is living proof of the hopes and ideals of mankind. His experimentation on the theme of Borobudur takes a long process of attempting to understand the essence of life and nature. The great monument Borobudur is an icon of cultural. Symbolizing the various stages of life, Borobudur is a cultural text as well as an embodiment of human religiosity. When meditating at Borobudur, Srihadi employs the techniques of silent and clean. Such a state of mind is required when a person prays, and this state of mind is similar to the behavioral concept of the Arupadatu at the pinnacle of Borobudur.

Then he continued to the Faculty of fine Art and Design of Indonesia Art Institute, still in Yogyakarta (1999). Together with his friends such as Yunizar, M. Irfan, rudi Mantofani, Yusra Martunus and Handiwirman, he established Kelompok Seni Rupa Jendela, literally translated as The Window Visual Art Group. With abundance of themes and style, his paintings appear very compelling and varied which reflects the artist's astounding creativity. He is also blessed with amplitude of artistic touch. The color he uses can be brilliant or dark and also melancholy. But one can always notice the native, childlike, and lively characters in all his canvases, as the artist himself is, by nature cheerful. In 1998, he won the best painting award from the Indonesian Art Institute, Yogyakarta. Jumaldi tends to work in series. There is no sign of connection that we can use, to gather meaning from the presence of these things and forms. They all seemed to run free, detached, merely as elements. Jumaldi Alfi experiment in using many colors appears rather surprising and interesting. Alfi wishes to be freed from feelings of melancholy and the weight of personal problems about his identity, conflicts and self-sacrifices that clearly dominate and influence his creative ideas.

He was the founder of the Himpunan Pelukis Masyarakat (Community’s Artists Association (1946) and Himpunan Pelukis Rakyat (People’s Artists Association) in 1947, Affandi was committed to creating a new artistic idiom for Indonesia. In the early of 1950s he traveled to India for a grant from Indian Government, he held several one-man shows in several Indian Cities, United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Italy. He received an Indonesian Art Award from the Ministry of Education and Culture (1969), the Dag Hammerskjoeld Prize from Italy (1977) and an Indonesian Government the First Class Merit (1978). His works were exhibited in major exhibitions in Asia, Europe, and the Americas and were also be acquired by major art collectors and institutions all over the world since the 1950s. Affandi prefers capturing his subjects exactly as they are by painting them as they appear in their natural setting. In this, he starts of his use of squeezing paint directly on the canvas, a style that he has used since the late fifties. He not only departs from the use of the brush, but makes use of his palms and fingers to apply the paint on the canvas. Affandi’s work exhibits a distinct rhythm full of emotional intensity. The impact of this emotion is communicated visually depending on the emotional drive of the painter himself. The expressionist painter characteristically has an urgency to simultaneously grab the movement of the moment he wants to describe, along with capturing the textures of the object, a drive that often leads him to work much more passionately compared to the naturalists, the realists, or even the impressionists. In painting the present lot, Affandi directly expressed his pure emotion in the form of strong wild lines dominated with black hues and decorated with the sun. Affandi’s strokes expressed his wild, vicious, and discontentment towards the fixed form.

Many of his paintings depict the nature of his surrounding environment. He had several solo exhibitions in Bandung Institute of Technology, The Honolulu East West Center, and the Center of Strategic and International Studies in Jakarta. He received the “Dharma Kusuma” art awards from the local government of Bali. Arie Smit is an artist who loves natural beauty and Balinese culture in the form of imaginative painting, painting that express the pure soul of an adventurer, a natural devotee of tropical sunlight. Arie Smit’s painting show breath-taking landscapes, relaxing youths, colorful tropical gardens, glittering seascapes, and quiet temples that evoke a sense of wander. Façades of temple are often shown with human figures in front of them. His special characteristics were seen by the use of his tropical rich color on the object.

Painter of the abstract, she fuses the natural energies of her native Iceland with an explosive, however organic, abstract expressionism and subtle Japanese calligraphy signs, often filtered through conceptual installations. Through a wide range of works, Katrin Fridriks distils her questioning about our world, human life and the future. She explores among others themes such as the genetic code and classification through the “Gene&Ethics” series, the flux of information and the notion of “Awareness” in our technology-based time, or the natural resources expressing the consequences of human activities on Earth she calls “Mother nature”. Based on an endless exercise on the matter & technique, some of her series are constantly reworked, making her paintings evolve. Through this artistic continuum, Katrin Fridriks’ recent works include perspective studies of her black&white series: “Gene&Ethics” and “Stendhal Syndrome” as well as of her “Crayons” & “Lollipop” series. On one hand, the architectural dimensions of her abstract paintings highlights Fridriks’ interest for large-scale works and compositions of painting, playing with the size, thickness and format of the canvases. On the other hand, her pictorial process brings her to the enlargement of her drippings, from swings to covering the whole canvas. Creating a zoom effect referring to the aesthetics of macrophotography, this is an innovative technical challenge to follow for the conceptual painter. Internationally exhibited (London, Berlin, New York, Los Angeles…), she has received high-profile grants from the Ministry of Culture, Higher Education & Research in Luxembourg in 2009, the French government for the Olympic Stadium of Nîmes in 2007, and among others the GossMichael Foundation for the MTV Re-define project in 2011, Ralph Lauren Foundation in 2010, the Biennial of Liverpool and the Centre of Icelandic Art in 2008.

Affandi Squeezing paint directly onto the canvas seems best suit Affandi, allowing him to have full artistic expression along with an ability to finish his work quickly. As with other expressionist painters, his work exhibits a distinct rhythm full of emotional intensity. Affandi was one of the Indonesian maestros. He was well-known for his typical characteristic of impressionist wild and strong lines. Affandi’s interest in humanity made him learned a lot about the anatomy of human body in the beginning of his career. He had developed his mature style of self-portraits by the early 1950s. “Self Portrait” was created using close subject of his own face. Looking at him-self was believed to be one way to communicate to the universal as well as express personal emotion.

Widayat Besides the painting of masses birds and fish, individual animals also make their appearance. There are rooster, phoenix, dinosaur, and horses. The nature in Widayat’s work is never abstract. His flora and fauna painting still show visible forms displaying endless variations of mountains, trees, flowers, birds, fish and many other animals. All these diverse elements are woven into one rhythmic tapestry generating a world of its own. Many of Widayat’s paintings are scenes of daily life. He is a keen observer of the busy street life in Yogyakarta, a city where many cultural events take place. During these festivals people gather in alun-alun, the big public field in front of the Kraton (the Sultan’s palace). The annual events are documented in several works by Widayat. There are mostly scenes of a family some sitting on a vehicles or horses, people carry enormous, people dancing using masks, or just a crowd watching on the street. In contrast to flora and fauna paintings, the festival scenes of Widayat are colorful and humorous. They show another side of usually quite an introverted personality of a family man enjoying the busy street of the festival. In “The black horse’ children are walking by the horse, shouting and playing. Some spectators crowded among them. This showed the local surroundings, the social and cultural life of the world around Widayat.

Richard Winkler Richard Winkler was born in Norrkoping, Sweden, 1969. He studied arts at the Nyckelviken School of art which later continued his study at the Beckmans School of Design. He was interested in human body His works have been exhibited in Asia as well as European countries. As one of the foreign artists who visualized Bali, Richard Winkler continues the romantic tradition of painting on the island. Winkler was very interested in the human body and anatomy which he put into canvases in exaggerated figures. In the period of 1994-1995, he traveled to several cities in Europe to deepen his visual arts. In 1997, he moved to Bali and creates paintings inspired by the place. Besides painting human figures, he also interested in painting plants of the tropical forest.
